World OG qualifier brackets are out...

Coleman also officially eliminated. He finishes 1-1. Bey's Russian opponent ran through Belarus in the R16 and is about to wrestle his QF against a Swede who's been through 2 wars and doesn't seem super impressive. A win would leave only a semi-final OG Qualifier match later on to bring Bey back in to tomorrow. -
Yeah, Greco is going way over today. It doesn't matter much because they can head straight into the semi-finals at 11am ET since there's no program this afternoon. The women's event tomorrow also won't matter because there are many less entrants But I wonder if they'll make time adjustments for the freestyle day (maybe start weigh-ins earlier or push the evening program back). The freestyle quarterfinals won't be done until way past the scheduled women's bronze matches if they don't change something.

Yeah, the fact that the winner of Ochir/Zain will have only a little over an hour of rest and will have wrestled one other solid opponent prior to their matchup--while Kudiev wrestles opponents he can finish quickly--is worrisome. I posted estimated start times on another thread, and I will say that the amount of wait between the R32 and the Ochir match gives me some hope for a good, weight-recovered Zain performance in that match. He won't face Ochir until probably close to 8 hours after weigh in, 3 hours after his R32, and maybe 4.5 hours after the Coman R64 match. -
Saturday is going to involve a LOT of sitting around in the first couple of rounds for Lee and Zain. As we speak, almost 6 hours into the event, they are just now wrestling the Round of 16 matches for some of the weights of Greco. And freestyle matches take longer than Greco. Historically, freestyle matches take about 9 minutes per match over a day for these events. Using that as our marker, estimated local and US ET for their matches on Saturday are below. These are ESTIMATES. Obviously some mats go faster or slower than planned. And these projected times will eat into the scheduled women's 3rd place matches at 4:45pm, so they may have to make time adjustments based on how long things are going today with Greco. Spencer Lee: Weigh-in: 7:45 to 8:15am (12:45 to 1:15am ET) R32: 10am (3am) R16: 2pm (7am) QF: 4:30pm (9:30am) Semi-finals session starts at 6pm (11am) Zain Retherford: Weigh-in: 7:45 to 8:15am (12:45 to 1:15am ET) R64: 11:20am (4:20am) R32: 12:50pm (5:50am) R16: 3:50pm (8:50am) QF: 5:20pm (10:20pm) Semi-finals session starts at 6pm (11am)

Coleman went 1-1 and needs to depend on a repechage shot too. The Russian can definitely get through and bring Bey back in. The Ukrainian and Swiss that beat our other two don't seem likely, though. -
Nope. That opinion was clearly your point from the beginning. It's way over diagnosed. That part is true. My sister and some others I know have been diagnosed and they don't take or need meds and I don't get the diagnosis at all. But with a stimulant, my father and my daughter, on the other hand, go from level 2 life functionality with hyperactivity and agitation through the roof to calm, relaxed, level 8 functioning human beings with virtually zero hyperactivity or anxiety. You know there are hundreds of studies of brain chemistry and brain function on the ADHD mind, right? With physical results, not theoretical psych mumbo jumbo. You know this, right? Anyway, your second point about ease of getting a diagnosis and accessing Adderal is 100% correct too. Brooks not having a TUE is irresponsible at best and probably points to cheating, sadly. You're not wrong.

Great points, as always. Really annoyed about the R64 nuisance vs Coman. Zain will beat him, but a tech is unlikely and he'll go into Ochir having invested himself already. Silver lining if he loses to Ochir is obviously that Ochir would then be favored to the final and bring Zain into day 2. But with Kudiev's first 2 being easy, that QF becomes much tougher for a spent Zain/Ochir winner too. Really, really tricky day for Zain. -

I like Lee's chances. Zou here feels like the scary landmine. He's very athletic and gives everyone problems. He doesn't get blown out. Egorov hasn't had amazing results the past couple seasons, although he's a real opponent, certainly. Sarlak has been MIA the last 2 seasons and wrestling behind Iran's weakest starter, so not sure the story there. Dingashvili is solid, but I'd definitely favor Spencer if that was the semi's match and everything was on the line. All in all, if he wrestles anything like trials, I think he controls his own destiny. -

Coleman may have the most workable bracket of the Greco guys: Belarus, then a non-Greco nation, then probably Bulgaria, then probably Hungary in the semi's. His quarter seems much more doable. If he can get to the semi's, he obviously gets 2 shots to qualify -

Dalton Roberts: Ukraine, Sweden, Armenia/South Korea, Russia the four he needs to get the final...again, brutal. -

Brutal draw for Kamal Bey, also. Russia, Belarus, Sweden...then probably the Georgian or Nemes the Serbian. All coin flip type of matches. -
Just saw brackets are out. Go to arena.uww.org. At first glance, it looks like Spencer gets: R32 a Moroccan (heavy favorite) R16 #1 seed Zou of China (slight favorite; Zou is feisty) Quarters: probably Egorov of Macedonia via Russia (favorite) Semi's: Sarlak of Iran (arguably slight favorite, but Sarlak is seasoned at events like this and Spencer is not) Zain's draw isn't great. It's exactly what we feared at this weight. He has to hold his nerve for 4 tough wins to get to the final: R64 Coman of Romania (unlucky to have a R64 match..only a few do..Coman will put up some resistance, but Zain should win) R32 A Yemenese (should be easy) R16 Tumur Ochir of Mongolia (super scary...very solid, athletic guy) Quarters: Probably the Russian/Tajik Kudiev (not as good as Tumur Ochir, but he'll be well rested after 2 easy matches compared to 3 matches, with 2 tough ones for Zain) Semi's: Sujeet of India or Jalolov of Uzbekistan likely here (both very tough)

Um...is Trent Hidlay possibly our rep at 86kg?

Without a TUE -
It's one thing to see something as true--and another thing entirely to have the confidence and emotional intelligence to act on it and follow through on putting all of the pieces in place to take advantage of it. He saw the facts AND the path to using the facts AND he executed it. That's the genius we're lauding. I love to hate PSU as much as the next guy--but Cael is an all-time genius on many levels.

John Smith's olympic run and Cael's comeback were pre-transfer portal, pre-NIL. Are we sure a freshly signed DT really forfeits any of the massive OSU attention demand to his personal endeavors? I'm not sure about that. Very, very interesting scenario, though. -
I guess at this point in his maturity trajectory, I wouldn't have associated "Gable Steveson" with "shaping young lives." But who knows?

Gotcha...sorry I mis-read that. -
Others have mentioned the potential enhancements that are true for a non-ADHD brain. Adderall and other related stimulants have been shown to help with short-term weight loss, focus, and intensity of performance for a non-ADHD mind. For the chemistry of an ADHD brain, adderall and other stimulants actually calm the mind and help regulate executive function for normal life--rather than heighten the brain's activity. They also don't suppress his appetite other than in the first days of taking it. If he genuinely has an ADHD diagnosis and he's been on adderall for an extended period, it's having zero impact on his wrestling ability.

Yeah, 86kg internationally is very deep with "good"--without much "great" other than the top 2 (DT and Yazdani). I'd pick Naifanov and the Russian representing Greece, Kurugliev, over Hidlay, with another 2 or 3 maybe coin flips. Overall, I think he'd be less than 50% to medal because of various landmines, but he'd be capable of beating anyone except probably Yazdani. I guess my real question is: Knowing Valencia probably gives us a better chance to medal, would USAW consider a wrestle-off between Hidlay and Valencia for the spot if it came to it, or is Valencia out of luck because of defaulting? -
On the 5% chance that the sketchy reporting of Brooks' adderall situation is reliable AND the situation can't get resolved--is Trent Hidlay our guy at the Olympics at 86kg?!? DT just took one of the biggest D1 jobs in the middle of transfer season. There's no way he's coming back to compete. Valencia injury defaulted the Challenge tourney True 2nd match with Hidlay, and so Hidlay took the 3rd spot in the US National Team pecking order. Are we locked into Hidlay as next-in-line if Brooks' situation results in a suspension??

Finesilver unable to compete in Olympic qualifier
maligned replied to Eagle26's topic in International Wrestling
Avoiding all political tension spots is way easier said than done. If you just say certain nations will be excluded from hosting, you're making yourself into a political watchdog instead of a sports commission. Armenia and Azerbaijan are great wrestling nations that are, by and large, peaceful with the rest of the world--but that have had political tensions between themselves for decades. Do you exclude them from hosting, knowing that each country's wrestling body won't let their wrestlers attend an event in the opposite nation "for safety concerns"? I'm not sure it's UWW's job to police that when the nation is a proven "peaceful" nation historically and is a war-free spot at the moment. (And when perceived risks are often happening in real-time--long after the host site was already determined.) Sadly, many legitimate contenders for Olympic spots from Armenia missed out on the Euro qualifier in Azerbaijan and have to try to qualify only in the World Qualifier (for the same reasons that Finesilver won't go to Turkey, in terms of his oversight deciding for him that it's not safe).
