Haines granted release from Ohio State, will transfer to Lock Haven
InterMat Staff posted an article in Big 10
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Thomas Haines, a redshirt freshman on the Ohio State wrestling team at heavyweight, has been granted a release and will transfer, head coach Tom Ryan announced today. Haines is a four-time Pennsylvania state champion from Solanco High School and was ranked as a top-10 recruit nationally in 2014. He signed in the same class as Kyle Snyder, who moved up from 197 lbs. to heavyweight. That prompted Haines to seek a destination to continue his academic and athletic career and he ultimately intends to enroll at Lock Haven, located three hours from his hometown of New Providence, Pa. "Thomas is a great kid," said Ryan. "We signed him out of high school with the thought that he and Kyle were going to be the `twin towers' at 197 and heavyweight. Fast forward and Kyle becomes a heavyweight and we certainly understand it doesn't work for them both to be in the same weight class. "He leaves here on the best of terms," Ryan continued. "As tough as it is to see him go, we understand it. The most rational decision is for him to move forward. Our staff has a great relationship with his family -- they've poured their life into raising him -- and we wish him the best of luck." Haines appeared is one varsity match for the Scarlet and Gray and it was a memorable one. He won a tight 3-2 decision over 13th-ranked Brooks Black of Illinois on Jan. 3 in Ohio State's 22-17 win over the Illini. In open tournaments, Haines was 12-2 this year with a title at the Penn State Open. He had two pins and one major decision. "I had a choice to make," said Haines. "I could either try to beat Kyle in a wrestle-off or at the NCAA Tournament. I've really enjoyed my time at Ohio State and the relationships I've built with my teammates and the coaches. I'll take a lot of positive memories with me. But I had to make the most logical decision for me and that was to transfer." -

Martinez, Woulfe among leaders in NCAA Wrestling Awards standings
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA has released the first week of standings for the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Awards that will be awarded in March at the respective Division I, II and III Wrestling Championships. The inaugural NCAA Wrestling Awards were presented at the 2012 wrestling championships. The three awards, given in each division, honor the Most Dominant Wrestler as well as the student-athletes that have accumulated the most falls and the most technical falls throughout the course of the regular and postseasons. For falls and tech falls to be counted towards a student-athletes total they must come against opponents in the same division. Ties in the two categories are broken based on the aggregate time. The initial standings for falls in Division I is paced by a pair of Midshipmen as Navy 197-pounder Michael Woulfe has 11 falls, while 184-pounder Mathew Miller has nine. In Division II, Pittsburgh-Johnstown 184-pounder Travis McKillop has nine falls to hold a narrow lead over Western State 125-pounder Ronald Wardleigh and Maryville (Missouri) 141-pounder Nate Rodriguez. Christopher Chorzepa of Williams has 13 falls at 184 pounds to lead Division III by one fall over Messiah 184-pounder Josh Thomson. The national leader for all divisions is in Division I where 2015 national champion Isaiah Martinez of Illinois has 11 tech falls at 157 pounds, which is the same total of tech falls he had in winning the award last season. He is five falls ahead of a group of four wrestlers with six tech falls, including 2015 national champion Gabriel Dean of Cornell at 184 pounds. The Division II standings feature a four-way tie of wrestlers with five tech falls and another four wrestlers have compiled four. August Mizia of Mercyhurst holds the tiebreaker as he has compiled his five tech falls at 174 pounds in an aggregate time of 15:14, ahead of Wheeling Jesuit 149-pounder Dominick Nania's time of 16:54. Division III also has a tie at the top as a pair of 149-pounders each has eight tech falls. Alex Kramer of Ursinus holds the tiebreaker over Zach Joseph of Springfield with an 18-minute edge in aggregate time (24:11 to 42:11). The Most Dominant Wrestler standings are calculated by adding the total number of points awarded through match results and dividing that number by the total number of matches wrestled. Points per match are awarded as follows. A 12-match minimum is required to be eligible for the Most Dominant Award. * Fall, forfeit, injury default or DQ = 6 points (-6 points for a loss) * Tech falls = 5 points (-5 points for a loss) * Major decision = 4 points (-4 points for a loss) * Decision = 3 points (-3 points for a loss) The initial Most Dominant Wrestler standings will be released later this season in order to allow wrestlers to achieve the 12-match minimum that is required to be eligible for the standings. -

After pleading guilty to multiple criminal charges last month for leaving the scene of a serious accident he caused last year, two-time NCAA wrestling champ Jack Cuvo was sentenced to serve time in a work-release program Tuesday. Cuvo, who was a three-time Pennsylvania high school state champion wrestler before winning back-to-back Division I titles for East Stroudsburg University in 1988 and 1989, was sentenced to 3 to 23 months in the work-release center in Dauphin County, Pa. where the accident took place in March 2015. He is to start serving that sentence on Feb. 28. The wreck took place near the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. during the 2015 Pennsylvania state wrestling championships. Police said Cuvo drove away after crashing his SUV into a vehicle driven by Steven Bennett, who suffered severe injuries, including head trauma. Bennett told the judge he doesn't remember the accident, but has lingering problems, including memory loss and inability to focus. Bennett told Cuvo, “I hope, Jack, you never experience what I did. But, I hold no grudges about what happened that day." Cuvo's attorney told the judge his client was returning to the crash scene when he was stopped by police, adding that the accident was not drug- or alcohol-related. "I'm happy no one died," Cuvo said, apologizing to Bennett. "I panicked because, No. 1, I was in shock," he said. "My goal wasn't to get away. My full intention was to come back." This incident was just one of many in the past decade for the 48-year-old Cuvo. Just last week, a judge in Northampton County, Pa. rejected a plea deal regarding an alleged incident last summer where the former mat champ had been charged with forcing a teenager to drink alcohol. In that case, Cuvo willing to admit he endangered a 14-year-old boy by driving drunk with the teen last August in Nazareth, Pa., but refused to admit he furnished vodka to the teen. That case is now set to go to trial in April.

Rob SulaverHere's how Sulaver, a walk-on wrestler who competed at 157 pounds for the Wolverines and now a personal trainer in New York City, described the show at his website: "Star experts, nutritionists, and trainers will coach overweight Americans on how to lose weight on their unique diet and fitness plans. "My Diet is Better Than Yours" features celebrity trainers including Rob "Tank Top" Sulaver (founder and CEO of Bandana Training) ... Unlike NBC's "The Biggest Loser", contestants on ABC's "My Diet is Better Than Yours" will be following their expert's unique diets from their home. There's no 'weight loss camp' -- only real people working real jobs with real families -- doing the best they can to lose weight." Sulaver goes on quote Shaun T., host of "My Diet is Better than Yours", "'Unlike other diet shows, this is real life. They're going to work, they're coming home and they have to make their own food." To measure each contestant's fitness progress, contestants will be evaluated in challenges created by celebrity trainer Anna Kaiser, whose clients include Kelly Ripa, Shakira, and Sarah Jessica Parker. In order to qualify for the final weigh-in and be eligible for the $50,000 grand prize, contestants must finish the final milestone challenge -- a half marathon. "To be able to bring my background in aggressive training, sports nutrition, and exercise science to the national conversation on health and fitness is my dream," said Sulaver. "Helping people rediscover their health, their strength, and their general sense of badassery is what I love to do and I can't wait to share it with the world." Rob Sulaver (Photo/Michigan Sports Information)Sulaver has his work cut out for him. He's stepping in to work with La'Tasha Givens, who dropped trainer Carolyn Barnes. According to People magazine, Barnes' original plan focused on ways for Givens to burn calories with everyday tasks. The former Michigan matman shook things up by taking Givens to the gym for an intense workout. "My background is in sports performance, so it's like how professional athletes train, which is no joke," Sulaver told People. "It was a big wake-up call and a dramatic shift in terms of what La'Tasha had been doing." One possibility that looms large over Sulaver: Givens could give him the boot, much like she did to her first personal trainer. "In an interesting twist, the competitors hold the power of elimination," Sulaver said. "Just like real life, trainers can be sent packing if tempers flare or goals go unachieved. The stakes are high and the struggle is real." Sulaver is not afraid of the spotlight. As a walk-on freshman during the 2002-03 season, he was third on the depth chart at 157 pounds behind a pair of Michigan NCAA All-Americans -- Ryan Bertin and Mike Kulczycki. When both veterans were taken out of the lineup because of injuries, Sulaver -- son of a University of Illinois wrestler -- stepped in, making an auspicious debut at Cliff Keen Arena by immediately taking down and pinning his first opponent. After stepping away from the mat to concentrate on academics his sophomore year, Sulaver returned to action. As a fifth-year senior, Sulaver placed eighth at 157 at the 2007 Big Ten conference championships. Further evidence of Sulaver's fearlessness ... he was a theater major while at Ann Arbor. In an interview with Michigan MGoBlue.com's "Off The Mat" feature, Sulaver connected the two endeavors, saying, "I have found so many parallels between athletics and theater. The more you learn about one, the more it helps you learn about the other. I think they really do complement each other more than one would ever assume. What is also nice for me is when sometimes wrestling isn't the greatest, I have theater, and when the opportunities aren't there in theater, I have wrestling to focus on." Sulaver steps into his new role on "My Diet is Better than Yours" -- a temporary, midseason replacement for the ABC hit drama "How to Get Away with Murder" -- this Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/8 CT.

There's a new wrestling facility at a community YMCA named in honor of Dan Gable. On Thursday, the all-time great wrestler, coach and ambassador for the sport spoke at the facility officially named the Dan Gable Development and Training Center. No, it's not in his hometown of Waterloo, Iowa ... nor at his college alma mater, Iowa State ... nor at University of Iowa, where he coached. In fact, it's nowhere in the state of Iowa. The new wrestling facility is at the YMCA in Naples, Florida. Gable, 67, and his wife Kathy visit the Naples area frequently, often with children and grandchildren, the Naples News reported Friday. The official Greater Naples YMCA website added, "Upon learning of our desire to establish a YMCA youth wrestling program he volunteered his services." "This facility is named in honor of a YMCA kid from Waterloo, Iowa who became an American sports legend," is how the Naples YMCA website described the inspiration in naming its new Dan Gable Development and Training Center. "Dan Gable experienced the YMCA as a safe place away from home. From boxing to ping-pong, he was introduced to a variety of sports at the YMCA." "After landing his first job at the YMCA as a locker room attendant, earning 35 cents an hour at age nine, (Gable) earned the value of responsibility. Gable's first state championship was earned in swimming for the YMCA, before concentrating solely on a wrestling career that brought him to fame." " ... (Gable) credits the YMCA's core-valued programs as the platform that shaped his social skills, work ethic and competitive drive." Gable helped raise money for the new wrestling facility named in his honor. Thursday marked his second appearance at the Greater Naples YMCA. The wrestling room at the new Dan Gable Development and Training Center is designed with permanently padded walls and a 5-inch recessed subfloor filled with three inches of foam and a 2-inch-thick wrestling mat. It will be the home for a youth wrestling program, technique clinics and an advanced program for high school athletes to hone their skills. The YMCA SWFL Elite high school wrestling club practices at the Y each week and has participated in the Disney Duals. The Greater Naples YMCA would like to grow the sport of wrestling and take the next step toward its growth. According to the Naples Y website, Phase II of their plan is to fundraise for competition-grade wrestling mats and a mat hoist for the Y's gymnasium. Gable has agreed to help the Y achieve this goal. Once this goal is complete, wrestling competitions -- including showcase dual meets and youth tournaments -- would easily be accommodated at the Greater Naples YMCA. Dan Mack Gable was undefeated in varsity competition at Waterloo West High School, winning three consecutive Iowa state championships. He went on to earn 117 more victories at Iowa State University, where he was a two-time NCAA champ and three-time All-American. After college, Gable won a gold medal in freestyle at the 1972 Munich Olympics without surrendering a single point. Upon returning from the Olympics, Gable launched his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Iowa. He took the helm of the Hawkeye mat program in 1976, where his teams won 21 straight Big 10 team championships and claimed NCAA team titles 15 times. Gable coached 152 All-Americans, 45 NCAA champs, 106 Big Ten champions and 12 Olympians, including four gold, one silver and three bronze medalists. He continues to work toward growing and promoting the sport worldwide.

U.S. Women's Wrestling National Team training in Iowa City this week
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
The U.S. Women's National Wrestling Team is hosting a National Team training camp in Iowa City, Iowa from January 18-22. The team is training in the Dan Gable Wrestling Complex at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and is guests of the University of Iowa wrestling team and Hawkeye Wrestling Club. The camp is being conducted by National Women's Coach Terry Steiner, and includes many of the top women's freestyle wrestlers in the nation. These athletes are expected to be in the field at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling, which returns to Carver-Hawkeye Arena, April 9-10. This is the second time that Coach Steiner has conducted a National Team training camp in Iowa City, as a similar camp was held in 2012, another Olympic year. Steiner was a 1993 NCAA champion for Iowa, where he wrestled for the legendary Dan Gable. "There are a bunch of different purposes. We have to come back together as a national team at camp. This is first time we have all been together as a team since the World Championships and that's always important. We have some technical and tactical areas we need to clean up as a team," said Steiner. "The Olympic Trials are in Iowa City. Being in that arena, feeling the energy in Carver-Hawkeye and the flow of it, I want the girls to be very comfortable when we go in there in April. To train here for a week, they will be a lot more comfortable. Then, just to be around the Iowa program, which is known for its tradition of excellence, is invaluable. Just being around Tom and Terry Brands, men's stars Tony Ramos and Brent Metcalf, people like that, is very important for them to see the intensity and feel the energy," he said. The women working out this week consists of a majority of the Women's National Team, which includes of the first three ranked wrestlers in the nation in each weight class based upon the 2015 World Team Trials. Also participating in the camp are additional U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes, top women athletes from a variety of national wrestling clubs, and four guest athletes from other nations. At the end of the week, a special wrestle-off will be held on Friday, Jan. 22 to determine four positions on the U.S. women's freestyle team that will compete in the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament. The weight classes contested will be 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg and 69 kg. "In Iowa City, the University of Iowa and the state of Iowa, wrestling is very much appreciated. For so many of these women, coming through the ranks, their careers have not been so appreciated. It will also give the Iowa City community and the state of Iowa a chance to get to know our national team and our stars. Finally, we still have five weights to qualify for the Olympics, so we will have wrestle-offs around the Iowa-Purdue dual meet. We need to determine who will go to the Pan American Olympic Qualifier for us. There are a lot of reasons to be here," said Steiner. Among the U.S. athletes at the training camp are three-time World champion and five-time World medalist Adeline Gray at 75 kg, 2008 World champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun at 48 kg, World champion and four-time World medalist Elena Pirozhkova at 63 kg, World champion and three-time World medalist Helen Maroulis at 53 kg, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller at 69 kg, two-time World bronze medalists Alyssa Lampe at 48 kg and Sally Roberts at 63 kg, 2015 World bronze medalist Leigh Jaynes at 58 kg and 2012 U.S. Olympian Kelsey Campbell at 58 kg The international athletes at training camp include World silver medalist Petra Olli of Finland, World bronze medalist Anastasia Grigorieva of Latvia, World bronze medalist Epp Mae of Estonia, Sophie Edwards of Great Britain and Brianne Barry of Canada, along with Finnish coach Ahto Raska. One of the club athletes participating is Lauren Louive, who trains in Iowa City with the Hawkeye WC. The special wrestle-off on Friday will be a best-of-three series in each weight class. The first match of each series will be held in the Dan Gable Wrestling Complex in Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 10 a.m. The second match is set for 6:30 p.m. on the competition mat inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena, prior to the start of the Iowa vs. Purdue Big Ten dual at 8 p.m. Any rubber matches, if necessary, will be held after the conclusion of the Iowa vs. Purdue dual. Tickets for the Iowa vs. Purdue dual meet and the women's special wrestle-off are $12 for adults, $8 for those 18 and under, free for UI students and children five years and under. Jake Faust, Conner Hartmann, Zach Finesilver and Mitch Finesilver all registered extra points in the triumph. The Blue Devils improve to 2-5 on the year as they go 1-1 on the West Coast tour. Cal Poly falls to 1-5 overall. Faust finished the weekend of duals 2-0 and improves to 5-2 in duals. A forfeit at 174 by the Blue Devils coupled with a decision for Cal Poly at 184 launched the Mustangs back in front 12-4 through the first four matches. Undefeated in duals this season and 15-1 overall, fifth-ranked Hartmann didn't even break a sweat in pinning JT Goodwin in 22 seconds to pull the Blue Devils within two, 12-10. The fall was his second of the weekend, fourth of the year and the fastest of his career. Brendan Walsh did his part at 285, edging Spencer Empey by a 4-2 decision, to put the Blue Devils back in the lead 13-12. The redshirt senior took a 2-0 lead into the second period and never relinquished his lead to pick up win No. 10 on the year. The redshirt freshman extended his lead in the third to score a crucial five points with a 25-10 technical fall. A perfect 6-0 in duals this season and 17-5 on the year, Mitch didn't skip a beat for the Blue Devils at 149. Blair Academy, St. Paris Graham shine during busy weekend
InterMat Staff posted an article in High School
As previewed, the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend was one chock full of high profile dual meets. In addition, there were many interesting developments on both the national team and individual rankings. St. Paris Graham (Ohio) makes strong statement at St. Edward Two weeks after a home win against currently No. 3 Blair Academy (N.J.), the No. 5 Falcons traveled to No. 7 St. Edward (Ohio) and delivered a 37-17 wallop in winning nine of the individual matches. Things started out well enough for the hosts, as Bryce Andonian earned a 15-9 victory over fellow freshman Jordan Crace in the opening bout at 106 pounds. However, it quickly turned favorable for St. Paris Graham, as the Eagles were missing state qualifier Matt Kazimir from the lineup yet again at 113 pounds; as a result Jeff Thomas was able to get a 10-4 win over reserve 106 pound wrestler Angelo Rini. The next swing bout came at 126 pounds, where Graham's Mitch Moore, ranked No. 11 nationally, was able to make a first-period five point throw last the duration of the bout in a 5-3 victory over fellow state champion Allan Hart. At 132 pounds, another St. Edward freshman came up with a tossup match victory, Sam Dover beating returning state placer Ryan Thomas 5-3 in overtime. However, the Falcons responded with an 11-3 major decision victory from No. 7 Brent Moore at 138 pounds, as he beat No. 6 Hunter Ladnier to stretch the dual meet lead to 16-6. At that point, barring an upset somewhere along the way, the dual meet was in the bag for St. Paris Graham. With a 7-2 decision from No. 16 Rocky Jordan (145), a 6-4 decision from state placer Garrett Jordan (160), and a pin in 2:29 from No. 2 Alex Marinelli (170), Graham was now one match from clinching the dual meet. That came at 195 pounds when returning state qualifier Kanan Sarver pinned Cody Howard at the 45 second mark. No. 16 Jared Campbell cut the St. Edward deficit to 31-17 with a technical fall at 220 pounds. Then, the final damage was done by freshman Johnny Shafer, the normal 220 pound wrestler for Graham; trailing 6-3 in the third period, he caught Mike O'Malley poorly executing a cradle and earned the pin at the 4:39 mark. Blair Academy wins inaugural Who's Number One Duals No. 3 Blair Academy (N.J.) went 4-0 on Saturday at the Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania to win the event put on by FloWrestling. In preliminary pool competition, the Buccaneers most notably beat No. 6 Clovis (Calif.) 47-12, winning eleven of 14 bouts; including the most notable bout, which was at 195 pounds with No. 3 Chase Singletary beat No. 5 Josh Hokit 4-3. Additional wins came against Delbarton (N.J.) 51-9 and Holy Cross (N.J.) 67-9. In the tournament's other pool, No. 9 Bethlehem Catholic (Pa.) emerged on top after a 28-26 upset victory against No. 2 Bergen Catholic (N.J.). The teams split bouts at seven apiece in a back-and-forth dual meet where there were three ties and at least four lead changes after the opening bout. The first six matches of the dual meet were all decisions, with six bonus point bouts among the last eight, including the last four of the meet. The opening bout was a key tossup, as Ryan Anderson (Bethlehem Catholic) upended Carmen Ferrante at 113 pounds; Ferrante placed eighth at the Beast, while Anderson was round of 12, though each lost by two points to a common opponent to end their tournaments. Bergen Catholic would take its first lead at 6-3 after victories from No. 18 Gerard Angelo (120) and No. 1 Nick Suriano (126); Angelo winning 4-3 and Suriano 4-1 over No. 2 Luke Karam. The dual meet was tied again when Joey Gould (Bethlehem Catholic) beat unexpected Beast of the East champion Chris Foca 8-5 at 132 pounds, then Bergen Catholic re-took the lead when backup 138 pound wrestler Wade Unger beat Josh Pacsy 1-0; Bethlehem Catholic tied it back up with Stephen Maloney's 5-4 decision over Ricky Cabanillas 145. Bethlehem Catholic flipped their 152 and 160 pound wrestlers from what had been competing in tournament setting. Bergen Catholic took the lead at 13-9 through a major decision from Brady Ford over Ryan Zeiner at 152, while the Hawks snatched it back at 15-13 through Cole Karam's pin in 0:54 over Anthony Astarian. A replica of a semifinal from the Beast of the East saw the dual meet lead expand to 18-13 as No. 6 Michael Labriola beat No. 10 Joe Grello 8-5. Three consecutive wins for Bergen Catholic would turn that deficit into a 26-18 lead with two bouts remaining in the dual meet. Those wins came courtesy a 3-2 decision from freshman Josh McKenzie against two-time state qualifier Adam Soldridge at 182 pounds, a second period pin from No. 6 Kevin Mulligan at 195, and a 12-3 major decision from state placer Danny DeLorenzi at 220. Cutting the deficit in half was Niko Camacho with a 14-2 major decision, before Bethlehem Catholic junior 106 pound wrestler Josh Glenn became the day's hero with a pin at the 4:44 mark. Both the Crusaders and the Hawks earned decisive victories over No. 12 Lake Highland Prep (Fla.); Bergen Catholic winning ten bouts in a 44-21 victory, Bethlehem Catholic earning nine match victories in their 43-21 victory. Most notable matches were those by No. 5 Joey Silva (126) and No. 12 Elijah Cleary (170); Silva lost 6-0 and 5-2 to Suriano and Karam respectively, while Cleary beat Labriola 4-3 but lost 7-6 to Grello. The championship final was a decisive 36-18 victory for Blair Academy in which they won nine of fourteen bouts over Bethlehem Catholic; most notable was the Beast of the East final replica, where No. 4 Brandon Dallavia beat Labriola 1-0 at 170 pounds. The third place bout saw Bergen Catholic beat Clovis 46-15 winning ten of 14 bouts, including Kevin Mulligan avenging an overtime loss from last weekend at the Doc Buchanan, beating Josh Hokit 3-0 on this occasion. Carl Sandburg suffers narrow setbacks to two fellow ranked Illinois teams In hosting their annual multi-team dual meet event, No. 15 Carl Sandburg (Ill.) took on their two most direct competitors for the state dual meet title, No. 8 Oak Park River Forest and No. 19 Marmion Academy; it should be noted that Carl Sandburg and Marmion Academy will most likely meet in the mid-week qualifying matches to make the team state tournament, which occur right after the individual state tournament is done. Marmion Academy rode into Saturday's showdown with the Eagles on a high, having earned a 54-15 victory at home over No. 31 Montini Catholic (Ill.) on Friday evening. However, things did not start so hot, as the host Eagles jumped out to a 12-0 lead through three bouts. The fourth bout saw No. 7 Nathan Traxler up a weight class, and earn a pin at 195 pound to cut the deficit in half. Three matches later, the dual meet was tied at 15-all at the hallway point, after Sean McKenna earned a 3-1 decision for Marmion at 106 pounds. Carl Sandburg took victories in three of the next four bouts to snag a 29-18 lead headed into the last three bouts; that run of bouts ending at 132 pounds, where No. 6 Rudy Yates earned a 17-4 major decision over state runner-up Anthony Cheloni. A.J. Jaffe earned a pin in 1:00 to cut the deficit to five for Marmion Academy, where both teams wrestled a de facto backup, but if was the Cadets cut the deficit to two with a 7-0 victory from freshman Brady Gross. The last match at 152 pounds was "winner take all" with No. 18 (at 160) Trace Carello beating John Prieto 3-2. The dual meet against the visiting Huskies started out similarly for Carl Sandburg, as the Eagles led 18-0 after three bouts; No. 18 Patrick Brucki with a pin at 182, state qualifier Cole Bateman with a pin at 195, and then a forfeit at 220 as two-time state qualifier Allen Stallings was unavailable for OPRF due to college football visits. The Huskies stopped the bleeding with a 3-2 ultimate tiebreak victory from Christopher Middlebrooks at 285 pounds, and then further cut into the deficit with an 18-7 major decision from P.J. Ogunsanya at 106. The teams would split the next four bouts, and it would be a 24-17 lead for Carl Sandburg headed into the final five matches of the afternoon. Jamie Hernandez (138) earned a pin and No. 1 Isaiah White (160) earned a technical fall for the obvious Oak Park River Forest victories in that stretch; White's victory gave the Huskies a 31-27 lead headed into the last bout. In between Mikey Ordonez gave OPRF another victory at 145 pounds, 11-10 over Alex Hirschfeld; with John Prieto's 152 pound victory regaining the lead for the Eagles at 27-26. The last match was a 2-1 tiebreak victory for Rolan Sturkey over state placer Brian Krasowski. Belle Vernon with strong statement at Escape the Rock Coming off runner-up finishes at their previous two tournaments, No. 11 Belle Vernon (Pa.) sought a tournament victory to add to their season's portfolio. The Leopards exited the Escape the Rock Tournament held at Council Rock South (Pa.) with that accomplishment in hand, doing so by placing ten wrestlers and scoring 221.5 points. Weight class championships were won by No. 3 Austin Bell (170) and No. 6 Jarod Verkleeren; Verkleeren winning the featured final of the evening, 6-4 in overtime over No. 9 Eric Hong (Kiski Prep, Pa.) Finishing second for Belle Vernon was Mitch Hartman (160); third place finishers were Zach Hartman (132), Brock Godzin (138), and Derek Verkleeren (160); Jacob Dunlop (106) placed fourth; Billy Korber (285) took home fifth; while finishing sixth were Milton Kobaly (182) and Mick Fine (195). Tournament runners-up were No. 26 Boyertown (Pa.), who placed seven wrestlers in scoring 166.5 points despite the absence of Jakob Campbell, who is ranked No. 11 nationally at 113 pounds. The Bears were led by No. 2 Jordan Wood, who won the tournament at 220 pounds, with a 5-1 victory in the final over No. 17 Seth Janney (Malvern Prep, Pa.). Finishing runner-up was Lucas Miller (126), Tommy Killoran (285) placed third, Gregg Harvey (182) took fourth, placing sixth were John Cooley (138) and Hunter Vogels (152), while Chris Berry (145) placed eighth. It was a close battle for third between the hosts Council Rock South (Pa.) and No. 20 Malvern Prep (Pa.); Council Rock South secured the position with 151 points, while Malvern Prep was fourth with 149, as both teams put seven on the podium. Council Rock South was anchored by top of the podium finishes from No. 12 Zach Trampe (132) and Riley Palmer (138), with Dylan Schwartz (152) placing second; while No. 7 Michael Beard (182) was the sole champion for Malvern Prep, with No. 17 Rashon Lusane (195) and Janney placing second. Rounding out the tournament's weight class champions were Brandon Kassis (Parkland, Pa.) at 106 pounds, who pinned No. 19 Kurt McHenry (St. Paul's, Md.) in the semifinal; No. 12 Julian Chlebove (Northampton, Pa.) at 113, beating No. 7 Matthew Parker (Pennridge, Pa.) 1-0 in the final; Dan Moran (Northampton, Pa.) at 120; K.J. Fenstermacher (Bethlehem Liberty, Pa.) at 126; Dominick Mandarino (Don Bosco Prep, N.J.) at 152; No. 6 Kyle Bierdumpfel (Don Bosco Prep, N.J.) at 160; No. 13 John Jakobsen (Stroudsburg, Pa.) beating Lusane 3-0 in the final; and No. 20 Andrew Gunning (Bethlehem Liberty, Pa.) at 285. Quick Hits No. 1 Wyoming Seminary (Pa.) dominated their way to the title at the Eastern States Classic held at Sullivan Community College in New York, scoring 238.5 points from 11 placing wrestlers, including six within the top three. Leading the way were weight class titles won by eighth grader Beau Bartlett (113), No. 12 (at 195) Christian Dietrich (182), and No. 15 Will Hilliard (220). Tournament runners-up were Hilton (N.Y.) with 104 points led by weight class champions No. 1 Yianni Diakomihalis (138) and No. 9 Louie DePrez (170). No. 30 Southeast Polk used victories in eight weight classes to beat No. 32 West Des Moines Valley 35-23 in a showdown between the top two teams in the state of Iowa; each already had a dual meet victory over No. 34 Fort Dodge earlier in the season. It was a relatively disappointing week for No. 29 Platte County (Mo.) as they lost nine matches during a 37-26 dual meet defeat against No. 44 Park Hill (Mo.). Then over the next two days at the Basheor Bobcat Classic they finished a close third place; Goddard (Kans.) won with 221 points, Smithville (Mo.) was second with 206.5, while the Pirates scored 206. Making his meaningful season debut this past weekend was Kevin Vough (285), as he won the Bill Dies Memorial this weekend in Akron, Ohio. Vough won his first four matches by fall before beating returning state qualifier Arman Samouk (Copley, Ohio). Vough was joined by J.T. Brown (182) and No. 2 Ben Darmstadt (195) as weight class champions for No. 17 Elyria (Ohio) on their way to winning the tournament. The nation's No. 1 wrestler at 145 pounds, David Carr (Massillon Perry, Ohio) lost a tightly contested and somewhat controversial final at the Top Gun on Saturday night. Logan Lacure (Dayton Christian, Ohio) emerged with the 5-4 ultimate tiebreak victory in that battle of state champions; both having attended Dayton Christian last year, before Carr left when his father (Nate) took the head coaching job at Massillon Perry. -
PITTSBURGH -- No. 5 Oklahoma State wrestling shutout a top-25 team for the first time since 2008 as the Cowboys mauled the No. 18 Pittsburgh Panthers, 36-0, at the Fitzgerald Field House on Sunday afternoon. The Cowboys wrap up a successful weekend that saw them win 19 of 20 bouts. The win was the first for the Cowboys in Pittsburgh and their sixth of the season. "A shutout is always a good thing, meaning all 10 wrestlers competed hard," coach John Smith said. "We had several matches that produced a good first period for our guys. At times, we got scored on in the first period but we closed it out. It really felt like with each period we got stronger." The Panthers came out strong in four matches, opening scoring with takedowns, but the Cowboys finished even stronger to help the Pokes to a shutout. Fifth-ranked Eddie Klimara started the Cowboys off with a major decision victory of LJ Bentley at 125 pounds. The Cowboy scored nine points in the first period, surrendering none. In the second and third periods, he accumulated six more points for a 15-3 win. At 133 pounds, Gary Wayne Harding put on an exciting performance, defeating 16th-ranked Dom Forys. The Panther struck with three takedowns in the first period, but Harding evened the bout by the end of the period with two escapes, a reversal and nearfall points. Harding tallied another reversal and rode out Forys in the second period. He takedown in the third and riding time advantage pushed the match to sudden victory where Harding got the takedown and the 13-11 win. "The match was a hard fought battle," Harding said. "I knew I had to stay focused and grind out every position I could. It went to overtime and I had to find a way to win." Dean Heil picked up his fifth win of the season over a top-10 opponent as he defeated No. 5 Mike Racciato with a decisive 7-2 win at 141 pounds. Racciato put the first points on the board, but they were the only points Heil allowed for the remainder of the match as he put up seven unanswered points to earn his 17th win of the year. "Despite the dual being at Pitt, it was sort of a home dual for me," Heil said. "With so many supporters and especially my family being there it was my match to win. I started out slow, but after giving up that first take down I shut him down. Overall, it was a solid match. I picked him apart but still felt like I could've extended the score on him." Anthony Collica earned five takedowns in his match against Nick Zanetta at 149 pounds. Although Zanetta was the first to tally a takedown, Collica led 3-2 after the first period and earned three takedowns in the second period. In the final two minutes, he notched his fifth takedown and went on to win it, 13-5. No. 7 Joe Smith capped off his first weekend of varsity competition with two wins, including his 11-4 win over Ronnie Garbinsky on Sunday. Garbinsky picked up the opening takedown, but the bout was tied 3-3 after the first. Smith also picked up a reversal and nearfall points for the win. "It was a great experience winning my first two matches, but it also showed me what I need to work on to really compete at this level," Joe Smith said. "I now know the mat strategies that I have to have for a one-hour weigh-ins and what it takes to really prepare." At 165 pounds, Dieringer spent only 24 seconds on the mat as he pinned Cody Weircoich for his seventh fall of the season. Dieringer is now on a 66-match win streak, putting him at fourth all-time as he surpassed Alan Fried's 65-match streak. Kyle Crutchmer notched a major decision for the Pokes, defeating TeShaun Campbell, 12-2. Crutchmer picked up a flurry of points, including a first period takedown and a four-point nearfall in the second. He added two more takedowns and an escape in the third to pick up four more team points. Nolan Boyd topped Zach Bruce in a match that saw a lot of action from the two, but Boyd gave up only one point to the Panther. After a scoreless first period, Boyd earned a reversal and rode out Bruce for the remainder of the period. In the third period, Boyd was awarded a stalling point in the third to wrap up a 4-1 win. Six of the 10 points scored at 197 pounds were penalty points as Andrew Marsden made his debut in a bizarre match against Nick Bonacorsi. Marsden scored an escape and a riding time point to push the match into overtime, where the Cowboy got the takedown for his first career dual victory. No. 5 Austin Marsden finished off the dual with a solid win over No. 20 Ryan Solomon. Like his brother, the senior picked up a takedown, an escape and a riding time, giving him a 4-2 win. The Cowboys return to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. to take on No. 4 Missouri, who holds a 36-dual win streak. FAIRFIELD, Conn./WEST POINT, N.Y. -- A busy day of road duals for the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team resulted in a sweep, as the Quakers defeated Sacred Heart (31-6) and Army West Point (24-12) in their first road EIWA duals of the season. The Quakers won 15 of the 19 bouts contested in the dual meets, and never trailed in either. The overall takedown score in the two meets was 67-17 in favor of the Quakers, including a 39-7 advantage against Sacred Heart. Six different Quakers - May Bethea, Ray Bethea, C.J. Cobb, Patrik Garren, Caleb Richardson and Lorenzo Thomas - went 2-0 on the day. Against Army West Point, the biggest win for the Quakers was a controversial one. May Bethea defeated No. 14 Russell Parsons, 2-1, in sudden victory. Neither man scored a takedown in the match, but a second stalling warning on Parsons in overtime was the difference. Penn won both matches which reached overtime. Sophomore Marc Mastropietro knocked off Logan Everett, 8-5, in tiebreakers. After Mastropietro put together a good ride in the first period of the tiebreaker, Everett elected to go neutral and conceded an escape. Mastropietro quickly scored a takedown to seize control of the match. The Quakers suffered a tough loss at 174 when veteran Brian Harvey knocked off No. 15 Casey Kent, 10-7. Kent scored first, but a reversal and two quick back points in the first period gave Harvey the lead. In the second, Kent looked to get to work on top, but the official called for injury time after a Kent mat return. The only problem was that Harvey had never called for time. Off the ensuing restart, Harvey added a second reversal and then a takedown before the second period ended. In the third, Kent scored a takedown but ran out of time for the comeback. Caleb Richardson had six takedowns en route to a 14-5 major decision at 133, and No. 11 C.J. Cobb went one better with seven scores for a 16-5 major. No. 11 Lorenzo Thomas connected for five takedowns in a 13-5 major decision at 184 pounds. In the first dual of the day, the host Pioneers were thinking upset with the meet tied, 6-6, after four matches. The Quakers quickly halted those thoughts with wins in the final six matches - including five victories with bonus points. No. 11 C.J. Cobb and No. 15 Casey Kent each recorded technical falls to help the onslaught. Cobb connected on eight takedowns and added four points of nearfall en route to a 22-6 win at 149 pounds. For Kent, it was another dominant first period - he scored a takedown six seconds in and added two sets of four-point nearfall in the opening period. He would then add two takedowns and a final set of nearfall for an 18-2 win at 4:31. Ray Bethea finished on seven takedowns in a 16-5 major decision at 165 pounds, including four takedowns in the third period to blow open a 6-2 bout. More impressively, Bethea racked up 5:09 of riding time in the win. No. 11 Lorenzo Thomas controlled the first period in his match, scoring three takedowns and adding four points of nearfall for a 10-1 lead after the first frame. He would go on to win, 17-4. At 197, Joe Heyob bumped up from his usual spot at 184, and controlled the majority of the match for an 18-9 major decision. He finished five takedown in the match, and was close to the fall with a six-point move off a cradle in the second period, before tiring a bit in the final half minute. Other winners in the dual with Sacred Heart for Penn were Patrik Garren (285) and Caleb Richardson (133). Garren started the dual off with a 9-3 decision on the strength of a solid first period which featured two takedowns. Richardson only eked out a 7-6 decision after he was caught on a roll attempt in the second period for four points of nearfall. Otherwise, he was in control of the bout - he lead 6-1 after the first with two takedowns and two points of nearfall. Jeremy Schwartz went back and forth with Gerard Daly at 125, coming up on the wrong end of an 11-6 decision. The bout was 5-4, Daly, after two periods and a late flurry in the third was the difference. At 141, A.J. Vindici conceded a takedown in the first period, and that was the only scoring in his loss to Alex Harnsberger. Trailing 14-6 after six matches, Kent State (10-3, 3-1 MAC) came storming back for a 19-14 victory at Eastern Michigan Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center. Four of the Golden Flashes' six wins came down to the final seconds. "This was a nice team win for us," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "We knew coming up here wouldn't be easy." Senior Tyler Buckwalter (Mill Hall, Pa.) got the afternoon started with a 2-0 victory over Dakota Juarez. A first period takedown turned out to be the only scoring of the match. Buckwalter got in on a low single leg shot and after a brief scramble, used a Peterson to finish off the takedown just before time expired. "That was a big win for Tyler," Andrassy said of topping Juarez. "He just needs to be more consistent." Redshirt freshman Kyle Conel (Ashtabula, Ohio) earned his second win of the weekend over a Top 20 opponent with a 10-7 decision over Anthony Abro. Conel scored a pair of takedowns on blast double leg shots in the first to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Abro trimmed the lead to 8-7, before Conel scored a fourth takedown in the final seconds of the match. Senior Mack McGuire (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) gave the Flashes their only major decision with a 10-2 win over Blake Caudill to start the rally at 133. McGuire turned Caudill for a two-count and finished the first period with a 4-0 lead. A third period reversal and riding time clinched the team bonus point. Sophomore Anthony Tutolo (Concord, Ohio) came through with a big win for the second time in three days. In the third period, Tutolo countered a Kyle Springer attack and ended up behind him for a takedown in the final minute of the third period. Springer escaped late, but Tutolo hung on for the 3-2 decision. "Anthony's learning how to win at this level," Andrassy said. "Springer came out with a lot of energy in the first. But Anthony was the one who looked energetic in the third." Senior Mike DePalma (Jeannette, Pa.) continued the late heroics with a 10-7 comeback victory over Nick barber. DePalma trailed midway through the third period, before turning a double leg shot into a six-point move. Senior Ian Miller (Oak Harbor, Ohio) finished off the day with a convincing 9-2 victory over Mike Shaw. Miller tallied four takedowns and built up over four minutes of riding time. Although Eastern Michigan has made things interesting in the Flashes' last few trips to the Convocation Center, Kent State has not lost to the Eagles since 1974. Now 3-1 in MAC duals, Kent State returns to action Sunday, Jan. 23, hosting Old Dominion at 2 p.m., in what is expected to be another close conference battle. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The No. 9 University of Oklahoma wrestling team secured its second win of the weekend, defeating No. 24 West Virginia on Sunday afternoon inside WVU Coliseum. With the win, OU moves to 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Big 12. Seven Sooners recorded wins in the contest, including bonus-point victories at 133 pounds and 149 pounds. "I'm happy, particularly with the way our lighter weight guys are wrestling," OU head coach Mark Cody said. "They've gotten us off to great starts in both of these duals and really saved us against Bucknell because we were short handed. They're wrestling aggressive and they're winning the close matches, which is important. They're not giving up takedowns very easily, and we saw very few of them getting taken down today. I'm very, very happy to come out of this weekend with two wins." Sophomore Ryan Millhof, ranked No. 14, started out the contest at 125 pounds with a 2-1 decision over No. 12-ranked and 2015 national runner-up Zeke Moisey. GREELEY, Colo. -- North Dakota State University won five of the last six matches including three pins to defeat the University of Northern Colorado 29-13 in a Big 12 Conference match Sunday, Jan. 17, at Butler-Hancock Hall. North Dakota State (1-4, 1-0 Big 12) is scheduled to host Air Force (5-2, 0-1 Big 12) at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. Trailing 9-5 after four matches, North Dakota State 157-pound sophomore Kyle Gliva (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley H.S.) started the Bison blitz by recording an exhausting four-period sudden victory-2 overtime win over Joe Grable. Grable led 3-2 after the first period, but Gliva did the only scoring in the second with an escape. Grable gained an escape for a 4-3 lead early in the third period, but Gliva rallied with a takedown with 48-seconds left for a 5-4 advantage. Grable was able to escape with 24-seconds remaining to force overtime. The pair went scoreless through the first three OT sessions, but Gliva recorded a takedown with 23-seconds left in the second sudden victory period for the win and trim match deficit to 9-8. Gliva improved to 18-8 overall and 1-1 in duals. North Dakota State 165-pound sophomore Grant Nehring (Kimball, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo H.S.) wasted little time in putting the Bison ahead 14-9 in the dual. Nehring led 3-2 and turned over Keilan Torres for the pin at 55-seconds. Nehring now 3-6 overall and 2-2 in duals has gained all three wins by pin. NDSU 174-pound redshirt freshman Blake Thompson (Clovis, Calif./Utah Valley) trailed UNC's Tanner Davis 1-0 after two periods, but Thompson tied the score at 1-1 early in the third and recorded a takedown with 35-seconds remaing for a 3-1 decision. Thompson notched his first dual win in four tries and stands at 4-11 overall. Seventh-ranked 184-pound senior Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton H.S.) recorded his team-leading seventh pin of the season at 2:23 over Horacio Vialpando and widened the Bison lead to 23-9. Zillmer improved to 23-3 overall and 5-0 in duals this season. He extended his dual winning streak to 21 matches. Northern Colorado's 20th-ranked 197-pounder Trent Noon stopped the NDSU run with a 14-3 decision over Logan Paxton. However, NDSU 285-pound junior Ben Tynan (Kennewick, Wash./Highline College) ended things on a high note with a fall at 2:35 over Brian Macchione. Tynan trailed Macchione 4-3 early, but gained a reversal to set up the pin. Tynan improved to 15-8 overall and 4-1 in duals. North Dakota State's 16th-ranked 125-pounder Josh Rodriguez (Guadalupe, Calif./Righetti H.S.) opened the dual with a punishing 18-3 tech fall over Jesse Reed.
