  1. The reason he might consider greyshirting is schoolwork. Getting into peak condition for mid to late September. Traveling to Europe. I assume a camp in Europe to acclimate himself. Competing. Coming back. How much would he really be able to study? If he’s on the world team now, he may decide to treat it as his full time job now.
  2. Worlds are in mid to late September. That has to make starting college tough. Maybe he’ll consider a greyshirt. Seems like he’ll be pursuing freestyle anyway.
  3. I thought it was all just the Senior National Team, whether they competed at worlds or not. Now I see that there is a different name for the group that competes.
  4. The top three at each weight are part of the Senior National Team and receive money to train for worlds. That’s why there were true third place matches. The more you know
  5. If we’re talking the word team as in top three placers, PSU has reps at 57, 65, 70, 74, 79, 86, and 92. And that’s not counting Dake and Snyder. Seems good to me.
  6. High schooler PJ Duke winning Final X is impressive. Wow.
  7. As I understand Jesus’s message, making a spectacle of your beliefs can be consistent with spiritual poverty. Some of those with the deepest faiths may not say much about their faith at all. As Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew: “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
  8. Incorrect. Blaze made Final X last year.
  9. Everyone develops only their own tracks. DT and Dake made their first world teams at 27, and still managed to pull down some impressive hardware. It remains to be seen whether CStar sticks with freestyle, and if so how good he gets.
  10. Dake is 34 and potentially a bit undersized. He's a legend, but gotta go with CStar here.
  11. What are the challenge tournament finals matches so far?
  12. The Dynasies: 1928 to 1971- Oklahoma State 1975 to 2000- Iowa 2011 to Present- Penn State In the ten championships from 2001 to 2010, there was no clear top dog: Oklahoma State won four times Iowa won three times Minnesota won three times Iowa State and Oklahoma broke through a number of times (eight for Iowa State and seven for Oklahoma), but when they did so it was always during another team's era.
  13. “Scouring the land looking for anyone to beat” Gable makes no sense. It’s like saying the USA scoured the land (in barns? under bridges?) looking for anyone to beat Yarygin, who pinned his way through the ‘72 Olympics.
  14. I have no inside info about anything. But… In terms of technical skill, I was impressed by a number of athletes, including CStar, Hamiti, and KOT. Whether any of them want to coach, no clue.
  15. If a coach is going to run an elite program in the current environment, he is going to welcome anyone who can challenge for the starting job. On the other side of the coin, athletes are free to transfer to another team if the elite program no longer suits them. It’s not how a lot of people are comfortable operating, but it’s how an elite program must operate if it is going to be elite.
  16. It’s all about vibes, as I’ve been saying. But I’d note that if the Hodge simply became the most falls in a season award, that would at least provide some superficial objectivity (not accounting for number of matches, strength of schedule, strength of weight class, etc). Anyway, congrats to Hendrickson.
  17. In reality Hodge voting is subjective. If it were truly about dominance, as evidenced by bonus percentage, MM would have won.
  18. Voting for Carter is reasonable. He had a better bonus percentage than Hendrickson (and, of course, won an unprecedented fifth title).
  19. I congratulate Hendrickson, but I’d also point out that Carter had a higher bonus percentage than Hendrickson—which, of course, suggests that he was more dominant than Hendrickson. Hodge voting is inherently subjective though and many years, like this year, multiple people have a strong case.
  20. Right. But if an athlete wins a world/Olympic medal within months of an NCAA season, I think that’s relevant. Brooks won an Olympic bronze immediately after his final NCAA season. I don’t think any of the others did that (if my memory is right) — of course Starocci and MM may pursue a world team this year.
  21. Zain having zero votes as of now is surprising. 3x champ, 2x Hodge winner (and eventual world champ)
  22. Who is it? Polls here only allow 20 options so I did not extend the poll to ISU wrestlers (like Paulson and Varner).
