This is the first match I've watched where the ref stopped the dominant wrestler (Mesenbrink) multiple times because his opponent (Mantanona) was audibly yelping in pain during the match.  And this was just from arm bars / hammerlocks.  Nothing really known for being pain inducing like a James Fleming side headlock.

What, you think THAT is a story about moaning on the mat? I'm going on a rant.

This was way back when I was 11. I was wrestling in the finals of an open tournament against one my teammates. My teammate had beaten me 4-2 in a ranking match a couple weeks before and I was now a scrub at 97 pounds. At the tournament I was seeded 4th and my teammate (Pat) was seeded 2nd,  and the #1 seed was a dude who was unbeaten and who pinned my teammate the week before.  I hammered my first couple opponents and was in the semifinals against the unbeaten kid. I pinned him in the 2nd period after getting a good lead, which shocked everybody. I was a pretty good wrestler but I had a few losses on my record. Anyway, I wrestled Pat in the finals. About halfway through the first period I got in deep on a double leg, picked him up completely and not so gently deposited him on the mat. Not a slam, but not a gentle deposit. I took him down straight to his back and flattened his shoulder blades to the mat. He started bawling, not just crying but loudly bawling, and the referee immediately stopped the match. Everybody and their mother came out onto the mat to make sure Pat was okay. They gently brushed the tears from his cheeks, and the referee restarted the match. I didn't get a takedown. I didn't even get a 3 point nearfall. I got screwed out of at least 5 points. After they'd refreshed Pat and let him get his composure the ref RESTARTED the match from that point in the first period 0-0 in the neutral position. It was as if the 10 seconds where I took Pat to his back no longer existed.  Pat "won" the rest of the match, 4-3.  I think that was the first time I got screwed by refs, but it certainly wasn't the last.

I think, at one point or another, some of us would "review" our past matches in our wrestling "careers."😉

I feel your pain... but that's all water under the bridge. You can file it under "whatcouldawouldashoulda"...

By the way, you were a 97lbs'er back-in-the-day... (and you chose that "NOT" a 97lbs'er avatar?!? 😏)

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

First time I read a Jim Post and shook my head with major agreement.

Had a few friends from college tell me stories about being rode by Fleming.

I'll move on at the 50 year anniversary of that screwjob, which will be next January.
