Why isn't the US sending a 67 kg Greco rep to Pan Am Games?

A total of 168 wrestlers will qualify to compete at the [Pan Am] games. The winner of each weight category at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia qualified directly, along with the top four at the 2022 Pan American Wrestling Championships and 2023 Pan American Wrestling Championships. The host country (Chile) is guaranteed a spot in each event....

We fell short in the last couple Pan Ams at that weight. At the 2022 Pan Am Championships at 67 kg, the medals went to Colombia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Peru. Most recently, at the 2023 Pan Am Championships, the medals went to Cuba, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador.

Only the winner at the 2021 Junior Pan Am Games qualified his country. The winner in that contest was from Cuba.

As clarification for anyone reading, the Pan Am Games and the Pan Am Wrestling Championships are two different things.

The Pan Am Wrestling Championships are used to qualify a country at a weight for the Olympics. That is scheduled for March 6-10, 2024 in Acapulco.

The Pan Am Games, starting Nov. 1, are like a mini Olympics for the western hemisphere. There are 45 other sports in addition to wrestling. Results here stand on their own. They are not part of Olympic qualifying.

Close...

There are actually three different events with similar names but different purposes / formats.

1) The Pan American Games, which, as mentioned above, happen every four years, contain multiple sports, and are like a mini-Olympics (currently underway in Santiago, Chile)

2) UWW Pan-American Championships, which happen every year (including Olympic years) and as far as I know are open to all member countries. Next up in Acapulco, Mexico Feb 21-25, 2024. These do not impact Olympic qualification.

3) UWW Pan-American Olympic Games Qualifier, which happens in Olympic years only and is open to any country that didn't qualify the weight via the prior year's UWW World Championships. Next up in Acapulco, Mexico Mar 1-3, 2024 (some sites say Feb 29 start). Top two finishers in each weight qualify. Any country that doesn't qualify the weight can go to the last-chance UWW World OG Qualifier in May 2024 in Istanbul.
