It's very inconsistent which seeds are getting a bye.  How is that decided?  For example - Daton Fix - number one overall seed - doesn't have a first round bye, but 8th seeded Garret Ricks does...

Its random.  Its random every year, isn't that consistent?  🙂

Technically, that's the rule both HS and college. One reason to do it that way is because if high seeds don't get pigtails they lose a chance at bonus points. It does become an issue when events decide to seed all the way down forcing high seeds to get byes. It might not be a problem in, say, the current EIWA with only one pigtail and most of them going to a lot of the same few lower ranked teams.

Good explanation.  I suppose that in an ideal world you could ask each seed - starting with the first - whether they want the bye- and then go down the list.  But it would be a logistical nightmare and so the rotating seeds seems like a far more practical solution.  Thanks for clearing it up
