  1. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Missing three All-Americans from its lineup, the No. 15 Stanford wrestling team showed off its depth in a 22-15 victory on the road at CSU Bakersfield, Sunday, at the Icardo Center. The Cardinal was without Connor Schram (133 pounds), Joey McKenna (141 pounds) and Jim Wilson (174 pounds), but still won six of the 10 bouts and avenged a dual loss from last season to the Roadrunners. Sunday's dual began at 157 pounds, where Stanford redshirt sophomore Paul Fox put the Cardinal on the board first with a 6-2 decision over Jacob Thalin. Fox registered takedowns in the first and second periods, and held a 4-2 lead going into the third. He chose down to start the final frame, tallying the escape and ended the match with 2:42 of riding time. It was the first dual win for Fox this season as he improves to 16-10 overall. Redshirt junior Keaton Subjeck added to the Stanford lead with a hard-fought 7-5 decision over Lorenzo De La Riva at 165 pounds. Tied 3-3 after the first, De La Riva took a 4-3 edge going into the final period. Subjeck started in the down position, quickly tallying the escape to tie it 4-4. Subjeck recorded another takedown and added riding time, but gave up a stalling point to De La Riva. Subjeck is now 3-0 in duals this season and moves to 12-4 overall. Redshirt senior Peter Galli, wrestling up a weight at 174 pounds, made quick work of Matt Penyacsek recording a fall in 2:42. It is the fifth pin of the season for Galli, who is now 15-4 on the season. The Roadrunners won their first match at 184 pounds as Bryan Battisto posted a 15-2 major decision over Stanford senior Zach Nevills, cutting the Stanford lead to 12-4. Redshirt senior captain Josh Marchok then held off 18th-ranked Matt Williams, 6-4, at 197 pounds to give Stanford a 15-4 lead in the dual. Marchok improves to 3-1 in duals this season and 4-3 overall. Nathan Butler, ranked 10th nationally, added to the Cardinal lead with a 10-1 major decision over Dominic Balmer at 285 pounds. Butler notched three takedowns, an escape, two stalling points and 4:11 of riding time in the win. He is now 3-1 in duals and 15-5 on the year. Fresh off his first Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week honor, true freshman Gabriel Townsell picked up 7-4 decision over Sean Nickell. Townsell, ranked 18th at 125 pounds, collected three takedowns and 1:13 of riding time in the win. It marked the first dual win of his career as he is now 9-6 overall. After redshirt senior Peter Russo dropped a 9-1 major decision at 133 pounds, the Roadrunners added three more points at 141 pounds. Russell Rohlfing, ranked 17th nationally, recorded a 10-4 decision over true freshman Brandon Kier. Coleman Hammond capped off the dual with a 12-2 win over Walker Dempsey at 149 pounds. The Cardinal remains on the road next week, traveling to New York City to wrestle Princeton on Saturday, Jan. 14. 2. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Virginia Tech wrestling team continued its winning ways in the all-time series against North Carolina as the No. 6 Hokies (7-1, 1-0 ACC) throttled the Tar Heels (4-3, 0-1 ACC), 28-8, at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill on Sunday evening. Key victories from freshman Dominic Latona at 133 and redshirt sophomore Ryan Blees at 157 paved the way for the Hokies' upperweights and sweet revenge for redshirt junior Zach Epperly at 174 pounds. Tech has now won its last nine meetings with UNC dating back to 2009 and lead 36-31-2 in the all-time head-to-head. After senior Joey Dance picked up his second major decision of the weekend, Latona trailed Nicholas Lirette 4-2 after the first period at 133. An escape midway through the second cut his deficit to one and, seconds later, jumped out to a 5-4 lead. Latona's reversal of riding time in the second period proved to be difference maker in his 6-5 decision that extended the Hokies' lead to 7-0. A tech fall at 141 got the Tar Heels on the board, 7-5, but redshirt sophomore Solomon Chishko put Tech back on track at 149 where he racked up 1:15 of riding time and three TDs in the first period. UNC's Troy Heilmann erased the possibility of a major decision with some late points but Chishko settled for a 10-5 decision that made the match score 10-5. Blees followed Chishko with a gritty performance at 157 as he picked up his first win of the weekend with 6-5 decision over Joey Moon. The Tar Heels refused to go away quietly though as they took the 165-pound bout that set the stage for a top 10 showdown at 174. Last year's ACC Championship match at 174 was a 3-2 win in favor of UNC's Ethan Ramos. Sunday night was a different story for Epperly as he used two near fall points in the second period to get retribution over seventh-ranked Ramos, 8-2, and extend Tech's lead in the dual to 16-8. The rout was on after a convincing tech fall from redshirt sophomore Zack Zavatsky at 184 pounds and wins from redshirt junior Jared Haught at 197 and redshirt Ty Walz at heavyweight. Walz's major decision gave him nine bonus points on the season. The Hokies next travel to the 757 for the Virginia Duals that runs from Friday, Jan. 13 to Saturday, Jan. 14. 4. EVANSTON, Ill. -- A technical fall by Alex Griffin and a Jacob Morrissey pin were key to Purdue's 20-16 win over Northwestern inside Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday. The bonus points were the edge as both teams claimed victory at five weights. With the win, the Boilermakers evened their Big Ten Conference record at 1-1 and improved to 6-2 overall, while Northwestern slipped to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten duals. "It's always good to get a conference win and this one was a good team win," Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. "We won the dual on the strength of two dominating performances by Alex Griffin and Jacob Morrissey. Jeremy Golding's win is also noteworthy because he stepped up and won a big match for us, that definitely was a highlight." A hard fought 6-2 decision at 149 pounds was sealed for Golding by taking down Northwestern's Shayne Oster late in the third period. Golding recorded a takedown in the first and reversed Oster in the second to build a 4-1 lead after 5:00 of action. Griffin gave the Boilermakers a 14-3 lead heading into the intermission thanks to a 16-0 technical fall against Ben Sullivan. The 157-pounder held a 14-0 lead after the opening period and five seconds into the second period he reversed the Wildcat to end the match. The technical fall is the 10th of the redshirt senior's final campaign as he lifted his season mark to 21-8. After a decision by the Wildcats at 165 pounds, Morrissey came out and made quick work of Braxton Cody, pinning him in 50 seconds. The fall was the second in as many dual matches for the redshirt junior who hails from Oconto Falls, Wisconsin. It was also the second pin of his career that has come in less than 60 seconds. The six team points from Morrissey were pivotal with Northwestern closing out the dual with decisions at 184, 197 and 285. Purdue opened the dual with back-to-back decisions from Ben Thornton (20-8) and Luke Welch (14-7) at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. "Coming out of this dual and heading into Indiana on a shorter week, I expect to see a jump in our performance," Ersland said. "We had very good training before and after the winter break. We have to continue to wrestle our match and that's what we are going to focus on this week. Friday should be a lot of fun." For the first time in over a decade, Purdue wrestling will take to Mackey Arena to square off against in-state rival Indiana in Mackey Mayhem at 8 p.m. ET on Friday. Tickets start at just $1 and can be purchased here. The first 1,000 fans get a free Purdue wrestling foam finger. Admission is free to Purdue wrestling alumni. Alum should register here to be recognized at intermission. #BoilerNotes • Purdue won its third straight over the Wildcats to take a 45-41-2 lead in the all-time series. • Sunday's starting lineup was the sixth different lineup the Boilermakers have used this season … Tyler Kral made his 10th consecutive start dating to last season, which is currently the longest streak for Purdue. • Purdue scored the first points in eight of the 10 bouts. • With eight back points, Alex Griffin moved into the season record back points top five with 148 … he also hit 300 career back points in his career, which ranks fourth all-time … he registered his 10th technical fall of the season and 20th of his career … thirty percent of his 67 career wins are by technical fall. • Ben Thornton notched the 35th win of his career. 5. TEMPE, Ariz. --The No. 13/19 Sun Devils started and finished strong, ultimately posting a 30-15 victory over Cal Poly, in their Pac-12 opener. The win improved ASU to 36-12 all time and 20-3 at home vs. the Mustangs. Josh Kramer and Ted Rico set the tone with back-to-back decisions at 125 and 133 lbs., Kramer's victory padded with riding time as ASU took a 6-0 lead. Kramer's victory marked his first in duals while Rico picked up the first win of his career. "It's good for a couple Arizona kids to get in the lineup and make an impact in the dual meet today," said head coach Zeke Jones. "It ended up being wins that were important. I think Josh Kramer gets to the leg and doesn't finish as much as he should, but getting his hand raised is always big. Ted (Rico) finishing that match, I think he just needs to finish a little stronger. Both got the W." The teams traded pins, Josh Maruca (149) defeating Joshy Cortez with his first career pin in the second period as the Sun Devils regained the lead, 12-6. Maruca starting the heart of the order, Josh Shields (157) followed with a 6-1 decision vs. Colt Shorts, Cal Poly's sole ranked wrestler. Anthony (165) and Zahid Valencia (174) tacked on back-to-back pins, the former's in just 43 seconds, for their team-leading sixth pins of the season, as Arizona State took the largest lead of the afternoon, 27-6. The Sun Devils allowed Cal Poly points at 184 and 197 but the match had already been decided after the first seven weight classes. "We just came back from Iowa where it was -13 and it was a good time to toughen up. I think we looked a little flat after travel but I think these young kids, we have a lot of freshman and sophomores, they are out there competing and they are the hunters. They are excited that they actually get to wrestle in college now and [Cal Poly] was excited about coming in and trying to wrestle us. I think our young kids are going to start having a little bit of a bullseye and they will have to learn how to deal with that." Tanner Hall held off Spencer Empey in the final match of the event with a 7-2 decision to pad the Sun Devil victory. "It's like anything, each guy has areas they need to work on. Until we can shut a team out, we have got to get better. I think we have to finish better, we have to hand fight better, and we just have to be ready for a team that's trying to get tough with us and we have to get tough back." As part of Arizona State's sustainability initiatives, each ticketed sport features a "Green" game this season and today's match marked the program's participating event in the series. Gunning pulled away with a pair of takedowns in the third period. Gunning improved to 8-1 on the season in duals with the win. "This was a good win for us," head coach John Stutzman said. "At 184, that guy beat us a couple years ago. To come back and win, I think that was important for Brett's confidence and progression. At 197, that guy beat us last year in a dual meet. So to win that one was big. They had some guys out, but they still had some good guys in the lineup and I think we wrestled fairly well." The win over Sacred Heart capped a solid weekend for the Bulls. Including yesterday's 32-3 win over Columbia, Buffalo won 18 of a possible 20 matches in their two duals. The Bulls will have a tough test on Thursday when they host 7th-ranked Missouri at Alumni Arena beginning at 7 pm. NORMAN -- With the match knotted at 18, heavyweight Ross Larson recorded a win by fall in the final bout of the afternoon to help the Oklahoma wrestling team knock off No. 5 Missouri, 24-18, on Sunday inside McCasland Field House. The No. 18 Sooners registered six bout wins in the match, including a win by forfeit for DaWaylon Barnes at 157 pounds. With the win, OU moves to 2-3 on the season. "It's exciting to get any win," OU Head Coach Lou Rosselli said. "They (Missouri) weren't at full strength, but I think it's still a reflection of where we're headed. It's always a big win to beat a top-tier team, even with some of their backups in there. I'm excited for some of the guys that did a nice job, even a couple of guys who didn't win. I thought we might be in trouble giving up a couple of falls, because usually it's trouble, but we found a way to get through that and still win. Andrew Dixon came through to give us a chance, and then Ross (Larson) capped it off with a pin at the end to make the difference." The contest started out at 125 pounds, with OU's Christian Moody recording a 6-4 decision over No. 14 Barlow McGhee. Moody struck first with an early takedown and led 2-1 at the end of the opening period. The redshirt freshman tacked on an escape and a takedown in the second and added an escape in the final period for the win. At 141 pounds, junior Mike Longo won 2-1 over Mizzou's Zach Synon. Longo earned a penalty point and an escape in the second frame for the lead, and Synon responded with an escape in the third for the only points of the match. In his first match as a Sooner, junior Yoanse Mejias started on fire with an 8-4 decision over Phyllip DeLoach at 165 pounds. The majority of Mejias' points came in the third period, as he collected two takedowns and tacked on the riding-time point for the victory. In the 184-pound bout, junior Andrew Dixon registered a big win for the Sooners, downing Matt Lemanowicz, 6-0. The match was scoreless after the opening frame, but Dixon recorded a reversal to start the second and led 2-0 through two periods. He added a reversal and a 2-point nearfall in the third for the win. Redshirt senior Ross Larson capped off the match with a win by fall in 5:59 over Austin Myers to clinch the upset for Oklahoma. He tallied two takedowns and an escape to lead 5-0 at the time of the fall. "This shows our guys that they can compete with everybody," Rosselli said. "It's showing that you're a competitive team and that you can go out there and do a nice job and compete with the best. It gives us an opportunity to see some of these tough guys, so you should be a little more settled and unnerved by the competition and be able to compete better when you get to nationals." In his first match for the Sooners, Jacob Rubio (133 pounds) lost by fall to No. 15 John Erneste in 2:32, and at 149 pounds, No. 12 Davion Jeffries dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 4 Lavion Mayes. Mizzou's Dylan Wisman recorded a win by fall in 2:59 over Matt Reed in the 174-pound bout, and redshirt senior Brad Johnson dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 1 J'Den Cox at 197 pounds. Next up, the Sooners travel to Hampton, Va., this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14, for the Virginia Duals. Oklahoma returns home on Jan. 22 at noon for a Big-12 matchup with West Virginia. 11. ATHENS, Ohio -- Central Michigan won six matches, four by major decision, on Sunday as the Chippewas defeated Ohio, 22-12, in their Mid-American Conference dual opener. CMU, which is ranked 14th, improved to 2-0 in duals and wrestles at home on Sunday, Jan. 15 (2 p.m.) against Northern Iowa in a MAC dual. Ohio is 4-4, 2-2. The Panthers, who are ranked 22nd, are 4-2, 2-0 MAC. Their league dual victories have come over Northern Illinois, 23-17; and over Old Dominion, 29-9. On Sunday, the Chippewas got major-decision victories from Corey Keener (133 pounds), Justin Oliver (149), CJ Brucki (174) and Jordan Ellingwood (184). Colin Heffernan (157) and Austin Severn (197) were CMU's other winners. "We were continuously trying to expand our leads and we kind of dominated, for the most part, the late part of the matches," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "Those are the things you're looking for, trying to get bonus points, wrestling hard in the third period or late in a match. Those are the things that are important." It was CMU's first dual meet since a 22-10 nonconference home victory over Virginia on Nov. 13. Since that dual, the Chippewas wrestled in two prestigious tournaments, the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, where they finished fifth of 34 teams; and the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., where they were 11th of 42. "There's a little bit different psychology in duals than in a tournament, a little more pressure on you in duals," Borrelli said. "To go on the road for the first time, wrestling a dual for first time in almost two months, I think for the most part we represented ourselves well. It's a positive." Borrelli said the Chippewas are continuing to make strides with an eye toward the MAC and NCAA championships in March. "I think we're trying to get better," he said. "Our kids are trying to execute what we've been emphasizing to them and I see them trying the things that we're working on, sometimes you can do those things and sometimes you can't, but at least they're trying. They may not be successful all the time, but at least they're listening and working hard to improve, and that's all you can ask." Results: 125: Shakur Laney (Ohio) dec. Morelli chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. Morelli worked in on a high single but Barnes was able to move out of bounds and get a reset with 1:11 on the clock. Morelli worked another high double on the edge of the mat but once again Barnes moved out of bounds and a reset commenced with :15 left in the period. Morelli did force Barnes into a stall warning with :10 on the clock. Down 1-0, Barnes chose down to start the third period but Morelli was strong on top. The Lion senior built up over 1:00 in riding time before the Husker bench challenged for an illegal hold to stop action. The call on the mat was confirmed and action continued with Morelli in the top position. Morelli was able to keep control of the Husker until only :06 remained and the 1:50 in riding time gave the Lion the 2-1 win. 184: Sophomore Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 2 at 184, battled senior TJ Dudley, ranked No. 3, in the dual's marquee match-up. Nickal drew first blood with a swift low double to takedown at the 1:43 mark. Dudley escaped off a reset and action resumed in the center circle with Nickal leading 2-1 midway through the period. The early takedown was the lone one of the opening period and Nickal led 2-1 after one. Nickal chose down to start the second period. The Lion sophomore steadily worked his way to an escape and picked up a third point on an illegal hold. Nickal went to work on offense, forcing Dudley to the outside circle for the rest of the period and carried a 4-1 lead into the final stanza. Dudley chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped. Nickal, however, continued to press on offense and picked up his second takedown to lead 6-3 after cutting the Husker loose at the 1:35 mark. Nickal lifted Dudley off the mat and took him down of an 8-3 lead at the 1:10 mark. Looking for bonus points, Nickal cut the Husker senior loose and took him down again to lead 10-4 with :20 left. Nickal cut Dudley loose and, in the end, posted a dominating 10-5 win over the third-ranked Husker. 197: Junior Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 11 at 197, met senior Aaron Studebaker, ranked No. 7. The duo battled evenly for the first two minutes, with McCutcheon looking to connect on low openings and Studebaker trying to control action up top. Neither wrestler scored and the bout moved to the second stanza tied 0-0. Studebaker chose down to start the second period and scrambled his way to a reversal and a 2-0 lead with 1:46 on the clock. McCutcheon quickly escaped to a 2-1 score and action resumed in the middle of the mat. The Lion junior continued to press offensively, maintaining control of the center of the mat but Studebaker's defense gave the Husker a 2-1 lead after two periods. McCutcheon chose down to start the third period and Studebaker caught him trying to roll out for an escape. The Husker senior was able to get the fall at the 6:01 mark. 285: Sophomore Nick Nevills (Clovis, Calif.), ranked No. 5 at 285, battled senior Collin Jensen, ranked No. 15. Nevills took the first real shot of the match at the 2:00 mark, forcing a scramble that ended with a stalemate at the 1:22 mark. Nevills worked his way in on a single leg and scored when Jensen asked for injury time. The stoppage gave Nevills the choice and the Lion sophomore took down. Nevills scrambled his way to a reversal and a 4-0 lead with :30 left. Nevills went to work on top and rode the senior out to lead 4-0 after one period. Jensen chose down to start the second stanza and escaped but Nevills had 1:02 in riding time. Leading 4-1, Nevills chose down to start the third period. He fought off a solid Jensen turn attempt, reversed the Husker and then turned him for a pin at the 6:01 mark.
  14. When Princeton ended a 24-year losing streak to Penn last year, the Tigers held on for dear life. The Tigers had a different strategy Sunday afternoon at the Palestra, when both teams opened the 2017 Ivy League season. The Tigers dominated from start to finish. Highlighted by two nationally ranked wins and a thrilling overtime win at 157, Princeton opened its Ivy season with a 28-8 victory over the Quakers inside the Palestra. Princeton won eight of 10 matches and didn't allow a single takedown until the sixth match of the day. Junior Jon Schleifer, currently ranked 17th nationally, had the biggest win of the day, and one of the best of his already-impressive career, when he claimed his a big victory over eighth-ranked and returning All-American Casey Kent. After a scoreless first, Schleifer scored on a single in the second and rode Kent for nearly a 1:00 to lead 2-1. Kent chose the defensive position to open the third, Schleifer threw him to the mat on an early escape attempt for two back points. By the time Kent escaped, Schleifer led 4-2 and had more than enough riding time to feel comfortable with a three-point lead. Kent got in on a single in the final 20 seconds to get a takedown and had Schleifer in an awkward position, but the 2015 Ivy League Rookie of the Year countered it and rolled back on top of Kent to clinch the 7-4 win. When Brett Harner and Frank Mattiace met in the 2016 EIWA semifinal, it was the only tense seven minutes for the Tiger junior en route to the program's first EIWA title in 14 years. The rematch Sunday wasn't nearly as dramatic, as Harner hit a six-point move late in the first period and never relinquished control in a 10-3 victory over his 15th-ranked opponent. Sophomore Mike D'Angelo picked up his best win of the year in a thriller at 157, easily the best match of the first half of the dual. Both were aggressive in both shots and counters throughout a scoreless first period, and each escaped within seconds of the next two periods to force overtime. Penn's May Bethea came closest to the takedown in sudden victory, but D'Angelo fought it gamely over the final 10 seconds to extend the match. While both competitors were gassed, D'Angelo came up with another quick escape to open a 2-1 lead, and he pulled out a gritty 30-second ride to thrill his sideline and a strong contingent of Tiger fans who made the trip to Philadelphia. Freshman Ty Agaisse returned to the mat after missing several weeks with an injury and gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead, and the trio of Pat D'Arcy, Matthew Kolodzik and Jordan Laster built on that momentum to open a 15-0 lead when D'Angelo took the mat. Senior Ray O'Donnell closed it with a major decision of his own to clinch the 28-8 win. Results: 125 – Ty Agaisse (Pr) dec. Jeremy Schwartz 7-2 133 – Pat D'Arcy (Pr) mdec. 15. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Three consecutive wins with bonus points pushed UNI wrestling up 23-17 over Northern Illinois. "You're going to be flat sometimes, and you still need to find a way to get up," said head coach Doug Schwab. "And that's kind of a trick, especially with a young team, young guys." UNI improved to 4-2 overall and are 2-0 in the MAC. "My challenge to the team all year has been 'How much ground can we cover? How much better can we get from this event to the next event?'" said Schwab. "If we keep with that mindset, when we get to the national tournament, we're going to be able to make a whole lot of noise." Northern Illinois got a strong start with a tech fall in 2 minutes, 58 seconds over UNI's Jay Schwarm at 133 pounds. After a scoreless first period at 141 pound, Jake Hodges gave up an escape to Angel Velasquez but fought off a late attempt at a takedown. He trailed 1-0 to start the third. He quickly tied it up with an escape of his own. With 20 seconds left in the match, Velasquez got the takedown needed to win. A final escape wasn't enough, and UNI trailed 8-0 in team points after the second match. No. 8 Max Thomsen was first to score with an escape off the start in the second period of the 149-pound match. He led 1-0 over No. 14 Steve Bleise to start the third. Bleise tied it up with an escape, but a second stall warning gave Thomsen the 2-1 lead needed to knock off the third-ranked wrestler in the MAC. Thomsen leads in the national rankings after a third-place finish at the Southern Scuffle but was ranked fourth in the latest MAC standings released this morning. Bleise is ranked third in the MAC. Bryce Steiert jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first period and continued to extend his lead. Steiert notched seven takedowns to earn UNI's first bonus points. UNI continued to trail Northern Illinois 14-7 at intermission. Three straight matches with bonus points gave UNI the first lead of the dual. Taylor Lujan got it rolling with an exciting matchup at 174 pounds. Lujan gave up the first takedown, but he countered with a reversal to tie it up midway through the first period. He kept an aggressive offense to get the fall in 4:41 and closed the team score gap 14-13. Jacob Holschlag's 11-1 major decision at 184 pounds pushed the team score to 17-14 in UNI's favor. Chase Shedenhelm debuted in the Panther lineup at 197 pounds, up a weight from his usual 184 pounds. He was able to get a reversal on No. 10 Shawn Scott, but an escape and riding time gave Northern Illinois the 4-2 decision. JJ Everard gave himself a 3-0 lead to start the third period. NIU's Caleb Gossett escaped just before Everard earned the final second for riding time, but Everard grabbed another takedown to earn the point. Everard's 6-2 decision gave UNI the 20-17 lead heading into the final match of the dual. A reversal and four-point nearfall gave No. 11 Dylan Peters the 6-1 lead to start the second. He would go on to win 7-2 over NIU's Brock Hudkins. "The last two guys (Peters and Everard) did what they really had to do to close it out," said Schwab. The Panthers improved to 36-1-5 against the Huskies. UP NEXT UNI will hit the road for another MAC match-up with Central Michigan Jan. 15. "They are very stingy team," said Schwab. "We have to be able to get some more angles. They don't give you a whole lot of opportunities." 16. EAST LANSING, Michigan -- The third-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team swept 10 matches and scored bonus points in seven bouts to shutout Michigan State, 44-0, on Sunday at Jenison Field House. Iowa recorded 37 takedowns and surrendered none to record its largest win in the series since a 51-5 win in 1986. "I think our conditioning was evident today," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "That's good. That's a badge of honor for our guys." Thomas Gilman opened the dual with a fall in 45 seconds, the fastest of his career, and Sam Stoll ended the day with a six-point win for stalling disqualification. Iowa's heavyweight forced six stalling calls against Michigan State before the match was terminated with 1:24 left in the second period. "I like Stoll's match," added Brands. "That's a 1-0 type of wrestler that likes to keep it close and our pace was high. Every time he walks on the mat I always say I love Stoll because he can hand fight, his pace is high, and he scores." Gilman and Stoll bookended eight bouts that included three decisions, three technical falls, and a pair of major decisions. Cory Clark piled up 4:48 of riding time to win 7-0 at 133. Joey Gunther held on for a 2-1 win at 165, topping No. 6 Drew Hughes to earn his first win over a ranked opponent, and Cash Wilcke scored a takedown in each period to win 8-4 at 184. Iowa's three technical falls came from three returning All-Americans. Brandon Sorensen scored seven takedowns and added four nearfall points to win, 20-5, and improved to 20-0 all-time in Big Ten duals. Alex Meyer (174) scored 15 points in the final one minute, 23 seconds to blow open a 7-3 match and win 22-7, and Sammy Brooks scored 12 points in the opening period to roll to an 18-3 win at 184. It was his second technical fall in as many matches. Michael Kemerer improved to 18-0 with a 14-2 win at 157 and Topher Carton was his second straight match against a ranked opponent at 141. Carton used three takedowns, four nearfall points, and 3:05 of riding time to defeat No. 16 Javier Garcia, 12-2. "Today was more along the lines of what we're trying to put together," said Carton. "The coaches have me believing that if I wrestle seven minutes hard and go to my offense with pressure, it makes it really hard on opponents and that's when my wrestling is at its best." Iowa (7-0, 3-0) returns to the mat Sunday in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Hawkeyes wrestle top-ranked Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. (CT). The dual is streamed live at FloWrestling.com and can be heard on KXIC and Hawkeye All-Access. 17. YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team got back on track and secured its first Mid-American Conference win of the season with a 25-14 dual victory over Old Dominion University Sunday afternoon, Jan 8, inside the Convocation Center. EMU (4-2, 1-1 MAC) won five bouts, and secured a sixth via forfeit. Getting bonus points for the Eagles were redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) who notched his fifth pin of the season and third in dual action, as well as redshirt junior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) who had a 12-4 major decision, his first of the season. Old Dominion (1-5, 1-3 MAC) had a pair of major decisions in four match wins, but could not overcome the forfeit and bonus points of the Eagles. The dual began at 184 lbs. where ODU's nationally ranked wrestler got the afternoon started with a 10-2 major decision, giving the Monarchs an early 4-0 lead. ODU's second nationally ranked grappler took the 197 lbs. bout as well, this time by 10-5 decision to make it 7-0 after two. The Eagles got on the board at heavyweight when No. 14 Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) used a pair of takedowns, a near fall, an escape, and over four minutes of riding time to secure an 8-2 cut EMU's deficit to four, 7-3. Eastern took the lead at 125 lbs. where No. 18 Gonser overpowered ODU's Steven Simpson. He got a first period takedown and rode up the riding time to over two minutes. A scoreless second led to the third where Gonser started on bottom. He got the reversal midway through and locked up the cradle to get a pin in 6:52, putting EMU in front, 9-7. The Monarchs had to forfeit the 133 lbs. match, extending the Eagle lead to 15-7 midway through the dual. From there, Eastern got a huge win at 141 lbs. to break the match open. Springer led 9-4 late in the third when he flipped his opponent for a two-point near fall right before the buzzer and his riding time secured the 12-4 major decision and extend the lead to 19-7. ODU got back on the board at 149 lbs. with a tight 6-4 decision to put it at 19-10 with three bouts to go. The 157 lbs. put the match almost out of reach for the Monarchs in another thrilling bout. Redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) was tied 2-2 into the third and started on top looking to erase riding time. After almost giving up an escape, Carson rode his opponent back and flipped him for a two-point near fall to take a 4-2 lead. An escape made it 4-3, but Carson stood tall for the decision and the 22-10 team lead. Old Dominion's third nationally ranked wrestler got the job done at 165 lbs. with another major decision, 14-6, to make it 22-14 heading into the final bout. Redshirt sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Libertyviille, Ill.-Libertyville) ended the dual with the fifth EMU win grinding out a 7-4 decision, and securing the 25-14 victory for the Green and White. The Eagles return to the mats next weekend against Adrian College, Jan. 13, in Adrian, Mich. 18. College Park, Md. -- Fighting Illini wrestling won seven of ten matches, including five with bonus points, to rout the Maryland Terrapins, 30-15, on Sunday morning at the XFINITY Center. After beginning the dual on an 11-0 run, the Orange and Blue clinched the dual victory with a 19-0 run by Kyle Langenderfer, No. 1 Isaiah Martinez, No. 12 Zac Brunson and No. 14 Emery Parker. The 11th-ranked Illini improve to 1-1 in the Big Ten, while Maryland falls to 0-2. "It was a good effort today," said Head Coach Jim Heffernan on the first win of the Big Ten season. "Our guys wrestled hard and competed well." Wrestling the Terrapins for the first time since 2006, the Orange and Blue sprinted out to an 11-0 lead with three consecutive by Travis Piotrowski, No. 4 Zane Richards and Mousa Jodeh. "It was a good rebound [performance] for Travis [Piotrowski] and Mousa [Jodeh]," said Coach Heffernan. "Travis got us off to a good start, fought the entire match and found a way to score in the third period." Richards (14-1) extended the Illinois lead with a dominating performance against Alex Vargas, defeating the 133-pounder by technical fall, 24-8. Richards wore out Vargas with 10 takedowns in the match, only allowing Vargas to score points off of escapes. Richards added a two-point near fall at the end of the third period to clinch the five-point victory. Richard's victory marks the 96th of his career, tying him with former Illini Nate Patrick (1998-01) for 24th on Illinois' career wins list. Mousa Jodeh pushed the Illinois lead out to 11 points with a 5-4 victory over Jhared Simmons at 141 pounds. Arguably the most exciting match of the dual, Jodeh allowed a takedown in the first period but was able to use two escapes to enter the final period tied, 2-2. In the final frame, Simmons retook the lead with an escape and held the lead with less than a minute remaining. With 40 seconds left on the clock, Jodeh was able to notch his first takedown of the match to gain the lead, 4-3. Simmons was able to work an escape before time expired, tying the match, but not before Jodeh had surpassed one minute of riding time to win the match. After Rutgers got on the board with a pin by No.16 Alfred Bannister against Eric Barone (3:49), the Illini put the match away with four straight bonus-point victories from Kyle Langenderfer, Isaiah Martinez, Zac Brunson and Emery Parker. Langenderfer (13-4) bounced back from a tough loss by pin on Friday night with early dominance in a 13-4 major decision against Justin Alexander. The Illini junior came out with a high level of aggression in the first three minutes, earning a quick takedown and turning it into four back points. After an Alexander escape, Langenderfer ended the opening period with a second takedown, leading 8-1. After a quiet second period, Langenderfer earned five more points, including one for riding time, in period three to earn the bonus point. At 165 pounds, Martinez (14-0) overpowered Josh Ugalde, wearing the Maryland grappler down with nine takedowns and a four-point near fall to earn the technical fall in just three minutes of action. The 24-8 victory marks the fifth technical fall for Martinez this season, tops on the team. The dominance continued at 174 pounds, as No.12 Zac Brunson recorded his team-leading sixth fall of the season, pinning Sam Rowell in 5:31. Brunson (19-3) began the match with a takedown, and then earned six back points while riding out Rowell to end the period. The Illini senior added an escape and two more takedowns in the next two periods to lead 13-1. On the second takedown, Brunson was able to get Rowell on his back, earning the fall 31 seconds into the third period. 184-pounder Emery Parker finished off the 19-0 with a 19-9 major decision of Idris White, stretching the Illinois lead to its biggest margin of the day, 30-6. Parker (18-3) totaled eight takedowns to control the match, three in each of the first two periods, while only allowing a takedown to White in the final period. The four-point victory marked Parker's team-leading 14th bonus-point victory. With the dual already clinched for the Illini, Maryland earned victories in the final two bouts of the dual. At 197 pounds, David-Brian Whisler held on for a 4-3 decision over Andre Lee despite the Illini sophomore's takedown in the closing seconds of the match. The Terrapins added six more points on an injury default victory against Deuce Rachal at heavyweight. Next up, the Orange and Blue will have a week to prepare for the No. 4 Ohio State, as the Illini travel to Columbus, Ohio to wrestle the Buckeyes on Sunday, January 15 at 1 p.m. central time. The match will be streamed live on BTN Plus, which fans can watch with a paid subscription. 19. The nation's oldest wrestling tournament featured No. 1 Blair Academy (N.J.) along with almost every strong program in Oklahoma, three of whom were also nationally ranked. Even absent three nationally ranked wrestlers in No. 5 Michael Colaiocco (113), No. 6 Julian Ramirez (152), and No. 9 Andrew Merola (160), the Buccaneers still dominated the 73rd annual Geary Invitational Tournament at large. Scoring 173 points, Blair Academy placed ten wrestlers inside the top three, including five weight class champions: Trevor Mastrogiovanni (113), Mike Madara (120), No. 18 Chris Cannon (126), Leo Tarantino (170), and No. 1 Chase Singletary (220). Placing second were No. 15 Nick Incontera (106), No. 5 Zach Sherman (132), No. 13 Malcolm Robinson (138), and Willy Kaiser (152); Sherman and Robinson lost in the finals to nationally ranked opposition. The wrestler to finish third was Nick Mosco (195). It should be noted there are matches for true second when the runner-up and third place finisher did not compete earlier in the tournament; however, the results of those matches were not available. Ranked No. 12 nationally, Tuttle finished second in the tournament scoring 131.5 points on the strength of eight placers. The Tigers were led by a pair of weight class champions, No. 6 Tanner Litterell (138) and No. 17 Brik Filippo (145); Litterell beat No. 13 Malcolm Robinson 5-4 in the championship match. Other placers were Rhett Golowenski (120) in second; Luke Surber (113), Dustin Plott (152), and Tanner Johnson (170) in third; Maison Duke (182) in fifth; and Caleb Berryhill (160). Three other wrestlers were one match away from a top six placement finish. No. 18 Sand Springs placed fourth in the tournament with 86 points on the strength of six placers. A pair of Sandite wrestlers won championships, No. 1 Daton Fix (132) and Peyton Scott (152); Fix beat No. 5 Zach Sherman by a 7-3 decision. Another three wrestlers placed third, Michael Ritchey (120), Beau Bratcher (145), and Devin Jordan (220); while Cody Mathis (138), who was in the lineup instead of state runner-up Jack Karstetter, placed sixth. Also missing from the lineup was state placer Zane Bosma (170), while three other Sandite wrestlers missed placement by one match. No. 19 Choctaw placed sixth in the tournament with 70 points, anchored by weight class champion Jaryn Curry (160).
