PUEBLO, Colo. -- Joshua Ailey, Blake Dauphin and Jeromy Davenport earned bonus-point wins to spark streaking Central Oklahoma to a 34-6 drubbing of No. 19-ranked PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 4) – Joshua Ailey, Blake Dauphin and Jeromy Davenport earned bonus-point wins to spark streaking Central Oklahoma to a 34-6 drubbing of No. 19-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo here Thursday night. It was the sixth straight win for the Bronchos of 34th-year head coach David James, who improved to 11-5 on the season while staying perfect (18-0) against the Thunderwolves. Ailey picked up a first-period pin at 141 pounds, Davenport a second-period fall at 157 and Dauphin a major decision at 133 as UCO's big winners. The Bronchos also got regular decisions from 165 Danny Carrillo, 184 Brock Warren, 197 Jadon Davenport and Hvy Evan McGee, while 125 Zac D'Amico earned a forfeit. "I thought we wrestled pretty well overall," James said. "We got off to a good start with some early bonus wins and stayed on the offensive for the most part." The Bronchos jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead behind D'Amico's opening-match forfeit, Dauphin's 12-4 rout and Ailey's fall. Dauphin had four takedowns in recording his 20th win of the season and Ailey needed just 1:45 to notch his team-high 10th fall. Spencer Rutherford dropped a tough 8-6 decision at 149, but Jeromy Davenport got UCO back on the winning track with a pin at the 3:38 mark after building a 7-2 lead. Carrillo followed with his eighth straight win, using a trio of takedowns to avenge an early-season loss to Kyle Bateman with a 7-4 victory and the Bronchos were in control with a 25-3 cushion. Mason Thompson couldn't overcome an early 6-0 deficit and fell 11-7 at 174 before UCO finished the night with three straight wins. Warren had two takedowns and a reverse in a 7-2 win, Jadon Davenport used a third-period near-fall to secure a 6-0 shutout and McGee prevailed 2-1 after picking up a penalty point for stalling with just 10 seconds remaining. The Bronchos move on to Alamosa, Colo. Friday to wrap up the dual portion of their schedule with a 7 p.m. match against Adams State. No. 3 Huston Evans picked up his 13th pin of the season in the third period of the 184 lbs. bout and Mike Kennedy earned a pin in the second period of the 285 lbs. bout to close out the win. LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- The Edinboro University wrestling team made it 14 straight wins over Lock Haven and 17 consecutive Eastern Wrestling League duals with a 21-13 win over the Bald Eagles at Thomas Fieldhouse on Thursday night. The win boosted the Fighting Scots to 8-6 as they wrapped up their third straight undefeated EWL season at 6-0. Lock Haven fell to 7-9 and 2-3, respectively. The victory was fueled by a dominating performance by Billy Miller at heavyweight. With Edinboro holding a 16-13 lead, the redshirt freshman clinched the win with a technical fall. Fellow redshirt freshman Sean Russell also picked up bonus points with a major decision at 125 lbs. Russell got the night underway with a 20-9 major decision over Jake Field (13-14). He improved to 22-5 with the win. Anthony Rivera (7-9) followed with a 6-4 win in sudden victory over Lewis Williams at 133 lbs., giving Edinboro a 7-0 lead. The Bald Eagles would close to 7-6 with decisions at 141 and 149 lbs. Cody Wheeler (5-7) posted a 5-3 decision over freshman Tyler Vath at 141 lbs., as Vath's late attempt at a tying takedown was unsuccessful. He fell to 7-12. The 149 lbs. match featured nationally-ranked freshman Patricio Lugo against Dan Neff, an All-American a year ago. Lugo was looking for his third win over an All-American this year, but Neff would record a first period takedown and went on for a 7-3 decision. Lugo, ranked 14th by InterMat, fell to 24-4 while Neff is now 21-8 and has won 14 straight matches. Austin Matthews rebounded from his first defeat as a Fighting Scot in his last match for an impressive 6-1 win over Aaron McKinney at 157 lbs. McKinney (23-13) won the PSAC championship earlier this year, with Matthews still recovering from knee surgery. Matthews, now 2-1 and ranked 15th, would score all the points he needed in the first period with a takedown and four near-fall points. Redshirt senior Casey Fuller boosted the Fighting Scots' lead to 13-6 with a 3-0 decision at 165 lbs. over Cody Cordes (13-14), as he improved to 22-5. Ty Schoffstall (7-3), filling in for starter Patrick Jennings at 174 lbs., dropped a 15-6 major decision to Tyler Wood (16-14). Like Matthews, Vic Avery returned recently from knee surgery and continues to round into form. The redshirt senior, ranked second at 184 lbs., improved to 3-0 with an impressive 11-6 win ov er Tristan Sponseller, who is now 20-6. A pair of familiar foes in Vince Pickett and Phil Sprenkle hooked up at 197 lbs. Scoreless heading into the third period, Pickett turned in an impressive ride on Sprenkle, but the Bald Eagle would register a reversal with 20 seconds remaining for a 2-1 decision. Pickett fell to 17-12 while Sprenkle is 13-6. That left Miller needing a win to clinch the match. He was more than up to the task, recording an early takedown and dominating his heavyweight bout with Adam Mackie (10-10) with a 15-0 (7:00) technical fall. Miller is now 23-7. Edinboro doesn't have much time to celebrate the victory. The Fighting Scots will take part in the Edinboro Open on Saturday, February 6, with several starters slated to compete, followed by a home dual with tenth-ranked Virginia Tech on Sunday, February 7. The match gets underway at 1 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. Results: 125 -- Sean Russell (EU) maj. dec. Jake Field (LHU) 20-9 133 -- Anthony Rivera (EU) dec. Morgan McIntosh is one of four No. 1-ranked wrestlers for Penn State (Photo/Tony Rotundo, WrestlersAreWarriors.com)On Friday, live on the Big Ten Network at 6 p.m. ET, the last two teams to win an NCAA championship face off in a dual meet. Penn State comes into the match undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the dual meet rankings. Ohio State is currently 9-2 and ranked No. 7. The following is a weight-by-weight preview of the dual meet. The lineups are a prediction of each team's best squad. The predicted outcomes are based on a proprietary statistical model developed by StrikeScoreMMA.com called Wrestler's Pythagorean Expectation (WPE). The model has been previously used to predict the finals of the Midlands Championships and the Oklahoma State vs. Missouri dual meet. In those two instances, the model correctly predicted the winner in 89 percent of matches. The WPE for each competitor is list below in parentheses. 125: No. 1 Nathan Tomasello, Ohio State (93.47) vs. No. 4 Nico Megaludis, Penn State (90.33) As the returning national champion, Tomasello should be the favorite here. However, in the past he has struggled in his initial encounters with top-ranked wrestlers. For example, last year, he fell against Thomas Gilman (Iowa) before returning to score the victory later in the year. Tomasello and Megaludis have not met in college, so this should be a tough one. Prediction: Tomasello (Ohio State) dec. Megaludis (Penn State) 133: No. 10 Johnni DiJulius, Ohio State (68.68) vs. No. 5 Jordan Conaway, Penn State (85.97) Conaway has only lost twice this season. He fell against No. 2 Zane Richards in a dual and No. 1 Nahshon Garrett in the finals of the Southern Scuffle. DiJulius has managed to hold onto his ranking spot, but he has had a disappointing season up to this point. He has gone 9-4 in duals and the CKLV tournament. Conaway should take this one. Prediction: Conaway (Penn State) dec. DiJulius (Ohio State) 141: No. 4 Micah Jordan, Ohio State (87.08) vs. No. 14 Jimmy Gulibon, Penn State (72.35) After being ranked No. 2 in early November, Gulibon has fallen all the way to No. 14. On the other hand, Jordan has had a great redshirt freshman campaign. His only defeat was a one-point loss against No. 8 Matt Manley (Missouri). He has picked up victories over veterans such as No. 9 Todd Preston (Harvard) and No. 19 Anthony Abidin (Nebraska). Prediction: Jordan (Ohio State) dec. Gulibon (Penn State) 149: Cody Burcher, Ohio State (58.06) vs. No. 1 Zain Retherford, Penn State (98.89) Stieber has not really looked like himself since coming back from twin Tommy John surgeries. So far, he has only wrestled in three duals and posted a 1-2 record. For these reasons, Ohio State is expected to go with Cody Burcher here. Burcher has been the starter for most of the season. In duals the CKLV tournament he has struggled to a 3-6 record. It has been feast of famine, as all three of his wins during that stretch have come via fall. Retherford has been on the other end of spectrum. He is undefeated and annihilated respected opposition like Jason Tsirtsis (Northwestern) and Alec Pantaleo (Michigan). This should be as close to a lock for Penn State as it gets. Prediction: Retherford (Penn State) maj. dec. Burcher (Ohio State) 157: No. 11 Jake Ryan, Ohio State (64.00) vs. No. 1 Jason Nolf, Penn State (95.87) So far this season, nobody has been able to come close to stopping Nolf. That should not change here. He is 24-0 with 11 falls and 8 technical falls. It will be a struggle for Ryan to not give up bonus. Prediction: Nolf (Penn State) tech. fall Ryan (Ohio State) 165: No. 2 Bo Jordan, Ohio State (98.25) vs. No. 17 Shakur Rasheed, Penn State (87.92) Going into the season, a lot of people saw 165 as a potential hole in the Penn State lineup. In a lot of ways, Rasheed has been a bit of a bright spot. However, Jordan is still the clear favorite here. After beginning the year at 174, he has adjusted to the new weight and returned to dominance. Prediction: Jordan (Ohio State) maj. dec. Rasheed (Penn State) 174: No. 14 Myles Martin, Ohio State (77.99) vs. No. 1 Bo Nickal, Penn State (95.24) Since coming off his redshirt, Martin has gone 4-2 and outscored his opponents 64-34. Last week, he defeated No. 11 Nate Jackson (Indiana) who is the only wrestler to defeat Nickal this year. With all that being said, Martin is still adjusting to competing at the Division I level. Nickal should be in the driver's seat for this one. Prediction: Nickal (Penn State) maj. dec. Martin (Ohio State) 184: No. 13 Kenny Courts, Ohio State (74.03) vs. No. 9 Matt McCutcheon, Ohio State (95.01) After suffering a knee injury against Illinois, McCutcheon was listed as questionable by coach Cael Sanderson for last weekend's match against Michigan. McCutcheon did not wrestle. Without the injury factor, McCutcheon would be a pretty clear favorite. However, he could be slowed by the knee or even replaced as a backup. If this dual turns out to be this close, this could be a wildcard match. Prediction: McCutcheon (Penn State) dec. Courts (Ohio State) 197: Mark Martin, Ohio State (37.86) vs. No. 1 Morgan McIntosh, Penn State (97.84) It has been a tough year for Martin. He is only 4-4 in duals and the CKLV tournament. He has been outscored 32 to 41 in those matches. On the other hand, McIntosh is undefeated with 17 bonus point victories. Prediction: McIntosh (Penn State) maj. dec. Martin (Ohio State) 285: No. 2 Kyle Snyder (95.08*) vs. Jan Johnson (10.00) This should be a virtual lock for the Buckeyes. Everyone knows that Snyder is a reigning world champion. He recently took third at the respected Ivan Yarygin International. He has had only one collegiate match this season, but he seems to be in top form. Johnson has struggled this season to say the least. He comes into this out with the lowest WPE of any starter. Prediction: Snyder (Ohio State) pins Johnson (Penn State) *Snyder's WPE is based on his performance at the Ivan Yarygin International. Predicted Dual Meet Score: Penn State 23, Ohio State 16 Richard Mann currently runs the data-driven MMA blog StrikeScoreMMA.com.

The eight Big Ten host schools include current No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Iowa, No. 8 Michigan, No. 9 Ohio State, No. 11 Nebraska, No. 12 Rutgers, No. 22 Indiana and No. 23 Minnesota. "I've been thrilled with the extraordinary level of support this event has received from all participating coaches and administrations," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "Like any new concept, we've experienced some unanticipated challenges but the coaches and school administrators have been great at helping us navigate through these situations." The host Big Ten coaches were pleased with their selection for the new format of the national duals, which will feature the highest ranking Big Ten teams hosting the highest ranked dual meet champions from the seven other Division I wrestling conferences, along with one non-Big Ten at-large team to round out the field. As the month of February begins, the competition in some aspects tapers down, while in others it gets fiercer. State series events are starting to begin in many states, in some others the dual meet playoffs are progress, and yet additional states are closing out their regular seasons. District dual meet playoffs in the Keystone State This week features each district in Pennsylvania determining its dual meet champion and place-winning teams. For Class AAA, the big-school division, eleven teams will automatically qualify to the state tournament (ten district champions, District V does not have big-school wrestling, while District VIII does not directly qualify). Ten teams will be in preliminary matches on Monday night for the right to make the trip to Hershey: second through fourth place finishers in District I (Philadelphia area), second through fourth placers in District III (South Central), third place in District VII (Pittsburgh area), champion of District VIII (Pittsburgh City), runner-up in District XI (Lehigh Valley), runner-up in District XII (Philadelphia City/Catholic). District I features two nationally ranked teams, No. 20 Boyertown and No. 46 Council Rock South. It is most likely to be those two teams in the final, though Council Rock South will have to clear Pennridge in the semifinal, with either West Chester Rustin or Upper Darby as the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs. District III is likely a two horse race between Central Dauphin and Cumberland Valley with Cedar Cliff and Exeter Township seeded to also advance to the state preliminary round on Monday night. District VII features a pair of nationally ranked teams, No. 10 Belle Vernon Area and No. 32 Kiski Area. They have advanced to face North Allegheny and Canon-McMillan respectively in the semifinal round. It is likely to be a North Allegheny vs. Canon-McMillan battle for the third spot, which is de facto qualification to Hershey. District XI is likely to be a rematch between No. 6 Bethlehem Catholic and No. 21 Nazareth in the final, Bethlehem Catholic won eleven bouts this past Saturday in a 40-9 victory; not sure why this Saturday will be any different. Nazareth is looking at a match against the fourth place team from District III on Monday night. Breaking down the likely state draw by quarter: Q1 -- District III champ against District VII third in the opening round with the winner looking at No. 21 Nazareth in the quarterfinal Q2 -- District VII runner-up against District I champion in a likely quarterfinal, that could be a battle of nationally ranked teams Q3 -- No. 6 Bethlehem Catholic is looking at a likely quarterfinal against the District III runner-up Q4 -- The most likely quarterfinal places the District VII champion against the District I champion, which could be a battle of nationally ranked teams There are no nationally ranked teams in Class AA (small-school) this year. The two best teams it seems are likely going to meet in the semifinal, as the District X champ and the District IX champ are in the same half-bracket (i.e. Reynolds and Brookville). Catching up on three showcase duals from last week On January 28, one week ago, No. 5 Buchanan traveled to neighbor and arch-rival No. 9 Clovis. The Bears ended the 91 match in-state dual meet victory streak of Clovis with a 32-27 win. Buchanan won eight weight classes, and held the lead for the duration of the dual meet starting with the third match. Justin Mejia, ranked No. 3 at 120, returned to the mat in style with an opening match pin for Clovis; he had injury defaulted out of the Doc Buchanan in early January. However, it would not surprise me if Clovis won their sixth straight state title, as they are favored to win four weight classes at the individual bracket tournament in early March. Saturday night, January 30, saw No. 6 Bethlehem Catholic blow out No. 21 Nazareth 40-9, as the Hawks won eleven of the fourteen weight classes to win the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship. As covered above, the two teams are likely to meet on Saturday for a District XI title. Then on Sunday, No. 2 Wyoming Seminary (Pa.) needed every one of their eight wins, as they outlasted No. 4 Bergen Catholic (N.J.) 25-22. It came down to the last bout of the dual meet when Justin Hoyle beat Richie Halal 6-1 in a winner take all bout, it was tied 22-2 headed into 106. The two key bouts in my opinion happened to open the dual meet as Wyoming Seminary won a pair of tossups at 113 and 120, Benny Baker beat Carmen Ferrante 5-3 in overtime, and Jack Davis beat previously nationally ranked Gerard Angelo 6-5. Big match not happening Last week this time there was talk about a potential dual meet between No. 2 Wyoming Seminary and No. 3 St. Paris Graham (Ohio) happening next weekend. There was a preliminary agreement, at least that's the terminology I was given, between the two teams to meet on February 13 at St. Paris Graham; however, things fell through earlier this week. State titles on the line this weekend Dual meet state championships take place in North Carolina and Tennessee.

Super Bowl 50 is more than the NFL championship game between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers. It's one of the greatest shows on earth -- a spectacle that goes beyond football that draws in viewers who might not care much about the action on the gridiron as much as the halftime entertainment extravaganza and much-anticipated commercials custom-made to provide water-cooler chitchat material for days afterward. No wonder a number of past Super Bowls still rank among the most-watched events in TV history. Here's a Super Bowl 50 fun fact to spring on your co-workers: some of the players taking the field at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7 once wrestled for real. Don't believe it? Last year at Super Bowl XLIX, at least three players -- Josh Kline of the New England Patriots, and R.J. Sweezy and Justin Britt of the Seattle Seahawks -- were state high school heavyweight wrestling champs before finding fame and fortune in the NFL. If that weren't impressive enough, at least two NCAA heavyweight champs -- Curley Culp, 1967 champ for Arizona State, and two-time titlewinner Stephen Neal for Cal State Bakersfield (1998, 1999) -- each had the honor of playing in past Super Bowls ... Culp for Kansas City, Neal for New England. InterMat thought it would be fun to tell about some potential Super Bowl 50 stars who once competed in the oldest and greatest sport in high school. We were able to find three former wrestlers on the roster of the Denver Broncos. (Sorry, we weren't able to find any ex-matmen for the Carolina Panthers. Did we miss someone? If so, send an email to Mark@InterMatWrestle.com with the name of the wrestler-turned-NFL player, his NFL team, and basic info about his amateur wrestling career.) Shaquil Barrett, Denver Broncos Born in Baltimore in November 1992, Shaquil Akeem Barrett was considered so inseparable from his brother Kevin as a kid, some thought they were twins. (Shaquil is two years younger.) So when Kevin – who was having trouble in high school in Baltimore – transferred to Boys Town High School, a boarding school outside Omaha, Shaquil followed a year later. Despite attending two different high schools and two colleges, Shaquil Barrett's success helped him land in the NFL as an offensive linebacker for the Denver Broncos. Football accomplishments: Shaquil Barrett started is football career in Baltimore, playing at City High School. However, when his elder brother Kevin headed west to Boys Town in Nebraska, Shaquil followed one year later, playing football and wrestling for the Cowboys. As a senior, Barrett played in the Nebraska Shrine Bowl and was named defensive MVP of the game. He was not highly recruited by colleges, so Barrett was a walk-on at nearby University of Nebraska-Omaha. Barrett quickly earned a scholarship, won the starting job at middle linebacker in 2010 and posted some impressive stats: 82 tackles, including 11½ for loss, 8½ sacks, three forced fumbles and four blocked kicks. But then UNO dropped football in 2011, so Barrett was left scrambling for a new college home. Shaquil Barrett headed west again, and found that home at Colorado State University. Among Barrett's accomplishments while at the Fort Collins, Colo. school for three seasons: 246 tackles, 18 sacks, voted Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, earned 2013 New Mexico Bowl Defensive MVP honors and was invited to play in the East-West Shrine Game following that season. In May 2014, Barrett signed with the Denver Broncos as a rookie free agent. Wrestling accomplishments: As a senior at Boys Town High School, Shaquil Barrett won the Nebraska Class B 215-pound state wrestling championship in 2010, improving on a fifth-place finish at state the year before. Barrett's senior-year title helped propel the Cowboys to a second-place finish in the team standings at the state tournament. Besides success on the mat and on the football field, Barrett was also impressive in the classroom, being named to the school's National Honor Society. NFL tale of the tape: 6'2â€, 250 pounds, 23 years old James Ferentz, Denver Broncos Imagine completing your first season as a starter for a team that makes it to the Super Bowl. That's the story for James Ferentz. Then again, it's an even better story for the young athlete for who football is something of the family business. After all, James Ferentz's father Kirk Ferentz is long-time head football coach at the University of Iowa. Born in June 1989, James grew up in Iowa City, home of the Hawkeyes, playing football and wrestling at City High School ... then chose to stay close to home to continue his gridiron career -- and education -- at Iowa. Football accomplishments: James Ferentz plays center for the Denver Broncos, signing with the team in September 2015. Prior to that, he signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in April 2014. James Ferenz, the son of Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz, was a state runner-up in wrestlingPrior to entering the NFL, James Ferentz started in 38 consecutive games over three seasons for the Iowa Hawkeyes. In addition, he earned a number of honors on the gridiron at Iowa. As a senior, Ferentz was selected to compete at the East-West Shrine Game, and was named to the second-team All-Big Ten team. He also earned some significant school awards, including the Roy J. Carver Most Valuable Player (offense), the Hayden Fry "Extra Heartbeat" Award (offense), Players Choice Award (offense), Iron Hawk Award, and Permanent Team Captain honors (offense). Before playing at Kinnick Stadium on the University of Iowa campus, James Ferentz made a name for himself on the football field across town at City High School in Iowa City. Among his gridiron honors for the Little Hawks: first team all-state as a junior and senior, first team all-conference as a junior and senior, and team captain. Wrestling accomplishments: K.J. Pilcher, wrestling writer for the Cedar Rapids Gazette described Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz as being "a big proponent of wrestling." James Ferentz must have bought into the idea that wrestling contributes to success in football, having earned four letters in wrestling at City High. The younger Ferentz served as wrestling team captain for the Little Hawks as a senior, losing just two matches that year ... both to the eventual state champ. In fact, James Ferentz made it to the heavyweight finals of the 2009 Iowa state wrestling championships, placing second in one of the toughest tournaments in the nation. NFL tale of the tape: 6'2", 285 pounds, 26 years old Ryan Harris, Denver Broncos For Ryan Harris, the third time's the charm regarding his current NFL home, as this is his third stint with the Broncos. Denver selected Harris in the third round (No. 70 overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft, where he played for four seasons with the Broncos. The tackle then went to Philadelphia, back to Denver, to Houston and to Kansas City before returning to the Mile High City in May 2015. He returned to Denver for a third time in May 2015, where he has played every game this season. Ryan Emerson Wilcox Harris is very much a product of middle America. Born in Minneapolis in March 1985, Harris attended a private school in the Twin Cities (where he was a two-sport athlete), then University of Notre Dame. Ryan Harris of the Denver Broncos wrestled at Cretin-Derham Hall in Minnesota prior to attending college at Notre DameFootball accomplishments: Harris was brought back to Denver last year when left tackle Ryan Clady tore an anterior cruciate ligament in May and was lost for the 2015 season. Familiarity with the Broncos' way of doing things -- and a reputation for professionalism -- were factors for the Broncos signing the veteran to a one-year deal. "We had some issues when we got to (spring drills), when we lost Ryan Clady, so we had some things that went on. But it was possible to sign a veteran who has played with you before," Broncos coach Gary Kubiak told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "I think Ryan's come in and done a good job, and I think he continues to get better. (When) you get caught in some of those situations like that and you're able to sign veteran players that have a lot of snaps under their belt, we're very fortunate." Harris is happy to be back in Denver, saying, "I'm having some of the most fun I've ever had playing football, and to be playing with the guys I'm playing with, I feel like I'm extremely lucky and I'm just loving playing for the Broncos now." Before entering the pro ranks, Harris played football for Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, Minn., where he was a USA Today first-team All-American as a senior, and played in the U.S. Army All-American Game in San Antonio. He then headed east to Indiana, to Notre Dame. A four-year starter for the Fighting Irish, Harris tallied 45 consecutive career games. Among his honors: selected Notre Dame's top offensive lineman (Westwood One/Guardian Life Insurance Guardian of the Year Award) as a senior and sophomore. Wrestling accomplishments: Harris earned two varsity letters and was an all-conference selection in wrestling at Cretin-Derham Hall. NFL tale of the tape: 6'5", 305 pounds, 30 years old Evan Mathis, Denver Broncos Despite an NFL career that has taken him all over the nation, Broncos defensive guard Evan Bradley Mathis is very much a product of Alabama. Born in Birmingham in November 1981, Mathis was a three-sport star in high school in suburban Birmingham, then headed down I-20 to the University of Alabama to continue his education ... and his gridiron career. As a high school wrestler, Evan Mathis captured the 2000 Alabama 6A heavyweight state championshipFootball accomplishments: Thirty-four-year-old Mathis is in his first season with the Broncos. Prior to coming to Denver, Mathis was a Panther, a Dolphin, a Bengal and an Eagle during the course of his eleven-season NFL career. He was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the third round (79th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft. Mathis then headed south, where he played for the Miami Dolphins in 2008, then the Cincinnati Bengals (2008-10), then the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011-14. He signed a one-year contract with the Broncos in August 2015. While in Philadelphia, Mathis was selected for the NFL Pro Bowl in 2013 and 2014, and was an Associated Press first-team All-Pro choice in 2013. Mathis started at left guard in each of his last 56 games played with Philadelphia. His 5.5 sacks allowed since 2011 are the fewest among starting NFL guards during that span (minimum 50 starts). Before going pro, Mathis had a successful career with the Crimson Tide of Alabama. In his first three years at Tuscaloosa, Mathis played tackle; he shifted to left guard as a senior. He started 47 consecutive games. Wrestling accomplishments: There are news stories where Mathis has indicated he would enjoy participating in the WWE someday. That said, Mathis wrestled for real at Homewood High School outside of Birmingham, where he captured the 2000 Alabama 6A heavyweight state championship. In high school, Mathis was a triple-threat athlete; in addition to wrestling and football, he competed in the shot put event. NFL tale of the tape: 6'5". 201 pounds, 34 years old Derek Wolfe, Denver Broncos Born in February 1990 in Negley, Ohio, Derek Wolfe overcame an abusive childhood at the hands of his mother by being taken in by a nearby family, the Hoppels, who made names for themselves in football and wrestling in eastern Ohio. It was his success in football in high school that had college recruiters calling, but he followed an older adopted brother to the University of Cincinnati, where he attracted the attention of NFL scouts. The Broncos liked what they saw, and Wolfe was selected in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft, becoming the 36th pick overall. Wolfe is now in his fourth season in Denver as a defensive end. Football accomplishments: Derek Wolfe was a standout football player at Lisbon-Beaver Local High School in East Liverpool, Ohio. He became the school's first athlete ever to be drafted by the NFL. For college, Wolfe stayed in the state of Ohio, attending the University of Cincinnati in the southwest corner of the state, where he joined Adam Hoppel on the Bearcat football team. In four seasons at UC (2008-12), Wolfe tallied 162 total tackles, 37 tackles for a loss, and 19.5 sacks. As a junior, Wolfe was a member of UC's Liberty Bowl championship team; the following year, he named Co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. Wolfe was drafted in 2012. In his four seasons with the Broncos, he has played 55 games, scoring a total of 140 tackles, and 17 sacks. ERIE, Pa. -- It was another rivalry match that went down to the wire, with Mercyhurst grinding out the 24-18 victory over Gannon. The Lakers improved to 10-3 on the year while Gannon dropped to 3-4 overall. Willie Bohince put the Lakers on the board quickly, pinning Casey Vollmer in the opening period at 1:22. Kevin Kinyua then followed with a tough 6-5 decision over Aaron Smith, pushing the Lakers lead to 9-0. However, Gannon's regionally-ranked wrestler John Marotto (No. 5) held off Joey Miller at 141 by a score of 4-3 to put the Golden Knights on the board, and George McGuire evened the team score with a pin against Joel Bowers (3:57). In the first matchup of two regionally ranked wrestlers, No. 4 Nate Ross narrowly escaped the last second efforts of No. 1 Francis Mizia to tie the match in the final seconds, holding on for a 5-4 win. In the following matchup, the region's top-ranked 174 pounder (No. 3 nationally) wasted little time avenging the Lakers loss in the previous bout, needing only 19 seconds to pin Jake Stratton and bring Mercyhurst even in the team scoring, 15-15. LEXINGTON, Va. -- Hoping to send four senior Keydets off with a win, the VMI wrestling team earned a 37-0 shutout victory over Southern Conference foe Davidson College Wednesday night at Cormack Hall. Competing in their final home dual, seniors Emmitt Kelly, Mark Darr, Derek Thurman and Urayoan Garcia earned individual victories to lead the team to the shutout, its first such victory since blanking Davidson, coincidentally, by a 36-0 score during the 2012-13 campaign. It was also the largest margin of victory since defeating Campbell last year by a 45-8 score. "I am truly going to miss our seniors," said VMI head coach Chris Skretkowicz. "They have worked so hard for our program. Tonight was a great way to send them off." Junior Dalton Henderson won his 10th consecutive bout by earning an 11-3 major decision over Camden Bertucci at 125 pounds for a quick 4-0 VMI lead. Coming off a third-place finish at All-Academy, freshman 133-pounder Dominick Gallo won his fourth straight match by topping Dustin Runzo by a 4-1 decision to lift the lead to 7-0. At 133 pounds, Hunter Starner earned his third pin of the year by defeating Davidson's Billy McClelland in the second period (4:12) to balloon the VMI advantage to 13-0 after three bouts. Kelly earned a 5-0 decision at 149 pounds to go out with an individual win in his senior home finale before freshman Neal Richards registered a 10-4 decision over Davidson's Tony Palumbo. After a Shabaka Johns pin at 165 pounds and Mark Darr decision victory provided the Keydets a 28-0 advantage, senior Derek Thurman earned a hard-fought 4-3 decision over Davidson's Konner Pritchard. Down 7-5 near the end of his bout, 197-pounder Taylor Thomas earned a takedown in the final seconds to force overtime, where he earned a takedown and four-point near fall en route to a 13-7 sudden victory decision. At heavyweight, senior Urayoan Garcia gutted out a 3-2 tiebreaker decision to preserve the shutout. VMI returns to action this Sunday on the road with a SoCon dual at SIU-Edwardsville. ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Despite being without three starters in the lineup due to injury, the Navy wrestling team earned a 26-18 victory over George Mason Wednesday evening at Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis. The Mids, who improved to 9-1 on the year, earned victories in six of the 10 bouts, including bonus points in three matches. "I felt like the team responded well to a short week of preparation and Corey Wilding really set the tone for the evening in the very first match with a consistent line to line, whistle to whistle effort," said Navy head coach Joel Sharratt. "We had the opportunity to see some non-traditional favorites in the lineup due to injuries and the guys need to understand why you have to prepare every day like you're the man in the arena. You might just be called upon to step up sooner than you think. "It's one match at a time, but tonight was a good team victory against a much stronger George Mason team than we saw 12 months ago." Navy jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after sophomore Corey Wilding (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up an 11-4 win against George Mason's Blake Roulo at 149 pounds. Wilding appeared to have the major decision, but Roulo managed to break free with 38 seconds left in the match to cut into Wilding's lead and salvage a three-point loss instead of four. George Mason, however, took its first and only lead in the match when redshirt senior Greg Flournoy took advantage of the Mids' youth at 157 pounds. Rookie Jonathan Carrera (Milton, Mass.) made just his second career dual appearance when he stepped to the mat against Flournoy who entered the match with a 22-6 record this season, including a 10-3 dual mark. Flournoy dominated the match and picked up a 9-0 major decision to give the Patriots a 4-3 advantage. The Mids battled back to not only win the next four matches, but gave the team a commanding 23-4 lead by outscoring George Mason 20-0. First up on the docket was sophomore 165-pound Michael Coleman (Hudson, Ohio) who got the start after team captain John Keck (Wading River, N.Y.) was unable to go because of an injury sustained at the All-Academy Championship last weekend. Coleman earned the escape in the second period before securing the win in the third with a takedown and tacking on riding time for a 4-0 win against redshirt junior Pat Davis. The trio of 19th-ranked sophomore Jadaen Bernstein (Glen Gardner, N.J.), 15th-ranked senior Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.) and senior Michael Woulfe (Oak Park, Ill.) has been nothing short of sensational this season, especially in dual action. The three are a combined 18-1 in dual matches and have outscored their opponents a whopping 86-3 in those bouts. Wednesday night's match would not disappoint as the three combined for 17 points. "Bernstein, Miller and Woulfe continue to set a great example of finding ways to score big team points and they are so exciting for our fans and impose their will against our opponents," added Sharratt. After a rather inactive first period that saw Bernstein take a 3-2 lead over GMU's Daniel Mika at 174 pounds, the 2015 NCAA qualifier built a 14-4 lead through two periods and earned the tech fall (25-9) with 41 seconds remaining in the match. Bernstein recorded nine takedowns and a two-point near fall en route to capturing his 28th victory of the season and mainting his flawless dual record at 7-0. Miller, meanwhile, stepped up to the mat and for the third consecutive match, he pinned his foe in the opening period. Ranked No. 3 in the country in wins by fall (vs. DI opponents), Miller earned his 14th win this season by pinning George Mason redshirt freshman Austin Harrison just over a minute into the match (1:08). Not to be outdone, 197-pound Woulfe built a 12-3 lead and scored a pair of 4-point near falls before he picked up his 16th win this season by fall, the nation's best mark. Woulfe earned the pin against Patriots freshman Cameron Houston in 2:39. George Mason answered with a fall of its own at heavyweight with redshirt freshman Matt Voss pinning Navy sophomore Nick Mabry (New Braunfels, Texas) with just over two minutes to go in the match (4:52). The Patriots got to within nine points when redshirt sophomore Ibrahim Bunduka picked up his 16th win of the season in a 13-4 major decision over Navy sophomore 125-pound Brant Leadbeter (Owings, Md.). Navy pushed its lead to 12 behind sophomore 133-pound Zack Davis' (Granger, Ind.) effort. Davis broke a 4-4 tie with an escape to start the third and was awarded a two-point near fall to push his lead to three. He gained nearly two minutes of riding time in the final period to earn the bonus point for the 8-4 victory and secure the team victory for the Midshipmen. "Davis earned the match of the night. After getting off to a bit of a slow start, he battled for every point after the first flurry and ultimately established his pace." The Patriots won the final bout of the night at 141 pounds with redshirt senior Vince Rodriguez posting a 14-5 major decision over Navy backup 141-pound sophomore John Kenyon (Lewiston, Idaho), who made his dual debut. Kenyon wrestled in place of an ailing Nicholas Gil (Crystal Lake, Ill.) who has had a solid rookie season with a 21-10 mark. The Mids will have little time to relish the victory as they will be back on the mat Friday evening when they travel to Norfolk, Va. to face a talented Old Dominion squad. Action is slated for 7:30 pm at the Ted Constant Convocation Center and will be streamed live via Old Dominion's web site, odusports.com (paid subscription). DURHAM, N.C. -- Boyce Cornwell's hard-fought, 2-1 decision, in the night's final individual bout lifted Gardner-Webb to a 19-18 win over No. 24 Duke Wednesday. It marked the second win over a top-25 team in as many weeks for Gardner-Webb (6-5) and the third win in a row overall for Daniel Elliott's Runnin' Bulldogs. Duke is ranked 24th in this week's InterMat team rankings. Cortez Starkes (125) and Tyler Ziegler (133) pushed Gardner-Webb to an early 7-0 lead after two bouts, with Starkes slipping past Thayer Atkins by a 5-3 decision and Ziegler handling Brandon Leynaud in a 13-4 major decision. Zach Finesilver rallied the Blue Devils quickly, however, recording a pin fall over Ryan Hull at 141 pounds to trim the lead to 7-6 - and No. 10 Mitch Finesilver followed with a decision over talented 149-pounder Chris Vassar for a 9-7 Duke edge on the team scoreboard. Ryan Mosley continued to wrestle well at 157 pounds - up a weight class from his NCAA qualifying level of 2015 - nipping Connor Bass by a 4-2 margin to seize the lead for the 'Dogs. Jake Faust outlasted Austin Trott by a 5-2 decision at 165 pounds in a seemingly pivotal result - but Brett Stein wrestled himself to a 10-4 win at 174 pounds and Hunter Gamble followed with a key decision at 184 pounds to push Gardner-Webb in front 16-12 with two bouts remaining. The nation's 5th-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds - Duke's Conner Hartmann - improved his record to 19-1 overall with a pin of TJ Henderson in 2:00, putting the Blue Devils on top once again (18-16) and leaving the match in the hands of heavyweights Cornwell (GWU) and Brendan Walsh (Duke). Cornwell and Walsh battled in a low-scoring tussle through the first six minutes, with Cornwell scoring the winning points on a two-point reversal with just over 30 seconds left on the third period clock - giving Gardner-Webb an emotional victory. It marked another milestone win for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who picked up their first win over Duke since the 1998 season. Gardner-Webb will return home to resume Southern Conference action Friday night, hosting The Citadel at 6:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena. The match will air live on The Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com), with Alex and Andy Bennett calling the action. Results: 125 - Cortez Starkes (GWU) dec. Four PSU wrestlers in 'Most Dominant Wrestler' standings
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA has released the third week of standings for the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Awards that will be awarded in March at the respective Division I, II and III Wrestling Championships. The inaugural NCAA Wrestling Awards were presented at the 2012 wrestling championships. The three awards, given in each division, honor the Most Dominant Wrestler as well as the student-athletes that have accumulated the most falls and the most technical falls throughout the course of the regular and postseasons. For falls and tech falls to be counted towards a student-athletes total they must come against opponents in the same division. Ties in the two categories are broken based on the aggregate time. This week marks the first reveal of where the Most Dominant Wrestler race stands with a minimum of 14 matches in the division required to be ranked. In Division I, four Penn State wrestlers are ranked in the top 10, including redshirt freshman Jason Nolf in the top spot. The 157-pounder has an average of 5.14 points this season, while 149-pound teammate Zain Retherford is close behind with an average of 5.05. Pittsburgh-Johnstown 184-pounder Travis McKillop leads Division II with an average of 5.27 points, which is well ahead of Mercyhurst's Francis Mizia in second place with an average of 4.71. The 2014-15 NCAA Division III Most Dominant Wrestler is well on his way to earning the award for the second year in a row as Wabash 184-pounder Riley Lefever has an average of 5.74 points. The Most Dominant Wrestler standings are calculated by adding the total number of points awarded through match results and dividing that number by the total number of matches wrestled. Points per match are awarded as follows. * Fall, forfeit, injury default or DQ = 6 points (-6 points for a loss) * Tech falls = 5 points (-5 points for a loss) * Major decision = 4 points (-4 points for a loss) * Decision = 3 points (-3 points for a loss) Navy 197-pounder Michael Woulfe retains the top spot in falls with 11 falls in Division I, while Nolf is second with 10 falls. McKillop's lead in the Most Dominant Wrestler standings is bolstered by his Division II-leading 10 falls. A three-way tie exists in Division III at 14 falls each between Roger Williams 141-pounder Justin Cochran, Williams 184-pounder Christopher Chorzepa and Stevens Institute of Technology 184-pounder AJ Kowal. Cochran holds the tiebreaker with his 14 falls coming in an aggregate time of 27:08. There is no change in the tech fall standings in Division I as last year's winner, Isaiah Martinez of Illinois, maintains a significant lead with 11 this season at 157 pounds. The Division II tech fall standings are a family affair at the top where the Mizia brothers of Mercyhurst hold the top two spots. Francis leads the country with seven at 165 pounds, while older brother August is right behind with six tech falls at 174 pounds. Springfield 149-pounder Zach Joseph maintains his lead in Division III with 10 tech falls, while Ursinus 149-pounder Alex Kramer has totaled nine tech falls this season. -
Two Pan American wrestling events coming to Frisco, Texas
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
USA Wrestling will be hosting two major international wrestling events at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas, the final weekend of February and the first weekend of March. This is a rare opportunity for people to be a part of the Olympic process and see Olympic athletes in action in their own community. The first event is the Pan American Wrestling Championships, set for Feb. 22-28. Teams from North, Central and South America will compete in the three Olympic disciplines, men's freestyle, women's freestyle and Greco-Roman. This is an annual event, featuring many top international wrestlers in all three styles. USA Wrestling has hosted the Pan American Championships five times, all in Colorado Springs, Colo. (2012, 2008, 1989, 1990, 1986). Next up is the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier, set for March 4-6. This event serves as a major qualifier for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The top two place winners in each of the 18 Olympic weight classes will qualify their nation to compete at the Olympic Games. Pan American nations can only qualify athletes at weight classes which have not yet been qualified for the Rio Games. In total, 36 spots in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are up for grabs. This is the second Olympic four-year cycle in a row that USA Wrestling has hosted the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier. In 2012, the event was hosted in Kissimmee, Fla. This will be the first time that either of these Pan American wrestling events have been hosted in Texas. Tickets for both events can be ordered at the same time. All-Session General Admission prices are $14.50 for a single day pass, $39.50 for a three-day pass and $59.50 for a six-day pass. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster. Please note that the three-day pass will be good for either the three days of the Pan American Championships or for the Pan American Olympic Qualifier, but cannot be used partially for one event and then the rest on the other. Click here for direct link for tickets through Ticketmaster. The lineups for Team USA, as well as for each of the other Pan American national teams, have not yet been announced. USA Wrestling will make announcements for each team roster as they become available. With the importance of these events, there are expected to be many World and Olympic medalists in the field. The United States has qualified wrestlers for five weight classes for the Olympic Games so far. These weight classes are 74 kilos in men's freestyle, 97 kilos in men's freestyle, 75 kg in Greco-Roman, 130 kilos in Greco-Roman and 75 kg in women's freestyle. Team USA will not have entries at those five weights at the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier. Therefore, the USA will enter athletes and seek to qualify at 13 weight classes in Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier, four in men's freestyle, four in Greco-Roman and five in women's freestyle. The first qualifying event for the Olympic Games was the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. in September 2015. Including the five qualified weights by the USA, in total, the Pan American nations qualified 12 weight classes for Rio. Canada, Colombia and Cuba have qualified two weight classes and Brazil has qualified one weight class. TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University wrestling team put together a solid performance on Tuesday, dominating their way to a 45-4 victory over Muskingum in Seiberling Gymnasium. The Student Princes did not allow a point other than escapes until the evening's final bout, as three-consecutive pins highlighted the match for the Student Princes. With the win, Heidelberg improved to 6-9 (2-1 OAC) in dual matches on the season while Muskingum fell to 1-7 (0-3 OAC). Tyler Price started off the match at 125 for the Student Princes, taking on Jordan Burkholder of the Muskies. Less than 30 seconds into the bout, Price was able to land a single-leg shot to record a takedown for the early lead. After working on top for a little bit, he was able to record two back points to extend his lead. Price nearly rode out the remainder of the period, but instead settled for a 4-1 lead with just over two minutes of riding time headed to the second period. With a neutral start to the second period, the two wrestled to no score for about a minute until Price picked up another take down and was able to ride out the rest of the period with a 6-1 edge. Price started the third period on the bottom, and although he was never able to work his way up, he still earned a point for riding time for a 7-1 victory. At 133, Ryan Hornack was unable to get anything going in the first period until under five seconds remained when he recorded a takedown and two back points for a 4-0 lead. Starting on the bottom in the second period, Hornack, worked for a quick reversal before allowing an escape to make his lead 6-1. That score held until the third period when Hornack allowed an escape to start the period after starting on top. A takedown with just over a minute remaining put him back in command 8-2. Hornack gave up one more escape before time ran out and he won the bout by an 8-3 decision. Heidelberg had one team point removed following the bout for misconduct. In the 141-pound bout, Justin Kihn was in total control early, as he picked up an impressive takedown before giving up a quick escape. Following another takedown by Kihn, he earned four points for a near fall to take an 8-2 lead to the second period. A neutral start to the second period saw mostly scoreless wrestling until Kihn earned a takedown and two back points for a 12-2 lead headed to the third period. Kihn started on the bottom for the third, but was handed the escape and then turned that into another takedown and earned two points due to stalling to win the bout by a tech fall, 17-2, in 6:45. Damon Cheek took the forfeit victory for the Berg at 149. At 157, Mark Carosella started things off with a takedown just over 30 seconds into the bout for the quick lead. He turned that into four near fall points as well to extend his lead, and then earned four more near fall points for the commanding lead. After an attempt to stand up by the Muskie wrestler, Carosella returned him to the mat and once again picked up four near fall points for a 14-0 lead after the first period. With a neutral start to the second period, Carosella earned a take down quickly for the tech fall in 3:13 by a score of 16-0. Aaron Banko capitalized on a single leg shot early in the first period of the 165 pound bout and worked his way on top all the way to a pin in 2:26. At 174, Darren Decker kept the momentum going for Heidelberg with a quick take down and gave up the escape quickly before earning one more take down, and then easily working his way for a pin in 39 seconds. Dillen Decker took to the mat at 184 for the Berg and had a take down and four points for a near fall less than 20 seconds into the bout for a 6-0 lead. After four more points for another near fall, Decker finished off his pin in 1:12 for the third-straight pin for the Student Princes. Gage Finegan earned the win by forfeit at 197 for the Berg. In the evening's final bout, Napoleon Bell wrestled at 285 for HU. He fell victim to a takedown late in the first period, but earned an escape to make it 2-1. His opponent earned one more take down before the end of the period to make it a 4-1 deficit for Bell entering the second period. Starting the second period on the bottom, Bell worked his way up for an escape about 30 seconds into the period to make the score 4-2. He gave up another take down shortly thereafter and gave up a point to stalling before the end of the period to trail 7-2 going into the final period. With a neutral start to the third period, Bell was unable to get anything going as he ended up falling by a 12-3 major decision. QUOTES FROM THE COACH Second-year head coach Tony Patrizi on his team's effort: "Your job is to go out there and take care of business, and our guys were able to do that tonight."
