I was having a hard time exactly filtering through wrestlestat to see who had wrestled the most matches.  But here are a couple guys that stood out to me in my search.  Let me know of any others.  Following three have 30 or more matches against D1 competition so far

  • Tommy Askey, Appalachian State - 33 matches wrestled against D1 wrestlers so far this year at 22-11
  • Kurt Phipps, Bucknell - 31 matches wrestled against D1 wrestlers this year at 21-8
  • Tyler Stoltzfus, Lock Haven - 30 matches wrestled against D1 wrestlers this year at 21-9

How many of those wins were against starters?

It seems smaller schools with lesser known names are ready to scrap much more than larger schools with wider known names. Nothing to lose I expect.

It would be interesting to see which schools have had the most top 8 ranked wrestlers skip or "duck" a match.

Some of those smaller schools with less known names also come from the smaller conferences which are fighting for NCAA qualification bids whereas the BIG10 will not have that problem. The more opportunities that the smaller schools gives their athletes the greater the chance of earning that qualification spot come conferences. I am not 100% that this is the mindset but I definitely think it is a factor.

I wouldn't disagree with that... they haven't earned the right to duck yet.

If they are not wrestling D1 starters or guys with a decent ranking,  they aren't getting the quality wins they need to get the qualification.

App St starters in general have wrestled a good amount, I didn't go all the way down the rabbit hole as far as how many are vs D1, but per wrestlestat their starters have 24, 20, 21, 25, 34, 29, 27, 21, 26, and 21 matches. Meanwhile I know of some programs where no starter has hit the 20 match mark yet.

@JVStateChamp this supports your contention as far smaller schools from smaller conferences

Going through the Wrestlestat top 10 teams and Penn State, Iowa, Mizzou, NC State, OK State have no starters with 20 matches. Ohio State has Sasso and Romero over 20, Cornell has Cornella at 20, VT has Latona and Ventresca over 20, Pitt has Tyler Badgett at 20, Nebraska has Hardy, Labbs, Allred, Davidson over 20 matches.

I will also throw in my Jackrabbits who have Jordan, Cardinal, Carlson, Martin, DeVos, & King with 20 or more
