Weird… haven’t multiple threads devolved into arguments about how only mediocre wrestlers in the US go the Greco route because they can’t beat the better wrestlers who go the freestyle route? Now a mediocre Greco wrestler took the greatest freestyle wrestler of all time to the brink… Confused Thinking GIF

Yes, I confess my knowledge of mediocre American 87kg greco roman wrestlers who rarely compete internationally is limited

So you don't know anything about college wrestling either?

your mind is going to be blown when you realise that non-Americans exist and care about American college wrestling about as much as you care about the Iranian wrestling league or Takhti Cup.

5X qualifier is not a bum...

i sometimes have these discussions about what is harder, winning a D1 National Title or winning and International world gold...

i will always have a hard time relenting that any "national" title is "harder" than a "world" title...

but...

what i will readily admit is that there are several "styles" of wrestling that can win a D1 title because the rule set is designed that way...

not so much internationally...

greco is not even a discussion for many of the same reasons...

I'm tuned in brother. I love wrestling.  All of it. Iranian wrestling is right up there with American wrestling in my experience (all styles). You believe only Iranians watch your wrestlers and read and comment in the Iranian forums that go back years and years. Short sighted indeed.

You somehow think because I'm American I have tunnel vision for American wrestlers only.  I'm a fan of wrestling, not nationalities. You comprehend this or you don't. I'm not interested in convincing you and I've explained more than I should have. Carry on. ✌️

Except, Braunagel is a “mediocre (relatively speaking) wrestler in the US that went the Greco route because they can’t beat the better wrestlers who go the freestyle route.”

I was always taught you can’t make much of close losses…

Late to the thread.  Can someone save me some time and tell me how many pages I have to go back to find some discussion of today’s wrestling?

Other thread and double the pages.

I am sure you appreciate Iranian wrestling but the point remains non-Americans will not be aware of the American college wrestling system. Frankly, non-American wrestling fans do not care or know much about NCAA titles and the like. Just like non-Iranian fans probably don't know much about the Takhti Cup etc.

American wrestling fans typically think ncaa's are the pinnacle of the sport.

And then when the same NCAA champions make Worlds that same year and fail to place, there's crickets from the peanut gallery

I wonder who sold Ono on the idea that wasting 2 years of his career training folkstyle was a good idea

Do you mean learning how to pretend to wrestle on the mat while coaches from both sides yell the other guy is stalling won’t help his freestyle career?

It’s the pinnacle of youth wrestling… it’s sort of like celebrating a kid “graduating” from eighth grade.

All I can think of is maybe Ono thought enrolling at Penn State and doing RAF on the side was a way to secure his visa for the 2028 Olympics

I look at what Burroughs is doing at his academy and kind of shake my head - Ono would be so much better off just leaving Penn State and training with Burroughs/Carr

Yep. To non-US fans the idea that a NCAA title (whatever that is) could be as valuable as a worlds title is insane. We just don't know much about the NCAA system or what it is and our focus is usually on international wrestling.
