After Simpson College won by fall to begin the dual, the Buena Vista wrestling team then won four of the next five weight classes to build a 17-10 lead and hung on in the end to top the Storm, 24-19, in an Iowa Conference thriller inside of Siebens Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. The dual began at 197 pounds, and the Storm took the early lead before Gable Bonner won an exciting 4-3 decision at 285 pounds. Bonner trailed 1-0 heading to the third before quickly tying things up at 1-1 just 20 seconds into the final period. That's the way things stood at the end of regulation and after the first overtime period. Bonner then took a 2-1 lead with an escape with less than five seconds left in the first sudden death before Simpson tied things up at 2-2. Bonner then got a thrilling takedown with under 10 seconds left before letting his opponent go with just a second left for the final score. Senior Branden Schultz put the Beavers in front, 9-6, as he won by forfeit at 125 pounds before Slade Stiles made it a 13-6 advantage with his 21-10 triumph at 133. Jeff Sand picked up a penalty point with just 10 seconds left to go with riding time to win an 11-3 major decision for the Storm at 141 pounds over Cam Mennenoh. Junior Steve Gutschenritter improved to 10-4 on the year with his commanding 11-1 major decision at 149 pounds to push the Beaver lead up to 17-10. Simpson pulled back within a point at 17-16 when Jacob Mize won by pin over Drake Swedlund at 157 pounds. Seth Shatto kept BVU in the lead as he picked up two takedowns and a reversal over the final five minutes of his 165-pound match to go on and win 11-1 for his 20th win of the year. Brett Roberts held off Tyler Puls in a hard-fought match at 174 pounds to keep Simpson within striking distance at 21-19 heading into the final bout of the night. Senior Casey Paprocki, who hasn't seen any action over the last few weeks, was back out on the mat for the Beavers at 184 pounds. He took a 1-0 lead early in the second period with an escape 30 seconds in and kept that lead heading to the third. He was able to pick up a pair of nearfall points midway through the period for a 3-0 lead before surrendering a reversal seconds which made it a 3-2 score. Paprocki was then let loose to make it a 4-2 score with a minute left before being taken down to even things up at 4-4. He was able to get away with 30 seconds to go, and held on for the final 15 seconds in a scramble situation to earn the 5-4 win and give the Beavers the five-point victory. It's the third straight win over the Storm for BVU, and each win came down to the final match. Buena Vista improves to 1-4 overall (1-2 IIAC) and will look to add to that conference win total win it hosts three other teams in half of the IIAC Duals this Saturday inside of the Lamberti Rec Center. The Beavers will begin their day against #28 Dubuque at 9:00am before taking on top-ranked Wartburg College at 10:30am. The day concludes with a dual against Central College at 12:00pm.

With the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday now past, the scholastic wrestling regular season is more or less hitting its home stretch. However, as was the case this past weekend, there is a lot of connected activity involving Fab 50 teams in the coming week. Broncos traveled to Marmion, came away with win, continue with gauntlet by hosting Marist Looking at the schedule for Montini Catholic, Ill., at the start of the season, one could see this midseason seven week gauntlet and call it a lot of things -- including sadistic. The last week of that stretch is finally in sight. The penultimate week came to roost this past Saturday, as the No. 20 ranked Broncos beat No. 30 Marmion Academy, Ill. 36-28 in dual meet action. The first four matches of this dual meet were forfeits. Montini Catholic earned three of them as Edgar Ruano (220), No. 10 Michael Johnson, Jr. (285), and Jimmy Pawleski (106) got their hands raised for showing up; then it was Marmion Academy's turn with No. 16 Anthony Bosco (113) cutting the deficit to 18-6. After those four non-matches, the host Cadets won three consecutive weights to tie the dual meet at 18-all. A.J. Jaffe picked up an 8-2 decision over Kegan Calkins at 120, No. 13 Johnny Jimenez upended Dylan Duncan 7-2 at 126, and Anthony Cheloni scored a fall in 2:43 over Caleb Fortuna at 138. In response, Montini Catholic picked up consecutive wins from middle-weight anchors Vince Turk (138) and No. 20 Chris Garcia (145), which gave them a 25-18 lead that would hold up through the rest of the dual meet. Trace Carello would cut into that deficit slightly for the Cadets with a 21-4 technical fall at 152 pounds; however, another pair of consecutive wins for Montini Catholic would open the lead up to 33-23 with two matches left in the dual. Those wins came from Lucas Fortuna and No. 13 Xavier Montalvo who bumped up one weight class each. The host Cadets would flip their wrestlers for the last two weights in hopes of stealing the dual meet. Josh Myers did his part with a 20-5 technical fall at 182 pounds, which kept the dual in reach for Marmion Academy. However, Anthony Ferraro gave the Broncos the match-sealing victory at 195 pounds by 5-1 decision over Nathan Traxler. Now on Friday night, it will be the capper to the gauntlet, as Montini Catholic will host No. 13 Marist in dual meet action starting at 7 p.m. Central. There will be a live web stream/broadcast of the dual meet on the Illinois Matmen website. Projected lineups are below. 106: Jimmy Pawleski (Mon) vs. Jim McAuliffe (Mar) 113: TBD vs. Nick Lukanich (Mar) 120: Kegan Calkins (Mon) vs. Mark Duda/Andy O'Brien (Mar) 126: Dylan Duncan (Mon) vs. Mike Mullaney/Mark Duda (Mar) 132: Caleb Fortuna (Mon) vs. Ameen Hamdan (Mar) 138: Vince Turk (Mon) vs. Mario Leveille (Mar) 145: No. 20 Chris Garcia (Mon) vs. David Kasper/Nick Gasbarro (Mar) 152: Luke Fortuna (Mon) vs. Jakada Hull (Mar) 160: No. 13 Xavier Montalvo (Mon) vs. Peter Andreotti (Mar) 170: TBD vs. Jake Poole (Mar) 182: Mitch Navarro (Mon) vs. Alex Benoit (Mar) 195: Anthony Ferraro (Mon) vs. Sam Feldner (Mar) 220: Edgar Ruano (Mon) vs. Pat O'Connor (Mar) 285: No. 10 Michael Johnson, Jr. (Mon) vs. Jake Ford (Mar) Marmion Academy travels to Michigan for two dual meets against Fab 50 opposition Like Montini Catholic in the previous piece, the No. 30 ranked Cadets is ending their own seven-week gauntlet of rigorous competitions this weekend. They'll be traveling to Michigan for tri-meets on Friday and Saturday. On each day, they'll face on Fab 50 team -- on Friday, it'll be No. 15 Lowell (Mich.), while on Saturday they compete against No. 18 Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.). Also, on Saturday, they'll match up against Cincinnati Moeller (Ohio). For Cincinnati Moeller, which started inside the top 15 in the preseason, these last two weeks have kind of been the start to their season. The Crusaders are getting back their upper-weight core to the lineup, at least to some extent. Here are projected lineups for Lowell, Marmion Academy, Detroit Catholic Central, and Cincinnati Moeller for this weekend; the "old weights" are used in Michigan competition. 103: Sam Russell (Low), TBD (Marm), Davis Rastigue/Trevor Geelhood (DCC), Connor Graves (Moe) 112: Lucas Hall (Low), No. 16 Anthony Bosco (Marm), Tommy Herrmann (DCC), Jalen Summerours (Moe) 119: Zeth Dean (Low), A.J. This afternoon starting at 1:30 p.m., No. 15 Lowell will host No. 18 Detroit Catholic Central in an assembly match. Projected lineups for each squad are featured in the item above. Then on Friday, No. 28 Davison and No. 36 St. Johns will compete in a dual meet before the University of Michigan's home match against Michigan State at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor. Projected lineups for each team are below. 103: Jacob Alvarez (D) vs. Emilio Sanchez (SJ) 112: Max Johnson (D) vs. Ian Parker (SJ) 119: Jacob Madrigal (D) vs. Lucas McFarland (SJ) 125: Lincoln Olson (D) vs. Derek Droste (SJ) 130: Derek Humphrey (D) vs. Bret Fedewa (SJ) 135: Matt Miller (D) vs. Jacob Zelenka (SJ) 140: No. 13 at 138 Justin Oliver (D) vs. No. 3 at 138 Zac Hall/Mark Bozzo (SJ) 145: Dominic Russ (D) vs. Hall/Bozzo (SJ) 152: Brenan McRill (D) vs. No. 5 Logan Massa (SJ) 160: Thomas Garty (D) vs. Drew Wixson (SJ) 171: Mark Lange (D) vs. TBD (SJ) 189: No. 15 at 182 Jordan Cooks (D) vs. No. 11 Angus Arthur (SJ) 215: Jake Ellis (D) vs. Tyler Wildmo (SJ) 285: Dakota Powers (D) vs. Nic Sturgis/Jake Gnegy (SJ) Wyoming Seminary with a statement victory over Bergen Catholic This past Friday night at the University of Pennsylvania, No. 6 Wyoming Seminary (Pa.) laid a statement on No. 8 Bergen Catholic (N.J.) in the form of a 39-19 victory. It was a second very decisive dual meet win for the Blue Knights over a team ranked in the top ten this season. The opening four matches of the dual meet set the tone, and were in essence the margin at the end of the match. Danny Boychuck opened the proceedings with a 19 second pin over Bergen Catholic backup Connor Laspina at 138 pounds. Tyler Ponte extended the lead for Wyoming Seminary with a 6-4 decision over Zach Spira. No. 10 Nick Reenan continued the barrage, earning an injury default at the 1:30 mark against Joe Grello at 152, while the stretch of dominance ended with a 14-1 major decision victory for No. 18 Chris Weiler over Jordan Pagan at 160. Bergen Catholic would cut into the lead with Kevin Mulligan's 5-3 decision victory over Ryan McMullan at 170 pounds and a pin in 3:38 by Danny DeLorenzi against Greg Kleinsmith at 182. However, it was still a 19-9 deficit for the Crusaders, who did not wrestle No. 2 Johnny Sebastian in this dual meet, either at 182 or up at 195. Seeing the lead cut down to ten, Wyoming Seminary would go on another four bout winning streak to put the dual meet out of reach. At 195 pounds, it was Mike Rogers with a 7-1 decision over Connor O'Brien. Matthew Doggett continued to sap out the hopes of the Crusaders, this one was a 7-6 victory over Christian Jenco at 220. Then, it was Jake Scanlan scoring a pin in 3:52 over Joe Caggiano at 285. Finally, John Busiello earned a 16-0 technical fall in four minutes over Evan Quinn at 106. Bergen Catholic would win three of the evening's last four bouts, but the damage was done during the first ten matches of the dual meet. Those wins came from No. 2 Nick Suriano at 113 pounds, an 11-3 major decision over Trent Olson; Pete Lipari with a 2-0 decision over Will Verallis at 126; and a 5-4 victory for J.P. Ascolese over C.J. Moyer at 132. The disruption came in the form of Jimmy Overheiser scoring a 3-2 victory over the Crusaders' Tyler Casamenti at 120. Each team will see another nationally ranked opponent this coming Saturday in dual meet action. The Blue Knights make a trip to Maryland for the Gilman Duals, where they will most likely face No. 50 McDonogh, Md. Bergen Catholic will wrestle No. 21 Bound Brook, N.J. as part of a quad meet at High Point -- Raritan is the fourth team in that event. It's a total muddle behind Bergen Catholic in the Garden State Among schools that compete in the NJSIAA, No. 1 Blair Academy does not (they feed into National Preps), there is much confusion about who is second best behind Bergen Catholic this season. The happenings of the past week validate such an assertion. On Saturday, Bound Brook traveled to Don Bosco Prep. They earned a 36-19 victory, taking home victories in ten of fourteen weight classes. However, the defeated Ironmen were without one starter and lost five of six matches decided by two points or less. Full details of that dual meet are available here. On Monday, Don Bosco Prep traveled to St. Peter's Prep and bounced back with a 30-27 victory. It was a meet in which both teams won seven of the weight classes. Full details of that dual meet are available here. Also on Monday, Bound Brook went to unranked Delbarton, and was trailing 20-12 after eight weight classes. However, it was consecutive victories from their back four weight classes -- including three pins -- that assured a Crusaders victory. The final score was 33-29, with the two teams splitting the fourteen weight class. For full details, click here. Adding to that confusion is results from earlier in the season. St. Peter's Prep beat a short-handed Bound Brook squad 35-28 at the Clash, though the teams split the fourteen weight classes. In addition, St. Peter's Prep split the fourteen weight classes during last weekend's 32-29 victory over Delabrton. Sorting it all out, Bound Brook and St. Peter's Prep will switch places in this week's Fab 50 -- Bound Brook to No. 21 and St. Peter's Prep to No. 25 -- while Don Bosco Prep stays at No. 23. Golden State update Two major tournaments took place this past weekend in California. No. 32 Poway used mass volume in winning the championship at the Battle for the Belt hosted by Temecula Valley this past weekend. Despite no champions, the Titans placed ten individuals on the way to a 199.5 to 190 victory over No. 46 Vacaville. Leading the Poway effort were runner-up finishes from Sergio Enloe (138) and No. 14 Ralphy Tovar (145). Vacaville had two wrestlers win weight class titles. Gionn Peralta made his debut at 113, came up with a title, and jumps into the rankings at No. 14; and No. 4 Jeramy Sweany (220) continued his dominance this season with pins in all six of his matches. The Bulldogs placed six wrestlers in all. Other notable weight class champions were Evan Wick (San Marino), who upset the previous ranked Sean Cannon (Green Valley, Nev.) 4-3 at 120; No. 9 Nikko Villarreal (Gilroy), a 4-2 winner over Ralphy Tovar at 145; No. 15 Paul Fox (Gilroy) at 152; and No. 5 Nick Fiegener (Folsom), who beat No. 6 Corey Griego (Sultana) 3-2 in the 182 final. No. 33 Buchanan was the dominant champion at the Five Counties Invitational this past weekend hosted by Fountain Valley. The Bears were led by four weight class champions: Jason Delacruz (120), Conner Francis (145), Abner Romero (152), and Kai Dill (220). In all nine wrestlers placed. Finishing second in the tournament was Santiago Corona with 211 points, led by three weight class champions -- Chris Lacayo (106), No. 4 Michael Longo (138), and Freddie Garcia (160). Two additional nationally ranked wrestlers won weight class titles: No. 9 Mason Pengilly (Porterville) at 126 and Nour Abdullatif (Roosevelt) at 285. On Wednesday evening, it will be a battle of Fab 50 squads when No. 35 Clovis West travels to No. 33 Buchanan. Then on Saturday at 4 p.m. Pacific Time, Buchanan and No. 4 Clovis will travel to No. 46 Vacaville as part of a double-dual. Buchanan and Clovis will both dual Vacaville and James Logan, but will not dual each other. Here are projected lineups for Clovis West, Buchanan, Clovis, and Vacaville. 106: Chris Marin (CW), Ross Arve (B), No. 5 Justin Mejia (C), Jordan Aquino (V) 113: Bryce Morita (CW), Jake Levatino/Durbin Lloren (B), Tristan Gilliland (C), No. 14 Gionn Peralta (V) 120: Isack Espina (CW), Jason Delacruz (B), Julian Gaytan (C), Anthony Hernandez (V) 126: No. 16 Michael Knoblauch (CW), Greg Gaxiola (B), Khristian Olivas (C), Bobby Ehman (V) 132: Bobby Miguel (CW), Kyle Hansen (B), Isaiah Hokit (C), Kyle Moore (V) 138: Chris Lane (CW), Dean Esquibel (B), Lane Barnes (C), Eric Udall (V) 145: Chris Garcia (CW), Conner Francis (B), Jared Hill (C), Hayden Fry (V) 152: Tyler Zimmer (CW), Abner Romero (B), Dominic Kincaid (C), Quintin Cardoza (V) 160: Luke Lierly (CW), Isaiah Jones (B), Josh Hokit (C), Jesse Johnson (V) 170: Eric Glikbarg (CW), Esequiel Olivera (B), Brody Brand (C), Cole Tigert (V) 182: George Espana (CW), Young Woo An (B), A.J. Nevills (C), Zach Myers/James Probis (V) 195: Alex Ku (CW), Zekary Levatino (B), Adam Prentice (C), Steven Gomez (V) 220: Cortes Morales (CW), Kai Dill (B), Matt Weiss (C), No. 4 Jeramy Sweany (V) 285: Austin Cox (CW), David Robles (B), No. 1 Nick Nevills (C), Mike McCauley (V) Broken Arrow and Stillwater in tight battle for Sooner State supremacy This past weekend the top three teams in Oklahoma, all of which are ranked in the top 15 nationally, competed in the Bobby Lyons Invitational hosted by Sand Springs. The team race was razor tight, and came down to the last weight class of the evening. Trailing by 1.5 points with the championship and consolation finals at 285 pounds to go, Broken Arrow got a 2-1 overtime victory from Trenton Lieurance in the third place bout. That gave the Tigers the championship when No. 15 Andrew Dixon (Edmond North) pinned Stillwater's James Brower in the championship bout. Despite going 1-6 in first place matches, Broken Arrow scored the 234 to 233.5 victory over Stillwater, which went 5-2 in those matches. The lone champion for Broken Arrow was No. 11 Markus Simmons, who scored a 12-2 major decision over John Jimanez (Sand Springs) at 120 pounds. Runner-up finishes came from Damon Hail (113), Davion Jeffries (126), Zack Edwards (132), Shea Conley (138), Tanner Bailey (145), and Paden Bailey (152). Six additional Tigers wrestlers earned a placement finish to make it thirteen in all for Broken Arrow. Weight class champions for runner-up Stillwater included Andrew Nieman (106), No. 13 Kaid Brock (132), Tristan Moran (138), No. 5 Joe Smith (145), and No. 5 Chandler Rogers (170). Nieman made his season debut at 106, earned a victory over No. 14 Paxton Rosen (Edmond North), which puts him in the rankings this week at No. 13. Brock, Moran, and Smith scored victories over Broken Arrow opposition. Runner-up finishers for the Pioneers were Jordan Dieringer (182) and Brower. Additional wrestlers placed third, fifth, and sixth for Stillwater. Finishing third in the event was Edmond North, who despite having four weight class champions only could muster 207.5 points. Those four weight class champions were No. 10 Joel Dixon (182), No. 5 Derek White (195), No. 12 Lance Dixon (220), and No. 15 Andrew Dixon (285). Rounding out the weight class champions were No. 3 Daton Fix (Sand Springs) at 113 pounds; Cody Karstetter (Sand Springs), who beat Jeffries 3-2 in the 126 final to knock him out of the weight class rankings; Jonce Blaylock (Berryhill) at 152; and Jacobe Smith (Muskogee) at 160. This coming Tuesday, No. 12 Stillwater will travel to No. 11 Broken Arrow for a dual meet. Edmond North dropped three spots to No. 14 in the Fab 50 this week, and will travel to Yukon for the Jay Hancock Memorial, a tournament that also includes No. 49 Collinsville. Bettendorf competes against top Iowa rivals in past and present weekends For a second tournament this season, it was No. 22 Bettendorf (Iowa) finishing slightly ahead of No. 37 Waverly-Shell Rock (Iowa) to secure a tournament victory. The first time came in the opening weekend at the Keith Young Invitational. This past weekend, it was at the Geneseo Wrestling Invitational in Illinois. Both the Bulldogs and Go-Hawks placed nine wrestlers in the top six podium spots, but it was Bettendorf's five champions out-pointing the eight top three finishers for Waverly-Shell Rock. Winning weight class titles for Bettendorf were Jack Wagner (106), Jacob Schwarm (113), Paul Glynn (120), No. 4 Fredy Stroker (132), and No. 10 Logan Ryan (138). Jacob Woodard (145) finished in second place, while an additional Bulldogs wrestler placed fifth and two others were sixth. Waverly-Shell Rock had Bryce Steiert (145) and Spencer Derifield (160) pick up weight class titles. Nate Sands (120), Izaak Miller (182), and Thomas Foy (195) placed second; while Justin Reither (132), Corey Abernathy (170), and Kaleb Staack (285) placed third. This coming weekend, Bettendorf will be joined by No. 27 Southeast Polk in the field at the Ed Winger Invite hosted by Urbandale, Iowa. Sixteen teams will compete in the individual bracket tournament on Saturday. Bettendorf won eight weight classes in a 37-27 dual meet victory against Southeast Polk at Iowa State a week ago from this past Sunday. Additional ranked teams from The Predicament polls in the field include North Scott and Iowa City West. Quick hitters Blair Academy, N.J., yet again showed why they are the number one team in the country. This past weekend in the Escape the Rock Tournament held outside of Philadelphia, the Buccaneers placed 13 wrestlers (every weight class but for 160, where No. 3 Dylan Milonas is out injured), and won four titles. Champions included No. 12 Chaz Tucker (120), who beat three nationally ranked wrestlers on the weekend, No. 1 Joey McKenna (138), No. 9 Mason Manville (152), and No. 15 Brandon Dallavia. Finishing in second place with four champions and 197.5 points, but 80 back of Blair Academy, was No. 16 Bethlehem Catholic, Pa. The Hawks were led by weight class champions Jake Riegel (106), No. 19 Luke Karam (113), No. 3 Zeke Moisey (126), and Andrew Dunn (220). For full results, click here. This coming week, top-ranked Blair Academy hosts a pair of Fab 50 teams as part of a Super Quad at 12:30 p.m. The Buccaneers will wrestle all four teams in the following order: No. 23 Don Bosco Prep (N.J.), Tulsa Union (Okla.), Smyrna (Del.), and No. 26 St. Edward (Ohio). On the opposite mat, the following dual meets will take place: St. Edward vs. Smyrna, St. Edward vs. Don Bosco, St. Edward vs. Tulsa Union, and Don Bosco Prep vs. Tulsa Union. The two matches for St. Edward on Saturday against Fab 50 opposition mark a fourth consecutive Saturday in which the Eagles have taken on a Fab 50 opponent in dual meet competition. This past weekend they hosted No. 5 St. Paris Graham, Ohio in their annual match. The visiting Falcons came away with a 34-25 victory, as they won eight of the fourteen weight classes. However, St. Edward won the only match involving a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers, as No. 11 L.J. Bentley upended No. 17 Eli Stickley by a 2-1 score at 113 pounds. In the WPIAL, which is the regional governing body for schools around Pittsburgh, sub-section championship dual meets will be taking place tonight. Most notable among those is the sub-section 1 tournament in Class AAA (big-school) to be held at No. 41 Greater Latrobe starting at 6 p.m. The host Wildcats are the second seed and will dual Kiski Area in one semifinal, while No. 9 Franklin Regional takes on Hempfield Area. The two winners and losers will meet to determine placement positions for next week's WPIAL team championship tournament. No. 42 Kuna and No. 45 Centennial, the top two teams in the state of Idaho, will both be at the Red Halverson Memorial Wrestling Invitational this weekend in Minico. This past weekend, Kuna dominated their way to a title at the Tiger-Grizz Invitational; while Centennial was short a key starter, who placed at the Reno TOC in December, and was in fourth place behind No. 38 Pleasant Grove (Utah) and two others at The Rumble in Orem, Utah. No. 4 Clovis (Calif.) outlasted No. 8 Massillon Perry (Ohio) in a relatively tight point race at the Alliance Top Gun Wrestling Tournament this past weekend. A recap of the event was written and posted on InterMat Sunday morning. To read the article, click here.

OREGON CITY, Ore. -- The Clackamas wrestling team used a quick start and huge bonus point wins at the first three weight classes to improve to 9-3 on the year. The first three bouts were huge for the Cougars to get a very excited Randall Hall crowd ready for an exciting evening in a big way. Stevan Knoblauch, CJ Palmer and Robbie Rizzolino each earned bonus point wins to help the team jump out to a 17-0 lead. The night included some huge wins by Clackamas and none bigger than that of David Douglas High School standout Ihoughama Odihizuwa as he took down the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the nation with a convincing 8-4 win. Also, getting the folks fired up was Eleazar DeLuca's handling of No. 3 Nico Moreno. "I am incredibly proud of all of our kids from the red shirts through starters as they have worked very hard to get to where they are at right now and to avenge each of the early December losses was huge," said Clackamas coach Josh Rhoden. "We told our guys that now we can either let everyone catch us or we can widen the gap. Our hope is that these guys continue to respond like they have all year and continue to make gains." The 23rd-ranked Chattanooga wrestling team scored a dominating 35-6 win at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in Southern Conference action today. The Mocs improved to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in league matches while the Cougars dropped to 3-10 and 1-1 in SoCon matches. For the Mocs, it was their fourth straight dual win, improving to 6-5 all-time against SIUE. UTC has won 10 consecutive SoCon matches and are 24-1 in league duals under fifth-year head coach Heath Eslinger. “We wrestled well today,” stated Eslinger. “It was a good effort and we are wrestling consistently each time out. We just need to continue to improve with each week.” SIUE opened with a 3-0 after Dakota Leach scored a 9-6 win against freshman Byron Smith at 125. That advantage was short lived, as the Mocs ran off eight straight-wins, starting with back-to-back major decisions. Junior Nick Soto posted a 15-2 victory over Patrick Meyers at 133 while freshman Michael Pongracz shut out Drew Vrbenec 8-0 at 141. Wins by sophomore Austin Sams and senior Alex Hudson at 149 and 157, respectively, pushed the Mocs lead to 15-3 before UTC really turned up the heat. Junior Corey Mock posted a technical fall against Matthew Lester at 165 before junior Levi Clemons and sophomore John Lampe scored consecutive pins at 174 and 184. Freshman Scottie Boykin closed out the Mocs scoring with a 12-6 decision over Chris Johnson at 197. SIUE got three more points when heavyweight David Devine scored a 7-5 win in overtime against freshman Dawson Peck. It was the first loss for Peck in six matches since transferring to UTC from Virginia Tech at the semester break. UTC gets right back on the road this week, traveling to The Citadel (3-2, 1-0 SoCon) for a Wednesday match at 7:00 p.m. (E.S.T.). KENT, Ohio -- Despite having two starters out of its lineup Sunday, Kent State (8-6) captured 6-of-10 matches in a 23-14 win over NC State (10-3) at the M.A.C. Center. Right next to the wrestling mat, Kent State's gymnastics team also defeated the Wolfpack during the special Beauty and the Beast event. "When we found out at weigh-ins that Caleb (Marsh) wasn't going to be able to go, I was worried," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "I thought it would be hard for us to win, but we had a lot of guys step up and I'm proud of our guys for the way they came through." Prior to Sunday, the Golden Flashes were just 4-9 at the 165-pound weight class in dual meets and 1-12 at 125 pounds, but sophomores Tyler Buckwalter and Del Vinas each came up with big victories. The afternoon started at 165, as Buckwalter earned a 9-1 win over Peter Santos. In just his fourth victory of the season, Buckwalter scored a takedown with 10 seconds left in the match to clinch the major decision. He set the tone in the first period with a takedown immediately followed by a three-point turn. "Tyler's a better dual meet wrestler than a tournament wrestler at this point," Andrassy said. "Our hope is that he just continues to progress." The Wolfpack answered with a major decision of their own at 174, before sophomore Sam Wheeler gave the Flashes the lead for good with a 9-5 decision over Mike Macchiavello. Wheeler recorded two first period takedowns and never trailed. Sophomore Cole Baxter followed with an 8-3 decision over KaRonne Jones that included four minutes of riding time. "Our young guys are getting better and better every match," Andrassy said. "The improvement isn't always as fast as we'd like to be as coaches, but it's come against very good competition this year." Vinas claimed his first career dual victory with a 5-3 decision over Micah Perez. Vinas scored a pair of first period takedowns from his own shots and escaped in the third. "It was only our second win at 125 in dual this year," Andrassy said. "We can win a lot of duals if we win there." Sophomore Mack McGuire brought the crowd to its feet with a first period pin of Chris Wilkes. With the match scoreless late in the first, McGuire got in deep on a shot and had not yet earned a takedown, but tilted Wilkes' legs high enough to put him flat on his back. With his team up 19-11, sophomore Michael DePalma sealed the victory with a 12-2 major decision of Brian Hamann. Up 2-0 after one period, DePalma broke things open in the second with a reversal and two takedowns. The Golden Flashes begin a string of five straight conference duals Friday, Jan. 24, visiting Ohio. Already 2-0 in the MAC, Kent State hosts Central Michigan Sunday, Jan. 26 at the M.A.C. Center. Ian Miller and Caleb Marsh are both expected back in the lineup Friday. Results: 165 Tyler Buckwalter (KSU) won by major decision over Peter Santos (NCSU) 9-1. 174 Pete Renda (NCSU) won by major decision over Mike Vollant (KSU) 14-3. 184 Sam Wheeler (KSU) won by decision over Michael Macchiavello (NCSU) 9-5. 197 Cole Baxter (KSU) won by decision over KaRonne Jones (NCSU) 8-3. 285 Nick Gwiazdowski (NCSU) won by major decision over Mimmo Lytle (KSU) 10-1. 125 Edilberto Vinas (KSU) won by decision over Micah Perez (NCSU) 5-3. 133 Mackenzie McGuire (KSU) won by pin over Chris Wilkes (NCSU) 2:43. 141 Sam Speno (NCSU) won by decision over Tyler Small (KSU) 3-2. 149 Michael Depalma (KSU) won by major decision over Brian Hamann (NCSU) 12-2. 157 Thomas Gantt (NCSU) won by decision over T.J. NORMAN, Okla. -- It was like déjà vu for the UNI wrestling team when they knocked off undefeated No. 4 Oklahoma, 19-17. Just as it did last season in the West Gym at UNI, the team win came down to the final match of the dual. UNI didn’t come out with the victory in heavyweight, but they had built a lead that Oklahoma was unable to overcome. UNI got out front 12-0 and Dylan Peters and Joey Lazor beat two highly ranked opponents before the Sooners could get on the board. UNI improves to 6-0 in duals. The Panthers are ranked second to Missouri in the Mid-American Conference. MATCH BY MATCH Redshirt freshman Peters got UNI off to a strong start by knocking of No. 5 Jarrod Patterson in the 125-pound match. No. 7 Peters earned a reversal off injury time and earned riding time to win 4-1. Joe Colon defended his top ranking in the 133-pound weight class and stayed perfect (6-0) in duals with a 7-5 win over No. 8 Cody Brewer. Just when it looked as if the Panthers would lose its first match of the day, No. 15 Joey Lazor flipped off his back to pin No. 10 Nick Lester in 2 minutes, 6 seconds. The Sooners’ Kendric Maple stopped the Panthers’ run. Tyler Patten couldn’t hold off No. 3 Maple in the final seconds, and Maple went on to get the final points needed for a major decision win, 10-1. An early takedown put Jarrett Jensen in the lead at 157 pounds, and he continued to dominate until the third period. A series of takedowns by No. 19 Justin DeAngelis tied up the score, where a takedown in overtime sealed the 17-15 win for the Sooners. At 165 pounds, Clark Glass held off No. 11 Cooper Moore early, but Moore took the match 6-2 to break the Sooners’ streak. Andrew Howe proved why he was ranked first in the nation at 174 pounds with a 22-8 major decision win over No. 16 Cody Caldwell of UNI. No. 5 Ryan Loder returned to the dual lineup to defend his perfect dual record and earn his second major decision of the season. He kept Danny Chaid scoreless, winning 13-0. UNI led 19-11 with the final two matches to go. Basil Minto refused to give up bonus points to No. 3 Travis Rutt, keeping the Panthers in the lead. However, Rutt would go on to win the 198-pound match, 6-3. It was up to Blaize Cabell to keep the Panthers in the lead. He kept the score close, but lost 5-4 to No. 18 Ross Larson. CAT STATS Four Panthers in today’s lineup remain undefeated in duals: Peters, Colon, Lazor, Loder. Peters is two falls away from making the list of top 10 Panthers with most falls in a single season. He has 13 pins total, with eight of them coming against a Division I opponents. Those eight falls put him sixth in the nation for most wins by fall. Colon is the Panthers’ first top-ranked wrestler since Dylan Long in 2003. Long went on to finish second at the Division I national championships in the 141-pound weight class. Colon is second in the nation for the most wins by technical fall. Colon hasn’t lost a dual since joining the Panthers in the 2011-12 season. His .952 winning percentage makes him third on the all-time list of highest winning percentages for a single season. Lazor has the second most career wins on the team. His win today was No. 75. Loder leads the team with 103. Loder has not lost a dual since the 2011-12 season. He has the fifth-highest career winning percentage (.817) of all Panthers with at least 50 wins. Prior to this season, UNI had not been ranked in the top 10 since 2003. NEXT UP The Panthers return home to host the conference favorite, Missouri. The dual is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 24. The 12th-ranked Virginia wrestling team captured a 20-12 dual win at Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at the Ted Constant Center in Norfolk, Va. Virginia (13-2) won six weight classes, highlighted by a technical fall by second-ranked Nick Sulzer (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) at 165 pounds. That match was an aberration for the day though, as eight of the 10 bouts were decided by three points or fewer in a hotly-contested dual. “That’s a really good team we just beat,” Virginia head coach Steve Garalnd said. “I’m proud of our guys, not only for the individual efforts but the overall team effort as well. We know the ODU coaches and their wrestlers well and they have a lot of talented guys up and down their lineup. But we’re really starting to see what kind of team we have, and it’s exciting to see guys like Nick Sulzer go out and get bonus points for the team and others picking up big wins for the team.” Stephen Doty (R-Sr., St. Louis, Mo.), Zach Nye (R-So., Enola, Pa.), Ethan Hayes (R-So., New Lebanon, Ohio), Nick Herrmann (So., Amarillo, Texas) and Blaise Butler (R-So., Belvidere, Ill.) also won by decision for Virginia, which picked up its sixth straight dual victory. The match started at 165 where Sulzer, ranked second nationally, racked up six takedowns as well as three back points in cruising to an 18-3 technical fall over Dillon Geoghegan for the lone bonus points of the dual. Sulzer is now 24-1 this year, with 18 of his wins resulting in bonus points (two falls, four tech falls, 12 major decisions). Doty upped his record to 20-4 with a 4-1 win over Billy Curling at 174, giving UVa an 8-0 edge before the Monarchs (3-8) picked up their first win over the day when Jack Dechow scored on a third-period takedown to hand 19th-ranked Jon Fausey (R-Sr., Dalmatia, Pa.) a 3-1 defeat at 184. Nye scored his fifth straight win as he recorded a third-period takedown to snap a 1-1 tie in defeating Kevin Beazley, 3-2, at 197. Nye is now 14-6 on the year and has gone 7-2 since the start of the new year. Hayes earned his second win of the weekend with a 4-2 victory over Matt Tourdot in the heavyweight bout, and Herrmann followed with a 5-2 decision over Brandon Jeske at 125, giving the Cavaliers a 17-3 team advantage. ODU captured the next three weight classes, all in close fashion. Scott Festejo pulled away late for an 11-6 decision over Joseph Martinez (R-So., Platteville, Colo.) at 133 before fourth-ranked Chris Mecate outlasted No. 14 Joe Spisak (R-Jr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) 3-1 at 141. Mecate scored a third-period takedown for the lone offensive points of the bout. Chris Yankowich (So., Norristown, Pa.) fell 3-0 to Lenny Richardson at 149 as the Monarchs cut their deficit to 17-12, but Butler, ranked 13th nationally, led nearly the entire way in a 5-2 decision over Tristan Warner at 157 to seal the team win. UVa returns to ACC competition at 7 p.m. Friday when it travels to No. 13 Pittsburgh (9-1) for a key ACC match as the teams tussle for the first time as conference rivals. Megaludis continued to pressure White, working his shoulders to the ground and working his way behind the Wildcat for a takedown and a 4-2 lead after cutting him loose. Megaludis quickly tacked on a third takedown and then a fourth to break open an 8-4 margin. Megaludis continued his offensive work with a fifth takedown and a ride out to lead 10-4 with 1:02 in riding time after one. Megaludis chose top to start the second, White escaped and Megaludis quickly took him down twice. The Lion junior added three near fall points after the second takedown and led 17-6 at the 1:00 mark. Megaludis added one more three point turn and led 20-6 with 2:46 in time after two. White chose down to start the third period and Megaludis continued his strong work on top. Looking to cement a tech fall or pick up a pin, Megaludis worked White's shoulders to the mat, nearly picking up the pin. The three-point near fall gave the Lion a 23-6 tech fall at the 6:39 mark. 133: Red-shirt freshman Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 15 at 133, took on Northwestern's Dominick Malone. Gulibon was the aggressor early, setting up his offense and forcing Malone towards the edge of the mat. Malone took his first shot off a reset and worked his way to a takedown and a 2-0 lead with 1:24 on the clock. Malone built up riding time with strong work up top but Gulibon escaped to a 2-1 score with :30 left in the opening period. Trailing 2-1, Gulibon chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 2-2 tie. Malone had 1:02 in riding time. Gulibon countered a slight Malone shot and quickly rolled behind him for a takedown and a 4-2 lead with 1:00 on the clock. The Lion freshman maintained control of Malone for the period's final minute, erasing the riding time and taking a 4-2 lead into the third period. Malone chose down to start the third period and Gulibon controlled the action once again from the top position. Malone was unable to work to his base as Gulibon first built up a 1:00-plus time edge and then forced a stall on the Wildcat. Gulibon then turned Malone for three back points and a 7-2 lead. A short ride out and Gulibon posted an 8-2 with 2:02 in riding time. 141: True freshman Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 141, wrestled NU junior Pat Greco. Retherford blew through an early takedown, taking the Wildcat down just :05 into the bout. The unbeaten Lion then began a dominating ride, keeping Greco bellied out for nearly a minute before the Wildcat escaped. Retherford continued to pressure Greco, taking multiple shots, forcing Greco into a stall warning and then turning a low single into a takedown and a 4-1 lead at the buzzer. Retherford chose down to start the second period, quickly escaped and then picked up his third takedown to lead 7-1 with 1:20 on the clock. Retherford cut Greco loose to a 7-2 score and turned right in for more offense. The Lion's furious offense allowed him to lead 7-2 with 1:36 in time after two. Greco chose neutral to start the third period and Retherford continued to force the Wildcat backwards. Retherford moved out to an 8-2 lead with a stall point at the 1:10 mark and then fought off a Greco shot for the next :20. He countered the move, rolled behind the Wildcat and took a 10-2 lead with a clinched riding time point at the :30 mark. A short ride out gave the Lion freshman an 11-2 major with 2:10 in riding time. 149: Red-shirt freshman Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.) took on talented Wildcat freshman Jason Tsirtsis, who was ranked No. 4 at 149. Beitz and Tsirtsis traded early shots in the middle of the mat. Tsirtsis gained control of Beitz's right knee and began working for a takedown. But Beitz was able to force a stalemate after :30 of wrestling and the score remained 0-0 at the 1:28 mark. Beitz nearly connected on a low single at the :40 mark, but Tsirtsis was able to back away to keep the bout scoreless after the opening stanza. Tsirtsis chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. The Lion freshman matched the ranked Wildcat shot for shot for the bulk of the period. The Lion connected on a single leg and looked to get a takedown but the official ruled no takedown. The Penn State corner called for a video review and the takedown was given. Beitz led 2-1 at the :27 mark. Tsirtsis was able to tie the score with a quick escape and the bout moved to the third period knotted at 2-2. Beitz chose down to start the third period but could not break free of a strong Tsirtsis ride. Tsirtsis maintained control by holding onto Beitz ankle and worked his riding time over 1:00. Beitz escaped to a 3-2 lead at the :50 mark but Tsirtsis had 1:13 in riding time. Time ran out and Tsirtsis' riding time sent the match to sudden victory tied 3-3. Tsirtsis got in on a single at the :40 mark, working for a winning takedown. Beitz nearly fought off the move but Tsirtsis connected for a 5-3 sudden victory win. 157: Senior James Vollrath (Richboro, Pa.) met Ben Sullivan at 157. Vollrath quickly took control of the match with a takedown out of the gates. The Lion senior was strong on top, locking up a cradle quickly for three back points and a 5-0 lead with 1:30 on the clock. He continued to turn Sullivan, looking for a pin. Sullivan rolled through the move but the second three point near fall gave the Lion an 8-0 lead after one. Sullivan chose down to start the second period and Vollrath quickly cradled the Wildcat, picking up the pin at the 4:01 mark. 165: Senior David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), ranked No. 1 at 165, took to the Rec Hall stage against No. 9 Pierce Harger of Northwestern. Taylor quickly took Harger down to lead 2-0 :30 into the bout. Harger escaped to a 2-1 score only to have Taylor connect on an ankle pick. Taylor then turned Harger for two back points and the Lion senior led 6-1 at the 1:15 mark. Taylor cut Harger loose with :25 left, used another quick pick and then tilted the Wildcat for three back points. The quick burst put Taylor up 11-2 after one. Harger chose down to start the second period only to be titled again by Taylor. Taylor picked up another three point near fall to move out to a 14-2 lead, reset, and titled Harger again to notch the 17-2 tech fall at the 4:45 mark. 174: Junior Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, faced off against Northwestern's Lee Munster, who entered the dual ranked No. 9. Brown scored quickly, taking Munster down for an early 2-1 lead. Brown then locked up a cradle on the edge of the mat, picking up the takedown before action moved out of bounds. Leading 4-1, Brown chose down on the reset after injury time and quickly escaped to a 5-1 lead. He then connected on a high single leg and led 7-1 with :50 on the clock. Brown rode Munster out and led 7-1 with 1:17 in time after one. Brown chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to an 8-1 lead. Brown added another takedown and took a 10- lead. He dominated the action from the top position before Munster took an injury default, giving Brown the win and putting Penn State up 29-3. 184: Senior Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 184, took on Wildcat sophomore Jacob Berkowitz. Ruth scored quickly, taking Berkowitz down, gaining control of his arm and turning him for two near fall points and a 4-0 lead at the 2:10 mark. The Loin All-American then locked up a cradle, turned the Wildcat and picked up the pin at the 1:36 mark. 197: Sophomore Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 7 at 197, faced off with No. 17 Alex Polizzi in a key match-up at 197. McIntosh scored first, taking Polizzi down to lead 2-1. The Lion sophomore then used a low single off a reset to take a 4-2 lead after cutting Polizzi loose with 2:00 on the clock. A throw by the Lion nearly led to a quick pin, but the takedown did give McIntosh the 6-2 lead. Polizzi notched his first takedown after an escape with :45 on the clock to cut McIntosh's lead to 7-5 after a McIntosh escape. The Lion, undaunted, used a low double for a late takedown to lead 9-5 after one. McIntosh chose down to start the second and quickly escaped to a 10-5 lead with 1:03 in riding time. Looking for bonus points, McIntosh bulled through a low double for a 12-5 lead at the 1:20 mark. Northwestern was deducted a team point with :50 on the clock for a second bench warning. McIntosh led 12-6 after two and Polizzi chose down to start the third. A quick escaped gave McIntosh a 12-7 lead with 1:35 on the clock and the Lion blew through another low double for a takedown and a 14-7 lead. Polizzi escaped to a 14-8 score and McIntosh looked to clinch a major with another takedown. McIntosh turned the trick with just :02 left and, with the final takedown and 2:08 in riding time, posted the 17-8 major. 285: Junior Jimmy Lawson (Tom's River, N.J.), ranked No. 12 at 285, met his second ranked foe of the weekend, facing off with No. 4 Mike McMullan in the heavyweight bout. The duo battled evenly for the first minute, with Lawson pushing off an early McMullan shot. McMullan gained control of Lawson's left leg, working for a takedown at the 1:20 mark. But Lawson was able to fight off the move until the :16 mark. McMullan took Lawson down on the edge of the mat and Lawson called quickly for injury time. The takedown and two near fall points put McMullan up 4-0 and the Penn State heavyweight was not able to continue, giving McMullan the injury default win.

PITTSBURGH -- The No. 13 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team (9-1) won a thrilling 19-18 dual over No. 5 Oklahoma State (4-4) this afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House. With his team trailing by three going into the final match, senior heavyweight P.J. Racciato gave Pitt its first lead of the afternoon when he was able to pin eighth-ranked Josh Kindig at 149 pounds. Thomusseit and Boyd entered the third even at 3-3 when Boyd was able to turn Thomusseit for two back points to gain a 5-3 edge. Thomusseit kept his composure and scored a reversal to even the match. With a bonus point for riding time locked up, Thomusseit cut Boyd and was able to score off a high single with 20 seconds left in the match to earn the 8-6 decision. At 197 pounds, Pitt needed Nick Bonaccorsi to win in order to keep its hopes of a victory alive and the redshirt sophomore delivered with a decision over Kyle Crutchmer. After the two combatants exchanged escapes, the match went to overtime even at 1-1. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman heavyweight Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS) used an overtime takedown to knock off two-time defending NCAA champion Tony Nelson and seal the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's 19-14 victory over No. 2 Minnesota on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 19) in front of 1,354 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines won six individual matches in the dual, improving to 3-0 in Big Ten Conference competition, while dealing Minnesota its first loss of the season. With just two points separating the teams, the dual came down to the final match, featuring the nation's top heavyweights -- No. 1 Coon and No. 2 Nelson. The wrestlers traded escapes in regulation and the first tiebreaker, neither riding for longer than 10 seconds. Coon got in deep on several shots earlier in the contest but scored his winning takedown off a counter attack in the second sudden-victory frame, turning the corner on a Nelson double leg to claim the match 4-2. He improved to 23-0 on the season. The Wolverines jumped out to a significant early advantage, claiming five of the first six matches to lead 16-3 entering Minnesota's gauntlet of ranked upperweights. Among the early victories, Michigan earned back-to-back upsets from fifth-year senior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) and freshman Brian Murphy (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS) at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, to put U-M in excellent shape at the intermission break. Grajales, ranked 12th at 149, took advantage of a big early lead to knock off No. 2-ranked Nick Dardanes, 6-4. The Wolverine senior struck first on an arm spin midway through the first period and rode out the rest of the period and all of the second. He added a penalty point in the third before giving up a pair of late takedowns in the waning moments that narrowed the final score. Murphy, ranked 15th, rallied from an initial deficit against eighth-ranked Dylan Ness at 157, scoring takedowns in the second and third periods to seal a 5-2 decision. After a scoreless first period, Ness grabbed the first lead with a quick escape in the second and subsequent low single-leg takedown. Muprhy escaped and shot in on a late single-leg attack of his own, limp-arming out of a whizzer to get the takedown at the buzzer. With the score deadlocked, Murphy choose neutral in the third and countered a late Ness single-leg shot to score the winning takedown in the final 10 seconds of the match. The Wolverines also earned early wins from sophomore/freshman Conor Youtsey (Parma, Mich./Mason HS) and senior/junior Steve Dutton (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point HS) at 125 and 141 pounds, respectively. Youtsey jumped out to a big early lead en route to a 12-6 decision against Sam Brancale in the opening match, scoring two takedowns and a pair of back points -- off a head scoop -- in the first period. He rode out the second and earned a reversal and three-point near fall in the third but gave up a late counter takedown and back points to lose the bonus point. Dutton also cruised in his 141-pound match against Josh Shupe, scoring three takedowns and eight back points, including a pair of three-point tilts, en route to a 16-3 major decision. Dutton appeared to have the technical fall in hand but had to take injury late, which cost him an escape point. Dutton, who made his Michigan debut last Friday at Illinois (Jan. 17), improved to 2-0 in the Wolverine lineup. Michigan came out of the intermission break with a win from fifth-year senior Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) at 165 pounds. The Wolverine senior, ranked seventh, scored on two first-period takedowns and rode for 2:38 en route to a 7-5 decision over Brandon Kingsley. The Gophers won three straight matches at the upperweights, earning bonus points at 174 and 197 pounds, to pull within two points on the scoreboard and set up the Coon-Nelson finale at heavyweight. The Wolverines (7-2, 3-0 Big Ten) will return to competition next Friday (Jan. 31), hosting intrastate rival Michigan State at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The 2014 Alliance Top Gun Wrestling Tournament had as deep and balanced a field as has been assembled in the history of the event. Three nationally ranked teams were in attendance. Headed into Friday night's quarterfinal round, it was looking like all three teams would be fighting for the title until tournament's end. However, 1-8 record in that round for No. 29 Claymont would end their hopes. On the other hand, both No. 4 Clovis (Calif.) and No. 8 Massillon Perry advanced seven wrestlers each to the semifinals. Headed into day two competition on Saturday, the Cougars from almost 3,000 miles away held a 1.5 point lead, as they advanced all 14 wrestlers, while the Panthers had only 12. Early in Day 2, the overwhelming Clovis depth would rear its head, as the Cougars placed twelve wrestlers and took an 11.5 point lead headed into the semifinal round. Massillon Perry placed only two wrestlers in addition to those in the semifinals. However, the semifinal round yielded a major swing, as the Panthers would exit that round with approximately a ten point lead. Massillon Perry was 6-1 in semifinals and 2-0 in consolation, while Clovis went 4-3 in semifinals and 4-1 in consolation. However, depth came into play in the consolation semifinal round when Clovis would go 5-2 (as opposed to Massillon Perry's 2-1). As a result, the Cougars led by 12 entering the medal matches. Clovis freshman Justin Mejia won the title at 106 pounds (Photo/Tony Rotundo, WrestlersAreWarriors.com)Upsets in the first two championship bouts of the evening would all but seal the Top Gun team championship to Clovis. First, at 106 pounds, No. 11 Justin Mejia (Clovis) defeated No. 2 Tyler Warner (Claymont), 7-6. The score was closer than the match, as Mejia scored a takedown and near falls in the first period and then had a third period takedown to take a 7-2 lead with about a minute left. Warner would cut into that lead with an escape, a very late takedown, and a second stall on Mejia. This weekend marked a return to competition for No. 3 Jose Rodriguez (Massillon Perry) at 113 pounds, after sustaining an injury in the first round at the Walsh Jesuit Ironman. He advanced to the finals with two majors, a technical fall, and a pin. In the championship bout he faced No. 19 Hayden Lee (Marysville), who reached the final with three pins and a technical fall. Rodriguez had beaten Lee 6-3 during the first day of competition at the Super 32 Challenge. However, on this occasion, Lee would score a takedown at the edge of the mat during the first period, and get a second period escape. That would be enough for a 3-0 victory, as Rodriguez was unable to finish any of his attacks during the last two periods. With that tournament performance, Lee was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. By that point, Clovis had taken an 18 point lead in the team race, and it was a margin that could not be overcome. However, that is not to say Massillon Perry was not valiant in their efforts. The Panthers won four of their five remaining championship bouts. David Bavery scored an 8-3 dec. over Khristian Olivas (Clovis) at 126 pounds, rallying back from giving up a match-opening takedown; No. 15 Casey Sparkman beat Jeff Hojnacki (CVCA) by 15-5 major dec. at 152; No. 12 Tony Dailey became a repeat champion at the Top Gun with a 20-8 major dec. over Cody Pollitt (Olentangy) at 160, even though the first period was scoreless; and Isaac Bast scored the winning points late in the third period in a 3-2 victory over Russell Miller (Miami Trace) at 170. Wins in consolation medal bouts from Josh Hokit for third at 160 and Brody Brand for fifth at 170 assured Clovis would clinch the tournament, as the Cougars led by two (289-287) after the 170-pound weight class, which was Massillon Perry's last match of the evening. Clovis would add to that margin with pins in third place bouts from A.J. Nevills (182) and Matt Weiss (220), which gave the Cougars 33 pins on the tournament (Massillon Perry had 30). No. 1 in the nation Nick Nevills capped the tournament with a 12-3 major dec. over Logan Sharp (West Branch) at 28 pounds. Nevills had three first period pins and two major dec.s in cutting through the field. In addition to the four titles by Massillon Perry, and the two titles for Clovis, two other teams had multiple weight class champions. Joining Hayden Lee as a champion for Marysville was Austin Pfarr, who won the 220-pound weight class with a 4-3 victory over Alex Woicehovich (Nordonia) in a battle of state placers. Pfarr scored a takedown in the second and reversal in the third to counteract three escapes from Woicehovich. Akron SVSM had a pair of champions in Ryan Skonieczny (138) and Aaron Adkins (182). Skonieczny, a three-time state placer and returning state runner-up, upended Nick Steed (Massillon Perry) 4-3 in the final. Skonieczny scored an escape and takedown to take a 3-1 lead in the third period, from which Steed responded with a match-tying reversal. However, Skonieczny scored an escape to take the final lead, and Steed was unable to counter with a meaningful attack to rally back. Defending state champ Adkins scored his needed points with a first period takedown and second period escape in a 3-2 victory over returning Top Gun champion Nate Hall (Olentangy). Hall did respond with a third period takedown, but it fell into the too little, too late bucket. One of the most impressive tournaments was had by freshman Corey Shie (Cincinnati LaSalle), champion of the 120-pound weight class. Shie opened the tournament with a pin and technical fall, before getting a second pin in a Friday night quarterfinal victory over defending Top Gun champion Dustin Warner (Claymont); Warner entered the event ranked No. 12 nationally at 113 pounds. The barrage continued with a 15-0 technical fall victory in the semifinal round. Despite giving up an early takedown against fellow Cadet National freestyle All-American Alex Mackall (Walsh Jesuit), Shie would respond with much aplomb in the second period. After two escapes and a takedown, with a Mackall reversal in there too, Shie held a 5-4 lead and was able to hit a barrel roll to take Mackall to his back. That made it 9-4 after two periods, and the wrestlers traded reversals in the third. As a result, Shie won the match 11-6. The evening's most exciting ending came in the 132-pound final, which quite frankly was a snooze fest until the last 15 seconds of the bout. With the score tied 1-1, returning state placer Nick Boggs (Painesville Riverside) scored the go-ahead takedown at the edge of the mat. Even though two-time state placer Isaiah Hokit (Clovis, Calif.) would be let loose with an escape, it was a 3-2 Boggs win. Rounding out the weight class champions were returning state runner-up Zac Carson (Uniontown Lake), who beat two-time state placer Taleb Rahmani (Marysville) 4-3 in a battle of juniors; and state placer Tyler McClellan (CVCA), who beat Robert West (Trinity, Pa.) 3-2 at 195 pounds. Team Standings: (1) No. 4 Clovis (Calif.) 302, (2) No. 8 Massillon Perry 287, (3) No. 29 Claymont 189.5, (4) Uniontown Lake 129.5 (5) Sandusky Perkins 125, (6) Akron SVSM 124.5, (7) Marysville 124, (8) Fort LeBoeuf (Pa.) 116.5, (9) Delaware Hayes 115, (10) Olentangy 106 Finals Results: 106: No. 11 Justin Mejia (Clovis, Calif.) dec. MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Before a record-setting home crowd, No. 2-ranked Concordia proved its win over perennial national power Augsburg on Sunday was no fluke as they won eight individual matches against the Auggies and rolled to a 26-6 victory. The record-breaking crowd got to see a record-setting performance by the Cobbers as Concordia beat the Auggies at home for the first time in program history. CC beat Augsburg 21-15 last weekend at the National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa and did that one better by posting a 20-point victory. "It was a great team win," commented Concordia head coach Matt Nagel. "All 10 wrestlers stepped up and showed the work ethic they have put up in the room during practice. It was fun to see the hard work the team showed in practice this week pay off in the dual meet." Concordia, who is ranked second in the nation in the latest NWCA Division III poll, ups its dual-meet record to 9-2 on the year. Augsburg falls for the third straight time and is now 5-3 on the season. Cobber senior Kyle LeDuc set the tone for the entire match in the very first individual bout. After the coaches decided to draw for the start weight, LeDuc stepped on the mat and dominated his match at 157 and came away with a 10-0 major decision at 157. That would start a string of four consecutive wins to start the dual for the Cobbers. LeDuc, who is ranked 10th in the nation at 157, improved his season record to 19-7. Brandon Haluptzok, Sebastian Gardner and Chris Harrison followed LeDuc with wins. Haluptzok's win at 165 was one of the two key wins for the Cobbers. It was only the fifth match of the year for Haluptzok who spent the first semester studying in Australia. Haluptzok avenged a 4-1 loss to Justin Bowland six days ago and came up with a 3-1 overtime win. Gardner posted the only other "bonus point" victory when he scored an 11-2 win at 174. He nearly pinned his opponent but came away with the nine-point victory after beating Tyrell Martin in overtime last Sunday. Harrison completed the four-match win streak to open the meet by recording an 11-9 win at 184. His win gave the Cobbers a 14-0 lead. It was Harrison's 18th win of the year and improved his overall record to 18-5. Concordia dropped the next two matches but then sophomore Gabe Foltz put the crowd on its feet by scoring a 3-2 win over No.2-ranked Mike Fuenffinger. Fuenffinger entered the match with a 16-1 overall record with his only loss coming at the hands of Dylan Peters from Northern Iowa who is currently ranked seventh in NCAA Division I. Foltz battled through the entire three periods and was able to get an escape in the third period to earn the win. "I thought I could come up with the win," said Foltz. "Wrestling him in the duals (National Duals) gave me confidence. "It's great to come out of nowhere and get the win." Jacoby Bergeron, Yonas Gebreab and Jake Long finished off the match by posting wins at 133, 141 and 149. Bergeron entered the dual ranked third in the nation and had to battle until the final period to finally come up with a 6-2 win. He is now 19-6 this season. Gebreab also won his bout in the final period. He earned a 3-1 victory at 141 and is 19-10 for the year. Long almost ended the match in style as he had his opponent on his back in the first 30 seconds of his bout at 149. Long couldn't come up with the pin fall but never trailed in the match and got a 9-6 victory. He joined LeDuc and Bergeron in the 19-win club and is now 19-7. The Cobbers will stay at home and host Jamestown in a dual meet on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. Results: 125 – Gabe Foltz (CC) dec. #2 Mike Fuenffinger (AC); 3-2 (Concordia 17-6) 133 – #3 Jacoby Bergeron (CC) dec. TEMPE, Ariz. -- Same state, different day, different script. A day after falling to Grand Canyon University in a fashion that head wrestling coach Ben Cherrington could only describe as disappointing, Northern Colorado rebounded in a big way to defeat Arizona State Saturday, 24-15. "We had a great dual tonight," Cherrington said about the win against ASU. "They went out there, they believed in each other and they put together a solid team effort. And we won a dual that we weren't expected to win. That's what takes to you to the next level. As a coach, I'm as excited as I've ever been. Anytime you get a win like this, it's big for the program." In what turned out to be a drama-filled and closely contested dual, the last two matches were what decided it. Arizona State led 16-15 heading into the 197-pound match, where Northern Colorado's Cole Briegel (Burlington) won by flagrant default following an illegal hit from ASU's Wesley Moore. The disqualification gave the Bears six team points and docked a point from the Sun Devils' total, making the score 21-15. Heavyweight Henry Chirino (Brandon, Fla.) then capped the dual with a 2-1 decision against Chace Eskam for the final 24-15 margin. "Briegel had an interesting match. The kid he was wrestling kind of lost his cool and ended up getting kicked out of the match, which obviously helped, but Cole was right there in the match when it happened," Cherrington said. "Henry then went out and did what Henry does. He wrestled solid, wrestled his match and took care of business." Northern Colorado's Trey Andrews, wrestling about three hours away from his hometown of Safford, Ariz., got the Bears on the board first by recording a 4-3 decision over Ares Carpio at 125 pounds. This was Andrews' second win over Carpio this season after having beaten him via pin in two minutes, 42 seconds at the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1. Andrews now has 16 wins this season. Sonny Espinoza (Pueblo) and Nick Adams (Monument) lost decisions 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, but 149-pounder Beau Roberts (Boise) tied the dual for the Bears with a 4-0 shutout of Preston McCalmon. "Sonny wrestled a very tough match -- probably his best performance. Even though he didn't get the W, that was his the best performance he's had in a couple months," Cherrington said. "Roberts had a positive match. That's his first win since we were out in Bloomington, and he went out and handled the kid. He got the first takedown and controlled the match the rest of the time." At 157 pounds, Mitchell Polkowske (LaJara) then picked up bonus points for the Bears with a pin of Joel Smith in 2:36, and Charlie McMartin (Boise) followed it with a 15-10 decision over James Brundage. "Mitchell just put the guy on his back and pinned him, and that's what we need from our best guys. We need them to score bonus points like that," Cherrington said. "Charlie probably had the most exciting match of the night. His guy came out and took Charlie down twice and thought he was coasting, and Charlie came back and nailed him with a big double-leg takedown and stayed wrestling hard after that, in what ended up being a big, big win for us in the dual." Josh Van Tine (Broomfield) and Nick Bayer (Maple Valley, Wash.) lost by fall and major decision, respectively, allowing the Sun Devils to take their final lead at 16-15. The Bears now return to Greeley to host their first home dual of 2014, a tilt with Cal Poly at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26. Results: 125 – Trey Andrews (UNC) def. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- A first-period fall by Devon Lotito and major decisions by Luke McDonald and Nicolas Johnson powered the Cal Poly wrestling team to a 29-9 victory over Menlo College in a non-conference dual meet Saturday afternoon in the Mott Athletics Center. Coach Brendan Buckley's Mustangs snapped a three-match losing streak and evened their dual meet mark at 3-3. Menlo fell to 3-6. Lotito notched his second fall of the season and fifth of his two-year Mustang career, pinning Juan Zorrilla of Menlo in 1 minute, 29 seconds. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Oklahoma State wrestling team is 4-3 after a dominating 30-6 win over Big 12 foe West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va., on Saturday. Four of the night’s 10 bouts ended in bonus points for the Cowboys. “It was good to get back on the winning side,” coach John Smith said. “I liked Morrison’s and Perry’s matches. They wrestled two of the better kids on that team, and both picked up major decisions. Those are the things that we hope to more and more of.” Sophomore Eddie Klimara kicked it off for the Pokes, defeating Cory Stainbrook, 7-2. It was Klimara’s ninth win of the season. No. 4 Jon Morrison put the first of several bonus points on the board for the Cowboys with his 13-4 major decision over Nathan Pennesi at 133 pounds. The Pokes suffered a loss at 141 pounds, when Anthony Collica gave up back points and a win to Colin Johnston in a bout that ended 8-4. Josh Kindig, the nation’s No. 7 149-pounder, redeemed the loss with a 6-2 decision over Mountaineer Mike Morales. No. 2 Alex Dieringer picked up his eighth fall of the season with his pin over Brutus Scheffel in 4:27. Tyler Caldwell, ranked No. 5, earned a decision over Ross Renzi, 6-1, at 165 pounds. He was followed by a pair of major decisions from No. 2 Chris Perry and No. 18 Nolan Boyd at 174 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively. Darnell Bortz stepped in for the Cowboys at 197 pounds. LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Iowa wrestling team won seven of 10 bouts to defeat Nebraska, 22-9, on Saturday at the Devaney Center. The win was Iowa's seventh straight in the series. Thomas Gilman, Tony Ramos, and Josh Dziewa spotted Iowa a 10-0 lead with two wins and a major decision, but Nebraska kept things close with three wins in matches that featured ranked opponents. It was a stretch that got UI head coach Tom Brands' attention. "Those three matches - 149, 157, 174 - the whole country, or anyone paying attention to this dual meet, is talking about it, and we went 0-for-3," said Brands. "We won seven matches. I do not feel like we won seven matches. We left two major decisions off the board, but you have to keep moving forward." Gilman used a point for riding time to defeat No. 9 Tim Lambert, 2-1, at 125. Ramos scored five takedowns to record his team-best fifth major decision, 15-4, at 133, and Dziewa used two takedowns and two near-fall points to win 9-2 at 141. Nebraska (8-1, 2-1) closed to within 10-6 before intermission with a pair of wins at 149 and 157. Fifth-ranked Jake Sueflohn defeated No. 13 Brody Grothus, 5-2, at 149, and third-ranked James Green ended Derek St. John's 27-match win streak with a 9-7 win at 157. Nick Moore used three takedowns to win 8-2 at 165, but fourth-ranked Robert Kokesh closed the gap with a 7-3 win over No. 6 Mike Evans at 174. After Nebraska pulled to within 13-9, freshman Sammy Brooks swung the momentum back toward the Hawkeyes when he finished a single-leg with 17 seconds into the sudden-victory period to defeat No. 11 T.J. Dudley, 6-4, at 184. "We knew if I kept the pressure on him his level would go down, so I just tried to keep my pace as high as I could, even if I wasn't feeling good," said Brooks. "You just push through and wrestle hard." Brooks wasn't able to finish a number of shots in the first and second periods, but eventually caught Dudley on the edge and grabbed a 4-3 lead with 37 seconds left in the third. Dudley escaped to force overtime, but Brooks went right back to the leg, ending the match and earning his second straight win over a rated opponent. "He is an athlete," said Brooks. "He can explode out and (avoid) the takedown, so you have to get ready. Ideally you don't even let that happen. You pick him up and put him down hard and get the takedown, but in a match like this it's going to take more than one attempt." Brooks' win extended Iowa's lead to 16-9, and Nathan Burak (197) and Bobby Telford (285) closed with a pair of decisions for the final 22-9 score. Third-ranked Iowa (11-1, 4-0) returns to the mat Saturday, Jan. 25 when No. 2 Minnesota visits Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets are available through the UI Athletic Ticket Office over the phone at 1-800-IA-HAWKS or online at hawkeyesports.com. The dual will be televised on BTN. "We have to get ready again. We have one dual this week and one dual meet the next week, and we have to put a lineup out there that is going to score," added Brands. "We have to use the whole clock. The whole seven minutes." Notes: Attendance was 3,946... Iowa won its seventh straight in the series... Thomas Gilman improved to 5-1 against ranked opponents... Ramos earned his fifth major decision of the season... St. John's winning streak was stopped at 27, a career long... Sammy Brooks won his third in a row and second straight against ranked opponents. LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell wrestling team posted a 2-0 record Saturday with wins over Brown and Clarion in Davis Gym. Both matches were in doubt entering the heavyweight bout, but Joe Stolfi posted pins in both matches to propel the Bison to the two comeback victories. Paul Petrov, Rustin Barrick and Tyler Lyster were also undefeated on the day. Bucknell opened the day with a 22-19 victory over Brown with back-to-back pins by Lyster and Stolfi at 197 and 285 erasing a 19-10 deficit. The Bison then trailed 18-12 in the nightcap against Clarion, but decisions by Rory Bonner and Lyster evened the score and then Stolfi recorded his 15th pin of the season to clinch the six-point victory for Bucknell (5-6, 2-0 EIWA). Clarion (6-10) and Brown also wrestled in between the two Bucknell matches and the Golden Eagles posted a 24-16 win against the Bears. The Bison had 10 individual victories on Saturday and five of them were by pin. Petrov added another bonus-point win with a major decision to open the day against Brown. Despite Petrov’s early victory, the Bison trailed Brown 19-10 with just two bouts to go. After a scoreless first period, Lyster scored five quick points on a reversal and a near fall midway through the second period. He followed immediately with a pin, his third of the season. Stolfi then took to the mat knowing a decision would tie the score, but he pinned Ryder Cavey in 2:34 after building a 4-1 advantage. Connor Lapresi and Barrick also posted wins by decision against Brown, which fell to 0-5, 0-4 EIWA. A comeback by the heavier weights was again needed in the nightcap as the Bison won four of the final bouts. They nearly won all five as 174-pounder Joey Krulock battled back from a 5-0 second-period deficit to force overtime against Ryan Darch, but Darch recorded a takedown in the first 20 seconds of the overtime period to give the Golden Eagles an 18-12 advantage.
