  1. Even in what was a relatively light week nationally, and a relatively tame one in terms of Fab 50 national ranking shake-ups, there was still tumult. It came on Sunday afternoon, and it came at the very top of the national rankings. No. 2 Blair Academy (N.J.) 35, No. 1 Wyoming Seminary (Pa.) 20 The match was supposed to be held at Blair Academy on Saturday evening, but was instead delayed due to the weather, and held on Sunday afternoon. The pre-match analysis suggested a very close dual meet that would hinge on a few key matches. What happened was that essentially all of the swing matches went in favor of Blair Academy, which led to the decisive score line. As expected, the host Buccaneers had an advantage in the lower weights, they won five of the matches between 106 and 145. It included a win from Zach Sherman, which was something they had hoped for, though Wyoming Seminary thought they could defeat Sherman. In this dual meet, Blair Academy sent out Mike Madara at 120, and he lost to Jack Davis by 7-4 decision; however Jake Riegel, Wyoming Seminary's Powerade champion at 126, fell by 5-1 decision against Sherman. Additional front half weight class victories for Blair Academy came via major decision from No. 15 Michael Colaiocco (106), technical fall for No. 16 Chris Cannon (113), 5-1 decision for No. 9 Requir van der Merwe (132), and 3-0 decision for Andrew Merola (145); van der Merwe beat two-time National Prep runner-up Trent Olson in his bout. Wins for the Blue Knights in the front half were earned by Davis and a major decision from Patrick Munn (138). Trailing 18-7 at the halfway point, the nation's top ranked team tried to manufacture an extra win at 152 pounds by flipping their normal 152 and 160. Ironman placer Will Verallis, who has placed three times at National Preps, took to the mat at 152 pounds; however, he was upended 3-1 in overtime by Max Pickett, who did not wrestle for Blair until the Geary Invitational. Mason Manville, ranked No. 1 nationally at 152 pounds, then earned a 9-2 decision victory over No. 15 Ryan Karoly at 160. The dual meet score was 21-10 headed into the last five bouts. Blair Academy extended the lead to 26-10 after a 15-0 technical fall for No. 4 Brandon Dallavia at 170 pounds. Wyoming Seminary tried their other lineup maneuver in the next two bouts to make a comeback possible. The first prong of it worked with No. 12 (at 195) Christian Dietrich getting a 10-2 major decision at 182. However, the second prong fell on its face when No. 1 (at 182) Nick Reenan fell by 3-1 decision to No. 3 Chase Singletary at 195. Blair Academy's 29-14 lead at that point mathematicaly clinched the dual meet. The teams traded pins in the last two weight classes, Wyoming Seminary got theirs at 220 from No. 14 Will Hilliard, who pinned Nick Mosco in 3:11; for Blair it was Neil Putnam with a pin at 285 in 1:20. Check out the updated Fab 50 rankings on Wednesday morning, along with an article providing perspective on how the nation's top three teams will be ordered. Mt. Carmel outlasts two other Fab 50 teams to win Chicago Catholic League title The Chicago Catholic League re-emerged as a dominant force in Illinois wrestling with its conference tournament being held at the De La Salle Institute on Saturday. This is due to the injection of No. 19 Marmion Academy and No. 40 Montini Catholic into the conference this year, along with the resurgence of No. 14 Mt. Carmel as a national power. Each of the three Fab 50 teams saw three of their individuals win CCL titles. Even without state placer Kaleb Guzior (120) in the lineup, the Caravan placed twelve wrestlers to win the tournament with 241.5 points; Marmion Academy was second with 217 points, placing eleven despite the absence of nationally ranked Sean McKenna (106); while Montini Catholic was third, placing ten and scoring 205 points. Marmion Academy had a tournament high eight finalists, while Mt. Carmel and Montini each had seven. The seven finalists for the Caravan came from 152 through 285, while the Broncos' finalists were from 106 to 145. The lone finals match involving two nationally ranked wrestlers came at 152 pounds, where No. 13 Jake Tucker (Mt. Carmel) beat No. 18 (at 160) Trace Carello (Marmion Academy) 3-1 in overtime. Other champions for the Caravan were David Riojas (170) and Matt Reyes (285); runners-up were Cameron Lopez (160), Johnny Drozd (182), Dru Worker (195), and Leo Ortiz (220). The other loss for a nationally ranked wrestler in the finals came at 138 pounds, where A.J. Jaffe (Marmion Academy) upended No. 19 Will Lewan (Montini Catholic) 3-1. Other Cadets champions were Nate Jimenez (160) and No. 7 (at 182) Nathan Traxler (195); Traxler earned a 15-0 technical fall over 2014 state placer Worker in his finals bout. Runners-up for Marmion Academy were Trevor Chumbley (113); Anthony Cheloni (132), who lost 2-1 to the nation's seventh ranked wrestler in the final; Carello; Matt Ferraro (170); and Wes Kramer (285). Champions for the Broncos were No. 14 Joey Melendez (106), No. 2 Real Woods (113), and No. 7 Dylan Duncan (132); runners-up included Nicky Amato (120), Jimmy Pawelski (126), Lewan (138), and Caleb Fortuna (145). Rounding out the weight class champions were Josh Ramos (120) and Dominic Ferraro (220) for Providence Catholic, Jacob Silzer (126) and No. 3 Austin O'Connor (145) for St. Rita, and No. 13 Kyle Betourne (182) for Bishop McNamara. Pomona with statement at Top of the Rockies Tournament The state of Colorado is an emerging force within scholastic wrestling. The two Fab 50 teams in that state were both at the Top of the Rockies Tournament hosted by Centaurus, which is just outside of Boulder, this weekend. No. 44 Pomona upended No. 31 Pueblo County 209-181. The champions placed ten wrestlers, while the runners-up placed seven. The lone champion for Pomona was Tomas Gutierrez (120). They had four runners-up: Colton Yapoujian (106), Theorius Robison (126), Jason Romero (145), and Brandon Micale (220). Other placers included Dayton Marvel (132) and Cameron Gonzlez (170) in third, Nolan Krone (160) in fourth, with Justin Pacheco (113) and Angelo Arellano (195) placing sixth. Runners-up Pueblo County had a pair of champions in Grant (126) and Hunter (152) Willits. There were a trio of runners-up in Josiah Nava (113), Justin Davis (132), and No. 11 Chris Sandoval (138). Rounding out the placers were Nathan Bonham (106) in third and Dante Garcia (182) in sixth. The "in form" Sandoval was upset by No. 17 Ryan Deakin (Legacy) by an 8-6 score in the championship bout. Other nationally ranked weight class champions included No. 19 Parker Simington (Thompson Valley) at 160 pounds, No. 7 Cohlton Schultz (Ponderosa) at 220, and No. 17 Toby McBride (Fort Morgan) at 285. The championship run of Andrew Lucero (Pueblo East) at 106 should also be noted, as he pinned notable freshman Mosha Schwartz (Ponderosa) in the semifinal before beating notable freshman Yapoujian 12-2 in the final. Quick hits No. 7 St. Edward (Ohio) upended a pair of nationally ranked teams on Saturday afternoon as the host team in a quad meet, one in which each squad won a state championship last season. The Eagles beat No. 48 Lowell (Mich.) 54-10, winning 12 of 14 weight classes; while winning nine bouts in a 51-25 victory over No. 24 Delta (Ohio). The other dual meet featuring nationally ranked teams saw Delta beat Lowell 40-31, as the Panthers won eight bouts. All three teams earned victories over Richmond (Mich.) No. 32 West Des Moines Valley (Iowa) hung on to win the Ed Winger Invitational at Urbandale, Iowa by a single point over No. 30 Southeast Polk (Iowa). West Des Moines Valley placed eleven wrestlers, ten in the top five, on the way to 203 points; while the runner-up Rams placed twelve, but only nine within the top five. Narrowing the gap was the medal round, when the eventual champions were 4-7 (1-5 in championship bouts), with the runners-up going 7-5 including wins in all four championship bouts.
  2. STILLWATER -- No. 5 Oklahoma State wrestling defeated No. 16 Iowa State on Sunday afternoon, 38-3, making it the Pokes' largest win margin over the Cyclones since a 34-0 shutout in 1949. The Cowboys improve to 9-2 on the season and have six wins over top-25 opponents. "I think the team that Iowa State put out on the mat is young and developing and you hope to see a score like that against a team like this," John Smith said. "It's easy to say and hard to do, but we did it tonight. As you saw today, we struggled a little bit offensively. Not because of effort, but they stayed in good position and were grabbing wrists to slow it down. That's not our style and I don't know if it's their style. Maybe they were outmatched and that's the way to keep the score down, but we need to continue to focus on our offense." Once again, No. 5 Eddie Klimara opened the dual with a win, defeating Kyle Larson with a 15-0 technical fall. With his first takedown coming midway through the first period, Klimara exposed the Cyclone wrestler for two sets of nearfall points to lead 10-0. Two more takedowns and an escape ended the match in 3:13. "I just wanted to come out here and prove to myself that all the work that I have been doing would pay off," Klimara said. "I wanted to go out there and put up points. Tonight, all the moves I did, I hit. I was on attack on my offense, and it felt nice to get out there and score." Gary Wayne Harding gave the crowd an exciting match at 133 pounds against No. 9 Earl Hall. Harding went down 4-2 after two Cyclone takedowns in the first period. Another Hall takedown in the second period gave him a 6-3 advantage over Harding, but a late takedown from the Cowboy tied up the match at 6-6 going into the final period. Harding rode Hall until the three seconds remained on the clock, giving Hall a 7-6 win and Harding just 59 seconds of riding time. The 141-pound bout started slow, but No. 1 Dean Heil put the first points on the board in the second period with a reversal over Nathan Boston. He separated the score with a takedown late in the third period and picked up a riding time point for a 5-0 win. At 149 pounds, Anthony Collica's hand was raised just eight seconds into the match as No. 20 Gabe Moreno suffered a shoulder injury, giving the Pokes six team points. Joe Smith rounded out his home debut with another win, defeating Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer. Smith earned three takedowns in the match for a 10-2 major decision. Smith now holds a 26-2 record for the year. Alex Dieringer followed up Smith's performance with another major decision win at 165 pounds. Top-ranked Dieringer faced No. 10 Tanner Weatherman, who he scored four takedowns on as well as a four-point nearfall. The win extends Dieringer's win streak to 68, putting him just six wins away from matching OSU legend Mike Sheet's win streak. "Every time I have had a loss, or a bad match like Friday night, I've always gotten better from it," Dieringer said. "It really eats me inside when I don't get bonus points for the team or for myself, so I think not being complacent is the only way to get better." Kyle Crutchmer redeemed a 3-1 loss from earlier this weekend when he defeated Lelund Weatherspoon with a 5-2 decision. The No. 3 Cowboy got two first-period takedowns and a quick escape in the third to give him his 17th win of the season. Nolan Boyd notched his second win of the weekend after a big upset over Mizzou's fourth-ranked Willie Miklus. Boyd face Dane Prestano at 184 pounds, where the first period ended scoreless. Boyd scored a reversal to start the second period and open scoring. He later scored a takedown in the period and a full-period ride in the third for a 5-2 win. Preston Weigel earned his first dual win on Sunday afternoon in style, taking down Marcus Harrington with a 10-0 major decision. Weigel scored a takedown in the first period and picked up two sets of back points. In the second period, he earned an escape and notched another takedown to seal the win. At heavyweight, Austin Marsden tallied his second bonus-point win of the weekend with a fall over Quean Smith in 3:39. The Cowboy senior led the Cyclone 12-0 before the stick. He improves to 18-1 on the season. The Pokes will take a week off from competition but will return to the mat on Feb. 5 to take on Oklahoma inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. It was his 20th win via bonus points over the last 31 matches. It was Stieber's 86th career victory and first since last year's Big Ten Championships. BUCKEYES WIN THE NEXT FOUR Ohio State went four-for-four at 157, 165, 174 and 184 pounds, highlighted by a pin from Bo Jordan in 5:58 that gave the Buckeyes a 29-6 advantage. Jake Ryan moved to 13-1 on the season with a 10-6 decision over Mark Bozzo that was essentially locked up when Ryan got three first period takedowns and a reversal to start the second. Jordan's pin was his fourth of the year and came with 1:02 remaining the third period. He remained unbeaten (10-0) and has won seven of his 10 matches this year via bonus points. Not to be outdone, Myles Martin followed at 174 with a 19-4 technical that was clinched late in the third period on a two-point near fall. "We left a lot of points out here, but they're probably thinking the same thing. Today's dual was probably a little more exciting than I would have liked." Third-ranked Cory Clark (133) and 12th-ranked Alex Meyer (174) won by identical 2-0 scores. Both wrestlers escaped in the second period and rode the length of the third period to earn a point for riding time. 6. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan team picked up its sixth straight win in dominant fashion, cruising to a 33-6 win against No. 21 Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 24) in front of 1,402 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines won eight individual bouts, earning bonus points in four. Michigan won each of the final five bouts after the intermission break, highlighted by 14th-ranked sophomore/freshman Davonte Mahomes' dramatic 9-8 win against sixth-ranked Nate Jackson in the marquee match at 174 pounds. The bout went back in forth with Mahomes taking the initial lead on a first-period double leg and Jackson taking over with two second-period takedowns. With the score knotted up at 7-7 in the third period, Mahomes sacrificed the lead on a stall warning -- his second -- on the edge of the mat but rallied late, finishing on a single leg with less than 20 seconds remaining. He rode out the remainder of the contest to hang on for the win. The Wolverines followed with bonus wins from their upperweight captains, including back-to-back falls from junior Domenic Abounader and graduate student Max Huntley at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Abounader, ranked ninth in the latest InterMat poll, stuck Wyatt Wilson in just 1:16 -- but not before posting a single-leg takedown, eight back points and ultimately using a power half to end the match. It was his fourth pin of the season. Huntley, ranked sixth, picked up his fifth fall of the season in the next bout, using a head scoop to pin Jake Masengale at the 4:24 mark. Huntley built up a big early lead with three first-period takedowns but missed a pair of early head scoop opportunities before making it stick late in the second frame. Junior heavyweight Adam Coon, ranked fourth, put an exclamation point on the dual with a 19-4 technical fall against Fletcher Miller in the final bout. Coon finished on six takedowns, including three in the final period, and added a four-point near fall off a bow and arrow in the first. He scored his final points, a counter takedown, with just one second remaining on the clock to secure the tech fall -- his second of the weekend. Coon improved to 10-0 on the season. Indiana claimed the dual's first bout, where Elijah Oliver used a big third period to defeat 20th-ranked senior/junior Conor Youtsey, 5-4, on a late takedown. Youtsey recorded the majority of the offense in the contest but could not finish on several chances in the first and seconds periods. He picked up a pair of stall points in the third, but Oliver countered a single shot to take the lead and iced it with another late takedown. The Wolverines bounced back with wins in each of the next three matches, including a major decision at 133 pounds from 17th-ranked senior Rossi Bruno, who blew up his bout against Alonzo Shepherd in the second period to secure a 15-2 win. Shepherd got too high in the top position early in the second period, and Bruno took advantage, reaching back and pulling him over his head and onto his back for a six-point move. The Wolverine added a pair of takedowns in the third and accumulating 3:02 in riding-time advantage. Sophomore/freshman Zac Hall was victorious in his dual-meet debut at 141 pounds, finishing on two takedowns en route to a 6-3 decision against Cole Weaver. After failing to finish on an early single shot, he countered a Weaver high crotch for a takedown in the closing seconds of the first period before adding an ankle pick early in the second. He stayed on the offensive, just missing on another late single to win his first ever match at Keen Arena. Sophomores Alec Pantaleo and Garrett Sutton rounded out the Wolverines' winners with decisions at 149 and 165 pounds, respectively. Pantaleo, ranked sixth, defeated Luke Blanton, 7-2, with three takedowns, including two in the first period and one at the final buzzer. 7. Four matches into Sunday's dual between No. 17 Minnesota and Purdue, both the momentum and the scoreboard had swung completely into the Boilermakers' favor. The visitors had won three consecutive matches - all with bonus points - and led 15-3 heading to 197 pounds. A major decision by No. 4 Brett Pfarr gave the home crowd and the Gophers a bit of life going into halftime, a spark that caught and turned to a roaring fire when Ben Morgan picked up a pin at 133 pounds in his career debut Those two wins were key in a five-match winning streak that ultimately helped the Gophers down the Boilers, 23-18. "[Today's result] was great. I think it was a great statement to the guys, being down and coming back. That's what athletics is about," said head coach J Robinson. "I told the guys at halftime, tough periods don't make character, what they do is reveal it. I think those five guys came out and did what they had to do to win. That's what Minnesota wrestling is about, finding a way to win." Though Pfarr may have started the rally for the Gophers, Morgan's pin was undoubtedly the showstopper, igniting the crowd of 3,136 in a towering cheer. His match with Luke Welch was scoreless midway through the first period when a single-leg shot appeared like it would yield a takedown for Welch. Along the edge of the mat, Morgan went to his own back and kicked his opponent over the top, flipping Welch to his back and earning the fall at 1:29. While Morgan's pin did something special for the team by finishing the comeback and putting Minnesota on top for the first time since the night's opening match, it also meant something very special for him on a personal level. "My family, my dad and uncle, both wrestled here in college and both coached after so I've been coming to these meets since I was a little kid," said Morgan. "Getting the pin and getting our team back, it's really a dream come true … my life's really come up to this moment, to this year. It couldn't be a better feeling." Morgan's win was the third in a run of five straight for Minnesota. That rally began with Pfarr setting a new career-high in points scored in his 25-11 major decision over Drake Stein heading into the intermission. Pfarr had set his previous high (23) in last Sunday's contest against Rutgers. Following the intermission, No. 9 Michael Kroells added another major decision to the Gophers' score with a 10-2 victory over Tyler Kral. The win was the second major for Kroells' in his last four Big Ten duals and pulled the Gophers to within four points heading to the other end of the weight spectrum at 125 pounds. After a one-match absence from the starting lineup, Steve Polakowski returned for the Gophers and picked up his second conference win of the season, a 9-3 decision over Ben Thorton. That win inched Minnesota to within one, 15-14, heading into Morgan's match at 133 pounds. With the applause and cheers from Morgan's pin still reverberating through the Sports Pavilion, No. 8 Tommy Thorn clinched the dual for Minnesota with an 8-4 decision over Danny Sabatello. Not only was the match the fifth straight win for the Gophers, it capped a run of 20 consecutive team points that flipped a 15-3 gap into a 23-15 lead and an assured victory going into the night's final contest. While the win was exactly what Minnesota had hoped to produce on Sunday afternoon, the dual did not begin as the Gophers planned. After a 5-4 decision for Brandon Kingsley at 157 pounds, a victory decided by the riding time point, Minnesota grapplers fell in three consecutive matches. Brad Dolezal, wrestling up a weight in his season debut, lost 11-0 to No. 7 Chad Welch at 165. Nick Wanzek fell to Jacob Morissey 18-2 at 174 before Will Balow was pinned at 184 pounds in his career debut. Those three wins accounted for all of Purdue's points until an overtime victory for Alex Griffin over No. 9 Jake Short in the afternoon's final match. Minnesota will now wrap up its Big Ten season with four road duals over the next three weekends, beginning this Friday in Iowa City when Minnesota takes on No. 2 Iowa in college wrestling's greatest rivalry. That match will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network beginning at 8 p.m. Central. Results: 157: Brandon Kingsley (Minnesota) dec. Doug Welch (Purdue) 5-4 165: No. 7 Chad Welch (Purdue) maj. dec. 8. No. 24 Kent State (11-3, 4-1 MAC) extended its winning streak to five with a 25-13 victory over Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at the M.A.C. Center. The Monarchs won a pair of overtime bouts in the first four matches, but the Golden Flashes claimed a pair of one-point decisions at 165 and 174 to claim the lead for good. That lead began with Tyler Buckwalter (Mill Hall, Pa.), who edged Seldon Wright, 5-4 at 165. In the second, Buckwalter countered a Wright shot and converted his own single to a double for a takedown and rode him for the rest of the period. Wright got to his feet twice early in the third, but Buckwalter returned him to the mat both times and was able to secure a key riding time point. In his first career dual meet, Jairod James (Bedford, Ohio) overcame 1-0 deficit after two periods to down Brooks Climmons 3-2. Despite moving up a weight class, James did not hesitate to attack the upper body of Climmons and got the lone takedown in the third on an underhook to a bear hug. Old Dominion trimmed the deficit to 16-13 with two matches left. Redshirt freshman Kyle Conel (Ashtabula, Ohio) then extended his winning streak to 11 matches with a 10-4 decision over Austin Coburn. Conel used an underhook to set up a six-point takedown and jump out to an 8-1 lead in the first. At 19-13, the Monarchs' only chance for a team win was a pin at heavyweight. But the pin would belong to redshirt freshman Devin Nye (Springfield, Ohio). Leading 2-0 and starting the second period from the bottom, Nye caught Andrew Snyder hanging his head low and flipped him to his back for his seventh pin of the season. The Flashes took five of the last six matches beginning with senior Ian Miller (Oak Harbor, Ohio), who came up just short of a tech fall in a 14-0 shutout of Austin Eads. Miller scored a takedown in the first five seconds of the match before Eads was called for stalling four times in the opening period. After an injury delay on an illegal move by Eads, Miller elected to keep wrestling. Fighting through pain, Miller turned a single leg shot into a six-point move in the third. While improving to 17-0 on the year, Miller passed Nick Nemeth for fifth place on Kent State's career win list with 122. Senior Mike DePalma (Jeannette, Pa.) scored a third period takedown against All-American Alexander Richardson, before dropping a 4-2 decision in sudden victory. Chris Mecate, another ODU All-American, also needed sudden victory to defeat Anthony Tutolo (Concord, Ohio) 3-1. The Flashes took their first lead when Mack McGuire (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) earned a forfeit at 133. Kent State will get an 11-day break from competition prior to a long MAC road trip. The Golden Flashes will visit Northern Illinois on Friday, Feb. 5, and Northern Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 6. 9. PHILADELPHIA -- Lorenzo Thomas joined an elite group of wrestlers at the University of Pennsylvania, picking up his 100th career win as the Quakers defeated Binghamton, 24-9, in an EIWA dual at The Palestra. Thomas scored an 8-1 decision over No. 17 Steven Schneider at 184 pounds to become the 11th Penn wrestler to win 100 matches during his career. Thomas is the first Quakers to reach the 100-win mark while competing mostly at 184 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Thomas scored an escape and a takedown in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. In the third, he added four points of nearfall and almost 3:00 of riding time to reach the century mark. The win from Thomas was one of seven in the dual meet for the Quakers who won their third consecutive dual meet to improve to 3-1 overall. No. 17 Casey Kent improved to 17-4 this season with a 4-0 decision over Jack McKeever. An early takedown in the first period and over 2:00 of riding time from that score were the big difference in the win for Kent. After the two teams split wins to start the dual, Penn won six straight bouts to take a commanding 24-3 lead. Marc Mastropietro started the run with a 5-1 win in sudden victory over Dylan Caruana. Mastropietro countered a Caruana shot with an upper body takedown and then added a pair of nearfall points for his second overtime win in as many matches. After a forfeit win for C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds, No. 18 May Bethea defeated Vincent DePrez, 9-6. Bethea had four takedowns in the win. Including two in the second period which helped overcome a first period deficit. Brooks Martino bumped up to 165 pounds with usual starter Ray Bethea out with injury. His bump was rewarded with a 6-3 decision over Anthony DePrez. Martino trailed, 3-1, midway through the match but scored a takedown before the end of the second period and another in the third for the win. Binghamton won the final two matches, including an overtime win from Mark Tracy over freshman Robert Ng at 197 pounds. Ng had the lead after a takedown in the second period, but a rally from Tracy in the third gave him a late lead. Ng forced overtime when Tracy was called for stalling a second time with 0:16 left in regulation, but a takedown 25 seconds into overtime was the difference in a 7-5 win for Tracy. Connor Calkins snuck out a 4-3 decision over Patrik Garren with a takedown in the final 10 seconds at heavyweight to close the dual. 11. The University of Wyoming wrestling team won nine of the 10 matches recording bonus points in five matches on their way to an impressive 35-2 win over Cal Poly on Saturday evening in the UniWyo Sports Complex in Laramie. It was the Pokes' second-consecutive win and the second-straight dual UW has recorded 30 or more points. The Cowboys moved to 3-5 overall with the Mustangs dropping to 1-7. "We don't take wins for granted and it was a good victory and a really dominating win," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "We showed a lot of guts in some matches tonight, but we also showed a lot of sloppiness, but when you are as aggressive as we were you will have that." The Cowboys won the first four matches against the Mustangs. Junior Drew Templeman earned the first win of the night at 125 pounds with a 6-5 decision over David Gonzalez. He got the win with a riding time point after riding Gonzales for 1:05 of the match. The Pokes took a 9-0 dual lead after a pin in overtime by freshman Drake Foster over the Mustang's Jason DelaCruz at 133 pounds. Foster trailed 6-1 after one period, but rallied in the second and was awarded a stalling point to send the match in overtime where he secured his first career dual pin. Sophomore Bryce Meredith responded with another win at 141 pounds this time a 9-2 decision over Colton Schilling. Meredith was up throughout the match and a reversal by Schilling late proved to be the only points allowed by Meredith, as he moves to 18-3 on the season and 7-1 in duals. Junior Cole Mendenhall was aggressive out of the gate earning a 12-2 major decision win over Joshy Cortez at 149 pounds. He scored three takedowns in the match and added a four-point nearfall in the opening frame to give the Pokes a 15-0 lead in the dual. The Mustangs' only win came at 157 pounds with Colt Shorts downing sophomore Archie Colgan by decision, 5-2. Sophomore Kyle Pope (165 pounds) responded with a technical fall that lasted 2:26 in a 19-4 route of Joe Granger. He recorded five takedowns in the match and two four-point nearfalls to make the dual 20-3 in favor of the Pokes. After Pope's win, senior Jace Jensen (174 pounds) added more bonus points with a 10-0 decision over Sohrab Movahedi. He recorded three takedowns in the match and one two-point nearfall. Junior Benjamin Stroh kept the Cal Poly's streak of scoreless wrestling going with a 16-0 technical fall over Mitch Woods. Stroh scored 10 points in the opening frame with a pair of four-point nearfalls. "As a team I saw us moving forward and Cal Poly retreating and we did a good job of staying in their face," Branch said. "When we move forward and be aggressive good things will happen. It is something we can build on and wake up tomorrow and get better." The Pokes closed out the dual with a pair of decision wins by Brandon Tribble (197 pounds) and Tanner Harms (285 pounds). Tribble downed J.T. Goodwin by a score of 5-4 after earning a takedown with 20 seconds left in the third period. Harms earned an 8-6 decision fueled by a reversal with 0:33 seconds left in the match to seal the 35-2 victory. 13. ITHACA, N.Y -- No. 6 Lehigh increased its dual win streak to nine, winning six of ten bouts in a 25-13 win over EIWA rival and No. 15 Cornell Saturday at the Friedman Wrestling Center. The Mountain Hawks capitalized on the Big Red being without both of their No. 1 ranked wrestlers, winning the first four weight classes and scoring bonus points in four of their six victories. The win, Lehigh's first over Cornell since 2011 and first in Ithaca since 2004, improves the Mountain Hawks' record to 11-1 overall and 6-0 against EIWA opponents. Cornell falls to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the EIWA. "Overall we wrestled really well," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "There were a couple of matches we could've wrestled a little better; 165 was a tough match for us. We were a little beat up coming into the match. We got beat up a little during the match. That was a tough one for us, but overall the guys wrestled pretty well." Sophomore Darian Cruz helped the Mountain Hawks to a fast start with a 12-3 major decision over Dalton Macri at 125. After a scoreless first period, Cruz hit a roll-through tilt for four near fall points in the second and added three takedowns in the third period. "Darian's had great third periods," Santoro said. "He's been putting the pace on early. When he doesn't score early he usually scores late. He's continued to do this and has been fun to watch. We're looking for big things from him. Lehigh's lead grew to 10-0 after 133 as the Big Red forfeited to senior Mason Beckman. Top-ranked Nahshon Garrett was unable to compete due to injury. Junior Randy Cruz made it three straight wins for Lehigh with a 4-0 decision over Mark Grey at 141. Cruz scored a takedown late in the first period and escaped in the second before riding out the third period. At 149, junior Laike Gardner won a wild 8-7 decision over Joey Galasso to give the Mountain Hawks a 16-0 lead after four bouts. Gardner had to rally from an early 4-0 hole after giving up an early takedown and two point near fall. Gardner battled back with two first period takedowns of his own including one at the buzzer. Tied at 6-6 late in the third, Gardner scored a takedown on the edge with 12 seconds remaining which held up. "He just keeps wrestling," Santoro said of Gardner. "That's Laike. He's just a tough kid. Mentally tough. He keeps wrestling for seven minutes and that's what won the match tonight." Cornell battled back to win the next three weight classes to get within 16-0. At 157 Dylan Palacio won an 8-5 decision over freshman Ian Brown. Palacio scored takedowns in the first and third periods and scored a key reversal after a Brown takedown. Duke Pickett avenged a loss to freshman Ryan Preisch at the Southern Scuffle with a 5-2 win at 165, which gave the Big Red back-to-back victories. Pickett scored the only two takedowns, including the go-ahead score in the third period. At 174, Brian Realbuto capped the Cornell run with an 11-0 major decision over junior Elliot Riddick. In addition to Garrett, Cornell was without top-ranked Gabe Dean at 184 as the Big Red bumped up Jon Jay Chavez to face senior Nathaniel Brown, who gave Lehigh some cushion with a 16-0 technical fall in 4:23. Brown lead 6-0 after one period after a takedown and four point near fall. In the second he added two more four point near falls and a two pointer to close out the match. Senior John Bolich dropped a 3-1 decision to Owen Scott at 197 after giving up a takedown in sudden victory, but the lack of bonus points for Cornell clinched the dual for Lehigh. In the final bout of the dual senior Max Wessell posted a strong 14-6 major decision over Jeremy Sweany at 285. "We need to keep doing the same thing we've been doing every week," Santoro said. "Obviously it's a big win over a conference rival. We really have to get healthy. There's a few guys we still need to get back. American's in two weeks. They have a lot of ranked wrestlers. Seeding implications will be big. This next week will be about getting healthy and the second one will be about getting ready for American." The Mountain Hawks will be off from competition next weekend and will return to action when they host American inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Saturday February 6 at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during normal business hours. Nolf chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 4-3 lead, with Martinez getting a first stall warning. Nolf took a 4-3 lead on a second Martinez stall with 1:10 on the clock. Nolf gained control of Martinez's shoulders at the :30 mark and nearly worked his way around for a takedown but the Illini was able to force a stalemate. Nolf, continuing his furious offensive pace, took a low shot that Martinez tried to counter, forcing a scramble in the middle of the mat. With the momentum in Nolf's favor over the full second period, Nolf turned the scramble into a takedown and then a chance to pick up the pin. The Lion freshman deftly forced Martinez's shoulders flat and got the fall, a second period pin at the 4:56 mark. 165: Red-shirt freshman Shakur Rasheed (Coram, N.Y.), ranked No. 16 at 165, battled No. 6 Steven Rodrigues. 18. Wear the wrong singlet, sit out the rest of the season. Former Penn State wrestler Cody Law's eligibility to continue wrestling this season at University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown may come down to his choice of uniform for an open tournament last month. This week the NCAA denied an appeal from Law seeking to overturn the organization's earlier decision that the redshirt sophomore would not be eligible to wrestle for Pitt-Johnstown this semester because he wore a Penn State uniform at the Nittany Lion Open in December, according to an exclusive story by Eric Knopsnyder for the Tribune-Democrat . "Open tournaments often feature wrestlers who are taking a redshirt year or are unable to make the starting lineup, as was the case with Law at Penn State," wrote Knopsnyder. "Those redshirting compete under an 'unattached' tag and wear something other than a school-issued uniform." Other than wearing the traditional blue-and-white Penn State singlet at the Nittany Lion Open, it appears that Law complied with basic requirements for a redshirt wrestler to be able to transfer from a Division I program and immediately compete for Division II UPJ. Law didn't wrestle in any dual meets this season, nor did he represent Penn State in any team tournaments. Law was granted a release by Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson. Expectations were that Law would wrestle for the Mountain Cats right away. Wearing the Penn State singlet at the Open was not an oversight on the part of Law. In an earlier interview, the 157-pound native of Windber, Pa. said he hadn't considered transferring from Penn State until after the tournament. The article also reported that neither Law nor his new coach, Pat Pecora, were optimistic that the NCAA would reverse its decision on a second appeal. "We're going to ask them to overturn it and see," Law said. "It's hard to be optimistic, because we're not appealing to anyone higher up - there's nothing higher than the NCAA - just the same people that denied it the first time." Pecora, who owns the distinction of having the most wins of any active college mat coach, weighed in on the issue by saying, "I don't think he violated the intent of the rule. I think that's what the NCAA has to look at (is) what's the intent of the rule and why. They're very strict with these things. I thought there would be a chance. I guess there still is an outside chance." Expectations were that Law would wrestle for Pitt-Johnstown right away, and help boost the Mountain Cats' chances to take the team title at the 2016 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. "He's the last piece, the last piece of the puzzle," said Pecora. A product of Forest Hills High School, Cody Law compiled an overall record of 115-26, and had been ranked among the top 15 160-pound wrestlers in the nation by InterMat. In his first season at Penn State in 2014-15, Law emerged as a starter at 157, starting in seven dual meets and posting a 13-7 record.
  19. GREELEY, Colo. -- The Northern Colorado Bears snapped their three-dual losing streak on Friday night, defeating the Cal Poly Mustangs 22-9. "I think we made huge advancements from last week," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "We're definitely moving in the right direction. For Tanner Davis to go out and get the win like he did for us is huge; I think it really shifted the momentum of the dual in our favor and got us back on track." The Bears won six of the ten matches, with the dual decision coming at heavyweight after a 19-19 tie up in team points following the 197 pound match. True freshman Rico Montoya picked up bonus points early for the Bears to put them in the lead, earning a technical fall over Jason DelaCruz, 17-0. Montoya picked up a takedown 17 seconds into the match, and continued his domination, picking up a four-point nearfall a minute later. Starting in the offensive position to start the second, Montoya tacked on another six points, earning a nearfall eleven seconds in, and another four to close out the period. A quick escape and a takedown set Montoya up for the tech fall, and he secured it with just a minute to go in the match with yet another 4-point nearfall. Timmy Box earned his third straight dual win on the season, taking down Joshy Cortez, 7-4. Box earned two takedowns in the first period and would add another in the second following a quick escape after choosing the down position. His win closed the team score gap, making it 9-8 in Cal Poly's favor going into the fifth match of the night. Redshirt sophomore Keilan Torres got his first win as an attached Bear wrestler and first dual win of his career after a 10-0 major decision win over Xavier Johnson. Torres got his first takedown of the match nearly a minute and a half in, and would secure a four-point nearfall 45 seconds later to make it 6-0 in his favor. Choosing down to start the second period, his lead would increase by one following an escape after just five seconds. Another takedown near the end of the second would make it 9-0, and after a non-scoring third period and a plus one for riding time, Torres would tack on four points to the overall team score, making it 15-12, Mustangs. Tanner Davis followed suit at 174 pounds, also earning the first dual win of his career after a hard fought match against Sohrab Movahedi. Davis picked up two takedowns in the first period, adding an escape point in the second to make it 5-1 going into the final period. Movahedi earned his own escape and takedown to kick off the third, and another takedown after Davis' escape to tie the match at six points apiece. A quick escape for Davis with only eleven seconds to go in the match, as well as a riding time advantage point, would make it 8-6, giving the Bears another three team points to tie the dual at 15-15. Following a major decision loss at 184 pounds, Trent Noon made up the ground to earn the major for the Bears, defeating J.T. Goodwin 10-1. Noon was the lone scorer of the match for the first t six minutes, only giving up an escape with 42 seconds left in the third period. He earned three takedowns, an escape, and a four-point nearfall throughout the match to secure the win and leave the dual tied 19-19, handing the reigns to UNC heavyweight Brian Macchione. In only his second match of the season, Macchione put up a massive fight to earn a win for the team. A takedown with 30 seconds left in the first period put him up 2-0, and a second stall call on his opponent, Spencer Empey in the second period left it 3-0 going into the final two minutes of the match. After picking up the riding time advantage, and an escape with 13 seconds to go in the third, Macchione secured his own decision win 6-3, as well as the dual win for the UNC squad, 22-19. "Brian is a very savvy, very smart wrestler. He knows what ever situation is -- in the first period he gave up the stall call instead of the escape -- that's him being mat savvy. He's a real student of the sport and he finds ways to win -- he finds a way to be our hero, and he did that tonight." The Bears have the rest of the weekend off, and will take to the road next week for a pair of duals against Boise State and Oregon State. 20. IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Six University of Iowa wrestlers scored bonus points to propel the second-ranked Hawkeyes to a 39-4 win over No. 20 Purdue on Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes got two falls, one technical fall, and three major decisions, but the biggest applause of the night came following an otherwise routine 6-0 decision at 141. Wrestling at 141 pounds in a dual for the first time in his career, senior Brody Grothus defeated Danny Sabatello in his first Carver-Hawkeye Arena appearance since December 2014. Grothus was an NCAA qualifier at 149 in 2014, but has wrestled just four times since missing the entire 2015 calendar year. On Friday, he scored a takedown in the first, added an escape and stalling point in the second, and finished a final takedown 25 seconds before leaving the mat to a standing ovation. "It's been a long time since I've wrestled in front of these fans," Grothus said. "The fans are special because they give you that little boost. I was in on that third period shot and I have to give some credit to the fans there, I heard them and they pushed me to get that last takedown." The Hawkeyes won nine-of-10 bouts overall and have won 50 of a possible 60 matches in the Big Ten Conference. Iowa is now 6-0 in the Big Ten and has outscored their opposition 215-34 in those six wins. As he's done all season, Thomas Gilman opened the dual with bonus points at 125. Gilman scored 11 takedowns to win 23-8 and earn his team-best fourth technical fall. In 10 duals at the leadoff spot, Gilman has five pins, four technical falls, and one major decision. Gilman's win gave Iowa a 5-0 team lead, and the Hawkeyes stretched it to 15-0 by surrendering just two points (both escapes) from 133-149. Cory Clark won 12-0 at 133, Grothus earned the 6-0 win at 141, and Brandon Sorensen won 8-2 at 149. Purdue scored a point via technical violation one minute, 54 seconds into the 157-pound match, but 43 seconds later Edwin Cooper, Jr. rolled Dough Welch to his back to record a first-period fall. That win gave Iowa a 21-0 lead at the break. "I just need to keep being consistent, keep getting wins, and move to a higher level," said Cooper. "The season is going well, but I need to keep scoring points and getting better." Purdue scored its first takedown of the night with 1:10 left in the first period at 165. Seventh-ranked Chad Welch erased a 2-0 deficit and scored 15 of the final 17 points to defeat Burke Paddock, 15-4. The Hawkeyes closed the dual with four straight wins, each one better than the next. Alex Meyer improved to 12-0 at home with an 8-4 decision at 174. Sammy Brooks scored a 14-4 major decision at 184. Nathan Burak improved to 16-0 with a 22-7 technical fall at 197, and Sam Stoll finished the evening with his team-best seventh fall. "I don't (often) say a whole lot about feeling good about things," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "I really like this team though because they score points. They are trying to score points, and they will need to score points. We will need them at Big Tens, at the NCAAs, and Sunday at Nebraska. We know they'll be ready and we have got to be ready." Iowa returns to the mat Sunday in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Hawkeyes (12-0, 6-0) and 11th-ranked Huskers (9-3, 3-3) meet at 2 p.m. (CT) at the Devaney Sports Center. NOTES: Attendance was 8,536… Iowa held a 37-4 advantage in takedown… The Hawkeyes are 6-0 in the Big Ten for the sixth time under Tom Brands… Iowa's returning All-Americans improved to 64-1… Gilman improved to 16-0 with 14 wins by bonus points; his 16-match win streak is a career high… Burak has won a career-best 16 straight matches with 10 wins by bonus points… Sam Stoll recorded his team-best seventh fall… Grothus had not wrestled a Carver-Hawkeye Arena since Dec. 6, 2014 against Michigan State… Meyer (12-0) and Stoll (7-0) are both undefeated at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in their careers. 21. STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's fifth-ranked wrestling team defeated No. 4 Missouri, who sandwiched 37 wins between a Jan. 31, 2014 loss to Oklahoma State and Friday night's 23-9 loss to the Cowboys in Gallagher-Iba Arena. "The fact that we stopped a steak was a good feeling," coach John Smith said. "You have to give respect to them, 37 matches in a row, that is pretty impressive and I'm glad we had an opportunity to put it to an end." The Cowboys picked up three team points after a nail-biter at 125 pounds, where No. 5 Eddie Klimara faced No. 10 Barlow McGhee. The bout was deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation, with each guy notching an escape. With no takedowns scored in sudden victory, the match went to a tiebreaker where Klimara picked up a quick escape in the first 30 seconds and rode out McGhee for the next 30 seconds to earn an exciting 2-1 win. At 133 pounds, No. 11 Zach Synon picked up a takedown within the first 30 seconds over Gary Wayne Harding. A little more than a minute later, Harding cut the lead to 2-1 with an escape. The Cowboy also earned up an escape to start the second period and went on to score a late takedown to lead the Tiger, 4-2, going into the third period. Harding finished the match strong with a full-period ride-out to win the bout 5-2. The win over tenth-ranked Synon was Harding's first win over a ranked opponent. "It feels good to win my positions," Harding said. "I have to break things down and wrestle all seven minutes as hard as I can go and if it takes more than that, wrestle that as hard as I can. I've just got to win my positions. I got a feel for his underhooks and his length, but mainly I just kept my pressure and kept wrestling. You could kind of feel the match start to weigh on him so I just kept pressing him and wrestled the whole seven minutes." Top-ranked Dean Heil picked up his second-straight win over a top-five opponent as he defeated No. 9 Matt Manley, 3-1. The bout was scoreless after the first period, with Manley starting the second on bottom. Heil rode out Manley for the full two minutes in the second period, keeping the match scoreless. To start the final period, Heil hit a reversal to open scoring, 2-0. Shortly after, Manley picked up an escape but it was not enough as Heil, with the addition of riding time, earned a 3-1 win. The Tigers won their first bout of the night at 149 pounds as No. 3 Lavion Mayes defeated No. 16 Anthony Collica, 5-2. Joe Smith, son of Coach John Smith, wrestled his first match in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday, taking on LeRoy Barnes. Joe opened scoring with a quick takedown, but Barnes escaped just as quickly. The Cowboy managed another takedown late in the period to lead 4-1 after the first. Two more takedowns and an escape in the second gave Joe a 9-3 lead. With just an escape coming from Barnes in the third period, Joe earned a decisive 10-4 victory. "It was definitely different [wrestling in Gallagher-Iba Arena]," Joe Smith said. "Your adrenaline gets pumping and the home crowd is definitely a lot bigger than anything at Stillwater High School so it was fun. Definitely the biggest dual crowd I've ever wrestled in front of. It was the first home so I'm glad it was big. I'm hoping they were there for the team and not just me. Your adrenaline starts pumping and then that lactic acid starts to hit you really hard in the arms when you're out there. But once I really got going I really started to feel my moves and techniques and it was fine." The 165-pound match proved to be interesting as No. 1 Alex Dieringer faced No. 5 Daniel Lewis, a redshirt freshman for the Tigers. Dieringer picked up two takedowns in the first period, which would be the deciding factor in the match. With Dieringer leading 4-2, the Tiger rode out Dieringer for both the second and third periods. However it was not enough as Dieringer edged Lewis, 4-3. At 174 pounds, third-ranked Kyle Crutchmer fell to No. 10 Blaise Butler in a sudden victory thriller, 3-1. Nolan Boyd became the fifth Cowboy of the night to knock off a top-10 opponent as he put on a great performance against No. 4 Willie Miklus, who owned the series between the two. Boyd stormed out with a takedown in the first 30 seconds. He followed up with another takedown with just eight seconds left in the period to lead 4-1. The Cowboy went on to pick up a reversal in the second period and a 4:31 of riding time to dominate the No. 4 wrestler, 7-2. "I think this was supposed to confirm that I have a different mindset," Boyd said. "I just going to take it and run with that. I saw Collica wrestle and realized that's the style that works for me -- keep my feet moving. That's what I did today." The Tigers picked up their third and final win at 197 pounds as true freshman Andrew Marsden faced No. 2 J'Den Cox. The freshman put up a fight but fell, 7-3. Fifth-ranked Austin Marsden was the only wrestler of the night to score bonus points, earning a 16-0 technical fall over James Romero in only 1:25. The Cowboy senior picked up a quick takedown and followed it with five nearfall counts, closing out an exciting team win for the Pokes. "We have to recognize that we have just so much more that we left out there, and we still controlled the match and won the key matches," John Smith said. "If you ever start to settle in and think you're in a good place, that's taking some steps backwards. If we're going to challenge for the championship, I don't think Missouri is the team to beat. We just need to keep pushing." Oklahoma State continues the weekend on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. as it hosts No. 16 Iowa State in a Big 12 battle. Results: 125: No. 5 Eddie Klimara (OSU) dec. 22. FARGO, N.D. -- North Dakota State University won four of the last five matches starting with Grant Nehring's impressive win at 165 pounds to defeat the Air Force Academy 23-14 in a Big 12 Conference wrestling match before 374 spectators Friday, Jan. 22, in the BBF. NDSU (2-4, 2-0 Big 12) is scheduled to host the University of Wyoming (2-5, 1-3 Big 12) at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, in the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. Air Force (5-3, 0-2 Big 12) led 10-8 after the first five matches before the momentum shifted to North Dakota State. Nehring, a sophomore from Kimball, Minn. (St. Cloud Apollo H.S.), recorded a first period takedown and two-point near fall to build an early 4-1 lead. He extended the advantage to 6-2 in the second. Nehring then added a takedown in the third, along with a point for nearly two minutes of riding time for a 9-2 win over Alex Lopouchanski. Lopouchanski entered Friday with a 7-0 dual record. The Bison regained the lead at 11-10 as Nehring improved to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in duals. It was the first of three straight wins for NDSU, as 174-pound redshirt freshman Blake Thompson outlasted Zen Ikehara 5-3. Then came North Dakota State senior 184-pounder Hayden Zillmer, who recorded a fall at 2:52 over Anthony McLaughlin. It was Zillmer's team-high eighth pin of the season. He improved to 24-3 overall and 6-0 in duals to extend his streak to 22 straight. The sixth-ranked Zillmer recorded his 98th career win to move into a tie for No. 11 all-time at NDSU. That pin also pushed the score to 20-10. Air Force gained a temporary reprieve and cut the deficit to 20-14 when Parker Hines posted a 12-4 decision over Logan Paxton at 197 pounds. NDSU junior 285-pounder Ben Tynan closed out the dual with a hard-fought 4-1 decision over Marcus Malecek. Tynan is now 16-8 this season and 5-1 in duals. The Bison had a familiar start to the dual when 16th-ranked Josh Rodriguez was relentless in racking up an 18-2 tech fall over Drew Romero. Rodriguez improved to 26-7 and 5-1 in duals in recording his seventh tech fall of the season. Air Force bounced back with three wins in the next four weight classes, receiving wins from 19th-ranked Josh Martinez at 133, a major decision from Dylan Hyder at 141 and decision from Zach Stepan at 157. Clay Ream, a 149-pound sophomore from Wentzville, Mo., grinded out a 2-0 decision for North Dakota State's only win during that run. 23. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana wrestling team edged Michigan State in the final bout of the day for a 20-15 win. Three Hoosiers -- Jake Danishek, Nate Jackson, and Luke Blanton -- earned bonus point victories to lift the Hoosiers to 6-1 on the season. Jake Danishek battled to his first career Big Ten dual win in the match-opening 157 lbs. bout. Danishek held an 8-3 lead in the final seconds of the third period, when Spartan Joe Johnson left the mat for a concussion evaluation. Johnson did not return for the final 35 seconds, giving Danishek the injury default win and an early 6-0 lead for the Hoosiers. Sixth-ranked Nate Jackson followed with a dominating 16-6 major decision over Shane Shadaia. Jackson opened with a 6-2 lead at the end of the first, then extended his lead to 12-5 two minutes later. A quick escape to start the third, followed by two takedowns from Jackson, put the bout out of reach for Michigan State. Jackson is now 24-2, and remains unbeaten in Big Ten dual play. The Hoosier junior has earned bonus point victories in 16 of his 24 wins. Garret Goldman is off to the best start of his career against Big Ten competition, and he continued that with a 3-1 decision over Dimitrius Renfroe in the heavyweight bout. The bout was tied at 1-1 with 30 seconds remaining in the third period when Goldman secured the decisive takedown. Goldman is on a three-match winning streak in the Big Ten with an overall record of 13-10. Elijah Oliver extended Indiana's lead to 16-9 with a tight 4-3 decision over rising Spartan Mitch Rogaliner. Oliver took the lead with 90 seconds remaining in the match, picking up an escape to break the 3-3 tie. The Spartans chipped back into Indiana's lead with decision wins in the 133 lbs. and 141 lbs. bouts, bringing the team score to 16-15. The match headed to the decisive final bout of the day, pitting Indiana's Luke Blanton against Michigan State's Kaelan Richards. Blanton started the bout with a takedown, and then gave up an escape for a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. Two more takedowns by Blanton in the second extended his lead to 7-2 with two minutes remaining. Blanton left his foot on the gas and picked up the major decision to secure an Indiana win. Although the Hoosiers and Spartans split the bout card, taking five wins each, the Spartans were unable to pick up any bonus point victories. Valiant performances in defeat by Bryce Martin, Jake Masengale, and Cole Weaver prevented major decisions kept the Spartans at bay. With that win, the Hoosiers earn their third Big Ten victory. It's the first time since the 2009-10 season that Indiana had at least three wins in the Big Ten. Results: 157: Jake Danishek (IU) won by injury default over Joe Johnson (MSU), 5:25. 24. NORMAN -- The No. 7 University of Oklahoma wrestling team registered seven wins in a 28-9 victory over No. 16 Iowa State Friday night in the Lloyd Noble Center. The dual was part of the Beauty and the Beast event held in conjunction with the OU women's gymnastics team. Three of the Sooners' seven wins were bonus-point victories, including wins by fall by Davion Jeffries (149 pounds) and Ross Larson (285 pounds). Ryan Millhof started off the Sooners at 125 pounds with a 6-1 decision over Kyle Larson. Millhof recorded two 2-point nearfalls in the bout's second period before tallying a reversal in the third. The sophomore secured the riding-time point with 2:49 of riding time. "He (Millhof) really sparks the team," OU head coach Mark Cody said. "He has really worked hard this year and really stepped up for the team." In the 133-pound bout, No. 4 Cody Brewer recorded a 12-4 major decision over No. 9 Earl Hall. The redshirt senior registered a huge 4-point nearfall in the second period to make the score 10-4 after two periods. Brewer escaped to begin the third and secured the riding-time point for the major. Sophomore Trae Blackwell tallied two takedowns, an escape and two penalty points en route to a 7-3 decision over John Meeks in the 141-pound matchup. Freshman Jeffries gave the Sooners a 16-0 lead in the match with a win by fall over No. 20 Gabe Moreno in 3:58 that brought the Lloyd Noble Center crowd of 3,444 to its feet. The bout was knotted at 4-4 before Jeffries secured the pin. In the 174-pound bout, redshirt junior Matt Reed downed Lelund Weatherspoon by 6-1 decision. Reed took a 2-0 advantage after the opening period and tallied another takedown, an escape and the riding-time point in the win. In sudden victory one, Andrew Dixon defeated Dane Pestano, 6-4, at 184 pounds. The bout was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation before Dixon registered a takedown late in the extra period. Redshirt junior Ross Larson ended the contest with a bang, recording a win by fall in 2:54 over Quean Smith. Larson tallied two first-period takedowns and led 4-1 when the pin came. "This win is huge," Cody said. "We took a couple of big lumps a couple of weeks back, but we got back to the grind and most of our practices now we hold each of our guys accountable to make sure that they are working hard.
