Hot take: I don’t think Steveson wins NCAA’s
boconnell replied to 1032004's topic in College Wrestling
I was massively wrong. I was also massively happy as an OSU fan and a Hendrickson fan. A happy idiot is a great thing to be tonight. -
Call stalling throughout the OT when he was stalling. Don't call it after an escape on the edge.
-
I think everything about ESPN's wrestling coverage is aimed at grabbing the so called regular fan. They have Rock Harrison explain rules like viewers have never seen the sport. It would be like explaining what the line of scrimmage is in an NFL game. I am guessing 95% of NCAA wrestling viewers are hardcore wrestling fans. But they aim it at bringing in the 5% who are not. It's dumb.

Funny how few were picking Hendrickson before the match and now so many declare that Kerk was diminished his last match and that's why he lost this one.
-
Not many do against Hendrickson.
-
Is there video of the Jordan Williams match earlier or does anybody know what mat he was on so I can just go back on that stream?
-
I can definitely see Kerk as the offensive equal or perhaps better in neutral.
-
What are you basing this on? When is Hendrickson in need of a TD and he can't get it? In his worst match of the year he took down Schultz multiple times. The same number of times that Kerk did. I think in neutral they are definitely comparable offensively (with Kerk better defensively). I think it's no question that Hendrickson has more offense from top. If you are talking about most offensive in neutral then I think it's reasonable to say Kerk is the 2nd best. If you are saying most offensive then top matters and it's Hendrickson.
-
At worst? It's clearly worse than Steveson's and it's not close. He can't score on the guys that Steveson scores on repeatedly (world gold level guys). So it's at best second best. And he doesn't have more offense than Hendrickson. He's cleaner in his technique. He's much better defensively. But Hendrickson has just as much offense in neutral and more from top.

I think it's incredible that Snyder wrestled up at heavyweight and won against really good NCAA competition. It was never his weight class. He was just that good. I think there is a zero percent chance he ever would have entered heavyweight if they were in college at the same time. And why would he? Who weighs in 50 lbs light against equal competition? I don't think you can definitively say anyone has ever been better at wrestling while in college than Kyle Snyder was. He's firmly in the conversation for the highest peak of any NCAA wrestler ever. But weight classes matter. He wasn't the best or probably even one of the best NCAA heavyweights ever because he was never seriously a heavyweight. The entire time he was still wrestling 211 the moment the season was over. There wasn't even a chance to do a dirty bulk job to 245-250. I don't see any way he competes with Gable, just like I see no way he loses to senior year Kyle Dake. It just isn't fair to give up that much weight at the highest level.

Why would it matter who they were beating in season and who they were beating before the season at the olympic tournament? Why would beating Adam Coon matter in deciding who was better between two guys who were actual Olympic champs? They have credentials that far surpass Adam Coon, so declaring that the victory over coon is what separates them is silly.
-
I said 'being' not 'beating'. Steveson was the gold Medalist. Snyder beat a silver medalist. That's not advantage Snyder. Snyder's own gold medal is far more impressive than him beating a silver medalist. But winning gold doesn't put him ahead of another guy winning gold. Especially in an argument about heavyweight where Snyder's golds and wins over medalists come 70 lbs down.
-
Why would beating a silver medalist be better than being the gold medalist.
-
That's probably because there are two guys who won world golds before their senior year and also had more credentials across the board.
-
This is a tremendous job of doubling down on being wrong.

If you're going to troll, at least troll with accurate numbers. Average home attendance 2024 (2025 isn't available) Iowa - 14,847 PSU - 7337 OSU - 5871 And OSU has come up quite a bit this year to almost 7500. So if you want to say Iowa makes them both look minor league go ahead. If you want to claim PSU is major league attendance compared to OSU, then you're just telling stories.
-
OSU doesn't need help getting people to show up and promote the sport. But it would be great if they schedule each other.

Travis as the #33 at 149 is interesting. I knew he'd be low but I thought he'd at least get above the guys he beat at Big 12s. He was 4th in the Big 12 and beat McDougal 7-1 and McDougal and Willochell the 8th place finisher and WC selection from Wyoming are both ahead of him. I guess the NCAA really doesn't want guys to enter after sitting all year.
-
I'd agree that college Snyder was just as good a wrestler as Steveson. They both beat some incredible opponents during that time. I just think the 50ish pounds would matter quite a bit.
-
In the final seconds it looked like he could have gotten away with that whizzer and instead he tried to hip over. I know he's always going for big moves, but that seemed like the time to just circle front and grab 1 and the win.
-
None of Snyder's international medals came at heavyweight. I don't think peak snyder has a chance with Steveson.
-
The year with Konrad and Mocco and Cain Velasquez in 3rd or 4th was pretty great. You can't top Steveson, but I'd take senior Mocco over Kervliet for sure.
-
I normally love Rock Harrison. But him explaining every basic call to the TV audience like we are 5 years old is brutal.
-
If only he hadn't called a guy out initially and started the whole topic. If you don't want idiots on the internet on your back, don't do stuff like that.
