Hardell Moore, two-time Big 12 wrestling champ and twice an NCAA All-American for Oklahoma State two decades ago, has been named the recipient of the 2016 Gallagher Award from his college alma mater. Hardell MooreThe Gallagher Award, named in honor of the legendary Cowboy wrestling coach Ed Gallagher, is presented annually to an Oklahoma State alumnus who, according to the press statement, "exemplifies the spirit and leadership eminent in the tradition of champions." Moore will be presented with the award prior to the Oklahoma State vs. Stanford dual on Sunday, Feb. 14. Moore wrestled at Oklahoma State from 1995-1998. He won back-to-back Big 12 championships at 158 pounds in 1997 and 1998. Those same years, Moore earned All-American honors at 158, placing fourth at the 1997 NCAAs, and was runner-up at the nationals the following year. While at Stillwater, Moore compiled an overall record of 110-30. After graduating from Oklahoma State, Moore went on to coach the Edmond Generals -- an elite youth wrestling program in Edmond, Okla. just outside Oklahoma City -- for 17 years and continues coaching at the Oklahoma Wrestling Academy, which is a way for college coaches in Oklahoma to scout and recruit the best talent in the state. During his coaching career, Moore has led wrestlers such as current Cowboys Nolan Boyd, Austin Schafer, Landry Chappell, Kyle Garcia, and Boo Lewallen. "Hardell was a two-time All-American for us here at Oklahoma State, but what he did following his career here was much greater," said John Smith, Oklahoma State wrestling coach and past recipient of the Gallagher Award himself. "Over the last 17 years, he has had one of the best clubs in the state of Oklahoma, if not the whole country. Although having a full-time job, he finds a way to help others. He has made a difference for a lot of young people to move on to college and receive a scholarship. He exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the Coach Gallagher Award." In learning he was the recipient of the Gallagher Award, Hardell Moore was gracious -- and genuinely surprised -- by the honor. "First and foremost, this is a huge honor," Moore told Oklahoma State upon being notified. "It was totally unexpected. I got the call this morning from Coach Smith. To be involved with the men that have received it before me, is such an honor. I would like to give thanks to my wife, my lovely kids, my mom and dad, and my brothers." The former Cowboy turned coach posted this message on Facebook: "Thank you all for the kind words, I greatly appreciate it. I am honored and blessed to be receiving this prestigious award. Thank you all again." Presented since 1986, the Gallagher Award is named in honor of Edward Clark Gallagher, head wrestling coach at Oklahoma State from 1916-1940. Considered to be the father of modern college wrestling -- despite never having wrestled -- Gallagher used his engineering background to create up to 400 wrestling holds, along with positive reinforcement techniques to convince his wrestlers that they were unbeatable. With Gallagher at the helm, Oklahoma State crafted a 138-5-4 overall record, including 19 undefeated seasons, and eleven NCAA team titles. He coached 37 individual NCAA champs, averaging three titlewinners each year, despite battling Parkinson's disease the last decade of his life. Gallagher died in August 1940 just shy of his 53rd birthday. Oklahoma State's Gallagher-Iba Arena -- home to the Cowboy wrestling program -- is named in part for coach Gallagher. PRINCETON, N.J. -- If it was up to luck, the Cornell wrestling team's 13th straight Ivy League title may have been the end of a dynasty. Instead, the Big Red celebrated a 14th consecutive unbeaten conference slate after running out to an early lead and knocking off Princeton on Saturday evening at Dillon Gymnasium. The Big Red improved to 6-5 (5-0) Ivy, claiming its 73rd straight league victory in the process. Senior Nahshon Garrett set the tone in the second match of the night with a second period pin of Noah Arjam and junior Brian Realbuto all but clinched the win with his tech fall victory at 174 over No. 16 Jon Schleifer. Princeton won the final three matches of the night, including two with bonus points, to close strong after falling behind 23-3, but the team score was out of reach after Realbuto's win. In a battle of league unbeatens wrestling for the second time today, the Big Red didn't wrestle top-ranked Gabe Dean at 184 pounds, instead resting the junior with the match already won. It was the 30th straight triumph over the Tigers and also extended the program's string of consecutive winning dual meet campaigns to 30 dating back to the 1985-86 season. Dalton Macri got the Big Red off to a great start with a physically dominant 6-1 win over Pat D'Arcy before Garrett pinned Arjam, his eighth pin and 19th bonus point win as part of his 28-0 season. Princeton picked up its only victory of the first half of the dual when Jordan Laster topped Mark Grey 8-4 at 141 before Joey Galasso closed his outstanding day with a 9-7 decision over Mike D'Angelo. Dylan Palacio, who did not wrestle earlier in the day during a 21-9 dual victory at Penn, topped NCAA qualifier Adam Krop 6-4. Ranked Big Red wrestlers Duke Pickett topped NCAA qualifier Judd Ziegler 10-5 at 165 and Realbuto clinched the Ivy title by taking down and repeatedly tilting 16th-ranked Schleifer on his way to a 17-0 shutout. Princeton won the final three matches, including a narrow 6-3 win for 10th-ranked Brett Harner over Owen Scott at 197, and a pin for Ray O'Donnell over Jeramy Sweany to add on some final points for the home team. Cornell will get ready to return to Princeton when the EIWA championships begin on March 5-6, as the Big Red will be in search of its 10th straight EIWA title. Pitt (9-6, 1-3 ACC) opened the dual with wins at 125 and 133 pounds, including No. 17 Dom Forys' first-round pin of James Szymanski at 133. Facing a 9-0 deficit, Carolina turned to 11th-ranked Ward to turn the tide. Ward took command of a wild bout with a dominant third period to score a 9-4 decision over ninth-ranked Racciato to get the Tar Heels on the board. Less than 90 seconds later, the dual was tied. Another ride out and 2:36 in riding time allowed Megaludis to post a 17-5 major. 133: Senior Jordan Conaway (Abbottstown, Pa.), ranked No. 5 at 133, faced Garth Yenter. Conaway exploded out of the gates, turning a low single into a takedown and an early 2-1 lead. The Lion senior spent the next minute plus working the middle of the mat, trying to break through Yenter's defense. His pressure paid off with a second takedown ad the :35 mark and a short ride out gave Conaway a 4-1 lead with :45 in riding time after one period. Conaway chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 5-1 lead. Conaway cut Yenter loose and then paced his way to a swift low single and another takedown to lead 7-1 with :55 on the clock. The Lion then rode Yenter out to lead 7-1 with nearly 2:00 riding time. Yenter chose down to start the third period and Conaway cut him loose immediately. He then blew through a high single and quickly turned Yenter to his back. With the four point fall secured, Conaway then went to work for the pin. The senior thrilled the sell-out Rec Hall crowd by getting the fall at the 5:59 mark, his second pin of the year. 141: Junior Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 14 at 141, met Javier Gasca. Gulibon and Gasca battled evenly for the first half of the opening period with one flurry on the edge of the mat ending with both men on their feet. Gulibon controlled the pace for the period, forcing Gasca to back towards the outside circle but could not work his way in for a score and the match entered the second period tied 0-0. Gasca chose down to start the second period and Gulibon went to work on offense. The Lion junior controlled Gasca for :30 before the Spartan escaped to a 1-0 lead. Gulibon continued to force Gasca into defense until the Spartan took his first shot, connecting on a high single and working Gulibon to the mat for a takedown and a 3-0 lead with :28 left in the period. Gasca then rode Gulibon out and led 3-0 after two periods. Gulibon chose down to start the third period but could not break free of Gasca's ride until the 1:25 mark. Gulibon escaped to a 5-2 score but 1:04 in time gave Gasca a 6-2 win. 149: Sophomore Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 149, battled Kaelan Richards. With Retherford quickly took Richards down on the edge of the mat to lead 2-1 after a quick Spartan escape. Retherford fought off a near takedown for Richards, scrambled his way behind the Sparta and steadily worked way to a takedown and a 4-1 lead. He spent the next minute-plus trying to turn Richards but settled for a ride out and a 4-1 lead with 1:30 in riding time after one period. Retherford chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 5-1 lead. He immediately turned in on Richards and blew through a high double for a takedown to lead 7-2 after cutting him loose. A fast low double on the edge of the mat gave Retherford a 9-2 lead. Retherford cut him loose and then added three more takedowns to lead 15-5 with 2:25 in time after two. Richards chose down to start the third period and Retherford cut him loose, took him down quickly and cut him loose again. Leading 17-7, Retherford added three more takedowns before nearly turning Richards for the pin. He settled for a 24-9 technical fall at the 6:49 mark when Richards was hit for stalling to end the match. 157: Red-shirt freshman Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 157, wrestled Mark Bozzo. Bozzo got in on a quick high single, looking to take Nolf down early. But Nolf was steady, forcing a scramble and then a stalemate with 2:11 on the clock to keep action neutral. Nolf then began snapping Bozzo's head down, working his opponent in the center of the mat before taking a 2-0 lead on a throw and takedown. Nolf quickly added four more takedowns before locking up Bozzo's shoulders, quickly turning him to his back and getting his second first period pin in as many days. The fall came at the 2:02 mark and was Nolf's 12th of the year. 165: Junior Geno Morelli (DuBois, Pa.) stepped forth at 165 and faced Dean Vettese. Morelli connected on a high single at the 2:10 mark and worked Vettese to the mat on the Nittany Lion logo. But Vettese was able to force a stalemate and keep the bout scoreless. Morelli continued to work his offense, taking numerous shots while Vettese blocked. Vettese was hit for stalling and then got in on a slow single. Morelli forced a scramble that nearly had the Lion pinned, but he rolled out of trouble and killed the clock. Michigan State challenged the no takedown call and the call stood. Vettese chose down to start the second period and Morelli put together a strong ride to build up :45 in riding time before the escape. Vettese got hit for a second stall and Morelli tied the bout at 1-1. The Lion junior then tried to connect on a high single but Vettese was able to force a stalemate with :25 to wrestle. Tied 1-1, Morelli chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 2-1 lead. Morelli picked up the bout's first takedown early in the third period and then controlled action from the top position. With a riding time point in hand, Morelli forced Vettese into another stall before he escaped. Morelli tacked on a final takedown at the buzzer and 2:02 in riding time to post the 8-2 win. 174: Red-shirt freshman Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 1 at 174, met Travis Curley. Nickal took an early 2-1 lead with a fast takedown to start the bout. He cut Curley loose and quickly took him down again to open up a 4-1 lead. Working offensive control, Nickal nearly turned Curley for back points but the Spartan rolled out to an escape. Nickal was undaunted, blowing through a low double to up his lead to 6-2 at the first period's midway point. The Lion freshman tacked on two more takedowns and locked up a cradle momentarily on the second. Curley broke the hold and Nickal settled for a 10-4 lead with 2::03 in riding time after one period. Nickal chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to an 11-4 lead. He worked his way into control of Curley's shoulders and broke the Spartan down for another takedown and a 13-4 lead with 1:10 on the clock. Nickal cut Curley loose to a 13-5 score, picked up another point on a stall and then took him down again for a 16-5 lead after two periods. Curley chose down to start the third period and Nickal cut him loose only to quickly take him down again. The Lion added three more takedowns to post the 24-9 tech fall at the 6:19 mark. 184: Sophomore Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 6 at 184, took on Shawn Shadaia. The duo battled evenly for the first half of the period before Shadaia nearly connected on a low single in front of the Penn State bench. McCutcheon broke out of the hold in time to move out of bounds and keep the bout scoreless with 1:30 on the clock. McCutcheon tried twice to break through with shots, but Shadaia was able to step back and sent the bout into the second period tied 0-0. McCutcheon chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. The Lion sophomore then picked up the offensive tempo, working his way into control on a high single to take Shadaia down and lead 3-0 with :58 on the clock. McCutcheon forced Shadaia into a stall warning with a ride out and led 3-0 after two periods. Shadaia chose neutral to start the third period. McCutcheon tried to connect on a low single, forcing Shadaia to scramble to his feet as a stalemate was called with :25 on the clock. The score held and McCutcheon posted the 3-0 decision. 197: Senior Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 1 at 197, met Jacob Cooper. McIntosh scored quickly, taking a 2-1 lead on a low single and cut. The Lion senior turned another ankle pick into control and a 4-2 lead. The Lion senior's offense kept Cooper backing up for the next minute-plus and he connected on a third ankle pick to lead 6-2 with 1:07 on the clock. McIntosh steadily worked Cooper's shoulders to the mat, picking up four near fall points to lead 10-2 with 1:23 in riding time after one period. McIntosh chose neutral to start the second period. He blew through a low double to up his lead to 12-2 and then began trying to turn the Spartan for more near fall points or a pin. He deftly locked up a cradle and turned Cooper for the pin at the 4:22 mark. 285: Red-shirt freshman Nick Nevills (Clovis, Calif.), fresh off his Penn State debut last night in Lehigh, made his Rec Hall debut at 285 and took on Dimitrus Renfroe. Nevills set the tone early, connecting on a single leg for an early 2-0 lead. He then worked to break Renfroe down and build up riding time. The Lion freshman kept the Spartan on the mat for :46 before Renfroe escaped to a 2-1 score. The Nevills takedown was the first period's lone offense and he led 2-1 after one. Renfroe chose down to start the second period and Nevills maintained control. He built up over 1:00 in time before Renfroe escaped to a 2-2 tie. Nevills shot low at the 1:00 mark but Renfroe stepped back and kept the bout tied as action continued on the Nittany Lion logo. Tied 2-2 after two periods, Nevills chose down to start the third period. He steadily worked his way to his feet and got the escape at the 1:22 mark to lead 3-2. Nevills countered a Renfroe shot, working his way around for another takedown and a 5-2 win as time expired, his first win as a Nittany Lion. -

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- When it came down to the final match of the day, senior Chris Johnson wanted to make the most of it for the SIUE wrestling team. Johns posted an 8-0 major decision at heavyweight over Campbell's Jere Heino, giving SIUE a 24-18 victory over the Camels. SIUE finished the Southern Conference season with a 3-3 record, good enough for its best-ever finish in fourth place. "Our goal is not to finish fourth in the SoCon but to move up and show progress," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "We want to be showing that we are moving forward." "It feels great to get my final win at home and on senior night," said Johnson. "I stuck to my game plan. I knew as long as I would wrestle tough for seven minutes I would come out on top." SIUE had to come from behind in the match after Campbell raced out to an 11-0 lead after two matches. The Cougars won the next three matches with decisions by Trevor Feagans at 141 pounds, John Fahy at 149 pounds and Erik Travers at 157 pounds. That put the match at 11-9 heading into the break that introduced SIUE's four seniors to the crowd – McMahon, Johnson, Brandon Brindley and Derek Nagle. Campbell regained some momentum with a 3-2 victory by Paul Duggan over SIUE's Nate Higgins at 165 pounds. SIUE took its first lead of the match as a team when McMahon pinned Alex Vosburgh in 4 minutes, 27 seconds. McMahon, an NCAA qualifier last season, is now 6-1 this season after sitting out most of the season with an injury. "It has been painful not being able to help the team out," said McMahon. Jake Tindle also earned a big victory with a 19-3 technical fall over Austin McNeil at 197 pounds. "I didn't think coming into the match that bonus points would be such a big thing. Obviously, Jake coming away with a technical fall was big," added Spates. SIUE closes out the regular season next week with a dual Friday at Purdue followed by the US Western National Open Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Results: 125 - Collin Stewart (Campbell) over Joe Antonelli (SIUE) (TF 19-2 6:12) 133 - Nathan Kraisser (Campbell) over Dakota Leach (SIUE) (Fall 4:51) 141 - Trevor Feagans (SIUE) over Zack Barker (Campbell) (Dec 6-3) 149 - John Fahy (SIUE) over Kaleb Warner (Campbell) (Dec 8-4) 157 - Erik Travers (SIUE) over Quentin Perez (Campbell) (Dec 3-1) 165 - Paul Duggan (Campbell) over Nate Higgins (SIUE) (Dec 3-2) 174 - Connor McMahon (SIUE) over Alex Vosburgh (Campbell) (Fall 4:27) 184 - Ville Heino (Campbell) over Derek Nagel (SIUE) (MD 22-8) 197 - Jake Tindle (SIUE) over Austin McNeil (Campbell) (TF 19-3 5:27) 285 - Chris Johnson (SIUE) over Jere Heino (Campbell) (MD 8-0)

Three wrestling stories that weren't as originally reported
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
Don't believe everything you read. Things are not always what they initially appear to be. Those two statements are true regarding at least three recent news stories with a connection to wrestling. The original reports proved not to be true. InterMat thought it might be helpful to set the record straight on these wrestling-related stories ... to prevent readers from any potential embarrassment, as in "Did you hear the one about …" only to have your friends tell you, "Not true!" Ex-wrestler kills mountain lion -- not Last week, media from around the world reported that a California man described as a "former NCAA wrestler" fought off a mountain lion that attacked him near a popular hiking trail. He fought back, breaking the cougar's neck, killing it. The man went into great detail about the attack in an interview with a San Luis Obispo TV station, showing scratches and scars on his body. The TV station did some digging, and found holes in the man's story. Within a few days, the "victim" was forced to admit he had made up the story. No word as to whether the "former NCAA wrestler" part was fiction, too. Burroughs to train MMA star -- not A week ago, a number of mixed martial arts websites were reporting that Ultimate Fighting Championships had hired Jordan Burroughs, 2012 Olympic gold medal-winning freestyle wrestler and two-time NCAA champ for University of Nebraska, to coach UFC fighter Conor McGregor in wrestling. The story may have seemed credible, as a number of MMA media outlets quoted another fighter … with some articles lambasting the UFC for playing favorites by helping one fighter with his alleged wrestling deficiency. This story was refuted by two people who should know -- the man who heads up UFC, and the wife of Jordan Burroughs. Dana White, UFC president, strenuously denied the story, saying "That's ridiculous." Lauren Burroughs posted this message on Twitter: "Twice now today I have read or listened to completely false or inaccurate "news" reports regarding my husband's career." It only makes sense. Jordan Burroughs has plenty of things to occupy his time these days. Such as preparing for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro this summer. Hawkeyes in trouble for endorsing Trump -- not Just before the Iowa caucuses, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump held a rally at the University of Iowa Fieldhouse. Prior to the rally, Trump had met with some members of the Hawkeye football and wrestling teams … then, while on stage, the multimillionaire candidate called each set of athletes out of the audience to join him. After acknowledging the football team (who gave him a replica jersey), Trump shifted to wrestling. "Get the wrestlers up here," Trump said. "Come on, fellas. Where are they? Where are they? These guys -- I'm not messing with 'em ... Look at these guys. Undefeated team, University of Iowa." Some media outlets immediately reported that the student-athletes and/or Trump may have violated NCAA endorsement rules. However, within a couple days, the NCAA responded to those news reports, saying, "Acting on his or her own, a student-athlete may endorse a political candidate." Endorsement or not, sharing the stage with the winning Hawkeye wrestling team did not make Trump a winner in the Hawkeye state. Although polls had predicted he would win the Iowa Republican caucus, Trump came in second. -

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- On a night when Coach Heffernan and staff honored the 2015-2016 senior class, it was one of its own that clinched the Senior Night victory for the Fighting Illini. After an upset victory for the visiting Golden Gophers at 174 pounds, the match stood tied entering the final bout. Jeff Koepke improved to 18-5 on the season with a dual-clinching 8-4 decision over Chris Pfarr of Minnesota. The victory moves Illinois to 13-5 on the season, while Minnesota drops to 9-8. "He's a senior, it's a great way for him to go out on Senior Night, last home dual meet," said Head Coach Jim Heffernan. "Koepke's a senior, he's been through a lot of this stuff before. I was pretty confident he would keep his composure and wrestle well." A match that seesawed back and forth to the end, it was Minnesota who struck first. Beginning the match at 197 pounds, No. 3 Brett Pfarr defeated Emory Parker. However, Parker gave an admirable effort against the third-ranked grappler. Trailing 5-1 after period one, and 7-3 after period two, Parker responded with an escape and takedown to cut it to 7-6. Unfortunately for Parker, Pfarr added one more takedown to seal a 10-5 decision. The Gophers increased their margin to the largest of the night with an 8-0 shutout by No. 9 Michael Kroells over Brooks Black. The four-point major decision pushed the Illini deficit out to seven points. Having battled through the buzz saw that is the Big Ten as a true freshman, Francis Edelen was in search for his first career Big Ten victory. After Skyler Perry of Minnesota opened with a takedown, Edelen would shut Perry for the remaining six minutes. Edelen earned am escape in period one, a stalling point in period two, and another escape point in period three to edge Perry, 3-2. Head Coach Jim Heffernan expressed how proud he was of how the freshman has continued to fight throughout the year. "Francis [Edelen] has really hung in there; he's in a tough spot," said Heffernan. "He's wrestled a lot of good guys lately, so the fact that he was able to hang in there, and find a way to win, I was really proud of him. We got an upset win early, and we gave up one late, so Francis won the meet for us essentially." Returning after battling illness last weekend, No. 2 Zane Richards took control of his bout with Sam Brancale early and often. Richards used two takedowns in the opening frame, and then piled on two four-point near falls in the second period. Richards finalized his 21st victory of the season in the final period with a takedown to win 17-2. The win solidified a perfect regular season for the red-shirt junior from Carbondale, Illinois. After Illinois stormed back to take the lead 8-7 through four matches, Minnesota responded with victories in the next two weight classes to reclaim the advantage. First, No. 6 Tommy Thorn used two first-period takedowns to jump out 4-1 over the Illini freshman, and then holding on for a 6-2 final tally. At 149, No. 16 Jake Short and Illinois' Kyle Langenderfer fought for seven straight minutes, each taking turns venting frustration throughout. Although Langenderfer stayed within reach for most of the seven minutes, Short held on for an 8-3 decision. Although trailing 13-8, the Illini entered the final four matches of the dual confident after only allowing one bonus point and stealing the three points at 125 pounds. No. 2 Isaiah Martinez brought the Fighting Illini grapplers back to within a point of Minnesota by putting on an exhibition of strength against Gopher Brandon Kingsley. Martinez used six takedowns and a reversal, while only allowing escape points, to take a 15-6 major decision victory. Wrestling for the final time at Huff Hall, senior No. 6 Steven Rodrigues capped his career on Huff Hall's mat with his seventh Big Ten victory of the season. Much like Martinez in the match prior, Rodrigues wore out his opponent Brandon Krone with 10 takedowns, six of which came in the final period, in route to a 21-8 major decision that put the Illini ahead 16-13. The upset of the dual came at 174 pounds, with Minnesota's Nicholas Wanzek defeating No. 4 Zac Brunson in a highly contested seven-minute tussle. After an early takedown by Brunson, Wanzek reversed Brunson and got a shoulder on the mat for a surprising four-point near fall. Now trailing 6-2, Brunson got an escape and takedown to move within one after the first three minutes. After outscoring Wanzek 3-2 in the second frame, Brunson and Wanzek entered the final two minutes knotted at eight. Brunson got an escape to start the final period, but not before Wanzek moved his riding time past the one-minute threshold. Now needing a takedown to win the match, Brunson was unable to get back to his offense. Wanzek used one final takedown, plus the added riding time point, to close out a 13-10 decision to tie the dual. The Fighting Illini looked to senior Jeff Koepke to cap his senior night with a dual-clinching victory. The senior maintained his poise following the upset of Brunson, using two takedowns in period one to forge ahead 4-2. After a quiet second period, Koepke finished off Chris Pfarr of Minnesota to win the match by a tally of 8-4. The win improves Koepke to 18-5 on the season, and gave No. 12 Illinois a 19-16 win over No. 16 Minnesota. "I really wanted to go out there and give my best match for the fans that have been supporting me all these years," said Koepke. I've got to get to my attacks earlier, and I did that [tonight]. I got the first takedown for the first time in awhile. I saw Zac [Brunson] kind of struggle to get position, so I turned the pace down a little bit. I could have gone for a higher score, but I kept it safe and got the win." Following their back-to-back wins to end the regular season, Coach Heffernan says that the team will use the next three weeks to rest up and tweak some things heading into Big Ten Championships in Iowa City on March 5 & 6. "We'll give them some time off to be regular college students, get organized, because the next three weeks will go by fast," said Heffernan. "We'll do a lot of good training, clean things up, and spend some time getting healthy heading into Big Ten Championships." Results: 197: No. 3 Brett Pfarr (MINN) dec. GREELEY, Colo. -- The Northern Colorado Bears wrestled in their second to last dual of the season on Friday night, defeating the Utah Valley Wolverines, 19-18. UNC won five of the ten matches, including decision wins at 125, 157 and 184, with bonus point wins at 165 and 197. True freshman Jesse Reed picked up the first win of the night for the Bears with what was also his first dual win of his collegiate career. Reed fought hard in the first period, earning a quick escape after being taken down, followed by a takedown of his own to go into the second period up 3-2. He rode tough in the second, not letting his opponent up for the entire two minutes. Reed then managed another escape and takedown in the third period to make the final score 7-2 with the riding time advantage. "Jesse has made a ton of improvement," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "A perfect example would be that he wrestled this same opponent in early November at the Cowboy Open and only beat him 3-1. He knows he's getting better, and he's constantly doing the right things to continue to improve." The Bears dropped the remaining three matches going into intermission, but Eleazar De Luca came through for the Bears at 157 pounds, picking up another decision win over UVU's Raider Lofthouse. De Luca and Lofthouse had a back and forth first period, each picking up a takedown and escape to keep them deadlocked at 3-3. An escape for De Luca to start the period, followed by a UVU takedown and yet another escape for De Luca kept them tied to go into the third period, 5-5. De Luca picked up a takedown to take the lead, and would end up taking the match by decision, 7-6. Immediately following, Keilan Torres picked up a win of his own, this time with bonus points. Torres took multiple committed shots throughout the match, and was able to continuously run through Humphereys to earn an eight-point win. Three takedowns in the first period alone put him up 6-2, and another two, along with an escape and the riding time advantage, gave hisTorres the 12-4 major decision, tacking on four team points for the Bears. Tanner Davis picked up his second dual win of the season, notching a 3-1 decision over Will Sumner to keep the Bears within five points of Utah Valley overall. Davis managed to hold Sumner down for 1:30 of the second period before giving up the escape, and picked up a huge reversal just ten seconds into the final period to give himself a 2-1 lead. Holding on the remainder of the match, he had more than enough riding time for the advantage point to make it 3-1. At the close of his match, the Bears were only down 18-13 in the dual, giving the Bears one last shot at the win. Redshirt senior Trent Noon took the mat for the final match of the night, and he wasted no time in going out for the win. It took him only 16 seconds to pick up a takedown, and just another 30 to add a four-point nearfall. Working hard for the fall, it was just ten seconds later that the official would slap the mat, giving Noon the pin for six team points, and the Bears their first Big 12 dual win of the season. "This is how we expect Trent to wrestle every time he goes out there. It's believing that he can go out there and do that every time because that's what champions do." The Bears are at home next Wednesday, Feb. 17, for their final dual of the season. UNC will host Air Force for a 7:00pm dual that will also serve as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- No. 14 Rutgers wrestling returned to form Friday night at University Gym, where the Scarlet Knights took eight of 10 bouts and four by bonus points in a 30-9 win over Indiana. Rutgers (14-5, 4-4) began and ended the day with major decisions, and got a six-point boost on a first period fall from No. 13 Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) at heavyweight. The dual win snapped a two-match Rutgers losing skid. "We were excited to get on the road and get back to our winning ways," said head coach Scott Goodale. "Any win in the Big Ten is a good win. Now we're moving on to Sunday." The dual started at 165 pounds, where No. 8 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) shut out Bryce Martin, 10-0. Perrotti improves to 18-3 on the season and 7-1 in Big Ten duals. Indiana's (6-6, 3-9) No. 11 Nate Jackson eked out a win against Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.), 6-5, at 174 pounds after a thrilling third period. Bakuckas lifted Jackson to a single leg and converted the takedown going out of bounds with 20 seconds remaining. The two points tied the match, 5-5, but Jackson escaped with one tick left on the clock. A match later Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) swung three team points Rutgers' way with a gutsy 4-3 win against Matt Irick. Gravina is now 17-6 overall. The most thrilling win of the night for Rutgers came at 197 pounds. Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) faced a 4-1 deficit as the third period began, but the RU veteran got a two-point turn, pressured the full two minutes, and was rewarded a stall point from Jake Masengale as time expired. With the score tied, 4-4, Hrymack (14-9) got to a single and tripped Masengale to the mat for the 6-4 sudden victory win. "It was important. Winning the third period, doing it on top, turning people - that was the difference," Goodale said. "He rode and then he gutted it out in overtime, where he felt it. When you win those tight matches in overtime like that, that means you're in great shape, you're in condition, you feel it, and there's confidence there. Hopefully he carries that into Sunday." Smith (21-6) inched closer to the century mark for his career with a fall in 2:03 against Fletcher Miller. The High Point HS product now owns 95 wins in a Rutgers singlet with plenty more to wrestle for. RU's only other loss of the night came a match later at the hands of No. 19 125-poounder Elijah Oliver. Oliver pinned Josh Patrick (Rector, Pa.) in 2:56 to reverse the six points from a match prior and make the dual, 16-9. But Scarlet Knights quickly shut the door on a Hoosier comeback, taking four-straight to close it out. No. 19 Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.) scored a takedown late to close out a 12-3 major decision and jump to 15-10. Nicholas Ottaviano (Marlboro, N.J.) wrestled in place of No. 5 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) at 141 pounds and scored his first-career Big Ten win, 8-3. The dual match was just his second this season. "When you try to get kids matches and rest your starters you want guys to step in and perform well, and he did that," Goodale said. "Good for him. He's been in there battling every day in the practice room taking a lot of lumps. For him to get a Big Ten win, great for Nick Ottaviano." Following a 6-2 decision at 149 pounds from Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.), No. 12 Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) stayed hot with a 13-4 major decision against Jake Danishek. STILLWATER -- The fourth-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team won its ninth-consecutive dual Friday, defeating Army in dominating fashion, 36-3. The Cowboys (11-2, 6-0 Big 12) won nine of the dual's 10 matches, with four of those resulting in bonus points (two pins, one tech fall, one major decision). “We're trying to build momentum,†OSU head coach John Smith said. “I think we look at this particular dual and see we scored a lot of points, but we also need to recognize it does get a lot tougher as we move through the end of the season.†The dual began at 125 pounds, where No. 6 Eddie Klimara picked up his 99th career victory in a dominant 15-0 technical fall over Jacob Fontanez. Klimara jumped in front early with a quick takedown and three two-point nearfalls to take an 8-0 lead at the end of the first period. In the second, Klimara quickly escaped, took down Fontanez and scored a four-point nearfall to secure the tech fall (3:58). “I'm just trying to get the guys fired up. If I go out there and start slow, it's a threat for other guys to go slow so I'm just going out there to wrestle hard and motivate the team,†Klimara said after his tech fall victory. Coming off of matchups with No. 1 and No. 4 at 133 pounds, Gary Wayne Harding used four takedowns and nearly four minutes of riding time to secure 10-3 victory, putting the Pokes up 8-0 in the match. Top-ranked Dean Heil defeated Army's Logan Everett, 7-2, at 141-pounds to improve to 22-0 this season. No. 13 Anthony Collica scored six takedowns in his matchup with Mark Marchetti before sticking the Black Knight at 6:05. Collica's second-straight win by fall brings his season win total to 20. “We were all stunned,†Smith said of his 149-pounder's victory. “It was a move we haven't seen all year from him or coached him to do. We like to see him being creative and putting extra points on the board.†The Cowboys suffered their lone loss of the dual at 157 pounds as Ryan Blees, making his second dual start of the season, fell to Russell Parsons, 10-4. In the next match, two-time national champion Alex Dieringer continued to assert his dominance on the 165-pound division as he extended his winning streak to 71 consecutive matches. With under five seconds remaining in the match, Dieringer recorded his fifth takedown and then pinned Andrew Mendel's shoulders to the mat with just one second remaining. The fall is Dieringer's ninth of the season and 22nd win that resulted in bonus points for the Cowboys. “I'm always going for bonus points,†Dieringer said. “It was a sloppy match, but I've got to move past it and get ready for Stanford. At 174, Chandler Rogers stepped into the lineup once again, this time picking up the victory over No. 18 Brian Harvey, 11-8, in a hard-fought match. Rogers' officially clinched the match for the Cowboys as they lead the Black Knights 26-3. After knocking off the nation's top-ranked 184-pounder last week, No. 14 Nolan Boyd nearly picked up bonus points again as he defeated Samson Imonode 10-3. Preston Weigel won a thrilling match against Army's Bryce Barnes. Barnes took down Weigel with three seconds remaining in the match, but it wasn't enough as the Cowboy had locked up the riding time point to win, 10-8. In the dual's final matchup, No. 5 Austin Marsden won OSU's ninth match of the night and extended his own winning streak to 14 straight as he knocked off Trevor Smith, 12-3.
