U23s is a lot better than it used to be. There are a lot of legitimate Olympic-level wrestlers now.

Bagaev (86kg) had a good match with Brooks last year. He was their 86 until they decided not to go.

I think it's a product of it being an olympic year as well as being one week prior to none olympic weight worlds. Other nations seem to have much better qualifying processes as well compared to us. I truly think our u20 team would have out performed this team at every weight aside from 74 and 92kg.

I've always thought MM would need to clean up his game as he got to the highest levels.  His high rate of attack and constant movement helps him get away with a lot of out of position wrestling.  As he enters the senior level his high stance and hand placement will be exploited unless he tightens up.

His pressure was reckless. From the first TD to the rest. Sometimes it's alright to go around the wall instead of through it.  Seemed stubborn...

He's got a tank...

Yep. He wrestles like a madman, nonstop the whole match, which overwhelms most opponents pretty quickly. But he is very sloppy, and that won't transition well at the senior level. I would expect him to improve on the in the next few years, though.

That's true. DT went through the same thing. The high paced attacks and chain wrestling that won him titles up through college didn't translate at the senior level in FS. Moving up to 86kg forced Taylor to change his style quite a lot ,but you could see him learning to be more selective with his motion and positions even as he was learning to be a world level freestyler at 74.

This year, Japan's five lightest weights were totally in beast mode:

  • 57- Higuchi (28) -- gold
  • 61- Ono (20) -- gold (10-2 over Uguev; 12-0 over Vito)
  • 65- Kiyooka (23) -- gold (10-3 over Amouzad)
  • 70- Aoyagi (22) -- silver
  • 74- Takatani (29) -- silver

What are they doing that makes them so good?

If this was their lineup for a complete, non-olympic year worlds, could these results win them the team race, even if none of 86 through Heavy didn’t place? It seems like it could
