Online Security & Hacking

LastPass users will want to read this security incident.  An attacker was able to collect information about LP users but is unable to do much with it unless they crack your master password.  If you are following best practices, your account should be safe.

Given how terrible most people's online security protocols and password choices are, I suspect this will be sufficient to allow dictionary attacks (against someone's master password) to become extremely relevant again.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have 2 email accounts, Google / Gmail and Microsoft / Outlook.  One I use for trivial communications, the other is for personal business, online shopping, bill payment, etc.  Both receive virtually the same amount of spam, though Outlook spiked tremendously in early December and had persisted into January.  (Coincidently, it occurred soon after enrolling in the Intermat forum and using the Outlook address). There is a distinct difference in the 2 when it comes to spam identification and sorting.  Microsoft/Outlook is horrible.  It sends marks and sends valid notes to junk mail even though it has ignored previous valid notes.  On the other hand, it totally ignores readily identifiable spam, ex. grqtcvmske@xxxx.com.  Gmail on the other hand sends all of that spam to the spam folder and I've never had a valid note sent to the GMail spam folder and it rarely misses a spam note.

I've been contemplating terminating the Outlook account in favor a new #2 email account.  Which free email / webmail providers do you think do a better job of identifying and sorting spam and phishing?

One other question, why am I constantly seeing women's underwear ads in the pop ups on this site?  My wife freaked out when she peeked over my shoulder one day.  She accused me of being an internet cheater on porn sites.

Nothing on here is being released to others and is all encrypted. I would suggest when using gmail you can and a "+" and something after it and it will go to your account, but you'll be able to sort emails and see where they are coming from. So you would update your email to username+intermat@gmail.com and you can then setup filters for that email address.

The ads are still being tweaked as far as what is shown and not allowed.

Of course I see this ad on this topic

I don't mind the pop ups, I know Intermet enjoys the revenue.  It was interesting to observe the female body on every page. 🙂 without having a topic titled Ladies of the Internet.

Most sensitive categories are blocked on the site, the ones allowed are nothing sexual or of that nature.

Never give Twitter or any social media your real information.

Use a burner email, google voice number, put in false information wherever you can and no information wherever you can.
