I saw that the high school finals weren’t wrestled because both teams were Team Shutt. Does anyone have any insight into why they do so well at VA Beach? I’ve wondered this in general about the travel circuits — why do some teams consistently perform at such a high level?

Obviously now there’s a certain prestige that comes with being invited to some of these teams, but where did that really start? I always assumed some of the bigger teams were heavily sponsored and the kids wrestled for free, but I don’t think that’s the case, at least not for all of the kids.

I’ve also wondered whether these teams are built around an established club with a strong core group of kids, or if they mainly put together all-star style teams specifically for big tournaments. If it’s the latter, how are they getting all of the kids to join up with their team?

Does anyone know if Team Shutt is mainly a VA Beach thing, or are they at other major tournaments too? Just kind of curious where their dominance came from, and honestly curious about some of the other top travel teams as well.

Team Shutt hits all the major off season events in eastern US. The biggest being in order of ranked kids: Blaine Shutt stacks his teams. How because it is like Penn State. Everyone just wants the attention being on a Shutt team brings. Normally are mid tier D1 type kids trying to get exposure and get the attention of a higher D1 type school or kids dreaming of just going D1 and landing on a lower tier D1 team. He has got a good thing going. Always has at least two teams at each event and sometimes as much as 7 teams! $

There were more than 7 Shutt teams at NHSCA. There were 7 named with Shutt in the name but my understanding was that there were a few others. A team named E.D.I.T.H was from Shutt. Not sure how many others like that but I thought our system was all screwed up when I walked by a mat with EDITH wrestling and all the kids wore Shutt shirts.

And Blaine charges a pretty good clip for each kid. Crazy how much money they are making. But the kids want to be on his teams. My boys wrestled for him at NHSCA. Very lucrative for a side job.

So he charges more than just his costs?

Shutt makes a killing off of these dual teams. They are not as good as Kong, Kong pays most of the way for their kids. Shutt found a "need" for kids to get exposure, and let's face it, wrestling parents will do almost anything to get that exposure. The key, is grabbing a big time name, and telling him you will pay his way, shirts, singlets, entry etc....then build off of that one or two names and charge the hell out of the rest. When you have 4-5 teams, depending on event, he can clear several thousands of dollars for that weekend. I am not knocking him, I think it is good exposure, but it is what it is. Back in the day though, Kong was the team to beat. STACKED. It usually came down to Kong and Shutt in most finals.
