Amir Yazdani beats Emami twice and wins the spot at 74kg

Azimi and Firouzpour go 1-1 and will wrestle a third match

Yazdani beats Azarpira twice and wins the spot at 97kg

Azarpira wasn't happy with how the decisive action was scored in the second period but he was very passive for both matches

And the lost challenge in the first period made yazdani recover for the second period.

Overall yazdani deserve the spot but I don't see him beating any of the top guys at 97  Sadulaev, Snyder, yoshida and tazhudinov .

Not a single takedown attempt from yazdani in 12 mins !!

I don't think that was a factor. Yazdani didn't look gassed at any point. Azarpira was very passive throughout both matches and has his own conditioning issues.

I agree that Yazdani will struggle against the top guys at 97kg. But beating Azarpira twice in a row is impressive, I didn't expect it. We will see some great match ups. Snyder dominated Ghasempour twice at 97kg. The monster match up is Sadulaev vs Yazdani. Sadulaev will defeat him easily but it will be a historic match in any case.

Interesting, but Azarpira has wins over Snyder and Tazhudinov, probably over Yoshida too. Transitive property?

Azarpira seems worse now somehow, he just lost to Yoshida 5-0 or something like that recently

a more dynamic and aggressive wrestler will cause Yazdani a lot of problems

Will always root for yazdani but his style won't work on these bigger guys.

Azarpira always had conditioning issues which played in yazdani favor .

Yoshida has the gas tank.

Snyder is tough and can't be bullied standing.

Sadulaev is dynamic, explosive and experienced.

All these are bad matchups for yazdani.

I think yaz need a strong first period (more than 5 points lead) to win against any of the top guys at 97

i still don't understand why he didn't take a year at 92kg to slowly build up to 97kg, he would easily win gold there

maybe he will surprise us, but 97kg is the strongest it has been in a long time

Snyder was pushed out a lot by Azarpira, so Yazdani could do it, but Snyder is very physical and will wear on Yazdani

Sadulaev's passivity might be good for Yazdani's style but he is on another level this year so forget about it

Yes , I was thinking the same about yazdani wrestling at 92 before his year .

The problem at 97 is that he will face 2 of the top guys on one day before reaching the final ! It's a very competitive weight and everyone knows how yaz strategy at this point. He will get one passivity point and probably a pushout in the first period . Second period his opponent only need 1 takedown to take the lead .

Perhaps if Azarpira had whined a little more throughout the matches he might have stolen at least one match...

Is it true that azarpira only needed to win one match yesterday to advance ??

Also azarpira wanted to challenge the last 2point claiming yazdani stepped out but he did use and lost his challenge in the first period.

yes, returning medalists only need to win 1 match while challengers have to win 2/2

Azarpira wasted his challenge in the first period, the scoring of that decisive moment for Yazdani was very debatable, but it's over now so instead he should learn to be less passive next year

Hearing the horns blow in this Belgium-Iran Football match is pretty cool.

Iran isn't really utilizing that red card as much as I hoped they would.

Drawing against Belgium is a great result for Iran, considering all the terrible obstacles Iran is facing. We still have a chance to progress to the next round if we beat Egypt.

It was crap, honestly.  That goal that was called back?  Okay.  Sure.

That play out the gate where the Belguim striker kneed your goalie in the face?  That should have been a red card.  Especially if the red card later was called a red card.

Edit: Crap because it seemed like the calls weren't consistent or fair.

He was talking about how Iran’s Federation petitioned FIFA to move their base camp outside of the US, since it would’ve been bad optics for Iran’s government to have their players seen being treated well by the evil Americans. Iran’s decision to move camp to Mexico made their players have to get multi-entry visas that limited how much time they could stay in the US before and after matches (known and agreed upon in advance as part of the petition process initiated by Iran to move base camp), and team personnel and delegates affiliated with the IRGC were denied visas.

I hate that they have politicized it.

I am happy they were allowed to play, though - as well as chose to play.
