With the win, Mizzou extends its dual win streak to 37 consecutive victories. The No. 19-ranked Chippewas was Mizzou's 14th win over a ranked opponent during the streak. Starting off the dual for the Tigers was redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Barlow McGhee (Rock Island, Ill.), who earned a 9-4 decision win over Brent Fleetwood, who enter the match ranked No. 16. The next two Mizzou grapplers needed extra time to secure wins. Redshirt junior 133-pounder Zach Synon (Cary, Ill.) and redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.) each scored escapes in overtime to earn one-points wins. Synon defeated Corey Keener, 5-4, while Manley took down No. 15-ranked Zach Horan. Next, redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) earned the Tigers fourth consecutive win to start the dual, 5-4, over No. 10 Colin Heffernan. The win extended Mizzou's lead to 12-0. After redshirt senior 157-pounder Le'Roy Barnes (Belton, Mo.) came up short of an upset over No. 8-ranked Lucas Smith, Lewis took to the mat for the Tigers against Jordan Atineza. Lewis dominated Atienza for the duration of the match, earning a four-point near-fall on his way to an 11-0 major decision. In the 184-pound match, Miklus faced off against Jordan Ellingwood. Miklus, who entered the match undefeated in dual competition, wasted no time scoring bonus points for the seventh time in his ninth dual match of the season, scoring a fall near the end of the first period. Miklus has now accounted for 44 dual points this season to lead the Tigers. At 197-pounds, Cox fell just short of a technical fall, earning a 16-3 major decision over Jackson Lewis. Cox is second on the team in dual points, with 35 points now to his name. Mizzou will face another ranked team in its next contest, Friday Jan. 22 at No. 5-ranked Oklahoma State. 2. GREELEY, Colo. -- North Dakota State University won five of the last six matches including three pins to defeat the University of Northern Colorado 29-13 in a Big 12 Conference match Sunday, Jan. 17, at Butler-Hancock Hall. North Dakota State (1-4, 1-0 Big 12) is scheduled to host Air Force (5-2, 0-1 Big 12) at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. Trailing 9-5 after four matches, North Dakota State 157-pound sophomore Kyle Gliva (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley H.S.) started the Bison blitz by recording an exhausting four-period sudden victory-2 overtime win over Joe Grable. Grable led 3-2 after the first period, but Gliva did the only scoring in the second with an escape. Grable gained an escape for a 4-3 lead early in the third period, but Gliva rallied with a takedown with 48-seconds left for a 5-4 advantage. Grable was able to escape with 24-seconds remaining to force overtime. The pair went scoreless through the first three OT sessions, but Gliva recorded a takedown with 23-seconds left in the second sudden victory period for the win and trim match deficit to 9-8. Gliva improved to 18-8 overall and 1-1 in duals. North Dakota State 165-pound sophomore Grant Nehring (Kimball, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo H.S.) wasted little time in putting the Bison ahead 14-9 in the dual. Nehring led 3-2 and turned over Keilan Torres for the pin at 55-seconds. Nehring now 3-6 overall and 2-2 in duals has gained all three wins by pin. NDSU 174-pound redshirt freshman Blake Thompson (Clovis, Calif./Utah Valley) trailed UNC's Tanner Davis 1-0 after two periods, but Thompson tied the score at 1-1 early in the third and recorded a takedown with 35-seconds remaing for a 3-1 decision. Thompson notched his first dual win in four tries and stands at 4-11 overall. Seventh-ranked 184-pound senior Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton H.S.) recorded his team-leading seventh pin of the season at 2:23 over Horacio Vialpando and widened the Bison lead to 23-9. Zillmer improved to 23-3 overall and 5-0 in duals this season. He extended his dual winning streak to 21 matches. Northern Colorado's 20th-ranked 197-pounder Trent Noon stopped the NDSU run with a 14-3 decision over Logan Paxton. However, NDSU 285-pound junior Ben Tynan (Kennewick, Wash./Highline College) ended things on a high note with a fall at 2:35 over Brian Macchione. Tynan trailed Macchione 4-3 early, but gained a reversal to set up the pin. Tynan improved to 15-8 overall and 4-1 in duals. North Dakota State's 16th-ranked 125-pounder Josh Rodriguez (Guadalupe, Calif./Righetti H.S.) opened the dual with a punishing 18-3 tech fall over Jesse Reed. Rodriguez led 8-1 after one, extended the lead to 14-3 in the second. Rodriguez improved to 25-7 overall and 4-1 in duals. Northern Colorado (1-4, 0-3 Big 12) then reeled off three straight wins as Rico Montoya defeated Nico Colunga 14-9 at 133 pounds, Colton Orrino topped Tommy Walton 10-5 at 141, and Timmy Box downed Clay Ream 9-6 at 149 pounds to take a 9-5 lead. 3. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Five bonus point victories and an upset by Doug Welch highlighted No. 20 Purdue's 32-6 win over Maryland on Sunday inside Holloway Gymnasium. The Boilermakers (7-2, 2-1 B1G) registered three major decisions, a technical fall and had a pin at 197 pounds. The loss was the second of the weekend for the Terrapins, who slip to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten Conference. “I thought we completed pretty well across the board through the entire match,” Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. “I would like to see [Alex] Griffin get started a little earlier and put himself on top in the first period. He was a little conservative, but he got out there and got the nearfall. “There was a good attitude and work ethic this week and they are competing well,” Ersland said. “It is not where we want to be but we are working hard and taking steps in the right direction.” A six-point move in the first period set D. Welch up for a 10-5 upset of Maryland's 19th-ranked 157-pounder Lou Mascola. The Terp had the first takedown, but D. Welch reversed Mascola and nearly pinned him as the opening stanza came to a close. “He had the takedown so I had to keep working,” D. Welch said. “My initial thing was to get out, to get an escape. He was in a crab position; we work that position a lot, so I just turned my hips out and got out, and got him on his back for the reversal and back points.” D. Welch (10-6) escaped once in the second and third periods before closing out the bout with a takedown. Mascola becomes the second ranked opponent the Boilermaker has defeated this season. “[The win] is good; it is about coming out here and competing every day and believing in the system,” D. Welch said. The dual began with the first of three major decisions for Purdue by way of Ben Thornton's 18-6 showing vs. Michael Beck. Thornton scored seven takedowns, a two-point nearfall, an escape and racked up 3:34 of riding time for his second major of the season. With the win, the redshirt freshman moves his record to 15-8. At 149, Alex Griffin's seven-point third period lifted him to a 9-1 major decision over Wade. The redshirt junior (10-4) tallied a two-point nearfall in the second and a four-point nearfall in the third after escaping and taking Hodges down. Coming out of the break at 165, sixth-ranked Chad Welch beat Maryland's Brendan Burnham for a second time in less than three weeks with a 14-3 major decision. C. Welch (21-3) scored offensively and defensively en route to his 21st win while posting back-to-back major decisions. Jacob Morrissey's first period was scoreless with Terp 174-pounder Derrick Evanovich, but it was a strong second period after an escape that lifted him to a 15-0 technical fall in 7:00. Morrissey worked the four-point nearfall twice, almost pinning him on both occasions, to build an 11-0 lead. He added a takedown in the third and received a point for a second stalling call on Evanovich. Riding time (2:11) earned the 15th point of the bout for the first tech fall of his redshirt sophomore season and improving to 11-8. Maryland's Garrett Wesneski took bottom in the second and Drake Stein quickly found the cradle, pinning Wesneski seconds later at the 3:14 mark at 197. The redshirt senior is now has 16 pins in his career and he is one away from earning a spot on Purdue's career fall list. Danny Sabatello (12-9) and Tanner Lynde (7-7) also provided Purdue with decisions at 141 and 184 pounds, respectively. The two wins for the Terps came via decision at 133 and 285. It will be another two-dual weekend for the Boilermakers in their next outing. They'll travel to No. 2 Iowa for a Friday dual at 9 p.m. ET. From there they will head north for a Sunday showdown at Minnesota starting at 1 p.m. #BoilerNotes • The win is the first for Purdue in three meetings vs. Maryland … it was the first time the two teams met as Big Ten Conference opponents. • Purdue held a 19-7 takedown advantage and scored first in six of the bouts … the Boilermakers tallied 30 back points with a trio of two-point nearfalls and six four-point nearfalls … the five bonus point wins ties a season high in a dual … they won five bouts with bonus points at Bloomsburg (11/20). • Purdue has now put 30-or more points on the board in six of its nine duals … the last time the Boilermakers put 30-or more points on the board in a Big Ten Conference dual was Feb. 20, 2015, when they beat Indiana 30-9 … Purdue has now had at least one bonus point victory in six of its nine duals. • Fifteen of Chad Welch's 21 wins have been with bonus points (7 MD, 2TF, 6 F) … he now has 32 career victories resulting in bonus points (11 MD, 5 TF, 16 F). • Alex Griffin registered the 10th major decision of his career … 54 percent of his 41 career wins have resulted in bonus points (10 MD, 8 TF, 4 F). • C. 4. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Kyle Snyder is back -- in a big way. The sophomore who recently decided to forgo his Olympic redshirt and return to the Buckeyes' lineup made his 2016 debut on Sunday at St. John Arena with no shortage of drama. With the team score tied at 17 entering the duals final match, Snyder rolled to a 20-9 major decision over Nebraska's Colin Jensen at 285 to give No. 11 Ohio State a 21-17 triumph over the seventh-ranked Cornhuskers. THE SHORT STORY Ohio State won six of 10 matches -- three via bonus points -- including the most important one of all: the winner-take-all bout at 285 pounds. Nathan Tomasello also rolled to a major decision at 125 pounds while Micah Jordan dispatched Anthony Abidin by major decision at 141 pounds. In one of the tightest contests of the afternoon, Jake Ryan outlasted Tyler Berger in overtime, 6-4, while Myles Martin picked up his 20th win of the year, a 7-4 decision over Micah Barnes. STARS OF THE NIGHT Kyle Snyder: Major decision at 285 to clinch Ohio State's team win. Jake Ryan: Overtime decision over No. 17 Tyler Berger. Win gave Ohio State a 14-5 lead in the dual Micah Jordan: Improved to 15-1 on the year with a 13-4 major decision. Nathan Tomasello: Won his 30th consecutive match. Is 12-0 this season. SNYDER PUTS ONE IN THE WIN COLUMN Kyle Snyder, who had not wrestled in a collegiate match since last March's NCAA final at 197 pounds, made his 2015-16 debut on the same afternoon a banner commemorating his World Championship this past fall was unveiled from the rafters of St. John Arena. Now wrestling at 285 pounds, Snyder fell behind Jenson 2-0 on a takedown midway through the first period, but from there he dominated. He took Jensen down twice in the period to 5-3 and then unleased his offense in the second period, scoring a reversal and three takedowns for a 13-6 lead. Three more takedowns and a riding time bonus point made the final score 20-9. BUCKEYES WIN THE FIRST THREE Ohio State got off to a fast start, winning each of the three matches -- two via bonus points. Nathan Tomasello was his usual self, securing a 16-5 major decision over ninth-ranked Tim Lambert. Now a winner of 30 straight matches dating back to last season, Tomasello scored seven takedowns and had 1:46 in riding time. Next up was Johnni DiJulius (133 lbs.), who avenged a loss last year to Eric Montoya at the NCAA Championships by defeating Montoya 9-4 on the strength of a first-period takedown and four-point near-fall in the second period. DiJulius also racked up nearly 2:00 of riding time. Micah Jordan continued his stellar redshirt freshman campaign with his major decision over Anthony Abidin at 141 pounds, giving the Buckeyes a 11-0 lead just three bouts in. Jordan took control in the second period with five points -- an escape, takedown and two-point near fall. RYAN WINS A THRILLER Jake Ryan won a key swing match in the dual when he defeated 17th-ranked Tyler Berger in overtime, 6-4. Tied a 1-1 entering sudden victory OT, neither wrestler could get a takedown, leading to a pair of 30 second OT periods. Near the end of the first 30 seconds, Ryan scored a takedown and reversal on a flurry of scrambles to take a 6-1 lead. He would need every one of those points, as Berger closed to within 6-4 late in the final 30 second period, but Ryan held him off for his 12th win of the year. That decision gave Ohio State a 14-5 lead in the dual. MARTIN SWINGS MOMENTIUM BACK TO OSU Myles Martin (20-3) won another key swing match at 174 lbs. when he topped 14th-ranked Micah Barnes, 7-4. Martin, ranked 15th nationally and making just his third start of the year, scored a takedown in each of the first two periods and also accumulated well over 2:00 of riding time. He scored a takedown with 57 seconds left in the second period to break a 2-2 tie and then had two escapes in the third period to maintain his lead. BACK UPS STEP UP Down three starters, Ohio State's backups battled highlight-ranked opponents at 149 and 197 pounds. Sal Marandino lost by tech fall to fifth-ranked Jake Suelfohn (149) while Josh Fox hung with 16th-ranked Aaron Studebaker (197), losing 3-0. It was the eighth different lineup Ohio State has used in eight duals this year. DID YOU KNOW Sunday's win was the 750th in the 95-year history over wrestling at Ohio State (750-511-2). It is also head coach tom Ryan's 50th triumph against Big Ten competition. In his 10th season, Ryan is 50-27 against conferences foes and 119-44 overall. NEXT UP Ohio State returns to the mat next Sunday, Jan. 24, when it travels to Walsh Jesuit High School in Cleveland to tangle with Michigan State. The match will serve as a homecoming for redshirt senior Johnni DiJulius, a 2011 graduate of Walsh Jesuit. 5. Sunday's dual between No. 21 Minnesota and No. 8 Rutgers began at 197 pounds, putting the Gophers' highest-ranked wrestler on the mat from the outset and No. 4 Brett Pfarr delivered. His technical fall gave the Gophers an early five-point lead and the bonus points from that victory proved critical as the Gophers upset the Scarlet Knights, 17-16, at the Sports Pavilion. "It really was a great team effort. We talked about it before the match even started and said 'This is a great dual team [and] on paper their picked to win a majority of the matches,' but we believed we were capable of winning all 10 [matches]," said head assistant coach Brandon Eggum. "To win matches like this, you need someone to step up and pull a big win. We had a handful of guys step up and get wins." The tight score reflected a dual that was close throughout. The two teams split 10 matches, but Pfarr's tech fall to kick off the dual was the only bonus point win until the afternoon's final match. The next eight contests all ended in decisions. Rutgers eroded Minnesota's lead and hopped in front by winning three straight matches on the heels of that opening bout, starting with an upset for No. 16 Billy Smith over No. 7 Michael Kroells at 285 pounds. Neither wrestler earned a takedown in the match and it headed to overtime tied at one. Smith escaped Kroells after Kroells had failed to do the same in the first half of the tiebreakers, giving the Rutgers heavyweight a 2-1 win. A last-second takedown that required video confirmation gave Sean McCabe a 7-6 win over Skyler Petry at 125 pounds, and No. 18 Anthony Giraldo knocked off Sam Brancale, 3-1, in their 133-pound contest. The Gophers closed to within one point at the halftime intermission thanks to a strong showing from No. 10 Tommy Thorn. After a scoreless first period with No. 4 Anthony Ashnault, Thorn rode out the entire second period and added a four-point tilt to take command of the match. A late escape from Ashnault spared him a major-decision loss as Thorn finished off a dominant 8-1 upset. Ashnault is now the highest-ranked wrestler that Thorn, a redshirt freshman, has defeated in his Gopher career. Coming out of halftime, the Gophers picked up back-to-back wins, first from No. 9 Jake Short, who handled Tyson Dippery in a 6-1 decision at 149 pounds, then from Brandon Kingsley, who knocked off John Van Brill, 4-2. Those victories re-established the five-point lead Minnesota took after the night's first match. A whacky seven minutes at 165 pounds brought Rutgers to within two points in the team score, as No. 10 Anthony Perrotti came back in the third period to knock off Brandon Krone, 8-6. Krone led at the end of both the first and second periods, helped by three penalty points on Perrotti (stalling, cautions and illegal hold), but Perrotti proved too much with a late takedown to win. Nick Wanzek's victory over Phil Bakuckas at 174 pounds positioned the Gophers to win the dual with just one match remaining. The match was tight throughout - Wanzek led by one after both the first and second periods - but takedowns for Wanzek in the final 30 seconds of each period helped him to an 8-4 victory and once again put the Gophers in front by five points. The night ended with Nicholas Gravina winning an 11-3 major decision over Chris Pfarr, but the four points from the win were too little for Rutgers with no matches left on Sunday's card. Sunday's win brings the Gophers back to .500 on the season, both overall (6-6) and in Big Ten competition (2-2). The victory provides Minnesota with its first win over a top-10 team this season (had been 0-3 previously) and its first since last January when the Gophers knocked off then-No. 6 Penn State in State College by the exact same score, 17-16. Minnesota returns to action a week from today when the Gophers host Purdue at the Sports Pavilion. That match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (Central) start and will be available live on BTN Plus. 6. BOISE, Idaho -- The Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers used a major decision and pin in the first two matches on their way to a 33-6 win over Boise State on Sunday afternoon in Bronco Gymnasium in Boise, Idaho. True freshman Drake Foster, a native of Post Falls, Idaho, earned his first dual win as a Cowboy in the opening match of the dual. The Cowboys won eight-of-the-10 matches on the afternoon. UW also recorded bonus points in five of the wins. “We were an entirely different team out there today and it shows how having a great mindset makes a difference,” UW head coach Mark Branch. “We wrestled with a lot more aggression and confidence, I really like what I saw. Hopefully this is something we build on and we hold on to it for the rest of the season.” Foster got the Pokes off to a quick start with his 16-8 major decision victory over Josh Newberg at 133 pounds. Foster opened the match with a takedown and a nearfall to lead 7-4 after the first period. He continued to attack in the match and added a takedown late to earn the major decision. “Drake (Foster) wrestled tough and threw the kid to his back right away and settled in,” Branch said. “He panicked a little bit, but he kept wrestling and stretched it out and got the major decision. We talk about wrestling for our team and he went out and did that.” Sophomore Bryce Meredith followed Foster's lead earning a pin 1:27 into his match against Jake Valverde. After a takedown to start the match Meredith earned a two-point nearfall before earning the pin. It was his fifth dual win with bonus points this season. After Geordan Martinez got Boise State on the board with an 11-6 decision over UW redshirt freshman Branson Ashworth, Wyoming's Archie Colgan moved to 6-1 in duals with a 3-2 decision over Chris Castillo. Colgan earned two points with a takedown in the first period and added an escape before walking out with the win. Sophomore Chaz Polson added a win at 165 pounds with a 9-5 decision over Taylor West to extend the Pokes' dual lead to 16-3. Polson used a reversal and a three-point nearfall in the second period to earn his first dual win of the season. After senior Jace Jensen fell by decision to Austin Dewey by a tally of 4-1, Wyoming's Benjamin Stroh won by major decision at 184 pounds over Keavon Buckley by a mark of 12-3. Stroh recorded three takedowns in the third and final period and accumulated over three minutes of riding time for the win. 7. NORFOLK, Va. -- Panthers on the UNI wrestling team knocked off a top-10 opponent and avenged a loss earlier in the year to hand Old Dominion its first MAC loss of the season, 24-12. UNI got its second MAC win to improve to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. Old Dominion fell to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the MAC. UNI got wins from: No. 17 Josh Alber at 133 pounds Trevor Jauch at 141 pounds Bryce Steiert at 157 pounds No. 8 Cooper Moore at 165 pounds Kyle Lux at 174 pounds Jared Bartel at 197 pounds No. 15 Blaize Cabell at heavyweight After wrestling at 149 pounds in Friday's Virginia Tech dual, Jauch returned to the lineup at 141 pounds as the lead-off wrestler, getting his second top-15 upset of the year. Earlier in the season, Jauch pinned No. 15 Jamel Hudson of Hofstra. It was a scoreless first period. Jauch gave up a stall point nearly midway through the second period and racked up about a minute of riding time before releasing No. 9 Chris Mecate. Jauch got a takedown but gave up a reversal just as the second period expired. The third period started in Mecate's favor, 3-2 with the wrestlers starting neutral. With 15 seconds left in the match, Jauch got the takedown and was awarded riding time to win 5-3. The Panthers had the dual win locked up by the time Alber stepped on the mat for the final match at 133 pounds. It was a rematch from the Midlands Championships where No. 14 Emilio Saavedra won the title in a second sudden victory. The win swapped Alber with Saavedra in the latest MAC rankings. This time it was Alber who would get the win. After a scoreless first period, Alber got an escape in the second period and secured a riding time point in the third to win 2-0. It was Alber's fourth win over a top-20 opponent this year. He has beaten then-ranked No. 19 Anthony Giraldo of Rutgers two times and then-ranked No. 12 Josh Martinez of Air Force. MATCHES IN ORDER Jauch's win over Mecate at 141 pounds gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead, but a tech fall loss at 149 pounds put UNI back 5-3 when Bryce Steiert took the mat at 157 pounds. Two minutes into the first period, Steiert got on the board with a takedown against senior Devin Geoghegan and gave up an escape. Steiert got an escape and a point for an illegal move by Geoghegan in the second to keep the 4-1 lead to start the third period. Geoghegan got an escape before Steiert could secure riding time. Steiert went on to win 4-2 win. The 165-pound match was tied up 4-4 to start the third when No. 8 Cooper Moore turned on the offense, getting two takedowns and releasing Seldon Wright early for the escapes. He grabbed another takedown late in the third and earned an extra point for riding time to win 11-6. Kyle Lux was reversed midway through the second period and got an early escape, but he trailed Brooks Climmons 2-1 to start the third. Lux tied it up in the third to push the match into tiebreakers. After a scoreless sudden victory, Lux started down and got the reversal to go up 4-2. Lux was able to keep Climmons down to secure the decision. All-American No. 6 Jack Dechow earned bonus points for Old Dominion to narrow the team score. UNI continued to lead 12-9. Jared Bartel turned it on in the final seconds of the match to take Austin Coburn straight to his back. His nearfall points gave him the 7-1 decision to push the team score to 15-9 for UNI. Blaize Cabell racked up four takedowns before getting his second fall of the year. He pinned Andrew Snyder in 4 minutes, 35 seconds. The bonus points pushed the team score to 21-9. ODU's Brandon Jeske's win at 125 pounds wasn't enough to give the Monarchs a chance to win the dual. 10. NEW YORK -- Columbia needed every point possible to get by Brown in an EIWA wrestling dual, as the Lions topped the Bears, 16-15. Columbia won on criteria, having a 47-46 edge in total match points to move to 5-1 in duals on the season. The win was the third of the weekend for the Lions, who topped Buffalo (18-15) and Binghamton (18-17) yesterday. After the Bears came away with wins in the first two matches of the day, Joe Moita got the Lions on the board with a 3-0 win over Charlie Banaszak. Brown would surge ahead to a 12-3 lead with victories in the 149 and 157-pound bouts, before Tyrel White came away with a sudden victory win. Tied 1-1 after regulation, John Viruet was hit with his second stalling call to give the Columbia sophomore a 165-pound win. At 174, Zack Hernandez was close to bonus points, coming away with a 10-4 win over Andrew LaBrie. Going into the 184-pound match, Columbia trailed 12-9, but a last second takedown by Austin Pfarr gave Brown three more team points, as Pfarr was able to comeback to beat Mike Fetchet, 5-4. With two matches remaining, the Lions trailed 15-9, and needed two wins just to have a chance for a team victory on criteria. Troy Hembury and Garrett Ryan were able to deliver, as Hembury topped Gus Marker, 10-6, and Ryan came away with a 7-3 win over Joshua Durso-Finley. With no bonus points on either side during the 5-5 match split, the Lions were awarded one additional team point with a 47-46 edge in total points. 11. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Drexel wrestling team swept the last five matches to defeat American, 21-16, on Sunday afternoon. Along with these victories, No. 13 Matthew Cimato also earned his 23rd win of the season in the outing and remains undefeated in dual competition with a perfect 10-0 record. American secured the first points of the day as its eighth-ranked David Terao earned a win-by-fall over Zack Fuentes at 125 pounds. The Eagles then extended their lead to 9-0 as Esteban Gomez-Rivera earned a 9-5 decision over Franco Ferraina at 133. In the 141 match, Kevin Devoy Jr. took American's Tyler Scotton to overtime as the score was knotted at 1-1 as time expired in regulation. Neither wrestler was able to score in the first sudden victory period, but escapes from both wrestlers in the first tie breaker would advance the match all the way to a second tie breaker round. Devoy had a 3-2 advantage going into the second period of TB2, but an escape from Scotton evened the score and a penalty against Devoy would ultimately give the match and a 12-0 lead to American. Drexel's first points of the day came as Cimato earned a 14-1 major decision over the Eagles' Cole Moseley at 149. American would take the 157 match with a major from the tenth-ranked John Boyle to make the score 16-4 halfway through the dual. However, the Dragons stepped up their game and won out the last five matches to go on to victory. Drexel's surge started as Austin Rose took an 11-4 decision from American's Mitchell Wightman at 165. Then Nick Elmer edged Jason Grimes by a 5-4 decision in the 174 match and Stephen Loiseau followed with a 15-0 technical fall over American's Joe Salvi. Trailing 16-15 with two matches to go, Nezar Haddad picked up an 8-6 victory to give the Dragons their first lead of the day, 18-16. A 2-0 win from Joey Goodhart in the heavyweight match solidified Drexel's 21-16 victory and allowed the Dragons to get a split of their first full weekend over conference competition. With the win Drexel improves to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in conference action while the Eagles move to 4-3 overall and 1-2 against EIWA opponents. The Dragons return to action on Friday as they open their home schedule by hosting EIWA opponent Binghamton at the Daskalakis Athletic Center for Spirit Night. 12. EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Dakota Leach's second-period pin at 133 pounds gave SIUE wrestling an early lead as the Cougars clipped The Citadel 18-16 Sunday in a Southern Conference dual at the Vadalabene Center. It was SIUE's first-ever victory over The Citadel in four meetings against the Bulldogs. SIUE improved to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the SoCon. The Citadel, which was ranked third in the SoCon preseason poll, fell to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the SoCon. "It was nice to get a win for our team," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "We had a really close dual last night with Northern Illinois but just came up on the wrong end. Today for our guys to get that first SoCon win, that's really going to build some momentum towards the end of the year." Leach pulled out a pin in 3 minutes, 56 seconds over The Citadel's Caleb Smith. After being taken down in the first period, Smith chose the bottom position in the second period only to be caught in a cradle. "He got the crowd back into it," said Spates. "I think that was a big shift in the momentum." SIUE's John Fahy also earned a huge victory at 149 pounds. Fahy bested three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time defending Southern Conference champion Matthew Frisch with a 6-4 sudden victory. Fahy gained a takedown in the first overtime period. Spates said Fahy has been defeating the wrestlers he has supposed to defeat but hadn't picked up wins against wrestlers ranked higher. After the past two days, Spates noted he hopes this improves Fahy's standing. The Cougars also picked up three straight wins from Nate Higgins (165), Clayton Bass (174) and Derek Nagel (184) for the team victory. "We have Higgins up a weight at 165 now, and I think that's a good adjustment for him," said Spates. The Cougars have four dual meets planned for next week. SIUE travels to Brookings, South Dakota, for Friday duals against Cal State Bakersfield and South Dakota State. Next Sunday, SIUE face SoCon rival Davidson and Grand Canyon at the Vadalabene Center. 13. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Fighting Illini got one of the nation's top wrestlers back this afternoon and used it to propel the team to a 32-10 victory over Michigan State. Brunson, the team's leader in pins, had missed four straight matches due to injury. As a team, the Illini scored bonus points in six matches, winning seven of the ten bouts this afternoon. With the win, Illinois improves to 2-3 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State drops to 0-4. Beginning the day at 174 pounds, Zac Brunson wasted no time in getting back into the groove he had established before missing the past four matches due to injury. In the first period, Brunson used a takedown and a four-point near fall to take an early 6-0 lead. Brunson escalated the action in period two, scoring 12 points to earn a technical fall without surrendering a point. The win was Brunson's 14th of the season and was his third tech fall of the season. Jeff Koepke doubled the early advantage with a 26-11 technical fall at 184 pounds. The major blow came in the third period when Koepke used a four-point near fall with a minute remaining that set him up for the technical fall with two more takedowns. Michigan State got on the board at 197 pounds when Jacob Cooper out-dueled Illinois' Andre Lee. Lee opened up a 2-0 lead, and stretched it to 4-1, but a four-point near fall by Cooper gave the Spartan the lead for good, holding on for the 9-6 win, cutting the Illini lead to 10-3. However, the seven=point deficit would be as close as the Spartans would come to Illini on the afternoon. At heavyweight, Brooks Black added the third bonus point victory in the first four matches with a 10-2 tally against Dimitrus Renfroe, using three takedowns 3:58 of riding time in route to the win. The most competitive match of the day came at 125 pounds between Francis Edelen and Michigan State's Mitch Rogaliner. The pair remained knotted 2-2 after the first period, but Rogaliner gained the lead with a takedown in period two to lead 4-3 entering the final two minutes. Battling back-and-forth, Edelen led 7-6 with under ten seconds remaining after two takedowns. However, Rogaliner used a last-ditch effort to get a reversal and win the bout 8-7. Coming out of the intermission with a 14-6 advantage, the Fighting Illini put the Spartans away with bonus points at 133, 157, and 165 pounds. The Illini began the second half of the match with Zane Richards' fourth pin of the season, using just 3:35 to get the fall over Garth Yenter. The win moves him to 18-0 on the season and gives him 60 dual points for the season. Michigan State would earn their final, and biggest, victory of the day at 141 pounds. Javier Gasca used early scoring to put Brock Ervin on his heels and earning a 12-3 major decision over Ervin. The loss snapped Ervin's two-game winning streak started last Sunday at Northern Illinois. The Illini grapplers reeled off 12 straight points in the final three bouts to finish of the Spartans, beginning with a 6-3 decision by Kyle Langenderfer over Kaelan Richards. The victory by Langenderfer extended the Illini lead to 23-10, securing the Orange and Blue's first Big Ten victory of 2016. Isaiah Martinez and Steven Rodrigues added style points to the win with bonus points in both duals. Martinez reeled in his 15th technical fall of the season with a 20-5 score, including two four-point near falls, that pushes his record to 19-0 and his winning streak to 61. The Illini romp concluded with Steven Rodrigues' team-high ninth major decision, beating Dean Vettese 20-9. The 32-10 victory gave the Illini their biggest win of the season since defeating Drexel 31-9 In New York on November 29. "I felt good," said Martinez. "It's always good to get the tech fall. I was actually going for the fall, but I got him on his back and he just spun out too hard and I wasn't able to hold him there. But, I'm happy. Any time I can get a bonus point victory, looks good on the resume." The Fighting Illini return home for their only match of the week when they meet top-ranked Penn State at 3 p.m. on the mat at Huff Hall on Saturday, January 23. The match against the nation's top-ranked team will be broadcasted live on Big Ten Network. Fans are encouraged to bring canned food for the Eastern Illinois Food Bank as part of the Hometown Heroes promotion. Illinois' starters will also be throwing out American Flag wrestling t-shirts prior to the match. He wrapped up the 6-1 decision with riding time to drop Flournoy to 21-6. Matthews was 9-0 a year ago and ranked in the top five before going down a month into the season. George Mason would win two of the first three matches to take a 7-3 lead, but it was all Edinboro after that as the Fighting Scots ran off wins in the final seven bouts. Sean Russell improved to 20-5 with an 8-1 decision over Ibrahim Banduka (14-12) at 125 lbs. Vince Rodriguez (16-6) won a 12-2 major decision over Anthony Rivera (6-8) at 133 lbs., and Tejon Anthony (15-7) followed with a 5-2 decision over Tyler Vath (7-10) at 141 lbs. Patricio Lugo, ranked 20th by InterMat, continued his impressive freshman campaign with an 18-2 technical fall (6:35) over Konbeh Koroma (10-12) at 149 lbs. While improving to 23-3, Lugo jumped out to an 8-1 lead after one period, nearly pinning Koroma in the first minute before settling for four near-fall points. All told, he had three takedowns and added another four near-fall points in the third period. Casey Fuller picked up his 20th win of the season with a 4-0 decision over Patrick Davis (9-10) at 165 lbs. Now 20-5, the redshirt senior was never seriously challenged after a takedown 11 seconds into the bout. He added an escape in the second and picked up a point for riding time. Patrick Jennings won a 10-4 decision over Ryan Forrest (7-7) at 174 lbs. to improve to 18-11. The redshirt senior led 5-1 after two periods thanks to a pair of takedowns, then added two more takedowns in the final period. Senior Vince Pickett registered the lone fall of the evening, as he needed just 1:43 to pin Cameron Houston (1-15). Pickett improved to 17-10 with his third fall of the season. Redshirt freshman Billy Miller capped the evening with a 10-3 decision over Matt Voss (17-10) at heavyweight. Now 22-5, Miller had takedowns in each of the first two periods for a 4-2 lead, then pulled away with an escape and his third and fourth takedowns in the third period. Edinboro returns to EWL action on Saturday, January 23, hosting Rider. That match is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. Results: 125 -- Sean Russell (EU) dec. 22. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Three straight wins including back-to-back pins in the final four matches helped the Navy wrestling team rally from an eight-point deficit to defeat American Friday night at Bender Arena in the nation's capital. The Midshipmen are now 7-1 on the year, including 3-1 against EIWA competition. "Tonight we found ourselves behind at the halfway point and it was a good way for these guys to learn valuable lessons about how important bonus points can be," said second-year Navy head coach Joel Sharratt. "We are still working to find the right combination at a couple of weights, but 174 through 197 is becoming an Iron Curatin that is exciting to watch." American jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage over the Midshipmen as eighth-ranked and three-time NCAA qualifier David Terao earned an 18-5 major decision over Navy sophomore Brant Leadbeter (Owings, Md.), while AU redshirt junior Esteban Gomez-Rivera picked up an 8-6 win over Navy sophomore Zack Davis (Granger, Ind.). Davis trailed 6-1 heading into the final period, but Gomez-Rivera surrendered three points to a pair of stalls and locked hands. Gomez-Rivera scored what would be the match-winning points on a takedown on the edge near the Navy bench with 45 seconds to go in the match for an 8-4 lead. Davis got the escape with 28 seconds to go and was awarded a stall point with seven seconds to go, but could not get a shot for the win. The Mids got on the scoreboard following a 3-0 victory by rookie 141-pound Nicholas Gil (Crystal Lake, Ill.) over redshirt senior Tyler Scotton, who transfered to American after Boston U. dropped its wrestling program. Navy trimmed the deficit to just one when sophomore Corey Wilding (Pittsburgh, Pa.) used a strong second half of his match to pull out a 6-3 win over Cole Moseley. Wilding trailed 2-1 heading into the second period, but earned the reversal to open the third, gave way to the optional upright position and then scored an escape to take a 5-3 lead with under 30 seconds to go in the period. He went on to ride Moseley the entire third period to get riding time and the 6-3 victory. The Eagles, however, would win the next two bouts to push their lead to 14-6, the largest of the match. Tenth-ranked John Boyle posted a 10-2 major decision over Navy sophomore 157-pound Drew Daniels (Overland Park, Kan.), while Mitchell Wightman, another Boston U. transfer, edged out Navy team captain John Keck (Wading River, N.Y.). Keck, who missed Friday night's home match due to illness, held a 3-1 advantage with under a minute left in the bout, but gave up the escape with 45 seconds to go. Wightman scored the match-winning takedown with 25 seconds left. There was some controversy, however, as the referee signaled a locked hands violation against Wightman with roughly 10 seconds remaining which would have tied the match. The referee then waved off the point and raised Wightman's hand as the winner. Navy made its move at 174 pounds where 18th-ranked Jadaen Bernstein (Glen Gardner, N.J.) outscored American's Jason Grimes 3-1 over the final four minutes and tacked on better than three minutes of riding time for a 7-3 decision. Ranked 15th nationally at 184 pounds, senior Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.) wasted little time in taking advantage of an inexperienced Joe Salvi, a redshirt freshman who is winless in dual action this season. Miller built a 4-1 advantage in the first minute and 20 seconds of the match before putting Salvi's shoulders to the mat for the fall at 1:47 and giving the Mids their first lead of the evening at 15-14. Miller, who also won by fall on Friday night, has won 11 matches this season by fall and 34 over his career. The 34 pins are the fifth most in school history, trailing fourth-place Scott Kelly (1984-88) by just one and third-place Karl Haywood (1995-99) by just two. Meanwhile, 11 single-season pins sits just outside of the top 10. Senior 197-pound Michael Woulfe (Oak Park, Ill.) was denied a pin at the buzzer in Friday night's match against Drexel, but he refused to give up in Saturday's bout against AU sophomore Jeric Kasunic. Kasunic jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the match, but was dinged for his second stall warning in the opening period to give Woulfe a point. The two continued to battle as Woulfe was able score the reversal and get Kasunic on his back for the pin at 2:40. Woulfe has also had a knack of getting wins by fall this season, earning his 12th of the year and 19 over his career. Woulfe's win, meanwhile, secured the Navy victory for the second straight match. American took the final bout of the night as freshman Jake Scanlan used his weight advantage to post a 5-2 win over second-year standout Nick Mabry (New Braunfels, Texas). The Midshipmen will return to home next Friday night when they play host to Maryland. The match will be held at Wesley Brown Field House and is on tap for a 7:30 pm start. 23. WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Army West Point wrestling team won its second Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association meet of the season and improved to .500 overall as the Black Knights downed Hofstra 33-10 at Hayes Gym in Arvin Gymnasium on Saturday. "We keep getting better, and that's a positive thing," said head coach Kevin Ward. "I still think that at certain times we need to keep putting pressure on people. I think we could've scored some more points. It was a good performance, but I think we can do better." The Black Knights came out with high intensity, taking the first 4 matches and jumping out to a 14-point lead. Starting at 165 pounds, Army alternated between decisions and major decisions for the first four matches. Andrew Mendel was able to come away with an 8-4 decision to get things started and draw even overall at 11-11 and in duals at 3-3. He was followed by senior Brian Harvey, who dominated at 174 for the entire match. The New Palestine, Ind., native scored six early points in period one with a takedown and a four-point near fall and never looked back en route to his 15th win of the season. Harvey's 13-3 major decision extended the lead to 7-0 before Samson Imonode earned his first dual victory of the season with a 13-8 decision. Bryce Barnes continued the trend, working his way to an 18-8 major decision. Hofstra utilized their size in the heavyweight match to get a key four points with a 9-1 major decision for Mike Hughes before a pin in the 125-pound match brought the score within four. Looking to answer back, freshman Austin Harry ramped up the intensity in the 133-pound match with four four-point near falls in period 1 en route to a 16-0 technical fall. Harry's win improves his record in duals to 3-2 courtesy of his second-career technical fall. Logan Everett provided the dagger for the Cadets with an unexpected pin over Jamel Hudson, who was ranked 16th by the OpenMat coming into the match. The pin was Everett's fourth of the season, coming at 3:27 to make the score 25-10. "My game plan was to just stay solid and in good positions," said Everett on facing Hudson. "I didn't get to my offense as much as I wanted to, but I was able to wear him down and open some things up for me. It was really big for me to be able to get a win like this after last week." Javier Rodriguez followed that up with a 9-7 decision before Russell Parsons Jr., who came into the match ranked 14th by InterMat, took a 16-0 technical fall to close out the meet and improving his team-leading win total to 19. The Black Knights will return to action tomorrow against Penn at 5 p.m. from Hayes Gym in Arvin Gymnasium with the team's nine seniors being recognized before the meet. 24. LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Broncs won eight of the 10 bouts to defeat Lock Haven in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Saturday. “I'm pleased with the way our kids wrestled today,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “We're still a bit banged up but the kids responded today.” For Rider (5-6, 1-1 EWL) junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) won by tech fall at 197 to give Rider an 11-3 lead. “Ryan did a good job,” Taylor said. “He continues to get better and better each week.” Wolfe improves to 2-0 in the EWL, 16-8 overall and 8-4 in duals. Senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), the 2015 EWL Champion at 133, defeated last year's EWL 141 runner-up 6-3 to give Rider a 20-3 lead. “Rob is back and we're happy about that,” Taylor said. “I was out for four or five weeks with a rib injury,” said Deutsch, a three-time NCAA qualifier. “It stinks being on the sidelines watching but I had to be 100 percent before I came back or it could have been a problem all year. I've felt better every match since I've been back.” “He beat a good kid today,” Taylor said. “He was in the weight class above me so I've never wrestled him before,” Deutsch said of his opponent, Bobby Rehm. ““He was pretty tough. Lock Haven always has had great wrestlers. The score might not show it but they wrestled hard today. It always feels great to get a conference win, especially in your home gym.” Rider senior Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) won at 165, his 54th career win but just his third win of the year (3-2, 2-1 duals). “Curt's good,” Taylor said. “We told him that we need him to not just fill in but to win, and he got a nice win today.” Rider sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won a major decision at 149 for the final score. “You could see the real Chad Walsh today,” Taylor said of his EWL champion who was ill last week while competing at the Virginia Duals. “Chad did a great job trying to go last week but that wasn't Chad. We all saw Chad today.” Walsh improved to 2-0 in the EWL, 15-5 overall. Rider sophomore Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) won to give Rider a 6-0 lead. “Stinson beat a pretty good kid,” Taylor said. Sophomore Mauro Correnti (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross), senior Zach Valcarce (Willas, NJ/Lower Cape May) and junior Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) also won for Rider. For Lock Haven (6-6, 1-1 EWL) freshman Tristan Sponseller won at 184 to improve to 19-9. All-American Dan Neff won at 149 for his 100th career win. Lock Haven placed third at the EWL Championships last year behind perennial champion Edinboro and second place Rider. Rider has now won the last five meetings with the Bald Eagles but Lock Haven leads the all-time series 16-8. Rider won 18-16 at Lock Haven last year. Each team won five bouts and four of the matches went into overtime. Rider defeated Lock Haven 23-12 in 2014 and 19-14 in 2013. Rider travels to Edinboro for an EWL dual January 23 and to Cleveland State on the 24th. “Last two years we haven't done well against those two and this year it is even tougher having both of them on the same weekend,” Deutsch said. “We have to be ready this year.” “We will try to get ready for that weekend,” Taylor said. “I believe it will be two good matches.” Results: 165: Curt Delia-R dec. 25. LANCASTER, Pa. -- No. 8 Lehigh scored bonus points in all eight of its bout wins to cruise to a 40-6 victory over Franklin & Marshall Saturday at Mayser Center. Despite missing several starters, the Mountain Hawks registered six technical falls, including the final five bouts, plus a pin and a major decision on their way to their eighth straight dual victory. Lehigh improves to 10-1 with the victory while Franklin & Marshall falls to 3-8. "We want our guys putting points on the board and we opportunities for some different guys to wrestle today and they didn't disappoint," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "It has been a really fun team to watch this last month or so. We just have to keep growing and getting better each week." The dual began at 125 with sophomore Darian Cruz propelling Lehigh to the early lead with a 23-4 technical fall over Aaron Moldoff in 6:09. Cruz finished with six takedowns plus a pair of near falls and an escape in his 20th win of the season. F&M claimed the next two bouts to take a 6-5 lead after three matches. At 133, sophomore Dean Somers subbed for senior Mason Beckman, who instead competed at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Classic. Somers dropped a 4-1 tiebreaker decision to Scott Stevens. Tied 1-1 after regulation and sudden victory, Stevens registered an escape and takedown in the first half of the tiebreaker and held Somers off in the second half. The featured bout of the dual matched No. 15 Rick Durso and 18th-ranked junior Randy Cruz at 141. Cruz had a solid ride in the second period but ultimately gave up a reversal to trail 2-0 after two. A third period Cruz escape was the only other scoring as several Cruz shots were thwarted in a 2-1 Durso victory. The Mountain Hawks took over from there with seven consecutive bonus wins. Freshman Cortlandt Schuyler, wrestling in his hometown in place of Laike Gardner registered six takedowns in a 14-6 win over Jason Bing at 149. That win gave Lehigh a 9-6 lead it would not relinquish. At 157, freshman Ian Brown subbed for Mitch Minotti and picked up the only fall of the dual. Brown took Sharron Townsend to his back early on and after some hard work got the pin at 1:29. The final five bouts of the dual were all Lehigh wins by technical fall. Sophomore Drew Longo moved up to 165 in place of Ryan Preisch and won 20-5 in 5:19 against Gordon Bolig. Longo scored seven takedowns before using a cradle for four near fall points. An eight takedown ended the bout early in the third period. Freshman Gordon Wolf posted his first career dual meet win with an 18-3 technical fall over Colin Gironda at 174. Wolf totaled four takedowns and had four point near falls in the second and third periods. "These guys just want to wrestle and are a lot of fun to watch," Santoro said of the backups who saw action on Saturday. "This is the kind of style we want to have all the time." Senior Nathaniel Brown followed with a quick 18-0 technical fall over Josh Young at 184. After an early takedown, Brown used four four-point near falls to end the match in just 2:17. At 197, junior Ben Haas made it four straight technical falls with a 16-1 win over Charles Kerkesner in 3:36. Haas led 12-1 after one and opened the second period with a reversal and two point near fall. Senior Max Wessell closed the dual with a 21-3 technical fall over Antonio Pelusi at 285. Wessell's second four-point near fall ended the match in 5:36. "We've been spending a lot of time on turning people from the top position," Santoro said. "That's going to be a difference maker when we get later in the season. The guys did a good job today." The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their road swing next Saturday when they travel to No. 16 Cornell for a 6:30 p.m. dual. Audio coverage will be available on ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley (1230, 1320 and 1160) as well as ESPNLV.com.
