2027 Big Boarders
Hoyt Matthews replied to Indiana-Hawk-Wrestling-Fan's topic in High School Wrestling
Plus with all the dual events etc and NHSCA being so close to so many schools it is easier to see these kids and see them more often for sure. And, wrestling is just better as a rule on the East Coast/Midwest. -

I agree on prospect camps, but if its a good one and they want you there it opens tons of doors. I suppose for the East Coast it is less necessary bc things are so close in proximity. However, for kids in a place like AZ it could be the ticket for a lot of these guys. -

Hokie- I think every kid that is looking somewhere or wanting to go somewhere should try to do a prospect camp or go in and train at an RTC to some extent. It his a huge benefit for a kid and there are tons of opportunity out there to do so. It is way easier now than it has been before with all the opportunity I would say. -

Okie State is super packed in that area but seems like they are just loading up guys so who knows really...Hard to say, but I could see either Okie State or ASU happening and not be shocked. -

Could also see Grajeda to ASU as the Bosco pipeline goes hard as the kids say. HS programs where kids are all over have so much more intel and info on programs because kids are in it. If those schools have been in to watch a workout on a visit in previous years I am sure there is more familiarity which helps speed things up. -

Does anyone commit before the official home visit date for this class. That date is 8/4. It is usually 8/1 but there is a dead period during the NWCA Conference so it is a little back this year. No visits can happen pre 8/4 I think, that is kids visiting a campus as well. Seems to me kids would need to be pretty familiar with a campus and staff, IE they did a prospect camp or a training camp there. I would think a kid like Miller may be in a situation like this because of Bassett being on Iowa's campus for training prior. I would think the same thing for Villasenor bc of proximity to campus in Stilly as well or Hayden S because his dad is the coach, obv. Other than that maybe another one of the iowa kids because they have been in around the camp scene at those schools more, IDK spitballing here. -

Valiant has done a lot of the PNL stuff, all of it really which has been great for them. In the fall it is a PNL regional, S32, then the PNL National. They did dual LHP last year and two years ago they went to the St. Christopher's duals in VA as well as had an event with LHP, so that has been good. They had some kids go to College Opens last year which was good for them. Dean wrestled in the Embry Riddle Open, the Doane Open and RTOC College open, placing 3rd, 1st, and 3rd respectively. I think colleges see enough there because so much of HS season matches for really high level kids are so one sided. Valiant also sent a group to Folkstyle Nationals (Barrio, Anderson, Cardinal, Fluckiger) and VA Beach this year (I think like 20 or so kids). The NHSCA group was a really good size group, so yes, you are correct they are doing some more folk. The FS events are kind of open, so it is easier to compete in those. Larkin and Meza met in the RTOC finals a two years ago, both were HS seniors with Larkin winning via major. On the S32 a few years ago Larkin dropped a match to Vince Robinson, so in hindsight probably not as down as thought at the time by many. I am excited to see those Larkin boys compete this year in the lineup at ASU both will be really really good in there. Meza was ranked top 25 ish in December while he used his five events for iowa State. So good to see VCP kids having success in the folk realm as well. They have had a few in the Pittsburgh Classic (Dapper Dan) as well as some in WNO, so some really good events there. Most of the VCP kids drop from ranking for non competition and also they do not see the kids that are ranked during the year so it is goofy and hard to rank them sometimes. Even still with college results it is hard to have anything to weigh them against, that being said I think coaches see what they need, and I agree 100 matches are not needed. Christian Davis true Frosh for Lander took 3rd in NCAA D II this year. Derek Guanajuato had a top 20 win as a true frosh two years ago, so again I think they are definitely having some folk results but I think the FS results overshadow that for sure. Obv, I keep up with them much more than most. -

If Regan was not eligible, how much and when would McCort wrestle him? He is obviously really good and talented and going to be a force in any bracket he is in. However, interesting to see his need to compete versus what the team does with him. Sometimes hard to juggle that for sure. That being said kind of begs the question about kids and competing and what colleges need to see. I am always interested in this because my kid does not have a traditional "season" per say at Valiant College Prep, but still gets in a lot of the major event stuff. Additionally, there are always college opens, especially in PA where there are a ton. Their transfer rules are goofy as Willie noted. -
Love me some Joaquin Chacon from Valiant College Prep!! AZ guys on this list are all very tough, can confirm.

Truzz- Great question, to which I have no answer. I do know that PA transfer rules are notoriously difficult on the parties transferring in to a new school. Not sure if there is additional issue because he is coming from a Private, so in short....I am not sure, but great question. -

Long Island- Also lost girls HC who's son Fry was on the team, you would assume if dad is moving kid is as well. That does not have to be the case, but I would just guess that is the case. Long Island Section XI or Section VIII? -

Regan, did. maybe it is just him. Nobody else confirmed. -
When I watched his interview I thought this was the first time I can remember him saying he wanted to be a coach. He started by saying he wanted to run his own RTC and then went on to say that he would run an RTC at a program where he was the HC. I just cannot remember for the life of me if he had said anything like this before, which I think he has not. With the Taylor hire, you wonder if more schools will be up to spend big money to get a guy like JB. It was interesting the way he framed it when he said he enjoys helping guys reach certain levels more than maybe competing himself. This should make it interesting post NCAA's. Where would he be a fit? It also seemed like he wanted his own RTC or a HC position, from what I gathered.

Truzz- He is gone from his coach role I think, they have hired the long time asst I believe. Also, they lost the girls coach who took the job at King. -

Hokie- I did not really even think of this until I read your post....But National Duals could be a huuuugggeee visit weekend for Okie State. Tulsa is not far from Stilly (we stopped in there and worked out with long time friend Beric Jordan when we went to NCAA's in Tulsa) and it was like an hour away maybe. I do not know how long visits can last etc but I imagine they could bring in some kids for that and that would be huge. I know most visits take place during the fall during fb season due to HS kids being in season during the dual part, but man Okie State could bring in a lot of guys to watch National Duals close up and that could be a thing. I would guess the only drawback is with all the other coaches of top programs being around that could be a way for them to get close to the recruits, but I love it and I am here for all of it. As for Tulsa, I like the city. Like any youth dad I did a tour or two there and I always felt like it was fine. That being said I do not think that is the prevailing notion from most. -

Hokie- Long time Hokie guy? I coached with Zach Niebert for a few years here, was my assistant. Awesome guy and was great for my son and his development and I will forever be indebted to him for that. Not sure if you were around the program when he was at Tech, but it seems like you are close to the program. I sat next to VT at NCAA's one year (Oklahoma City) and their fan base was really good, it was when Dresser was HC and I believe it was the year Dance AA'ed as a Frosh. Either way, good crowd of people who were excited for the program, nice to see VT listed as a school for blue chip kids, I know it was not always that way. It is fun to see the landscape shift over time. -

poorwrestler- Not humble, just realistic and honest. I would normally not throw out any ideas outside my own little circle, but I have a deep interest in C/O 2027 obv because Dean is lumped in there. I have seen a lot of these guys at the age level stuff over the years. Again, no real insight here and I do not know a lot of the families etc so I do not want to pretend to. Kind of isolated here in AZ so we dont run into people the same as on the east coast where you drive five hours and run into a ton of people. Also, I do not travel to many of Dean's events anymore as he is at Valiant Prep and I am a Head Coach of another school here in Mesa, AZ. I am a serial message board reader but do not often delve in much, but as stated C/O 2027 is something I am all in on and I am excited to see where it goes. That being said, I think MN will need to expand outside of MN more than in recent memory. -

poorwrestler- Ehhhh, solid point. I do feel like Minnesota will be I just do not know who goes there from this list. Minnesota I think going to change things up a bit and go for guys outside Minnestoa. Thought Parrow would have went there honestly (who is a really good kid). Picking up Dekraker and Volk was big recently. I like Eggum and staff, seem like really solid guys. I am sure they will be in on some of these guys. Good thing is in the general scheme of things I am nobody and this is by no means the way it is going to go down. -

Truzz- Sonny Amato is super talented and really tough on top. Jersey champ as a Frosh, he is really good there is no doubt there. I think Willie has him in that top 5 for good reason. I wonder where he ends up? I said Rutgers because I mean they gotta keep him there right? IDK, but he is crazy good and I wonder how big he gets. I am not sure how many different staffs recruit the best guys or recruit the best guys at certain projected weights. Again, not sure, but I am sure that Amato is a fantastic get for anyone.
