FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team went ahead early and withstood a late rally, securing a narrow 25-18 win against Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) rival Sacred Heart on Sunday. The Diplomats wrapped up their New England road trip on a high note with their seventh-straight win against the Pioneers and improved to 3-5, 1-4 EIWA on the year. After back-to-back Sacred Heart decisions at 174 and 184 cut down F&M's lead to seven at 19-12 heading into 197, Anthony Mancini followed with a late third-period pin at 6:29 that put an end to the Pioneers' comeback. Action opened with a forfeit at 125 going to F&M's Edgar Garcia, and a Dan Martoccio second-period pin (3:28) that put the Diplomats ahead 12-0 in the early stages of the match. Two-consecutive Sacred Heart decisions made it a 12-6 contest, but Emmett LiCastri's 6-4 decision at 157, followed by Robbie King's 15-6 major at 165, seized the momentum back into F&M's favor. Jimmy Stillerman (174) and Gordon Bolig (184) both hung tough with their opponents, falling by decisions but not allowing bonus points to the Pioneers, before Mancini's pin sealed the victory. F&M receives a much-deserved week off from competition and returns to the mat on Saturday, Feb. 4th for a doubleheader in Lancaster against Drexel (12:00 p.m.) and Hofstra (2:00 p.m.). EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team bounced back with a dominant win at Northwestern on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 22), earning bonus points in seven of eight wins to roll to a 38-10 victory at the Wildcats' Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wolverines boasted two pins, four technical falls and a major decision to close out their weekend road trip. Junior/sophomore Malik Amine set the tone with a quick fall in his dual-meet debut at 149 pounds -- the dual's starting weight -- using a bottom-leg turk to pin Shayne Oster at the 48-second mark. He struck on a high crotch just seconds into the first period before ending the bout early. It marks his fourth fall of the season. Fifth-year senior Conor Youtsey, who made his season debut after rejoining the Wolverine roster just last week, also earned a pin at 125 pounds after the intermission break, using a suck back early in the second period before finishing Anthony Rubinetti in a half at the 4:13 mark. Youtsey led 4-2 at the time after scoring on a pair of first-period takedowns. The Wolverines reeled off three straight technical falls after Amine's pin, earning big bonus points from senior Brian Murphy and sophomore/freshman Logan Massa and Myles Amine and 157, 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Murphy, ranked ninth in the latest InterMat poll, piled on 14 points in the third period to beat Ben Sullivan, 21-4, scoring on three takedowns and eight back points to end the bout at the 6:37 mark. Massa, ranked second nationally at 165 pounds, rebounded from his first loss of the season with a 26-10 technical fall over Johnny Sebastian. He finished on 12 takedowns -- four in each period -- and rode for 2:34 to secure the tech fall at match's end. It is his seventh technical fall of the season and 13th bonus win. Myles Amine, ranked ninth nationally, also used his riding-time point to secure a 21-6 technical fall over Braxton Cody in the subsequent bout at 174 pounds. Amine scored eight takedowns, added a two-point near fall off a second-period cradle and rode for 4:26. It is his 11th bonus win this season. Sophomore/freshman Jackson Striggow earned a 6-3 decision over Jacob Berkowitz at 197 pounds after the intermission break. Striggow grabbed the early lead on a first-period technical violation and iced the match with a pair of third-period takedowns, including a counter double leg to pad his lead midway through the frame. Northwestern earned wins at 184 pounds and heavyweight, but the Wolverines responded with three straight wins to close out the dual. Sophomore/freshman Stevan Micic, ranked fourth at 133 pounds, followed Youtsey's pin with another technical fall, cruising to a 17-2 win over Jason Ipsarides. The Wolverine wrestler blew the match open with a six-point sequence off a two-on-one in the first period and added another four-point near fall in the second and a reversal and takedown in the third. Sophomore/freshman Sal Profaci closed out the dual with a hard-fourth 7-3 decision over Alexander McKenna at 141 pounds, scoring on takedowns in the first and third period and a reversal in the second to control the bout throughout. A couple of penalty points narrowed the score, but Profaci iced it with a counter takedown in the waning seconds and added a riding-time point for his 1:40 advantage time. The Wolverines will wrap up the home portion of their 2016-17 dual season next weekend with a pair of duals at Cliff Keen Arena. On Friday (Jan. 27), U-M will host Rutgers at 7 p.m. before welcoming Lehigh at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 29). Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office. STILLWATER -- The top-ranked and undefeated Oklahoma State wrestling team picked up its eighth win of the season Sunday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena, moving to 3-0 in Big 12 action with a 31-9 rout of 19th-ranked South Dakota State. The Cowboys earned five bonus-point victories in the win, including technical falls from redshirt freshman Nick Piccininni, senior Anthony Collica and senior Nolan Boyd, who tallied the 100th win of his career. Senior Austin Schafer ended the match with an exclamation point, pinning Jackrabbit Alex Macki in the first period. "(South Dakota State wrestles) hard and they wrestle tough," head coach John Smith said. "We got tested in a few different matches…There were a lot of things from this match that were good, but also several that we've got to correct." Once again, following up a 20-2 tech fall in Friday's win over West Virginia, Piccininni set the tone for the match at 125 pounds. Piccininni wasted no time banking a 15-0 tech over Ben Gillette to put the Cowboys up, 5-0, on the Jackrabbits early. The redshirt freshman opened with a takedown and a pair of nearfalls in the first period to lead 8-0. It took only 47 seconds into the second frame to end the match, as Piccininni, who elected to start the period on bottom, escaped and tallied another takedown and four-point nearfall to lock up the win. Redshirt freshman Kaid Brock was upset at 133 pounds, as seventh-ranked Seth Gross came away with a 6-4 decision to give Brock his first loss of the season and only the second of his career. Reigning NCAA Champion at 141 pounds Dean Heil tallied his second major decision of the weekend to seize momentum back in the Cowboys' favor. Heil scored a takedown on South Dakota State's Isaac Andrade with under 20 seconds to go in the opening period to lead, 2-0, after one. The Cowboy junior opened the second on top and rode out the whole frame, adding a pair of back points, after Andrade elected down. Heil finished off the major in the third, escaping and dropping Andrade for another score on the way to a 9-0 win. Anthony Collica also picked up his second bonus-point victory of the weekend, working hard for a 23-8 tech fall over 20th-ranked Alex Kocer at 149 pounds. Collica used five takedowns in the opening period to hold a 10-4 lead after three minutes. Five more takedowns in the final two periods and a couple of minutes of riding time allowed the senior to ride off with his first tech of the season. At 157, Joe Smith came just short of tallying bonus points for OSU against South Dakota State's Logan Peterson. Leading, 9-2, in the third after a four-point nearfall with over a minute of riding time in the bank, Peterson escaped to cut Smith's lead to six. Smith got a couple of good looks, but couldn't convert on one final takedown, finishing with a 10-3 decision. Redshirt sophomore Chandler Rogers won his eighth-straight match, handling Luke Zilverberg in an 8-3 decision at 165 pounds. Leading, 4-3, heading to the second and starting in the defensive position, Rogers staved off Zilverberg with a takedown with just outside of a minute to go in the match, riding out the clock for the win. After opening his match in a 6-0 hole early at 174 pounds, Cowboy senior Kyle Crutchmer couldn't dig himself out, giving up a 7-2 decision to No. 20 David Kocer. Nolan Boyd's 100th win came with bonus points attached, as the senior picked up his second technical fall of the weekend in an 18-2 win over Martin Mueller at 184 pounds. Boyd used a 13-point first period to help propel him to the win, wrapping the match in 5:25. Boyd, the 40th Cowboy in program history to reach to century mark, has now tallied bonus points in four of his last five dual starts for the Pokes. "It felt great," Boyd said of getting his 100th win. "(I felt) a little bit of pressure. There's always a negative thought you have to fight off, and I think that's what it is was; just fighting off the negative thought, being positive and taking these matches as opportunities." Facing a tough test against eighth-ranked Nate Rotert, redshirt sophomore Preston Weigel dropped a 3-1 match in sudden victory Sunday. Trailing, 1-0, after two periods after being dinged for his second stalling warning in the second period, Weigel elected to start down and quickly escaped to open the final frame to tie the match. Neither wrestler could score in the final minutes of regulation, sending the match to sudden victory where Rotert would convert the decisive takedown. Heavyweight Austin Schafer recorded the second fall of his senior season, following up a 16-0 tech fall in his match on Friday with a first-period pin of South Dakota State's Alex Macki. With the triumph, Schafer pushed his record on the season to 16-1 overall with nine of those wins coming with bonus points. "He looks strong and he looks very confident on the mat right now," head coach John Smith said. "Of course, he's had a couple of guys that really can't test him, but it's just good to see him go out and compete hard. We did a better job today on nearfall points and turning people. He's definitely one that can do that and it's been exciting for me to see him have that success from the standpoint that we didn't know what to expect, or if we were going to be able to win half of our matches of at heavyweight this season. Now we've got a guy that looks like King Kong out there. It's a real bonus for us and the credit goes to him. He works hard." The Cowboys now head back on the road for a couple of weeks, beginning with a couple of familiar foes this weekend. OSU will match up with No. 8 Missouri Friday night at 7 p.m. in Columbia, Mo., before traveling north to Ames, Iowa, for a Big 12 showdown with Iowa State on Sunday at 2 p.m. Results: 125: No. 11 Nick Piccininni (OSU) TF Ben Gillette (SDSU) 15-0 (3:47) 133: No. 7 Seth Gross (SDSU) dec. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- No. 11 Rutgers wrestling (9-2, 3-1) defeated Purdue (8-3, 3-2), 27-9, Sunday afternoon in front of 2,595 fans at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The victory was the 150th of 10th-year head coach Scott Goodale's career. “It was a good match. That's a good Big Ten team and they're going to win a lot down the road,†Goodale said. “That kind of sets us up for the national duals. Obviously we're going to probably make the national duals at this point. Where we're going to go is going to depend on where we finish in this conference. We've got some big ones coming up, but that one had me worried for a long time. They wrestle really, really hard. Overall it was a good team win.†The Scarlet Knights won seven of 10 matches on the afternoon to upend the Boilermakers. RU gained bonus-point victories in three consecutive matches from No. 6 141-pounder Anthony Ashnault, No. 14 149-pounder Ken Theobold, and No. 18 157-pounder John Van Brill to put the dual out of reach. Ashnault posted his 14th bonus-point win of the season and is now 18-3 overall after his 10-0 major decision against Kyle Ayersman. Theobold (14-5) notched a tech fall for the second-straight match against Nate Limmex, needing only the opening period to end the bout. Van Brill (17-7) won by injury default against NCAA qualifier Alex Griffin in the opening period. 125-pound true freshman Brandon Paetzell notched his 12th win of the season to start the dual off, before RU closed the match out with decisions from No. 14 Nicholas Gravina (184 Pounds), Matthew Correnti (197 Pounds) and heavyweight Razohnn Gross. Gross (7-7) and Purdue's Tyler Kral were in a battle to close the match, needing a second round of tiebreakers to decide the bout. With Kral starting the second 30-second stanza on top, Gross needed a quick escape to preserve riding time and win the match. The Franklin Park, New Jersey, native freed himself of Kral's grip with 1.5 seconds of advantage, and defended until the horn sounded to win, 4-3. Gravina (14-4) held off Tanner Lynde to sweep the weekend, while Correnti (11-7) solidified a 5-2 decision with a third-period takedown on a re-shot after Christian Brunner reached for his legs. Paetzell won for the third time in four matches and is now 12-4 overall in his true freshman campaign. 133-pounder Scott DelVecchio fell, 5-4, in tiebreakers in the front half of the dual against Luke Welch. Welch reversed DelVecchio as the final horn sounded to win by a point as the Scarlet Knight eyed a 4-3 win. RU's other two losses were also close decisions. 165-pounder Willie Scott fell short in a 6-4 loss to Dylan Lydy. At 174-pounds, Phillip Bakuckas was edged, 7-4, against Jacob Morrisey. Rutgers returns to the mat Friday at No. 15 Michigan (7 p.m.) and Sunday at Michigan State (2 p.m.). RU's dual against the Wolverines will stream live on BTN Plus, while Sunday's match against the Spartans will be televised live nationally on Big Ten Network. ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- As important as victories are in a wrestling match, so, too, are points. This was never more evident than in Sunday's match between Navy (7-1) and Duke (2-5) at Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis. A 10-1 major decision by sixth-ranked heavyweight Jacob Kasper of Duke in the final bout of the afternoon knotted the team score at 17 apiece. The Mids, however, would win the tie-breaker by the third criteria, outscoring the Blue Devils, 66-60. “I'm extremely proud of the effort the team gave today in our victory over a competitive Duke squad,†said third-year head coach Joel Sharratt. “It came down to always winning by the largest margin possible. Scoring 66 points is an indicator of an aggressive program and these guys are really understanding wrestling the NAVY WAY!†Duke opened up a 7-0 lead with back-to-back victories by Thayer Atkins (15-7 vs. Brant Leadbeter) and Cole Baumgartner (7-4 vs. Cody Lambert) at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Navy, however, answered with a pair of its own. Freshman Jared Prince (Safety Harbor, Fla.), who joined this week's national rankings at #20, scored a takedown and a 4-point near fall in the closing seconds to secure a 15-4 major decision over Duke's Zach Finesilver at 141 pounds. Third-year starter Corey Wilding (Jr / Pittsburgh, Pa.), meanwhile, controlled the opening two periods to fight off the Blue Devils' Xaviel Ramos at 149 to pick up a 9-5 victory and knot the team score at 7-7. Duke senior Jake Faust held the Mids' Zach Elvin (Fr / Harrisburg, Pa.) scoreless at 157 pounds in giving the Blue Devils a 10-7 advantage halfway through the match. It was Drew Daniels (Jr / Overland Park, Kan.), however, who took advantage of his rookie opponent at 165, scoring three takedowns in the final period and amassing better than three minutes in riding time to post a 12-4 major decision over Garrett Neff. In one of the most anticipated matches of the afternoon, the 174-pound match pit 17th-ranked Jadaen Bernstein (Jr / Glen Gardner, N.J.) of Navy against #15 Connor Bass. The two wrestlers met less than a month ago when Bass pinned Bernstein 20 seconds into sudden victory at the Southern Scuffle. A focused Bernstein was determined to come out on top in the rematch. Bernstein owned a 2-1 advantage after the first period and built a 5-2 lead after two periods. The two-time NCAA qualifier scored a takedown in the final 15 seconds and amassed nearly three-and-a-half minutes of riding time in an 8-3 victory over Bass. “Jadaen wrestled extremely well, dominating every position of the match,†added Sharratt. “He is gaining momentum at the right time and is getting better every match.†Not only did Navy push ahead by four points thanks to the Daniels and Bernstein wins, the Mids earned a +13 advantage in points which would prove to be important by the end of the match. Duke trimmed the Mids' lead to one when redshirt sophomore Alec Schenk utilized an escape and takedown in the third period to come from behind and deal 184-pound Michael Coleman (Jr / Hudson, Ohio) a 6-4 loss. It marked Coleman's first match back since he suffered an injury in mid-November at the Navy Classic. Improving to 6-0 in dual action this season, Steban Cervantes (Jr / Chula Vista, Calif.) outscored Duke sophomore Luke Farinaro, 6-1, in the third period to earn a 6-2 victory and give the Mids a four-point cushion. “Steban has been a rock solid performer and has emerged in various national rankings,†said Sharratt. “Our fans today saw another dominate performance by him.†For a second straight match, Navy heavyweight Thomas Ott (So / Lewes, Del.) would face one of the nation's best. Duke's Jacob Kasper came into the match with a remarkable 20-1 record, having won 14 consecutive matches. Ott held his own for most of the match, as Kasper held just a 1-0 advantage going into the final period. Kasper, though, was awarded three penalty points for stall calls against Ott. Kasper then took Ott to his back at the edge of the mat, and while Kasper earned six points for the takedown and four-point near fall, Ott managed to avoid the fall as time ran out. The 10-1 victory by Kasper, however, tied the match. “Thomas put himself in a position for a big upset and ultimately allowed the team to get the ‘W',†added Sharratt. “The lack of position cost him, but his heart and drive got him through a tough position to win the dual!†Going into the 165-pound match, there was zero advantage for either team in points as both had combined to score 35 apiece. Navy, though, would go on to outscored the Blue Devils by six over the final five matches to win the tie-breaker. Navy returns to action next Sunday when it plays host to the 23rd Annual All-Academy Championship. Action is slated to begin at 10:00 am at Alumni Hall with the finals set for 4:00 pm. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and $5 for groups (purchased in advanced). Tickets can be purchased at the match or in advance by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY, stopping by the NAAA Ticket Office located in Ricketts Hall (M-F, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm) or logging on to NavySports.com(.) COLUMBIA, Mo. -- In a dual between two top-20 ranked teams, No. 8 Mizzou Wrestling (9-2, 6-0 MAC) defeated No. 16 Central Michigan (3-2, 1-2 MAC), 24-8, in a Mid-American Conference dual on Sunday afternoon at the Hearnes Center. Mizzou racked up seven victories in the win, including two by bonus points. The victory for the Tigers was the 27th straight MAC dual win. Top ranked senior 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) started the afternoon on a high note, tallying an 11-2 major decision over Austin Severn. Cox was in control of the match throughout as he scored a takedown in each of the first two periods, along with an escape in the second. Holding a 5-0 lead going into the final period, Cox completed two more takedowns and gained a point from a stalling call on Severn, which was enough to earn a major decision and give the Tigers a 4-0 team lead right off the bat. With the win, Cox improves to 16-0 this season and 8-0 in duals. Next on the mat for the Tigers was redshirt freshman heavyweight Austin Myers (Alexandria, Ky.), who scored a 6-2 decision over Newton Smerchek. Myers led 2-1 after two periods and padded his lead in the third with an escape followed by a quick takedown. After a Chippewa win at 125 pounds, the Tigers caught fire, winning five straight bouts. Redshirt sophomore 133-pounder John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.), redshirt freshman 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.), redshirt senior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), and redshirt junior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee (Reno, Nev.) all won by decision. Erneste, Mayes and Lavallee all picked up victories over ranked opponents. Erneste's decision over No. 19 Corey Keener was his third win this season over a ranked opponent, while Mayes' had a statement victory over No. 6 Justin Oliver, winning 11-4. Lavallee's 3-1 win came in thrilling fashion as he took down No. 7 Colin Heffernan in sudden victory overtime after a closely contested match. After Lavallee's decision, redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) dominated his match against Logan Parks. Lewis recorded a first period technical fall, winning 17-0. Lewis' technical fall was his fifth of the season. Central Michigan claimed decisions in the final two matches to cap the score at 24-8. Next on the slate for the Tigers is No. 1 Oklahoma State, who will visit the Hearnes Center on Friday, January 27. The highly anticipated matchup is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (CT) and will be streamed on ESPN3 and the WATCH ESPN app. Fans are encouraged to show up early for the dual for a special "Tiger with Titles" event featuring #TigerStyle alums Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois wrestling received victories from No. 6 Zane Richards, Kyle Langenderfer, No. 1 Isaiah Martinez, No. 13 Emery Parker and No. 17 Brooks Black, as the Illini defeated Northern Illinois, 25-12, on Sunday (1/22) afternoon at Huff Hall. Richards, Martinez and Black combined for 16 of the team's 25 points, highlighted by Black's first-period pin to end the match. The win improves Illinois' all-time record against the in-state foe to 19-9. "I saw a lot on Friday I liked, but I didn't see much from them today, quite honestly," Head Coach Jim Heffernan said. "A lot of standing around, a lot of letting them control tie-ups and slow us down. And, the issue was, we didn't do anything about it. Frankly, it's just one of those deals after a good win and an emotional high, the safeguard, the thing we try to warn them against, is being flat and that's about as flat as our team has been in a very, very long time." After missing the first three duals of 2017 with an injury, Brooks Black welcomed himself back into the lineup with a pair of pins this weekend. After pinning (0:36) Kostya Golobokov on Friday evening, Black put Northern Illinois' Caleb Gossett on his back in 38 seconds today. "I'd say I responded pretty well, getting two pins," said Black on his return to the lineup. "Maybe not the top caliber of guys but, like Coach Heffernan said after the Michigan match, it's good to get back out there and get my nerves going because the difference from practice to being in the wrestling ring is a lot different. I responded well. We've got a big test next week, Michigan State and then Arizona State, and I think we'll show." Black now has three pins on the season, surpassing his season total from last season. Illinois' two top-ranked wrestlers No. 1 Isaiah Martinez and No. 6 Zane Richards both cruised to technical falls to spur the victory. Martinez matched the team high for takedowns in a dual match this season with 10, five coming in the first period, adding in a two-point near fall in the second period to win 23-7. The technical fall is Martinez's seventh of the season. While Martinez dominated the opening period, Richards did much of his damage in the third frame to earn his sixth technical fall of the season. Leading 10-2 entering the final two minutes, Richards doubled his point total with four takedowns to defeat Alijah Jeffery, 20-5. With the victory, Richards moves into a tie with Carl Perry for 23rd on Illinois' all-time win list with 98. Jesse Delgado ranks No. 22 in Illini history with 101 career wins. In addition to the three bonus-point victories, the Fighting Illini added decisions by Mousa Jodeh (10-11) at 141 pounds, Kyle Langenderfer (16-4) at 157 pounds and No. 13 Emery Parker (20-4) at 184 pounds. Jodeh picked up his tenth win of the season in the defensive struggle against Angel Velasquez. After both wrestlers traded escapes in regulation and a scoreless sudden victory period, Jodeh was able to ride out Velasquez in the tiebreaker to win 2-1. At 157 pounds, Langenderfer fell behind early after Cade McWhirter opened the match with a takedown. The Mokena, Illinois native regained the lead for good with a reversal in the final minute of period two. Leading 3-2, and 35 seconds of riding time in his favor, Langenderfer kept McWhirter under wraps for the first 1:45 of the third period to clinch the decisive riding time point for the 4-3 decision. With Illinois' lead cut to 16-9 through seven matches, No. 13 Emery Parker pushed the lead back out to double-digits with an 8-1 decision of Bryce Gorman. After a scoreless first period, Parker proved too tough on top for Gorman, earning two back points while riding out the Huskie. Parker quickly escaped to start the third, and then added two takedowns, but was unable to get a third takedown for the bonus point before time expired. Northern Illinois picked up wins from Kirk Johansen (125), No. 12 Steve Bleise (149), Trace Engelkes (174) and No. 9 Shawn Scott (197), each victory coming by decision. Despite dropping the match, Andre Lee (7-10) gave ninth-ranked Scott everything he could handle before dropping the bout in sudden victory, 7-5. Lee earned two takedowns, including one with 16 seconds left in the match to take a 4-3 lead, but allowed a last-second escape by Scott to send the match into overtime. Scott then earned the winning takedown three seconds into the extra period. "Andre is showing some progress," said Heffernan of the redshirt sophomore. "The mistake he made in overtime was probably being in too much of a hurry, but two offensive takedowns in the match was important. He's frustrated, but he's wrestling better and he's making progress." Up next, the Fighting Illini conclude their three-match home stand on Friday, January 27 when the Orange and Blue host Michigan State at 7 p.m. As part of 'Frats to the Mats' night, University of Illinois fraternities are invited to attend the match and participate in a pre-match thumb-wrestling contest. Illini Notes: The Illini improve to 19-9 all-time against Northern Illinois Brooks Black's 0:38 pin of Caleb Gossett is the Illini junior's third of the season and his second in as many matches. CLARION, Pa. -- Michigan State wrestling won the first two bouts on the way to tying a season-high by winning seven bouts on the afternoon to defeat Clarion, 23-9, Sunday afternoon at Marwick-Boyd Auditorium in Clarion's Throwdown at the Theater. With the win, the Spartans are 3-0 in the state of Pennsylvania this season after opening with a pair of wins at Bloomsburg and Lock Haven on Nov. 5. MSU is now 4-7 on the season after Sunday's non-conference victory, which was the Spartans' second-straight Sunday win and their second win in the last three matches. Michigan State is also 4-2 all-time against Clarion, breaking a two-match win streak by the Golden Eagles in the series. Clarion had a three-match win streak snapped and is now also 4-7 overall. Redshirt junior Mitch Rogaliner started the Spartans' string of victories with a 9-4 decision over Clarion's Jake Gromacki at 125 pounds. It was Rogaliner's first dual since Dec. 3 and his first overall action since Dec. 18, in improving to 11-8 on the season. At 133, redshirt sophomore Austin Eicher scored late for a 4-2 decision over Roshaun Cooley of Clarion. It was Eicher's second-straight win to improve to 16-11 overall, and is tied for fourth in both overall wins and dual wins (5). Senior 149-pounder Nick Trimble defeated Clarion's Jake Keller in a 10-2 major decision. Trimble's win snapped a five-bout losing streak, but had faced a ranked opponent in four of those previous five bouts. The Spartan posted his third major decision of the season and his fourth extra point victory this season. Redshirt freshman Austin Thompson matched Trimble with a major decision, defeating Taylor Cahill of Clarion, 12-3, in the 157 bout. Thompson now holds the team lead for victories single-handedly with his 21st win of the season, pulling away from a tie with redshirt junior 141-pounder No. 19 Javier Gasca, who was upset, 3-1, Sunday by Brock Zacher of Clarion. It was Thompson's 11th win in his last 15 bouts, posting three falls and four major decisions in that stretch. Thompson registered his team-leading sixth major decision victory and 12th bonus-point win of the season, and is now second on the team with seven dual wins. At 165, freshman Drew Hughes pitched his second shutout in a row with a 1-0 decision over Evan DeLong of Clarion, scoring on the riding time after a scoreless bout. Hughes now has won by shutout in nine of his last 11 victories, having won 15 of his last 18 bouts to improve to 20-4 overall and 8-3 in duals, ranking tied for second on the team in overall wins, while leading the team with eight dual wins and 34 dual points. Sophomore heavyweight Jacob Cooper controlled his bout with Clarion's Evan Daley throughout and won on a 10-4 decision to snap a five-bout losing skid. The win was Cooper's first dual victory this season and is now 10-15 overall. Sunday's 23-9 score was also the first time since a 27-6 win at Northern Illinois on Dec. 5, 2014, that MSU's opponent was held to single digits. After this weekend's pair of non-conference matches with Friday's home match vs. CMU and Sunday's match at Clarion, Michigan State returns to Big Ten action and has its third-straight weekend with Friday-Sunday action. The Spartans open the weekend by heading to Champaign, Ill., to tangle with No. 12 Illinois on Friday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. ET, then return home to host Rutgers on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. ET. The Gophers made themselves at home in Bloomington despite not visiting Indiana in the past four years, picking up bonus points in each of the afternoon's first four matches to spark a 28-9 win. It's the 31st win for Minnesota in its last 33 head-to-head matches against the Hoosiers. "We had a great start, beginning with Brett (Pfarr) and Michael (Kroells) setting a strong pace right away and it continued to roll from there," said head coach Brandon Eggum. "I thought up and down the line, we were very aggressive and scored a lot of points. That's what we talk about all the time with the guys, so it was great to see." Minnesota's three highest ranked wrestlers triggered the early onslaught by piling up three straight tech falls. It began with No. 2 Brett Pfarr and his relentless pressure on Norman Conley in a 24-9 victory. In a bit of a rarity, Pfarr picked up the tech without any back points - instead scoring 11 takedowns, an escape and the riding time point. Fellow senior, No. 8 Michael Kroells, followed with a tech fall of his own, 21-6, over Fletcher Miller. No. 6 Ethan Lizak finished the three-match flurry with a 15-0 shutout over Liam Cronin. Lizak's approach was the exact opposite of Pfarr's. Lizak picked up 10 of his 15 points on tilts, doing almost all of his scoring on the mat from the top position. Minnesota had not earned three tech falls in a dual since January 17, 2014, against Michigan State. The Gophers kept rolling into 133 pounds, where No. 16 Mitch McKee added bonus points and pitched the second straight shutout for Minnesota, an 8-0 major decision. McKee's was the fourth straight bonus point win for Minnesota, the first such streak the team has put together in a dual since Feb. 8, 2015 against Maryland. "Lizak did a phenomenal job scoring a ton of points in his match and McKee kept the pressure high," said Eggum. "We talked about leadership on the mat and the way they wrestle their matches carries over to the next guy. They showed the power of that today. Wrestling like that sends a message to the other team and to the rest of our lineup." No. 13 Tommy Thorn pushed the Gophers to a perfect 5-0 on the day with another shutout win, a 4-0 decision. Not only did he keep his opponent, Cole Weaver, off the board, Thorn's bout was the fifth straight in which Minnesota did not surrender a takedown. At that point, Indiana had scored in only two matches and all of those points had come from escapes. Indiana's first takedown came in the opening period of the 149-pound match between Chris Perez and Carson Brolsma, a match won by Perez, 4-2, to score the first points of the afternoon for the Hoosiers. Following the defeat, Minnesota fired back with wins at 157 and 165. No. 11 Jake Short did not allow a takedown in his match against Jake Danishek, narrowly missing out on a major decision as Danishek held on to Short's ankle on a late takedown attempt in the 10-4 decision. No. 13 Nick Wanzek followed with a 5-4 win that was decided by the riding time point, time Wanzek built up with a strong ride in the second period. "Today is how we should come out every single match," said Short. "Whether you win or lose, if you come out aggressive, that's a win in our eyes. Coaches talked about that before the match and they've been preaching it all year. It's not about winning and losing. It's about effort and attitude." Chris Pfarr and Devin Skatzka gave the crowd an exciting battle late in the dual, with both wrestlers scoring multiple takedowns and several close-calls for both wrestlers leading to no points. Ultimately, Skatzka held off Pfarr late to take the match, 11-8. In the night's closing bout, No. 7 Nate Jackson took a 10-4 decision over Bobby Steveson. Full match-by-match results are available at: z.umn.edu/wrind Minnesota's 28 points on Sunday were the most the Gophers have scored so far this season. It's the team's best output since its regular-season finale against Iowa State last season, when Minnesota hung 30 on the Cyclones. The 19-point margin of victory is also a season-best for Minnesota and its largest since that Iowa State dual. "Bonus points play an important role in winning and we wrestled a style that helped us scored some big bonus points today," said Eggum. The Gophers won't compete again until next Sunday, when Minnesota returns to Indiana to take on Purdue. That dual is scheduled for a 12 p.m. Central start and will be streamed live on BTN Plus. Minnesota's next home dual is still two weeks away, when the Maroon and Gold welcome archrival Iowa to the Twin Cities. Tickets for that dual are currently available on MyGopherSports.com. OLNEY, Md. -- A 1-2-3 punch at the upper weights propelled No. 4 Ohio State to a 30-12 victory over Maryland on Sunday afternoon in front of a standing-room only crowd at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md. The Buckeyes (8-0, 4-0 B1G) remain one of just three unbeaten teams in the nation. THE STORT STORY Kyle Snyder, who wrestled for Good Counsel from 2010-13 and went 179-0, didn't disappoint in his homecoming, piling up nine takedown and a four-point near fall to defeat Maryland's Youssif Hemida by technical fall, 22-7. Not to be outdone, sophomore Myles Martin redshirt junior Nathan Tomasello and redshirt freshman Kollin Moore also provided key bonus points as Ohio State won eight of nine matches. TOMASELLO, PLETCHER GET IT STARTED Ohio State forfeited at 125 pounds, but Tomasello, who this week took over the No. 1 spot nationally at 133 lbs., stayed perfect on the year at 10-0 with a 15-5 major decision of Billy Rappo. It was Tomasello's sixth bonus point victory and fourth by major decision. True freshman Luke Pletcher (20-2) then gave Ohio State a 8-6 lead in the dual as he easily dispatched Jhared Simmons at 141 by major decision, 16-7. Pletcher turned up the heat on Simmons in the third period, taking him down three times while also accumulating well over 1:00 of riding time to secure the major decision bonus point. RYAN, BURCHER, KRESEVIC EARN CLOSE WINS Maryland took it final lead of the dual with a pin at 149 lbs., but Jake Ryan (10-7) seized the momentum back with a 3-2 decision at 157 lbs. over Justin Alexander. Ryan scored the only takedown of the match at the 2:15 mark of the opening period. An escape by Alexander at the beginning of the second period tied it at 2-2, but Ryan countered with an escape to open the third and successfully fended off Alexander's attacks as time expired. At 165, Cody Burcher (14-7) scored a workman-like 5-2 decision over Patrick Gerish on the strength of two first-period takedowns and an escape to begin the second period. His win gave Ohio State a 14-12 lead in the dual, an advantage it would not relinquish. Redshirt senior Justin Kresevic (8-3) picked up his second dual win of the season by scoring a takedown against Josh Ugalde at 174 lbs. with just 1:15 remaining in the third period to break a 1-1 tie. That win pushed the Buckeyes lead to 17-12. MARTIN, MOORE, SNYDER SCORE BONUS POINTS Martin, wrestling less than an hour from his high school (McDonogh School in Owing Mills, Md.) won his 20th match of the year by taking down Sam Rowell seven times in a 16-6 major decision. For Martin, it was his team-leading seventh major decision and 15th bonus point victory. Moore (19-2) followed with a major decision of his own, topping David-Brian Whisler 17-7. Moore had three first-period takedowns to build a quick 6-2 advantage. In the main event of the afternoon, Snyder (6-0) took Yousiff down seven times in the first two periods and twice more in the third before tilting him on his back to get four near-fall point that clinched the technical fall. Snyder has won all six of his bouts this year by bonus points (four fall, one major decision, one technical fall). WHAT'S NEXT Ohio State is back in action on Friday, Jan. 27 when it travels to Carver-Hawkeye Arena to tangle with No. 2 Iowa (7-2) live on BTN. The dual will begin at 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET). "I think our team wrestled well,†OU Head Coach Lou Rosselli said. “I think they prepared well. They did all the little things right. They wrestled hard. They did a good job on top trying to get bonus points when we could. We had a couple matches, a couple close ones, but overall, I was very pleased to watch people grow and get better." Christian Moody got the Sooners off to a hot start with a win by fall in 6:13 over WVU's Devin Brown. Brown led 4-3 entering the final frame, but Moody took him to his back for a takedown and secured the pin to give the Sooners six points to start the dual. "I think he (Mejias) wrestled really well,†Rosselli said. “He just has to wrestle a little bit longer to dominate some of those positions so that he doesn't give up any freebees, but overall, I was happy to see him beat a top-ranked guy." In the 174-pound bout, Matt Reed made quick work of Ty Millward with a 19-0 technical fall in 3:00. That's the biggest thing we've been focused on is making sure we don't get caught up with wins and losses and focusing on just marking progress every week." "For today's win over Binghamton, I just thought that we had some really gutsy performances, especially from Ben Harvey and Samson Imonode. Those guys had to battle hard to win in the third period, and I thought they showed a lot of toughness. I'm really proud of their fight and am excited to see them continue wrestling like that throughout the rest of the season." "To be honest, I thought that even in some matches we won this weekend, we were exposed a little bit in some areas that we need to recognize and address quickly."
