No. 17 Minnesota split its 10 matches with border rival Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon, but a tech fall by No. 3 Brett Pfarr at 197 pounds provided the bonus points the Gophers needed to knock off the Badgers, 17-16. The win completes a weekend road sweep for the Gophers and puts the squad two matches above .500 for the first time since early November, now 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. “There was great fight today,” said head coach J Robinson. “I thought that's what we did, we fought really good. That's a good thing. I like the fight. A lot of close matches and we fought in all of them. We just keep trying to get better and better each week. We have stuff to work on and it starts all over again next week.” Pfarr's tech fall came in the first match after halftime, a 17-2 win over Nic Veling that finished with a four-point near fall at the end of the second period. The win was Minnesota's only bonus point victory on the afternoon and came at a critical time for building momentum, catapulting Minnesota into the lead for the first time in the dual as the team's began the second half. No. 7 Michael Kroells built the lead further with a 7-2 decision over Brock Horwath, a strong performance in which Kroells did not surrender a takedown. Decisions at 125 and 133 pounds went against Skyler Petry and Sam Brancale, the latter a 7-3 loss to No. 7 Ryan Taylor, which brought Wisconsin back from down four to up two with one match remaining. With the dual's result depending on the winner of the 141 pound bout, No. 7 Tommy Thorn captured the victory for Minnesota in definitive fashion with a 6-0 shutout of Luke Rowh. After a scoreless first period, Thorn took down Rowh once in each of the final two periods to take the win and clinch the match for the Gophers. The afternoon began at 149 pounds, where No. 16 Jake Short was upset by Andrew Crone, 9-7, in overtime. Short's loss was the first of two overtime defeats for the Gophers in the first half of the dual. At 184 pounds, Chris Pfarr scored a late takedown against Ryan Christensen to tie their match at four, but Christensen scored a takedown in overtime countering a shot from Pfarr to win the match, 6-4. In between those overtime defeats, the Gophers earned victories at both 157 and 174 pounds. Brandon Kingsley got the Gophers on the board in dramatic fashion, erasing an early 6-0 deficit and allowing just one point over the last two-plus periods of the match to defeat TJ Ruschell, 13-7. Kingsley is now 2-0 lifetime against Ruschell. At 174, Nick Wanzek defeated Ricky Robertson, 5-2. Wanzek did not allow a take down to either of his opponents over the weekend. Wanzek and Kingsley's wins bookended a loss at 165 pounds, where Wisconsin native Brad Dolezal wrestled up a weight for the third consecutive dual. Dolezal fell to No. 3 Isaac Jordan, 13-4, giving the Badgers their only bonus point of the day. With Sunday's win, Minnesota has now won four straight and seven of its last eight against Wisconsin. Overall, the Gophers have won back-to-back matches and four of their last five. Minnesota wraps up its Big Ten season this coming Friday when the team heads to Champaign to take on Illinois. ITHACA, N.Y. - The No. 4 Oklahoma State wrestling team continues its winning ways as the Cowboys took out No. 15 Cornell, 32-12, in a dual that was highlighted by a huge upset at 184 pounds, where No. 16 Nolan Boyd knocked off defending NCAA champion and top-ranked Gabe Dean. Boyd handed No. 1 Dean his first loss of the season after an impressive second period that saw Boyd score nine points to take a substantial lead that Dean could not overcome. The win was Boyd's third career win over a top-five opponent and second of the season. Overall, the Cowboys (10-2, 6-0 Big 12) won seven of the day's 10 matches, including two pins and two major decisions. "Overall, it was a good effort from our team," coach John Smith said. "It wasn't perfect. There were some disappointments, but the bonus points we got and a nice win from Boyd just created a pretty good mood of what we did today." The dual started with a Big Red forfeit at 125 pounds and six team points for the Pokes. It will go down as Eddie Klimara's 98th career win. Top-ranked Nahshon Garrett, a senior for Cornell, closed the team-score gap with a technical fall over Gary Wayne Harding, giving the Pokes just a 6-5 lead. Dean Heil, ranked No. 1 at 141 pounds, extended the Cowboys' lead with bonus points over Mark Grey. Heil maintained control throughout the match, picking up three takedowns and earning a full-period ride en route to a 9-1 major decision. No. 13 Anthony Collica followed up with an impressive performance at 149 pounds that saw him pick up five quick takedowns before sticking Joey Galasso in 2:44. Collica improves to 19-6 on the year. "I felt good out there," Collica said. "It's coming together, but I still have some work to do." True freshman Joe Smith, ranked No. 6, suffered his first dual loss as he fell in a scrappy 7-3 bout to No. 12 Dylan Palacio at 157 pounds. Top-ranked Alex Dieringer now holds a 70-match win streak after a first-period pin over No. 15 Duke Pickett in 1:18. It was Dieringer's eighth pin of the season and his 21st bonus-point win this year. The Pokes suffered a major decision loss at 174 pounds as Chandler Rogers stepped into the lineup to take on sixth-ranked Brian Realbuto in their second meeting of the season. But the Cowboys responded, rattling off three wins to close out the dual. After Boyd's big win at 184 pounds, Preston Weigel made his fourth start and picked up his third dual win of the season, defeating Owen Scott in a 2-0 bout. EDINBORO, Pa. - The 10th-ranked Hokies defeated Edinboro 29-7 on Sunday, completing consecutive undefeated weekends after Friday's win over 17th-ranked Pittsburgh. Tech moved to 13-2 on the season, sitting in second place in the ACC, one victory behind NC State. The Hokies will face off against the Wolfpack next Friday in Raleigh, N.C. No. 14 Zack Zavatsky picked up a huge upset victory at 184 pounds, downing second-ranked Vic Avery 3-1 in sudden victory overtime. Eleventh-ranked freshman David McFadden also took his match into overtime, picking up a clutch takedown to win 6-4. Dennis Gustafson put the Hokies on the board first, starting the afternoon with a 15-0 technical fall for a 5-0 lead. Solomon Chishko followed with a strong performance, recording a 14-4 major decision. Two more VT grapplers, seventh-ranked Jared Haught and third-ranked Zach Epperly, also scored bonus victories, dominating their opponents 13-2 and 10-2, respectively. The Hokies closed the afternoon with victories from Ty Walz and Joey Dance. Walz won a 5-3 decision against Billy Miller and Dance dominated from the outset on his way to a 6-2 win. ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling team picked up its fifth-straight dual victory with a 25-13 win over Old Dominion Sunday at the Convocation Center. The Bobcats won six of the 10 dual matches including wins by decision, major decision, technical fall and disqualification. Prior to the match, Ohio celebrated the 200th career victory by head coach Joel Greenlee which he picked up last weekend at his alma mater Northern Iowa and also celebrated senior day. "I think it means a lot to our seniors to finish their careers on a high note in the Convocation Center," said Greenlee. "In the big picture, we are doing the right things this season and we are headed in the right direction as a program improving every week. I thought it was a great performance from top to bottom for us." "I was shocked, I had no idea I had reached 200 wins," said Greenlee. "Its something I am proud of but not because of me, we have had great assistant coaches during the time I have been here and great guys that have wrestled for us while I have been here. I think it just speaks to the quality of student-athletes we have here and that's why its so special to me." 149 - Nick Steen vs. Alexander Richardson In the first match of the day at 149 pounds, Nick Steed (Canton, Ohio) fell to eighth-ranked Alexander Richardson. Richardson executed an early takedown and took a 2-0 lead into the middle frame. After keeping Steed down throughout the second period, Richardson sealed the victory with a second takedown less than a minute into the final frame and gave up a late escape point en route to a 6-1 victory. 157 - Spartak Chino v. Austin Eads Although the match started slowly with a stalemates through much of the first two periods, senior 157-pounder redshirt senior Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) made the most out of the last 45-seconds of action in match against Old Dominion's Austin Eads. Chino, who led 2-0 after an escape and earning a point by excessive stalling from Eads, landed a power double to score two then came within milliseconds of a pin fall, earning a four-point near fall. Chino took a major-decision shutout, 8-0, win to put Ohio up 4-3 in the dual. 165 pounds - Austin Reese vs. Seldon Wright In the 165 bout, Redshirt freshman Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio) defeated Seldon Wright in a 5-2 decision. After the wrestlers traded failed takedown attempts in the opening period, Reese notched an early escape in the second frame to take a 1-0 lead. With less than a minute left in the second period, Wright took a quick 2-1 lead on a takedown before Reese escaped right before time expired to knot things up at 2-2. With just over a minute to play, Reese took Wright down for the second time in the match to seal the victory. He was also rewarded an additional point for riding time to bring the final to 5-2. Reese improves his record to 17-8 and 9-4 in dual matches. 174 - No. 9 Cody Walters v. Tyrell Forbes Redshirt senior Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) dominated from the get go and scored points easily en route to picking up a disqualification win via excessive stalling, 13-0, over Tyrell Forbes of Old Dominion. Walters landed a quick takedown in the first period on a single leg takedown and chased Forbes out of bounds. Cody then earned a two-point near fall after the reset starting in the top position. After earning his first point due to stalling by Forbes, Walters led 5-0 after the first. In the second, Cody nearly landed a takedown off the start but landed out of bounds. On the neutral restart, Cody got another takedown on a single-leg and a trip and dominated the frame from the top taking a 7-0 lead into the third period. In the third, Walters earned four more points on stalling calls and landed a reversal for two-more points before earning the DQ win and taking a 13-3 lead for the Bobcats. 184 - Andrew Romanchik vs. No. 5 Jack Dechow In the matchup at 184 pounds, fifth-ranked Jack Dechow defeated redshirt senior Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) in an 8-0 decision. Dechow grabbed his permanent lead late in the first period with a takedown and added an escape early in the second to bring the score to 3-0 heading into the third period. Dechow managed to keep Romanchik down throughout the final period and was rewarded five points at the buzzer for a near fall and riding time. 197 - No. 13 Phil Wellington v. Kaleab Fetahi Redshirt senior Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) cruised to a 21-8 major decision win for the Bobcats. Wellington landed a single-leg and a trip for a two-point takedown. Wellington dominated the first period and got a point for Fetahi stalling to take a 3-0 lead in the first. In the second, Wellington started down and got a one-point escape easily from the opening position. Wellington immediately went for a single-leg which he landed and then let Fetahi up to immediately land a double-leg to take a 8-1 lead after two-periods. In the third, it was a steady formula of Wellington landing takedowns and letting Fetahi up to land another. Wellington landed six takedowns in the final frame and earned riding time to take a 21-8 major decision victory. 285 - Jesse Webb vs. Austin Coburn In the heavyweight match, Austin Coburn defeated sophomore Jesse Webb (Bennington, Vt.) in a 4-0 decision. Coburn seized the early momentum with a takedown in the opening frame. The wrestlers started the middle period in the neutral position and traded failed takedown attempts throughout the frame. Coburn, who started down, added a quick escape point in the third period and was awarded an additional point after an illegal head butt by Webb. 125 - Shakur Laney v. Brandon Jeske In the 125-pound matchup, freshman Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) hit a near fall in the final seconds of action to take a 7-5 decision from ODU's Brandon Jeske. After a very active scramble after a short feeling out period, Jeske landed a takedown in a scramble. Laney landed a two-point reversal after the reset and ODU landed an escape for a very close spirited opening frame. Jeske took a 3-2 lead into the second. In the second, Laney landed an escape to even the score in the second, 3-3. In the third, Jeske hit an escape to take a one-point lead after Laney erased the riding time advantage. Laney then hit a takedown and near fall to steal the win and give Ohio a 20-10 advantage. 133 - No. 14 Cameron Kelly vs. Josh Markham Freshman Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) extended his win streak to seven matches with a 15-0 victory via technical fall over Josh Markham. Kelly took an early 2-0 lead in the first minute with a takedown and kept Markham at bay throughout the rest of the opening frame. Kelly quickly took control in the second period by turning an escape into a quick takedown to take a 5-0 lead. He executed nearly back-to-back-to-back near falls to end the match and bring his lead to 15-0 just 1:03 into the second period. With the victory, the true freshman improves his record to 19-5 and 12-1 in dual matches. 141 - Noah Forrider v. Chris Mecate In the finale of the Dual, Ohio sophomore Noah Forrider (Marysville, Ohio) battled No. 13 Chris Mecate of ODU. Through the first period, it was a feeling out process for both wrestlers with takedown attempts from each, but neither was able to score a point ending with a 0-0 tie. In the second, Mecate earned an escape and a takedown with just 20-seconds left in the frame to take a 3-0 lead into the third. Forrider earned an escape but was unable to score any points dropping a 3-1 decision. BOISE, Idaho -- South Dakota State won the first seven matches and eight total en route to a 32-9 victory over Boise State in a college wrestling dual Sunday afternoon. The Jackrabbit victory was the team's 11th consecutive dual win, tying a school record first set during the 1972-73 season and matched in 1985-86. The Jackrabbits, who improved to 12-5 overall, used a late takedown from David Kocer in the opening bout of the day to get on the board. Kocer's 4-3 decision over Austin Dewey was one of three matches in which SDSU scored in the final 30-plus seconds to win a bout. Heavyweight Alex Macki, a 5-4 winner over Harley DiLulo, and 125-pounder Ben Gillette also pulled out late victories for the Jackrabbits. Gillette rallied for an 8-6 decision over Rami Haddadin. SDSU received pins from 15th-ranked Nate Rotert at 197 pounds and 141-pounder Seth Gross to eventually build the team score to 29-0 through seven matches. Brady Ayers and 184 pounds and 133-pounder Brance Simms each tallied wins by major decision. Boise State broke the Jackrabbit run in the 149-pound weight class, where nationally ranked Geordan Martinez scored a 7-5 decision over Alex Kocer. SDSU forfeited the 157-pound bout, but Luke Zilverberg returned to the starting lineup at 165 pounds and outscored Taylor West 5-1 in the final period for a 10-6 decision in the final match of the day. DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Citadel wrestling team defeated Southern Conference member Davidson on Sunday 28-16 in Davidson, North Carolina. With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the SoCon. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead behind a pin by Marshall Haas at 197 pounds and an 11-4 decision by Joe Bexley (13-12, 3-3 SoCon). Haas (22-9, 6-0) picked up his fourth pin this season over Davidson's Michael Moore in 1:26. The Wildcats got back into the mix at 125 after winning by pin and then by a 5-3 sudden-victory decision at 133 pounds tying the score at 9-9. Ty Bucksio (18-11, 5-0) put The Citadel back on top at 141 pounds after pinning Billy McClelland in 4:11 to make the score 15-9 with five weight classes remaining. Senior Matt Frisch added to the Bulldogs' lead at 149 after defeating Aidan Conroy by a 9-0 major decision. Frisch is now 19-8 overall and 4-2 in SoCon duals. At 157 pounds, Aaron Walker continued to dominate as he defeated Tony Palumbo by fall in 3:50. The junior has not lost since Jan. 2nd and has the best record on the team at 23-5. With the pin, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 25-9. Davidson earned four points in the 165 bout after winning by a 13-4 major decision making the score 25-13 with just two matches remaining. Freshman Tim Knipl (11-18, 2-4) sealed the win for the 'Dogs after winning by a 6-2 decision at 174 pounds over the Wildcats' Nathaniel Powers. In the last matchup of the day, Chandler Sambets made his debut at 184 pounds. The sophomore kept things close but eventually dropped the match by a 5-1 decision making the final score 28-16 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs return home for two duals over the next two weeks. The Citadel takes on Chattanooga Feb. 12th for its last SoCon dual of the season at 6 p.m. inside McAlister Field House. For the third straight Ivy League contest, Princeton entered the final match of the night in need of a victory. The Tigers have hit the trifecta in those opportunities, including a 21-16 victory over Brown Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Jonathan Schleifer, the 16th-ranked wrestler in the nation, clinched the team win with a third-period takedown of Andrew LaBrie in a 9-6 win at 174. Schleifer, whose overtime win Saturday set up Abram Ayala's clincher, added a riding time point for the 9-6 win. Princeton won seven of the 10 matches in the dual, but Brown stayed close because of bonus points and an unfortunate injury default at 149; Tiger senior Chris Perez, who overcame one major injury after another before reaching the EIWA final last year, was forced to default from his match after another injury. Brown followed that with two wins, including a 7-6 victory by 20th-ranked Justin Staudenmayer over Adam Krop, but Schleifer never allowed Brown to get the lead. He grabbed the early lead over LaBrie, but he allowed a takedown midway through the match that ignited the Brown bench. Tied at 5-5, Schleifer was able to get deep on a leg and finish the takedown, which ultimately moved Princeton to 3-0 in the Ivy League. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Trailing late in the dual, the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team used bonus wins, including back-to-back first-period pins in the final two weights, to blow past No. 12 Rutgers, 27-16, on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 7) at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The Wolverines won six individual bouts, earning bonus points in four, to improve to 7-1 in Big Ten competition. After Rutgers surged to take a 16-10 lead in the dual on three straight wins at the middleweights, including back-to-back bonus points of its own at 165 and 174 pounds, the Wolverines' upperweight captains responded in a big way, earning 17 points in the final three bouts to close out the meet. Junior Domenic Abounader, ranked fourth in the latest InterMat poll, kicked off the rally with a 16-0 technical fall against Anthony Pafumi at 184 pounds, scoring three takedowns and adding eight back points -- first off a second-period leg turk then on a third-period power half that ended the match at the 6:23 mark. Abounader improved to 13-0 in dual competition. Graduate student Max Huntley, ranked sixth nationally, put the Wolverines back out front with a quick fall against Hayden Hrymack at the 2:09 mark in the 197-pound bout. Huntley converted on two takedowns in the first, dumping Hrymack to his butt on the latter and using a hand turk to quacking secure the fall -- his sixth of the season. Like Abounader, he improved to 13-0 in duals this season. Junior heavyweight Adam Coon, ranked fourth nationally, earned his pin even quick, tossing 13th-ranked Billy Smith to stick the Scarlet Knight wrestler on the edge at 2:09. Coon had just missed on a couple throw opportunities earlier in the period before making it count. It was his fifth pin and second of the weekend. He is a perfect 14-0 this season. The Wolverines needed extra time to open the dual with a pair of wins at the lowerweights. After just missing on several leg attacks during regulation, senior/junior Conor Youtsey edged 20th-ranked Sean McCabe, 3-1, on a single leg just seconds into the sudden-victory period at 124 pounds. Senior Rossi Bruno beat 17th-ranked Anthony Giraldo, 4-2, in the 133-pound tiebreaker, taking advantage the second stall warning and third caution called on Giraldo in quick succession in the tiebreaker. He added an escape and held on for the win. After sophomore/freshman Zac Hall dropped a close 2-0 decision to eighth-ranked Anthony Ashnault at 141 pounds -- on a second-period rideout and third-period escape -- the Wolverines earned their first bonus win of the meet with sophomore Alec Pantaleo's 14-5 major decision against Tyson Dippery at 149 pounds. Pantaleo jumped out to a sizable lead with a double-leg takedown and four-point suck back in the first and, after giving up two near fall in the second, blew open the bout with three takedowns in the third. He rode out the match on the last one, accumulating 1:01 in riding-time advantage. Rutgers claimed the next three bouts, including a 3-2 upset at 157 pounds, where 17th-ranked Richie Lewis used a late single leg to defeat ninth-ranked junior Brian Murphy. The Scarlet Knights earned a major decision and pin in the subsequent two matches, taking a 16-10 lead and setting up the Wolverines' big comeback at the upperweights. The Wolverines will wrap the Big Ten dual season next Friday (Feb. 12), hosting Purdue at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Michigan will honor its senior class prior to the dual. FAIRFAX, Va.- George Mason University's wrestling team dominated Bloomsburg from very start of the dual, winning by the score of 38-4. The Patriots only dropped one match on the day. The dual started at the 141 pound weight division and redshirt freshman Tejon Anthony(141) was able to set the tone with his aggressive wrestling style. Anthony ended up winning by technical fall 3:32 into the match, 18-3. After a forfeit in the 149 pound weight division, Mason's redshirt senior captain Greg Flournoy(157) won a hard fought match, 5-3. Flournoy gained his fifth point for riding time after refusing to let his opponent from Bloomsburg get an escape point in the third period, which could have potentially tied the match at 4 apiece. Redshirt junior Patrick Davis(165) produced a quick takedown and won by fall as he pinned his opponent only 1:18 into the match. Following Davis' strong performance, redshirt sophomore Daniel Mika earned his first win of the season for the Patriots with a tightly contested win by decision, 6-4. Redshirt junior Luke Ludke produced another win for Mason, however, the Patriot needed overtime to decide the match. In overtime, Ludke got a takedown and won decision 3-1. Redshirt freshman Matt Voss(HWT) gave Mason another win by decision, 5-3. The win gave Voss 20 wins on the season, an impressive mark for the Patriot wrestler's first season. In the final match of the dual after a second Bloomsburg forfeit, coming at the 125 pound weight division, redshirt senior captain Vince Rodriguez(133) broke out of his recent slump to win by decision, 6-1. Rodriguez had lost two straight matches and got back on track with a confidence building win. Mason finishes the week with a 1-1 record and will try and carry over the momentum from two solid performances against Franklin & Marshall and Bucknell next Saturday, at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively. The University of Wyoming wrestling team used bonus points in six matches in a 37-7 win over Northern Colorado on Saturday evening in the UniWyo Sports Complex. The 37 team points was Wyoming's highest team score of the season. Saturday night's win also marked the Cowboys' 50th win against the Bears in a series that dates back to 1932. “I thought we wrestled pretty well as a team,” UW head coach Mark Branch said. “We were very aggressive, yet a little sloppy at times. We got off to a slow start and we controlled what we could control.” The Pokes were aggressive all night earning a pair matches by fall, two matches by major decision and capping the night with a technical fall and a major decision. The Cowboys opened the dual with five-straight wins as UW improves to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in Big 12 duals. The Bears fell to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in Big 12 action. “Archie (Colgan) had some really nice takedowns and had some nice shots in an aggressive in the opening period,” Branch said. “When you see more aggression you see more sloppiness, but it is better than what we saw a few weeks ago.” Sophomore Luke Paine opened the dual with a 10-6 decision over Tyler Kinn. Paine battled back in the matches' final period earning a four-point nearfall with 10 seconds left in the match to give the Pokes a 3-0 dual lead. Junior Benjamin Stroh picked up his third major decision win of the season with a 10-1 tally over Tanner Davis. He took control of the match with a takedown and two-point nearfall in the second period to advance the UW lead to 7-0. Stroh recorded over four minutes of riding time. Junior Brandon Tribble earned bonus points in a dual for the first time this season with his 11-3 win over Tommy Chisholm. He dominated the match with over three minutes of riding time and used a takedown and two-point nearfall to earn the major decision and give the Cowboys an 11-0 dual lead. Senior Tanner Harms continued his solid wrestling with a pin of Jack Kuck at 5:31 of the match. He improved to 8-1 on the season against members of the Big 12. Harms has also won five-straight matches. Junior Drew Templeman gave UW a 22-0 dual lead with his 16-0 technical fall win over Jesse Reed. He finished the match with a four-point nearfall and a pair of two-point nearfalls for his second technical fall win of the season. The Bears earned their first win of the dual to make the matchup 22-4 after freshman Drake Foster fell by major decision to Rico Montoya. Sophomore Bryce Meredith wasted little time extending the Cowboys lead to 28-4 with a pin of Ben Polkowske at 4:31 of the match. It was his 10th dual win of the season and his seventh-consecutive win. He leads the Cowboys in dual points with 43 on season. Junior Cole Mendenhall picked up a 17-13 decision over Nick Adams to make the dual 31-4 UW. Mendenhall had a strong opening period with five takedowns. Junior Archie Colgan won the Cowboys' final match of the night with an injury default win over Eleazar De Luca in a match that was pivotal to Big 12 tournament rankings. “We need to figure some things out and figure what team we will bring to Kansas City and we will use the next dual to figure that out” Branch said. “We have good period of time to train ourselves physically and really get healthy.” The Cowboys return to action next Saturday night with a 7 p.m. dual in the UniWyo Sports Complex against Utah Valley. No. 19 Kent State (13-3, 6-1 MAC) erased a 10-0 deficit in a 22-13 win over Northern Iowa Saturday Night at West Gymnasium. The Golden Flashes extended their winning streak to seven by capturing seven straight bouts in the first program win against the Panthers. "I couldn't be more proud of our guys," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "They are doing all the right things to prepare themselves, and it's paying off. We keep finding ways to win." An injury to Mack McGuire (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) Friday night forced the Flashes to forfeit 133. With his team trailing 10-0 after two bouts, Anthony Tutolo gave Kent State a boost with an 8-7 comeback victory over Tyler Willers. Tutolo trailed 4-0 to start the match, but evened things up at 5-5 at the end of the second. Willers escaped to take a brief lead (6-5), but Tutolo converted his second takedown of the match and secured riding time. "Anthony has had some struggles in the first period, but we knew if he could weather the storm, he could give himself a chance to win it in the third," Andrassy said. "Their guy used up a lot of his juice in the first and Anthony just chipped away." Mike DePalma (Jeannette, Pa.) racked up 3:32 of riding time on his way to an 8-0 major decision over Adam Perrin. DePalma scored takedowns in all three periods. Ian Miller (Oak Harbor, Ohio) tied the dual up 10-10 with a 9-4 decision over Bryce Steiert. "But when we have the better wrestler and stick to our technique, it pays off. Tyler was a good example of that. He had a bad first period and outwrestled him the rest of the way." Jairod James (Bedford, Ohio) improved to 2-0 in dual meets this season with a 5-2 decision over Kyle Lux. James secured takedowns in the first and third periods for the Flashes fifth consecutive win of the night. Senior Cole Baxter (Butler, Pa.) came through with a pair of clutch takedowns in a 7-5 sudden victory win over Drew Foster. Baxter scored a takedown in the final 10 seconds of the third to force overtime and tallied another takedown 30 seconds into sudden victory. "Cole outscrambled his guy at the edge to tie it up," Andrassy said. "And he just kept attacking in overtime." Conel went to work in the first with a pair of takedowns and sealed his win with a reversal in the third. PROVIDENCE -- A road trip was just what the University of Pennsylvania needed. One week after two tough performances close to home, the Quakers swept a pair of Ivy League and EIWA meets with victories at Brown (25-9) and Harvard (26-9). The Red and Blue won a total of 14 matches in the two duals, and secured bonus points in five to improve to 5-3 this season and 2-1 inside the Ivy League. Five Quakers - Caleb Richardson, C.J. Cobb, Casey Kent, Lorenzo Thomas and Patrik Garren won both their matches in the dual meet. The Quakers never trailed against Brown, but needed bonus points from their big guns late to put an exclamation point on the win. And what an exclamation point it was. No. 12 Lorenzo Thomas worked his way through a scoreless first period against Austin Pfarr, and reversed Pfarr to his back early in the second period for a 6-0 lead. Moments later, Thomas worked an arm bar into a cradle and pinned Pfarr at 3:57. The fall for Thomas followed up a major decision from No. 15 Casey Kent at 174 pounds. Kent had four takedowns in the match, scoring the final two in the third period to secure the major decision. Kent was dominant in the match, working hard for turns and racking up 4:46 of riding time. Overall, Penn won seven bouts in the dual meet. Frank Mattiace returned to the lineup at 197 pounds after missing the last month with injury. Mattiace was ready to go in the first period, scoring two takedowns and building a 4-1 lead. In the end, Mattiace was able to use the riding time point for a 7-6 decision over Augustus Marker. Patrik Garren followed with a 12-8 win at heavyweight in a match that he was in control of the entire way with five takedowns. After a 3-2 loss for Jeremy Schwartz at 125 pounds, Caleb Richardson gave Penn a 9-3 lead with an 8-3 decision at 133. Richardson scored two takedowns in the first period against Zeke Salvo, and added a third in the final period for the win. Marc Mastropietro was edged at 141, 3-2, by Charlie Banaszak to cut into Penn's lead, but the Red and Blue would win four of the final five matches to cruise to the win. No. 12 C.J. Cobb needed overtime to defeat Steven Galliardo, 6-4, but rallied after a late escape from Galliardo with 0:02 on the clock forced overtime. In sudden victory, Cobb re-shot in for the winning score with 15 seconds remaining. No. 20 Justin Staudenmayer used his 1:12 of riding time to edge May Bethea, 2-1, at 157 pounds to once again bring Brown within three points. Brooks Martino came through with a gutty win for his team with a 9-6 decision over Jon Viruet at 165 pounds. Martino battled through a first period which saw Viruet attempt a headlock throw only for Martino to land out of bounds. Martino would then win a scramble for a takedown but saw Viruet score one of his own for a 3-3 tie after one. In the second, Viruet tried an arm drag but ran out of room only to score on a cradle. Martino would escape and counter with a takedown of his own before the period completed for a 6-6 score after two periods. In the third, a Martino escape gave him the lead and a takedown in the final 10 seconds secured the win. In the nightcap, the Quakers did themselves one better with a 26-9 win. Wins at the upperweights helped the Red and Blue secure the dual meet, including a major from May Bethea and tech falls from Casey Kent and Lorenzo Thomas. The dual started with a 3-2 decision from Caleb Richardson over Jeffrey Ott at 133 pounds. Richardson scored the bout's only takedown in the first period, and an escape in the third was the difference. After Marc Mastropietro was unable to knock off No. 9 Todd Preston in a 3-1 defeat, No. 12 C.J. Cobb got Penn back in the win column with a 12-5 decision over Patrik Hogan. Cobb had three takedowns in the bout and added two points of nearfall. Bethea dominated Tyler Tarsi for a 19-8 major decision, scoring six takedowns and adding four backpoints. At 165, No. 20 Devon Gobbo held on to stave off Brooks Martino, 6-4. No. 15 Casey Kent did not concede a point in a 15-0 tech fall win over Josef Johnson. LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 3 NC State wrestling team gutted out a 19-15 road win at No. 8 Nebraska Saturday night, improving the Wolfpack to a perfect 21-0 on the season. The win was also the seventh versus a ranked opponent this season - including road wins now at No. 4 Oklahoma State (19-15) and tonight at No. 11 Nebraska. We showed a lot of physical and mental toughness tonight in getting this road win. "Sean Fausz's win (at 125 pounds) over a highly ranked wrestler really made the difference tonight. Redshirt freshman Sean Fausz followed up with the top upset for the Pack of the night, as he downed No. 9 Tim Lambert 5-4. After Fausz rode Lambert the entire second period, he scored a reversal, and with the ride time point clinched the bout. The win was his third against a ranked foe this year, and his first career versus a top-10 opponent. The Pack took its first lead at 9-6. Nebraska tied it up with a decision at 133, but the Pack won three of the next four matches and clinched the dual victory going into the final bout. The Pack's decisive stretch started with No. 3 Kevin Jack picking up his 12th straight win and defeating No. 19 Anthony Abidin, 7-1, being the aggressor throughout at 141 pounds and put the Pack ahead 12-9. Nebraska tied it once again after a decision at 149 pounds made the score 12-12 with three matches left. No. 4 Max Rohskopf clinched the victory for the Pack with his 4-1 win over No. 14 Austin Wilson at 165 pounds. After a scoreless first, Rohskopf started the second on top and scored a two-point near-fall and added an escape and stall in the third for the win. With the win, Rohskopf improves to a perfect 11-0 at 165 pounds this season, his lone loss was when he wrestled up at Oklahoma State. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A pin at 174 pounds proved to be the difference for CSU Bakersfield as the Roadrunners and Oregon State wrestled to a 20-20 score in a Pac-12 dual Saturday night at Bakersfield's Centennial High School. The ‘Runners were awarded the dual victory, 21-20, by the first criteria, most six-point victories. The dual which was held at Bakersfield's Centennial High School, began at 125 pounds where No. 6 Ronnie Bresser of the Beavers defeated Sergio Mendez by a 11-5 count. Joey Palmer picked up a major decision for Oregon State at 133 when he defeated Carlos Herrera 17-4. Ian Nickell got the Roadrunners on the board at 141 pounds when he posted a 6-2 win against Jack Hathaway. Coleman Hammond nearly tied the match for the Roadrunners at 149, but his 7-0 victory over Joey Delgado only gave CSUB three teams points. With the Beavers leading 7-6, Abraham Rodriguez recorded a major decision over AJ Fierro 157 to push the OSU lead to five. Adam Fierro made it a one-point dual once again in the 165-pound bout when he beat Kenneth Lanteri 9-1. No. 7 Bryce Hammond put the Roadrunners into the lead for the first time when he pinned Tyler Chay with 44 seconds remaining in the 174-pound match. The victory for the Roadrunners was the first by CSUB in the series since Jan. 18, 2008 when the ‘Runners defeated the Beavers 21-19. The win was the first by CSUB in the city of Bakersfield since Dec. 12, 1998 when the Roadrunners defeated Oregon State (8-6, 2-2 Pac-12) 22-16. PHILADELPHIA -- The Drexel wrestling team swept its doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall and Rider at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday on their way to a three-win weekend. Austin Rose secured a crucial pin with seven seconds left in the final match against Rider to give Drexel their second team victory of the day. On the weekend, Rose tallied two pins and a technical fall at 165. Zack Fuentes, Matthew Cimato, Stephen Loiseau, and Joey Goodhart each had three individual wins over the two days, while freshman Mike Comunale earned two wins in two appearances. The first dual of the day started off with the 174 match as Nick Elmer earned an 8-2 decision over Franklin & Marshall's Gordon Bolig to put the Dragons on the board. Loiseau followed at 184 with a technical fall 4:47 into the match against Anthony Mancini to put Drexel ahead 8-0 early. Joshua Murphy added an 18-7 major decision at 197 to give the Dragons a 12-0 advantage just three matches in. In the heavyweight match, Goodhart and Antonio Pelusi were knotted up at 2-2 as time wound down in the third period but Goodhart was able to hold on to earn the riding time point and walk away with a 3-2 victory. Then as the lightweight matches began, Fuentes came out and earned an 8-3 win over the Diplomats' Aaron Moldoff at 125 to give the Dragons an 18-0 lead. Franco Ferraina had a hard-fought match at 133 that came down to the wire. Tied at 3-3 to start the third period, Ferraina got an escape to take a 4-3 lead but Franklin & Marshall's Scott Stevens quickly came back with a reversal to go ahead, 5-4. With under 15 seconds remaining and riding time in Stevens' favor, Ferraina tied it up with an escape and then secured a crucial takedown with five seconds left to ultimately earn a 7-6 victory. The 141 match would mark the only time the Diplomats were able to score throughout the dual. Kevin Devoy Jr. was knotted up, 4-4, with the 12th-ranked Rick Durso in the third period, but riding time ultimately gave Franklin & Marshall a 5-4 win. No. 11 Cimato picked the Dragons up with a 12-1 major decision at 149 and then Comunale earned his second win of the weekend with an 8-2 decision over Michael Marano at 157. Rose finished the Dragons off with a win-by-fall at 1:28 in the 165 match to give Drexel a 34-3 team victory over Franklin & Marshall. Rider came in as the Dragons' second opponent of the day and the dual again began with the 174 match. Curt Delia started the Broncs off with an 8-1 decision over Elmer to put them on the board first, but then Loiseau edged Michale Fagg-Daves, 1-0 in the next match to even the team score. Rider would take the lead again as Ryan Wolfe earned a 14-3 major over Murphy at 197. Trailing 7-3, Goodhart came up with a 4-1 win in the heavyweight match to cut Rider's advantage to 7-6. Then Fuentes picked up a 3-0 decision at 125 to give Drexel its first lead of the day, 9-7. At 133 Rider's Rob Deutsch put the Broncs ahead again with a 6-3 decision over David Pearce, but then Devoy would take back the Drexel lead with a late, come-from-behind 5-3 victory over Rider's Paul Kirchner. Leading 12-10, Cimato worked hard to keep the advantage in Drexel's favor. Faced with Rider's No. 15 B.J. Clagon, Cimato led 3-2 at the start of the third period. Clagon was able to secure a late takedown to take a 4-3 lead, but Cimato was awarded a riding time point that forced overtime. Neither wrestler scored in sudden victory, but in the first tie-breaker Cimato earned a crucial takedown and was able to hold on and walk away with a 6-4 overtime win that extended the Dragons' lead to 15-10 with just two matches to go. 157 was a hard fought match by Richard Viruet but ultimately Rider's No. 14 Chad Walsh earned a 10-2 major that put the Broncs within one point of the Dragons on the team score, 15-14. With the fate of the Dragons' outcome in Rose's hands, the redshirt sophomore trailed Rider's No. 19 Conor Brennan, 4-3 with short time remaining. With 11 seconds left in regulation, Rose secured a big takedown that turned into a pin count and ultimately resulted in a win-by-fall with just seven seconds left in the match. This pin gave Drexel more than it needed to earn its second victory of the day and walk away with a weekend sweep. With the wins, the Dragons improve to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in EIWA competition. Franklin & Marshall moves to 3-12, 0-8 EIWA, while Rider moves to 9-9, 4-2 EWL. For a split second, it seemed Josef Johnson was poised to break the hearts of Tiger Nation. Perhaps this team was too young, perhaps it just wasn't ready for the moment. Fortunately, a split second later, the dream was alive and well. Two weeks, two heart-stopping matches, and two New Jersey state champions who posted dramatic victories to keep Princeton perfect in the Ivy League race. One week after freshman Pat D'Arcy's decision to clinch a 19-15 win over Penn, sophomore Jonathan Schleifer ducked under a takedown attempt in overtime and scored a 3-1 victory to lead Princeton to a 19-16 win over Harvard. Schleifer's win evened the team score at 16-16, and set up senior Abram Ayala to finish the job. The two-time NCAA qualifier dominated the legs of Michael Mocco for four takedowns en route to a clinching 19-16 victory in Boston. "I remember fighting really hard to not give up position, and to come out on top," Schleifer said. Princeton ended up on top, but it was a wild journey getting there. The Tigers won the first three matches of the day, starting with a 6-4 victory for 11th-ranked Brett Harner. Junior heavyweight Ray O'Donnell followed his Penn win with a 5-0 victoryover Angus Cowell, and D'Arcy continued his strong rookie season with a 2-1 victory at 125; the winning point for D'Arcy came via riding time, as he controlled Nolan Hellickson for the majority of the second period. "Pat really showed how tough he can be," Schleifer said. "He stayed offensive and kept good position the entire match despite the high stakes and close score." The Princeton momentum was short-lived, as Harvard bounced back with three wins of its own. A pin at 133 and a major decision by former All-American Todd Preston at 141 set up a 3-2 win for Patrick Hogan and a 13-9 Crimson lead. Princeton senior Adam Krop provided a much-needed 12-0 major decision at 157. He scored a takedown in the first and followed with four back points to grab control, and he never let up the rest of the match. Harvard reclaimed the lead when 20th-ranked Devon Gobbo scored a 10-4 decision; at that point, Harvard led 16-13 and needed only one more win to grab the team victory. Schleifer was up first, and he and Johnson went seven minutes without a takedown. That set up the overtime and the dramatic final takedown, which you can see above. That win, plus Ayala's clincher, sends Princeton into a Super Sunday showdown at Brown (1 pm, Ivy League Digital Network) with a chance to keep the dreams of a Championship Saturday against Cornell alive. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- No. 6 Lehigh extended its dual win streak to 10 and clinched its first unbeaten dual season against EIWA opponents in six years as the Mountain Hawks defeated American 32-8 Saturday inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks won eight weight classes with three bonus wins plus a forfeit to improve to 12-1 overall on the dual season. With a 7-0 dual mark against EIWA opponents, Lehigh will represent the EIWA NWCA National Championship Dual Series Sunday February 21 at a Big Ten Opponent that is still to be determined. "We wrestled hard but I think we were a little flat," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "Sometimes that week layoff sometimes does that to you. We had two good weeks of training, but sometimes that zaps your legs a little bit. They pushed themselves through that when they needed to." Sophomore Darian Cruz upended David Terao in a battle of top-15 grapplers in the featured bout of the dual, setting the tone for Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks raced to a 16-0 lead after four bouts. The eighth-ranked Terao raced to a 4-2 lead with takedowns in each of the first two periods. Cruz, ranked No. 14 at 125 was able to turn the tides in the second period with an escape in front of the American bench. He then slapped on a cradle for a go ahead takedown and was able to work Terao onto his back for four near fall points to lead 9-4 after two periods. Terao escaped to open the third but Cruz's second takedown of the match gave him an 11-5 lead before Terao scored in the final seconds to make the final tally 11-8. "That was a big match, for both EIWA seeding and national seeding," Santoro said. "It was fun to watch. We knew big moves could be a part of this match between those two and it ended up being that way. I'm sure they'll see each other again, but it was a good way to start the match off." For the second straight dual Mason Beckman was awarded a win by forfeit after American's Esteban Gomez-Rivera was injured in the Eagles' Friday night loss at Binghamton and was unable to compete. Beckman's 96th career victory gave Lehigh a 10-0 advantage. At 141, junior Randy Cruz was challenged by Tyler Scotton but persevered to pull off a 7-3 win in sudden victory. Cruz rode out the second period and escaped early in the third to take a 1-0 lead but fell victim to a slick duck under by Scotton. An escape by Cruz tied the bout at two and while Cruz had riding time advantage, a second stall warning gave Scotton a third point and sent the match to overtime. In the sudden victory period Cruz converted an early shot into a takedown and added a pair of near fall points for the 7-3 margin. Junior Laike Gardner capped the Lehigh run, using a big third period to pick up a 13-5 major decision over Mike Dahlstrom at 149. Gardner led 4-2 after two and picked up a penalty point for stalling plus four third period takedowns to establish the eight point cushion. With junior Mitch Minotti still sidelined at 157, sophomore Drew Longo got the call against 13th-ranked John Boyle. The third Mountain Hawk to man 157 in a dual this season, Longo hung tough with Boyle, fighting off several Boyle attempts early while nearly converting a few of his own. Boyle rode tough in the second period before Longo was able to escape and broke a 1-1 tie with a third period takedown, plus riding time to win 4-2 and cut Lehigh's lead to 16-3 at intermission. Junior Matt Bonshak made his varsity dual debut at 165 in place of injured freshman Ryan Preisch and scored an early takedown against American's Mitchell Weightman, but the Eagle senior took over from there with takedowns in each of the first two periods and a trio of four point near falls to earn a 20-2 technical fall that was clinched with five seconds remaining on the third period clock. Lehigh capped the dual by taking the final four bouts with a pair of 9-3 decisions sandwiched around a pair of technical falls. At 174 freshman Gordon Wolf earned a 9-3 decision over Michael Eckhart, while senior Nathaniel Brown clinched the dual with his eighth technical fall of the season, topping Jason Grimes 16-0 at the 4:07 mark. Brown scored a takedown and added three sets of four point near falls to lead 14-0 after one period. With choice for the second, Brown opted to go after the takedown instead of the easy escape to end the match and chose neutral. He finally secured the tech with a takedown with 53 second remaining in the second period. Brown ranks second in Division I with eight technical falls. Senior John Bolich scored three first period takedowns before going to work on the mat for near fall points. A pair of four point near falls in the second period secured a 20-2 technical fall in 3:57. In the final bout of the dual, senior Max Wessell downed Jake Scanlan 9-3 at 285. Wessell scored early and added two third period takedowns plus a pair of penalty points for stalling, but ran out of time in his bid for a major decision. The Mountain Hawks will host two matches next weekend to close out their home schedule. Lehigh will host undefeated and No. 1-ranked Penn State Friday at Stabler Arena. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A late fall by freshman Joey McKenna propelled the Stanford wrestling team to a 23-16 win over Air Force, Saturday, at Discover Canyon High School. Stanford scored bonus points in three bouts, including major decisions by Nathan Butler and Garet Krohn, to move to 10-3 on the season. Butler, ranked 20th nationally, started things off for the Cardinal with a 9-0 major decision over Marcus Malecek at heavyweight. There was no score after the opening period and Malecek elected to go down to start the second. The redshirt sophomore was able to record four nearfall points in the second as he remained on top for the duration of the period. Butler then got the escape to start the third and tacked on a stalling point, a takedown and riding time for his 22nd win of the season. Redshirt sophomore Connor Schram picked up his second win of the week with an 8-4 decision over Issac Jimenez at 125 pounds. Ranked No. 17, Schram led 4-3 after two periods and chose to start down for the third. After securing the escape, he recorded a takedown with 35 seconds left and notched riding time for the win. Ranked 18th nationally, Wilson led 3-1 in the third and secured a late takedown to seal the win. He move to 20-5 overall and 12-1 in duals this season. Krohn's major decision over Zen Ikehara at 184 pounds solidified the dual win for the Cardinal, leading 23-12 with one bout left. The redshirt sophomore, who hails from Arvada, Colorado, recorded a quick takedown in the first and was able to remain on top for the remainder of the period. An escape and another takedown pushed Krohn's lead to 5-0 after two. Two more takedowns, two nearfall points and riding time gave Krohn his 13th win of the season. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Evan Henderson's eighth pin of the year and technical falls from Joey Ward and John Michael Staudenmayer powered No. 14 North Carolina to a 27-20 win at No. 18 Virginia Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. Nine of the 10 matches were won with bonus points in an action-packed dual that saw the Tar Heels get their first ACC win of the year and beat the Cavaliers for the second year in a row. Virginia (6-5, 1-3 ACC) raced out to a 12-0 lead thanks to consecutive pins and 125 and 133 pounds. Nick Herrmann stuck Anthony Bosco with 1:02 left in the second period before No. 6 George DiCamillo scored a first-period fall against James Szymanski. Carolina (10-3, 1-2 ACC) started the comeback immediately, with No. 11 Ward putting together a dominant performance at 141. The redshirt junior from Cincinnati scored early and often against Zachary Watson before the match was stopped with four seconds left in the first period and Ward up 16-0. No. 6 Henderson did Ward one better by planting Christopher Yankowich after 2:25 for his eighth pin of the year. "The Birth of a Nation" -- a film written and directed by former Penn State and Oklahoma wrestler Nate Parker -- was something of a sensation at the Sundance Film Festival this winter, not only cleaning up on major awards, but also sold for the highest price of any film in the long history of the Park City, Utah festival. Nate ParkerThe film which tells the story of the 1831 slave revolt led by Nat Turner won the grand jury prize for a narrative film and was voted the best movie by audiences at the festival, "setting up an expected 2017 Oscar run," according to the New York Times. If that weren't enough, Fox Searchlight Pictures paid $17.5 million -- a Sundance record -- for the distribution rights to Parker's 118-minute film, which was independently financed for about $10 million. In accepting the awards on stage, Parker -- who, in addition to his writer/director roles, played Nat Turner in the film -- said, "An issue film succeeds when it touches people. I've seen that people are open to change." Before his "The Birth of a Nation" premiered at Sundance, Parker told the audience, "I made this film for one reason: creating change agents." The former Nittany Lion-turned-Sooner wrestler added that getting the film made was "extremely difficult for many reasons … the first was our subject matter: anytime we are dealing with history, specifically slavery, I found that desperately sanitized. There's a resistance, I'll say, to dealing with this material." "It took Nate Parker seven years, $100,000 of his own money, and a lot of hard work to make 'The Birth of a Nation,'" according to Wired.com. Film critic Justin Chang of the entertainment publication Variety seems to think the time and effort on Parker's part was more than worth it. In the opening paragraph of his strongly positive review, Chang wrote, "It speaks to his ambition that the writer, director, producer and actor Nate Parker chose to title his slavery drama "The Birth of a Nation" though the film would be a significant achievement by any name. Arriving more than a century after D.W. Griffith's epic lit up the screen with racist images forever destined to rankle and provoke, this powerfully confrontational account of Nat Turner's life and the slave rebellion he led in 1831 seeks to purify and reclaim a motion-picture medium that has only just begun to treat America's 'peculiar institution' with anything like the honesty it deserves." Born in November 1979 in Norfolk, Va., Parker was introduced to wrestling as a high school sophomore. At national wrestling powerhouse Great Bridge High School, Parker claimed the 125-pound Division AAA title at the 1998 Virginia state championships, and an eighth place finish at the Junior Nationals. Parker earned a scholarship to wrestle at Penn State, and became a starter. However, he left the school after he and a teammate were accused of having had non-consensual sex with a woman; he was acquitted in 2001. Parker transferred to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned All-American honors by placing fifth in the 141-pound bracket at the 2002 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. ITHACA, N.Y. -- With a match against No. 4 Oklahoma State looming on Sunday, the Cornell wrestling team made sure it wasn't looking ahead and took care of business to remain atop the Ivy League standings, winning its 71st consecutive conference match with a 23-15 triumph over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red improved to 4-4 on the year, while the Lions fell to 8-5 (1-2 Ivy). Cornell forfeited at 125 and used four backups in the lineup, but a late rally by Owen Scott at 197 sealed the win for the Big Red. The teams traded forfeits, with Cornell surrendering six points at 125 and Columbia giving them back at 141, meaning the only match contestedi n the first three weights was top-ranked Nahshon Garrett's 18-3 technical fall win over 2014 first-team All-Ivy selection Angelo Amenta at 133. Cornell never trailed in the fual after Mark Grey had his hand raised at 141, as senior Logan David earned a win on Senior Weekend with a 4-3 triumph over Danny Reed at 149 to build the team lead to 14-6. Duke Pickett and Brian Realbuto were dominant in decision wins at 165 and 174 over strong Lion opponents, and Scott wrapped up the win by overcoming a 3-0 deficit thanks to a reversal, an escape, a third period takedown and a stalling call to earn the 6-3 victory. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Appalachian State University wrestling notched its biggest win of the season on Friday night against SoCon rival No. 25 Chattanooga. The Mountaineers (10-3, 5-1 SoCon) won six of ten bouts in their wire-to-wire, 22-15, win over the Mocs (10-3, 5-1 SoCon). “I'm really proud of the heart and fight our guys showed tonight!, said head coach JohnMark Bentley. “It was a great team effort!” Appalachian jumped on Chattanooga early, winning the first three matches of the night. Vito Pasone set the tone for the Apps in the 125-pound match with a first period pin of Alonzo Allen to open up a 6-0 lead. With the win, Pasone remained perfect in SoCon matches with a 6-0 mark. Irvin Enriquez improved to 3-0 in Southern Conference matches at 133 pounds with his 6-0 decision over Cody Minnick. With a 9-0 lead, Michael Longo also remained perfect in SoCon play when he topped Mike Pongracz by a 5-2 decision. Chase Zemenak got UTC on the board in the 149-pound match against Matt Zovistoski. San Luis Obispo, Calif. -- The Oregon State wrestling team won 7 of 10 matches and defeated Cal Poly 31-12 in a Pacific-12 Conference dual on Friday night to stretch its winning streak to three matches in a row. The Beavers (8-5, 2-1 Pac-12) won the first five matches to build an insurmountable 21-0 lead. A major decision by redshirt freshman Corey Griego at 184 and a pin by redshirt sophomore heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi clinched the match. Sophomore Ronnie Bresser (125) won by technical fall and redshirt junior Joey Delgado (149) won by major decision to also earn bonus points. It was the second major decision of the road trip for Delgado, who also earned extra points in the 21-13 win at Stanford on Thursday. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- With Wisconsin wrestling's dual tied up at 15-15 against No. 12 Rutgers, it all came down to one match at 125 pounds where all eyes were on Wisconsin's Johnny Jimenez as he took on No. 20 Sean McCabe in front of a hostile crowd at the RAC. Jimenez, who entered the match without a win over a ranked opponent this year, ultimately took the edge at the top of the third period with an escape and immediate takedown. With the sophomore's 7-4 victory, the Badgers clinched the 18-15 upset over the No. 12-ranked Scarlet Knights on the road. Wisconsin ended an undefeated six-match home winning streak for Rutgers and extended their own advantage in the series history to 3-0. "Tonight our guys came out and got the job done," head coach Barry Davis said. "We're building momentum right now. We had a good meet with Illinois and moved forward from there. You do what you have to do to win in this league. I took Johnny (Jimenez) back to the locker room and got him relaxed and got him out of that atmosphere and he finished the job for us." No. 7 Ryan Taylor started the dual out with a bang in a ranked matchup against No. 17 Anthony Giraldo at 133 pounds. Giraldo scored first but Taylor used two escapes to tie it up 2-2 after two periods. Taylor started the third period out by gaining two back points but allowed Giraldo to escape. Taylor was called for a stalling point to knot the score 4-4. With Giraldo holding the riding time advantage, Taylor had less than 10 seconds to pull out a big move. And that was exactly what he did. With just six seconds on the clock, Taylor used a big turn to throw Giraldo on his back and pinned the Scarlet Knight to give Wisconsin a strong start with a 6-0 lead. Gabriel Grahek suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 6 Anthony Ashnault to bring the Scarlet Knights within three in the dual. At 149 pounds, a controversial call on a last second takedown at the end of the second period paved the way for Andrew Crone's comeback in the third. Rutgers' Tyson Dippery held a 3-0 advantage headed into the third period after his takedown at the end of the second period was upheld by the officials but that didn't stop Crone. Crone exploded onto the mat in the third period, picking up a reversal and two nearfall points at the 20-second mark. Crone sealed the 5-4 decision with a riding time point, keeping the early lead in Wisconsin's favor, 9-3. No. 17 Richie Lewis edged UW's T.J. Ruschell at 157 pounds in a tight 3-2 match despite Ruschell nearly being awarded a takedown in the last few seconds of the match. In one of the most highly anticipated matches of the evening, No. 3 Isaac Jordan took on No. 8 Anthony Perrotti at 165 pounds in an All-American rematch of the 2014 NCAA seventh-place match where Jordan came out on top with a 2-0 decision. Jordan came across with a pancake in the first period but was denied the back points after. It was a familiar feeling as Jordan used the same strategy he had in 2014, using an escape and riding time point to pull of the win in a rematch that was two years in the making. The win marked Jordan's fourth shutout of the season and fourth triumph over a ranked opponent this season. He now holds a 17-0 record on the season and extended an 18-match winning streak dating back to last season. The Badgers had a 12-6 lead at intermission, just their third halftime lead all season. Ricky Robertson (174 pounds) used a quick reversal to tie the bout at 2-2 with Phillip Bukuckas in the third period. Bukuckas immediately escaped to keep his riding time intact. Robertson had a hard attack at the end to take down Bukuckas and erase the Scarlet Knight's riding time. Robertson followed in suit to his teammates' earlier performances and stole away the end of the match, finishing with a 4-3 decision to push Wisconsin to a 15-6 lead. Rutgers took the next three matches in a row and collected nine-straight points to tie the dual at 15-15 heading into the 125-pound match. Jimenez had a 2-0 advantage until McCabe tied the bout with a reversal at the end of the second period. MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan wrestling coach Tom Borrelli often expresses the importance of winning the state of Michigan when evaluating his team's success. The No. 23-ranked Chippewas accomplished two-thirds of that goal Friday evening, defeating Eastern Michigan, 22-12, in a Mid-American Conference dual at McGuirk Arena. CMU improves to 7-4 overall with the win with a 4-1 mark in the league. Eastern slips to 7-7, 2-5. "I'm pretty happy overall, the matches weren't exactly the way we wanted them," Borrelli said. "We'd like to separate ourselves a little more from our competition and expand on some scores." CMU split its in-state Big Ten rivalries, defeating Michigan State 33-0 on Dec. 6, and falling to No .8 Michigan, 22-12, a week ago. "I really think coach Bolyard is doing a nice job with his team," Borrelli in reference to EMU's David Bolyard, a former All-American at CMU. "They were real competitive today, we got some close calls that kind of determined a couple matches and we were fortunate that those went our way." The Chippewas were able to hold off the Eagles despite forfeiting the 125-pound weight class, with sophomore Brent Fleetwood nursing an injury. "If we we're playing basketball and we only had for guys on the court and they had five it would be pretty hard for us to win," Borrelli said. "Today we won a dual meet with nine guys and they had 10, you have to feel good about that." The match started at 184 pounds where CMU sophomore Jordan Ellingwood posted a 10-2 major decision. "I said to our guys before the duel meet started that the first three matches would be real important," Borrelli said. "We felt like we needed a good start from Jordan and he did that for us getting the major." Senior Jackson Lewis (197) suffered a tough 5-3 sudden-victory loss to Anthony Abro, the lone wrestler in Eastern's lineup who is ranked nationally (18th). "Jackson has been knocking at the door for about two, three years now," said Borrelli. " He's right there, he just hasn't broken through yet, a little bit of it is technique, a little is has to do with composure, but I think more of it is just him believing in himself that he can win those matches." The Chippewas found themselves down 12-4 after Newton Smerchek fell, 3-1 at heavyweight and the Eagles claimed the forfeit victory at 125. The Chippewas won the remaining six matches to pull off the win. Corey Keener (133), No.14 Zach Horan (141), No.19 Justin Oliver, No.14 Luke Smith (157), Jordan Atienza (165) and No.10 Mike Ottinger (174) all claimed decisions. Smith, a senior, won his match over Devan Marry, 8-3, and improved to 24-5 on the season. "Coach has been pushing me to be offensive and open up a little more," Smith said. "I tried to do that, I didn't score on every attack that I would've liked to, but I think I opened up a little more than usual which is a good change of pace for me."
