Interesting item to add to the discussion is the state-to-state variability in regulations.  Not all states require kindergarten, and the age requirements for compulsory school attendance vary.  Using this 2020 table as an example... for the states that require kindergarten, compulsory education has to occur no later than:

  • Age 5 in AR, CT, DC, HI, MD, NM, OK, RI, SC, SD, and VA
  • Age 7 in LA and NV
