Pretty bummed that the US bookends cost the US a shot at the team title, BUT I must say - watching Amouzad close out MFS at 65 KG?  It's always a damned pleasure to watch him wrestle.  I don't know how he lost last year and I don't know how he 'only' took 5th the year prior.  When he is on, he is unbeatable.

Now get him on a treadmill to train cardio!

Yes, though Mamedov has his number so far. He didn't seem particularly on this tournament compared to the Olympics, but beat Kiyooka easily. I wonder what happens if they wrestle 10 times. Seems both guys went into a huge hole in 1 exchange in both matches and then it got out of hand. I also wonder how long Amouzad can even stay at 65. 2028 seems to be a stretch.

can you summarize? I bet he misses the cultural food.

He says Arash is Iran’s son

he then says he has 6 kids, 5 sons and a daughter

i think he was trying to have enough sons for an Olympics team 😀

I remember hearing from some of you guys that he was probably not long for 65 KG after he beat Johnny D in 2022.  So I kind of expected him to work his way up to 74 KG then, but then we had the 2024 Olympics... BUT after his 5th in 2023, I was thinking "There might be a chance."

I would like to see him go the Yazdani route (when he went 74 KG to 86 KG), and just go 74 KG if he is going to go, without stopping at 70 KG, myself.  That said, one year at 70 KG might not be the end of the world for him.

No. The last exchange was never going to be a step out

I feel like he gasses more now. If he had that same match from 2022 with Yianni today it may tire him out

Can you translate what he is saying?  Thanks

I cannot figure out every word he says.  He is angrily scolding him and asks him why he did something, and then walks away .

He also looks huge for 65.  His shoulders are now a lot broader than they used to be

How does he look standing next to Lil Yaz?

Good question.  I would love to know.  I wish UWWDOC would join us again.

regardless, I would expect Rahman to demolish him.

Amouzad just won 65kg final comfortably. He won silver at 65 at the Olympic and another gold 2 years previously. They say 65 is one of the toughest in terms of parity. I would say if you win 2 gold in 4 year and an Olympic silver  so medalling 3 out of 4 years then you are doing something right. I wonder who has done some something to match him- Otoguro? Kiyooka? Mamedov?

I think with that track record he would want to stay at the weight as long as he can

So in years past we did not have 65

but Movahed won 1 Olympic gold and 5 world gold in 68 and 70

This is his twin losing to Yazdani. Of course, his twin is a far inferior wrestler. They seem to be about the same height.

Probably the last one to match him is Ramanov, who went gold 2014 - bronze 2015 - gold 2016 and then got injured and disappeared.

Let’s hope that does not happen to Amouzad then. Will be a loss to wrestling I would have thought

How?

He could/should have been hit with a C+1 when he scooted out of bounds when Snyder had him in the "rear standing" position.

And Snyder's foot was never completely out of bounds at the end there. They showed that pretty clearly during the broadcast.

I was just asking.

i missed the final but I saw Iranian complaining on Instagram about 1 point awarded for Snyder before the last pushout point.

You can make a case for the fingers penalty point being unjustified, but he was still up on criteria after that. Snyder still went and got the score that mattered after that

They didn't select Javan, he simply won all the stages of the trials process.

They selected Yazdani at 70 and it was a disaster. Khalili at least would have gained some experience.

I would say they selected Yazdani ( brought him down from 74  to 70 - result DNP) , Emami ( gave him an extra chance to make the team at the ranking tournament for no reason after losing to Yazdani in the Takhti final - result DNP) and Nokhodi ( Wrestled 0 matches since last worlds - result bronze).

Outside of those 3 wrestlers everyone else made the team on their own merit. The ones they selected underperformed.

IMO if you are going to force someone on the team he absolutely must medal, and maybe even must win a gold.

This is the problem, how are the guys you select underperforming if they are the "right guy" for the weight compared to those who earned it. I feel like they should just do a Final X style of competition to select guys and then send the top 3/5 out to international tournaments for experience. That way no one feels is robbed. They could just make everyone come to Takhti or Nationals. The so called charkhe they have is one of the most bizarre ways of selecting guys I've ever seen.

Overall I feel like our MFS did quite well and its nice that we won the team title back. Here is my ratings for each of our guys.

Ali Momeni (57kg): C-, I don't think he under or over achieved he was never going to beat RBY but I was hoping he might have been able to at least competitive. How much longer do we have to wait for a good 57??

Ahmad Mohamadnezhad Javan (61kg): A-, He navigated his way quite well through to the final (even if it was an easy draw) and showed a lot of fight which I liked, I hope he continues to work hard and stay at this weight class because he might become a consistent medal threat with a couple more years of experience.

Rahman Amouzad (65kg): A+, absolutely phenomenal performance in the final against Kiyooka, it seems like he managed the cut better this time around. As many people have already said, when he is on he is unstoppable. Not much more to say about my favourite wrestler.

Amirmohammad Yazdani (70kg): F, I don't really have much to say he has been a complete disappointment. Can Ebrahimzadeh or Khalili take his spot for next year so he doesn't embarrass us. He ruins an incredibly good draw and chance for us to get a medal. I don't want to see him competing for us again.

Younes Emami (74kg): B, he did well enough to make the repechage and lost what looked like a close match (scoreline) against Salkazanov. He looked rejuvenated, I saw him hit some nice duck unders that he used to do but unfortunately he just doesn't have the quality to compete against the world at 74kg.

Mohammad Nokhodi (79kg): C+, for a guy that had won 4 medals at this weight class previously you would hope he can finally get the job done and win gold. Overall a poor showing by him but I think he hasn't had enough time since his surgery. Still doesn't excuse his loss to the Greek guy. Nokhodi has a weird habit of loosing to eventual champions every year, it seems like he is always the second best guy in the world. Hopefully in the future he can get it together and win it all.

Kamran Ghasempour (86kg): D, I might be a little harsh but the truth is for a 2 time world champ you can't be performing like that against Valencia. Sure the draw screwed him over a little but the champ wins regardless of who is in front of him. Zahid outmuscled him and completely shut his offence down. He needs a complete re-work of his tactics because that was embarrassing.

Amirhossein Firouzpour (92kg): D+, again like Nokhodi and Ghasempour he really should be doing better. How he lost to the Russian guy is beyond me, with Yazdani and Ghasempour's weight situation not certain its quite likely this will be his last worlds for a couple years, he blew his golden shot to win gold.

Amirali Azarpira (97kg): A-, Day 1 I think he was an A+ after being Tazhudinov, Day 2 I'm not so sure. Overall, I thought he would win bronze so he over achieved but considering he had beaten Snyder twice previously this was a disappointing result, however he is only 23 so he has enough time to make up for it.

Amirhossein Zare (125kg): A+, really not much to say. 3x world champ is not for everyone, he is maturing very well at 125kg and is head and shoulders above everyone else. With Gable going to MMA and Geno hiding there isn't anyone internationally that can challenge him.

Considering the oldest guys amongst this group is Ghasempour and Emami who are 28 the future is quite bright for our guys. Obviously 2026 and 2027 worlds are much more telling on how we match up against the rest of the world but so far we outperformed the field. Hopefully our guys use this as motivation to continue to get better and improve.
