I certainly cant argue with that. Im veiwing things through an American lense because im American and I like our style best. I can argue why but that wasnt really your point. I am most concerned with American viewership and sport growth. I think folkstyle is more intutitive to the average American sports fan. I dont think freestylr goes about prioritizing exposure in the best way but thats a different argument. Take a shot (of water if you like) every time i say American in this post.

Thats fair. It doesnt make it any more satisfying to watch though. And freestlye fans constantly talk about how the sport needs to be exciting. Leg laces are one of the most common complaints of uneducated viewerrs/new fans when they first see freestyle. Almost no one sees somebody secure a leg lace, roll through 3 times and thinks it looks awesome or exciting. Its not exactly intuitve to a combat sports fan why its such a high scoring technique either. It doesnt appear to accomplish anything from a control perspective, which is what is generally thought of in wrestling. I know freestyle is about quick exposures but to the uninitiated or to people who value control a leg lace is just not a satisfying way to get points for a turn.

Does knowing how to do a leg lace suddenly make the technique awesome to watch? Or do you think plenty of people on this board know how to and have done 100s if not thousands of leg laces and still think its lame as hell?

Iowa is getting undue hate for all the transfers
forkemaz replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Probably not since its neither clever nor catchy -
I dont even understand why jacori and Iowa think theyre a good match. Jacori has a bad gas tank and backs up an insane amount. Hes not iowa style at all. I appreciated his points at ASU but his style is soooo frustrating to watch.

What did he get? how do you know? Obviously im an ASU fan, i private messaged parco (not about a number but about why he would leave) and he ignored me. So im just curious
-
Oof and we just "lost" Art Martori (he aint dead) this is not happy news. ASU wrestling may be on life support for a second time.
-
Richie aint leaving called Parco out as a traitor before he even left

Ive been wanting the pit walls for wrestling since i first saw karate combat. ***duck** the step out. Bring on the pit.

Freestyle is a hot mess and its readily apparrent to most normal people. The people on this board are hard cores and they will defend what they like but youre right there is a lot of subjectivity and that is a problem. The rule set issue is more opinioned based. I dont think think anyone can argue that rules are subjectively enforced in freestyle to a very large degree. Why is there no par terre clock? Its certainly not uniform. Wrestler A just hand fought his way into the under hook why are you blowing it dead to tell them to work?
-
Thats not my opinion thats my experience watching freestyle with anyone who isnt a freestyle zealot, they dont get it and they dont like it. You cant make a comparable list for folkstyle. Look at the post directly above this one, the subjectivity is out of control in freestyle and thats outside the confusing rule set.

This is just plain disingenuious. Why does the referee keep stopping them? Why did that guy score points? Wait why are they now changing their mind and giving that other guy those points? Why did he just get 1 pt? (Shot clock/passivity) Wait a push out is worth a point? Lame Why did he stand them up? Why isnt the guy on bottom doing anything? He just rolled through a bunch of times and its over? Folkstyle is pretty clear. A guy gets on top and gets points. He gets away he gets points. He puts someone on their back, points. A pin is easy to understand. Ride time is probably the most confusing aspect. Non wrestlers or people who have never seen freestyle have almost no clue Wtf is going. Shit people who watch folkstyle can barely get why someone scores over it being the others score, why that guy was put on the shot clock.

Should NCAA wrestling adopt all or some freestyle rules?
forkemaz replied to peanut's topic in International Wrestling
I think 6 point nearfall incetivizes turns and thus people will work for them more and maybe even get more pins. So yes. I think it will be more exciting than scoring slop. And if you can throw him and hold him on his back its 9 points but you have to have control and hold him there. Not just flippiant nonsense scoring that results in no control. So my idea also icentivizes better more technical throwing than yours. -
Its sloppy to score. You frequently see 8 point swings in freestyle because they cant decide whose move it was. Its sloppy because it doesnt end in control which is the entire point of wrestling. Its like slop on the pool table. Call your shot or it doesnt count, same for wrestling get the takedown or its nothing.

Bro i literally gave an idea i think would help increase scores and excitement in my first post you quoted. So wtf are you on about? That i think your sloppy exposure rule sucks? Too bad, it sucks and it doesnt fit american folkstyle. I also think focusing more on duels and less on tournaments would be helpful. More duels, more controlled back points. Do i think that will make viewership go up? Not by much or at all but neither will your dumb idea. -

Viewership is down for all sports dude. Theres more entertainment options that ever before .sports have been trending down. And the matches are less exciting because there isnt such a skill gap from the elites to the others anymore. Its not as easy to style on someone or hit them with a move they have never seen before. -
So if we seeded for the pools and say 1,8,12 16 were a pool. And then we reseed for the tournament based on the pool outcomes, does that fix the problem? Then everyone gets a minimum 3 matches and its 6 or possibly 7 to win the whole thing. I havent mathed out if the pools can end with everyone tied or anything.

Nearfall is exposure that requires top control. Neutral danger is exposure that requires some semblance of control in a scramble. You want to make sloppy non control moves from nuetral worth 4 points. Its crazy talk in my opinion. Exposures require control in folk. Id rather near fall be worth up to 6. 1 point per swipe.
-
It doesnt make any sense with how nearfall is scored according to time duration and it rewards slop. No thank you.

This is the opposite of his point. The rule changes ruined the sport. The same happened to judo. Rule changes are a gamble and we made a few good ones lately with the 3 pt takedown, nuetral danger and the edge wrestling rules. I think NCAA wrestling is in a great spot right now and im not saying it cant be changed but the changes should be well thought out and adress whats missing in folk, namely more turns. If it were up to me id make nearfall worth one point per swipe from 2-6 pts. Nearly pinning your opponent is now worth two takedowns and turns are the highest form of scoring by a larger margin as they should be. Everything else is pretty damn good right now. -
When and what was the problems they had?

I just feel like should say im under 35 and my entire crew of wrestling friends are under 35 and we watch less freestyle than the demographic you mentioned of 50+ (in the crowds i run in) . I wouldnt buy season tickets to freestyle and would likely give up watching and i know my friends would as i watch more freestyle than any of them. I think you are really underestimating why people enjoy folkstyle. Im not trying to start the argument all over again im just throwing in my 2 cents on this last post. I dont want to feel like ive outgrown watching wrestling but switching to freestlye would do it. I stopped watching football because they ruined the game with rule changes. In fact you hear that about the NBA and NFL (i beleive veiwership may be up for NFL/NBA? I dont really know) and i would do the same if we get rid of American style wrestling. I think others might feel the same way, change the rules, change the game, lose fans. -

Chael actually did have freestyle in the octagon it was terrible lol. You can watch it on ufc fight pass. What would be amazing is the karate combat pit. But i get laughed at when ever i suggest it. Also it would be an expensive overhaul.
