All 3 with Iowa State.

Does Joe Seay count? He won DII titles and likely would have placed if they counted points those years while also at D1.

J Robinson won a bunch at Minnesota and one at Iowa as acting head coach the year that Gable took an Olympic year off.

1971 PSU Tied for 4th place with Koll as the coach and in 1953 UNI was 4th with Koll as coach.  The 3rd place finish I mentioned earlier came in 1963 when UNI had moved down to D2.  That was at the D2 tournament.

Another UNI coach David McCuskey.  UNI had 7 top 4 finishes under McCuskey from 1937-1952.  McCuskey then went to coach at the University of Iowa where the Hawkeyes had 5 top 4 finishes under him.

The Bakersfield record book has D1 NCAA team placements listed for those years.  I've attached a screenshot of the relevant part.  They have placements but no team point totals for the D2 years (before 1987). Their best placement under Joe Seay was 5th.

I don't know how they came up with the placements.  I assume they would have just calculated team points they would have earned and where that would put them in the standings. I tried that for 1979-1982 and came up with slightly different results.  Not sure why I'm different but best finish I came up with was also 5th.  The main thing preventing them from cracking the top 5 is that they only ever had 2 AAs in a given season.  Those 2 AA were always very high 1st-3rd, but it isn't enough.

Gable retuned after Iowa lost to Oklahoma State that year.
