Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Summary from the Pitt Athletics Website:

PITTSBURGH—In a candidate for NCAA Dual of the Season in 2022-23 college wrestling, No. 18 Pitt dropped a heartbreaker on total points criteria to No. 3 Iowa State, 16-15, in front of a raucous overflow crowd of 2,162 fans on Saturday night at the Fitzgerald Field House.

The Panthers (9-3, 3-0 ACC) and Cyclones (14-2, 6-0 Big 12) split the 10 matches evenly – all by decision. Iowa State won the dual thanks to a 51-44 edge in total points scored across the entire dual.

"Well, that was a heartbreaker at the end but it was outstanding entertainment for a great crowd," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said. "We're very appreciative of all the fans. Overall, I'm proud of our guys and their effort. We continue to get better, but we need to keep building and working hard."

Pitt made a strong start, winning the first three bouts by decision. No. 33 Colton Camacho won with a dramatic sudden-victory takedown over Caleb Fuessley at 125 pounds before No. 6 Micky Phillippi and No. 3 Cole Matthews both earned tight wins by 5-4 scorelines at 133 and 141, respectively.

The Cyclones responded with three consecutive wins of their own, but Pitt's trio did well in those matches to avoid conceding bonus points against the ranked Iowa State wrestlers.

With the dual tied 9-9 heading to 174 pounds, Luca Augustine came up clutch again for the Panthers, defeating MJ Gaitan with a late takedown to put Pitt back in front. That win followed up his upset of No. 8 Clay Lautt of North Carolina on Friday night to secure the dual win for his team.

After Iowa State won at 184 pounds to tie it again, No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi sent the Fitz into a frenzy with a late takedown and nearfall points to beat No. 5 Yonger Bastida, 6-4, in the showcase 197-pound bout. Bonaccorsi remained undefeated on the season with yet another ranked win.

"Nino stayed the course and finally broke through," Gavin said. "He wrestled a great match against a very high-level wrestler. It wasn't easy to score against his stingy defense, but persistence paid off. He loved that he got to face Yonger tonight. He wanted that challenge and embraced it. That's a big deal."

At heavyweight, No. 5 Dayton Pitzer was on the verge of giving Pitt its first dual win against a top-three team in program history, leading No. 10 Sam Schuyler late. But Schuyler worked a takedown in the final 10 seconds to win by 4-3 decision and stun the crowd that was ready to celebrate a classic victory.

The Panthers travel to NC State next Friday night for a decisive ACC dual. Pitt can clinch an outright conference dual title for the first time since 2014 with a victory in Raleigh.
