Kansas City’s government-backed grocery store failing customers, taxpayers; more critics than tomatoes

Kansas City’s failing government-funded grocery store has earned international infamy for its “empty shelves and rotten smells,” even as a leading New York mayoral candidate promises such operations there.

Despite millions of tax dollars thrown at the project since its 2018 opening in a city-owned strip mall at Linwood Boulevard and Prospect Avenue, news reports say the KC Sun Fresh grocery store “is on the verge of closure.”

Fox Business News and the Washington Post have sent reporters to see it for themselves, while London’s Daily Mail told readers, “Images at the Sun Fresh grocery store show mostly bare shelves and coolers as well as empty meat, produce and deli departments.”

“Kansas City poured millions into a grocery store. It still may close,” the Post headline reads.

KC Sun Fresh lost $885,000 last year and now has only about 4,000 shoppers a week,” the Post reports. “That’s down from 14,000 a few years ago, according to Emmet Pierson Jr., who leads Community Builders of Kansas City, the nonprofit that leases the site from the city. Despite a recent $750,000 cash infusion from the city, the shelves are almost bare.”

Bold and underlined are my additions.   KC sun Fresh sounds very nice, who wouldn't want to shop there?   It only lost $885k.   And throwing money at it doesn't seem to help.   What a real world example of socialism not working.   Of course Mamdami will do it right when he gets a chance.   The go to statement for all socialists/communists.   Sure it failed, but it wasn't implemented correctly.    Ha ha!

City-run grocery stores can't be expected to make money. It's more a matter of how much money they'll lose. If there is a profit to be made in a specific area, there's always a business owner waiting to pounce on the opportunity. These stores are created in areas that are not profitable and that's why they're food deserts to begin with.

Why should we the person be expected to lose money because certain people want to rob steal and murder?  Sounds like an opportunity to learn how to behave.

High poverty areas tend to have higher crime. That's the way it always has been and always will. Rich people have limited motive to steal anything.

The point of these stores is to improve the general conditions of the people that live in that area. It's never to make a profit and never will be.

Maybe if they chose to live  an honest life and a hard working living they wouldn’t be criminals, and they wouldn’t live in poverty.

The best thing we can do for them is teach consequences of choices and actions. My grocery bill is high enough I don't want to pay for someone else. I work hard not so other don't have to or so the government can take more from me.

The shelves are bare.   That's not helping anyone.   Similar to Eastern Europe during communism.  It simply doesn't work, good intentions or no.
