Mainly because Spencer Lee came into college ready to be a multiple time national champion. He could have gone to NDSU and won 2 nattys.

So, take out a generational talent that didn’t require much coaching and Iowa hasn’t had a national champion since 2017.

In that time span, off the top of my head, VA Tech, Northern Iowa, and Cornell have all had multiple people win a natty. For the premier program in college wrestling that seems like an underperforming program.

2 things can be true.   Iowa as a team can under perform and they can get credit for recruiting and developing a 3x NCAA champ and Oly Silver medalist.

I think he will. He should be 2nd in line behind Edmond. He earned a bid, 2nd highest ranked of pool, and beat Scott, who is in the pool. His only losses are to the field, except Porter. He has no wins against the field, which will hurt.

Although I don't know the criteria for selecting the at-large and there could be some insane rule to prevent it. I know there was something about being the first place outside of qualification having priority at one point. Even so, if Porter gets in, then Pucino has a win vs. the field and shifts his losses to all against the field.

The at-large criteria and the seeding criteria are identical:

  • 25% Head-to-head
  • 20% Quality Wins (wins over qualifiers and pre-allocated spot earners who did not qualify when considering at-large, wins over wrestlers in the field when considering seeds)
  • 15% Conference Tournament finish
  • 10% Coaches' Rank
  • 10% Common Opponents
  • 10% RPI
  • 10% Win %

Subjective Criteria:

  • Bad Losses (to sub-0.500 wrester)
  • Outside top 30 CR and/or RPI
  • Performance in last 5 matches
  • Number of INJ or MFF wins/losses
  • Best Quality Win
  • Availability (call it the Suriano Clause)

I saw that Starocci got a cease and desist letter from Anheuser-Busch. Pretty petty.
