With National Duals done, why not throw out some early Pablo rankings.  Lots and lots of caveats with this

1) Remember that Pablo rankings are based on head-to-head outcomes of wrestlers.  Some might consider them "computer rankings" but that's not a fair description.  Sure, I use the computer to do the calculations, but that's just math.  I designed the algorithm, and the computer just does the math.  Nonetheless, it's based on what the wrestlers do on the mat and who they wrestle.

2) It's the beginning of the season, so matches are limited.  I've included everyone who has wrestled as I can, but restricted the ratings (who I included in the ratings) to at least 4 matches wrestled, but I have no confirmation that all the wrestlers are connected to the others.  Probably not.  But all matches have been included.

3) I've based these rankings solely on what wrestlers have done this year.  There are ways to include last year's results, but the size of the calculations gets to be outrageously large.  RIght now, I have about 4500 matches and 2500 wrestlers in the database.  There will be like 20K by the end of the year, so to include last year, it would be 25000 matches and probably 4000 wrestlers right now.  Ugh.  If I can figure out how to do it on the supercomputer, maybe....

4) Speaking of matches .... I have trying to pull matches off trac.  I think I'm doing a better job than I did last year, but I may have missed some.  Note that matches I use do not include a) byes, b) forfeits, c) medical forfeits, d) injury defaults, e) DQs or f) any other time they didn't actually complete wrestling, so they probably don't agree with their "official" records given by either the school or the NCAA.  I still wish there was a convenient database of matches.  Trac is doing ok, but I have to find the D1 matches from among all the other levels and that's why I can miss things.  I think almost all matches are there, though.

5) For non-D1 wrestlers - I include them in the database so long as they have at least one match against a D1 wrestler.  However, I only include their matches against D1, so if a D3 guy met up against a D1 guy at an open tournament, that match (and wrestler) will be included, but I won't keep the other matches of the D3 wrestler against non-D1 guys.  This applies to other levels, club or unattached guys (see 141!).

6) I'm still working on cleaning things up, so can't promise that all the team and wrestler names are right.  I've tried to fix all the D1 wrestlers with multiple names (the Nate vs Nathan, etc) but there could still be mistakes.

Give me a bit to figure out formatting, but I'll start posting.   For simplicity, it will only be the top 50.  All early season caveats apply, but this will give you an idea of who Pablo's got on the radar

Jayden James is not 4-0, although he is a high schooler as well.

You have high schoolers ranked.

Yes.

That's because they wrestled against D1 opponents, and have at least 4 matches.

Please read the first post about what is included.

I thought it is interesting that Bo Bassett went to #1 at 141 after his win at Clarion.  I don't think he's going to stay eligible as the season goes on because he won't get more than 4 D1 opponents.

But it's a good indication of his future.

That 4 match minimum might keep the psu guys out of rankings for awhile

meanwhile other top wrestlers have as many as 12 matches already

It's not even Thanksgiving.  Don't worry.  It won't mean much until January.

Even though they don't have enough matches to qualify to be ranked, it's no suprise to see Lilledahl, Mesenbrink, and the brothers at 197 and 285 rated very high based on their one match.

I just figured I have the data (as sloppy as it is, I may as well share.

Your algorithm makes such an early season ranking pretty useless.  It's not a reflection on your process, just that you are lacking data at this point.

It is what it is with the data available.  Sure, there's not much data so there aren't many concusions you can draw.

OTOH, it's interesting to see the things that have shown up.  You can see who has been winning (and who has been wrestling).

If I included last year's data in the mix, this would be extremely robust by this point.

Bassett wrestled 149lbs at Clarion.  Also, J James lost at Clarion in the first round.

Perentin is not a rostered D1 opponent (officially with Spartan Combat RTC), and so this match against James is not included in my database.  The only matches for James and Perentin in the database are those they have against D1 team opponents (and Perentin has a lot)

Matches for James include

Jayden James (Unrostered - KD Trained) over Sawyer Ayotte (Clarion) (Fall 1:15)

Jayden James (Unrostered - KD Trained) over Jaden Wehler (Clarion) (TF 22-4 2:13)

Jayden James (Unrostered - KD Trained) over Brock Woodcock (SIU Edwardsville) (MD 15-7)

Jayden James (Unrostered - KD Trained) over Gage Murphy (SIU Edwardsville) (TF 23-8 3:37)

His match against e'Than Birden from Ohio State does not have a score (or fall) in trac (it's listed as NC) so I can't use it

My criteria for including a match are set that I only include matches that include a D1 wrestler, and not matches between only someone club or other non-D1.

You should be including the Spartan Combat athletes.  They are doing the gap year that Cornell utilizes for 'redshirts' and they call it 'greyshirt'

They are for all intents and purposes a D1 athlete and should have Cornell next to their names. 9 of 10 of Cornell's current starters all had their first year at Spartan Combat before they were frosh at Cornell.  When Shapiro enters the mix again, it will be 8 of 10.

When they come wrestling for Cornell, I will count all their matches.

Being that they wrestle some 30+ matches every season against D1 competition, and often do very very well (see Joy, Jaxon last season for example), it will make your ratings highly skewed.

https://www.wrestlestat.com/wrestler/82488/joy-jaxon/profile

Your rankings have a person rated #1 in one weight class who lost to a guy who isn't rated, but you're not counting that match because the school he attends has to scam the system to make an attempt at being on a level playing field with the rest of the country.

But Perentin's match against Jayden James won't count, who is your #1 rated 165lber as of now with a 4W-0L record against D1 compeition.

You're also saying that Perentin, who is currently 5W-1L against D1 competition (and 1W-0L against your #1 rated 165lber) doesn't qualify for a ranking at 165lbs, despite several 2W-2L or 3W-2L competitors being ranked as high as as #21?

Does Navy scam the system with NAPS?  Does Army scam the system with USMAPS?  Does everyone at any Ivy school who takes a gap year scam the system?

Yes.  You can associate it negatively, they are gaming the system.  It is justifiable in my eyes and I see no fault in it.

Yes they are, though.

Just like Ferrari and Lockett stalled most of their respective matches in the Iowa-OSU duals.

Is a redshirt a scam?  Is it gaming the system?  Yes.  Yes it is.  I’m ok with calling these thing scams.  It is crap.  Go to college.  Compete.  Graduate.  Contribute to society.
