PHILADELPHIA -- The Drexel wrestling team closed out its second win of the day Saturday night, downing the Hofstra Pride at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 36-2. Drexel began the day in Lancaster, Pa. where it cruised past the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats, 40-6. Back on their home mat at night, it was more of the same dominance for the Dragons. Drexel has now won four matches in a row, improving to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the EIWA with the win. Hofstra falls to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the EIWA. After starting the night with six points on the board after a Hofstra forfeit at 141 pounds, the Dragons jumped on the Pride early to grow the lead to an insurmountable 25-0. No. 17 Matthew Cimato worked a 4-1 decision over Ryan Burkert at 149 pounds, before 157-pounder Willie Davis tied things up with riding time to send his match against Jake Kaminsky into extra time where he would get a quick takedown for the 17-15 sudden victory. Austin Rose followed up the back-to-back decisions with a win by fall, his second of the day, just 1:56 into his match against Bobby Fehr. The Dragons kept the momentum going at 174 pounds where redshirt freshman Ebed Jarrell came away with an 8-7 decision over Sage Heller after riding time was added, then Alex DeCiantis used a late takedown right before the third period buzzer to earn the 14-5 major decision at 184 pounds over Michael Oxley to put the match out of reach for the Pride. At 197 pounds, former Dragon Nezar Haddad took a 2-1 decision over his former practice partner Joshua Murphy in a tiebreaker. At heavyweight, No. 15 ranked Joey Goodhart outlasted Omar Haddad, 4-1, to send it back to the lightweights with the match in hand. After the 285-pound match, one point was deducted from both teams for technical fouls. Zack Fuentes brought the match to Jacob Martin from the opening whistle of the 125-pound match and worked his way to a second period win by fall at the 4:39 mark of the match. No. 13 ranked Kevin Devoy Jr. closed out the match with a 7-1 decision over Vinny Vespa to give the Dragons the 36-2 victory. PITTSBORO, N.C. -- Bonus points proved to be critical on Saturday night as the No. 24 Virginia wrestling team (9-5, 1-2 ACC) went on the road and defeated No. 25 North Carolina (6-6, 1-3 ACC) by a score of 22-15. The contest was held at Northwoods High School after a water emergency in Chapel Hill, N.C., forced the match to be moved. After trailing early, the Cavaliers got wins from Tyler Askey (Newnan, Ga.), Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas), Will Mason (Virginia Beach, Va.), George DiCamillo (Highland Heights, Ohio) and Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) to secure the victory. The bonus point victories from DiCamillo, Mason and Mueller proved to be critical as Virginia and North Carolina each won five weight classes. The match started at 165 pounds and the Tar Heels grabbed the first two victories before Askey would get the Cavaliers on the board with a 6-2 decision over Anderson Pope at 184 pounds. North Carolina would continue to build on the lead, grabbing victories in the next two weight classes and holding a 12-3 lead overall as the lineup flipped back to the 125 pounds. The Cavaliers then went to work with three nationally-ranked wrestlers in the final five weight classes. Eighth-ranked Mueller got things started with a 14-3 major decision over James Szymanski at 125 pounds to cut the UNC lead to four points. Mason then picked up six points for the Cavaliers at 133 pounds, holding a 13-2 lead before an injury forced the Tar Heels' Nicholas Lirette to default. The resulting six points catapulted Virginia into the match lead. The premier matchup of the night came at 141 pounds with No. 7 DiCamillo facing No. 5 Joey Ward. The Cavalier senior picked up his eighth pin of the season, putting Ward on his back in 4:15 to add six more points to the scoreboard for Virginia. North Carolina won its fifth match at 149 pounds, another decision, leaving Virginia holding a four-point lead with one match to go at 157 pounds. In a thrilling first period that saw several scores and lead changes, No. 17 Atkinson battled with Carolina senior Joey Moon. With the match tied in the waning seconds of the bout, Atkinson notched an escape and picked up the 8-7 decision over Moon to secure the 22-15 match victory for the Cavaliers. Virginia will continue to wrestle on the road, facing Duke at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 5) at Card Gym. The Princeton Class of 2017 has done everything it could to change the trajectory of the wrestling program. You didn't think they'd settle for anything less than a magical final day inside Dillon Gym, did you? Four Tiger seniors combined to go 6-0 during a dominant day for Princeton, which defeated Brown 32-6 and Harvard 33-3 to improve to 7-6 on the season, 3-0 in the Ivy League. Those seniors can look to climb an even higher mountain next weekend, as they head to New York to take on Columbia (Friday, 6) and Cornell (Saturday, 3) in a chase for the program's first Ivy League championship since 1986. Both matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network. There is plenty of time to look ahead, though. Saturday was a day to celebrate the Class of 2017, while taking notice of a Tiger team that has come through the gauntlet of a loaded schedule and appears to be peaking at the opportune time. Seniors Jordan Laster and Ray O'Donnell both went 2-0 on the day, while classmates Troy Murtha and Brett Harner posted wins at 197 for Princeton, which swept the first five matches in both ends of the doubleheader to maintain complete control during the day. The highlight of the opener came from Murtha, the senior who has answered the bell at a variety of upperclass weights throughout his career. He took out Tucker Ziegler, pinning him in 2:19 to help close the convincing win over Brown. The nightcap, which began with Princeton honoring its two earliest Ivy championship teams -- including the 1967 squad on its 50th anniversary -- included wins for all three returning NCAA-qualifying seniors. Laster scored a pair of late takedowns to secure a 6-1 win at 141, while Harner fought off Logan Kirby for a 6-4 win at 197. The finale, a showdown of two of the Ivy's top heavyweights, belonged to O'Donnell, whose dominant third-period ride led the way to a 2-0 victory over Nick Gajdzik. Of course, there were plenty of other highlights, including a stirring performance from the youngest of the Tigers. Freshmen Ty Agaisse and Matthew Kolodzik both went 2-0 on the day, while Leonard Merkin may have put on one of the most thrilling shows of the day. He scored a 22-11 major decision over Peter Bearse, even though Bearse had the slight advantage in riding time. Merkin continuously put his opponent to his back, including once only seconds after he appeared to be fighting out of a cradle. A strong Dillon crowd was ignited through the match, just as they were during Mike D'Angelo's fall at 157. D'Angelo is quietly having a brilliant Ivy season. After opening with a thrilling overtime win over Penn's May Bethea, D'Angelo posted a technical fall and a pin Saturday. Princeton 32, Brown 6 125 - Ty Agaisse (P) dec. COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Behind wins in nine of 10 bouts, Mizzou Wrestling (10-3, 7-0 MAC) defeated Northern Illinois (6-7, 2-5 MAC), 38-3, in a Mid-American Conference dual on Sunday at the Hearnes Center. Five Tigers recorded bonus points in the dual, including falls from redshirt sophomore 133-pounder John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.), redshirt freshman 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.). With the victory, the Tigers have now won 28 consecutive MAC duals, dating back to Jan. 25, 2014. In those duals, Mizzou has outscored its conference opponents, 812-258. The dual began at 184 pounds, with redshirt senior 184-pounder Matt Lemanowicz (Lee's Summit, Mo.) taking the mat for the Tigers. The Tiger senior took a 2-1 lead heading into the third period and increased his lead with two takedowns and a near-fall in the final period to increase to win, 10-4, over Bryce Gorman. Senior 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) was up next against No. 12 Shawn Scott. Facing his ninth ranked opponent of the season, Cox defeated the Huskie wrestler, 16-4, recording his 13th win by bonus points this season. The major decision was the 29th of his career, moving him ahead of UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley for third-most major decisions in program history. Following Cox, Mizzou picked up back-to-back decision wins from redshirt freshman heavyweight Austin Myers (Alexandria, Ky.) and redshirt junior 125-pounder Aaron Assad (Brecksville, Ohio). With a 13-0 lead already, Erneste and Eierman quickly extended the lead to 25-0 with back-to-back pins. First, Erneste, with a 4-0 lead in the third period, got Alijah Jeffery on his back for the fall. Next, Eierman had an 8-2 lead in the second period when he got Anthony Rubino's shoulders to the mat for another six points. In the second matchup of the day featuring two ranked opponents, No. 2 Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) needed a late stall call to defeat No. 10 Steve Bleise, 2-1. Mayes forced Bleise to back up on the edge of the mat with time running out to initiate the stall call, the second of the match on Blesie. Redshirt junior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee (Reno, Nev.) was next for the Tigers against Caden McWhirter. Lavallee executed a takedown and a near-fall in the second period, followed by two more takedowns in the third to earn a 13-3 major decision. Lewis closed out the scoring for Mizzou in the 165 pound bout, pinning Shaun'Qae McMurty in the first period at 2:23. The fall for Lewis was a team-leading seventh on the season. Mizzou will next face Northern Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 12. The dual will start at 2 p.m. CT inside the Hearnes center, and will be for the MAC regular season championship, as both teams enter the dual with an unblemished record in conference duals. Oklahoma State wraps up road trip with dominant win at Kent State
InterMat Staff posted an article in Big 12
KENT, Ohio -- The top-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team wrapped up its whirlwind road trip with a dominant, 36-6 victory over Kent State on Saturday afternoon. The win moved the Cowboys to 12-0, and came less than 24 hours after the team dropped No. 24 Edinboro on Friday night in Edinboro, Pa. Despite being down three starters for the second dual this weekend, the Cowboys tallied six bonus-point victories, along with six points from a forfeit at 133 pounds. OSU turned in four major decisions on the day to go along with a pin from Anthony Collica at 149 pounds and a technical fall from Nick Piccininni at 125. "Bonus points early on gets your team rolling," Head coach John Smith said. Sometimes, when you're wrestling teams that are a little bit undermanned you can take advantage of that, so it was good to see us do that." Piccininni got back on track with a 20-5 technical fall on Saturday after a tough loss to ninth-ranked Sean Russell of Edinboro Friday night. Leading, 9-1, over Kent State's Cory Simpson after two periods, the Cowboy redshirt freshman scored five takedowns in the third on the way to an 11-point period to finish off the tech in 6:25, his sixth of the season. After redshirt freshman Kaid Brock was awarded the win by forfeit at 133 pounds, Ohio natives Dean Heil and Anthony Collica piled on to boost OSU's lead to 21-0. Heil used three takedowns in the third to finish off a 16-5 major decision over Chance Driscoll at 141 pounds. The win served as the 2016 NCAA Champion's 20th-straight win and boosted his undefeated record on the season to 21-0. Fresh off his 100th career win Friday night, Collica would put the exclamation mark on a hot start for the Cowboys with his second pin of the season, decking Kent State's Tim Rooney in 4:52 to move to 15-1 for his senior campaign. Davey Dolan turned in the first of two losses for the Cowboys Saturday, as he came up short, 11-5, to No. 30 Casey Sparkman at 157 pounds. Derek White would also drop his match to Stephen Suglio at 197 pounds. "Our two losses at 157 and 197 just weren't enough," Smith said. "We need to stay in a little better position, and we need to score defensively. We just didn't get it done." Redshirt sophomore Chandler Rogers had no trouble putting points on the board at 165 pounds, scoring seven takedowns and a nearfall for the 20-7 major decision over Jared Walker. The win was a nice rebound from Friday night against Edinboro, which saw the Stillwater native suffer a fall at the hands of No. 17 Austin Matthews. Senior Kyle Crutchmer got in on the bonus-point action at 174 pounds, as he handled Kent State's Isaac Bast, 19-6, for his third major of the season. Crutchmer led, 6-2, heading into the third, but opened up the match late with five takedowns in the final frame that would lock up the major decision and his 13th win of the season. "The coaches have really been stressing putting up points and getting takedowns," Crutchmer said. "Anytime you're on a road trip, it can be a little harder. (Bast) came out firing at the beginning, but you just move forward and push the pace. I ended up scoring a couple of takedowns, which is really good for me at this point in the season." After gutting out a 10-8 win over Edinboro's Dakota Greer on Friday night, senior Nolan Boyd registered a 7-0 decision over Shane Mast at 184 pounds to improve to 16-3 for the year. Despite only getting the decision, Boyd was in control throughout, as he racked up over six minutes of riding time in the win. Redshirt sophomore Tanner Allen had an impressive day at heavyweight for the Pokes, as he posted a 10-2 major decision over Devin Nye for the first dual win of his career. Allen jumped up early with a pair of takedowns in the opening period and never looked back, adding a couple more scores in the final frame to finish off the victory. "That was nice to see," Smith said. "Those guys look forward to opportunities, and I thought he had a good outing against one of the top 10 heavyweights at Edinboro, and I thought he followed it up today with a good outing. You don't often see a heavyweight score four takedowns in a match, so it was good to see and it was a good win for him." The Cowboys now look ahead to their final weekend of the regular season that will bring Big 12 foes Wyoming and Oklahoma into Gallagher-Iba Arena next weekend. OSU will face Wyoming Friday night at 7:30 p.m., before returning to host the 15th-ranked Sooners on Sunday at 2 p.m. Results: 125: No. 12 Nick Piccininni (OSU) TF Cory Simpson (KSU) 20-5 133: No. 3 Kaid Brock wins by forfeit 141: No. 1 Dean Heil (OSU) MD Chance Dricoll (KSU) 16-5 149: No. 3 Anthony Collica (OSU) fall Tim Rooney (KSU) 4:52 157: No. 30 Casey Sparkman (KSU) dec. ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell senior Gabe Dean became the school's career leader in bonus point wins with a first-minute fall as ninth-ranked Cornell dominated the second half of the meet in a 34-9 win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at University Gymnasium. The Big Red improved to 10-2 on the season while extending its Ivy League win streak to 76 matches. Dean earned the fall over Jacob Young just 38 seconds into his match to collect his 94th bonus point victory, surpassing four-time All-American Cam Simaz (93). His 18th win by fall of the season also matched Kyle Dake's senior campaign on the single season charts and has pinned five straight opponents. He has collected falls in each of his three Ivy League matches, wrestling a total of 6:35 - not even one full period. Thirteen of his pins this season have come in the first period. Dean's continued dominance overshadowed an early Big Red deficit, as Columbia led 9-3 after three matches. Cornell answered in a big way - seven consecutive wins to cruise to the victory. Noah Baughman opened the match with a hard-fought 4-0 win over Johnson Mai at 125, but the Lions responded with a fall at 133 and a third period tilt that allowed for a Columbia decision at 141. Jonathan Furnas got Cornell back within 9-6 with a 5-1 victory over Sam Ward, and Taylor Simaz put the visitors in the lead for good with a first period fall over Tyler Oberg at 157. Senior Brian Realbuto's pin at 174 put the Big Red on the verge of winning, then Dean's fall put Cornell over the top for the program's 74th straight win over an unranked opponent. the nationally-ranked Big Red also scored bonus points from Jake Anderson at 197, an 11-2 winner over Michael Bulkin. Two of the more exciting matches of the night came at 165 and 285, with Cornell coming out on top in both. Brandon Womack gained a takedown in the final 10 seconds to knock off Tyrel White, 3-1, and Craig Scott's third period reversal after Garrett Ryan tied the match with a takedown ended with a 6-2 Big Red victory. Cornell will have a chance to clinch its 15th straight Ivy title next weekend when both Penn (Friday, Feb. 10) and Princeton (Saturday, Feb. 11) visit the Friedman Wrestling Center. LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Senior Victor Lopez registered his 100th career victory with a dominating tech fall performance and Bucknell had five total victories for bonus points as the Bison wrestling team defeated Sacred Heart 31-9 Saturday afternoon in Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell (9-4, 6-1 EIWA) has now won seven consecutive duals as it improved to 9-0 this year against unranked opponents. The Pioneers fell to 2-10, 0-5 EIWA. Lopez, who is one of three Bison to be nationally ranked, was the highlight of the day. The NCAA qualifier became the ninth wrestler in program history to reach 100 career wins with a 17-2 victory over Paul Curtin. Lopez built an early 10-0 lead with a takedown and a pair of four-point near falls in the first period. The riding time point propelled him to the tech fall, one of three by Bucknell wrestlers on the day. Lopez is now 100-49 in his career and is just six victories behind eighth place on the program's career wins list. Current Bison assistant coach Kevin LeValley sits atop the list with 127 career victories. Tom Sleigh (197 pounds) and Tyler Greene (285) ended the match with back-to-back wins by tech fall, outscoring their opponents by a combined 35-2 in 6:49. Sleigh defeated Mark Boyle 18-2 in 4:30 for his 16th straight victory, while Greene shut out John Hartnett 17-0 in 2:19 for his sixth consecutive win. Collin Boylan posted a major decision at 165 pounds, tallying four takedowns and a reversal in the second period, while Jordan Gessner was awarded a forfeit at 125 pounds for the Bison, who eclipsed 30 points in a dual match for the third time this season. Joey Gould registered a 3-0 decision at 133 pounds, while Tyler Smith won by a 7-2 decision at 141 to round out the list of Bucknell winners. Chad Reese narrowly lost at 174 for the Bison. He scored two third-period takedowns and was on the verge of getting a bout-tying one as the time expired in the third period, giving Dom Celli the 8-6 victory. Bucknell improved to 6-0 all-time against Sacred Heart as it completed a 2-0 weekend. The Bison defeated American 29-4 on Friday evening. Bucknell will wrap up its three-match homestand next Friday, Feb. 10, when it hosts Binghamton in Davis Gym. The Bison have just three dual matches remaining in the regular season. Iowa's Thomas Gilman is 20-0 and ranked No. 1 at 125 pounds (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) No. 10 Minnesota hosts No. 3 Iowa on Super Bowl Sunday at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis. The dual meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. It will mark the 102nd meeting between the two Big Ten wrestling powers. The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series 72-28-1, and have won the last two meetings. Below are five matchups to watch in the dual meet. 125: No. 6 Ethan Lizak (Minnesota) vs. No. 1 Thomas Gilman (Iowa) Gilman improved to 20-0 this season after picking up a 21-8 major decision victory over Wisconsin's Jens Lantz on Friday night. The top-ranked Hawkeye senior has earned bonus points in 18 of his 20 wins. He topped No. 2 Nick Suriano 3-2 on Jan. 20, giving the Penn State true freshman phenom his only loss. Lizak, a 2015 NCAA qualifier who redshirted last season, was suspended from official competition until January. He made his return to the Gopher lineup for the Southern Scuffle, and claimed the title in dominant fashion. He comes into the dual meet with a 20-3 record, with two of his losses coming to Nebraska's Tim Lambert and the other to Suriano. No. 17 Mitchell McKee (Minnesota) vs. No. 4 Cory Clark (Iowa) Clark, a two-time NCAA runner-up, was listed as Iowa's probable starter this weekend, but did not get the start on Friday night against Wisconsin, so it remains to be seen if he will wrestle against Minnesota. He last competed on Jan. 20 against Penn State when he won by technical fall over George Carpenter. He is currently 10-1 this season, with his lone loss coming to Oklahoma State's Kaid Brock, 7-6, on Jan. 15. McKee, a six-time Fargo champion, was one of the nation's top recruits last year. He stepped right into the Gopher lineup and has put together a productive true freshman campaign. McKee placed fifth at the Southern Scuffle, and has gone 3-2 in Big Ten matches since. He was blanked 4-0 in his last match by Purdue's Luke Welch. 141: No. 12 Tommy Thorn (Minnesota) vs. Topher Carton (Iowa) Thorn, like Lizak, was suspended until January, so he didn't make his debut in the Gopher lineup until January at the Southern Scuffle. At the Scuffle, Thorn, a returning NCAA qualifier, lost narrowly to NCAA champion Dean Heil of Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals, 3-2, and wound up finishing in seventh place. Since the Scuffle, he has won 3 of 5 matches, with losses coming to Penn State's Jimmy Gulibon and Nebraska's Colton McCrystal. Carton has had a successful senior season. He enters the match with a record of 18-5. He snapped a three-match losing streak on Friday night by hammering No. 16 Cole Martin of Wisconsin 9-1. 157: No. 9 Jake Short (Minnesota) vs. No. 2 Michael Kemerer (Iowa) Kemerer has been one of the nation's freshmen this season. He became the first Hawkeye freshman since Matt McDonough in 2009-10 to win his first 19 matches. Kemerer enters the match with a 21-1 record this season. His lone loss came to top-ranked Jason Nolf of Penn State, 9-4, on Jan. 20. He was a Midlands champion in late December. Kemerer has earned bonus points in 14 of his 21 wins this season. Short, a returning NCAA qualifier, has had an up-and-down season. He won a title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, and placed fifth at the Southern Scuffle. However, he has gone 5-5 over his last 10 matches, with two of those losses coming to lower ranked wrestlers. 165: No. 15 Nick Wanzek (Minnesota) vs. Joey Gunther (Iowa) Wanzek, a returning NCAA qualifier, started the season at 174 pounds. He placed at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, and compiled a 12-4 mark over the first half of the season at 174 pounds. In January, Wanzek made the move down to 165 pounds and competed there at the Southern Scuffle where he placed fourth, losing twice to Northern Iowa's Bryce Steiert. He comes into the match riding a three-match winning streak. Gunther has been a pleasant surprise for the Hawkeyes. He comes in with a record of 12-5. While he has dropped four of his last five matches, three of those losses have come against wrestlers ranked in the top five at 165 pounds. In his most recent match on Friday night, Gunther took returning NCAA finalist Isaac Jordan to sudden victory before losing 3-1.

U.S. wrestlers scheduled to compete at the 2017 Freestyle World Cup event have weighed in with their opinions on the Iranian government denying the athletes visas to the tournament in Iran in less than two weeks. On Friday, IRNA, the official Iranian news agency, reported that a special committee reviewing the case for U.S wrestlers had chosen to deny visas. IRNA quoted Iran foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi as saying a special committee reviewed the case of the U.S. team for the tournament, and "eventually the visit ... was opposed." The denial is Iran's response to President Donald J. Trump's executive order banning visas for seven Muslim-majority countries including Iran. Here are reactions of a handful of U.S. wrestlers who were slated to make the trip to the World Cup, scheduled for Feb. 16-17 in the western Iranian city of Kermanshah. Jordan Burroughs "Bummed, first and foremost," is how 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs described his feelings to NBC Sports. "I just wanted to compete. It's been a while since I competed. I was excited to return to the mat. This was going to be a prestigious event that I got to do with my team members." "Not only is this costly in terms of our training and competition schedule, but this is expensive," Burroughs continued. "This is an expensive lesson learned to buy 20 tickets to Iran, have them revoked and probably no reimbursement." "Training comes to a halt. We're like 'OK, what do we do now? Where do we go? Where do we compete?'" said the four-time world champion. "I'm just bummed. I love Iran. I love their people, and I don't get into politics. I wasn't going to make a political stance. I was going to compete." "There is such a common respect for wrestlers in Iran," Burroughs said. "They love wrestling. They're huge fans of mine. I'm bummed about that. I really wanted to be part of something great in what I consider a great country. Obviously, my views and our country's views are different." The U.S. has sent wrestlers to meets in Iran a total of 15 times since 1998, with Burroughs part of the contingent at the 2013 Freestyle World Cup in Tehran. Conversely, Iranian wrestlers have competed in the U.S. a number of times, including last year's World Cup in Los Angeles. "No one out there -- Donald Trump or the prime minister of Iran -- is purposely slighting the U.S. wrestling team," Burroughs said. "This is a much bigger picture and a much bigger story than our wrestling tournaments, but I'm bummed because I think this was a great opportunity for us to show goodwill toward them by coming into a country where our governments may have opposed each other." ''These decisions, these executive decisions, are always so far beyond your reach,'' Burroughs told the Associated Press. ''Like, you always feel like 'Well, the presidency or these strict laws or these Muslim bans or whatever you like to call them, they'll never affect me.' This is one of the few times where something so personal has occurred. Almost like it (was) handed down from the president to us." Kyle Snyder at the 2016 World Cup in Los Angeles (Photo/Tony Rotundo, WrestlersAreWarriors.com) Kyle Snyder "It's kind of a difficult situation, because at any moment, it could change," Kyle Snyder, 2016 Olympic gold medalist and Maryland native, told the Baltimore Sun Friday. "I was more hopeful early in the week, but it would be great if it happens. It's an important meet for us. It's an important meet for Iran. It's an important meet for the sport." "Every Iranian I have come into contact with, there's a language barrier, but they've always been respectful to the U.S., and we've always been respectful to them," the Ohio State junior said. "They're good people, every guy I've met." "I wasn't happy about it because I was excited to compete in the World Cup," Snyder said to the Columbus Dispatch Friday morning. "It's one of my favorite events, and I was going to get some matches that would have really been productive in my development. It could have helped my future in how I want to compete, and I could have learned about myself. "But it is what it is. There's nothing I can really do about it. I'm not going to let it really affect me. I'm just going to go about the rest of my week and keep training. Now there will be a couple more Ohio State matches that I can make." Snyder added that if the decision is reversed, he would feel no reservations about traveling to Iran. "If they grant access for us to go, I'm not worried about my safety," the 2016 NCAA heavyweight champ said. "I don't think they would grant the access if that was an issue." Zack Rey Zack Rey, who wrestles at 125 kilograms/275 pounds and was slated to compete at the 2017 World Cup, had competed in Tehran, Iran in 2014 as part of another U.S. team. "We were wrestling in an arena about half the size of what the NCAA tournament would wrestle in, but the crowd was still 20,000 people," the 2011 NCAA heavyweight champ for Lehigh University told the Allentown (Pa.) Morning Call. "You couldn't see any walkways, any stairways. People were on top of vending booths." Here's how Rey described those Iranian fans: "Screaming with enthusiasm, and very knowledgeable of the sport. Win or lose, whoever was on the mat, they had a great appreciation for you because you were a wrestler." "Jordan Burroughs beat their world finalist [Ezzatollah Akbari Zarinkolaei] and they gave him the longest standing ovation of the night because they have such a great respect," Rey said. "I was like his bodyguard when we left the arena. People wanted to hug him and get his autograph and get their picture taken with him." David Taylor David Taylor, a two-time NCAA champ and four-time Big Ten titlewinner for Penn State, was planning to wrestle for the U.S. at the 2017 World Cup. "Ultimately, to have the opportunity to wrestle at the World Cup would have been good," Taylor told WHIO, a Dayton TV station based not far from St. Paris, Ohio, where he won four state titles for the storied Graham High School wrestling program. "I was looking forward to wrestling in Iran. Their fans are great, in terms of their support for the sport. But I love my country and I want what's best for the United States." "The World Cup is a premier event, but in terms of options outside of it, we're talking through different scenarios," Taylor said. "Between everyone, we'll go with what's best for the United States moving forward. We'll be ready to wrestle at a moment's notice and we'll continue to look forward." Logan Stieber Fellow Ohioan Logan Stieber was blunt in his assessment of the 2017 World Cup situation. "It stinks," Stieber, who joined the elite group of four-time NCAA champs as an Ohio State wrestler in 2015, told the Columbus Dispatch. "It would have been a great tournament to compete in. With all the political stuff going on, I can't say I'm surprised. It's unfortunate, but it's probably better and safer to let things cool down before doing that type of travel." "The politics of what's happening now definitely overpowers any type of athletics," Stieber continued. "I'll move on and try to find another tournament to compete in. I had a little while (after the Freestyle World Cup) until I was to compete again. I have to look at my schedule and see what I can find."

FARGO, N.D. -- Behind six individual victories and clutch wins from Kimball Bastian and Will Sumner, the Utah Valley University wrestling team defeated No. 23 North Dakota State in Big 12 Conference action on Friday evening at the Scheels Center in Fargo. With the upset win, the Wolverines improve to 5-3 on the season and 2-1 in Big 12 dual meets while the nationally ranked Bison drop to 12-4 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 action. "We've been working really hard on improving every week and we progressed again tonight. We did some things very well, including attacking more than we have been as of late," said head coach Greg Williams. "North Dakota State is a good team and I felt like we did well in dictating the action most of the time. But we did have some lulls that we'll need to correct for tomorrow night (Saturday) against an even higher ranked team (No. 19 South Dakota State)". Trevor Willson (141 pounds) and Grant LaMont (149) led the way for UVU on the night by each winning their matches by bonus points, which included a big first-period fall from LaMont, while Kimball Bastian (174), Will Sumner (184), Tanner Orndorff (197) and Dustin Dennison (heavyweight) all won their respective bouts by decision. Dennison highlighted the latter group of Utah Valley grapplers, as he scored a 9-3 upset win over No. 25 Ben Tynan. "The big pin from Grant was huge for us, so was Dustin's win over No. 25 Tynan. Dustin truly dominated the match and looked great." added Williams. "Those two matches were key for us here tonight." After the Bison deadlocked the score at 16-all after the eighth match of the night, the 31st-ranked Bastian helped UVU regain the lead with a 9-3 decision over NDSU's Dylan Urbach in a must-win bout. The 174-pound Wolverine recorded four takedowns and an escape to improve to 18-9 on the year and give UVU a 19-16 advantage with just one match to go. Sumner then sealed the win for the Wolverines by hanging on to defeat NDSU's Tyler McNutt by a point in a tightly contested 6-5 decision. Following a scoreless opening period, the Wolverine 184-pounder Sumner managed to pick up a reversal to take a 2-0 lead. After giving up an escape, the UVU sophomore then secured a takedown late in the second period to extend his lead to 4-1. With Sumner later holding to a 6-2 lead, McNutt managed to record a late escape followed by a last-second takedown but it wasn't enough as the Sumner managed to hold on for the decisive victory. The contest marked just Utah Valley's second all-time win over North Dakota State and its second victory of the season over a nationally ranked foe, as it previously defeated No. 23 Oregon State on Dec. 15 by criteria (17-16). With the dual beginning at 197 pounds, 24th-ranked Orndorff and Dennison (heavyweight) got the Wolverines off to a strong start with a back-to-back victories to give UVU an early 6-0 lead. Trailing NDSU's Cordell Eaton 4-3 midway through the second stanza, Orndorff (19-10) managed to secure a takedown followed by a third-period escape to defeat Eaton by a score of 6-4. The 19-6 Dennison then followed with a 9-4 upset win over No. 25 Ben Tynan to extend Utah Valley's lead. The Wolverine heavyweight scored a trio of takedowns in the bout coupled with a reversal and a riding time point to easily defeat the ranked Tynan by a score of 9-4. The Bison then took their only lead of the night, at 7-6, following consecutive wins from No. 4 Joshua Rodriguez (125) and No. 25 Cam Sykora (133), but back answered UVU with a pair of bonus-point wins from Willson (141) and LaMont (149) to regain the lead. The senior Willson started the rally for Utah Valley by dominating his match over NDSU's Taylor Nein. Willson erupted out to an 11-0 lead en route to earning a 12-1 major decision over Nein to give the Wolverines a 10-7 advantage. LaMont then made quick work of his opponent Mitch Friedman by converting an early takedown into a 46-second fall to give UVU six team points and extend its lead to 16-7. Eighth-ranked Clay Ream (157) at and 20th-ranked Andrew Fogarty (165) then answered for the Bison with respective wins by major decision and technical fall to tie the team score at 16-16, but that's when Bastian and Sumner answered for the Wolverines by pulling out the final two wins of the night to give UVU the upset win. The match not only marked Utah Valley's second win of the year over a ranked foe, but also its fifth consecutive dual meet to be decided by the final match of the contest. The Wolverines will conclude the trip at fellow ranked Big 12 foe No. 19 South Dakota State on Saturday. The first match of the dual meet is set for at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT at Frost Arena and will be streamed live on FloWrestling.org. Gross recorded his ninth pin of the season - and fourth in a Big 12 dual - in upping his season record to 22-1. Gross' latest pin canceled out a pin by Oklahoma heavyweight Ross Larson two matches earlier and forced the dual to be decided on criteria based on team points. The Jackrabbits, in large part to seventh-ranked Nate Rotert's 14-5 major decision over 19th-ranked Brad Johnson in the 197-pound match, held a 50-47 edge in the team point category to earn the decisive team point. With the dual starting at 141 pounds, Oklahoma claimed three of the first four matches of the night to take an early 10-3 lead, highlighted by decisions from ranked wrestlers Clark Glass at 157 pounds and 165-pounder Yoanse Mejias. Alex Kocer, ranked 19th at 149 pounds, claimed the first of two matches between ranked opponents, as he knocked off 13th-ranked Davion Jeffries, 11-9. Kocer turned a reversal into a four-point near-fall for the decisive margin in a wild second period. David Kocer, ranked 15th at 174 pounds, continued the Jackrabbits on the comeback trail with a 6-1 decision over Matt Reed, and Martin Mueller followed with a 7-5 decision over Andrew Dixon to pull SDSU to within 10-9. Rotert's major decision at 197 pounds was his eighth consecutive victory and gave the Jackrabbits a short-lived 13-10 lead as Oklahoma responded with Larson's pin and an 8-5 decision by Christian Moody at 125 pounds. SDSU concludes the weekend homestand with a Big 12 dual against Utah Valley, a 22-16 winner at North Dakota State on Friday. EVANSTON, Ill. -- Fighting Illini wrestling 133-pounder Zane Richards won his 100th career match as the Illini defeated Northwestern 28-15 at Welsh Ryan Arena Friday evening. All seven of Illinois' ranked grapplers picked up victories against the Wildcats, including bonus points from Richards, Kyle Langenderfer, Isaiah Martinez and Zac Brunson. The five straight dual victories by the Orange and Blue improve their record to 7-2 overall, 4-2 in the Big Ten. "Although we came away with a win, it was a very frustrating night," explained Head Coach Jim Heffernan. "We got caught on our back and pinned twice in the third period in matches that we were leading. That can't happen at this point in the season. We need to get better, make better decisions and finish matches." Zane Richards (18-2) reached the century mark in career wins with a 16-6 major decision against Jason Ipsarides to get the Illini on the scoreboard in the second match of the dual. With the Illini trailiing 6-0 after a pin by Northwestern's Anthony Rubinetti, Richards went to work on Ipsarides to the tune of three takedowns in each of the first two periods. The Illini senior finished off the victory with an escape and a point for riding time in the third period. Richards becomes the 23rd Illini wrestler in school history to reach 100 wins in his career and currently ranks 10th in Illinois history in win percentage (.820). The Illini seniors' next win will tie him with current volunteer assistant, and two-time NCAA champion, Jesse Delgado for 22nd on the all-time wins list. After the Illini and Wildcats traded decisions in the next two bouts, No. 20 Eric Barone (7-5) winning 7-5 at 149 pounds, the Illini went on an 18-0 run over the next four bouts to surge ahead of the Wildcats. No. 12 Kyle Langenderfer gave the Illini their first lead of the match with his seventh straight victory, a 20-6 major decision against Northwestern's Ben Sullivan. After three takedowns in the first period, Langenderfer scored 12 points in the following two minutes, highlighted by four back points to end the period, to put the match out of reach. Sullivan was able to fight off another takedown from the Illini redshirt junior, keeping Langenderfer from earning the technical fall. Leading 11-9 coming out of the intermission, No. 1 Isaiah Martinez (165) and No. 12 Zac Brunson (174) overwhelmed their counterparts to double the Illinois lead. Martinez notched his 20th win of the season with a pin with 51 seconds remaining in the first period. Prior to getting Northwestern's Anthony Perone on his back, Martinez unloaded six takedowns on the Wildcat in the first two minutes of action. Following the sixth takedown, the Illini redshirt junior turned Perone for his fifth fall of the season. Martinez (20-0) has now scored bonus points in 17 of his 20 matches this season, tops on the team. The five pins rank second on the team. Nearly as fast as Martinez, Zac Brunson (23-5) needed just two minutes, 27 seconds to dispatch of Braxton Cody by technical fall, 16-0, at 174 pounds. After an early takedown, Brunson turned him four times, earning two back points the first time and four points on each of the three subsequent times. The 14 near fall points for Brunson is the most by an Illini in a match this season, surpassing Richards' 12 against Ted Rico last Sunday at Arizona State. Emery Parker finished off the 18-0 run by the Illini, and clinched the dual victory, with a 5-3 comeback victory over Mitch Sliga at 184 pounds. Sliga jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a first-period takedown, followed by an escape to start period two. Parker cut the lead to 3-2 after a penalty point for stalling in the second period and an escape to start the third period. Back in neutral, Parker and Sliga got into a scramble with less than a minute to go, but Parker was able to earn the go-ahead takedown with just 37 seconds left on the clock. With Sliga fighting to get a match-tying escape, Parker rode out the Wildcat to earn the riding time point and seal the victory. After Jacob Berkowitz gave Northwestern their second pin of the night at 197 pounds, No. 15 Brooks Black gave the Illini their seventh and final victory of the night with a 4-2 decision against Conan Jennings at heavyweight. Riding their five-match win streak, the Illini return home to host Purdue on Sunday, February 5 at 1 p.m. Sunday's dual will be 'Takedown Cancer' day, as the Illini honor those who have battled cancer. Illinois wrestlers will toss out pink Illinois t-shirts prior to the match. Illini Notes: Illinois has won five consecutive matches dating back to their 34-6 victory against No. 13 Michigan on January 20. Zane Richards' 16-6 victory marks the 100th of his career, becoming the 23rd wrestler in Illinois history to reach the century mark. Richards is one win away from tying current Illini assistant, and two-time NCAA champion, Jesse Delgado (101) for 22nd on Illinois' all-time list. Isaiah Martinez improves to a perfect 20-0 on the season, notching his fifth fall of the season and 17th bonus-point victory Zac Brunson's 16-0 technical fall moves him into a tie for 24th place on Illinois' all-time wins list, tying Carl Perry with 98 career victories. Brunson's 14 back points is the most by an Illini in a match this season Kyle Langenderfer notched his seventh straight victory to improve to 19-4 on the season. During his seven-match winning streak, Langenderfer has scored 26 team points for the Illini Brunson and Parker both notched their team-leading 23rd win of the season tonight Results: 125: Anthony Rubinetti (NU) fall Travis Piotrowski (ILL), 6:56 NU 6, ILL 0 133: #6 Zane Richards (ILL) major dec. IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The third-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team got four bonus-point wins from four seniors and saw another Hawkeye win for the first time in front of the home crowd in Friday night's 33-8 win over No. 16 Wisconsin at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Sammy Brooks won by fall in 4:54 and fellow classmates Thomas Gilman, Topher Carton, and Alex Meyer won by major decision. Junior Phillip Laux, an Iowa City West High School graduate who found himself in the lineup for the fourth time this season at 133 pounds, won 6-2 to win for the first time in his career at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and his first dual win of the season. "A win is a win, it's good, but it's not the way I wanted to win," Laux said. "I have got to score takedowns. I have to score leg attacks. There is a lot to improve upon, but it is a step moving forward." Laux's win gave Iowa a 16-5 lead at intermission. The Hawkeyes won four matches before the break, including Brooks' pin to lead off a dual that started at 184 pounds. Brooks scored three takedowns in the first period and opened the second on top, locking up a cradle and nearly getting a fall in the opening minute. He went back to the cradle seconds later, this time finishing for his fifth pin of the season. "You're not there until the ref slaps the mat," Brooks said, "and that's what I was looking for." Brooks' fall was followed by a 3-1 decision from Cash Wilcke at 197 and a 21-8 major decision from Thomas Gilman at 125. "Brooks started off good," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "That's what we wanted. Give our guys some credit. They wrestled. There were some bonus points and we needed bonus points." Carton extended Iowa's lead to 20-5 with a 9-1 major decision against 16th-ranked Cole Martin at 141. He scored a takedown in the opening minute, added a second takedown in the closing seconds of the second period, and tacked on two nearfall and 3:10 of riding time to earn his third win over a ranked opponent and his career high sixth major decision of the season "It's always nice to get that bonus points, that is the style that we wrestle," Carton said. "Always trying to push the pace. Terry (Brands) was yelling 'push your body, push your body.' When I am wrestling like that I feed off of myself a little bit." Iowa closed the dual with three wins in the final six matches. Brandon Sorensen won by decision, 9-5, at 149. Michael Kemerer recorded a fall in 55 seconds at 157, his third and fastest fall of the season, and Alex Meyer used four takedowns and 3:03 of riding time to win by major decision, 11-3, a 174. Wisconsin won by technical fall at 285, and the Badgers third-ranked Isaac Jordan defeated Joey Gunther, 3-1, in sudden victory at 165. Iowa returns to the mat Sunday at Minnesota. COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Indiana wrestling team began their weekend on the east coast with a Friday night dual meet against the Maryland Terrapins at the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The Hoosiers (9-6, 2-4) won 6-of-10 bouts to earn a 22-19 victory over the Terrapins (2-12, 0-7). Three Hoosiers picked up bonus points in their matches. Jake Danishek (157) and Devin Skatzka (174) each won by major decision amidst Indiana's decisive 19-point swing. Nate Jackson (184) notched career win No. 97 with a five-minute technical fall to remain unbeaten in dual meets this season. The meet began with a rematch from last year's dual at 125 lbs., Elijah Oliver against Michael Beck. Oliver's first period takedown proved decisive in a 3-2 decision victory. Maryland stretched out a 9-3 dual lead in the next two matches, forcing a pivotal matchup between Chris Perez (149) and Adam Whitesell. Perez held a 2-1 margin entering the final period, and a quick escape pushed him to a two-point cushion. Whitesell closed the gap with a takedown and held on to force sudden victory. Perez scored the takedown for a 5-3 sudden victory. It lifted Perez's Big Ten dual record to 5-1, and sparked a five-bout stretch of Indiana wins. Danishek followed in the next bout with his fifth major decision of the season, a 10-1 win over Danny Boychuck. The scoreboard was blank after five minutes of wrestling, but Danishek poured on two takedowns, four back points, an escape, and a riding time point in the final two minutes. Bryce Martin (165) kept the run going with his second consecutive dual win, 5-3, against Josh Ugalde. Martin utilized three stall points and a third period takedown to ward off Ugalde's riding time advantage. Skatzka followed that act with a thorough 16-4 major decision win, picking up nine points in the final period. Jackson added win No. 97 to his career record in dominating fashion with a 23-8 technical fall in just over five minutes. His first period went according to plan, scoring three takedowns with a ride-out to the buzzer. Jackson picked up in the second with four more takedowns and two back points, and closed the bout with four nearfall points and a takedown early in the third period. EDINBORO, Pa. -- The top-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team moved to 11-0 on the season Friday night, as it dropped 24th-ranked Edinboro, 24-12, at McComb Fieldhouse. With three starters sitting out of the lineup Friday, OSU registered seven wins on the evening, bolstering its margin of victory with bonus-point wins from Dean Heil and Kaid Brock. Senior Anthony Collica also tallied his 100th career win, becoming the 41st Cowboy to reach the century mark. "It wasn't our best, but you always like winning matches on the road," head coach John Smith said. "Wrestling with three guys out of the lineup, it's nice to see two of those three (reserves) win matches. In the end, you just want to see a little bit more. I didn't get what I wanted tonight, but it's get that we got the win and are able to move down the road." The Cowboys started out in hole, as 12th-ranked Nick Piccininni dropped a tough, 3-2 bout to No. 9 Sean Russell of Edinboro at 125 pounds. Brock and Heil, however, would answer with commanding bonus-point wins to put the Cowboys back on top where they would stay the remainder of the night. Facing No. 19 Korbin Myers, Brock came out hot at 133, tallying four takedowns and two nearfalls in the opening two periods to lead, 15-3, heading to the third. The Cowboy redshirt freshman would finish off with a 16-4 major decision to move to 19-1 on the season and push his record against ranked foes to 9-1. Heil scored in bunches as well in his technical fall over Ozzy Lugo that would push his win streak to 29, and move his record on the season to 20-0. Leading, 13-2, after one period, thanks to two takedowns and a couple of nearfalls to match, the junior finished off the match quickly in the second with a reversal and two-point nearfall to take the 17-2 tech that marked his fourth on the year. Collica picked up his 100th win in a 4-1 decision over 11th-ranked Patricio Lugo at 149. After scoring the first and only takedown of the match with a minute to go in the first period, the Cowboy senior held on, adding a couple of points on an escape to open the second and a point for riding time to seal the win. Davey Dolan picked up his second consecutive dual victory in an exciting 6-5 decision over Edinboro's Chase Delande. Dolan jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first with a takedown and nearfall to open, but Delande wouldn't go away quietly as he turned Dolan for a four-point nearfall in the second to tie the match at four apiece. Dolan had the last word in the match, however, getting a reversal with under a minute to go in the final period and riding out the clock for the win. The Fighting Scots struck back at 165 pounds, as 17th-ranked Austin Matthews pinned Chandler Rogers in the second period to cut the Cowboys' lead to 15-9; however, OSU would respond with three-straight victories from Kyle Crutchmer, Nolan Boyd and Derek White to lock up the team's 11th win. Tied at four at the end of regulation, Crutchmer and Edinboro's Ty Schoffstall were forced to battle it out in an overtime that the OSU senior would take rather quickly for the 6-4 decision. The win pushed Crutchmer to 12-4 this season and 2-0 over Schoffstall. Senior Nolan Boyd faced a tough test at 184 pounds in Edinboro youngster Dakota Greer, ranked 18th in the nation. Tied at eight in a thrilling, back-and-forth match, Boyd showed his experience, notching a takedown with nine seconds on the clock to earn his fifth-straight victory. Redshirt sophomore Derek White bounced back from a tough loss last Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Dylan Reynolds that sealed the dual for the Cowboys, despite 12th-ranked Billy Miller of Edinboro taking the heavyweight match, 6-2, over Cowboy reserve Tanner Allen. The Cowboys will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, as they head to Kent, Ohio, to face Kent State at 2 p.m. ET. Fans can watch live for free here. Results: 125: No. 9 Sean Russell (EDIN) dec.
