I can only express my personal opinion.  I would love to see Masoumi take over the spot, but so far Zare has completely dominated him, and none of their matches have been close.  Masoumi is probably top 4 in the world, but there appears to be a big gap between him and Zare at the moment.

Masoumi is still very young and I am hoping that he will continue to improve.

Mirzazadeh is the best Greco 130 kg in the world. He turned Semenov and beat him. He now has wins over every other top ranked wreslter. Mirzazadeh is not at the level of a Lopez or Balboshin, he is more like this era's Baroev. Still he should win the next Olympic gold barring some Russian/Cuban prodigy emerging or an upset.

I think I remember him. He is the one who bear Kayaalp in his last tournament before the drug ban. Maybe he will beat Mirzazadeh . That's why I think Mirzazadeh is this era's Baroev.

I wonder what Riza's plan is. He has an enormous ego and I wouldn't put it past him to return just to get the European medal record. The continent is still pitiful at that weight (a lot of weights now) and he probably would be favorite. 

I don't think old man Kayaalp fancies his chances against Iran's heavyweights in 28, maybe for the better for Riza since  he'd put himself through the grind again. Riza's not a naturally big guy, holding all that weight can't be healthy for him.

Hello all, glad to see this thread again 

 

Senior nationals are going on right now for FS. Today was the 1st day. No real big news. Goleij beat Bazri in the semi at 97 and will almost certainly beat Babaloo in the final tomorrow. So he will likely be Azarpira's obstacle in making the 2025 world team. 

 

57 still very weak. Sarlak and Veisi lost to an unknown guy from Qom in the last seconds, lol. The final will be the Qom guy vs Valizadeh who went to junior worlds this year but had the results of DNP. He beat 17 year old Khateri 8 - 5 in the semi. I think none of these guys, including Sarlak who has to be around 25 or 26,  would medal at junior worlds let alone senior.

So far Iran's Greco national champions have been decided albeit world (senior, u23 and u20) and olympic medalists did not compete in this tournament as they had exemptions. 

55kg: Mehdi Ahadi Zanab (Gilan province), 60kg: Pouya Naserpour (Khuzestan province), 63kg:  Mohammadmehdi Keshtkar (Fars province), 67kg: Mohammadreza Gholami (Fars province), 72kg: Iman Mohammadi (Khuzestan province), 77kg: Amin Kaviyaninejad (Khuzestan province), 82kg: Gholamreza Farrokhi (Fars province), 87kg: Naser Alizadeh (Mazandaran province), 97kg: Hamidreza Badkan (Tehran province) and 130kg: Aliakbar Yousefi (Mazandaran province).

According to the Iran wrestling federation, the winners of the national tournament who are 23 years and younger will wrestle against the corresponding u23 world member at that weight class for the upcoming Asian championships, if no u23 national champion at that weight class, then the u23 world team member will compete. This applies to both freestyle and greco. 

For Zagreb open, the current provisional list for the greco team has been announced. 55kg: Armin Shamsipour and Mehdi Ahadi Zanab, 60kg: Pouya Naserpour, 63kg: Erfan Jarkani, Mohammadmehdi Keshtkar, 67kg: Ahmadreza Mohsennejad and Mohammadreza Gholami, 72kg: Mohammadreza Geraei, Danial Sohrabi and Iman Mohammadi, 77kg: Ali Oskou, Alireza Abdevali, Amin Kaviyaninejad and Amir Abdi, 82kg: Gholamreza Farrokhi, 87kg: Naser Alizadeh, 97kg: Shayan Habibzare and Hamidreza Badkan and 130kg: Aliakbar Yousefi.

Wrestlers in my opinion to keep an eye on incluude Armin Shamsipour, Ahmadreza Mohsennejad, Mohamdreza Gholami, Alireza Abdevali and Gholamreza Farrokhi. Most of these guys are age-level world champions and/or had a great performance at the Iran national championships.

At 57 and 61 any number of guys can make the team. They are all around the same ( not medal calibre) level. Rezaei at 65 teched everyone, we will see what he can do with Amouzad who for all the talk of him being too big seems to be staying at 65. Kiyooka really destroyed the best version of Amouzad ever in Paris. 70 guy is a cadet world champ from 2022 and beat Khalili in the junior trials last year before losing to Karampour in the final who got bronze at junior worlds. We will see if he can  derail Khalili's deserved hype  by beating him again. 74 winner beat Emami in a tournament last year as part of the olympic trials but then got destroyed by Nolf in the final and lost at Asian champs so they sent Emami anyway as he qualified the weight. The rest of them from 79 and up have a very small shot of making the team over the established guys I think.

Yes, but a relatively weak team

Amir Yazdani at 74. I think this is his new weight now. Hajilouian who recently won silver at u23 worlds is going at 97. Hashemi is the third best 125 in Iran and will be there. Some other non notable names who will lose in the early rounds. 

 

The better team is going to the Croatia ranking tournament

Staying completely politically neutral, there is a high likelihood that travel between Russia and USA re-opens after January 20, 2025. However, the logistics leading up to that date are likely to be too overwhelming (booking a plane ticket, booking a hotel, payment, etc) and therefore it would be very unlikely any US wrestlers compete at the 2025 Yarygin tournament.

Dabir says Yazdani now weighs 100kg and is unlikely to wrestle 86 again. He will return at 92 or 97. Ghasempour on the other hand is 89 kilos. 

 

We will see if he can make the team after all the injuries and getting older. If he does be could have senior medals from 70 - 97 kg which I am not sure has been done before. But getting past Azarpira will be hard.

I think a healthy Yazdani will defeat Azarpira.  Very few people have come back from one major should surgery, and he has had two.

I would imagine Yazdani going to 92kg for 2025/2026 and then move up to 97kg for 2027 and 2028. In saying that though I think Azarpira at 97kg and Firouzpour at 92kg could cause him some problems especially since both of those guys are in great form. Firouzpour beat Kurbanov (world silver) and pinned Naifonov (olympic bronze) in the last couple of months.

I think Mobin Azimi at 92 is also likely to be a threat domestically to both Yazdani and Firouzpour.. and for a change he is not from Mazandaran.

I really like Azimi but I don't think he is better than Firouzpour at the moment. Although he is only 21 and has had very solid results though. He is u20 WC beating Aitmukhan and getting silver at the Yarygin so he has a lot of potential. I'm interested to see what weight class he goes to because I can see him maybe dropping down to 86kg because of the competition in 92 and 97kg. Really exciting times for Iranian wrestling especially for the other provinces like Kurdistan who didn't historically have as good wrestlers coming through. We just now need Kermanshah and Lorestan to up their game.

He already went to 86 last year and lost to 700 year old ezzatollah akbari. Good luck to Azimi but unless a few guys around his age get injured I don't see him making a world team. The real talented wrestler from that part of Iran was 2018 cadet world champ ghiasi who unfortunately stopped wrestling
