FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- In their second regular dual match of the season, the LIU wrestling team got its first win, beating Sacred Heart 24-16. The Sharks came from behind and had two falls en route to the win over the Pioneers. After SHU jumped out to a 6-0 lead with decisions in the first two matches, Tim Nagosky got the first win for LIU, with a 4-2 decision over Mark Blokh. Freshman Bryce Cockrell would even up the team score 6-6- with his 4-2 decision over Sean Faraon at 125. The Sharks took their first lead of the day when freshman Devin Matthews eeked out a 3-2 decision over Kyle Randall at 133. Another freshman, Drew Witham, increased LIU's lead to 15-6 when he registered a fall over Ryan Burns in just 53 seconds at 141. Junior Chris Gomez also recorded a fall, defeating Seth Brown at 149 in 4:21. SHU would take a major decision and a win via fall at 157 and 165 to close the gap to 21-16, but the Sharks finished strong, as James Langan beat SHU's Scott Jarosz, 6-5 at 174 tto cap the day, and the 24-16 win for LIU. KENT, Ohio -- The Kent State Golden Flashes opened their home slate with a pair of impressive dual victories, defeating Gannon 19-12 and Mercyhurst 26-9 inside the Kent State Field House. Jake Ferri led the Golden Flashes on Wednesday, picking up a pair of major decision victories and running his match win streak to five. Ian Senz also won his two matches on Wednesday picking up a 9-8 comeback victory over Evan Fisler of Gannon and a 6-4 sudden victory over Spencer Head of Mercyhurst. Joe Andrassy also stepped in at 184 and grinded out two victories including an overtime thriller against Mercyhurst. Ferri got the Flashes out to an early 4-0 lead against Gannon in the first dual of the night. The Knights, ranked #7 in the Division-II polls, won four of the next five matches to take a 12-7 lead heading into the heavier weight matches. Mike Caniglia stopped the Knights' momentum with a 3-1 victory at 174 pounds. Joe Andrassy kept it going, grinding out a 4-3 victory over Cam Page at 184 to give Kent State a 13-12 lead. Colin McCracken led throughout his match at 197, earning a 7-4 victory by decision against Joel Leisle and Jacob Cover clinched the victory with a 5-4 decision against Freddie Nixon to make it 19-12 Kent State. The two schools also held five extra matches that did not count towards the team score. Gannon won four of the five extra matches with Tanner Clark earning the 6-2 decision at 285. Again, it was Ferri who got things started in dominant fashion with his second major decision of the night. Patrick Gould rode an impressive 10-point first period to an 11-6 decision at 133 pounds to put Kent State up 7-0. Mercyhurst got on the board at 141 as Alexis Soriano grabbed points late in the third period to take a 4-3 decision. Kody Komara pitched a shutout and narrowly missed out on the major decision bonus point in a 7-0 victory. Senz' aforementioned sudden victory put Kent State up 10 and Mason Karpinski had a pair of near falls and earned an 18-9 major decision. Andrassy rounded out the Kent State scoring, getting a reversal in extra time to earn the 3-1 sudden victory. The Flashes and Lakers held a pair of extra matches after the dual. Raphael Rodriguez earned an 8-6 victory over Caiden Mooney and Tanner Clark closed his 2-0 day with a major decision win over Adam Allen. Kent State 26, Mercyhurst 12 125 Jake Ferri (Kent State) over Jacob Ruggeri (Mercyhurst) (MD 21-8) 4 0 133 Patrick Gould (Kent State) over Eric Bartos (Mercyhurst) (Dec 11-6) 7 0 141 Alexis Soriano (Mercyhurst) over Avry Mutschler (Kent State) (Dec 4-3) 7 3 149 Kody Komara (Kent State) over Alex Samson (Mercyhurst) (Dec 7-0) 10 3 157 Ian Senz (Kent State) over Spencer Head (Mercyhurst) (SV-1 6-4) 13 3 165 Mason Karpinski (Kent State) over Jason Breeden (Mercyhurst) (MD 18-9) 17 3 174 Trevor Johnson (Mercyhurst) over Mike Caniglia (Kent State) (Dec 4-2) 17 6 184 Joe Andrassy (Kent State) over Trever Begin (Mercyhurst) (SV-1 3-1) 20 6 197 Colin McCracken (Kent State) over Unknown (For.) 26 6 285 Jacob Robb (Mercyhurst) over Jacob Cover (Kent State) (Dec 3-2) 26 9 149 Extra: Raphael Rodriguez (Kent State) over Caiden Mooney (Mercyhurst) (Dec 8-6) 285 Extra: William Clark (Kent State) over Adam Allen (Mercyhurst) (MD 9-1) Kent State's dual record now sits at 2-2 on the year. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame was saddened to learn that Louis "Lou" Giani, a Distinguished Member inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003, passed away on Tuesday, at the age of 86. Louis "Lou" GianiA wake will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, at M.A. Connell Funeral Home in Huntington Station, New York, and a funeral service will be held on Monday, January 25, at 9:30 a.m. at St Hughs of Lincoln in Huntington Station, New York. "On behalf of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Board of Governors and staff, I want to express our sincere sympathies to the family, friends and countless wrestlers coached by Lou Giani," said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. "A great competitor as a wrestler, he became one of the most extraordinary coaches our sport has ever had, particularly at the youth and high school levels. His impact became known across the wrestling world in 2003 when he became one of only five high school coaches in history to be enshrined in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member." A virtually self-taught wrestler, Giani's competitive career did not begin until his junior year of high school. Defying the odds, he won an impressive 10 New York Athletic Club titles and more than 20 tournament titles in the United States. He won a gold medal at the Pan American Games in 1959 and was a member of the United States Olympic team in 1960. Although his Olympic participation was cut short by a serious infection, his passion for the sport propelled him into the coaching arena. Under Coach Giani's leadership, Huntington High School team captured nine New York state team titles, six tournament and three first-place state poll rankings. The fact that there is only one state tournament, with 600 programs participating, accentuates the magnitude of these accomplishments. He had a career coaching record of 436-36-1, including 28 undefeated seasons, in 40 seasons. Giani coached a Suffolk record 188 All-County wrestlers and a state record 23 state champions and 53 all-state wrestlers. Touted as the greatest high school wrestling coach in the state of New York, Giani was recognized by his peers three times as the New York Wrestling Coach of the Year and three times was chosen as the National High School Wrestling Coach of the Year, including 2002 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. He holds the distinction of being the first Suffolk County champion from Huntington High School while his son, Lou, Jr., was Huntington's first state champion. His youngest son, Joseph, was the school's first NCAA mat champion, capturing a Division III title while earning All-American honors three times for SUNY College at Brockport. Motivated by his commitment to wrestling, Giani pursued additional avenues to contribute to the sport. He launched two youth wrestling programs in Long Island, designed to generate interest, enthusiasm and participation, while working to provide numerous opportunities for underprivileged youth through wrestling. With wrestling as the backdrop, he worked the "Giani Magic" to instill values, work ethic and hope into the lives of young men, both on and off the mat. National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum America's shrine to the sport of wrestling, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum was founded as a nonprofit organization in 1976 to honor the sport of wrestling, preserve its history, recognize extraordinary individual achievements, and inspire future generations. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame has museums in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Waterloo, Iowa. The Stillwater, Oklahoma, location reopened in June 2016 following a $3.8 million renovation while the Waterloo, Iowa, location reopened in March 2019 after undergoing a $1.4 million renovation. Both museums now feature interactive exhibits and electronic kiosks, as well as the opportunity to watch NCAA Championship matches from the 1930s to present day. Stillwater also has the John T. Vaughan Hall of Honors where the greatest names in wrestling are recognized, including iconic granite plaques presented to Distinguished Members since the Hall of Fame opened in 1976. The museum has the largest collection of wrestling artifacts and memorabilia in the world, including the most collegiate and Olympic wrestling uniforms. Wrestling truly is for everyone and the diversity and accessibility of the sport continues to be highlighted through exhibits featuring females, African-Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and Latino Americans. There is also a library featuring historical documents, including NCAA guides and results, as well as books on the sport. For more information about the Hall of Fame, please visit www.NWHOF.org.

Fifth-ranked Brayton Lee of Minnesota is expected to face No. 6 Kaleb Young of Iowa Friday (Photo/Sam Janicki, SJanickiPhoto.com) It took a while for the collegiate wrestling season to return, and some teams are still not in action. However, the slate of dual meets this week offers several potential top matches. The following previews some of the best potential matches in each weight class. 125: Theorius Robinson (Northern Colorado) vs. No. 13 Trevor Mastrogiovanni (Oklahoma State) After a strong redshirt year at 133 pounds, Robinson has dropped down to 125 pounds for this season. During his redshirt year, he finished with a 9-3 and picked up a key victory over Montorie Bridges (Wyoming) on his way to the tournament title at the season-opening Cowboy Invitational. The former three-time Colorado state champion has lost his only match of the season against Taylor LaMont (Utah Valley), but he might still be primed to make a run at All-America status this season. Mastrogiovanni is a true freshman, but he has started all the way at 125 pounds for the Cowboys. He has been perfect so far on the way to a 4-0 record. His best win to date was a 7-4 decision over Oregon State's Brandon Kaylor. Mastrogiovanni wrestled on the high school level for Blair Academy where he was a three-time National Prep champion and finished with a 96-4 record. This is an early season match between two young wrestlers who could be facing off for years to come in the Big 12 Conference. Mastrogiovanni is probably the more complete wrestler at this point, so he should be the favorite in this match. However, Robinson is a dangerous wrestler in the neutral position, so he might make it interesting. Prediction: Mastrogiovanni decision over Robinson 133: No. 17 Matt Schmitt (Missouri) vs. Bryce West (Northern Illinois) Missouri has been perhaps the most active team so far this season, and Schmitt has benefitted from that schedule. He has already built a 5-1 record with victories over Devan Turner (Oregon State), Job Greenwood (Wyoming) and Kyle Biscoglia (Northern Iowa). After qualifying for the NCAA tournament during the 2019 season, Schmitt took a redshirt season last year. West qualified for the NCAA tournament as a redshirt freshman in 2019. Last season he went 23-11 yet missed out on qualification. So far this season, West has been on the edge of the rankings and is coming into this match after a victory over Drew Marten (Central Michigan). This battle of MAC rivals could be a preview of the conference tournament. West always seems to end up in high-scoring matches with his three matches so far this season averaging 13.33 total points scored. Schmitt has done a good job controlling the pace of his matches this season, so he should be able to take this decision, but this could be a wild match. Prediction: Schmitt decision over West 141: No. 12 Dylan Duncan (Illinois) vs. No. 20 Parker Filius (Purdue) Duncan did not compete in Illinois' successful action this past weekend, but the three-time NCAA qualifier picked up a fall in his only action so far this season as he bested Paul Konrath (Indiana) in 6:18. Last year, Duncan went 19-10 and qualified for the NCAA tournament through the Big Ten. During the season, he picked up key victories over Gabe Tagg (North Carolina) and No. 15 Dresden Simon (Central Michigan). Filius has yet to make his season debut for Purdue. He qualified for the NCAA tournament last season with a 19-10 record. At the Big Ten tournament, Filius picked up victories over Cole Mattin (Michigan) and Alec McKenna (Northwestern). These two are developing a bit of a rivalry. They met twice last season with Filius taking their first meeting via an 8-7 score. The rematch came at the Big Ten tournament. This time Duncan controlled the match and kept the scoring to a minimum. In the end, he took home a 3-1 decision. If this match happens, expect a similar result to their last meeting. Prediction: Duncan decision over Filius 149: No. 1 Austin O'Connor (North Carolina) vs. No. 19 Josh Finesilver (Duke) O'Connor enters this season as the favorite to win the 149-pound weight class. He went 25-1 last season with his only defeat coming against Iowa's Pat Lugo who would finish the season ranked No. 1 at the weight. In early December, O'Connor picked up a dominant freestyle victory over former NCAA champion Dean Heil. In his only action this season, he scored a 47-second fall over Jacson Muldrew (Gardner Webb). After qualifying for the NCAA tournament in back-to-back years, Finesilver took a redshirt year last season. During the year, he went 11-4 with key victories over No. 16 Tanner Smith (Chattanooga) and No. 12 Bryce Andonian (Virginia Tech). In his season debut, Finesilver scored a 9-5 victory over Luke Kemerer (Pittsburgh). If this match materializes, it will be the first meeting between the two. However, O'Connor does have an extensive history against Finesilver's brother Mitch. O'Connor holds a 3-2 record over that Finesilver with their last meeting coming at the 2019 NCAA tournament. O'Connor will likely be the favorite in all the matches he wrestles this season, but the family and Duke-North Carolina rivalries make this a hard match to miss. Prediction: O'Connor major decision over Finesilver 157: No. 5 Brayton Lee (Minnesota) vs. No. 6 Kaleb Young (Iowa) Lee moved up to 157 pounds after qualifying for the NCAAs last year at 149 pounds. He went 25-6 as a redshirt freshman and picked up key victories over Griffin Parriott (Purdue), Jarod Verkleeren (Penn State) and Sammy Sasso (Ohio State). So far this year, Lee has picked up three victories over Caleb Licking (Nebraska), Lucas Cordio (Maryland) and Chase Saldate (Michigan State). Young qualified for the NCAA tournament last year with a 15-5 record, but he had a tough Big Ten tournament that saw him go two and out. However, Young got back on track in his debut to this season. He scored a 17-5 victory over Licking. It was Young's first time scoring over seven points in his last 11 collegiate matches. This might be a competitive yet low scoring match. Both wrestlers excel defensively, so the first takedown could end up being the difference. Young should be a slight favorite despite the rankings due to his experience. However, neither wrestler winning should surprise anyone. Prediction: Young decision over Lee 165: No. 14 Andrew Sparks (Minnesota) vs. No. 2 Alex Marinelli (Iowa) Sparks has earned the starting spot for Minnesota in his first year on campus. Last year, on the high school level, he was a California state champion, and he scored a 7-1 victory over Cael Valencia in the finals. This season, he has gotten off to a strong start with three wins over No. 19 Peyton Robb (Nebraska), Jon Spadafora (Maryland) and No. 18 Jacob Tucker (Michigan State). Marinelli went 20-1 last year with his only defeat coming against rival Vincenzo Joseph (Penn State) in a wild match. With the return of No. 1 Mekhi Lewis (Virginia Tech) from redshirt, Marinelli enters this season in the second spot. His senior season got off to a solid start with a 9-3 decision over Robb last weekend. Sparks has looked the part since stepping on the mat as a true freshman. The level of competition takes a big step up here against Marinelli. The Iowa wrestler is a clear favorite in this match, but he does at times allow opponents to hang around. Look for Marinelli to dominate the ties, but Sparks might be able to keep it closer than expected. Prediction: Marinelli decision over Sparks 174: No. 15 Hayden Hastings (Wyoming) vs. No. 16 Trey Munoz (Arizona State) Hastings enters his junior season at Wyoming after qualifying as both a redshirt freshman and sophomore. Last year he went 23-10 and qualified through the Big 12 tournament with victories over Luke Weber (North Dakota State), Billy Higgins (Northern Colorado) and Scott Joll (West Virginia). This year, Hastings has started with four straight victories. Munoz went 13-2 during a redshirt season last year, but many of those victories came over wrestlers from lower divisions. Despite that, Munoz announced his presence with an 8-3 victory over No. 11 Anthony Mantanona (Oklahoma) in his first official match in an Arizona State singlet. If Munoz is able to pick up a second victory over a ranked wrestler in his second match, it will show that might be a true contender for All-America status at this weight. Hastings is certainly a tough out for most at this weight. Look for him to physically dominate this match, but Munoz might be able to excel in scrambles. Prediction: Hastings decision over Munoz 184: John Poznanski (Rutgers) vs. No. 11 Rocky Jordan (Ohio State) Poznanski comes to Rutgers after a successful high school career. He won a New Jersey state championship in 2020 and finished his career with 164 wins. Poznanski reached as high as third in the 182-pound high school rankings last year. In his first action this year he scored a 6-1 decision over Joseph Walker (Michigan) in Rutgers' dual meet. Jordan became a somewhat surprising starter for Ohio State at 184 pounds last year. After starting the year at 174, he eventually moved up and assumed the starting role in mid-January. From there, he picked up victories over Zach Braunagel (Illinois), Tyler Dow (Wisconsin), Taylor Venz (Minnesota) and Max Lyon (Purdue). He then qualified for the NCAA tournament. So far this year, Jordan has dropped a rematch against Braunagel and defeated Chris Weiler (Wisconsin). Poznanski should be a clear underdog in this match. The adjustment to college wrestling can be tougher at the higher weight classes. However, he showed in his lone match this year that he can score from all positions. Look for Jordan to take this decision, but Poznanski has a chance to make a big statement. Prediction: Jordan decision over Poznanski 197: No. 2 Eric Schultz (Nebraska) vs. No. 11 Lucas Davison (Northwestern) Schultz justified his ranking last weekend with yet another victory over No. 4 Jacob Warner (Iowa). Warner won their first two collegiate meetings, but Schultz won last year's match up as well as the most recent. The Nebraska wrestler went 23-4 last season and defeated the likes of Shakur Rasheed (Penn State), Greg Bulsak (Clarion) and Jordan Pagano (Rutgers). Davison has not wrestled yet this season, but he should be a contender in the Big Ten when he finally joins the ranks this year. Last year, he made a strong run through the conference to qualify for the NCAA tournament. He finished with a 17-8 record and scored key victories over Christian Brunner (Purdue), Jackson Striggow (Michigan) and Cordell Eaton (North Dakota State). Schutlz has made improvements since joining the Nebraska lineup, and he might be in serious contention for an NCAA title this season. Davison is certainly a challenge and has picked up some upsets in the past. However, Schultz's ability to control matches and score when he needs the points will be the difference here. Prediction: Schutlz decision over Davison 285: No. 15 John Borst (Virginia Tech) vs. No. 20 Quinn Miller (Virginia) Borst started his college career at 197 pounds, but he moved up to heavyweight after a redshirt year. In his second year at the weight, he broke through and qualified for the NCAA tournament. This year, he is back and looking for his first ACC title, and he is currently the highest ranked heavyweight in the conference. He started this season with three straight wins including back-to-back technical falls over Jacob Cover (Kent State) and Jacob Padilla (Ohio). Miller also qualified last season for the NCAA tournament through the ACC. He went 19-7 and picked up bonus points in half of his matches. So far this year, he has built a 4-1 record. However, in his last match, he dropped a 2-0 decision against conference opponent Deonte Wilson (North Carolina State). These two met last season in this rivalry dual. At the time, Borst was the favorite, but Miller ended up taking the 6-4 decision. Since then, Borst has continued to learn on the job. If he is able to stay out of trouble on his leg attacks and finish clean, he should be able to reverse that defeat and maintain his status as the favorite for the ACC title. Prediction: Borst decision over Miller

The Tokyo Olympic Games, which were postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, are unlikely to happen, according to Keith Mills, former chief executive of the London 2012 Olympics. "Personally, sitting here looking at the pandemic around the world, it looks unlikely I have to say," Mills told Radio 5 Live's Wake Up To Money. Tokyo is in its second state of emergency after a surge of coronavirus cases and about 4,500 deaths. "If I was sitting in the shoes of the organizing committee in Tokyo, I would be making plans for a cancellation and I'm sure they have plans for a cancellation. They've got another month or so before they need to make a call." Earlier this week, Japanese cabinet minister Taro Kono said "it could go either way" when asked if the Tokyo Olympics would be held. A recent poll showed that about 80% of the Japanese public believes the Olympic Games either will not happen or should not happen. Only five Olympics have ever been canceled. The Summer Games in 1916, 1940 and 1944 were canceled, as well as the Winter Games in 1940 and 1944. The IOC has stated the Olympics will not be postponed again and would be canceled if the Games are unable to happen in 2021. Despite the growing concerns in Japan about whether the Olympics will go ahead in 2021, the Japanese government remains committed to holding the Games in 2021. "We have decided the venues and schedule, and the people involved are working on preparations including infection control," Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said. Japan's top government spokesman has stated that widespread distribution of coronavirus vaccines is not a prerequisite for moving forward with the Tokyo Games. Erica Wiebe, a 2016 Olympic champion in women's wrestling for Canada, believes frontline workers and vulnerable people should receive vaccines before Olympic athletes. "I think the Olympic movement stands in its purity for a lot more than just putting athletes on stage to entertain the world," Wiebe told the CBC. "The most important people that need to get the vaccine are front-line workers, those most at risk and people in long-term care homes -- they are the ones that need to be prioritized." Over 15,000 athletes from more than 200 different countries are scheduled to compete at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, which begin July 23. The wrestling competition is set for Aug. 1-7.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Lehigh's wrestling match versus Drexel, scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 24 at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall has been canceled. The cancellation comes as a result of Drexel's return to campus and resocialization guidelines, which will not afford Drexel sufficient training time in order to compete on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks will return to action when they host Binghamton on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The dual will be televised locally on Service Electric Network and streamed at Lehighsports.com/watch.

The 2021 NCAA Division I wrestling season has progressed through another exciting weekend of live action with a plethora dual meet, triangulars and quadrangulars. The action we saw on the mat this weekend surely didn't disappoint, rather it made us hungry for more. Not all of InterMat's top-25 teams were in action, most notably the No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions, who had a match with No. 17 Rutgers on Saturday cancelled due to a positive COVID-19 test among Tier 1 personnel at Penn State. Still, there was plenty of noteworthy developments in NCAA wrestling this weekend. Here are five takeaways from this past weekend (Jan. 15-17) in college wrestling. West Virginia's Noah Adams is currenty ranked No. 1 at 197 pounds (Photo/WVU Athletics) West Virginia's Noah Adams was tested against Oklahoma's Jake Woodley While Oklahoma came away with a dominant 21-9 victory Sunday (that probably wasn't even as close as the score indicates) in its first conference meet of the season, there was one particularly compelling match at 197 pounds between redshirt junior and top-ranked Noah Adams and fellow redshirt junior No. 12 Jake Woodley. The Big 12 foes have a bit of history between them. This matchup was the fourth time overall and the third time the duo met in dual action. Prior to tonight, Woodley held a 2-1 record against Adams. However, it was Adams who came out on top last season, earning a 6-1 decision in dual action. The last time Woodley captured a win over Adams was at the 2019 Big 12 Wrestling Championship. In the fourth installment, Adams came out on top, winning 3-2. With the match tied 2-2 entering the final frame, the Sooner elected to give the Mountaineer an escape point via optional start, shifting the score to 3-2 with a period left to play. Obviously, Woodley felt more confident in his ability to take down No. 1 Adams rather than ride him out or turn him. Interestingly enough, Adams fended off every Woodley attack and during the final two minutes and won the match by that same 3-2 margin. Now, the series record between the two sits tied at 2-2. Adams and Woodley will likely meet at the conference tournament and NCAAs. It will be interesting to see how Woodley approaches a tight match with Adams next time. Will tonight's defeat make the Sooner think twice about giving the reigning Big 12 champ and 2020 NWCA All-American a free point? Or will he try a new strategy? With the win, Adams has extended his individual match winning streak to 37 in a row dating back to Nov. 3, 2019. Iowa looked dominant It's no secret that the Iowa Hawkeyes are probably the team that has the best chance to dethrone the Nittany Lions, who have won eight of the last nine team crowns. The Hawks, who were the 2020 Big Ten Tournament champions, return the vast majority of a 2020 lineup that was flush with NWCA All-Americans and preseason top seeds at their respective weights, including Spencer Lee (125), Jaydin Eierman (141) and Michael Kemerer (174). Iowa won its matchup with top-10 conference foe Nebraska, 31-6, winning eight of the ten individual bouts. Iowa's only losses were at 174 pounds (where the nation's No. 1 wrestler didn't compete) and at 197 pounds in a battle of top-four ranked wrestlers. All this to say, Iowa adequately defended its top team ranking after its first match. Ugh ... COVID-19 reared its ugly head The reigning 2019 NCAA team champions didn't get to take to the mat this weekend due to a positive coronavirus test within its program. Not only is this significant because we didn't get to see some of the best names in the sport compete this weekend as planned, but also it just goes to show how unpredictable (and potentially unfair) this season could be depending on how present (or absent) COVID-19 is over the next two months. In a COVID-19-influenced season, the best individual wrestlers and the most complete teams may not be able to live up to their full potential due to the virus and its (potential) impact. Similarly, some lesser wrestlers and teams may outperform expectations due to the virus and its (potential) impact as well. If nothing else, we should remain fortunate for every upcoming weekend where we get to either attend an event or watch one from afar. Additionally, we should remember how quicky we can (and did) have this great sport taken away last year. Hopefully, Penn State won't be down long because the 2021 Nittany Lions squad appears to have reloaded its talent. There are currently nine Penn Staters ranked in the InterMat top-25, including four freshman newcomers. And, most importantly, the sport is better when a powerhouse, top-five programs are involved. How about those freshmen? The 2021 season has been (and likely will continue to be) one of the stranger college seasons in recent memory. That said, thus far, my favorite part of the season has been watching a handful of true freshmen get to show their stuff as true freshman. Unfortunately, in traditional season, fans usually have to wait an extra year to see a majority of the freshman class. As InterMat pointed out in an article last week, there are rookies contributing to some of the top teams in the nation. Many of these names mentioned further validated their presence on the list of 12 this weekend as well, including: A.J. Ferrari, Trevor Mastrogiovanni, Andrew Sparks, Dylan Ragusin and others. The performances by Oklahoma State first-year's Ferrari and Mastrogiovanni were even more meaningful as they helped put head coach John Smith in third place on the all-time Division I coaching wins list with 443.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Oklahoma wrestling team got into the win column on Sunday afternoon by defeating Bucknell 29-9 and West Virginia 21-9 at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. The Sooners' (2-1, 1-0) night was highlighted by pins from Mitch Moore and Josh Heindselman, in addition to Mason Naifeh's top-20 win and first of his Oklahoma career. After Sunday's tri-meet, Oklahoma boasts four undefeated (3-0) wrestlers in its starting lineup. With the win over West Virginia, the Sooners notch their first win to open conference play since 2016. "I thought a lot of our guys did a nice job today and it's always good to work on winning habits," head coach Lou Rosselli said. "Our guys that did well can start to take the next step by focusing for the full seven minutes and getting more bonus points for us. But at the end of the day, winning is habitual and the more that you do it, the more it'll happen." Starting the day off for the Sooners was Tommy Hoskins (1-2) at 125 pounds vs. Bucknell's Brandon Seidman. Hoskins entered the third period locked in a 2-2 tie but surrendered an escape and takedown to drop the match 5-3. Mason Naifeh (1-1) got his first win as a Sooner in Oklahoma's second dual of the day when he defeated No. 17 Killian Cardinale with a last-second takedown to win 3-1. The OU redshirt senior battled the Mountaineer the entire match, fending off shots from Cardinale and was able to circle around the WVU 125-pounder's last attempt to secure the win. Naifeh's win marked the start of a five-match winning streak for the Sooners vs. West Virginia. At 133, No. 11 Tony Madrigal (1-2) lost his first bout via 4-1 decision to Bucknell's Darren Miller. But the junior was able to get back on track vs. the Mountaineers when he took care of business vs. Joey Thomas, earning a convincing 4-1 decision. No. 6 Dom Demas (3-0) continued to show why he is considered one of the country's top wrestlers. Demas, ranked sixth nationally, won a major decision (16-5) over Bucknell's Kurt Phipps and followed that performance with an 8-3 win over WVU's Jeffrey Boyd. His two wins on Sunday marked his 14th and 15th wins in his last 16 matches dating back to last season. Making just his second appearance in the Crimson and Cream, No. 13 Mitch Moore (3-0) won via fall (0:25) in his bout with Logan Sanom from Bucknell. Moore's pin after 25 seconds marks the 17th and fastest win via fall of his career. The win gave the Sooners a lead vs. the Bison that they wouldn't surrender. In his second match of the day, Moore had to work to secure a 4-2 decision over WVU's Brayden Roberts. Reigning Big 12 wrestler of the Week Justin Thomas improved to 3-0 on the season by defeating Nick Delp (7-5) and Walker Heard (8-2). The redshirt senior, who is ranked 13th nationally, has been on a tear for the Sooners, winning 15 of his last 19 matches. Jake Stiles (0-3) dropped a pair of tough bouts vs. ranked opponents, losing 8-2 and 2-1 to No. 9 Zach Hartman and No. 24 Peyton Hall, respectively. No. 9 Anthony Mantanona (3-0) righted the ship at 174 pounds for the Sooners by winning his first match via a 6-2 decision over Bucknell's Frankie Guida and a dominating 13-7 win over Scott Joll. Darrien Roberts split his Sunday matches to move to 2-1 on the year. Both matches were close, as the Oklahoma sophomore beat Sam Barnes, 4-3, before dropping his match with Anthony Carman, 7-6. At 197 pounds, No. 13 Jake Woodley (1-2) brought the pressure in his first test of the day, earning bonus points for the Sooners by winning 16-5 over Mason McCready. In the WVU dual, the redshirt junior battled with No. 1 Noah Adams but couldn't score a last-minute takedown to win, dropping the match 3-2. His decision over McCready marked the 40th win of his career. Josh Heindselman (2-1) picked up his first collegiate victory in dramatic fashion when he pinned Bucknell's Dorian Crosby after 4:40. He then turned around to defeat West Virginia's Michael Wolfgram and move to 2-1 on the young season. Next up for the Sooners is No. 21 Northern Iowa and No. 10 Iowa State in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Sunday, Jan. 24. The format will be similar to the WVU-tri that the Sooners competed in this weekend. LITTLE ROCK, ARK. -- Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith moved past Gary Taylor and into third place on the all-time Division I coaching wins list with two victories Sunday in the Cowboys' road trip to Little Rock. OSU started the day with a dominating 38-0 victory over SIU-Edwardsville. The shutout marked the first time the Cowboys have held an opponent scoreless since Feb. 8, 2019 against Air Force. It is also the highest-scoring dual for the Pokes since the same 39-0 defeat of the Falcons. Jalin Harper picked up his first dual win as a Cowboy and first ranked win of his career with a 6-1 decision over No. 18 Justin Ruffin. The Cowboys strung together three consecutive bonus-point wins starting with an 11-3 major decision from Dustin Plott at 174 pounds and technical falls from Dakota Geer and AJ Ferrari. Taking a 10-2 lead into the third period, Geer took down Ryan Yarnell five times in the period, cutting him loose after each takedown, with his last coming with one second on the clock. Ferrari was on the attack throughout his match getting two takedowns and two four-point near falls in a span of 1:21 seconds to separate the score and secure his tech fall over Austin Andres. Trevor Mastrogiovanni got the day started for Oklahoma State with an 8-1 victory over Austin Macias. Andrew Nieman won via forfeit at 133 pounds, while Kaid Brock and Boo Lewallen won close matches. Travis Wittlake followed Harper's win at 157 with a dominating 9-2 victory of his own and Austin Harris finished off the Cowboy shutout with his second-consecutive sudden victory win. Smith picked up win No. 443 with a 36-4 win over Little Rock in the Cowboys' second dual of the day. When asked about the significance of the win, he grinned. "It feels about the same as last week," Smith said. The Cowboys separated the score with a run of five-consecutive bonus-point victories beginning with the 157 pound bout and ending at 197 pounds with AJ Ferrari. Jalin Harper capped off his day with an 11-3 major decision of Noah Aziere followed by another major decision from fourth-ranked Travis Wittlake. Dustin Plott attacked early and often and picked up his first career fall with a first-period pin of Triston Wills. Following Plott, Dakota Geer defeated Zane Davis with a 19-3 second-period tech fall. AJ Ferrari concluded the run of bonus-point wins with a 22-7 tech fall. Ferrari took down Little Rock's Dylan Johnson eight times in the match, letting him loose after each one en route to his victory. The freshman duo of Plott and Ferrari have won via bonus points in each of their eight matches combined. Austin Harris stayed undefeated at heavyweight with another down-to-the-wire victory. The redshirt junior trailed 4-3 heading into the third period, but scored an escape to tie the score and a last-second takedown to win a 6-4 decision over Gabe Beyer. Mastrogiovanni, Brock and Lewallen continued their undefeated with wins via decision over their Trojan opponents. COLUMBIA, Mo. -- No. 9 Mizzou Wrestling (7-0) continued its dominance to start the 2021 campaign Sunday afternoon with a pair of dual victories over nationally ranked foes. The Tigers opened their day with a 34-6 triumph over No. 20 Northern Iowa, followed by a 31-7 win against No. 10 Iowa State. Mizzou simply overpowered the Panthers and Cyclones grapplers, winning 16-of-20 overall matches on the day. Five of the Tigers' individual victories occurred against nationally ranked wrestlers, highlighted by 141-pound redshirt junior Allan Hart toppling No. 4 Ian Parker of Iowa State. Additionally, eight of Mizzou's wins Sunday resulted in bonus points. 165-pound freshman Keegan O'Toole tallied a technical fall and fall in his two victories, while 184-pound redshirt sophomore Jeremiah Kent produced a fall and major decision. HEAR FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN SMITH On the Tigers' dominance over the Panthers and Cyclones… "We wrestled two really good teams and we won a lot of tight matches. We gutted out some very tough wins. We had guys stepping up across the lineup and getting bonus points. We had guys finding a way to win and that's important this time of the year. We're going to continue to get better and have a lot of things to work on. To walk out of Hilton Coliseum with two ranked dual wins, that's pretty big." HEAR FROM 141-POUND REDSHIRT JUNIOR ALLAN HART On his 2-0 afternoon, including triumph over No. 4 ranked opponent… "It was really good. That first match against Northern Iowa, I got my pace going. In the second match versus Iowa State, it was really huge. He was ranked fourth in the country. I don't like to play into the rankings, because anything can happen on any given day, but beating someone that highly ranked and established was really cool." The Tigers have yet to allow an opponent to score double-digit points in a dual. Additionally, Mizzou has surpassed 30-plus points in six of its seven duals thus far this season. The Tigers have now toppled Northern Iowa in eight of their past 11 historical meetings. While Iowa State still holds an eye-opening 44-11 all-time series lead over Mizzou, the Tigers hold recent bragging rights behind a current six-dual winning streak following Sunday's victory. Following respective perfect 2-0 afternoons in Ames, Iowa, Mizzou's Hart, 149-pound junior Brock Mauller, O'Toole, 165-pound redshirt sophomore Peyton Mocco, Kent and 197-pound freshman Rocky Elam all still possess unblemished records this season. UP NEXT Mizzou returns to the friendly confines of the Hearnes Center next Saturday (Jan. 23) for a tri-dual against Mid-American Conference foes Northern Illinois and Ohio. Action kicks off in Mid-Missouri at noon CT. -
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan wrestling coach Tom Borrelli has long been an advocate of aggressiveness and fast starts. His Chippewas delivered on Sunday, winning six matches and scoring bonus points in three of them in downing Northern Illinois, 22-14, in a Mid-American Conference wrestling dual at McGuirk Arena. The win lifted CMU to 2-2, 1-1 MAC. NIU is 2-1, 1-1. CMU's Drew Hildebrandt (125 pounds) set the tone for the dual, winning the opening bout by technical fall to put the Chippewas up 5-0. CMU then sandwiched major-decision victories from Dresden Simon (141) and Johnny Lovett (157) around a decision win by Corbyn Munson (149) in building a 16-3 lead. "We felt like we had to get off to a good start because if things didn't go well for us early it was going to be pretty close towards the end," Borrelli said. "I think there were a few times where we were watching the clock a little bit and not continuing to wrestle, trying to hang on to win. You can't be successful that way. If you're not trying to build on your lead, you're kind of setting yourself up for bad things to happen." Still, he said, "We were pressing the pace for the most part in the third period." After Lovett's win, his first of the season and the first of his career in a dual, Northern Illinois won three straight matches to cut CMU's lead to 16-14 with two matches remaining. The Huskie lineup features four ranked wrestlers in the final five weight classes. With fourth-ranked and two-time All-American Matt Stencel waiting at 285 for the Chippewas, the 197-pound match between CMU's Landon Pelham and 21st-ranked Gage Braun was critical. Pelham, a senior, remained aggressive throughout, scoring the first takedown and never relinquishing the lead. He posted a 7-3 victory made all the sweeter by the fact that the last time the two met, Braun took down Pelham at the buzzer to win the third-place match at the 2020 MAC Championships. With the cancellation of the NCAA Championships last March, the loss to Braun was Pelham's final match of the 2020 season. "It's been hard to forget about that match from last year, got to think about it a lot," said Pelham, who went 0-2 last weekend in CMU's double-dual with Missouri and Wyoming. "Definitely fueled a lot of my offseason training. You don't ever want to feel like that again. Felt good to get out and wrestle today and feel like myself again after last weekend too." Pelham's win put CMU in front, 19-14, and then the fourth-ranked Stencel, a two-time All-American, downed 25th-ranked Max Ihry, 6-2, to close it out. Pelham's victory was big not only on a personal level, but in the dual overall. Had he lost, Stencel's match would have been a must-win. "I don't like to put all the pressure on Matt all the time," said Pelham, who has wrestled in the weight class ahead of the three-time MAC champion Stencel since the two veterans set foot on campus half a decade ago. "We've been doing this together for five years and he lets me know before I go wrestle, 'Hey you go out, relax, just wrestle your match, don't worry about the dual.' "He's always got my back like that. It's nice having a guy like that behind you. You can go out and you don't have to do anything crazy. Just do your thing." Big Win For Lovett Lovett, a redshirt freshman from Miami, Fla., was the aggressor from the hop in his match with Anthony Gibson. Lovett had six takedowns in the match, three of which came in the first period, and the last of which came with under 10 seconds remaining to give him the major-decision victory. "I was really impressed with Johnny," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "We thought that Johnny would be pretty explosive against (Gibson) and he would have a hard time defending (Lovett's) shots. He really took it to him. We know (Gibson) has a big gas tank and Johnny hung in there and matched it." Bonus Points • Hildebrandt's technical fall was his second such victory of the season as he improved to 4-0. He is ranked sixth nationally. • Simon, who is ranked 12th, scored a takedown and a four-point near fall in the first period in his match for a 6-0 lead and remained in control throughout. It was his first bonus-point win of the season as he improved to 2-1. • Munson, a redshirt sophomore, held on for a slim 3-1 win to improve to 3-1 on the season. Exhibition Matches The Chippewas won all six exhibition matches. Brock Bergelin (133) posted an 11-2 major-decision victory over Michael Kaminski and Hunter Watts (141) also won by major decision, 12-3 over Nicholas Termini. Mason Breece (149) dec. Dillon Nichols, 4-0; Tracy Hubbard (157) dec. Tristin Guaman, 6-0; Aaron Bolo (197); and Cade Dallwitz (285) dec. Johnny Shafer, 6-1. WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Army West Point wrestling team welcomed conference opponent Hofstra University to Gillis Field House on Sunday afternoon for their second dual matchup of the year. Army commanded another dominant victory on home turf, moving past the Pride 30-18. The Black Knights had an early 6-0 advantage right from the beginning as the Pride had to take a forfeit at 125lbs. Hofstra returned the favor at 133lbs to tie the match 6-6 after Garret Lambert secured a fall at 2:52 over Mark Montgomery. Army used the loss as momentum, notching victories in the next two bouts. Logan Brown wrestled his way to a powerful 13-4 major decision victory to increase the Black Knight's lead. P.J. Ogunsanya then grabbed his second pin of the season against Hofstra's Charles Kane. The junior took a quick 10-0 lead in the first only to overpower Kane for a fall at 2:10, giving Army a 16-6 advantage. Despite a tough loss in the 157lb slot to move the score back within four, Beau Guffey wrestled his way to a 6-1 decision against Reece Heller. The Pride were able to move the score to the closest margin of the day (19-18) at 174lbs. Brad Laughlin was able to hold on to a 2-1 lead through two periods but saw defeat at the hands of Ross McFarland with only seconds remaining. The Black Knights final three bouts proved to be the guiding force to a victory with strong performances from Taylor Brown, J.T. Brown and Ben Sullivan. Taylor Brown came out hot against Charles Small, putting a quick seven points on the board in the first. Brown would take an injury default victory over Small only :17 seconds into the second, allowing Army to increase their lead to 25-18. J.T. Brown and Ben Sullivan closed out the day for the Black Knights at 197lbs and 285lbs respectively; Brown taking a 3-2 decision from Trey Rogers and Sullivan a 4-0 decision over Zack Knighton Ward. After the Black Knights and the Pride competed in their 10 bouts, the two teams squared up for an additional seven matches. The seven matches didn't count towards either team score but will be reflected in the individual's overall records. It looked to me like we had some matches where we weren't expecting them to fight as hard as they did and we didn't answer the right way when things got tough. When you don't match your opponents intensity bad things can happen and some bad things happened to us today. Pretty obvious to me that I didn't have our team prepared and that's on me. Bottom line, we have to be a much tougher team top to bottom. But I did like the energy I saw out of PJ and Taylor Brown. Both guys looked excited to compete and picked up bonus point wins. Taylor's came at a time in the dual when we really needed it. And Ben Sullivan got a big win over a very tough opponent. So we did have a few brights spots. Overall, today is a wake up call for our team and our coaching staff. We have to do better." The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team posted two wins in a tri-meet at Gardner-Webb today. The Mocs defeated The Citadel 17-15 and Gardner-Webb 23-13 to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Southern Conference action. Gardner-Webb is an affiliate member of the SoCon in wrestling and hosted the matches in Boiling Springs, N.C. Both were broadcast on ESPN+ with links to the replay temporarily available at the top of the page. "We have to get better in the hard positions and fighting through them," stated head coach Kyle Ruschell. "We also have to better with our basics, getting to our ties and our finishes. We had some guys competing hard and some others that need to step up an continue to get better." There was lots of excitement throughout the day. The result was still up in the air in the final match of both duals. Despite missing the services of starting juniors Tanner Smith (149) and Hunter Fortner (174), who were both out with injuries, UTC still managed to take both contests. Senior Fabian Gutierrez, junior Franco Valdes and freshman Logan Andrew led the Mocs with two wins each. Gutierrez entered the weekend No. 19 in the Flo rankings at 125 pounds. He posted bonus points with major decisions in both matches. Up next for the Mocs is another SoCon tri-meet at Davidson on Jan. 23. UTC faces the host Wildcats and VMI in SoCon action next weekend. Chattanooga 17 - The Citadel 15 157: Weston Wichman (UTC) over Grant Speer (CIT) (MD 11-3) 165: Andrew Nicholson (UTC) over Dazjon Casto (CIT) (Dec 5-3) 174: Cole Burke (CIT) over Carial Tarter (UTC) (Dec 8-4) 184: Kyle Kretzer (CIT) over No. 12 Matthew Waddell (UTC) (Dec 6-1) 197: Logan Andrew (UTC) over Ben Stemmet (CIT) (Dec 10-3) 285: Michael McAleavey (CIT) over Grayson Walthall (UTC) (Dec 3-1) 125: No. 19 Fabian Gutierrez (UTC) over Jordie White (CIT) (MD 11-2) 133: Jake Rotunda (CIT) over Colton Landers (UTC) (Dec 8-4) 141: Franco Valdes (UTC) over Ethan Willis (CIT) (Dec 10-4) 149: Selwyn Porter (CIT) over Aidan Murphy (UTC) (Dec 5-2) Bonus points proved to be the difference in the match against The Citadel. Each team won five bouts, but the Mocs got major decisions from freshman Weston Wichman at 157 and Gutierrez at 125. Wichman opened the match with an 11-3 win over Grant Speer. Junior Drew Nicholson followed that with a nice 5-3 decision against Dazjon Casto. Nicholson came into the match with a 2-2 record against Casto. He gave up an early takedown and over 2:30 in riding time in the first period. However, he used two takedowns of his own to erase over 90 seconds of that riding time on his way to the win. Sophomore Carial Tarter moved up to 174 and nearly pulled off a win. He was leading 4-3 late in the match against Cole Burke, but gave up four nearfall points to drop an 8-4 decision. The Citadel had a big upset at 184 when Kyle Kretzer scored a 6-1 win over No. 12 Matthew Waddell. Andrew came right back with a 10-3 win at 197. Gutierrez had over five minutes of riding time in his 11-2 major decision against Jordie White. Valdes came out hot with three takedowns in the first period against Ethan Willis. He went on to score 10-4 decision to give the Mocs a 17-12 advantage. In the final match of the dual, junior Aidan Murphy moved up to 149 and took on 2020 NCAA Qualifier Selwyn Porter. The Citadel needed a pin to win and a tech fall to force criteria, but Murphy wrestled hard. He was in a 2-2 tie early in the third before Porter posted a 5-2 decision. UTC took the match 17-15. Wichman dropped a one-point match to Taylor Parks at 157, followed by Nicholson giving up a major decision (12-4) to RJ Mosely. Tarter looked like he was also going to give up a major, but a late reversal closed the game to 12-5. Waddell put UTC on the board with a 6-2 decision over Evan Schenk. Andrew close the game to 10-6 with a 7-5 decision at 197. Junior Grayson Walthall had one of his best matches, scoring a 19-0 tech fall over Gabriel Pickett. His first-period win gave UTC an 11-10 lead. Gutierrez stretched the Chattanooga advantage to 15-10 with a 12-0 major decision over Austin Wadlow. The Runnin' Bulldogs made it interesting when Todd Carter posted a 10-7 decision over Colton Landers. That closed the gap to 15-13 with two matches left. Valdes an Majette were in a battle at 141, with Valdes leading 5-2 in the closing seconds. He caught Majette off guard and put him on his back with just under 20 seconds left. He did not get the fall, but the six-point move gave him an 11-3 major decision. That win gave UTC a six-point 19-13 lead with one match left. Both competitors at 149 moved up a weight for the final bout of the day. Junior Aidan Murphy scored a 3-2 win over Brandon Bright to close out he dual and a 23-13 win.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team picked up its third straight lopsided win to start the season, taking eight of 10 matches to defeat Indiana, 32-6, on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 17) at Cliff Keen Arena. U-M earned bonus points in three matches, including pins from sixth-year senior Logan Massa and junior Mason Parris. Massa and Parris, ranked second nationally at 174 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, earned their third straight bonus wins in as many matches on the season. Massa used a cement mixer to pin DJ Washington at the 6:38 mark after a pair of four-point bow-and-arrow turns in the second and third frames. It was his first fall of the season. Parris stuck the Hoosiers' Rudy Streck with a crusher at 2:06 for his second straight pin. Parris led the Wolverines in falls each of the previous two seasons. Freshman Jaden Bullock picked up Michigan's other bonus win with a 16-0 technical fall over Drayton Harris in his dual debut at 184 pounds. Bullock, who weighed in at 174, broke the match open early with three four-point tilts in the first period and used a scramble to spin behind for the match-ending takedown at 3:48. Bullock is the third U-M true freshman to earn his first collegiate win this season and the fourth Wolverine to earn his first dual-meet win. Freshman Dylan Ragusin, ranked 10th at 125 pounds, toughed a 6-4 decision against 14th-ranked Brock Hudkins in the marquee match of the dual. The wrestlers traded takedowns in the first period before Ragusin used a lengthy ride in the second to accumulate time advantage -- he finished with 1:22 -- and added an escape and stall point in the third. It win was Ragusin's second over a ranked opponent this season. Sophomore/freshman Cameron Amine, ranked 16th, opened the dual with an 8-3 decision against Nick South to similarly stay unbeaten in his Keen Arena debut. Amine earned three takedowns -- two in the first period -- and accumulated 1:48 in riding-time advantage. The Wolverines also closed the dual with three straight decisions. Senior/junior Drew Mattin used a big first period, scrambling into a double leg and tacking on a four-point bar tilt early, to defeat Kyle Luigs, 11-6, at 141 pounds. Fifth-year senior Kanen Storr, ranked sixth, scored takedowns in the first and third periods to beat Luke Baughman, 5-2, at 149 pounds, while junior/sophomore Will Lewan, ranked eighth, defeated his former high school teammate Matt Ortiz, 8-3, with three -- one per period -- and 1:21 riding-time advantage. The Wolverines (3-0) will have a weekend off before resuming with their first of back-to-back tri-meets, taking on Iowa and Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Iowa City, Iowa. CHAMPAIGN, Ill -- Illinois picked up two wins in Sunday's tri-meet at State Farm Center, defeating No. 8 Ohio State, 18-15, and Wisconsin, 21-9. Several key match wins helped the Illini secure both victories, including two-win days for multiple Illini wrestlers. The Illini are now 3-0 on the season following the two victories. "Two great wins today," said Illinois head coach Jim Heffernan. "Luffman, Wroblewski and Byrd were outstanding. Pucino ended up being a last minute starter due to an injury and wrestled lights out. Really proud of our effort across the board - guys are wrestling with great energy. We are moving in the right direction." Lucas Byrd, Daniel Pucino, Danny Braunagel, Matt Wroblewski, and Luke Luffman all provided a spark for the Illini, all coming out with victories in both of their matches on the day. Luffman notched two top-ten wins, defeating Wisconsin's No. 5 Trent Hillger and Ohio State's No. 6 Tate Orndorff. Freshman Danny Pucino was extremely impressive in his Illini debut, racking up two wins on the afternoon. The freshman competed at 141-pounds, defeating Wisconsin's Dominic Dentino in a 10-4 decision in his first match, and Ohio State's Dylan D'Emilio in a 12-7 decision in his second. ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- On a night in which nine of the 10 bouts were decided by three points or less, Navy found a way to win most of the close ones. No. 18 Lehigh raced out to an early 6-0 lead before the Mids rallied to win seven of the final eight bouts to top the Mountain Hawks 21-9 Saturday night at Alumni Hall. A one-point win at 157 and a 2-0 decision at 165 helped Navy to its first win over Lehigh since 2011. The loss for the Mountain Hawks (0-2) snaps a nine-dual win streak in the series. Lehigh still maintains a 53-48 lead after Saturday's 101st meeting. Navy moves to 2-1 with the victory. Lehigh used strong work in the top position to take the first two bouts without the benefit of a takedown. At 125, junior Jaret Lane worked an escape after being ridden for the first 1:15 of the second period and then answered by riding out Logan Treaster in the third to win 1-0. Freshman Malyke Hines followed by riding out the second period in his match at 133 against Jacob Allen and added an escape early in the third period to win 2-0. At 141, freshman Connor McGonagle picked up Lehigh's first takedown of the dual and led Navy captain Cody Trybus 2-1 after the first period, but Trybus answered with an escape, a takedown and a strong ride in the second period and went on to win 5-3 to put Navy on the scoreboard. The Mids evened things up after 149 as Casey Cobb scored a first period takedown and added a counter takedown late on a desperation attempt by junior Jimmy H0offman as Cobb prevailed 5-2. The wildest bout of the dual came at 157 where sophomore AJ Burkhart made his first-ever dual appearance against Andrew Cerniglia. After a scoreless first period, Burkhart was turned for two near fall points early in the second period before reversing Cerniglia onto his back for two-plus-four. Cerniglia reversed back before a Burkhart escape put him up 7-4 after two periods. Cerniglia reversed to open the third period, gained riding time advantage and after a Burkhart escape scored the decisive takedown with 25 seconds left and kept Burkhart down to win 9-8 and give the Mids the lead. Eighth-ranked Tanner Skidgel made it four straight wins for Navy with a 2-0 decision over Brian Meyer at 165. Skidgel escaped in the second period and rode out the third. Freshman Jake Logan stopped the Navy run with a 7-4 decision over Drew Caravela at 174. Logan scored a takedown in each period plus a third period escape. Navy's David Key won a battle of true freshmen against Lehigh's JT Davis at 184 by a 5-2 decision. Key scored a second period takedown to lead 3-1 after two and countered a Davis attempt late. The Midshipmen clinched their first win over Lehigh in 10 years at 197 as Jacob Koser defeated senior Jake Jakobsen 6-1. Koser scored a first period takedown and countered strong rides by Jakobsen in both the second and third periods with reversals. In the final bout of the dual, junior heavyweight Victor Lacombe dropped a 3-1 decision to Navy's John Birchmeier. The dual itself featured just 12 combined takedowns, with Navy holding an 8-4 edge. The Mids led 4-1 in reversals, while each side had one near fall, Lehigh's a four-pointer and Navy's a two-pointer. Six of the 10 bouts saw no scoring in the opening three minutes. Lehigh and Navy also wrestled 21 extra matches Saturday evening, the results of which count towards a wrestler's season record. Mountain Hawk wrestlers won eight of those matches, with Hines and Logan winning their second bouts of the evening. Hoffman, Burkhart and Davis also picked up victories after losing in the dual. Freshmen Manzona Bryant IV (149), Connor Herceg (174) and Caden Wright (184) notched Lehigh's other three victories. Bryant and freshman Steven Storm wrestled their first official bouts for the Brown and White. The Mountain Hawks will host Drexel on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The dual will be televised locally on Service Electric Network and streamed at Lehighsports.com/watch. Results: 125 - Jaret Lane (Lehigh) dec. Ohio also defeated VMI 21-18 to start the day. In the day's opening match, Campbell claimed eight bouts, including three forfeits to take the 34-6 win over Ohio, a late addition to Saturday's contests after second year SoCon program Presbyterian was forced to cancel. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In its first conference tri-meet since 1996, the 14th-ranked Gopher wrestling team (2-1) defeated Maryland (0-3) and host Michigan State (1-1) on Saturday afternoon. Minnesota routed the Terrapins with a 48-0 win and defeated the No. 17 Spartans, 28-6, in the finale. Eight of the 10 Gophers finished the day with two victories led by sophomore Patrick McKee. The 17th-ranked 125 pounder began the day with a major decision against Maryland's King Sandoval and then upset No. 2 Rayvon Foley of the Spartans with a 10-6 decision. Top-ranked heavyweight Gable Steveson improved to 32-0 in his career in dual meets with a pin and technical fall. Steveson earned a 13-second fall against Maryland's Connor Bowes to tie for the second-fastest pin in school history, matching Mitch McKee (2017) and Jim Martinez (1981). Another standout on the day was junior Jake Allar. Making just his second and third career starts, Allar began the day with a pin in 1:28 against the Terrapins' Dominic Solis at 174 pounds. He followed that with a 13-1 major decision against No. 15 Drew Hughes of the Spartans. PITTSBURGH --The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team earned another decisive home win and opened the 2021 ACC wrestling season with a 31-12 victory over Duke on Saturday at the Fitzgerald Filed House. The Panthers, ranked No. 12 by the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, beat No. 17 Lehigh 24-9 last Saturday at home and once again pulled away, this time beating Duke by a double-digit margin. Pitt (3-0, 1-0 ACC) has now won its first three dual matches for the second time in four seasons under head coach Keith Gavin, who improved to 4-0 against the Blue Devils (0-1, 0-1) in head-to-head action. "I thought we wrestled well today with a lineup that included some new guys," Gavin said. "We know everybody has to be ready to go, especially in a year like this. You have to be ready to wrestle. And I thought, for the most part, that our guys did a nice job today." For the third consecutive weekend, Pitt's upper weights went undefeated to help overturn a deficit. Trailing 12-9 at the intermission, the Panthers won the final five matches to pull away from Duke. Pitt now owns an 8-0 mark all-time against the Blue Devils with a 6-0 record at the Fitzgerald Field House. Unlike the Lehigh dual, when Pitt won eight matches by decision, the Panthers poured on bonus-point victories on Saturday in their ACC opener. Junior Micky Phillippi won by first-period pin, senior Jake Wentzel took a forfeit victory, senior Gregg Harvey and junior Nino Bonaccorsi earned major decisions and sophomore heavyweight Jake Slinger impressed again to wrap up the dual with a technical fall. "Continuing to score in matches has been a huge focus for us," Gavin added. "We've worked a lot on scoring on top, and I thought we did well in that position today. That's something that can set you apart, so we need to continue to focus on improving in that area." Also winning for Pitt, redshirt freshmen Colton Camacho and Jared McGill controlled their matches en route to comfortable individual victories. The Panthers face their biggest challenge yet next Friday when they travel to Raleigh to meet NC State, currently ranked No. 4 by the NWCA Coaches Poll, at 6 p.m. in a matchup televised on the ACC Network.
