Anyone know the record for true freshman? That record could be in serious doubt. I'd guess 2.

Off the top of my head 1947 had at least four in Lowell Lange, Bill Nelson,  Joe Scarpello, and Dick Hutton.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

The freshman in 1947 were probably just back from WWII and 27 years old.  Probably some really tough hombres.

When Audie Murphy was done fighting & had won every medal possible he was still too young to vote or buy a beer.

Lee Marvin was on three separate Island landings in the Pacific as a Marine Scout Sniper & was wounded - back/sciatic nerve & foot. All before he was 21. Spent 18 months in the hospital & many surgeries recovering.

They were not wrestlers but do represent the young men & women who served their nation and when the war was over they came home & moved on.

Some wrestled, some played ball (Yogi Berra, Ted Williams, etc) and all came home a lot older than the calendar years.

Now we have a few military veterans and more Mormon missionaries who come into college two or more years older than their standard classmates.

17 guys have won a title as a freshman the year after they graduated HS. This is what I consider True Freshmen.

In 1947, Nelson was a year removed from HS and Scarpello was 3 years. I'm not sure when Hutton graduated HS, but he was 23 at the time.

I think its only happened once with more than one true frosh champ. 2018 Yianni and Spencer Lee

Looks to be 4 from almost 80 years ago.

This year could have a few options at 133, Vega (very slim) P.J., and by a miracle Lockett although would be no surprise if he makes the finals.

They did not have any NCAA in 1943, 1944 and 1945 because of World war 11 They did make an exception in 1947 to allow freshmen to wrestle. But the freshmen were truly battle tested. I would think some much older normal then normal. Some were 24 years old. Plus the numbers were way down and that's why they allowed the older freshmen to wrestle. They also did the same thing in 1950 and 1951 During the Korean War. I don't think the number of freshmen in 1947 should be counted or compared to current records or freshmen.

I think it happens @ 133. Vega and Lockett I don't see happening.  PJ, curious how he handles Bigs.  He's looked sluggish at times and has had a long season

At least 12% of the field were true freshman, so there were quite a few that weren't older than normal as well.

So Nelson was the same age as Mark Hall? 😆
