National team member Amy Fearnside (Mensah-Stock) opened the championship dual meet with a 14-11 victory over two-time world bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Winchester) at 50 kilograms. Lampe looked strong early, racing out to a 9-0 lead before Fearnside battled back, scoring a takedown and three gut wrenches to cut the deficit to 9-8. She eventually took the lead and held on to win by three. Team Winchester then went on a run, claiming wins in the next three matches. Jacarra Winchester (Winchester) won by 10-0 technical superiority over Alisha Howk (Mensah-Stock) at 53 kilograms. Gracie Figueroa (Winchester) edged Abby Nette (Mensah-Stock) 4-3 at 57 kilograms. At 62 kilograms, Macey Kilty (Winchester) capped off a dominant performance at the Captains' Cup with a 10-0 technical superiority over Xochitl Mota-Pettis (Mensah-Stock). World champion and team captain Tamyra Mensah-Stock (Mensah-Stock) came through, earning a fall over Alex Glaude. Team Winchester held a 3-2 lead going into the final match of the dual meet at 76 kilograms. Team Mensah-Stock needed at least a decision victory by shutout to win the dual meet. Dymond Guilford (Mensah-Stock) accomplished that and more. She cruised to a 10-0 technical superiority over Geneva Gray (Winchester). The victory gave Team Mensah-Stock one more classification point than Team Winchester, which broke the tie. AMES, Iowa -- No. 8 Sun Devil Wrestling (6-0, 2-0 Pac-12) walks away with two victories to finish the 2020 regular season undefeated Sunday afternoon. ASU slammed in six individual wins and three bonus points in their 20-15 win over No. 13 Iowa State before dominating Northern Iowa 24-10. "It makes it a good day when we put two wins on the board. Iowa State and Northern Iowa both came to fight which was good because we needed an old fashion battle," head coach Zeke Jones said. "We had huge wins by Cohlton Schultz, Brandon Courtney and Trey Munoz. We're excited to head back home and get to work for the Pac-12 Championships and the NCAA Tournament." No. 3 Brandon Courtney, No. 6 Michael McGee, No. 4 Anthony Valencia, No. 3 Kordell Norfleet and No. 7 Cohlton Schultz all remain unbeaten headed into the Pac-12 Championships. The day began at 10 a.m. with Arizona native Courtney stepping onto the mat against Aden Reeves of Iowa State at the 125 weight class and earning the first points with a quick takedown. Courtney and Reeves battled all match, but ultimately the redshirt junior would run the match with five takedowns and a bonus point for riding time in the 12-4 major decision victory. Redshirt junior Michael McGee followed Courtney's momentum with a takedown and four-point near fall out of the gate for a 6-1 lead over No. 25 Zach Redding. The two would go scoreless in the second with McGee claiming his final points of the match in the third with a reversal. In his 9-4 decision victory over Redding, McGee claimed the riding time bonus point with over four minutes on Redding to put the Sun Devils up in the team score 7-0. Iowa State answered back with three consecutive victories at 141, 149 and 157. Coming out of the break, the Cyclones put points on the board with Isaac Judge earning a quick takedown over No. 4 Anthony Valencia. Selecting bottom to begin the third, Valencia's agile escape cut Judge's lead down to 3-2. Valencia's escape was followed by a takedown and four-point near fall to push him ahead of his opponent for a 8-4 decision victory to cut the Cyclone team lead to 12-10. After being held scoreless in the first period, redshirt freshman No. 15 Trey Munoz would earn an escape, takedown and four-point near fall in his 7-1 decision victory over No. 25 Julien Broderson. The Cyclones would regain the team lead after Cade Belshay was defeated in a 6-5 decision against No. 24 Samuel Colbray, forcing the final two weights to be the dual's deciding factor. No. 3 Kordell Norfleet faced Yonger Bastida, earning the match's opening points with a takedown over the Cuban. Batisda escaped Norfleet's grip, but not long enough as the redshirt senior claimed a second takedown, a two-point and four-point near fall to conclude the first period to lead 10-1. The two went back-and-forth on the mat, but with four escapes, a third takedown and the riding time bonus point, Norfleet would be victorious by a 17-7 major decision. With a 17-15 team lead over ISU, the heavyweight top-10 match would be the dual's deciding factor. No. 6 Gannon Gremmel gave No. 7 Cohlton Schultz the first point of the match as he was knocked for locked hands. Schultz decided to start the second on bottom and earned the escape point midway through to lead 2-0. Gremmel did the same to start the third which forced the 2-1 match into overtime after the riding time point was given. The lone overtime point was awarded to the redshirt freshman when he escaped from Gremmel to lead ASU to a 20-15 team win over Iowa State. The Sun Devils had a short break before returning to the mat against Northern Iowa beginning with a top-ten showdown between Courtney and No. 6 Brody Teske. In the first period, the two exchanged takedowns and escape points for a tied match. Courtney handed Teske his first loss of the season in his 5-3 decision victory. Northern Iowa bounced back, with Nicholas Raimo and Peter Lipari falling short to their opponents. Lipari's match with Ethan Basile went into overtime after UNI won a challenge that reversed takedown points given to Lipari. Down 6 to 3 in the team score, senior Cory Crooks and Tristan Lara went scoreless until Lara earned the first point in an escape to start the second period. Crooks began the third on the bottom to earn an escape point and he followed with a sneaky takedown over Lara in his 3-2 decision victory. Teemer did not wrestle against ISU, but returned to the mat against UNI for a dominating 11-8 decision win over Derek Holschlag at 157. Teemer collected a takedown, two reversals, an escape and four-point nearfall. Continuing the success on the mat for the Sun Devils, Valencia earned two takedowns before pinning Pat Schoenfelder in 4:27 extending the team lead for ASU to 15-6. For the fourth consecutive win by ASU, Trey Munoz won by a 3-2 decision. Munoz started the match with a speedy takedown followed by Lance Runyon's escape. The redshirt freshman began the second on bottom, earning an escape point to regain the 3-1 lead. At 174, No. 6 Parker Keckeisen gave the Sun Devils their second loss of the dual against Cade Belshay. ASU wrestled right back into the win column with No. 3 Kordell Norfleet's defeat of No. 30 Keegan Moore at 197. Thirty seconds in Norfleet completed a takedown to lead 2-0 against the Panthers. Norfleet selected to start on the bottom for the second period and quickly escaped to extend his lead to 3-1. The senior made quick work to secure the 5-3 win. No. 7 Schultz closed out the showcase, facing No. 6 Carter Isley at heavyweight. Schultz earned a takedown to lead 2-0 over Isley heading into the second period. The redshirt freshman made the top-10 bout look easy, defeating Isley with a 4-0 decision. STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Cowboys crowned four champions, the most of any competing team, Sunday afternoon in Stillwater with all four winning wrestlers upsetting top ten opponents in the finals. Jacob Wright (157), Hayden Hastings (174), Tate Samuelson (184) and Stephen Buchanan (197) were all champions for the Cowboys. Wyoming crowned four champions"I'm really proud of our entire team and the way we wrestled today. We had some gutsy performances at 141 and 149 and some comeback performances in the finals." Head Coach Mark Branch "I think today Really helped set the tone for the rest of the season. That's something we haven't really done in Gallagher-Iba before. To wrestle like that and those matches was great. I was really proud of our guys wrestled and we really took a big jump. I'm excited to see that they are starting believe themselves and it showed today." Wright would get his day started in dominant fashion outscoring his first two opponents 22-6 including a 14-4 victory over Chance McLane (OSU) in the quarterfinals. In the finals Wright would come up against No. 10 Wyatt Sheets (OSU). It would be a tight match, but after taking a 3-2 lead Wright shut down the offense of Sheets and came out with the win. It was his first top 10 win of the season. At 174 Hastings had a solid day displaying stingy defense on his way to the finals. In his first two matches Hastings only allowed 5 points, defeating Sean Harman (MIZZ) in the semifinals, 6-3. Hastings squared off against No. 7 Dustin Plott (OSU) in the finals in what would be a close match. Hastings got to his offense early scoring some big takedowns and racking up the riding time. After a comeback from Plott, the riding time would prove to be the deciding factor in the match as Hastings won 8-7 thanks to the riding time point. Samuelson had a strong day on his way to a title displaying the heart and effort of a champion. In the quarterfinals and semifinals he outworked his opponents doubling both of them up on the scoreboard. In the finals, Samuelson faced No. 7 Dakota Greer and defense was key in Samuelson's victory. He scored two takedowns off of counter attacks, including the match winning takedown to seal the victory 10-6. For Buchanan, it was another bid day highlighted by a upset of a top five opponent. Buchanan faced No. 2 Noah Adams (WVU) who he beat a weekend ago when Adams was ranked No. 1. Buchanan proved it was no fluke winning another nail biting match. After trailing 4-2 with less than minute left, Buchanan escaped and went straight to attacking scoring a takedown with 12 seconds left, after adding on the riding time point he won 6-4. The Cowboys also had four third place finishers on the day, including Chase Zollmann (141) and Jaron Jensen (149). Both Zollmann and Jensen won their third place matches by fall with Jensen recording a pin inside the first period. Up next a select group of Cowboys will travel to Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 20 for a round-robin style event with Air Force, Northern Colorado and Utah Valley.

EVANSTON, IL -- Northwestern wrestling closed out its home schedule in style, with five Wildcats earning victories on Senior Day in a Top-20 takedown over No. 19 Wisconsin. No. 1 ranked Ryan Deakin made his highly anticipated 2021 season debut and did not disappoint, earning a 21-4 tech fall in the third period over Gavin Model. Deakin also picked up an additional win in the extra matches over Wisconsin's Devin Bahr. Also picking up wins for Northwestern was Colin Valdiviez, Yahya Thomas, David Ferrante and Jon Halvorsen as the Wildcats upended the Badgers, 18-17. After falling behind early, the 'Cats rattled off four-consecutive wins at 141, 149, 157 and 165 lbs. Valdiviez started off the streak with a decisive 14-9 win over Wisconsin's Dominic Dentino. Thomas kept the momentum rolling with his second major victory of the season in convincing fashion, defeating #29 Drew Scharenbrock, 13-4. Following Deakin's tech fall, true first-year David Ferrante earned his first-ever collegiate win for Northwestern, taking down Josh Otto 6-0. Jon Halvorsen added the finishing touches for NU at 197 lbs, winning his first match of the season in a 7-5 decision over Andrew Salemme. Northwestern is back on the mat next weekend as the Wildcats travel to Iowa City on February 19, followed by a trip to Minnesota on February 21 to close out the 2021 regular season. AMES, Iowa -- No. 13 Iowa State (9-3, 4-1 Big 12) split a pair of duals on Sunday, falling to No. 11 Arizona State (5-0), 20-15, and defeating No. 15 UNI (4-4, 3-2 Big 12), 23-17. Both duals went down to the final match. Iowa State-Arizona State Match Highlights Ian Parker won ISU's first match at 141 pounds with an 8-3 decision over Peter Lipari. Parker had a takedown in each period and gained a point for riding time by staying on top of Lipari throughout the majority of the third period. Jarrett Degen blanked Cory Crooks, 5-0, at 149 pounds. Degen got a takedown on the edge in the closing seconds of the second period and tacked on another in the third in his first match in Hilton Coliseum this season. David Carr wasted little time in his match at 157 pounds against Hunter Balk. Carr got two quick takedowns and eight nearfall points before securing the pin at the 1:47 mark. Sam Colbray came up big at 184 pounds with a 6-5 decision over Cade Belshay. Colbray fought back after giving up a first-period takedown. Down 4-3 entering the third period, Colbray picked up an escape and took down Belshay with :22 seconds left in the match to secure the win. The dual went down to heavyweight, as the Sun Devils held a 17-15 lead with one bout left between No. 5 Gannon Gremmel vs. No. 7 Cohlton Schultz. The match was tied at 2-2 after seven minutes. Gremmel gave up a point with a hands to the face violation, but made up for the call by riding out Schultz for most of the second period. Schultz was able to lock up the victory, 3-2, in TB1 by riding out Gremmel for :30 seconds. ISU held the edge in takedowns, 14-11. Iowa State-UNI Match Highlights Zach Redding mounted a come-from-behind 6-5 TB1 victory over Kyle Biscoglia at 133 pounds. Down 5-3 late in the third period, Redding got a takedown with :10 second left to stay alive. Biscoglia's stalling point in TB1 was the deciding factor in the match. Ian Parker moved ISU ahead in the match (9-5) by collecting the fall at the 4:29 mark over Ethan Basile at 141 pounds. David Carr had four takedowns and 10 nearfall points in a dominating 19-2 technical fall over Derek Holschlag at 157 pounds. Isaac Judge scored an important victory at 165 pounds, defeating Pat Schoenfelder, 10-7. Judge gave up a takedown early, but a reversal and two takedowns gave him a comfortable lead. Schoenfelder closed the gap with a pair of takedowns in the third period, but a key reversal helped seal the win. Marcus Coleman won a huge match at 197 pounds. Down in the second period, Coleman took down Keegan Moore with :03 seconds left in the period. He then added another in the third for a 10-5 triumph. Gannon Gremmel wrapped up the Cyclone victory with a 6-3 win over Carter Isley at heavyweight. Two takedowns by Gremmel was the difference. The takedown tally was even at 15-15. ATHENS, Ohio -- The Cleveland State University wrestling team earned its first win of the season and evened its record at 1-1 in Mid-American Conference play on Sunday afternoon. The Vikings (1-3, 1-1) dropped the first two bouts of the dual before taking seven of eight matches the rest of the way, including five straight, to clinch a 23-12 victory. Ohio's Oscar Sanchez secured the lone takedown of the 125-pound bout to claim a 3-2 win over Jake Manley to open the proceedings. The Bobcats extended their lead to 6-0 with another narrow decision at 133 pounds. Ohio's Mario Guillen logged four takedowns in his 9-6 win over Vikings sophomore Logan Heil, who drew within a point with a first-period reversal and trailed only 6-5 before Guillen pulled away in the third. Redshirt freshman Joseph Caprella brought Cleveland State back from the early hole with his first collegiate pin late in the opening period of the 141-pound match. Caprella opened with an emphatic takedown near the edge of the circle before Kyran Hagan tied things up at 2-2. Caprella answered quickly with a reversal that led to the fall. Marcus Robinson controlled the 149-pound bout throughout, grabbing his fifth win of the year via a 10-1 major decision. Robinson moved to a perfect 2-0 in Mid-American Conference while putting the Vikings up 10-6 overall. Freshman Daniel Patten battled for three full periods in addition to overtime against Nick Vestal at 157 pounds in what turned out to be one of the most intense matches of the afternoon. With Vestal ahead 1-0 entering the third, Patten opted to begin the period on the mat and managed an escape after being pushed out of bounds to tie it at 1-1. Vestal was awarded a takedown with the clock ticking down in the third period, but a timely challenge by the Cleveland State coaching staff wiped out the points to maintain the deadlock and send the bout to sudden-death overtime. Neither wrestler scored in the overtime period, which prompted a pair of 30-second tiebreakers, beginning with Patten on top. Patten rode Vestal for the entirety of the first period before another Cleveland State challenge resulted in a point for Patten due to a technical violation on a locked hands call. Patten ultimately took the bout 5-1 thanks to some late heroics paired with the additional point for riding time. Redshirt sophomore Riley Smucker spent most of the 165-pound match on top of Ohio's Kamal Adewumi, recording five takedowns while notching the riding time point for another major decision at 11-1 to extend Cleveland State's advantage to double digits at 17-6 with only four bouts remaining. In the 174-pound match, Anthony Rice was responsible for four of five takedowns in a 10-4 win, also snagging the extra point for riding time. Wrestling with a national ranking to his name for the first time, DeAndre Nassar fell to 5-2 on the campaign with a razor thin overtime loss that went the distance against Carson Brewer at 184 pounds. Nassar trailed 1-0 before a third-period escape knotted the match. The sudden-death period was scoreless before both wrestlers escaped during the 30-second ride out periods. Brewer began the second extra frame on the ground and nearly broke free before Nassar tossed him back to the mat. Brewer took the lead with an escape, but after an unsuccessful Ohio challenge in search of a locked hands technical violation, Nassar began the final ride out on the bottom and escaped. Unfortunately, Brewer's 25 seconds of riding time gave him a 4-3 decision. Justin Jaekin wrestled conservatively at 197 pounds but achieved his goal of clinching the dual win for Cleveland State, falling 1-0 while keeping the Bobcats from securing extra points and maintaining a 20-12 Vikings edge with only one match remaining. John Kelbly put the cherry on top of a successful afternoon with his win in the heavyweight bout. Kelbly forced overtime with an escape in the final seconds, making the score 4-4. The redshirt junior avoided some early trouble in the extra frame and earned a takedown for the 6-4 win. With the conclusion of the regular season, the Viking will now have two weeks to prepare for the MAC Tournament on February 26-27. The Nittany Lions won 18-13 in a dual meet rescheduled from Feb. 7. All team and individual rankings listed are InterMat (2/9/21). By virtue of the dual meet win, Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson grabbed his 200th dual meet victory as a collegiate head coach. Sanderson is now 200-26-2 overall in this, his 15th season as head coach, including a 44-10 mark in three years at Iowa State. He is 156-16-2 in this, his 12th season at Penn State. Sanderson is also 86-11-1 in Big Ten dual meets. Freshman Carter Starocci (Erie, Pa.) notched a key win at 174 in the tightly contested dual meet and true freshman Robert Howard (Cranford, N.J.) made his collegiate debut, winning at 125. Howard made his Penn State debut at 125 picked up an impressive win in his first bout. Howard used takedowns in the first and second periods to post a 6-5 win over Michigan's Jack Medley in the dual's opening bout. Junior Roman Bravo-Young (Tucson, Ariz.), ranked No. 3 at 133, dominated Dylan Ragusin, who was ranked No. 8 at 125. Bravo-Young used three takedowns and 2:15 in riding time to roll to a 9-2 win and put Penn State up 6-0. Senior Nick Lee (Evansville, Ind.), ranked No. 2 at 141, controlled No. 20 Drew Mattin from start to finish in a marquee bout at 141. Lee controlled the entirety of the bout, posting two first period takedowns and a third period takedown to post a 10-4 victory with 2:25 in riding time. . Redshirt freshman Terrell Barraclough (Kaysville, Utah) took to the mat a 149 and nearly posted an upset victory over No. 6 Kanen Storr. Barraclough battled back from an early deficit but lost a tough 4-3 decision to the ranked Wolverine. Junior Brady Berge (Mantorville, Minn.), ranked No. 9 at 157, took on No. 8 Will Lewan next and used a strong takedown in the third period to post an important 3-1 victory. Berge's win gave Penn State a 12-3 lead at the dual's midpoint. Freshman Joe Lee (Evansville, Ind.), ranked No. 6 at 165, suffered a 4-1 upset loss to No. 16 Cameron Amine in the second half's opening bout. Amine used a third period reversal to grab the win. Freshman Starocci, ranked No. 8 at 174, had the statement win of the dual, taking down No. 2 Logan Massa in a marquee match at 174. The freshman battled the veteran evenly taking the bout to sudden victory tied 1-1. After a scoreless extra stanza, Massa chose down in his tie-breaker period and Starocci turned the Wolverine for four back points and posted the thrilling 7-1 (tb) win. Sophomore Aaron Brooks (Hagerstown, Md.), ranked No. 3 at 184, kept Penn State rolling and essentially clinched the dual with a strong 10-5 victory over Michigan's Jaden Bullock. Brooks' win put Penn State up 18-6. Freshman Michael Beard (Pottstown, Pa.), ranked No. 14 at 197, battled No. 1 (at 184) Myles Amine tough throughout his bout with the veteran Wolverine but lost a tough 8-5 decision. . Sophomore Seth Nevills (Clovis, Calif.), ranked No. 7 at 285, took on No. 2 Mason Parris in the dual's final bout and dropped a tough 12-2 major to the ranked Wolverine. Michigan closed out the dual with two victories but Penn State rolled to the 18-13 win to remain unbeaten on the year. Penn State was able to work its way to a slim 12-11 edge in takedowns. The Lions won six of ten bouts and Michigan picked up the dual's lone bonus point on Parris' major at 285. Five extra matches were conducted during the dual meet on a separate mat. This year, with condensed schedules, these extra matches, while not counting towards dual meet scores, are official varsity bouts and count towards NCAA competition minimums. Freshman Donovon Ball (New Cumberland, Pa.) picked up a win at 184 in Penn State's first extra bout, posting a 12-4 major over Bobby Striggow. True freshman Beau Bartlett moved up to 149 for extras and rolled over Cole Mattin in an 8-4 win for the Lion rookie. Senior Luke Gardner (Pottsville, Pa.) moved up to 157 and lost a close 6-4 (sv) decision to Nick Lombard. Nittany Lion sophomore Konner Kraeszig (Louisville, Ky.) fell 5-2 to UM's Reece Hughes in a bout at 165 and Creighton Edsell (Wyalusing, Pa.) posted a 4-3 win at 174 over Max Maylor in the final extra bout of the day. Ragusin took a slight shot at 1:30 but Bravo-Young quickly locked up action and a reset ensued. Bravo-Young used a low shot to gain control of Ragusin's leg but the Wolverine scrambled out of bounds the action resumed in neutral with :45 left in the period. Bravo-Young picked up a late takedown to lead 2-0 after the opening stanza. Ragusin chose down to start the second period and Bravo-Young controlled the Wolverine for over 1:00, building up a 1:00-plus riding time advantage. The Lion junior maintained his top position for the entirety of the second stanza and carried a 2-0 lead with 2:09 in time into the third period. Lee locked up an arm bar, trying to turn Mattin for back points as the clock hit 1:00 but Mattin was able to work his way out of bounds for a reset. Lee worked his riding time up over 2:0 and then finished the period on top to lead 4-1 with 2:08 in time. Storr chose down to start the second period and controlled the action for over a minute. The Lion freshman continued a strong ride, long enough to build up over 1:00 in riding time for himself. Neither wrestler was able to find an offensive opening for the next minute-plus as the first period ended in a 0-0 tie. Lewan chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. Berge nearly connected on a low shot but Lewan was able to slide back to maintain his one-point lead. Berge paced the center of the mat, taking a number of quick low shots that did not connect. The Lion junior trailed 1-0 after two periods. He chose down to start the third stanza and quickly escaped to a 1-1 tie. Brady nearly countered a Lewan shot for a takedown but the Wolverine slipped out of Berge's grasp and the bout continued tied 1-1 with 1:10 left. Lee and Amine battled evenly at the onset, working the middle of the mat for the first minute before Amine locked Lee up at the chest and nearly took the Lion down for an early lead. Lee fought through the move and action continued 0-0 at the 1:30 mark. Lee looked to control the center of the mat for the rest of the period and neither wrestler found any offense for the rest of the time. Tied 0-0, Amine chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. Lee fought off a strong Amine shot, then fought off another Amine shot with :50 left on the clock. Michigan challenged the latter, seeking to overturn the no call. The call was confirmed, no takedown awarded, and Lee trailed 1-0 with :45 on the clock. Down 1-0, Lee chose down to start the third period. Amine controlled the Lion freshman for over 1:00 and worked his riding time advantage up over 1:00 in the process. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- On senior day senior Kyle Luigs pinned his man and two other Hoosiers won by pin as Indiana came away with a 27-13 victory against Maryland on Sunday at Wilkinson Hall. Notes • Indiana improves to 2-5 on the season and they match their most Big Ten dual match wins since the 2016-17 season. • The Hoosiers got off to a quick start with back-to-back pins from Jacob Moran and Kyle Luigs to jump out to a 12-0 advantage. • For Moran it was his first career pin, for Luigs it was his third career pin. • Donnell Washington got the Hoosiers third pin of the day and his second this season, 16 seconds into his match. • Washington improves his individual record to 5-2 on the season. • Freshman Jacob Moran, who started the dual with a pin improves his individual record to 5-3 on the season and gets his second dual match win. • Indiana got two match wins in extra time as Nick South got a take down in the second tiebreaker of his match and Rudy Streck won on a take down in sudden victory. • Graham Rooks improved to 2-1 on the season with a 6-2 decision • The 27 points for Indiana is their most since they beat Maryland 36-3 on Jan. 13, 2019 in the first match in Wilkinson Hall. CHAPEL HILL -- No. 14 North Carolina earned its third-straight victory on Saturday evening against No. 21 Virginia, 25-9. Eight Tar Heel seniors were honored pre-match as part of North Carolina's senior night in Carmichael Arena. Sawyer Davidson, Andrew Gunning, Ethan Hoffman, Devin Kane, Nick Lirette, Will MacDonald, Josh McClure, and Kennedy Monday were each recognized for their commitment to the Carolina Wrestling family. The dual started at the 133-pound weight class with Joe Heilmann donning Carolina Blue. Both wrestlers battled through the first two periods without a score until Heilmann earned an escape 30 seconds into the third period. With a point for riding time, Heilmann knocked off No. 10 Louie Hayes, 2-0, to earn three team points for the Tar Heels. A double-leg takedown early in the first period gave No. 10 Zach Sherman an early advantage in the 141-pound bout in the first ranked matchup of the evening against No. 16 Brian Courtney. An escape in the third period pushed Sherman's advantage to 5-3 and the match would end 5-4 in Sherman's favor. The nation's top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, Austin O'Connor, earned four quick points against UVA's Denton Spencer to take a 4-1 lead early in the opening period. O'Connor dominated the bout and his lead ballooned to 16-5 midway through the third period. A late takedown and a point for riding time earned O'Connor the 19-5 win and gave UNC a 10-0 lead. The three-match winning streak was the first time the Tar Heels knocked off three-straight opponents to begin a dual against ACC competition. Senior Josh McClure battled tough against No. 17 Justin McCoy at 157 pounds and kept the match within reach heading into the third period, but a late escape and takedown by McCoy proved too much and McClure fell 8-2. No. 11 Kennedy Monday's strong start in the 165-pound match was not enough as the senior fell, 17-15. Virginia's No. 13 Jake Keating mounted a comeback that would be cemented with a third period takedown. The Keating win helped UVA pull within four points (10-6) in the team score. The match continued with the 174-pound bout between UNC's No. 18 Clay Lautt and UVA's Vic Marcelli. Low scoring through the first two periods, a late takedown and four back points for Lautt cemented a 7-1 decision. Devin Kane provided the Tar Heel bench a spark after he recorded his second pin of the season in three minutes and 36 seconds into the 184-pound match. With the bout tied at two points in the second period, Kane recorded UNC's only pin of the evening. No. 19 Max Shaw wrestled reigning ACC Champion No. 8 Jay Aiello tough in the 197-pound match. After recording the bout's first points with a quick takedown, Shaw surrendered two takedowns in the second period and fell to Aiello, 9-2. In the night's heavyweight match, UNC's Andrew Gunning earned the match's first points with a first-period takedown. After UVA's Ethan Weatherspoon escaped late in the first, the two traded points until Gunning took a 7-3 lead in the final period. With a point for riding time, Gunning earned the 8-4 decision. The 125-pound match wrapped up the dual for the two squads with Wil Guida in a Carolina singlet. The Tar Heel cruised to a 11-4 victory and gave the Tar Heels a 25-9 team victory. After defeating Pittsburgh and Lehigh a week ago, the Tar Heels ride a three-match win streak into the ACC Championships, which will take place on Feb. 28 in Raleigh, N.C. South Dakota State closed out the dual portion of its wrestling schedule Saturday by defeating Utah Valley, 22-11, at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits improved to 5-6 overall in duals and 2-5 against Big 12 opponents. UVU fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12. SDSU wrestlers rallied to win several close matches in the closing seconds in the early going, building a 15-0 lead in the front half of the dual. Danny Vega started the string of comeback victories, taking down Kase Mauger with about five seconds remaining for a 4-3 victory in the 125-pound matchup. In a battle between ranked wrestlers, 15th-ranked Zach Price pulled out a hard-fought 7-5 decision over 18th-ranked Ty Smith. Price improved to 8-2 on the season. At 141 pounds, 16th-ranked Clay Carlson trailed the Wolverines' Stockton O'Brien, 6-2 after the first period, but came back with a big third period to score a 13-12 decision. Hunter Marko extended the Jackrabbit winning streak to four with a 5-4 victory over Cameron Hunsaker at 149 pounds and 18th-ranked Cade DeVos followed with a 12-8 decision over Danny Snediker in the 157-pound matchup. Utah Valley pulled to within 15-11 with three consecutive victories to open the second half of the dual as Kekana Fouret (165) and fifth-ranked Demetrius Romero (174) each scored major decisions and Hunter Morse won at 184 pounds. Tanner Sloan sealed the dual victory for the Jackrabbits by recording a 14-1 major decision over Jacob Armstrong. Sloan, ranked fifth at 197 pounds in the NCAA coaches panel poll, remained undefeated at 13-0. Blake Wolters closed the dual with a 2-1 overtime victory for the Jackrabbits. Several other Jackrabbits competed in extra matches throughout the day against competitors from Utah Valley, as well as Air Force and North Dakota State. BROOKINGS, S.D. -- No. 15-ranked Jared Franek won both matches at 157 pounds, including the first pin of his career, to help the North Dakota State wrestling team defeat Air Force 28-19 and Utah Valley 25-12 on Saturday, Feb. 13, in Frost Arena. NDSU freshman 197 Owen Pentz added the second and third pins of his career to clinch both victories for the Bison, who finished their dual meet schedule with a 7-3 overall record and 5-2 against Big 12 Conference opponents. Franek, the sophomore from West Fargo, N.D., won his first match of the day 8-2 over Air Force's Parker Simington. It was one of six NDSU victories against Air Force including a first-period pin at 165 pounds by Luke Weber. After the Falcons won at 125 by technical fall, No. 26-ranked 133 Kellyn March recorded an injury default after the first period to give NDSU a 6-5 lead. No. 32-ranked 141 Dylan Droegemueller added an 11-1 major decision to extend the Bison lead to 10-5. Weber's second pin in two weeks put NDSU ahead 19-8, but Air Force answered with a technical fall at 174 before the Bison clinched the win with Michael Nelson's 4-0 decision at 184 pounds and Pentz's pin. Will Lewan picked up a key victory to help Michigan defeat Ohio State (Photo/Sam Janicki, SJanickiPhoto.com) ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior/sophomore Will Lewan used 44 seconds of riding time to earn a double-overtime win in the dual's final bout at 157 pounds and clinch the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's 18-16 win against No. 12 Ohio State on Friday night (Feb. 12) at Crisler Center. The Wolverines split matches evenly, earning bonus points in two, which proved the difference in the win. Lewan, ranked eighth nationally at 157 pounds, edged the Buckeyes' Elijah Cleary, 3-3, in the second round of tiebreakers -- after Ohio State won back-to-back matches at 141 and 149 pounds to take a narrow 16-15 lead into the final bout. Lewan pushed the pace for the majority of the bout but struggled to finish on a couple leg attacks through regulation and two sudden-victory frames. He escaped quickly during the tiebreakers and accumulated 44 seconds of riding time -- over 60 seconds -- to seal the win and improved to 4-0 on the season. Michigan took three of the opening five bouts and earned bonus points from sixth-year Logan Massa and junior Mason Parris, who are ranked second nationally at 174 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. Massa earned a 14-2 major decision against Fritz Schierl, posting four takedowns, four back points off a second-period turk and 3:46 in riding-time advantage. Massa's major decision was matched by OSU at 184 pounds, so Parris' 20-5 technical fall against 13th-ranekd Tate Orndorff proved the difference in the team score. Parris scored seven takedowns -- three apiece in the second and third period -- as well as a four-point leg turk in the second to end the bout at the 6:05 mark. Graduate student Myles Amine made his season debut -- and first collegiate appearance in nearly two years -- at 197 pounds, where he defeated Gavin Hoffman, 8-5, with two takedowns and two back points. Amine put Hoffman in neutral danger for two-and-two in the first period and won an extended scramble off a single-leg attack in the second. Ohio State earned wins in swing matches at 165, 184 and 125 pounds before senior/junior Jack Medley claimed one for Michigan with a gritty 6-4 decision against Jordan Decatur up a weight class at 133 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Medley struck first with an escape and takedown off a carry in the second but saw his lead slip with an OSU reversal and early escape in the third. The Wolverine responded again, scoring off a single-leg attack and using a lengthy ride to lock up the extra point before a late Decatur escape. The Wolfpack (6-1, 4-1 ACC) won nine of the 10 bouts on the evening, and went for bonus points in five. The dual started at 125 pounds and No. 5 Jakob Camacho once again opened with bonus points, as he scored all six takedowns in the bout and added in 1:57 of RT for a 14-5 major decision. Fr. Ryan Jack got a pair of four-point near-falls and ended his bout in the second period with a 19-3 tech fall. The Pack made it three straight to open the dual as No. 10 (at 133 pounds) Jarrett Trombley bumped up a weight class and claimed an 11-5 decision, with over two minutes of RT, at 141 pounds. Fr. Ed Scott scored an upset at 149 pounds, as he used a headlock for a six-point move in the third period to score a 12-6 decision over No. 22 Josh Finesilver. Fellow Fr. AJ Kovacs used a third period ride out, 1:30 total of RT, for a 4-2 decision. At the intermission, NC State won the first five bouts and held an 18-0 lead. No. 17 Thomas Bullard ended his bout in the first period, as he scored a pin 1:53 into his match at 165 pounds. R-So. Alex Faison used a strong third period and came away with a 22-11 major decision at 174 pounds. No. 4 Trent Hidlay received a forfeit win at 184 pounds. Duke's lone win of the night came at 197 pounds, as Kaden Russel locked in a cradle and pinned No. 9 Isaac Trumble in the first period. The Pack closed the night with a win at heavyweight, as No. 17 Deonte Wilson scored a 6-2 decision. The 20th-ranked Navy wrestling team (5-1, 2-0 EIWA) won four of the final six matches, including a match-clinching 14-3 major decision by 157-pound freshman Andrew Cerniglia, to capture a 20-13 victory over Army (2-3, 2-3 EIWA) Friday evening at Christl Arena in the annual Star Match. Heavyweight John Birchmeier broke the 7-7 tie and sparked the Mids' run after scoring a takedown with just three seconds left in his bout to earn the 6-4 victory over Bobby Heald who had never lost a match to the Mids. "Even with not having fans at the match, you could feel the energy in the arena from both teams," said first-year Navy head coach Cary Kolat. "It was important to contain the excitement and make sure our guys were not drained mentally or physically. As exciting of a match as it was, I'm looking forward to having fans in attendance at next year's match." Navy, who now leads the all-time series 50-10-5, claimed its first Star Match victory since defeating the Black Knights 19-17 on Feb. 20, 2016. Meanwhile, it was the Mids' first win at West Point since Kolat's mentor, Bruce Burnett, guided them to a 22-10 win on Feb. 24, 2013. The Mids also cut into Army's lead in the annual Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA in which the Black Knights now hold a narrow 4-3 advantage with the men's and women's indoor track competitions slated for Saturday. The see-saw match saw the two teams trade wins in the first four bouts. Navy got on the scoreboard first with an 11-2 major decision by 12th-ranked Tanner Skidgel at 165 pounds that featured a four-point near fall in the opening period by the two-time defending EIWA champion. Army promptly answered with a major decision of its own when rookie Ben Pasiuk earned a 12-3 major decision over Navy senior Dean Caravela at 174. Navy freshman David Key built a 3-0 advantage in the first two periods and held off Taylor Brown's rally in the final minutes to score a 5-2 victory at 184 pounds and give the Mids a 7-4 lead. Army, however, leveled the match at seven apiece when junior JT Brown upset 18th-ranked Jacob Koser 9-4 at 197 pounds. Birchmeier stepped to the mat having experienced several high pressure situations during his young career, clinching multiple match victories for the Mids as a rookie. The second-year starter found himself in a 3-1 deficit going into the final period, but after an escape he took his first lead in the match with a takedown with 55 seconds remaining in the bout. The lead was short-lived, however, as Heald wiggled free just seven seconds later and knotted the score at 4-all. Birchmeier zeroed in on Heald's right leg and completed the match-winning takedown with only three ticks left on the clock to give Navy the lead for good. Senior 125-pound Logan Treaster made it two in a row for the Mids as he earned a 6-2 win over Ryan Chauvin in what was his final appearance against the Black Knights. "Certainly the turning point of the match was at heavyweight," added Kolat. "Birchmeier's match came down to the wire and he was able to provide us with a big win. It shifted the momentum in our favor and Logan was able to feed off that. Logan is one of the most composed wrestlers we have on our team and he was steady. His opponent didn't come after him in the match, but at the same time you can't make a last second mistake. He kept his focus and got the win." Sophomore Jacob Allen gave way to Mark Montgomery by a 6-3 count at 133 pounds, as Army trimmed the Mids' lead to three at 13-10. However, team captain and 11th-ranked Cody Trybus answered the call and scored a 5-1 decision over Lane Peters at 141 to push Navy's lead back to six. Army was unwilling to break, however, and with two bouts to go, it appeared the Black Knights saved their best two wrestlers for last. Twentieth-ranked P.J. Ogunsanya handled Navy senior Casey Cobb 8-4 at 149 pounds and once again, the match was within reach for Army as the Mids held a three-point edge going into the final bout. Cerniglia, who won back-to-back (2019, '20) PIAA Class 2A state titles and was ranked as high as #3 in the country as a high school senior a year ago, anticipated he would be facing 18th-ranked Markus Hartman. Instead, Cerniglia learned at weigh-ins that Hartman was injured and in turn he met sophomore 157-pound Christian Hunt. Knowing the match was on the line, Cerniglia was on the attack early and often as he built a 10-0 lead before giving up points to Hunt in the third period. He went on to seal the team victory by way of a 14-3 major decision. "Andrew is a game day kid. He's wrestled in some big duals as a Pennsylvania high school wrestler and I felt good about him going into the match. If there was anyone on this team that I would want to be in the position that he was in tonight, a position where the match was on the line, it would be Andrew Cerniglia." Navy, who closed out the dual season by winning five in a row and outscoring those five opponents 163-25 (Clarion 41-3, Lehigh 21-9, Cleveland State 37-0, George Mason 44-0, Army 20-13) will have the next two weeks to prepare for the EIWA Championship slated for Friday, Feb. 26 at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pa. The Mids placed fourth a year ago at the championship and crowned a pair of individual champions in Tanner Skidgel and 165 pounds and Cody Trybus at 141. Virginia Tech with the ACC dual meet championship trophy (Photo/Virginia Tech Athletics) BLACKSBURG -- For the eighth time in school history, Virginia Tech wrestling is an ACC champion after defeating Pitt 27-12 in the final dual of the season Friday night to win the ACC Dual Meet Championship outright. With the win, the No. 4 Hokies (9-0, 5-0 ACC) cap off their seventh undefeated season in school history, the first since the 1956-57 season. Head coach Tony Robie is the fourth coach in program history to accomplish the feat, and at 9-0, this is the Hokies' longest undefeated season, topping the 8-0 1954-55 team. Tech has now won the ACC Dual Meet Title four times, matching its number of ACC Championship titles. The trophy is back in Blacksburg after the Hokies three-peated as conference regular season champs from the 2014-15 season through 2016-17. MATCH HIGHLIGHTS The reigning ACC Wrestler of the Week Sam Latona finished off an undefeated regular season of his own with a 12-3 major decision over Pitt's Colton Camacho. Latona will enter the postseason with an 8-0 record, including two wins over ranked opponents. The fifth-ranked 125-pounder in the country outscored his opponents 29-0, registering four bonus-point wins this season. Bryce Andonian won his seventh match of the year and picked up bonus points for the fifth time with a 10-1 major decision over Mick Burnett. The 2020 ACC 149-pound runner-up finished the conference season at 4-1 and outscored ACC opponents 17-3. Connor Brady secured his first win at Cassell Coliseum and did so in convincing fashion with a 12-1 major decision over Tyler Badgett, his first career bonus-point victory in an ACC dual. The redshirt freshman had a four-point near fall in the second period to distance himself out to a 9-1 lead and hung on for the win without being brought to the mat. At 174 pounds, Dakota Howard had the performance of the night with a 21-6 technical fall in 5:05. Howard continuously dropped Jared McGill, racking up six takedowns and two four-point near falls in just over two periods. The one-time ACC Wrestler of the Week has now secured bonus points in 11 of his 16 career wins. Sending a message before the postseason was Hunter Bolen, who came away with a 12-4 major decision over Gregg Harvey. The second-ranked 184-pound wrestler in the nation, Bolen scored five takedowns and controlled Harvey for 2:53 of riding time. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 17th-ranked Purdue wrestling team made the most of its final regular-season road trip of 2021, taking 6-of-10 matches at No. 22 Michigan State in a 21-12 victory over the Spartans. Senior Max Lyon picked up the signature win of the night, downing No. 9 Layne Malczewski 6-1 at 184 pounds, while junior Parker Filius and senior Griffin Parriott put up bonus points as Purdue improved to 3-5 overall. Joining Lyon, Filius and Parriott in the win column were freshman Jacob Rundell, sophomore Kendall Coleman and senior Jamarcus Grant, all winning by decision to shore up the team victory, Purdue's eighth straight over the Spartans. MSU grabbed the early momentum with a 10-4 decision for No. 12 Rayvon Foley over 10th-ranked Purdue senior Devin Schroder at 125, but the tide would swing back the Boilermakers' way in a strong fashion. Rundell started a charge of four straight Purdue wins, earning his first career varsity dual victory with a 5-1 decision over No. 29 Jordan Hamden at 133. After a strong ride in the second period, Rundell did all his scoring in the third, posting an escape, a takedown a stalling point and a riding-time point. The Boilermakers revved the engines at 141 and 149 as Filius and Parriott posted back-to-back bonus points to extend the lead. Filius scored often and early, rolling up a 19-2 technical fall over Jaden Enriquez, while Parriott had a huge third period on his way to an 11-2 major decision over Peyton Omania. Coleman, ranked seventh in the nation at 157, rallied late to takeout 25th-ranked, upstart freshman Chase Saldate, scoring in overtime for a 6-4 sudden victory. Saldate struck first, scoring a takedown to take a 3-1 lead in the third, but Coleman escaped and responded with a takedown of his own, leading to a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation. Coleman got on his offense quick in the extra period, needing about 20 seconds to score and seal the win, pushing Purdue's lead to 15-3 at the halfway mark. MSU answered with late victories at 165 and 174, getting a takedown in the final 20 seconds for a 3-1 win for No. 20 Jake Tucker over Purdue freshman Gerrit Nijenhuis, and then scoring in sudden victory to see No. 16 Drew Hughes edge Emil Soehnlen. Lyon responded in a big way at 184 pounds, picking up his third top-10 victory of the season as he led wire-to-wire over Malczewski. After an insane first period scramble, Lyon quickly scored after a restart, taking a 2-1 lead into the second after a locked hands call. Lyon rode Malczewski out in the second and then got to a third-period reversal before riding him out again, piling up 4:08 of riding time in the win. Purdue sophomore Thomas Penola had an impressive performance against No. 4 Cameron Caffey at 197 pounds, but came up short in a 9-7 decision. Penola scored two takedowns in the second to take a 4-3 lead, and escaped to start the third to make it 5-3, but Caffey took Penola down to his back and picked up six to score the decisive points. Penola reversed Caffey late, but couldn't cover the final difference as MSU cut Purdue's lead to 18-12 going into the final match. Heavyweight was a low-scoring affair as MSU's Christian Rebottaro held a 1-0 lead late in the third period after an escape to start the second. Grant reversed Rebottaro to his back and picked up four points to secure his first win of the season and finish off the team victory. CLARION, Pa. -- The Golden Eagle wrestling team closed out their dual match season with a dominant victory at home, cruising to a 35-6 win over Messiah College in Tippin Gymnasium on Friday night. Clarion closes out their dual season with a 3-5 overall record as they prep for the 2021 MAC Championships at Rider in two weeks. In some ways, the final score was not indicative of the drama throughout the dual, as Messiah kept it close in some crucial moments. The Golden Eagles actually overcame an early team deficit during the team match, eventually taking the lead for good after Joe Sliwoski's major decision over Jake Coniglio. Though there were close individual bouts the rest of the way, Clarion did not drop a match in the team dual the rest of the way. Cam Butler and Kyle Schickel eked out tight decisions in the light weights, with the latter winning on a 7-6 tiebreaker after riding Dalton Daugherty out. Sliwoski scored a dominant dual win during his senior night, notching a 12-4 major decision over Jake Coniglio to put Clarion ahead 10-6. They shut the Falcons out the rest of the way, starting with a 6-1 decision by Tate Ortz over Nick Barnhart and a 15-3 major decision by Kolby Ho. Caleb Hetrick and Max Wohlabaugh added decisions at 174 and 184, respectively, but the Golden Eagles' heaviest weights were the ones to put the final nails in the coffin. Ryan Weinzen worked Spencer Clements over for a win by fall with 24 seconds left in the second period, and Ty Bagoly flattened Carter Urich late in the first period to set the final deficit. As it turned out, the Golden Eagles were dominant during the extra match session as well, with Messiah's only win coming on an injury default. KENT, OHIO -- Kent State honored seniors Joe Andrassy, Tomas Gutierrez and Raphael Rodriguez in a pre-match ceremony and the Flashes combined for 17 victories in a round-robin with Edinboro and Northern Illinois. Jake Ferri continued his winning way, extending his unbeaten streak to 10 straight with wins by technical fall and major decision. Brendon Fenton stayed unbeaten this year as well, winning by decision and recording a fall in his two matches. The matches of the day were at 174 pounds as the starters for all three schools were ranked in the InterMat top-20. McNally, ranked sixth by InterMat, took down Mason Kauffman of Northern Illinois, who came in ranked 20th. McNally controlled the match, winning a 6-2 decision on the back of a pair of takedowns. McNally then edged 14th ranked Jacob Oliver of Edinboro by a 7-6 decision in McNally's other match of the day. A back-and-forth match swung in McNally's favor after a reversal late in the third broke a 5-5 tie and Oliver's ensuing escape would not be enough to send the match into sudden victory. Colin McCracken was the fourth wrestler to go unbeaten on the day. McCracken has now won eight-of-nine after picking up a pair of victories by decision. He avenged a 2020 loss to Gage Braun of Northern Illinois, earning a 4-3 victory on Friday. McCracken later earned a 5-3 victory over Cody Mulligan of Edinboro and now is 8-3 on the season. The Flashes will now rest and get ready for the Mid-American Conference Championships, hosted by Rider. Day one of the two-day event is set for Friday, February 26.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Lehigh's wrestling match against Bucknell, scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall has been canceled. Due to an uptick in COVID-19 cases on its campus, Bucknell University shifted to remote instruction protocols on Feb. 5 with those protocols including restrictions on in-person gatherings. Bucknell has extended those restrictions through next week, forcing the cancellation of Sunday's dual. The Mountain Hawks conclude the dual season at 3-4 and will next shift focus to the 117th EIWA Championships, recently announced as a one-day event, Feb. 26 at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pa.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 10 Gopher wrestling team (6-2) won eight of 10 matches in a 27-7 win at No. 20 Wisconsin on Friday morning. He pinned the Badgers' Pete Christensen in 3:20 to improve to 8-0 and 58-2 in his career. His 25-match win streak ranks 20th in program history and is five shy of his own career best. Wisconsin took an early lead with an upset at 125 pounds, but the Gophers responded with five straight decisions. Boo Dryden defeated Kyle Burwick, 5-2, at 133 pounds, while Marcos Polanco downed Dominic Demento, 4-0 at 141 pounds. Michael Blockhus broke a 6-6 tie with a reversal to begin the third period at 149 pounds en route to a 13-8 decision against Drew Scharenbrock. In the middle of the Gopher lineup, sophomore Brayton Lee and true freshman Andrew Sparks improved to a combined 14-2 on the year with wins. Lee defeated Garrett Model, 11-7, at 157 pounds, while Sparks topped Josh Otto, 7-5, at 165 pounds. After the Badgers cut Minnesota's lead to 15-7 with a decision at 174, the Gophers closed out the dual with three straight victories. After upsetting three straight ranked opponents and climbing to No. 11 nationally at 184 pounds, Owen Webster defeated Tyler Dow, 5-1. Garrett Joles followed with a 9-4 decision against Andrew Salemme at 197 pounds before Steveson finished the day with his third fall of the year. The Golden Gophers will close out the regular season at Maturi Pavilion at Noon on Sunday, Feb. 21, when they host No. 12 Northwestern. Michigan hosts Ohio State on Friday, Feb. 12, post-press. Penn State will enter the weekend with a 3-0 mark and has not wrestled since Feb. 2. The Lions went 3-0 on a five-day swing through the Midwest that saw them down Indiana, Northwestern and Wisconsin by a combined score of 87-34. Head coach Cael Sanderson's crew is being led by a trio of returning All-Americans. Lock Haven University announced Thursday they will be attending its conference tournament and returning to NCAA competition this year. Their addition is sure to add a wrinkle into the conference tournament, but with so many cancellations this season and so few opportunities for anyone to compete they are on the same playing field with the teams who have managed to eke out a few matches. Rust won't be an issue since everyone will seem to share that issue. Congrats for Coach Moore and his team for the opportunity to compete. The other big news Thursday was the announcement by the Ivy League that due to the cancellation of this season the senior athletes unable to compete will be granted a graduate season in which to play their respective sport. That's an incredible gesture for a normally stuffy league but does present the difficulty of the athletes earning post-graduate admissions at an Ivy League school. I'd assume that most will simply take off this semester, but for those that don't, or can't, it'll be an interesting process to see how they continue their educational requirements for the season. Where do you think he fits into the mix for the Olympic spot at 57 kilograms? -- Mike C. Foley: Right now, Daton Fix is the last person to compete at the World Championships on behalf of the United States. His close loss to Yuki Takahashi was mostly due to poor match management and a very bad challenge. And while he wasn't dragged into the repechage because of Yuki's loss to Ravi Kumar, he was -- in my opinion -- one of the top five wrestlers at the weight. Now, post-suspension, he can start to compete for his spot. He's older, but there hasn't been a ton of competition. Thomas Gilman earned the spot in Ottawa and has been pretty active since. Add in Spencer Lee, who looks as good as anyone in the world, and you have a three-person race for the 57-kilogram crown. I see Spencer Lee winning the Trials, but I also see that all three of the athletes mentioned are top-rate competitors who are able to train hard and place in Tokyo. Q: I am hearing Myles Amine will be competing at 197 starting this weekend. Do you see him as the favorite to win the title at 197? -- Mike C. Foley: Of course, he's the favorite! The competition at 197 pounds is pretty open with Eric Schultz the new No.1, but an array of other guys who could hold the top spot by conference. Given his international success, I think Myles Amine is the best upperweight in the country not named Gable. Regardless of the reasons he's moving up, I'm sure that being able to keep a weight above what he needs to make for the Olympic Games is a massive factor in consideration. The Olympics are every four years and while the NCAA title might be a nice title to earn I'm sure that Amine's focus is on Tokyo 2021 and earing medals there. MULTIMEDIA HALFTIME Fix vs. Yuki Usman with the win over Downey! Q: It was announced this week that Penn State will not be hosting the Olympic Trials this year. I saw a tweet (rumor) that it will be moving to Fort Worth, Texas. Any idea whether this is true? -- Mike C. Foley: The answer to this question came in after I started writing, but I like my response … Seems like a super-specific guess, no. I'd think that the Trials would need to move somewhere with extremely lax COVID protocols and infrastructure able to accommodate the quick arrival of a large sporting event. Additionally, it would need to be an area with no current college team since most universities are looking to take on LESS risk. So from my estimation that would have left Texas and Florida. The latter is swimming in COVID cases, including the new variants and has limited options for host cities: Orlando, Tampa Bay, and Jacksonville. The former believes itself to be a republic only loosely tethered to the norms, rules, and laws of the upper 48. Texas would make sense! Dallas, Ft. Worth, or Houston are all great options, but we will see what USA Wrestling says!

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Rider University wrestling team won six of 10 bouts Thursday night to defeat Drexel, 20-16, at Alumni Gym. With the win, the Broncs close out the dual season at 4-1, while the Dragons (2-1) took their first loss. Rider earned decisions in each of the first three bouts to take a 9-0 lead, as Jonathan Tropea (Harrington Park, NJ/Saint Joseph (Montvale)), Richie Koehler (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) and McKenzie Bell (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway) at 125, 133 and 141 lbs. Drexel wrestled back into the match with a decision at 149 lbs. and a major decision at 157 lbs., before Jake Silverstein (Hauppauge, NY/Smithtown [Nebraska]) earned a tiebreaker victory over Evan Barczak at 165 lbs. to give Rider a 12-7 lead. CONCORD, N.C. -- Team Simon Roberts came through to win the inaugural America's Cup, a six-team freestyle dual meet event held Wednesday and Thursday in Concord, N.C. Team Simon Roberts capped off a 4-0 weekend with a 4-2 victory in the finals over Team Lloyd Keaser. Daniel DeShazer (57 kilograms), Pat Lugo (65 kilograms), Evan Wick (74 kilograms) and Mark Hall (86 kilograms) helped Team Simon Roberts get out to a 4-0 lead, which sealed the victory. DeShazer opened with a 10-0 technical superiority over Guesseppe Rea. After building a 6-0 lead, DeShazer used a trapped-arm gut wrench late in the first period to turn Rea twice and close out the match. Lugo received a forfeit at 65 kilograms. (Lugo fell to Yianni Diakomihalis in an exhibition match.) At 74 kilograms, Wick won a hard-fought battle (8-6) over Chad Walsh to put Team Simon Roberts up 3-0. Hall put the dual meet out of reach by edging Chris Foca 4-3 at 86 kilograms. Team Lloyd Keaser would get wins in the final two matches from Wolfpack WC members Michael Macchiavello and Nick Gwiazdowski.
