Everyone knows about the lazy wrestlers who just want to get off the mat and get some rest - The Pinfellers.

But what about the guys who like to play with their food, get in the extra work, score more points - The Rinse and Repeaters.

There was a time when there was no tech fall. If you wanted to take a guy down, cut him ,and do it all over again (and again and again), you could. It wasn't your job to stop you from running up the score. It was the other guy's job. So it is a pleasant surprise that the top match point scorer of all-time comes from the TF era (1985 - present).

I give you the guys who racked up the points on the way to victory.

Of course, this isn't all about takedowns. Back points were available. But it is a lot about takedowns.

These totals do not include any points scored on the way to pinfalls, as those are not recorded in the brackets.

Now let's look at just the TF era. For this we will go a bit deeper to include anyone who scored at least 75 match points in a single tournament

You may be wondering how that compares to recent times. Well, wonder no more. The leaders for the 2025 tournament:

Anyone else surprised to see Mesenbrink outscored at his own weight?

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

It's suprising, but Hall had almost all high scoring matches. When he won by decision it was usually like 8-1, and scored a takedown in all but 3 matches. He also wrestled 5 more matches than Mesenbrink which put him over the edge. I wish he got more attention because he was really exciting to watch at ncaas.

Someone asked a question about losing scores in TF matches over time on HVI.

Here is the answer.

Something happened in 2003. But I can find nothing in the rules to explain it.

  • From 1985 to 2002 the average TF losing score was 3.7 and never below 2.6
  • Then it fell off a cliff from 2003 to 2010 to an average of 2.0
  • Since 2011 the average has recovered a little to 2.7, but never returned to the good old days.

I checked that one. The shift from 3 pt to either 2 or 4 didn't happen until 2016.

I know.  Had to joke that all the extra scoring isn’t really making matches feel like they did in the olden days.

Will someone check this guy’s math?!? 😄 Kidding, kidding—but let’s put Charlie Heard’s 1984 run under the microscope for a second.

Now @Wrestleknownothing did say, “I give you the guys who racked up the points on the way to victory.” But if you throw in that 6-7 loss to Bob Hallman, Charlie’s tournament total jumps to 102 points. That actually puts him at the very top for single-year scoring—talk about piling it on!

Wrestling stats never sleep!

When you include losses in the list the order changes slightly (turns out scoring a lot of points is correlated with winning).

Can I ask you a serious question, and I already know this is going to come across wrong. I see people spend countless hours on stuff like this, and I am thankful.  BUT, are you retired? IF not retired, are you self-employed? Kids? Again, I know I sound like a d*ck, I do not want it to come across like that, but I find myself at times not being able to eat lunch because of my job, or running around. I am fascinated when people can do all of this stuff, or spend countless hours on social media. I get Willie, he does this for a living, but some of you guys can post all over social media and spend hours on posts like this. That Nh dude, hell I see him all over too.  I guess what I am saying, I am jealous as hell that I do not get to enjoy life to spend this much time in forums and social media. I will get back to the group, I may quit my job as I talk through this.

signed- truly jealous

PS. I just looked. you have over 10K posts on this forum. That simply amazes me. I am going to say again, without you type of guys, we do not get to go brag about stats and data to our buddies like we came up with it ourselves.

I have managed my career such that I have a lot of freedom of motion, and I take advantage of it. I am not retired, nor self-employed. My job entails doing similar stuff with financial data, so I have a lot of practice with much, much, much larger data sets (billions of data points), making this fairly easy (but not always). The hardest part is always getting the data, not manipulating it.

As someone else pointed out, I really like numbers. And in wrestling there has been a complete lack of numerical analysis, so I can't not try to fill that void.

I quit my job back at the beginning of 2023 to travel around for most of the year. Have yet to find a new one since due to the fun of the government. However, previously to that I was an instructor, and spent a lot of time in the classroom with nothing to do for 8+ hours a day. That's when I started doing all of the data gathering. No kids. Just really enjoy getting/researching data/history.

I suspect that what takes @Wrestleknownothing a couple of minutes may take most of us hours.  That's probably due to either talent, experience, or both.  I own a machine shop in PA and like nothing better than seeing some of my best employees watching YouTube videos while the 5 axis mills they've programmed are making all of us lots of money.

Wrestleknownothing is the Joe Dimaggio of this forum perhaps.  Makes the difficult look easy.
