NEW YORK -- Columbia needed every point possible to get by Brown in an EIWA wrestling dual, as the Lions topped the Bears, 16-15. Columbia won on criteria, having a 47-46 edge in total match points to move to 5-1 in duals on the season. The win was the third of the weekend for the Lions, who topped Buffalo (18-15) and Binghamton (18-17) yesterday. After the Bears came away with wins in the first two matches of the day, Joe Moita got the Lions on the board with a 3-0 win over Charlie Banaszak. Brown would surge ahead to a 12-3 lead with victories in the 149 and 157-pound bouts, before Tyrel White came away with a sudden victory win. Tied 1-1 after regulation, John Viruet was hit with his second stalling call to give the Columbia sophomore a 165-pound win. At 174, Zack Hernandez was close to bonus points, coming away with a 10-4 win over Andrew LaBrie. Going into the 184-pound match, Columbia trailed 12-9, but a last second takedown by Austin Pfarr gave Brown three more team points, as Pfarr was able to comeback to beat Mike Fetchet, 5-4. With two matches remaining, the Lions trailed 15-9, and needed two wins just to have a chance for a team victory on criteria. Troy Hembury and Garrett Ryan were able to deliver, as Hembury topped Gus Marker, 10-6, and Ryan came away with a 7-3 win over Joshua Durso-Finley. With no bonus points on either side during the 5-5 match split, the Lions were awarded one additional team point with a 47-46 edge in total points. With three wins this weekend, Columbia improves to 5-1 overall, and a perfect 4-0 in EIWA duals. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Drexel wrestling team swept the last five matches to defeat American, 21-16, on Sunday afternoon. Along with these victories, No. 13 Matthew Cimato also earned his 23rd win of the season in the outing and remains undefeated in dual competition with a perfect 10-0 record. American secured the first points of the day as its eighth-ranked David Terao earned a win-by-fall over Zack Fuentes at 125 pounds. The Eagles then extended their lead to 9-0 as Esteban Gomez-Rivera earned a 9-5 decision over Franco Ferraina at 133. In the 141 match, Kevin Devoy Jr. took American's Tyler Scotton to overtime as the score was knotted at 1-1 as time expired in regulation. Neither wrestler was able to score in the first sudden victory period, but escapes from both wrestlers in the first tie breaker would advance the match all the way to a second tie breaker round. Devoy had a 3-2 advantage going into the second period of TB2, but an escape from Scotton evened the score and a penalty against Devoy would ultimately give the match and a 12-0 lead to American. Drexel's first points of the day came as Cimato earned a 14-1 major decision over the Eagles' Cole Moseley at 149. American would take the 157 match with a major from the tenth-ranked John Boyle to make the score 16-4 halfway through the dual. However, the Dragons stepped up their game and won out the last five matches to go on to victory. Drexel's surge started as Austin Rose took an 11-4 decision from American's Mitchell Wightman at 165. Then Nick Elmer edged Jason Grimes by a 5-4 decision in the 174 match and Stephen Loiseau followed with a 15-0 technical fall over American's Joe Salvi. Trailing 16-15 with two matches to go, Nezar Haddad picked up an 8-6 victory to give the Dragons their first lead of the day, 18-16. A 2-0 win from Joey Goodhart in the heavyweight match solidified Drexel's 21-16 victory and allowed the Dragons to get a split of their first full weekend over conference competition. With the win Drexel improves to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in conference action while the Eagles move to 4-3 overall and 1-2 against EIWA opponents. The Dragons return to action on Friday as they open their home schedule by hosting EIWA opponent Binghamton at the Daskalakis Athletic Center for Spirit Night. EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Dakota Leach's second-period pin at 133 pounds gave SIUE wrestling an early lead as the Cougars clipped The Citadel 18-16 Sunday in a Southern Conference dual at the Vadalabene Center. It was SIUE's first-ever victory over The Citadel in four meetings against the Bulldogs. SIUE improved to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the SoCon. The Citadel, which was ranked third in the SoCon preseason poll, fell to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the SoCon. "It was nice to get a win for our team," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "We had a really close dual last night with Northern Illinois but just came up on the wrong end. Today for our guys to get that first SoCon win, that's really going to build some momentum towards the end of the year." Leach pulled out a pin in 3 minutes, 56 seconds over The Citadel's Caleb Smith. After being taken down in the first period, Smith chose the bottom position in the second period only to be caught in a cradle. "He got the crowd back into it," said Spates. "I think that was a big shift in the momentum." SIUE's John Fahy also earned a huge victory at 149 pounds. Fahy bested three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time defending Southern Conference champion Matthew Frisch with a 6-4 sudden victory. Fahy gained a takedown in the first overtime period. Spates said Fahy has been defeating the wrestlers he has supposed to defeat but hadn't picked up wins against wrestlers ranked higher. After the past two days, Spates noted he hopes this improves Fahy's standing. The Cougars also picked up three straight wins from Nate Higgins (165), Clayton Bass (174) and Derek Nagel (184) for the team victory. "We have Higgins up a weight at 165 now, and I think that's a good adjustment for him," said Spates. The Cougars have four dual meets planned for next week. SIUE travels to Brookings, South Dakota, for Friday duals against Cal State Bakersfield and South Dakota State. Next Sunday, SIUE face SoCon rival Davidson and Grand Canyon at the Vadalabene Center. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Fighting Illini got one of the nation's top wrestlers back this afternoon and used it to propel the team to a 32-10 victory over Michigan State. Brunson, the team's leader in pins, had missed four straight matches due to injury. As a team, the Illini scored bonus points in six matches, winning seven of the ten bouts this afternoon. With the win, Illinois improves to 2-3 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State drops to 0-4. Beginning the day at 174 pounds, Zac Brunson wasted no time in getting back into the groove he had established before missing the past four matches due to injury. In the first period, Brunson used a takedown and a four-point near fall to take an early 6-0 lead. Brunson escalated the action in period two, scoring 12 points to earn a technical fall without surrendering a point. The win was Brunson's 14th of the season and was his third tech fall of the season. Jeff Koepke doubled the early advantage with a 26-11 technical fall at 184 pounds. The major blow came in the third period when Koepke used a four-point near fall with a minute remaining that set him up for the technical fall with two more takedowns. Michigan State got on the board at 197 pounds when Jacob Cooper out-dueled Illinois' Andre Lee. Lee opened up a 2-0 lead, and stretched it to 4-1, but a four-point near fall by Cooper gave the Spartan the lead for good, holding on for the 9-6 win, cutting the Illini lead to 10-3. However, the seven=point deficit would be as close as the Spartans would come to Illini on the afternoon. At heavyweight, Brooks Black added the third bonus point victory in the first four matches with a 10-2 tally against Dimitrus Renfroe, using three takedowns 3:58 of riding time in route to the win. The most competitive match of the day came at 125 pounds between Francis Edelen and Michigan State's Mitch Rogaliner. The pair remained knotted 2-2 after the first period, but Rogaliner gained the lead with a takedown in period two to lead 4-3 entering the final two minutes. Battling back-and-forth, Edelen led 7-6 with under ten seconds remaining after two takedowns. However, Rogaliner used a last-ditch effort to get a reversal and win the bout 8-7. Coming out of the intermission with a 14-6 advantage, the Fighting Illini put the Spartans away with bonus points at 133, 157, and 165 pounds. The Illini began the second half of the match with Zane Richards' fourth pin of the season, using just 3:35 to get the fall over Garth Yenter. The win moves him to 18-0 on the season and gives him 60 dual points for the season. Michigan State would earn their final, and biggest, victory of the day at 141 pounds. Javier Gasca used early scoring to put Brock Ervin on his heels and earning a 12-3 major decision over Ervin. The loss snapped Ervin's two-game winning streak started last Sunday at Northern Illinois. The Illini grapplers reeled off 12 straight points in the final three bouts to finish of the Spartans, beginning with a 6-3 decision by Kyle Langenderfer over Kaelan Richards. The victory by Langenderfer extended the Illini lead to 23-10, securing the Orange and Blue's first Big Ten victory of 2016. Isaiah Martinez and Steven Rodrigues added style points to the win with bonus points in both duals. Martinez reeled in his 15th technical fall of the season with a 20-5 score, including two four-point near falls, that pushes his record to 19-0 and his winning streak to 61. The Illini romp concluded with Steven Rodrigues' team-high ninth major decision, beating Dean Vettese 20-9. The 32-10 victory gave the Illini their biggest win of the season since defeating Drexel 31-9 In New York on November 29. "I felt good," said Martinez. "It's always good to get the tech fall. I was actually going for the fall, but I got him on his back and he just spun out too hard and I wasn't able to hold him there. But, I'm happy. Any time I can get a bonus point victory, looks good on the resume." The Fighting Illini return home for their only match of the week when they meet top-ranked Penn State at 3 p.m. on the mat at Huff Hall on Saturday, January 23. The match against the nation's top-ranked team will be broadcasted live on Big Ten Network. Fans are encouraged to bring canned food for the Eastern Illinois Food Bank as part of the Hometown Heroes promotion. Illinois' starters will also be throwing out American Flag wrestling t-shirts prior to the match. Megaludis quickly took a 2-1 lead with a takedown and cut just seconds into the match. He worked White to the edge of the mat, shot low and notched a second takedown to open up a 4-2 lead and went on to pick up two more takedowns to lead 8-3 after a furious opening period. White chose down to start the second stanza and Megaludis built his riding time edge up to 1:05 before cutting him to an 8-4 score. He quickly took him down and cut him to lead 10-5. Megaludis would add one more takedown and four near fall points to lead 16-5 at the :40 mark. Megaludis took White down on the edge of the mat, cut him loose and then took him down once more as the period wound down to lead 20-7 with 2:20 in time after two. Nico chose top to start the third period, looking to tilt white for a pin or a tech fall. Conaway fought off an early Malone shot, forced a reset, and then began going to work in the middle of the mat. The wrestlers both met moving forward, forcing Malone into a quick concussion protocol. The Wildcat was quickly cleared to continue and action resumed with 1:38 on the clock. Conaway broke into the scoring column at the :48 mark with a solid takedown and then rode Malone out to lead 2-0 with :48 in riding time after one. Malone chose down to start the second stanza and escaped to a 2-1 score with 1:45 on the clock. Conaway countered a Malone shot, worked his way around for a takedown and cut Malone loose to a 4-2 lead at the 1:00 mark. The Lion senior blew through a solid high double, got the takedown and then quick worked his way into control for a fall at the 4:37 mark. 141: Junior All-American Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 13 at 141, received a forfeit victory at 141 and improved to 8-4 on the year. 149: Sophomore All-American Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 149, tangled with No. 4 Jason Tsirtsis in the dual's marquee match-up. Retherford set the tempo early, forcing Tsirtsis backwards for the opening minute while he looked for an opening to move through. With the Wildcat moving backwards for much of the opening period, Retherford broke through for his first takedown at the :38 mark to open up a 2-0 lead. Retherford then controlled the action from the top position for the rest of the period and carried that lead and :38 in time into the second. Retherford chose down to start the second period and escaped in just one second to a 3-0 lead. He then continued to press Tsirtsis, forcing him backwards and turning a high single into a takedown and a 5-0 lead with 1:30 on the clock. Retherford cut Tsirtsis loose to a 5-1 score and then continued to move forward. A fast shot led to another takedown and a 7-1 lead for the Lion sophomore. Retherford got hit for an illegal hold call, cutting the lead to 7-2. A ride out gave Retherford a 7-2 lead with 1:54 in time after two periods. Tsirtsis chose down to start the third period and Retherford cut him loose to a 7-3 score with 1:40 on the clock. The Lion sophomore took Tsirtsis down just seconds after the escape to up his lead to 9-3 and then cut him loose once more. Retherford added another quick takedown, led 11-4 with :50 on the clock and then cut Tsirtsis loose once more as bonus points loomed. After picking up a point on another Tsirtsis stall, Retherford closed out the bout with a final takedown. With 3:33 in riding time, Retherford walked away with a dominating 15-5 major with 3:33 in riding time. 157: Red-shirt freshman Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 3 at 157, met Anthony Petrone. Nolf wasted no time blowing open a big lead. The Lion freshman took Petrone down early, turned him for four near fall points twice and led 10-0 quickly. He then adjusted to his feet, locked up a near standing cradle and got the pin at the 2:13 mark. 165: Red-shirt freshman Shakur Rasheed (Coram, N.Y.), ranked No. 16 at 165, tangled with Luke Norland. Rasheed came out quickly, rolling through a low double to force a scramble and took a 2-0 lead at the 2:05 mark after steadily gaining control of Norland's ankles. After a reset with 1:28 on the clock, Shakur broke Norland down and put together a strong ride, nearly turning the Wildcat for back points but settling for a ride out and a 2-0 lead with 2:08 in time after the opening period. Rasheed chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. He then connected on a high single, forcing another scramble and getting his second takedown to lead 5-0 with :55 on the clock. Norland got called for stalling for the first time as the period ended and Rasheed led 5-0 with 2:52 in time after two. Norland chose down to start the third period and Rasheed quickly broke him down flat once more. Rasheed clinched the riding time point and then continued to work for a chance to turn the Wildcat. He was unable to pick up the back points but another strong ride out gave Rasheed a 5-0 win with 4:52 in riding time. 174: Red-shirt freshman Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 1 at 174, battled Mitch Sliga. Nickal scored quickly, taking Sliga down and cutting him, taking him down a second time and then going to work on top at the 2:10 mark. He deftly locked up a cradle, steadied his position to stay in bounds and got the fall at the 1:13 mark in the first period. 184: Sophomore Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 13 at 184, met Regis Durbin. McCutcheon came out of the gates setting the tempo early. As he moved him for a shot in the middle of the mat, he made contact with Durbin the Wildcat was forced into concussion protocol. Durbin could not continue and McCutcheon got the injury default victory at the 0:52 mark. 197: Senior All-American Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 1 at 197, took on Jacob Berkowitz. McIntosh took Berkowitz down quickly and cut him loose to a 2-1 score. The Lion senior followed that up with another takedown and led 4-2 after a Durbin escape. Looking for career win 100, McIntosh continued his offensive barrage and took Durbin down a third time to up his lead to 6-2 with 1:48 in time after one. Berkowitz chose down to start the second period and escaped to a 6-3 score at the 1:15 mark. McIntosh quickly took him down to an 8-3 lead then locked up a cradle and turned him for four near fall points and led 12-3 with a clinched riding time point after two. McIntosh chose neutral to start the third period and quickly rolled through a high double to up his lead to 14-3. He worked solid top control for over a minute, looking for a pinning opportunity. McIntosh cut him loose on a reset and then added one more takedown to post a 17-4 takedown with 4:57 in riding time for his 100th career win. 285: Sophomore Wes Phipps (Grove City, Pa.) faced off against Conan Jennings at 285. Phipps came out hot early, working his way into control of a high single that appeared to be a takedown. The call was not given to the Lion sophomore and a reset was called with 1:51 on the clock. Phipps continued to press the offense and nearly connected on another high single. Jennings used nearly 80 pounds of weight advantage to fight the move off and keep the bout scoreless at the 1:00 mark. With the bout moving into the second period scoreless, Jennings chose down to start the second period. Phipps maintained control for :26 before Jennings escaped to a 1-0 lead. Phipps got dinged for stalling a second time and fell behind 2-0. He then shot low again and this time Jennings countered for the bout's first takedown to lead 4-0. He locked up a cradle to turn Phipps for four back points as the period wound down and Phipps trailed 8-0 after two. Phipps chose neutral to start the third period and continued to shoot. But Jennings was able to defend his way out of trouble, forcing a reset with 1:04 on the clock. The Lion sophomore continued to shoot, but each time Jennings was able to defend his way to a reset. Jennings was able to add a final counter takedown and posted the 10-0 major.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The No. 3 NC State wrestling team won eight bouts, including six straight, and dominated #17 Virginia in a 35-7 ACC win on Sunday. The Wolfpack (17-0) won the first two bouts and started with a 8-0 lead, then after a UVA (5-3) win, the Pack won six straight to secure the home dual win. The win improves the Pack to a perfect 17-0 this season, including 4-0 versus ranked foes. The 17 wins are already the third-most in school history, and are a career-best for head coach Pat Popolizio at NC State. Two-time defending NCAA Champion #1 Nick Gwiazdowski dominated the opening bout, getting two four-point near falls and a two-point near fall to start the Pack with an 18-3 technical win. Gwizdowski improves to 20-0 on the season, and extends his NCAA-best winning streak to 75 matches. Redshirt-freshman Sean Fausz then scored three first-period takedowns and jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first period at 125 pounds, and finished off his win by riding Virginia the entire third period and scoring an 8-4 win, his first ACC dual win of his career. After a technical fall for UVA at 133, the Pack responded with six straight wins - four for bonus points. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois University wrestling team pulled off a remarkable comeback on Saturday evening in an in-state dual matchup with Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, winning the final three matches to record a 19-18 victory after previously trailing by 12 team points on two occasions. Wrestling the Cougars (1-8, 0-3 SoCon) for the second consecutive season as part of the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation Convention at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in the Illinois state capital of Springfield, the Huskies (4-5, 0-2 MAC) emerged victorious again - despite falling behind 12-0 after losing the first three matches. NIU's chances looked dim when the Huskies then trailed 18-6 after seven bouts in the dual with SIUE on Saturday evening. However, with youth wrestlers from all over the state watching on as two Illinois college teams battled, the Huskies managed to pull off an incredible rally thanks to a pin by Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) at 125 pounds scored six team points for NIU to make it 18-12, a major decision victory by Austin Eicher (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) at 133 closed the gap to 18-16 with one match remaining and No. 14 Steve Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) sealed the comeback with a dominating decision win at 141 pounds to lift NIU to victory. NIU wrestling head coach Ryan Ludwig hailed the belief and execution of his lightweight wrestlers, who rescued the result for the Huskies at the end after the dual had started at 149 pounds. "I give massive credit to our lightweights for getting it done," Coach Ludwig said after the dual. "Alijah ignited the fire with a fall, and Eicher and Bleise followed suit with high-energy wrestling." Trace Engelkes (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) and No. 16 Shawn Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly) also recorded individual wins for the Huskies at 174 and 197 pounds, respectively, to keep NIU in the dual after the team had lost the opening three matches and fallen into a 12-0 deficit. Scott improved to 9-0 this season in duals after winning on Saturday night against 2015 NCAA Championships qualifier Jake Tindle to notch another quality victory. Looking to build on the momentum of Saturday's sensational win, the NIU wrestling team has a chance tomorrow to get back to an even dual record this season when the Huskies (4-5) face another SoCon school in The Citadel (4-3, 1-0 SoCon) on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. downstate at SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill. Return of Avery, Matthews spurs Edinboro to 31-7 win over George Mason

EDINBORO, Pa. -- Buoyed by the return of All-American Vic Avery and Austin Matthews, the Edinboro University wrestling team won its 15th straight Eastern wrestling League match on Saturday night with a 31-7 win over George Mason at McComb Fieldhouse. It marked just the second home dual of the season for the Fighting Scots as they improved to 6-6 overall and 4-0 in the EWL. After losing earlier in the day at Cleveland state, as well, George Mason is not 5-7 and 1-2, respectively. Avery, ranked second by InterMat at 184 lbs., and Matthews had been both out all year while recovering from knee surgeries. They provide a young Edinboro lineup with a great deal more experience. Avery, who earned All-American honors for the first time a year ago after finishing third at 184 lbs. at the NCAA Division I National Championships, was dominant in his return. He won by technical fall at 6:28 by a score of 23-7 over Luke Ludke. Adorned in gold shoes, he finished with eight takedowns in all. Matthews had a much more difficult time while facing Greg Flournoy at 157 lbs. Flournoy was a returning NCAA qualifier after finishing second at the EWL Championships last year. Matthews opened up a 2-1 lead after one period with a takedown just 17 seconds into his first match of the year. He would ride out Flournoy in the second period, and following a third-period escape, added a takedown with 38 seconds remaning. He wrapped up the 6-1 decision with riding time to drop Flournoy to 21-6. Matthews was 9-0 a year ago and ranked in the top five before going down a month into the season. George Mason would win two of the first three matches to take a 7-3 lead, but it was all Edinboro after that as the Fighting Scots ran off wins in the final seven bouts. Sean Russell improved to 20-5 with an 8-1 decision over Ibrahim Banduka (14-12) at 125 lbs. Vince Rodriguez (16-6) won a 12-2 major decision over Anthony Rivera (6-8) at 133 lbs., and Tejon Anthony (15-7) followed with a 5-2 decision over Tyler Vath (7-10) at 141 lbs. Patricio Lugo, ranked 20th by InterMat, continued his impressive freshman campaign with an 18-2 technical fall (6:35) over Konbeh Koroma (10-12) at 149 lbs. While improving to 23-3, Lugo jumped out to an 8-1 lead after one period, nearly pinning Koroma in the first minute before settling for four near-fall points. All told, he had three takedowns and added another four near-fall points in the third period. Casey Fuller picked up his 20th win of the season with a 4-0 decision over Patrick Davis (9-10) at 165 lbs. Now 20-5, the redshirt senior was never seriously challenged after a takedown 11 seconds into the bout. He added an escape in the second and picked up a point for riding time. Patrick Jennings won a 10-4 decision over Ryan Forrest (7-7) at 174 lbs. to improve to 18-11. The redshirt senior led 5-1 after two periods thanks to a pair of takedowns, then added two more takedowns in the final period. Senior Vince Pickett registered the lone fall of the evening, as he needed just 1:43 to pin Cameron Houston (1-15). Pickett improved to 17-10 with his third fall of the season. Redshirt freshman Billy Miller capped the evening with a 10-3 decision over Matt Voss (17-10) at heavyweight. Now 22-5, Miller had takedowns in each of the first two periods for a 4-2 lead, then pulled away with an escape and his third and fourth takedowns in the third period. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Three straight wins including back-to-back pins in the final four matches helped the Navy wrestling team rally from an eight-point deficit to defeat American Friday night at Bender Arena in the nation's capital. The Midshipmen are now 7-1 on the year, including 3-1 against EIWA competition. "Tonight we found ourselves behind at the halfway point and it was a good way for these guys to learn valuable lessons about how important bonus points can be," said second-year Navy head coach Joel Sharratt. "We are still working to find the right combination at a couple of weights, but 174 through 197 is becoming an Iron Curatin that is exciting to watch." American jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage over the Midshipmen as eighth-ranked and three-time NCAA qualifier David Terao earned an 18-5 major decision over Navy sophomore Brant Leadbeter (Owings, Md.), while AU redshirt junior Esteban Gomez-Rivera picked up an 8-6 win over Navy sophomore Zack Davis (Granger, Ind.). Davis trailed 6-1 heading into the final period, but Gomez-Rivera surrendered three points to a pair of stalls and locked hands. Gomez-Rivera scored what would be the match-winning points on a takedown on the edge near the Navy bench with 45 seconds to go in the match for an 8-4 lead. Davis got the escape with 28 seconds to go and was awarded a stall point with seven seconds to go, but could not get a shot for the win. The Mids got on the scoreboard following a 3-0 victory by rookie 141-pound Nicholas Gil (Crystal Lake, Ill.) over redshirt senior Tyler Scotton, who transfered to American after Boston U. dropped its wrestling program. Navy trimmed the deficit to just one when sophomore Corey Wilding (Pittsburgh, Pa.) used a strong second half of his match to pull out a 6-3 win over Cole Moseley. Wilding trailed 2-1 heading into the second period, but earned the reversal to open the third, gave way to the optional upright position and then scored an escape to take a 5-3 lead with under 30 seconds to go in the period. He went on to ride Moseley the entire third period to get riding time and the 6-3 victory. The Eagles, however, would win the next two bouts to push their lead to 14-6, the largest of the match. Tenth-ranked John Boyle posted a 10-2 major decision over Navy sophomore 157-pound Drew Daniels (Overland Park, Kan.), while Mitchell Wightman, another Boston U. transfer, edged out Navy team captain John Keck (Wading River, N.Y.). Keck, who missed Friday night's home match due to illness, held a 3-1 advantage with under a minute left in the bout, but gave up the escape with 45 seconds to go. Wightman scored the match-winning takedown with 25 seconds left. There was some controversy, however, as the referee signaled a locked hands violation against Wightman with roughly 10 seconds remaining which would have tied the match. The referee then waved off the point and raised Wightman's hand as the winner. Navy made its move at 174 pounds where 18th-ranked Jadaen Bernstein (Glen Gardner, N.J.) outscored American's Jason Grimes 3-1 over the final four minutes and tacked on better than three minutes of riding time for a 7-3 decision. Ranked 15th nationally at 184 pounds, senior Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.) wasted little time in taking advantage of an inexperienced Joe Salvi, a redshirt freshman who is winless in dual action this season. Miller built a 4-1 advantage in the first minute and 20 seconds of the match before putting Salvi's shoulders to the mat for the fall at 1:47 and giving the Mids their first lead of the evening at 15-14. Miller, who also won by fall on Friday night, has won 11 matches this season by fall and 34 over his career. The 34 pins are the fifth most in school history, trailing fourth-place Scott Kelly (1984-88) by just one and third-place Karl Haywood (1995-99) by just two. Meanwhile, 11 single-season pins sits just outside of the top 10. Senior 197-pound Michael Woulfe (Oak Park, Ill.) was denied a pin at the buzzer in Friday night's match against Drexel, but he refused to give up in Saturday's bout against AU sophomore Jeric Kasunic. Kasunic jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the match, but was dinged for his second stall warning in the opening period to give Woulfe a point. The two continued to battle as Woulfe was able score the reversal and get Kasunic on his back for the pin at 2:40. Woulfe has also had a knack of getting wins by fall this season, earning his 12th of the year and 19 over his career. Woulfe's win, meanwhile, secured the Navy victory for the second straight match. American took the final bout of the night as freshman Jake Scanlan used his weight advantage to post a 5-2 win over second-year standout Nick Mabry (New Braunfels, Texas). The Midshipmen will return to home next Friday night when they play host to Maryland. The match will be held at Wesley Brown Field House and is on tap for a 7:30 pm start. WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Army West Point wrestling team won its second Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association meet of the season and improved to .500 overall as the Black Knights downed Hofstra 33-10 at Hayes Gym in Arvin Gymnasium on Saturday. "We keep getting better, and that's a positive thing," said head coach Kevin Ward. "I still think that at certain times we need to keep putting pressure on people. I think we could've scored some more points. It was a good performance, but I think we can do better." The Black Knights came out with high intensity, taking the first 4 matches and jumping out to a 14-point lead. Starting at 165 pounds, Army alternated between decisions and major decisions for the first four matches. Andrew Mendel was able to come away with an 8-4 decision to get things started and draw even overall at 11-11 and in duals at 3-3. He was followed by senior Brian Harvey, who dominated at 174 for the entire match. The New Palestine, Ind., native scored six early points in period one with a takedown and a four-point near fall and never looked back en route to his 15th win of the season. Harvey's 13-3 major decision extended the lead to 7-0 before Samson Imonode earned his first dual victory of the season with a 13-8 decision. Bryce Barnes continued the trend, working his way to an 18-8 major decision. Hofstra utilized their size in the heavyweight match to get a key four points with a 9-1 major decision for Mike Hughes before a pin in the 125-pound match brought the score within four. Looking to answer back, freshman Austin Harry ramped up the intensity in the 133-pound match with four four-point near falls in period 1 en route to a 16-0 technical fall. Harry's win improves his record in duals to 3-2 courtesy of his second-career technical fall. Logan Everett provided the dagger for the Cadets with an unexpected pin over Jamel Hudson, who was ranked 16th by the OpenMat coming into the match. The pin was Everett's fourth of the season, coming at 3:27 to make the score 25-10. "My game plan was to just stay solid and in good positions," said Everett on facing Hudson. "I didn't get to my offense as much as I wanted to, but I was able to wear him down and open some things up for me. It was really big for me to be able to get a win like this after last week." Javier Rodriguez followed that up with a 9-7 decision before Russell Parsons Jr., who came into the match ranked 14th by InterMat, took a 16-0 technical fall to close out the meet and improving his team-leading win total to 19. The Black Knights will return to action tomorrow against Penn at 5 p.m. from Hayes Gym in Arvin Gymnasium with the team's nine seniors being recognized before the meet. LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Broncs won eight of the 10 bouts to defeat Lock Haven in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Saturday. “I'm pleased with the way our kids wrestled today,†said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “We're still a bit banged up but the kids responded today.†For Rider (5-6, 1-1 EWL) junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) won by tech fall at 197 to give Rider an 11-3 lead. “Ryan did a good job,†Taylor said. “He continues to get better and better each week.†Wolfe improves to 2-0 in the EWL, 16-8 overall and 8-4 in duals. Senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), the 2015 EWL Champion at 133, defeated last year's EWL 141 runner-up 6-3 to give Rider a 20-3 lead. “Rob is back and we're happy about that,†Taylor said. “I was out for four or five weeks with a rib injury,†said Deutsch, a three-time NCAA qualifier. “It stinks being on the sidelines watching but I had to be 100 percent before I came back or it could have been a problem all year. I've felt better every match since I've been back.†“He beat a good kid today,†Taylor said. “He was in the weight class above me so I've never wrestled him before,†Deutsch said of his opponent, Bobby Rehm. ““He was pretty tough. Lock Haven always has had great wrestlers. The score might not show it but they wrestled hard today. It always feels great to get a conference win, especially in your home gym.†Rider senior Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) won at 165, his 54th career win but just his third win of the year (3-2, 2-1 duals). “Curt's good,†Taylor said. “We told him that we need him to not just fill in but to win, and he got a nice win today.†Rider sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won a major decision at 149 for the final score. “You could see the real Chad Walsh today,†Taylor said of his EWL champion who was ill last week while competing at the Virginia Duals. “Chad did a great job trying to go last week but that wasn't Chad. We all saw Chad today.†Walsh improved to 2-0 in the EWL, 15-5 overall. Rider sophomore Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) won to give Rider a 6-0 lead. “Stinson beat a pretty good kid,†Taylor said. Sophomore Mauro Correnti (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross), senior Zach Valcarce (Willas, NJ/Lower Cape May) and junior Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) also won for Rider. For Lock Haven (6-6, 1-1 EWL) freshman Tristan Sponseller won at 184 to improve to 19-9. All-American Dan Neff won at 149 for his 100th career win. Lock Haven placed third at the EWL Championships last year behind perennial champion Edinboro and second place Rider. Rider has now won the last five meetings with the Bald Eagles but Lock Haven leads the all-time series 16-8. Rider won 18-16 at Lock Haven last year. Each team won five bouts and four of the matches went into overtime. Rider defeated Lock Haven 23-12 in 2014 and 19-14 in 2013. Rider travels to Edinboro for an EWL dual January 23 and to Cleveland State on the 24th. “Last two years we haven't done well against those two and this year it is even tougher having both of them on the same weekend,†Deutsch said. “We have to be ready this year.†“We will try to get ready for that weekend,†Taylor said. “I believe it will be two good matches.†Results: 165: Curt Delia-R dec. Bonus points power Lehigh to 40-6 win at Franklin & Marshall
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
LANCASTER, Pa. -- No. 8 Lehigh scored bonus points in all eight of its bout wins to cruise to a 40-6 victory over Franklin & Marshall Saturday at Mayser Center. Despite missing several starters, the Mountain Hawks registered six technical falls, including the final five bouts, plus a pin and a major decision on their way to their eighth straight dual victory. Lehigh improves to 10-1 with the victory while Franklin & Marshall falls to 3-8. "We want our guys putting points on the board and we opportunities for some different guys to wrestle today and they didn't disappoint," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "It has been a really fun team to watch this last month or so. We just have to keep growing and getting better each week." The dual began at 125 with sophomore Darian Cruz propelling Lehigh to the early lead with a 23-4 technical fall over Aaron Moldoff in 6:09. Cruz finished with six takedowns plus a pair of near falls and an escape in his 20th win of the season. F&M claimed the next two bouts to take a 6-5 lead after three matches. At 133, sophomore Dean Somers subbed for senior Mason Beckman, who instead competed at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Classic. Somers dropped a 4-1 tiebreaker decision to Scott Stevens. Tied 1-1 after regulation and sudden victory, Stevens registered an escape and takedown in the first half of the tiebreaker and held Somers off in the second half. The featured bout of the dual matched No. 15 Rick Durso and 18th-ranked junior Randy Cruz at 141. Cruz had a solid ride in the second period but ultimately gave up a reversal to trail 2-0 after two. A third period Cruz escape was the only other scoring as several Cruz shots were thwarted in a 2-1 Durso victory. The Mountain Hawks took over from there with seven consecutive bonus wins. Freshman Cortlandt Schuyler, wrestling in his hometown in place of Laike Gardner registered six takedowns in a 14-6 win over Jason Bing at 149. That win gave Lehigh a 9-6 lead it would not relinquish. At 157, freshman Ian Brown subbed for Mitch Minotti and picked up the only fall of the dual. Brown took Sharron Townsend to his back early on and after some hard work got the pin at 1:29. The final five bouts of the dual were all Lehigh wins by technical fall. Sophomore Drew Longo moved up to 165 in place of Ryan Preisch and won 20-5 in 5:19 against Gordon Bolig. Longo scored seven takedowns before using a cradle for four near fall points. An eight takedown ended the bout early in the third period. Freshman Gordon Wolf posted his first career dual meet win with an 18-3 technical fall over Colin Gironda at 174. Wolf totaled four takedowns and had four point near falls in the second and third periods. "These guys just want to wrestle and are a lot of fun to watch," Santoro said of the backups who saw action on Saturday. "This is the kind of style we want to have all the time." Senior Nathaniel Brown followed with a quick 18-0 technical fall over Josh Young at 184. After an early takedown, Brown used four four-point near falls to end the match in just 2:17. At 197, junior Ben Haas made it four straight technical falls with a 16-1 win over Charles Kerkesner in 3:36. Haas led 12-1 after one and opened the second period with a reversal and two point near fall. Senior Max Wessell closed the dual with a 21-3 technical fall over Antonio Pelusi at 285. Wessell's second four-point near fall ended the match in 5:36. "We've been spending a lot of time on turning people from the top position," Santoro said. "That's going to be a difference maker when we get later in the season. The guys did a good job today." The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their road swing next Saturday when they travel to No. 16 Cornell for a 6:30 p.m. dual. Audio coverage will be available on ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley (1230, 1320 and 1160) as well as ESPNLV.com. Corvallis, Ore. -- Oregon State's January resurgence continued on Saturday afternoon as the No. 23 Beavers crushed unranked Wyoming 32-7 before a crowd of 667 at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers (5-4) won 8 of 10 matches and scored eight bonus points on two falls and two major decisions. The victory also avenged a 21-17 loss to the Cowboys in Laramie in 2015, OSU's only regular-season setback. Redshirt sophomore Cody Crawford (197) started the match with a pin and the Beavers were off and running. They led 20-0 before the Cowboys (1-5) broke through at 141 and 159 with their lone wins of the afternoon. “Crawford getting that pin was big†and set the tone for the afternoon, said Zalesky, whose team's victory at then-No. 16 Central Michigan on Jan. 9 fueled OSU's return to the Top 25 for the first time since Dec. 8. “That's maybe the best we've wrestled overall, from individual to individual, as far as intensity, attacking and setting the pace of the matches. It's always easier when you win to keep getting better. “The things we are working on in practice I see us applying in competition. We just have to keep getting better in certain situations and keep wrestling like we are right now.†Crawford and senior Seth Thomas (165) had pins. Thomas trailed 6-0 in the first period before he rallied for a fall at the 5:00 mark. Sophomore Ronnie Bresser (125) and redshirt junior Joey Palmer (133) followed up redshirt sophomore Amarveer Dhesi's with at heavyweight with major decisions for an insurmountable 17-0 advantage after four bouts. “Dhesi went out and got a good score, Bresser and Palmer put a lot of points on the board … we got some momentum in those first four weight classes and it carried over,†Zalesky said. Redshirt junior Joey Delgado (149), redshirt sophomore Tyler Chay (174) and redshirt freshman Corey Griego (184) also prevailed by decision. Bresser (No. 6 InterMat) and Dhesi (9) defeated ranked opponents, Drew Templeman (15) and Tanner Harms (19), respectively. The Beavers were the fifth-straight ranked opponent for Wyoming, which competes in the Big 12 Conference. They are 0-5 in that stretch, with losses to Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Nebraska, the lone common opponent thus far, in addition to Saturday's loss. The Beavers are idle next week. They open their Pacific-12 Conference season at Arizona State at 4 p.m. Jan. 29 in a dual that will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. Their next home meet is Jan. 31 against Northern Colorado. ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the second day in a row, the bottom of Cornell's lineup came up big and the Big Red extended its Ivy League win streak to 14 years with a 30-13 victory over Brown on Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red improved to 3-3 (2-0 Ivy), while the Bears fell to 0-4 (0-1 Ivy). Cornell won its 70th straight against Ivy League opponents, but it wasn't a walk in the park. A Cornell forfeit at 133, a major decision win by Justin Staudenmayer of Brown at 157 and a tight 11-7 victory by Jon Viruet at 165 gave the Bears a 13-10 win after six matches. Just like on Friday night against Harvard, Cornell took control over the next three matches, all decided by bonue points, and earned a forfeit win at heavyweight for the final margin. For the second straight day, junior Gabe Dean picked up six big team points with a pin, squaring Austin Pfarr's shoulders to the mat 2:35 into the first period. That came right after seventh-ranked Brian Realbuto fell just short of a tech fall win over Andrew LaBrie at 174 (19-5) and before Owen Scott put the match away with an 8-0 shutout of Augustus Marker at 197. Freshmen Dalton Macri and Joey Galasson won their second straight Ivy bouts to open their career, with Galasso holding on for a 4-3 win over Steven Galiardo at 149. Macri dominated much of the way en route to an 18-6 major decision victory over Michael Russo at 125. Cornell remains home as it welcomes No. 8 Lehigh to Ithaca on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red has won three straight contests against the Mountain Hawks, including last season's 21-9 victory in Bethlehem, Pa. Results: 125: Dalton Macri (C) won by major decision over Michael Russo (B), 18-6 133: Zeke Salvo (B) won by forfeit 141: Dylan Realbuto (C) won by decision over Charlie Banaszak (B), 10-3 149: Joey Galasso (C) won by decision over Steven Galiardo (B), 4-3 157: Justin Staudenmayer (B) won by major decision over Kyle Simaz (C), 8-0 165: Jon Viruet (B) won by decision over Chris Dowdy (C), 11-7 174: #7 Brian Realbuto (C) won by major decision over Andrew LaBrie (B), 19-5 184: #1 Gabe Dean (C) won by fall over Austin Pfarr (B), 2:35 197: Owen Scott (C) won by major decision over Augustus Marker (B), 8-0 285: Jeramy Sweany (C) won by forfeit

STANFORD, Calif. -- Duke's Conner Hartmann and Mitch Finesilver remained unbeaten in dual action this afternoon as the Blue Devils fell to No. 16 Stanford, 27-15. Duke rallied to within five after falling behind 17-6 midway through the match, but the Cardinal was able to hold off the Blue Devils' comeback. Duke falls to 1-5 with three of the setbacks coming to top 20 opponents. Stanford improves to 7-2 overall. Hartmann got the Blue Devils off to a fast start at 197 pounds. The redshirt senior, ranked fifth nationally and undefeated in duals, dominated the first period and built his riding time. He picked up right where he left off in the second and finally was able to turn Michael Sojka for the pin in 4:36 and a 6-0 lead for Duke. Stanford picked up four straight victories for the Cardinal to go ahead 16-10 heading into the 149-pound match. Nathan Butler put Stanford on the board with a major decision at heavyweight and the Cardinal added six more points due to a forfeit at 125. After the Cardinal garnered a decision and major decision from a pair of top 20 wrestlers at 133 and 141, the Blue Devils narrowed the gap to 17-9 with a 7-6 decision from Finesilver at 149 pounds. Finesilver and Paul Fox battled evenly throughout the match as the two headed into the final period knotted at 5-5. Fox escaped to start the third, but Finesilver scored a takedown for the 7-6 lead and ended up winning by injury default for six more points for the Blue Devils. The redshirt freshman is unbeaten, 6-0, in duals and 17-5 overall on the year. Stanford extended its lead back to eight, 20-12, to set up arguably the most anticipated match of the afternoon between Duke's 17th-ranked Jake Faust and No. 12 Jim Wilson. In two previous meetings, Faust has won by decision handing Wilson two of his four losses on the year. This afternoon proved to be no different as Faust built a 4-2 first-period lead and extended it to 7-2 after five minutes of wrestling. The redshirt junior added two more points and never let Wilson get within striking distance of a win. Faust is 10-4 on the year and 3-0 against top 20 wrestlers with all three of those coming against Wilson. Trailing 20-15 with two matches remaining, Duke was in search of wins at 174 and 184 to upset the No. 16 Cardinal. At 174, Peter Galli went up early and used a big second period to ice the victory for Stanford with a 10-2 decision over Duke's Alec Schenk. The Cardinal added three more points with a 9-4 decision at 184 pounds to secure the 12-point victory. Duke is back in action Sunday evening at Cal Poly. The bout is schedule to start at 10 p.m., and features live video and live scoring. Links are available on GoDuke.com. TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State wrestling's dual meet with No. 14 Iowa State came down to the wire, with the reigning Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week, senior Matt Kraus, grinding out the win at 149 pounds to clinch the 23-18 upset on Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. “I think the team was gritty,†head coach Zeke Jones said. “I define grit as, regardless of what happens, when things are happening good or things are happening bad, you still have to stay determined and focused to end up with your hand raised and win a dual meet and I think they did that. Overall the effort was good. They concentrated and stayed focused. They attacked and stayed tough in the tough moments. The crowd was great tonight too. We really appreciate the Sun Devil support.†Kraus, ranked as high as No. 14 in the country in his weight class, came in with the team score at 20-18 in ASU's favor, and the Sun Devils needed the win to clinch the dual with the Cyclones. He took on Iowa State's No. 18 Gabe Moreno, and used a third-period takedown before holding on in the 5-4 victory. "It felt good,†Kraus said. “Last home meet, we started at 157 there too and I was the last match, and I won there but it came down to criteria and they ending up winning the duel meet. It was nice going out there, knowing if I won the match we won as a team so it felt pretty good. My four years here they've beaten us every year, so it's nice to get the win. ASU started the night off with a win, redshirt sophomore Oliver Pierce picking up four points with the 12-4 major decision over Logan Breitenbach, but then fell behind as the Cyclones picked up a pin and a major decision win in the following weights. Redshirt senior and All-American Blake Stauffer snapped the losing skid with an 8-2 decision win over Dane Pestano at 184 pounds, while fellow redshirt senior Josh DaSilveira pinned Marcus Harrington in the first period of the bout at 197 to give the Sun Devils back the lead, 13-10. Freshman Tanner Hall picked up an 11-0 major decision over Joe Scanlan to give ASU the seven-point lead, before Iowa State grabbed a decision at 125 and a tech fall at 133 to go up, 18-17. At 141, Robbie Mathers picked up the three points ASU needed to regain the lead with an 8-3 decision over John Meeks, before Kraus wrapped up the match at 149 pounds. This marks the second consecutive home dual where Kraus has wrestled in the final bout of the night against a ranked opponent, upsetting Boise State's Geo Martinez on Sunday, Nov. 22. Up next, the Sun Devils travel to Utah Valley on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 7:30 p.m. MT before returning to Wells Fargo Arena to take on West Virginia and Pac-12 foe Stanford on Saturday at 11 a.m. MT and 3 p.m. MT, respectively. Both home matches, along with a neutral bout between the Mountaineers and Cardinal at 1 p.m. MT, will air on the Pac-12 Networks. Results: 157: Oliver Pierce (ASU) def. Sometimes we come out too technical and too tactical that when someone knocks you on your back of your head we wonder, ‘Why is this guy trying to beat us up?' So we changed the training tactic a little bit. We drug the team out to deep water quite a few times in the last three weeks. I'm not saying they didn't sink a couple times in training, but I think we had to toughen them up a little bit and roughen them up a little bit and I think that paid off in our training over the last few weeks. And I think it showed tonight. I think they finally showed up with some toughness.†On how much confidence this win gives his team for the rest of the season: “I think it certainly gives the team a lot of confidence when you can beat a team of that caliber. We're going to enjoy it tonight, because you have to re-earn it the next week. I keep losing close to my heart, meaning that I don't forget what it felt like to lose to Boise State. Unless I get about a thousand wins in a row I don't start to get excited. Good win, nice job, enjoy it tonight and let's get back to work tomorrow. But, as you were saying, they know they can compete with a team of that caliber.â€

EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Edinboro University wrestling team will celebrate the Muscle Movement Foundation's "Pin Muscle Disease" on Saturday, January 16 when they host George Mason at 7:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse. As part of the event, the Fighting Scots will assist Damon Church. Church suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as ALS, which falls under a muscle disease category labeled Spinal Muscular Atrophies. Fans can begin to donate to Damon's cause at http://fnd.us/c/815VD0/sh/d5O7m5. "I'm extremely pleased that we can do our part to assist in such a worthy cause," stated head coach Tim Flynn. "We hope that Edinboro and wrestling fans will go online and make a contribution. In addition, we will be taking donations the night of the George Mason dual." "The Scots are pleased to announce they have joined the Muscle Movement Foundation in the fight against neuromuscular disease for the second consecutive year," stated Rob DeMasi, CEO and Founder of the MMF. "Neuromuscular disease includes, but is not limited to, conditions such as ALS, muscular dystrophy, and muscular atrophies. Reportedly, muscle disease affects over one million individuals in the United States, robbing the individual of their ability to walk, talk, swallow, and breathe. Although we currently cannot take the disease from affected fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters, we are wrestling to help the MMF provide accommodations to assist a local affected family! As we wrestle to 'Pin Muscle Disease' this season to assist ALS 'Muscle Champion' Damon Church, you may join us on our journey! BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana wrestling team took seven of the 10 bouts in a 26-13 dual win over the Maryland Terrapins. Three Hoosier underclassmen -- Cole Weaver (141), Bryce Martin (165), and Jake Masengale (197) -- earned their fist Big Ten dual wins of their young collegiate careers. "It was a hard-fought victory," said Indiana head coach Duane Goldman. "There were a lot of matches that stretched into overtime, or came right down to the end, but we knew it would be like that going in. We expected a dogfight, and we were in one." Masengale got the Hoosiers on the scoreboard early with a sudden-victory win at 197 lbs. The sophomore trailed 1-0 at the end of the second period, but recorded an escape and a takedown to take the lead. His opponent, Garret Wesneski, tied it up in the final seconds of the third period, but Masengale executed the final blow in sudden victory. The Hoosiers followed with two more wins, and a 12-0 lead, in the heavyweight and 125 lbs. bouts. Garret Goldman emerged on top of a 3-2 decision for his second consecutive Big Ten win. Elijah Oliver rebounded from his defeat against Penn State's No. 4 Nico Megaludis with a quick two-minute pin against Maryland's Mike Beck. "That loss made me realize a lot of things," Oliver said. "I'm still learning, and still progressing, and I know what it will take to bring it to a guy like that next time around." Cole Weaver came through with another come-from-behind victory for Indiana at 141 lbs. The freshman trailed 3-1 with 90 seconds remaining in the match, then surged with seven unanswered points before the final buzzer. Luke Blanton followed with an inspiring tiebreaker victory in the dual's sixth bout. He trailed 4-1 heading into the third round, but a stall point in his favor and a quick reversal tied the bout with 50 seconds remaining. Blanton kept Maryland's Wade Hodges on the mat, shaved Hodges' minute of riding time, and prevented a last-second escape attempt. Blanton went on to win the bout with five unanswered points in the tiebreaker period. "Luke Blanton is always gutsy," Goldman said. "I'm a huge Luke Blanton fan. He's got a lot of courage and he's a great competitor, and I had a lot of confidence in him in that match." Bryce Martin collected his first career Big Ten Dual win, a 7-5 sudden-victory win over Maryland's Brendan Burnham. Like Masengale, Weaver, and Blanton, Martin came from behind with a charge late in the third period, then secured the finalizing takedown. Sixth-ranked Nate Jackson put in another workmanlike performance to seal the dual win for Indiana. The Hoosier junior piled on the points for a 23-8 tech fall, his fifth this season, over Maryland's Josh Snook. Jackson is unbeaten against Big Ten competition in his 2015-16 campaign. The win gives Indiana their second Big Ten dual win for the first time since the 2009-10 season. While an individual sport by nature, the Hoosiers believe they've found a lot of their success through their team chemistry. "These guys go through blood, sweat, and tears together, and they're a close unit," Goldman said when asked about the galvanization of the team this season. "They compete hard not just to win, but also for their teammates. They believe in each other, and it makes a big difference. It's been very rewarding so far." EAST LANSING, Mich. -- No. 20 Purdue won seven bouts, including three with bonus points, in a 27-15 dual victory over Michigan State in Big Ten Conference action Friday in Jenison Field House. The Boilermakers powered through the middle of their lineup to pick up their first conference win of the season and move to 6-2 overall. The Spartans remained winless at 0-9, 0-4 B1G. "I thought we competed better in most of the situations we were in tonight," Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. "We definitely put more points on the board and that is an emphasis of ours." While the dual was taking place, Michigan State also held a gymnastics meet, in an event titled Tumbles & Takedowns. It created a non-traditional setting for wrestling, but Ersland was pleased with how his team responded. "It was different for us, but the distractions forced us to focus," Ersland said. "It's a positive for us, being able to go into an environment like that and have our guys perform because we'll have more hostile and loud crowds as the season progresses." Michigan State claimed two of the first three bouts, 125 and 141, to take a 9-3 lead. Luke Welch was credited with getting Purdue's first points on the board thanks to a 10-4 decision over Garth Yenter at 133. Four takedowns, an escape and 1:04 of riding time earned the redshirt sophomore his 11th win of the season. Alex Griffin needed only 5:00 to register a 17-0 technical fall for the first of a string of five straight wins for the Boilermakers. The 149-pounder scored 10 points in the opening period, tilting the Spartans' Kaelan Richards twice for a two-count and once for a four-count after the initial takedown. The Lafayette, Indiana, native picked up his ninth win and third shutout of the season. The ensuing match at 157 saw Doug Welch take MSU's Joe Johnson down in the first period, score a reversal in the third and accumulate 2:31 of riding time on his way to a 5-1 decision. With the win, Purdue took an 11-9 lead, it's first in the dual, into the break. The winning continued for the Boilermakers in the second half of weights. No. 6 Chad Welch used a nine-point third period to post a 13-4 major decision over Dean Vettese. The 165-pound redshirt senior lifted his record to 20-3, while pushing his team ahead 15-9. "I was glad to see Chad scoring points in other ways tonight," Ersland said. "Although he gave up the first takedown, he was able to recover and get on his leg attacks. He really got after it in the third with those attacks and ended up getting bonus points for us." A 5-2 decision from Jacob Morrissey (10-8) followed at 174 and the third bonus point win of the dual came via Tanner Lynde. The 184-pounder pinned Shwan Shadaia in 2:29 to clinch the dual for Purdue. Lynde's fall was the fifth of his career as he captured his first win in Big Ten dual action. "That was a great win for Tanner," Ersland said. "I like that he was strong and had purpose on top tonight. That's something we talked about this week, we want them to be aggressive on top. Tanner was determined to break [Shadaia] down from the top and he succeeded." Tyler Kral closed out the Boilermakers' efforts by winning his second straight match, a 6-0 decision over Dimitrius Renfroe for the eighth win of the season. Purdue returns home to Holloway Gymnasium on Sunday to take on Maryland (4-7, 1-4 B1G) at 1 p.m. ET. The Terrapins will make their first-ever trip to West Lafayette on the heels of a 26-13 loss at Indiana on Friday. #BoilerNotes • The win is Purdue's fifth straight in the Michigan State series … it is the Boilermakers' 26th overall in the series and they have now won a dozen times in East Lansing. • Purdue won its first Big Ten Conference road test of the season … it's the Boilermakers' first conference road win since an 18-16 win at Indiana on Jan. 31, 2014 … they are now 4-0 when wrestling on the road this season. • The Boilermakers had a 14-5 takedown advantage … they scored 20 back points with a pair of two-point nearfalls and four four-point nearfalls. • Alex Griffin won his 40th career match with the eighth technical fall of his career … he has now held 11 opponents scoreless in his three seasons … it was his third bonus point win of the season. • Fourteen of Chad Welch's 20 wins have been with bonus points (6 MD, 2TF, 6 F) … it was the 30th dual victory of his career and the 120th match he's wrestled in his Purdue career … he now has 31 career victories resulting in bonus points (10 MD, 5 TF, 16 F). • It was the 15th dual start for the Welch Trio (Luke - 133; Doug - 157; Chad - 165) dating to last season … it was the fifth time all three have won together this season and the seventh time overall.
