Sounds crazy! Just read up on him on Wikipedia. 5th at Sr Worlds and lost a match to a T. Uulu. Then he won U23 worlds and beat O. Uulu. Wonder if those guys are brothers, both are from Kyrgyzstan? I can imagine OSU feels pretty good with Spratley at 125, are they planning on plugging Forrest in at 133? Ronnie Ramirez has looked pretty good at 133 so far, in my opinion.

Sounds like BS. What's amazing is I've lived 60+ years and have only met a couple "trans" people (only 1 when I lived in Los Angeles), but the rightwing sees them everywhere. Every massacre nowadays the wingers put the blame on trannies, instead of the gun nuts they inevitably turn out to be, and usually of the rightwing variety as well. "Libs of TikTok" is a strong hint it's propaganda.

Understandable. For the academic year, 1986, Brands won the state title. But the state title for 1986 wasn't decided until the Iowa state tournament in, if I'm guessing correctly, March 1987 (or maybe February). If you read the document you see that part of it is related to Brands seeking to be able to wrestle at the state tournament.

I watch the kids wrestling HWT today and think to myself "I'd do really well against most of those kids" (let's face it, most HWTs suck)...then the rest of my thought "for about a minute or so, then it's welcome to Gasville". Maybe Heartattack Boulevard.

FS and Folk are different sports. We both have seen guys who excelled at FS but who never really did jack at Folk, and vice-versa. Carter Young is a classic example, beat Gross in FS, but has never even made R12 at NCAAs. Not only that but the maxim is that freshman struggle on bottom. That's not always true, but a lot of the time it is. So a FS kid in his first year of Folk could seriously struggle on bottom. Theoretically it's an easy fix if the guy you are teaching is smart and adaptive. Standups nearly always work if you are fast enough, for example, and Ono is pretty damned quick, as I recall. I agree that Ono would likely place at 133, but I'm not sold on his mat work, at least not until I see him go under a good rider. I've seen too many FS guys get pulled apart like wishbones in folk competition to automatically assume they'd do as well in folk as FS.

How do you feel about Ono's chances at 133? Isn't 133 his actual weight?

If MSU is upgrading their facilities I can't help but think they will be trying to upgrade the wrestling program as well.

Ah, fireman's carry. You don't see that much anymore, eh? I think I saw one last weekend, but I was watching a match from the 90s. Beautiful move, if you hit it perfect you can put the guy right on his back. Or you in the ER, which is almost as good (presumably). I'm glad the 3 piece uniform was gone by the time I started wrestling Oh yeah, I think MPhillips reference to "purgatory" was related to the movie "Support Your Local Sheriff", which was set in a mining town called Purgatory (state undefined though, I think). I'm surprised you didn't get the reference, looks like a good date movie from the late 60s!

I'm 60, and I've seen wrestling change immensely. The basics remain unchanging, but the styles change forever. Scrambling today for example. Nobody would flip under and grab a leg back in the 80s if he was about to be taken down! Today there are kids that if you get in deep on only one of their legs, you are in big trouble! You'd better get both legs, or none! Back when I wrestled we had 25-30 match long seasons, give or take, until state. If a guy wrestled 140 matches in HS it was considered a lot. Today these kids wrestle the academic schedule PLUS a busy offseason schedule that can include dozens of matches. A HS kid today can easily wrestle 300 matches in 4 years. These kids today are MORE EXPERIENCED WRESTLERS than 80s wrestlers were. Plus they have access to wrestling coaching online. It's really not a fair comparison, technique wise.

The quality of the video is surprisingly good. There are a lot of videos from the 80s that look horrible, but the ones off IPBS look very good, like 80s era sitcom level (not home video quality level like many of the old wrestling videos). Jesus, those cheerleaders look like women you'd meet at a bar at the age of 35. I'm pretty sure the one in the middle is Kathy Griffin.

The music they played at Hawkeye matches was super, duper lame. The theme from the "Andy Griffith Show", for example.

I've been watching a lot of old Hawkeye videos of duals(Gable era), mostly against OSU and ISU. Awesome stuff by Iowa PBS, and others. Did you guys know that Jim Heffernan never beat an ISU wrestler? Crazy, right? His brother John worked his way to being All American, too. Anyway, I've noticed consistent home cooking by the Iowa referees, not that the Hawkeyes actually needed it. I've seen lots of dudes I knew back in the day in those videos! Wrestling was way different back then. Lots of collar ties. Lots of riding ankles. I'll post one of the videos here.
