How about this young man? He just won Ironman, which is a tremendous accomplishment all by itself. But from what I gather from news sources, that’s only a small part of his story.

He started wrestling in 9th grade, which means he’s become truly elite in  only a little over three years. That’s obviously rare. I’ve only heard of such trajectories in guys like Lee Kemp (9th grade) or Mark Schultz (11th grade).

But there’s more. The reason he started wrestling in the first place was he couldn’t get to football practice in the morning — because he was experiencing homelessness. He lived in hotels and then a shelter for six months, where he slept on the floor and had no desk. He also missed mealtimes there due to his schedule, so he ate at school or with his coach. Happily, his family secured a home at the end of his 9th grade year.

There are impressive athletes and there are impressive people—and White is both.

Sounds like an amazing achievement. That kid must be tough and resilient. The kid obviously has natural talent to have taken to the sport so quickly. I bet he watched tons of wrestling matches on youtube!

An amazing story for sure. Think I saw him ranked in the 50s? I’d expect that to change significantly as the season progresses. Hopefully free college and some NIL money to boot. Definitely a case of a sport possibly completely changing the trajectory of a young man’s life for the better.

But is it true he was on track to be a heart surgeon before he discovered wrestling?

Sounds like a good story line for a  motivational, feel good movie.  Aren't we about due for a "Vision Quest 2" and a modern redo of Lunatic Fringe?  Have it hit the movie theaters right at holiday season/national duals.

Wasn't Gabe Dean ranked in the 40s or 50s when he came out of HS?

He was right in the interview that he was the 1st Ironman champ from Indiana. Not to take anything away from that part of the accomplishment, but this is only the 4th season that IHSAA regulations have allowed us to compete at the Ironman against teams from more than 300 miles from our borders. Connor Maddox won 106 a few minutes after White won, and we had 8 other placers for 10 total from 40 entrants.

Crazy trajectory for White. Broke thru a little with an upset to get on the Indiana podium as a sophomore in only his second year of wrestling, takes 2nd in Indiana as a junior and is looking like a college prospect with fringe national ranking consideration--and now is ranked #1 nationally early in his senior season. Crazy town.
