Sorry, don’t mean to distract from the women’s discussion and I am all for adding more women’s teams but how do 1/3 of the D1 women’s programs not have a men’s team?  That’s crazy.

I would hope Tarleton State is trying to push for both simultaneously.

KENT, Ohio — Kent State University announced today that women's wrestling will become the athletics department's 20th varsity sport, marking a historic addition to the Golden Flashes athletics lineup and a milestone for collegiate athletics in Ohio. Kent State becomes the first NCAA Division I institution in the state and fifth in the nation to sponsor women's wrestling.

The program will begin competition in fall 2027. Hiring for the program's first head coach is expected to take place by summer 2026, following ongoing planning and facility renovations that will include updated locker rooms and coaches' offices.

Men's team last year went 1-15, 0-15 against D1 teams. Then all the sudden they start this year 5-3 and add D1 women's wrestling with the promise of new upgraded facilities for both teams. Where is the money coming from? Especially since they are a non power 4 school? MAC school. Brown and Columbia yes but Kent State? How the change of fortune in 8 months?

Mercyhurst Adds Women's Wrestling to Division I

ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst University is excited to announce the addition of women's wrestling as a Lakers varsity sport, beginning in the 2026–27 academic year.

"Wrestling has deep roots and tremendous popularity in our region, and the growth of women's wrestling nationally has been incredible to watch," said Director of Athletics, Joe Spano. "With Mercyhurst's move to Division I and the NCAA elevating women's wrestling to full championship status, this is the right opportunity at the right time. Adding women's wrestling creates another meaningful pathway for young women to compete at the NCAA Division I level."

The Lakers will compete as a Division I program, making women's wrestling Mercyhurst's 31st varsity sport.

Mercyhurst becomes the eighth Division I institution to add women's wrestling, joining Iowa, Lehigh, Lindenwood, Presbyterian, Sacred Heart, Delaware State, and Kent State.

Mercyhurst will be just the second Division I women's wrestling program in Pennsylvania, joining Lehigh, which announced the addition of the sport in May 2025.

"This is an exciting and historic step for Mercyhurst University," said Laura Zirkle, Mercyhurst Vice President for Student Life. "Women's wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation and adding it as a Division I program aligns with our mission to expand opportunities for women while competing at the highest level. Mercyhurst has a long tradition of athletic excellence, and women's wrestling will be a powerful addition to that legacy."

The establishment of the women's wrestling program aligns with the sport's rising prominence nationally. In January 2025, the NCAA officially added women's wrestling as its 91st championship sport, elevating it from Emerging Sport status to full championship status and paving the way for its first national championship in 2026.

A national search for the program's inaugural head coach has begun. Interested applicants should visit https://www.mercyhurst.edu/human-resources/jobs to apply. Current men's wrestling head coach Jimmy Overhiser has been promoted to the Director of Wrestling and has begun recruiting prospective athletes. Interested athletes should visit hurstathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling to learn more and complete a recruit questionnaire here.

You can follow Mercyhurst women's wrestling on X (Twitter) and Instagram using @hurstwwrestling

Women's wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation, particularly in Pennsylvania, where there are more than 100 girls' high school wrestling programs.

The addition of a Division I women's wrestling program at Mercyhurst provides a critical collegiate pathway for talented student-athletes in Pennsylvania and the surrounding region to compete at the highest level.

doubtful it has anything to do with growing the sport, or what the NCAA thinks is best to do so. this is the same system as D2 and D3 men's

On March 6-7, the NCAA will crown its first-ever women’s wrestling national champions at the inaugural NCAA Women’s Wrestling National Championship in Coralville, Iowa, with live coverage on ESPN+ and the ESPN App. The historic event marks women’s wrestling as the NCAA’s 91st championship sport and features student-athletes from Divisions I, II and III competing for national titles. The championship will also air tape delayed on ESPNU at 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 8.

2026 NCAA Women’s Championships Schedule on ESPN:

Date Time (ET) Session Network
Fri, Mar 6 11 a.m. First Round ESPN+
5 p.m. Second Round ESPN+
Sat, Mar 7 3 p.m. Semifinals ESPN+
8 p.m. Championship ESPN+

I've seen the schedule posted in this thread a few places, but I think it's wrong for the semis. Tickets have that session starting at 10 am Central and the semis have to go before cons semis and place matches so I'd expect them to wrestle right away.

Can't wait!
