EVANSON, Ill. -- The 19th-ranked Badgers (11-4 overall, 5-1 Big Ten) notched their fourth victory over a ranked opponent Sunday afternoon by defeating No. 16 Northwestern (6-5, 1-5) 23-15. Wisconsin defeated Indiana, 23-12, Friday night to pick up a pair of conference road victories over the weekend. “Those were two big wins on the road,” said UW assistant coach Trevor Brandvold. “We are getting better every match and that has been good to see.” No. 10 Ryan Taylor and No. 6 Tyler Graff once again got the Badgers off to a strong start and each recorded bonus-point victories. Taylor won by major decision, 21-8, over Garrison White at 125 lbs., while Graff recorded a four-point technical fall over Dominick Malone in 1:13. Taylor’s 21 points were the second-highest mark he has recorded in a match this season while Graff earned his eighth technical fall victory of the year. Jesse Thielke then recorded the biggest win for the Badgers on the day. He battled in back-and-forth fashion with Pasquale Greco at 141 lbs., and ultimately came away with the victory, 5-4. Greco was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, resulting in the loss of a point for the Wildcats and Thielke’s win gave the Badgers a commanding 11-0 lead. “Jesse Thielke had a big win for us today,” continued Brandvold. “We are getting better every time we step on the mat.” After TJ Ruschell fell by major decision at 149 lbs., to Northwestern’s Jason Tsirtsis by a score of 13-2, No. 7 Isaac Jordan grabbed his 21st win of the season with a 6-3 decision over Ben Sullivan at 157 lbs. Jordan’s win comes two days after recording his first victory over a top-5 opponent this season. Following Frank Cousins’ 4-0 loss to No. 9 Pierce Harger at 165 lbs., Scott Liegel turned in an impressive performance by pinning Robert Coukos in 1:44. The fall was Liegel’s third of the season and it gave the Badgers a 20-7 lead. Senior Jackson Hein recorded UW’s last victory of the day by defeating Jacob Berkowitz by decision, 8-3, at 184 lbs. With the win, Hein improves to 10-3 on the season. Northwestern then rattled off a pair of wins with ranked wrestlers to close out the match. At 197 lbs., No. 17 Alex Polizzi pinned Timmy McCall in 5:57 while No. 4 Michael McMullan won by decision over No. 10 Connor Medbery, 4-3. “Connor (Medbery) had a great heavyweight match,” concluded Brandvold. “That kid was in the national finals last year and Connor lost by a point. I like that. Having Jackson (Hein) back was big also. Overall it was a good weekend.” The Badgers return home next Sunday when to host North Dakota State. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the UW Field House. Results: 125 #10 Ryan Taylor (WIS)maj. dec. West Lafayette, Ind. -- The No. 10 Nebraska wrestling team (10-1, 4-1 Big Ten) won eight matches against No. 21 Purdue on Sunday afternoon to post a 28-9 victory over the Boilermakers. Senior 133-pounder Shawn Nagel pinned No. 14 Cashe Quiroga in the fifth match of the night, as he was one of two Huskers to earn bonus points against Purdue. Robert Kokesh (174) added a major decision in the final bout of the afternoon. Nagel’s fall came in 3:53 as he improves to 9-5 on the season. The dual started at 184 pounds, where redshirt freshman TJ Dudley notched a 5-1 decision over Purdue’s Tanner Lynde. Dudley earned a takedown in the opening stanza before riding out Lynde in the second period. Dudley started the third period in the down position and earned a reversal before tacking on a point for riding time. Nebraska suffered a loss at 197 pounds as No. 20 Caleb Kolb fell by a 3-1 decision to No. 15 Braden Atwood, but the Huskers picked up victories at heavyweight and 125 pounds before Nagel’s pin. At heavyweight, Collin Jensen battled Alex White to a scoreless first period before the Husker redshirt freshman escaped in the second and added a takedown. He gave up an escape in the final period but earned a riding time point to cap the match. No. 9 Tim Lambert (125) managed a 3-0 decision over Camden Eppert in the following match to give Nebraska a 9-3 lead. Lambert, a redshirt freshman, earned a first-period takedown before riding out Eppert in the second period and earning an escape in the third stanza. After Nagel’s fall, Nebraska’s Colton McCrystal was pinned by Danny Sabatello in 6:53 at 141 pounds. Clinging to a 15-9 lead, the Huskers won the final four matches in convincing fashion, outscoring the Boilermakers 40-11 during that stretch. At 149 pounds, junior Jake Sueflohn prevailed over Brandon Nelsen by an 11-4 margin before top-ranked 157-pounder James Green defeated Alex Griffin by the same score in the following match. Sueflohn earned four takedowns in his match, three of which occurred in the third period. He improves to 24-3 on the season. Green managed three takedowns against Griffin and earned two reversals from the down position. Green, a junior, continues his undefeated run with a 24-0 record following his victories this weekend. At 165 pounds, sophomore Austin Wilson earned a 6-0 triumph over Chad Welch. After a scoreless first period between the pair, Wilson earned near fall points in the second period. In the third period, Wilson earned an escape, takedown and riding time point for the final margin. He completed a perfect 2-0 weekend without giving up any points. Reigning All-American Kokesh (174) capped the Husker victory with 12-3 triumph over Patrick Kissel. Kokesh is 26-1 this season and improves to 11-0 in duals. Next weekend, the Huskers travel to Champaign, Ill., to grapple against Illinois on Saturday. The dual is slated to start at 4 p.m. CT, and will be televised on the Big Ten Network. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Senior 149-pound Raymond Borja’s (Virginia Beach, Va.) major decision with one bout remaining proved to be the deciding factor as the Navy wrestling team (3-2) scored a 19-18 victory over North Carolina (5-7) Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill. The Mids have now won 11 of the last 12 meetings against the Tar Heels, including five of the last six in Chapel Hill. With the match deadlocked at 15 with two bouts remaining, Borja stepped to the mat where he met UNC redshirt sophomore Christian Barber. Borja took a 7-1 lead after the opening period, but Barber, who came into the match with a 23-6 overall record and a 7-1 dual mark, trimmed the lead to 7-4 heading into the final period. Borja, though, earned the escape to start the third and and it propelled him to a pair of takedowns and a pair of near falls en route to an 18-5 major decision. With a 19-15 lead, Navy sent senior Zach Johnson (Memphis, Tenn.) onto the mat for the final bout of the afternoon. Johnson, however, was unable to get anything going, but was able to fight off any chance of a near fall by UNC’s Jake Crawford who desperately needed the extra point victory. Crawford picked up the 6-0 win, but it wasn’t enough as the Tar Heels surrendered the 19-18 victory to Navy. “Ray came up huge for us,” said Navy interim head coach Brian Antonelli. “He wrestled for the team knowing he needed to get extra points. That’s what teammates do. I couldn’t be more proud of his effort and the message he sent.” Navy opened the match with its two best wrestlers on the mat early. Returning NCAA qualifier Peyton Walsh (Glen Allen, Va.) beat Carolina’s John Michael Staudenmayer for a second consecutive year in dual action with a 4-1 decision at 165 pounds. Walsh is now 4-0 in dual meets this season and 13-4 over his career. “Peyton and Staudenmayer have met a number of times. He (Staudenmayer) is a tough wrestler, but Peyton, like he has all year, just grinds out the close matches.” Fifteenth-ranked Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.) gave Navy a 9-0 advantage with his pin against Tar Heels redshirt freshman Scott Marmoll. Miller was in command of the match from the beginning, taking Marmoll to the mat and then acquiring a pair of near falls for an 8-0 lead after the first period before getting the pin in the second period. For Miller, it was was his sixth win by fall this season and 16th of his career. UNC briefly stopped Navy’s momentum with a 10-5 victory by junior Alex Utley at 184 pounds. He used a takedown and a near fall late in the second period to catapult him to the win over Navy sophomore William Miller (Chinook, Mont.) who was making his first collegiate dual meet appearance. Navy, though, extended its lead to 15-3 behind wins at 197 and 285 pounds by Paul Rands (Cary, Ill.) and Colynn Cook (Murrysville, Pa.), respectively. Rands scored a takedown against Frank Abbondanza just 30 seconds into the match and never looked back as he claimed a 9-2 victory. At 3-1 in dual action this winter, it’s the most dual victories he has had during his career (including at Northwestern his freshman year). Meanwhile, Cook had a strong second period where he used a pair of takedowns and an escape to take a 5-2 lead. He added riding time to post a 6-3 decision and snap a three-match losing streak. “Cook and Rands did a nice job today,” added Antonelli. “Colynn continues to improve each match. He was able to contol the tie-up and got some points. “Rands is putting it together. I think he’s staying composed and focused on getting points. Since the tournament cycle ended, he seems to have gotten into a groove.” While Navy held a comfortable 15-3 lead midway through the match, North Carolina rallied behind its strength in the lightweights and won thre in a row to tie the match. Navy rookie Brenden Campbell (New Castle, Ind.) was the agressor early in his match against 20th-ranked Nathan Kraisser at 125 pounds, but a short letdown opened a window for Kraisser to take Campbell to the mat and pick up the fall at 2:09. “Brenden took the fight to Kraisser, but I think he relazed a little and reset just for a second and he pounced on him. I applaud his effort, but it’s a lesson learned that you can’t let down against a talented wrestler like him (Kraisser).” Freshman Troy Heilmann scored a 5-0 victory over Navy 133-pound junior Colton Rasche (Plano, Ill.) who has struggled with an injury as of late and in turn so, too, has his record. Rasche has dropped four of his last five matches. Carolina continued the upperhand at 141 pounds where sixth-ranked Evan Henderson dealt Navy senior Joe Locksmith (Kissimmee, Fla.) a 4-0 loss to knot the match at 15. The Mids return to action next Saturday when they travel to New London, Conn. in hopes of adding to their list of All-Academy Championship titles. The 20th edition of the All-Academy Championship features Air Force, Army, The Citadel, Coast Guard, the Merchant Marine Academy, Navy, Norwich and VMI. Action will begin at 10:00 am with the finals streamed live beginning at 4:00 pm. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Old Dominion University wrestling team (5-8, 1-2) resumed Mid-American Conference play tonight with a 21-10 win on the road against the University of Buffalo. The win is the first ever MAC victory in Old Dominion history. ODU picked up victories tonight from Michael Hayes (133), Alexander Richardson (149), Tristan Warner (157), Billy Curling (174), Jack Dechow (184), Kevin Beazley (197) and Jake Henderson (Heavyweight). “We had a good scrap with Buffalo tonight,” said ODU head coach Steve Martin. “Our guys fought hard and executed their attacks as well as their style. It was a good simulation for the MAC tournament as we had back-to-back competition two days in a row. Michael Hayes, Lenny Richardson, Tristan Warner, Billy Curling and Jack Dechow completed the weekend with back-to-back victories. Kevin Beazley defeated a tough opponent and Jake Henderson wrestled well at Heavyweight. Chris Mecate had an unusual loss as he got caught in a 5-point hold off of his own leg attack. This weekend gives us several technical areas that we need to improve in. We look forward to being at home and competing against MAC opponents NIU and Central Michigan next weekend.” At 174 pounds, Curling turned the match in ODU’s favor with a 7-4 decision victory over Rrok Ndokaj. Dechow (184) won by a 3-1 overtime decision, which gave the Monarchs a 15-10 lead. Beazley’s (197) 7-3 decision win gave ODU enough team points to secure the team victory. The night started at 125 pounds where Buddy Scarborough fell by a 13-5 major decision. Results: 125- Mike Soria (BUF) won by maj. dec. over Buddy Scarborough (ODU), 13-5. DeKALB, Ill. -- A young Mizzou Wrestling program was forced to quickly forget about their first dual loss of the season Friday night, and did so by way of a 31-0 shutout victory versus MAC-foe Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon. All 10 Tigers to touch the mat emerged victorious, including a major decision victory by sophomore Cody Johnston in his first career start. Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith gave Johnston the nod at 184 pounds Saturday afternoon, and the Tiger sophomore didn't disappoint. Johnston was a scoring machine early on, tallying three takedowns and two nearfalls en route to a 13-3 major decision over Caleb Busson, the only bonus point victory on the day. It was his first major decision of the season, and his 11th win in bonus point territory. Johnston was the 18th grappler to make a dual start for the Tigers in six dual meets. With five freshmen in Mizzou's starting lineup, many young Tigers are starting to grow up quickly, especially after the adversity they faced Friday night in Northern Iowa. Freshman Joey Lavallee went 2-0 on the road trip thanks in large part to a takedown with 11 seconds remaining at 157 pounds. Northern Illinois' Andrew Morse led 3-2 with riding time locked up, and Lavallee found a way to wrap him up with just seconds left. The bout went to overtime, where Lavallee only needed 10 more seconds for a takedown in sudden victory. "We were knocked down last night by a really good team. I know as a young team they were questioning who we were as a team, and they responded the right way," said Smith following his program's second shutout in two weeks. "I mean, we had (Joey) Lavallee down 3-0 and then coming back to tie it with under 30 seconds to go, and then win it in overtime. And Cody Johnston didn't even know he was wrestling until yesterday, and stepped up big for us, not just by winning but getting bonus points as well. We had the right attitude and right responses to the adversity we faced this weekend. I really enjoy this team, and the character and fight they bring, which we saw today." Heavyweight Devin Mellon closed out Saturday's matinee dual with a 2-1 overtime victory in what was a big matchup with possible implications for the MAC Conference Championships in March. Mellon and NIU's Jared Torrence traded escapes in the first seven minutes to send the bout to overtime tied at one-a-piece. Mellon and Torrence would go to a tiebreaker, where Mellon would escape and then proceed to keep Torrence from getting his own escape for the win. Mellon, tabbed No. 2 at heavyweight in the conference, backed up his ranking by topping Torrence, ranked No. 3 in the MAC. The team doesn't slow down for the next couple of weekend's, with two more top-10 matchups coming next weekend when Mizzou heads back on the road for duals against No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 9 Oklahoma State. The squad will then host Buffalo and Eastern Michigan at the Hearnes Center on Feb. 7 and Feb. 8 in what will be the first action at the Hearnes Center for the Tigers this year. Mizzou's matchup on Feb. 7 versus Buffalo will be a part of Mizzou Athletics' annual Beauty and the Beast event, where both Mizzou Wrestling and Mizzou's Gymnastics team compete simultaneously. Tickets for the event are on sale now at MUTigers.com/tickets. Stay tuned with everything Tiger Style wrestling by following the program on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. ITHACA, N.Y. -- Freshman Mark Grey and senior Mike Nevinger earned consecutive pins to help Cornell build a 16-0 lead after three matches and the Big Red swept through the lineup to knock off Brown 38-0 on Saturday afternoon at Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red improved to 6-0 on the season and won its 60th consecutive Ivy League match dating back to 2002. The Bears slipped to 0-6 on the year. Moita earned a surprising takedown 10 seconds into the match and nearly added another less than 30 seconds later before the two went out of bounds, but Garrett took the lead with a takedown of his own midway through the period. A locked hands call on Garrett during the ride tied it at 3-3, but the sophomore rode him out to secure more than a minute. After choosing down to start the second, Garrett escaped nearly immediately and quickly spun behind him to go up 7-3 after a second stalling call on Moita gave him a penalty point. He continued to push the pace and earned another takedown to extend the lead heading into the third. Garrett tilted him to his back right away for a two-point nearfall, then after cutting Moita loose, was able to take him down quick to secure the major decision and a 14-5 victory. After missing more than a month due to injury, Grey was able to light up the Friedman crowd with a pin in his return. The rookie beat the clock in the second, turning Brown's Anthony Finocchiaro to the back with a cradle and squaring the shoulders on the mat with one second left to add six points to Cornell's total. Mike Nevinger needed three minutes less than Grey, earning the fall just 1:45 into his match with Jack Twomey-Kozak. After a quiet first minute between the two, Nevinger caught the rookie in a bad position and earned the fall after nearly 30 seconds of jostling with Twomey-Kozak on his back trying to avoid the pin. With a 16-0 team lead, senior Conner David was able to earn a sudden victory decision over Cortlandt Choate. After a 2-2 tie after seven minutes thanks to a last-second escape in the third by David to knot the match, the senior was able to take the 149-pound match with a double leg takedown of Choate right before the two would head into the ride-out periods. Realbuto controlled the 157-pound bout over Justin Staudenmayer, earning a 5-0 lead after the first period with a takedown and a three-point nearfall en route to a 9-0 major to make it 19-0 for the Big Red. Dylan Palacio made it six straight wins in the dual after the intermission, getting a first period takedown to take an early lead. A Phillip Marano escape in the second sent the match into the third tied 2-2, but with Palacio having a ride time advantage of 1:35. The freshman added a pair of takedowns in the third to clinch the 7-3 decision. At 174 pounds, Duke Pickett was able to scratch a 4-2 triumph over Ricky McDonald. A first period takedown proved to be the difference in the win as Pickett improved to 12-4 on the season and 3-2 in dual meet competition. The feature match of the day was at 184 pounds with third-ranked Gabe Dean meeting No. 10 Ophir Bernstein, with the rookie escaping with a 3-2 decision. It was Dean's second win of the year against Bernstein, as the two met earlier in the year in Las Vegas with the rookie taking a 4-1 win. After a scoreless first period where both wrestlers were able to defend against strong shots, Dean opened the scoring with an escape 25 seconds into the second. Bernstein was able to reverse Dean early in the third to take a 2-1 lead, but the freshman was able to reverse it back to make it 3-2 and then rode out the junior for the win. Jace Bennett took the 197-pound bout over Augustus Marker, 10-5, to give Cornell a 35-0 victory. The two were tied at 4-4 after a high-scoring first period that featured dual reversals, though Bennett also had 1:35 in ride time. The junior's second period escape made it 5-4 for the Big Red and he was able to earn a takedown and a two-point nearfall at the buzzer when Marker took a desperation shot that went badly. Cornell completed the dual sweep at heavyweight with Jacob Aiken-Phillips controlling Ryder Cavey for a 6-0 decision. Aiken-Phillips was able to earn a first period takedown and two nearfall points to go up 4-0. A second period escape and ride time closed out the 38-0 team victory. The Big Red will be back in action against Rutgers tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Newman Arena. The dual will also serve as a fundraiser for Hospicare of Ithaca. Results: 125: Nahshon Garrett (Cornell) won by major decision over Vincent Moita (Brown), 14-5 133: Mark Grey (Cornell) won by fall over over Anthony Finocchiaro (Brown), 4:59 141: Mike Nevinger (Cornell) won by fall over Jack Twomey-Kozak (Brown), 1:45 149: Conner David (Cornell) won by decision over Cortlandt Choate (Brown), 4-2 (sv) 157: #8 Brian Realbuto (Cornell) won by major decision over Justin Staudenmayer (Brown), 9-0 165 - #17 Dylan Palacio (Cornell) won by decision over Phillip Marano (Brown), 7-3 174 - Duke Pickett won by decision over Ricky McDonald (Brown), 4-2 184 - Gabe Dean (Cornell) won by decision over Ophir Bernstein (Brown), 3-2 197 - Jace Bennett (Cornell) won by decision over Augustus Marker (Brown), 10-5 285 - Jacob Aiken-Phillips (Cornell) won by decision over Ryder Cavey (Brown), 6-0

EDINBORO, Pa. -- Edinboro clinched the Eastern Wrestling League regular season crown on Saturday night with a 29-10 victory over Bloomsburg at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots wrapped up EWL competition with a perfect 5-0 record while winning for the second straight night, and improved to 7-3 overall. Bloomsburg is now 5-6 overall and 1-2 in EWL action. The Fighting Scots followed their usual pattern of jumping out to a big lead, as they won the first five matches, four by bonus points. That gave them a 23-0 lead. Bloomsburg would follow with a pair of decisions at 165 and 174 lbs. to close the gap to 23-6, but Edinboro would win two of the final three matches. Ernest James capped the evening with his first win in four tries against Bloomsburg's Justin Grant. James came in ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, while Grant was ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News. James would prevail with a 2-1 decision, the same score that Grant beat James by in the PSAC finals in December. Following a scoreless first period, James rode out Grant in the second period just 25 seconds remained. The fifth-year senior then registered his own escape at 1:38 to knot the score at 1-1. He would win thanks to the 1:13 in riding time. James is now 20-5 while Grant fell to 22-5. The night got underway with a 4-0 decision by Kory Mines, ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, over Sean Boylan at 125 lbs. Mines took a 1-0 lead with a quick escape in the second period, then picked up two near fall points at 1:`10 of the third period, along with owning a 1:57 advantage in riding time. He improved to 18-6. A.J. Schopp followed with a 16-0 technical fall over Nick Wilcox (18-9) at 133 lbs. as the two continued their long rivalry. Ranked second, Schopp led just 2-0 after one period, but he built the margin to 7-0 after two periods with two tilts. He registered his second takedown of the bout just over thirty seconds into the third period, and would tilt Wilcox two more times for a total of six points. Schopp is now 24-1 and boosted his career ledger to 96-12. Top-ranked Mitchell Port made it 14-0 with the only fall of the evening. He boosted his record to 20-0 with the pin of Elliot Zackoski at 3:54. He had three takedowns in the first period alone with a reversal early in the second period ultimately leading to the fall. After taking last night off against Cleveland State, Dave Habat turned in a strong showing at 149 lbs., winning by technical fall over Derek Goodwin, 18-2 at 4:26. Habit held a 9-2 lead after one period courtesy of three takedowns and three back points. He would add an escape and takedown, followed by a pair of three near fall tilts to end the match. Ranked 16th by InterMat and 17th by Amateur Wrestling News, Habat is now 20-4. Johnny Greisheimer found himself trailing 6-2 after less than two minutes in his 157 lb. match with Kevin Hartnett, as Hartnett took the Boro senior down three times. DALTON, Ga. -- Peter Anguiano of Grand Canyon took control early in the heavyweight match, and with the Collegiate Cup title on the line, dominated the rest of the way as Grand Canyon rallied in the final three weights to get past Shorter, 23-19. The win earns the Lopes the title in the first leg of the NCWA Championship Series, along with 24 team points that will carry over to the start of the NCWA Championships in March. Anguiano closed his big evening by pulling away from Shorter’s Marlen Morgan with a four-point second period and won, 11-4, to end the see-saw title match that had three lead changes and a tie after 10 bouts. Anguiano opened the night by pinning the top-ranked heavyweight, Ian Jones of Apprentice, in the first period of their semifinal match. The championship was tied 19-19 following the 235-pound match, where third-ranked Andrew Ewers’ won over GCU’s Nate Zobott, 9-4. Shorter led, 16-15, after Shorter’s Terrence Smith defended his top-ranking at 184 pounds with an 8-7 win over GCU’s Austin Gaun, ranked eighth. But Marcus Haughian came right back with an 8-0 major decision at 197 pounds to put GCU ahead, 19-16. GCU took control early in the match with wins in three of the first four matches. Zach Zehner won with a first-period pin at 141, and Lino Estrada put the Lopes on the board with a 12-2 major decision over Jesse Jones at 133. Mike Hamel, an NCAA Division II All-American last year, won by technical fall (16-1) at 149 to give GCU a three-match win streak and a 15-6 lead midway through the match. Shorter climbed back beginning at 157 pounds, where the Hawks’ second-ranked Kannon Madden beat GCU’s top-ranked Chayse Jackson, 6-3. Madden’s win was the last of a string of upsets where Shorter wrestlers defeated higher-ranked opponents from the NCWA rankings. Wally Figaro then decisioned Juan Carlos Maynes, and Dalton Lane majored Austin Trujillo, 11-3, to bring Shorter to within 15-13. In the opening match of the championship, Benjamin Smith edged AJ Salazar, 12-10. Lane should ascend to the top spot of the 174 rankings after beating Liberty’s top-ranked Keyshaun Ward in the semifinals, 9-0, along with other multiple changes sparked by Shorter’s and GCU results. Following Lane’s upset in the semi’s, the next match offered a 1-vs-2 match as well and Shorter again pulled out the win as top-ranked Terrence Smith edged Liberty’s Royal Brettrager, 8-5. The two wins helped Shorter take the lead, but the match still came down to heavyweight again, and the Hawks’ Marlen Morgan took down Zachary Newton in overtime for a 3-1 win to send Shorter into the final. GCU won a runaway over Apprentice, 54-0, in the other semifinal. Shorter will earn 23 team points toward the NCWA Championships based on its runner-up finish, with Liberty taking 22 points and Apprentice 21 with their top-four finishes. Every team that competed at the Collegiate Cup earned team points toward the championship based on the weighted scale. Central Florida took fifth place with a 24-19 win over Grand Valley State, and the rest of the top 10 was Mott Community College (Mich.) in seventh, followed by Middle Tennessee State, South Florida and Mercer. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed its sixth consecutive dual win, earning six straight matches to close the dual and surge past intrastate rival Michigan State, 26-6, on Friday night (Jan. 24) in front of 1,519 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines won eight individual matches in all to improve to 4-0 in Big Ten Conference competition. The two teams split the opening four bouts -- two decisions apiece -- with each team picking up an upset victory early in the dual. Freshman Domenic Abounader (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edward HS) used the overtime tiebreaker to take down No. 18-ranked John Rizqallah, 6-0, at 184 pounds. The match remained scoreless after regulation following rideouts for both wrestlers in the second and third periods. Abounader rode out the first 30-second tiebreaker and escaped quickly in the second, adding a counter takedown and cradling Rizqallah for three at the buzzer. The Spartans' upset came two bouts later at heavyweight, where Mike McClure -- ranked ninth in the latest InterMat poll -- used a late takedown and near fall to hand top-ranked freshman Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS) his first collegiate loss. The match was even at 1-1 until the final 20 seconds when McClure countered a Coon half shot to score on a single on the edge. With Coon battling to escape, McClure crunched him to add a two-point near fall out of the circle. Coon is now 23-1 this season. U-M also picked up an early win from senior/junior Collin Zeerip (Fremont, Mich./Hesperia HS), who defeated Nick Kaczanowski at 174 pounds, 2-1, on a first-period single leg. After the MSU heavyweight win, the remainder of the dual was all Michigan as the Wolverines won each of the final six matches to pull away. The Wolverines picked up back-to-back shutouts at the lowerweights -- their second and third of the dual meet. Sophomore/freshman Conor Youtsey (Parma, Mich./Mason HS) defeated Brenan Lyon, 5-0, at 125 pounds, countering a first-period headlock for a takedown midway through the first, earning a reversal in the second and riding out the third to gain 2:38 in time advantage. Sophomore Rossi Bruno (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) also rode out the third en route to a 2-0 decision over Garth Yenter at 133 pounds. Bruno got in deep on numerous deep attacks in the first and third periods but couldn't finish. Senior/junior Steve Dutton (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point HS) and fifth-year senior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) just missed on first-period falls at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively, both settling instead for major decisions. Dutton, ranked 13th at 141 pounds, earned his third straight major decision with a 14-2 win over Brian Gibbs, scoring on a double leg midway through the first period before adding a pair of three-point near falls on a leg turk and arm bar. Gibbs scored on a second-period bodylock, but Dutton rebounded with a quick reversal and added another high-crotch takedown in the third. Grajales, ranked seventh, had Nick Trimble caught in a cradle for the bulk of the first period but couldn't get the call in his 10-2 major decision win at 149 pounds. Grajales also scored on an arm drag in the second and rode for 2:01 to claim his eighth straight dual win. Freshman Brian Murphy (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS) took advantage of an early takedown to defeat Roger Wildmo, 4-2, at 157 pounds. He caught Wildmo reaching and spun behind for the match's lone takedown. The wrestlers traded escapes in the second and third, while Murphy, ranked 13th, earned an additional point for his 1:38 riding time. Fifth-year senior Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS), ranked seventh, capped the dual with an 8-2 decision over Bobby Nash at 165 pounds. He also took advantage of a quick start, scoring on an early head in the hole and subsequent two-point tilt in the first period. Yates added another takedown in the second and rode for 2:19. The Wolverines will continue Big Ten dual competition next weekend, traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State at 7 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 31) before returning home to face three-time defending NCAA champion Penn State at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 2) at Cliff Keen Arena. PITTSBURGH -- The No. 13 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team (10-1, 4-0 ACC) won the final four bouts of the day and used a pin from Mikey Racciato to cruise past ACC foe Virginia (13-3, 2-1 ACC), 25-9, this evening at Fitzgerald Field House. Anthony Zanetta started the Panthers out with a win at 125 pounds. The senior and UVa’s Nick Herrmann were knotted at 1-1 with a minute to go in the bout before Zanetta struck on a nice high single for the takedown to take the 3-1 lead and rode out Herrmann for the remainder of the period to give Pitt an early 3-0 lead. The Cavaliers were able to tie the match at 3-3 with a decision at 133 pounds, setting up a key match between Virginia’s 16th-ranked Joe Spisak and 19th-ranked Edgar Bright. Spisak scored the lone takedown of the opening frame to hold a 2-0 lead going into the second. In the second, Bright started on bottom but was able to gain a reversal to even the match. Following a stalemate call, Spisak was called for his third caution on bottom awarding Bright a point. Spisak was able to escape in the third to once again tie the match early in the third before Bright struck on a double near the edge of the mat with a mere 10 seconds left to bring the Fitzgerald Field House to its feet and give Pitt a lead it would not relinquish. Racciato helped push the Panther lead to nine points after four bouts when he pinned Justin Van Hoose at the 6:46 mark. Racciato was on Van Hoose early, scoring a pair of takedowns in the first and another in the second to lead 6-3 going into the third. Racciato then started down in the third and quickly escaped and went on the offensive, adding yet another takedown. As Van Hoose tried to escape, Raccaito was able to catch him out of position and turn him to his back for the fall. As a sold out crowd came to its feet before the match started, the duo met in the middle of the mat and worked for control early on. Megaludis tried to connect on an early shot but Delgado was able to force a stalemate at the 1:50 mark. Megaludis continued to shoot, forcing Delgado into a first stall warning at the :45 mark. After a reset at the :36 mark, blood time was called and then the period ended tied at 0-0. Megaludis chose down to start the second period and quickly reversed Delgado for a 2-0 lead. The Illini escaped only to have Megaludis get in on a low single quickly. Delgado was able to force a stalemate and action moved on at the 1:25 mark with Megaludis up 2-1. Megaludis looked to connect on a lightning quick low single off a reset. After a short scramble, Megaludis finished off the move and led 4-1 with :25 left. Delgado was awarded an escape after a video review and the match moved to the second with Megaludis up 4-2. Delgado chose down to start the third and quickly reversed Megaludis to tie the match at 4-4. Megaludis escaped to a 5-4 lead at the :55 mark and then fought off a strong Delgado high single until only :12 was left in the match. After a reset with :12 left, Megaludis was able to kill the clock and grab the thrilling 5-4 win. 133: Red-shirt freshman Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 15 at 133, faced off against No. 11 Zane Richards in a key battle at 133. The freshmen duo battled evenly for the first minute-plus with neither man able to find an opening to score. Each man worked for shoulder control but there was no give in the defense and the bout moved to the second tied 0-0. Richards chose down to start the second period but Gulibon quickly broke the Illini down, taking control up top to build up :47 riding time before Richards escaped to a 1-0 lead. Gulibon tried to score on a high-low combo at the :40 mark, but Richards was able to back out of bounds and force a reset with :17 on the clock. Gulibon chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 1-1 tie. The Lion freshman continued to make the Illini back to the outside circle. He nearly connected on a high single with 1:10 left but Richards' defense stayed true and the bout continued tied 1-1. The duo traded counter attempts to no avail with :30 on the clock. Tied 1-1, the bout moved into sudden victory. Richards countered a Gulibon shot :30 into the extra time and grabbed the hard-fought 3-1 (sv) win. 141: True freshman Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 141, met John Fahy. Retherford fought off an early Fahy shot, then worked in on his own single leg and connected for two points with 1:42 on the clock. The unbeaten Lion then went to work up top, breaking Fahy down and building up a sizeable riding time edge while trying to turn the Illini for back points. Fahy escaped to a 2-1 score but Retherford's consistent offense led to another takedown with :20 on the clock and the Lion led 4-1 with 1:09 in time after one. Retherford chose down to start the second period and worked his way to a reversal and a 6-1 lead with 1:27. He then turned Fahy for three back points to lead 9-1. After another ride out, Retherford led 9-1 with 2:27 in time after two period. Fahy chose down to start the third and Retherford let him out to a 9-2 score. He swiftly moved in on another single to up his lead to 11-2 with 1:32 on the clock. Retherford reset himself, controlled Fahy's legs and turned him for three more back points to lead 14-2 with a clinched riding time point. Fahy escaped as time wound down and Retherford walked away with a convincing 15-3 major, including 3:58 in riding time. 149: Red-shirt freshman Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.) met No. 19 Caleb Ervin at 149. Beitz grabbed Ervin's ankle and worked his way into a scramble that ended with a takedown at the 1:40 mark. Ervin escaped to a 2-1 score and action resumed in the middle of the mat. Continuing to pressure the ranked Illini, Beitz once again gained control of Ervin's right leg but this time Ervin was able to force a stalemate with :20 on the clock. Trailing 2-1, Ervin chose down to start the second period but Beitz was strong on top, working the Illini long enough to build up his riding time edge to 1:13 before Ervin escaped to a 2-2 score with 1:10 on the clock. Beitz nearly scored again with :10 left with a low single, but Ervin was able to kill the clock and the match moved to the third tied 2-2. Beitz chose down to start the third period but Ervin was able to control the action for a minute by holding on to Beitz ankle. A reset was called with :56 on the clock and Ervin was hit for a stall with :40 on the clock. Beitz quickly countered after a reset and worked his way deftly around Ervin for a reversal and a 4-2 lead at the :20 mark. Beitz then rode Ervin out and posted a 4-2 with over the ranked Illini. 157: Junior Dylan Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.), ranked No. 4, took on No. 12 Zac Brunson at 157. Alton, wrestling in only his second dual this year, and Brunson battled evenly for over 2:00 with neither wrestler finding an opening to score. Alton took a solid shot at the :25 mark, nearly took Brunson to his back and then held on for the takedown and a 2-0 lead after one period. Brunson chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 2-1 Alton lead. Alton used a textbook high single to drive through for another takedown and a 4-2 lead after a quick Brunson escape. The Alton takedown was the period's only offense and the Nittany Lion junior carried that lead into the third. Alton chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 5-2 lead. Brunson tried to get in on a high single but Alton was able to work his way out of bounds and maintain position and a 5-2 lead with 1:10 on the clock. The duo traded shots for the next :40 with neither man connecting. Alton tried to score on a late single leg but time ran out and Alton posted the 5-2 win. 165: Senior David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), ranked No. 1 at 165, took to the mat against No. 12 Jackson Morse. Morse got in on a high single leg but Taylor quickly wrapped him up to force a stalemate at the 2:20 mark. Taylor patiently waited for his offense to connect and came through with a nice low shot and takedown with 1:20 left in the opening period. Taylor then kept control of the ranked Illini, working for a tilt. He picked up three near fall points with just :15 left and rolled into the first period with a 5-0 lead and 1:21 in riding time. Morse chose down to start the second period, quickly escaped and then surprised Taylor with a takedown to cut Taylor's lead to 5-3. A reset was called with :57 on the clock but Taylor could not work his way free from Morse's strong ride. Morse worked the clock down to zeroes. Leading 5-3, Taylor chose down to start the third period and steadily worked his way to a reversal and a 7-3 lead with 1:20 on the clock. It was Taylor's turn to dominate the action from the top, nearly turning Morse for a pin before action was stopped for potentially dangerous. Taylor picked up two more back points, then another two as time expired and posted the tough 11-3 major decision. 174: Junior Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, met veteran Illini senior Tony Dallago. The duo traded shots and near-scoring scrambles for over 2:00 with neither wrestler able finish off any of the opening salvos. After a reset at 1:00, Brown bulled through a high double and steadily worked his way to a takedown and a 2-0 lead with :22 left in a spirited opening period. Dallago escaped but Brown quickly caught the Illini senior, took him to his back and nearly pinned him. The late five-point move gave Brown a 7-1 lead after the opening period. Brown chose down to start the second and Dallago locked his hands, giving Brown an 8-1 lead. Delgado maintained control, however, until the :55 mark when Brown escaped to a 9-1 lead. Dallago got called for a stall with :10 on the clock and Brown furiously worked for a takedown, but time ran out and the late score did not count, giving Brown a 9-1 lead after two. Dallago chose down to start the third period and Brown controlled the action from the top position until Dallago escaped at the 1:20 mark. But Brown continued to pour on the offense, rolling through another takedown to lead 11-2 with 1:10 left. He reset on his knees and began trying to lock up a cradle with :50 on the clock. No near fall points were given and Brown maintained the lead at the :10 mark. A short ride out and 1:15 in riding time gave Brown the 12-2 major. 184: Senior Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 184, faced off with Illini freshman Nikko Reyes. Ruth quickly took the Illini freshman down and then began working for an opportunity to turn the Illini for back points. Ruth controlled the action for all but :10 and then added one more takedown to lead 4-1 after one period. Reyes chose down to start the second period and Ruth cut him loose at the 1:40 mark, still with 2:59 in riding time. The duo battled evenly for the rest of the period and Ruth led 4-2 after two. Ruth chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 5-2 lead. The Lion then worked Reyes to the mat and stepped behind him for a takedown and a 7-2 lead with 1:25 on the clock. With the riding time point assured, Ruth picked up another point on stalling and led 8-3 after cutting Reyes loose with :50 on the clock. Ruth circled around for a takedown with :30 on the clock and took a 10-3 lead. Ruth turned Reyes for three late back points and rolled to the 14-3 major with 4:04 in riding time. 197: Sophomore Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 7 nationally, took on Jeff Koepke at 197. McIntosh took multiple shots out of the gates, connecting on this third with 1:15 left to lead 2-1 in the opening stanza. Koepke got hit for a first stall with 1:00 on the clock and action resumed in the center circle. Leading 2-1 after one, McIntosh chose down to start the second and quickly escaped to a 3-1 lead. McIntosh kept Koepke backing up and took a 4-1 lead on a stall point. A third stall meant another point and McIntosh led 5-1 with :45 left. The Lion then got in on a low single and notched a takedown to lead 7-2 with :30 on the clock after a Koepke escape. McIntosh led 7-2 after two and Koepke chose down to start the third. A Koepke escape cut the lead to 7-3 and McIntosh continued to pressure the Illini. The Lion sophomore connected with Koepke's ankle, pulled his head down to the mat and added a final takedown. With 1:03 in riding time, McIntosh posted the 10-3 decision. 285: Jon Gingrich (Wingate, Pa.) stepped up for Penn State and took on Illinois' Chris Lopez. The duo battled evenly for the opening over two minutes and then Gingrich got on the board with a solid low double, getting the takedown and taking a 2-0 lead with :51 on the clock. The Lion junior, making his second dual meet appearance of the year, then rode Lopez out to lead 2-0 after one. Lopez chose down to start the second stanza but Gingrich was able to break the Illini down and build up a sizeable riding time edge while looking for a turning combination. Gingrich maintained control for the entire period and, while not turning Lopez, entered the third period with a 2-0 lead and 2:51 in riding time. Gingrich chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. Gingrich kept Lopez backing up, looking for offense and worked his way through a high double with :40 left to lead 5-0. Gingrich cut Lopez loose and quickly began looking for another takedown. Lopez backed out of the circle and the clock hit zeroes, giving Gingrich the 6-1 victory.
