Watching the open this weekend and it's baffling how old the high school phenoms are. We've got high school sophomores the same age as high school juniors. What the hell is going on? This is a problem specifically bad for wrestling and is just a bad look for the sport. If and when I have kids, should I just expect to have them either get their ass kicked by 19 year olds or hold them back?

Anyone else annoyed by this?

Junior range allows kids to be from 17-20. Melvin was the only HS sophomore competing to my knowledge.

I really don’t see an issue with this. The kids are wrestling within their appropriate age group or even above it in some cases. Sophomores and juniors wrestle each other all the time, so that argument doesn’t hold much weight. At any typical high school tournament, it’s completely normal for a freshman to wrestle a senior without any concerns.
