I had hoped to keep up with this in real time, but tough to do while watching a toddler. Notes on the first 4 matches:
Match starts at 174.
174 Star vs Solis
P1- Lots of shots from Solis but can’t get much traction on anything. Star defending well but not taking any shots of his own, hit for a stall call at the end of the first.
P2- Solis out quick. Same as 1st period, shots from Solis- none are particularly good, but he is pushing the action. Commentator is utterly clueless. He keeps talking about how important the 11 seconds of riding time will be “if the match doesn’t end in a pin”.
P3- Star granbys out in less than a second, score tied at 1-1. More defense from Star and he finally gets banged for a stall point. Star turns it up over the last 30 seconds and comes close to a TD, but Solis managedto keep his leg hooked for no call as the clock runs out.
Solis wins 2-1
184 Key vs Mielnik
P1- Key lands the first TD about a minute in. Announcer still fascinated with riding time. Key dominating from top, Mielnik fighting to avoid a turn.
P2- Riding time still a huge topic of discussion; announcer openly puzzled by the fact that Key differed choice of position. Key working for turns and gets a 1 count on a tilt; Mielnik fighting them off, but eventually draws a stall call. 2-0 Key at the end of the 2nd with riding time locked up (much to the delight of the announcer).
P3- Key on bottom, Meilnick with a nice mat return and almost locks a cradle. Meilnick cuts him with 10 secs left, but unable to get any shots off.
Key wins 3-0
197 Koser vs Smith
P1- Lots of tie ups and both guys pushing for shots, ankle picks, and sweeps. Smith finally lands an ankle pick to duck under for the TD + 2 backs. Good top pressure and big mat return from Smith. Koser out for 1. Smith gets another 2 on a shuck by. 6-1 Smith.
P2- Smith kicks out for a quick 1. Very nice shot by Koser, but unable to finish. Good low single by Smith for 2.
P3- Smith riding well with heavy pressure, Koser unable to get much moving until a nice roll for 1. Smith looking for picks and shucks, but Koser defending to end it.
Smith wins 10-2.
285 Griess vs Smith
P1- Smith moving well for a big man; hardly surprising for a guy who started at 174 and is now in his 8th (!) season with the Terps. Single by Smith for 2. Smith looking for tilts but not getting very close. Griess staying off his belly but not doing much else. Smith getting a tad careless and lets Griess go for 1.
P2- Griess starts down and immediately hooks a leg and leverages around for the reversal; he almost gets backs. Smith belly down and Griess pushing for bars (a “hammerlock”, according to the announcer) and turns. Griess aggressive and far out to the side and Smith reverses for possible backs (MD challenge). Announcers discussing riding time during the challenge. No backs on the challenge, Smith in control with 5 secs left in the 2nd; Griess out for 1 with 2 seconds left in the period. 4-4
P3- 30 secs in Smith gets the 1. Smith stuffed on a double attempt and Griess almost locks a cradle; Smith gets himself out of back danger but gives up the 2. Smith tried to roll out with 10 secs left but unable to escape.
Griess wins 6-5
