With across the board excellent performances, No. 21 Tuttle (Okla.) ascended to the top of the team standings at the Kansas City Stampede this past weekend at Hale Arena. The Tigers outlasted 39 other schools on the strength of ten wrestlers placing inside the top nine, including seven within the top five. Leading the 564.5 point effort were a pair of weight class champions, No. 5 Tanner Litterell (138) and No. 18 Brik Filippo (145). Cale Johnson (106) placed second, Rhett Golowenski (120) took third, Luke Surber (113) and Tanner Johnson (170) earned fourth, with Dustin Plott (152) finishing fifth. The tournament runner-up was No. 44 Park Hill (Mo.) with 446.5 points. The Trojans has seven placers within the top nine, led by the runner-up finish from Josh Steele (132). Devin Winston (170) placed third, No. 14 Weston DiBlasi (126) was fifth, Austin Kolvek (120) and Thomas Lisher (152) earned sixth, while Trey Crawford (106) and Kevlin Eblen (113) placed ninth. Lisher lost in the quarterfinal due to an illegal slam call while leading in the match; wrestlers that lost prior to the semifinal could do no better than fifth. Even with the absence of state runner-up Jack Karstetter (138) and third place medalist Zane Bosma (170), No. 17 Sand Springs (Okla.) placed third in the standings with 409 points. The finish was anchored by a pair of weight class champions, No. 1 Daton Fix (132) and Payton Scott (152). Four other wrestlers placed within the top six: Blake Sargent (126) as a runner-up, Delvin Jordan (220) in ffith, with Riley Weir (106) and Beau Bratcher (145) finishing sixth. The event's other nationally ranked team, No. 25 Goddard (Kansas) finished fourth with 374.5 points, including seven top nine placers. The group was led by tournament runner-up Cale Davidson (195), Kameron Frame (152) and Austin Andres (182) placed third, Kendall Frame (160) in fourth; while others finished sixth, seventh, and ninth. The lone team other than Tuttle and Sand Springs to have multiple champions was Christian Brothers College, Mo. No. 11 Malik Johnson beat No. 9 Paxton Rosen (Edmond North, Okla.) 3-1 in the final, while No. 13 Emille Shannon won the title at 160 pounds. The other finals match to place ranked wrestlers against one another came at 182 pounds, where No. 9 Chase Shiltz (Creston, Iowa) beat No. 18 Khamari Whimper (Baylor School, Tenn.) by 7-0 decision. Rounding out the weight class champions were Sam Latona (Thompson, Ala.) at 106 pounds, Caleb Tanner (Collinsville, Okla.) at 113, Korbin Meink (Skutt Catholi, Neb.) at 126, No. 12 (at 182) Clay Lautt (St. James Academy, Kansas) at 170, No. 9 Jake Boyd (Smithville, Mo.) at 195, No. 7 Quinn Miller (Archer, Ga.) at 220, and Patrick Healy (Christian Brothers, Tenn.) at 285.

EDINBORO, Pa. -- After facing a tough early season schedule that left them with losses against nationally-ranked opponents in their first three duals, the Edinboro wrestling team took out their frustrations against Clarion on Monday night. Wrestling for the final time in 2016, and in their Eastern Wrestling League opener, the Fighting Scots won eight of ten matches to claim a 31-6 victory in front of 833 fans at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro is now 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the EWL, while Clarion is 0-4 and 0-1, respectively. Edinboro picked up bonus point wins at three weight classes, along with an upset at 165 lbs. Patricio Lugo, ranked seventh by InterMat at 149 lbs., pinned Mike Bartolo (7-9) at 4:51 to improve to 14-3. Chase Delande (9-8) followed with a fall at 3:59 over Taylor Cahill (10-11) at 156 lbs. With Austin Matthews still out with an injury, Fritz Hoehn took the mat at 165 lbs. against Clarion's Evan DeLong (10-4). A week earlier, DeLong won the PSAC championship, and was named the Outstanding Wrestler in the process. Hoehn would come away with a 5-4 win, with an escape to start the third period the difference. He opened a 2-1 lead after one period, and the two traded reversals in the second period, which ended tied at 4-4. A redshirt freshman, Hoehn is now 13-4. The night got started with Edinboro winning at 125 and 133 lbs. Sean Russell, ranked 12th at 125 lbs., was impressive in a 12-4 major decision over Jake Gromacki (10-5). The redshirt sophomore boosted his record to 13-3 thanks to five takedowns, and almost three minutes in riding time. Redshirt freshman Korbin Myers (14-5) followed with a 7-2 decision over Roshaun Cooley (9-9) at 133 lbs. Myers jumped out to a 5-2 lead after one period on the strength of a pair of takedowns. Clarion got on the board with a win by 19th-ranked Brock Zacherl (10-3) at 141 lbs. It didn't come as easy as it first appeared, however, as freshman Ozzy Lugo (5-6) battled the national qualifier before dropping an 11-5 decision. Zacherl led 6-1 after one period, and the lead grew to 9-1 after two periods on an escape and two nearfall points. But Lugo battled back with a reversal and a takedown in the final two minutes. Edinboro would run off wins in the next five matches to build the lead to 28-3. The final two came in rematches of PSAC championship bouts from last weekend. Ty Schoffstall won a 7-4 decision over Dom Rigous (7-4) at 174 lbs. to improve to 6-4. The redshirt junior recorded a pair of takedowns and owned 4:26 in riding time. He had won a 6-2 decision at PSAC's. Freshman Dakota Geer ran his record to 13-3 with a 6-1 decision over Scott Marmoll at 184 lbs. That came after a 5-3 decision in the PSAC title match. After a scoreless first period, Geer took control with an escape and takedown in the second, then added a second takedown in the third period. Clarion picked up its second win of the evening at 197 lbs., as Dustin Conti (6-4) won a 4-0 decision over Dylan Reynolds. Reynolds, another redshirt freshman in the lineup, is now 8-9. Bill Miller wrapped up the evening with an impressive 10-3 decision over Evan Daley (7-8) at heavyweight. Ranked 19th by InterMat, the redshirt sophomore recorded a takedown in each of the first two periods, then added two more in the third while improving to 13-6. The Fighting Scots have now won five straight duals against Clarion, and 18 of the last 19 meetings. Edinboro will now break for the holidays before returning to another difficult part of their schedule, competing in the Southern Scuffle on January 1-2. Coming off a poor performance at the Walsh Ironman, No. 34 Pomona (Colo.) was buoyed by the return of its best wrestler to the lineup Theorius Robison at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Robison, along with two other state placers and another state qualifier, were part of a football team that finished as state runners-up; a season that concluded just one week before the Walsh Ironman was contested. Robison, ranked No. 15 nationally at 138 pounds, put on a show in the 132 pound weight class. He earned a dominant 11-4 decision in the final against No. 15 Gary Joint (Lemoore, Calif.), while prior to that it was two major decisions and a pin among the matches on the road to a championship. Five others placed for Pomona: Coltan Yapoujian (120) finished third, Jason Romero (152) took fourth, Wyatt Yapoujian (106) earned fifth, Nolan Krone (170) was sixth, while finishing seventh was Justin Pacheco (113). Directly behind in the standings was No. 19 Choctaw, Okla. with 186.5 points. They were led by a trio of runner-up finishers: Gabe Johnson (106), Colt Newton (113), and Zach Austin (285); Connor Holman (126) placed third, while Jaryn Curry (160) earned fourth. Also with five placers, but finishing third, was No. 38 Roseburg, Ore. with 175.5 points. They were led by No. 3 Layne Van Anrooy, who won the title at 160 pounds, with a 10-4 victory over freshman A.J. Ferrari (Allen, Texas) in the final. Other placers included runner-up Bennet Mesa (138), third place finisher Haydn Maley (220), along with fourth place medalists Hunter Sparks (113) and Austin Harris (182). Fourth in the standings was No. 16 Allen, Texas with 148.5 points and five placers of their own. However, the Eagles were absent two of their better wrestlers: two-time state finalist Juwan Robinson (152) due to state football tournament success and state champion Evan Hackett (182) due to injury. The previously mentioned Ferrari led the way with a runner-up finish, which included a 5-4 upset victory in the semifinal over No. 14 Jaron Chavez (Centennial, Idaho). Earning third was No. 20 (at 160) Braeden Redlin, competing at 170 pounds; Mason Inglehart (195) took home fifth, Noah Yeamans (113) was sixth, while Logan Brown (126) placed eighth. Rounding out the five nationally ranked teams was No. 50 Wasatch, Utah, who finished in fifth with 142 points. They were led by four podium finishers, among with Ritchie Heywood (182) had the highest finish, placing second. Others to medal included Jake Discher (160) in fifth, Zak Kohler (132) in sixth, and Trevor Cluff (120) in eighth. Nationally ranked weight class champions included No. 4 (at 106) Brandon Kaylor (Bonney Lake, Wash.) winning at 113 pounds, No. 13 (at 152) Brock Hardy (Box Elder, Utah) earning gold at 145, No. 14 Andrew Berreyesa (Reno, Nev.) at 170, and No. 2 Cohlton Schultz (Ponderosa, Colo.) winning the 220 pound weight class. Berreyesa upended No. 18 Hayden Hastings (Sheridan, Wyo.) 4-3 in the final, while Schultz pummeled No. 17 Darryl Aiello (De La Salle, Calif.) to the tune of a 12-4 major decision. Other champions included Aaron Nagao (Esperanza, Calif.) at 106 pounds, Fabian Santillan (Grandview, Colo.) at 120, Jet Taylor (Sallisaw, Okla.) at 126, Jaxen Gilmore (Yukon, Okla.) at 138, Talen Ringel (North Summit, Utah) at 152, Owen Pentz (Morgan, Utah) at 182, Bear Hughes (Coweta, Okla.) at 195, and Brandon Kuipper (Columbia, Idaho) at 285. Santillan upset No. 5 Ian Timmins (Wooster, Nev.) 15-7 in the championship bout.

While the showdown between the top two wrestlers in the country at 160 pounds dominated the weekend at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament, there also was a great battle for the team title between the best teams in Class AAA and Class AA. Entering the late afternoon medal match session on Saturday, No.29 Kasson-Mantorville had a razor thin lead on No. 32 Shakopee, 208 to 207-1/2. Ten Komets wrestlers were competing to determine their placement finish: three for first, five for fifth, and two for seventh; while the Sabres countered with eight in placement bouts: five for first and three for third. Kasson-Mantorville went 3-0 in championship bouts, including wins by a single point in the program's opening and closing matches. Patrick Kennedy mustered a 3-2 victory over Kenny O'Neill (Prior Lake) in the opening match at 170 pounds, while No. 1 Brady Berge upended No. 2 Jake Allar (St. Michael-Albertville) 4-3 in the closing featured bout at 160; Berge used a takedown with 18 seconds left to cap off the bout, and become just the second wrestler to become a five-time Christmas Tournament champion. In between, Noah Ryan added a championship at 220 pounds Shakopee was much less successful in championship bouts, mustering just a 1-4 record, the one title coming from No. 6 Aaron Cashman at 113 pounds. No. 11 Brent Jones and No. 15 (at 152) Alex Lloyd suffered defeats to unranked opposition at 132 and 145 pounds respectively; Jones falling 7-4 to Sam Stuhl (Ellsworth, Wis.) and Lloyd losing 4-3 against Peyton Robb (Owatonna). Max Crowe lost a 4-2 decision at 106 pounds to Anthony Talamonti (Marian Catholic, Ill.), while Alex Crowe lost 6-2 in the tiebreaker to Jared Franek (West Fargo, N.D.) The Komets only went 2-5 in their other medal bouts, but it was enough to muster 225 points and a tournament title; while Shakopee went 2-1 in consolation finals, earning 216-1/2 points at tournament's end, with Carson Manville (126) and Sam Webster (138) taking home third place medals. The third middle-weight finals upset came at 138 pounds, where two-time state runner-up Tyler Eischens (Anoka) upended No. 6 Jake Bergeland (Centennial) by a 4-2 score. Missing the event due to potentially adverse weather/travel conditions was No. 36 Apple Valley, while the fourth nationally ranked team slated to compete was No. 33 Anoka. The Tornadoes finished fourth in the tournament with 149.5 points, anchored by the championship from Eischens. Four other wrestlers placed, all between third and sixth. Finishing third in the standings was Kaukauna, Wis. The Ghosts amassed 152 points on the strength of six lacers, led by the third place finish from Keaton Kluever (285); a trio of wrestlers placed fourth, while single participants earned sixth and eighth respectively. Joining Kasson-Mantorville with multiple weight class champions were Marian Catholic, Ill. and West Fargo, N.D. Each of whom had a pair stand on top of the podium. No. 19 Kendall Norfleet (182) joined Talamonti in earning gold for Marian Catholic, while No. 4 Brandon Metz (285) joined Franek in winning a title for West Fargo. In a showdown of nationally ranked wrestlers at 120 pounds, No. 18 Patrick McKee (St. Michael-Albertville) beat No. 3 (at 113) Travis Ford-Melton (Marian Catholic, Ill.) by a 4-2 decision. Rounding out the weight class champions were No. 2 Roman Bravo-Young (Sunnyside, Ariz.) at 126 pounds and No. 10 Daniel Kerkvleit (Simley, Minn.) at 195.

The former Sooner coach, who resigned this past summer, has stayed in Norman -- OU's hometown -- to join the coaching staff at Norman North High School, the Norman Transcript reported Saturday. John McKelvey's article emphasizes Cody's unique perspective as a former NCAA Division I coach with nearly a decade-and-a-half of experience, first at American University, then, for the past five seasons at Oklahoma. "Cody can share valuable lessons with the students, experience they couldn't get at any other high school," McKelvey wrote. "He can teach them techniques used by the best wrestlers in the some of biggest matches the sport has to offer. He can rid the wrestlers of mistakes, those he's seen countless times in young developing athletes. All of the coaching he can bring as an assistant under Brian Garcia is tough to replicate, yet the recruiting insight is the most valuable asset." "Cody can look at a wrestler and give him an honest assessment of his skills. People pay top-dollar for that elsewhere. With his college connections, he can find the right program for an individual who wishes to carry on their career. The parents don't have to drive halfway across the state, or even across the country, to get to a camp and hope their kid performs well. It's all right here, in the North wrestling room." When Cody announced his resignation in early August, he had led the Sooners to a 55-34 (.618) overall record and to a 10th-place NCAA finish in 2014, coached five OU wrestlers to a total of 10 All-America honors. Two of those wrestlers won national titles: Kendric Maple in 2013, and Cody Brewer in 2015. By the end of August, Oklahoma had revealed that Ohio State assistant coach Lou Rosselli had been hired as the Sooners' new head coach.

LAS VEGAS -- The always-thrilling Victoria Anthony show capped off a wowing set of women's freestyle finals at the 2017 U.S. Senior Nationals held at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino on Sunday night. Anthony, a U.S. Olympic Trials runner-up, jumped all over three-time Junior World medalist Erin Golston in the opening stanza of the 48 kg/105.5 lbs. championship match. Courtesy of a pair of takedown-to-turn combinations, Anthony amassed a whopping 9-0 lead as time ticked down in the first period. Then it was Golston's turn. As Anthony pressed for the technical fall, Golston pulled off a four-point toss on the edge of the mat to cut the lead to five points at the break. "It was a hard-wrestled match. She four'd me, so it got me going. I got a little bit greedy on the points. I was up 9-0, and I was like, I see the edge, I want it, and to my back. LAS VEGAS -- Three of the night's four wrestlers earned their first U.S. Senior Nationals titles at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino on Sunday night to wrap up a high-flying weekend of action. G'Angelo Hancock and Hayden Zillmer put on another heated performance in the 98-kg finals, a rematch of the recent Bill Farrell International finals. Hancock remained untouched on the day, notching a step-out and a passivity point to hold Zillmer, once again, for a 2-0 win. "He's a folkstyle guy and his style doesn't really match with mine much," Hancock said. "I'm a very high-intensity wrestler and he's a more tie-in and slow wrestler. EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Appalachian State University wrestling used six bonus point victories and knocked off two nationally ranked wrestlers to defeat Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, 39-4, on Sunday night at the SIUE Fitness Center. The Mountaineers (7-1, 3-0 Southern Conference) improved to their best start since 2002-03 when Appalachian went 11-1 before finishing with a loss to North Carolina. The Cougars dropped to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in SoCon play. Senior Vito Pasone began the night with a dominant 22-7 technical fall over No. 8 Freddie Rodriguez in the 125-pound weight class for Pasone's second-straight victory over a nationally ranked opponent. Freshman Colby Smith won out a tight bout at the 133-pound match, defeating John Muldoon in a 4-3 decision before sophomore Irvin Enriquez won a 15-4 major decision over Trevor Feagans. No. 15 sophomore Matt Zovistoski took the 149-pound match by getting the 8-5 decision victory over John Fahy before freshman Gavin Londoff won against Karsten Van Velsor in a 10-3 decision. No. 23 senior Forrest Przybysz won an impressive bout against Clayton Bass in the 165-pound weight class, getting the 21-2 technical fall victory in just 4:53, before No. 18 junior Nick Kee defeated Jake Residori in a 10-0 major decision - Kee's fourth-straight bonus point win. The Mountaineers got their first pin of the evening when David Peters-Logue took down Jake Godinez in just 1:18 at the 184-pound match before they dropped their lone match of the night at the 197 as Jake Tindle major decisioned Randall Diabe 12-4 at 197. The final match of the evening featured two nationally ranked heavyweight powerhouses: App State's No. 8 senior Denzel Dejournette and No. 25 Jake McKiernan. The match went back and forth for the first period before Dejournette got the upper hand and pinned McKiernan in 4:31. Appalachian State wrestling now stays in the Midwest when it travels next to Columbia, Mo. to face No. 5 Missouri on Tuesday, Dec. 20. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University at Buffalo wrestling team swept Indiana and Indiana Tech in a pair of duals Sunday afternoon. The Bulls defeated Indiana, 21-16, for their first ever win over the Hoosiers. Then UB took down Indiana Tech, the nation's 2nd-ranked NAIA program, 19-16. Buffalo mounted a furious comeback to beat Indiana. After falling behind 16-3, the Bulls won the final five matches to earn the victory. Colt Cotten got the Bulls off to a good start with a 4-1 decision over 20th-ranked Chris Perez. The upset win was Cotten's first over a ranked opponent this season. After Cotten's win, Indiana won the next four matches to take a commanding 16-3 lead. But the Hoosiers wouldn't win another match. James Benjamin sparked the comeback with a pin of Jake Hinz just 1:20 into the match. It was Benjamin's third pin of the season as the senior grappler improved to 9-2 on the year. Up next, Jake Gunning earned a 3-1 decision over Fletcher Miller to cut the Indiana advantage to 16-12. Kyle Akins kept the Bulls rolling with an upset win over 20th-ranked Elijah Oliver. Akins, wrestling in only his second match of the year, coming off an injury, earned an 8-3 decision to bring the Bulls to within 16-15. Bryan Lantry gave the Bulls the lead with a 3-1 decision over Garrett Pepple. Lantry improved to 7-1 on the season. With the Bulls leading 18-16, it came down to the final match of the dual - Jason Estevez vs. Cole Weaver at 141. Estevez, who had lost his previous two duals, stepped up and earned a 2-1 decision to preserve the win for Buffalo. "It was a great team win," head coach John Stutzman said. "We were down and battled back. Hats off to Kyle Akins and Colt Cotten for beating nationally-ranked guys and Estevez for coming through." In UB's second match, the Bulls were able to hold off a feisty Indiana Tech squad, 19-16. Again it was Cotten who got Buffalo off to a good start. The senior 149-pounder earned a tech fall victory over Robert Humphrey in the first match of the dual to put the Bulls ahead, 5-0. Alex Smythe followed with an 8-3 decision over Jacob Gross to extend the UB lead to 8-0. Indiana Tech won the next three matches to take a 9-8 lead and the Bulls found themselves having to come from behind to earn the victory. Nate Rose got the start at 197 and earned a 14-2 major decision over Trevor Yank to put the Bulls ahead, 12-9. Gunning earned his second win of the day, a 16-2 major decision over Guy Henson to extend the UB lead to 16-9. The Warriors won the last two matches, one by major decision, to make the final score 16-13. NORMAN, Okla. -- Cornell's big guns put up bonus points, but it was a pair of seniors who put the Big Red in position to top No. 18 Oklahoma 21-19 on Sunday afternoon at McCasland Field House. Cornell improved to 4-1 on the year with the victor, while the Sooners fell to 1-3. Craig Scott jumped out to a big lead and held off No. 12 Ross Larson by a 9-7 score at heavyweight, and Mark Grey used a takedown and back points in the final seconds to avoid an upset at 133 with an 8-5 victory over Trae Blackwell. While the two seniors were key, it was a sophomore who clinched the win. Joey Galasso all but put the dual out of reach when he earned a major decision over 13th-ranked Davion Jeffries in an 11-3 win at 149 pounds, dominating the All-America contender for a strong resume win. The senior tandem of Brian Realbuto (174) and Gabe Dean (184) scored 11 team points, including yet another first period pin, after Oklahoma opened the dual with a narrow 3-1 decision for No. 7 Clark Glass over Brandon Womack. Realbuto was completely dominant in a 16-0 technical fall over unranked Hayden Hansen for his 101st career win. Dean toyed with Andrew Dixon at 184 with three takedowns in the first 90 seconds before squaring off his shoulders for the first period pin. It was Dean's 11th win by fall in just 15 matches. The Sooners would never tie it up or take the lead, though they made for som nervous moments for Big Red fans. With a 14-6 team lead after Scott's upset win at heavyweight, Christian Moody caught Noah Baughman in a cradle for a first period fall to get the home team back within 14-12. Grey's late rally kept Cornell in the lead, and after Mike Longo's 5-4 win over Will Koll at 141, Galasso's bonus point win over a ranked wrestler put the Big Red up six points with one match remaining. Kyle Simaz was able to avoid the fall at 157 against No. 8 DaWaylon Barnes to secure the win. Cornell will be back in action at the Southern Scuffle beginning on New Year's Day in Chattanooga, Tenn. Dean will attempt to become a four-time champion at the event. RENO, Nev. -- Despite no starters making the trip, the Oklahoma State wrestling team brought home the Reno Tournament of Champions team title Sunday afternoon behind individual championship performances from Boo Lewallen, Jordan Rogers and Derek White. Competing in the first collegiate event of his career, Lewallen was also named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Lewallen went 5-0 on the day, including a pair of major decisions, to bring home the 141-pound title. The redshirt freshman, who sat out last season due to injury, capped off the event by knocking off seventh-ranked and last year's NCAA runner-up Bryce Meredith of Wyoming in a 7-3 decision. "It's a good stepping stone," Lewallen said. "I've been out since my senior year of high school due to injuries. Being able to recover from them and having the Lord with me, there's nothing better. I give all the glory to God, and I'm thankful to be here. Competing hard, there's no other way to compete for me. I've got to compete hard or I could be injured again. I hated sitting out." Senior Jordan Rogers was the second Cowboy to earn top honors at his weight, sweeping through the 174-pound bracket to earn the title. Rogers started hot, picking up two falls and a major decision in his first three matches. After winning his semifinal contest by injury default, he matched up with Austin Dewey of Boise State in the finals, gutting out a 6-4 victory. "When you come out to a tournament like this, there really isn't anything to lose," Rogers said. "That was kind of my mindset throughout the tournament, that there was nothing to lose. I felt like I was doing well. There were moments when I felt like I was holding back points, but you've just got to keep building off that. Hopefully, you get to the end of the season and can wrestle carefree all match long, so that was my goal for the tournament this weekend." Derek White brought home the title at 197 pounds, remaining steady throughout the day to win his second event as a Cowboy. White notched a pair of major decisions on his way to a 4-0 day, wrapping it up with a 7-3 decision over Cal Poly's J.T. Goodwin. The win moves White to 12-2 overall this season. Both of OSU's entries at 125 pounds placed on Sunday, with juniors Eli Hale and Zac Gentzler taking second and fourth, respectively. Hale was on fire for much of the day, starting 4-0 with a technical fall and major decision to advance to the 125-pound finals. Hale came up short however, dropping a major to Oregon State's Ronnie Bresser. Gentzler went 3-2 on the day, advancing to the semifinals before falling to Bresser as well in an 8-2 decision. In the third-place match, he would be topped by Michigan State's Logan Griffin. Two Cowboys placed at 133 pounds as well, with redshirt sophomore Mike Magaldo taking third and redshirt freshman Lincoln Olson coming in fifth. Magaldo won four matches Sunday, only falling to Stanford's Connor Schram in the semifinals. Olson had a strong showing as well, bouncing back from a loss to Austin Eicher in the quarterfinals to move through the consolation bracket and defeat Utah Valley's Durbin Lloren in the fifth-place match. Junior Davey Dolan took third at 157 pounds behind a strong 6-1 day that included an impressive five bonus point victories. Dolan advanced to the semifinals, coming up short to Wyoming's Archie Colgan, but he bounced back with a pair of wins in consolation to seal his third-place medal. Redshirt sophomore Tanner Allen took fifth place in the heavyweight bracket. Allen started out strong, going 3-0 to start the tournament to advance to the semifinals, but after a couple of consecutive losses he rebounded to take down Utah Valley's Jordan Karst in the fifth-place match. Hestin Lamons advanced to the semifinals as well at 165, and finished sixth overall. Competing unattached at 149 pounds, Geordan Martinez bounced back from a loss in the round of 16 to take fifth. The Cowboys will enjoy a brief holiday break before heading back out on the road to the Southern Scuffle Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

PARKERSBURG, W. Va. -- The No. 6 Virginia Tech wrestling team took nine of 10 bouts from West Virginia in the Black Diamond Brawl on Sunday afternoon as the Hokies defeated the Mountaineers in convincing fashion, 36-4, at Parkersburg HS in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The Hokies improve to 5-1 on the season with the win and have now won two-straight against the Mountaineers. No. 2 Joey Dance remained undefeated with a pin at 125 and No. 3 Jared Haught, a Parkersburg native, picked up a 3-2 decision in the final match of the afternoon over No. 7 Jacob Smith. “It was a great atmosphere today at Parkersburg High School,” head coach Kevin Dresser said. “We actually had a lot of Hokies in the crowd so thank you to those who came out. We're going to give our guys a little time off before we reconvene and get ready for Princeton and North Carolina to kick off the New Year.” In what was the main event of the dual, Haught and Smith were knotted up at 1-1 at the end of regulation. The score remained tied after sudden victory OT but Haught jumped out in front on a reversal in the first 30-second ride out period. Smith escaped in TB2 but Haught held on for the 3-2 win in front of his hometown crowd. Haught is now 2-0 against Smith this season after previously defeating him with a 6-4 sudden victory decision in the semis of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite. Four near fall points early in the third period sealed the tech fall for No. 3 Ty Walz in the opening bout of the match at heavyweight. Before a decision from freshman Dominic Latona at 133 that put the Hokies ahead 14-0, Dance followed Walz with his second pin of the season with 18 seconds left in the second period at 125. West Virginia's Joe Wheeling picked up a major decision at 141 but the Hokies rattled six-straight wins, including the first in the Tech career of redshirt sophomore Ryan Blees at 157, to clinch the match. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The fourth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team felt right at home at Wadsworth High School on Sunday, winning eight of the nine contested matches against Northwestern on its way to a 43-3 victory over the Wildcats in the Big Ten opener for both teams. THE SHORT STORY Bonus point victories by Jose Rodriguez, Nathan Tomasello and Luke Pletcher after three bouts gave Ohio State a quick 14-0 lead and after a forfeit by NU at 149 lbs., the Buckeyes followed that up with five more victories - two by pin - for their final point total. RODRIGUEZ, TOMASELLO START WITH TECHS Rodriguez, a redshirt freshman who is 5-0 thus far in duals and 11-2 overall, scored 14 first-period points on a takedown and three four-point near falls and then escaped the start the second period that finished off his 15-0 technical fall over the reigning Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, Anthony Rubinetti. Ranked third nationally, Tomasello racked up five first period takedowns and two four-point near falls to jump ahead of Jason Ipsarides at 133 lbs., 18-4. His takedown early in the second period gave him the 20-4 technical fall. Tomasello, who wrestled in high school at nearby Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, improved to 7-0 on the year. PLETCHER STAYS UNBEATEN After winning four matches yesterday at the Cleveland State Open, Pletcher, a true freshman, improved to 14-0 on the year by dispatching Alec McKenna at 141 lbs., 18-6. Pletcher led just 2-0 after the first period but turned up the heat in the second, taking McKenna down four times to build an 11-3 lead. 149 FORFEIT, RYAN PIN Northwestern forfeited at 149 lbs., setting the state for the first of two falls on the afternoon. Redshirt sophomore Jake Ryan needed just 1:12 to finish off Ben Sullivan. Ryan led 4-1 at the time of the pin and improved to 9-6 on the year. BURCHER WINS A CLOSE ONE In one of the most entertaining matches of the afternoon, Cody Burcher scored the decisive point in his 7-6 decision against Johnny Sebastian on an escape the start the third period. He led 5-2 early in the second period following a four-point nearfall gave up a reversal and takedown before the 2:00 were out. His win gave the Buckeyes a 29-0 lead in the dual. JORDAN, MARTIN, MOORE SCORE BONUS POINTS No. 1-ranked Bo Jordan's pin of Braxton Cody at 174 lbs. took just 1:04 and before that was highlighted by four quick takedowns. At 184 lbs., Myles Martin won his 13th match of the year with a workman-like 14-5 major decision over 16th-ranked Mitch Sliga. Martin took Sliga down six times and added a bonus point for riding time. Kollin Moore also scored often in his bout at 197 vs. Jacob Berkowitz, getting four third-period takedowns to break open a close match and winning 19-9. In the final bout of the afternoon, Northwestern closed out the dual with a 5-0 victory by Conan Jennings over Josh Fox at heavyweight. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team posted a 22-19 win at Kent State this afternoon. The Mocs won five individual matches to even their record at 3-3, while splitting the two duals on this Ohio trip. "It was great to close out the semester with a win and some positive momentum," stated head coach Heath Eslinger. "Our guys have been working hard, so it was good to get the result. We are starting for figure some things out and you will see us continue to get better as we move into next semester." Action opened at 165 with junior Justin Lampe jumping all over Isaac Bast. Lampe scored a pin in less than a minute for a 6-0 Chattanooga lead. It was Lampe's second win of the weekend as he improved to 6-3 overall. Senior Sean Mappes followed that with a 6-1 decision over Jared Walker at 174. Junior Bryce Carr improved to 9-1 on the year with a major decision at 184. LAS VEGAS -- Two-time Junior World Team member Hayden Tuma wowed the crowd with his 59-kilogram finals win over Ryan Mango to win his first U.S. Senior Nationals title. In a match that lasted 48 seconds, Tuma tallied a big four-pointer to put Mango in danger of being pinned, and then lifted the two-time U.S. National Team member for a high-flying five-point throw that sealed him the 2017 U.S. Senior National title. "I took a nap earlier and I had visualized getting a takedown to the back, and if he bridges hard enough, I'm just going to lift him from his back and throw again. It actually worked out how I dreamt it so it's kind of weird," Tuma said. "I keep hearing about [visualization] more and more from older athletes that have been there before, and I thought that was something that I could work into my habits and incorporate into my wrestling and it's really paying off." LAS VEGAS -- The poise of two-time Olympian Elena Pirozhkova carried the day in the finals of the U.S. Senior Nationals. In her first competition since finishing in fifth place at the Olympic Games, Pirozhkova held off a second-period charge from Olympic Trials champion Tamyra Mensah to win the 69-kilogram/152-pound women's freestyle title. "Me and [Mensah] know each other pretty well. She was my training partner for Rio, so we've been sparring with each other a lot. A GoFundMe.com page has been established for the father of Ohio State wrestler Alex Sepeda as his dad Jesse battles esophageal cancer. Sepeda familyKyle Snyder, 2016 Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler and NCAA champ for Ohio State, alerted the wrestling community by posting the following message on his Twitter account: "Please help my teammate and great friend. Click on the link and donate!" The GoFundMe page for Jesse Sepeda, established Friday, has already raised more than $5,500 of its ultimate goal of $75,000 for the Sepeda family in the first day of its existence. The fund is intended to "bring some relief and comfort to Alex and his family, contributing to Jesse's fight against cancer," according to the family's GoFundMe page. "The funds would be used for expenses such as out of pocket expenses for multiple prescriptions and medical bills, and daily expenses for radiation and chemotherapy treatments as well as the necessary transportation." The GoFundMe page reports that Jesse Sepeda had been complaining of difficulty swallowing. While thinking it was a reflux issue, he followed up with his family doctor, which prescribed medication. After a second visit, the elder Sepeda mentioned pain in his left calf. The day before Thanksgiving, the doctor sent him for an ultrasound which revealed a blood clot. He was immediately treated him with blood thinners. When the pain did not subside, Jesse Sepeda was hospitalized. An endoscopy revealed a mass at the base of his esophagus; a biopsy indicated it was positive for esophageal cancer. Since then, a CAT scan revealed the cancer had spread into his liver, lungs and lymph nodes (Stage IV Metastasis esophageal cancer), which is inoperable and incurable. Jesse Sepeda is now undoing aggressive chemotherapy. In addition to the GoFundMe page, a "Jesse's Support Page" has been established on Facebook, featuring a photo of a number of Ohio State wrestlers -- including Kyle Snyder -- posing with a framed, signed team photo wishing Jesse Sepeda well. In his first year as a Buckeye, Alex Sepeda wrestled in 12 matches during the 2015-16 season. Prior to that, Sepeda wrestled at Marysville High School just northwest of Columbus, where, as a senior, he was a OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) Division I state wrestling championships runner-up at 160 pounds.

Jim Vollrath compiled a career record of 72-24 at Penn State (Photo/Bill Ennis) James "Jimmy" Vollrath, who wrestled for Penn State from 2009-2014, died Friday from Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Vollrath, competing for the Nittany Lions at 157 pounds, compiled a 72-24 in his collegiate career. Among his PSU highlights: winning ESU Open title in 2010, and defeating eventual three-time NCAA champ Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State and eventually placing second at the prestigious 2013 Southern Scuffle. A native of Richboro, Pa., Vollrath graduated from Penn State with a degree in kinesiology. Penn State wrestling tweeted out this tribute on Saturday: "We mourn the loss of our teammate, our friend and our brother James Vollrath. Our hearts are heavy but our memories of him are joyous. Our thoughts are with his family.'' Prior to coming to Happy Valley, Vollrath wrestled at Council Rock South High School at 145 pounds, where he compiled a 132-45 mark, and was a PIAA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association) state championships place winner in 2009, following in his father's footsteps, as Bill Vollrath placed third at the PIAAs for Hatboro-Horsham at 132 pounds in 1973, according to Pennsylvania wrestling journalist Tom Elling. This summer, Vollrath's girlfriend, Taryn Marino, established a GoFundMe.com page for Vollrath's cancer battle, which stated at time that the former wrestler had been recently diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma cancer. As of Saturday, the page had raised over $60,000, exceeding the original goal of $50,000. WebMD.com describes Ewing's sarcoma as "a very rare type of cancerous tumor that grows in your bones or the soft tissue around your bones, such as cartilage or the nerves." The website goes on to say Ewing's sarcoma affects about 200 children and young adults in the U.S. each year. "He fought valiantly and had great support from his family and his wrestling family at Penn State," Elling told InterMat. "I didn't know Jim well, but knew he had great family values." Update: Services have been announced for Jim Vollrath. The viewing is scheduled for Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Bede the Venerable Church, 1071 Holland Road in Northampton, Pa. The viewing will continue Thursday from 8 to 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10.

Charleston, S.C. -- The Northern Illinois University wrestling team was victorious over the Bulldogs of The Citadel, 38-3. The Huskies won nine of the 10 matches as they improved to 4-2 on the season. At the conclusion of the meet, NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig discussed how he felt the team performed. "I'm proud of the way we came out firing and stayed on the gas today. Alijah Jeffery set the tone with a quick fall," said Ludwig. The meet started at the 133-pound weight class and was over before fans could sit in their seats. Redshirt Sophomore Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) recorded the first pin of the day within 48 seconds. Steve Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) gave the Huskies a convincing lead, 11-3, after defeating Ty Buckiso in technical fall fashion, 17-2. Perhaps the most intense dual of the day came in the 157-pound weight class. Redshirt freshman Caden McWhirter (Pratville, Ala./Pratville) continued his dual success by defeating the Bulldogs' returning NCAA qualifier, Aaron Walker. Despite the clock being out, McWhirter was able to secure a 6-0 lead in the first period. Walker fought back in the second and brought the score within one-point. The two traded points in the third but McWhirter held onto his lead and eventually came out on top, winning by decision, 15-11. Walker hasn't lost a dual match since Jan. 9th, 2015. STILLWATER -- The top-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team improved its undefeated record to 5-0 Friday night, coming back to defeat No. 8 Cornell, 23-19, in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Senior Anthony Collica provided the highlight of the dual, pinning Joey Galasso in 3:31 to put the Cowboys up six with two matches remaining and allowing Joe Smith to seal the win for the Cowboys with a major decision over Kyle Simaz in his first action of the year. "I don't think we had a great match, but at the same time I was glad we grinded out matches that we needed to win," head coach John Smith said. "Preston Weigel -- I'm not sure if he would've found a way to win that type of match last year, but it was good to see him find a way to win. Of course, Kaid Brock and that group from 133 to 157 ended up being pretty important for us to win those four straight matches. Not the perfect match, but Cornell looked like a team that was more seasoned than us in a lot of different positions. It'll help us." Cornell jumped up early, taking a 7-0 lead after taking the first two matches of the night. Cowboy senior Kyle Crutchmer dropped the first match of the night, 3-2, to sixth-ranked Brian Realbuto at 174 pounds for his first loss of the season. Senior Nolan Boyd was defeated by top-ranked Gabe Dean in a 14-6 major decision at 184 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Preston Weigel got the Cowboys on the board at 197 pounds, gutting out a 3-2 decision over Cornell's Ben Honis thanks to a takedown with 40 seconds remaining in the match that put the Russell, Kan., product on top. Heavyweight Austin Schafer continued the strong start to his senior season, recording a 7-3 decision over Craig Scott that would pull Oklahoma State within one of the Big Red. Schafer led throughout the match and moved to a perfect 8-0 on the season with the win. Moving back down to 125 pounds, Cornell halted the Cowboys' momentum as Noah Baughman notched a non-control fall over redshirt freshman Nick Piccininni late in the second period. The fall dug the Cowboys into a 13-6 hole with five matches to go. Redshirt freshman Kaid Brock sparked the Cowboys at 133 with a major decision over 17th-ranked Mark Grey that was the first of four-straight wins for OSU. Leading, 4-1, after one period, Brock turned it on in the second, outscoring Grey, 9-3, to seize control of the match. The win was Brock's second of the season over a ranked opponent and moved him to 5-1 for his career against ranked foes. Top-ranked Dean Heil evened the team score at 13 apiece after a 6-1 decision at 141 pounds. The win pushed his perfect record on the year to 9-0. Collica gave the lead to the Cowboys for good with his pin. The senior started hot, picking up three takedowns and a nearfall halfway through the first to eventually lead 13-4 after one. Collica continued that aggressiveness in the second, picking up a couple more takedowns before finally getting Galasso on his back for the fall. The win was Collica's second-straight bonus point victory, moving him to 4-0 overall this season. "I know we started slow, so I had to change something up," Collica said. "I just came out a little tougher. I expected a tough match because every guy on their team wrestled tough. Coming out tough made the difference." Smith sealed the win for OSU in his return to the mat, posting a 15-6 major decision over Simaz to put the Cowboys on top, 23-13. ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling team (3-3) picked up its third dual win with a 26-13 victory at the Convocation Center on Friday (Dec. 16) over Chattanooga, closing out the schedule until the Bobcats resume at Midlands. Sophomore Shakur Laney set the tone in the first match of the day, pinning down Alonzo Allen in the first period. “We worked hard all week. didn't really give them a break and I think it paid off tonight,” said head coach Joel Greenlee. “I think we are getting closer to where we want to be. Even in the matches we lost I though we gave them all that they could handle.” 125 – No. 17 Shakur Laney v. Alonzo Allen In the first match of the day, sophomore Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) faced off against Alonzo Allen at 125-pounds. In the first period Laney took down Allen at the 1:20 mark and pinned him for a victory (1:56). 133 – No. 18 Cameron Kelly v. Chris Debien Sophomore Cam Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) took on Chris Debien at 133-pounds. After the first period Kelly led 6-2, thanks to two takedowns and an escape. KENT, Ohio -- Gardner-Webb picked up a pivotal decision at 157 pounds from Ryan Mosley and got a pin from heavyweight Boyce Cornwell to clinch a 22-17 win at Kent State Friday night. It marked Gardner-Webb's first win over Kent State in eight tries. The Runnin' Bulldogs (4-2) fell behind early, as Kent State picked up major decisions at 125 and 133 pounds for a quick 8-0 lead. Ryan Hull fought hard at 141 pounds for the 'Dogs before falling, 7-5, to Chance Driscoll, as the hosts pulled out to an 11-0 advantage with seven weight classes remaining. Chris Vassar quickly put Gardner-Webb back in the match, pinning Tim Rooney in only 1:55 at 149 pounds to trim the lead to 11-6. Mosley followed with a hard-fought win at 157, beating Golden Flashes standout Casey Sparkman, 3-1, to pull the 'Dogs within two team points. BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The Lock Haven University wrestling team (3-3, 2-1 EWL) won six of 10 bouts and downed local-rival Bloomsburg University (3-6, 0-2 EWL) 27-12 in the battle of Interstate-80. The win was LHU's third straight over Bloomsburg and pushed Lock Haven to 2-1 in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action. Jake Field (South Elgin, Ill./Marmion Academy), Ronnie Perry (Christiana, Pa./Solanco), Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), Tristan Sponseller (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Ohio State) all won for the Bald Eagles, who picked up their second straight dual win. LHU is back to .500 on the season and sits at 3-3 overall. Field got the Bald Eagles rolling with a hard-fought 9-6 win at 125 pounds. Field took Bloomsburg's Willy Girard down three times in the first period and led 6-2 after one period. Field controlled the second period as well despite an escape point from Girard and led 6-3 after two. Both wrestlers managed to score third-period takedowns, but Field held on for the 9-6 decision, which put Lock Haven up 3-0. Bloomsburg tied the match at 3-3 after Matt Noble posted a victory at 133. Noble edged Lewis Williams (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) 5-3 in a tightly-contested bout. Lewis, a Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania native was competing in dual action for the first time since November 20. At 141, Perry, who is ranked as high as No. 13 in some national polls, pulled ranked on Bloomsburg's Grant Bond in a dominating tech fall victory.
