Was reflecting on what OK State is trying to do.  Topple the empire of PSU.

Thought about the early PSU studs.  Those that started the empire and solidified it.  To me, these names seem hallowed.  Legend status.  More recent guys are awesome but not as much hallowed.  There is something to being a guy that created team dominance …. Gets more fan awe.  Taylor, Ruth, Retherford examples.  Bleeding into Nolf and Nickal.

These young guys are looking to do the same for OK State.  If they rise up, they will be on the shortlist of legends for OK State.  Would be more hallowed than if achieved same stats for PSU.

Fair?  Or just some bias I have and others don’t?

OSU has already won 34 titles, so these potential legends would be generation-specific to OSU.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

Fair point.  i think Ok State will catch Penn State (i.e. challenge for the team title as early as next year).  They are that good and guys like Jax are going to bring more studs to the program.

While true, if you look at the program in the last 50-years there have been 7 championships. This isn't to downplay the results from the 20's, 30's and 40's but sports have really changed.

The guys who pull them to a championship will be legends within the fan base. Yes, T. Boone Pickens was alive for all 34 of them but not many others.

Think about Jax Forest was born in the year of OSU's last championship.

Eh, valid point until you remember that legends myth bleeds into the runs of Aaron Brooks and C-Diddy, and they've only graduated within the last 2 years..

Being part of an incredible run is huge when it comes to being remembered and an all-timer.

In Seattle, we still talk about the guys on the '95 Mariners' run all of the time. Griffey, Buhner, Randy, Dan Wilson, Alex Cora, Edgar, etc. are all beloved by the fanbase and will never be forgotten because they were the first group that brought relevance to the Mariners.

Likewise, DT is the biggest name that has wrestled for Cael Sanderson despite *only* winning 2 titles when many others, including his classmate Ed Ruth have won 3 or more. And I understand that Taylor went on to winning worlds and an Olympic title, but he still gets talked about as one of the Mt. Rushmore wrestlers for his time in a PSU singlet in itself.

When you became a cog in a machine, you're name may not be forgotten, but it will never be revered like the guys who stick with the team that drafted them and ended a championship drought, or began a new dynasty. The guys winning championships on the Dodger's All-Star team will never be remembered for being the face of a franchise and becoming heroes for a city hoping for a title.

Guys like Megaludis, Nick Lee, Mark Hall, Cenzo Joseph, etc. are all guys that would have been leaders and heroes to other fanbases, but they're just names in a long list of guys who went to PSU and did their job in the line-up during their eligibility. Imagine if Mark Hall stayed home and was competing/winning national titles for Minnesota? He would be known as the hometown kid and the brightest star of that program in over a decade.

I'm not here to takeaway or criticize anyone for going to PSU where the track record speaks for itself. However, someone like Logan Stieber who stayed home and brought tOSU their first National title, or Spencer Lee who revitalized Iowa and brought them their first title in over a decade are much more memorable than the guys that join the machine that is PSU wrestling.

Did you forget about Tony Nelson?

Yes, I did.

But I'd argue when you're talking about moving the needle for a program, Mark Hall coming out of high school and Tony Nelson aren't exactly comparable.
