CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois wrestling sent off its seniors with a 28-9 victory on senior day against Indiana. Illini seniors Zane Richards and Zac Brunson both picked up victories in their final matches at Huff Hall. For Brunson, the victory marked the 100th of his career, joining Richards who reached the century mark on February 3 at Northwestern. "It was pretty cool," said Coach Heffernan on Brunson's 100th victory. "Just the timing of it; it's always hard on senior day. They're good people. Zac's in graduate school, Zane's really grown up and become a great leader himself. As these guys are progressing they've gotten better at wrestling, they've gotten to be better people. It's been great having them and we still have them for another five weeks so we need to see what we can do." Illinois finishes the 2016-17 home slate with a perfect 5-0 record, the first perfect season at Huff Hall since Mark Johnson's Illini went 6-0 in the 2008-09 season. Illinois concludes the season 9-3 overall in duals, 6-3 in the Big Ten. "The fans that come are truly Illini fans and they really appreciate the athletes, and let them know that they love all 10 starters after we go out there and compete," said Brunson. "It's truly something special here in Champaign that they have when it comes to supporting the wrestling team." Brunson capped off his senior day with a 7-4 decision against Devin Skatzka to earn his 100th career victory, becoming the 24th Illini wrestler to reach the century mark. Brunson used two early takedowns to gain control of the match, and then added a third in the second period. "Looking back now, this has been one of my dreams since I was a little kid," said Brunson following the victory. Back home, I watched college wrestling and always dreamed of getting to wrestle on this stage. Having done it, I'm extremely honored to get to have my last match at Huff Hall, and also be my 100th win, is truly special for me. I think it's still settling in. There's still one more goal and that's to win the NCAA tournament and I'm still looking forward to that" Like Brunson, Richards finished off his career at Huff Hall with a victory, overwhelming Garrett Pepple with a 21-6 technical fall. Richards used five takedowns coupled with eight back points to earn his 103rd victory of his career. The 103 wins tie him with former Illini Griff Powell for 21st on the Illinois all-time list. The Illini also earned bonus points at 165 pounds, as No. 1 Isaiah Martinez wrapped up a perfect regular season (23-0) with his 10th technical fall. Martinez needed just 4:03 to tally eight takedowns and a four-point near fall to dispatch of Bryce Martin. Illinois also received victories from Travis Piotrowski (14-11), No. 19 Eric Barone (9-6), No. 12 Kyle Langenderfer (21-5), Andre Lee (10-13) and No. 15 Brooks Black (11-5). A back-and-forth battle between Travis Piotrowski and Indiana's Elijah Oliver opened today's dual, as Oliver grabbed an early 2-0 lead before Piotrowski recovered to takedown Oliver for a 3-2 lead at the end of the first. Oliver leveled the match, 4-4, in the third period with a takedown, but chose to cut Piotrowski loose. However, the Hoosier's final attempts at a third takedown proved unsuccessful, as the Illini freshman prevailed, 5-4. At 149 pounds, a takedown by Barone 12 seconds into the match proved to be the difference as the Illini redshirt freshman defeated Chris Perez, 4-1. Barone racked up over two minutes of riding time, including the full two minutes of their third period. After having his eight-match winning streak snapped on Friday night, Langenderfer bounced back with a 9-2 decision against Jake Danishek at 157 pounds. Langenderfer used a takedown and four-point near fall at the end of the first period to take a commanding 6-0 lead, and then added a second takedown in the third period to put the match away. Andre Lee added a 5-2 victory at 197 pounds, defeating Indiana's Jacob Hinz. Trailing 1-0 in the third period, Lee earned an escape to tie the match and then got the go-ahead takedown with 1:08 left on the clock. Hinz closed the gap to 3-2 with an escape, but Lee kept the Hoosier at bay before adding a second takedown as time expired. Brooks Black closed out the Illinois victory by picking up his fifth in Big Ten duals. The Illini heavyweight used an escape in the second period along with 1:50 of riding time to shutout Fletcher Miller, 2-0. Indiana lone victories in the match came at 141 pounds and 184 pounds, as Cole Weaver pinned Mousa Jodeh (4:33) and No. 7 Nate Jackson defeated No. 12 Emery Parker by way of a 9-6 decision. With the regular season complete, the Orange and Blue will have two weeks off before traveling to Bloomington, Indiana for Big Ten Championships, March 4-5. Illini Notes: The 28-9 victory gives Illinois a perfect 5-0 record at Huff Hall this season. Illinois last went undefeated in 2008-09 when the Illini finished 6-0 at home. With a 7-4 victory today, Zac Brunson becomes the 24th Illini to reach 100 wins in his career. The Illini senior has compiled an overall record of 100-35 over his four seasons, including 25-6 this year. Zane Richards' 21-6 tech fall of Garrett Pepple moves him into a tie with Griff Powell for 21st on Illinois' all-time win list with 103 career victories. Richards also ranks ninth in Illinois history with a .824 career win percentage. Isaiah Martinez concludes the regular season 23-0, the second undefeated regular season of his career. Martinez started 2014-15 with a 25-0 record on his way to a 35-0 undefeated freshman season. Martinez's technical fall of Bryce Martin is his 10th of the season and 35th of his career. Oklahoma State dominates Oklahoma to finish historic regular season

STILLWATER -- The top-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team dominated No. 17 Oklahoma, 37-3, Sunday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena to finish the regular season undefeated for the first time since 2005 and the 46th time in school history. The win also moved the Cowboys' record in the all-time Bedlam series to 139-27-10. Turning in their eighth 30-point dual win this season, the Cowboys (14-0, 6-0 Big 12) also extended their home dual winning streak against Oklahoma to 21. "I thought we had a good match," head coach John Smith said. "They were going deep into their reserves in some of the weights, but I liked what I saw from the standpoint of points scored and critical times to separate the match." A third-period fall from Chandler Rogers was perhaps the highlight of the day for Oklahoma State, to go along with a major decision from Anthony Collica and technical falls from Kaid Brock, Joe Smith and Nolan Boyd. Redshirt freshman Nick Piccininni started things off for the Cowboys with a 10-5 decision over Christian Moody at 125 pounds. Tied at two going into the third period, Piccininni made the most out of the final frame, scoring seven quick points with an escape followed by a takedown and nearfall to push his lead to 9-2. Moody, however, would score a takedown before the end of the period to avoid the major decision. Kaid Brock registered his first technical fall of his season at 133 pounds with a dominant, 18-3 victory over Jacob Rubio. Brock came out hot to lead 8-1 after one period with a couple of takedowns and a nearfall in the opening frame. From that point, the redshirt freshman scored four more takedowns to clinch the tech with riding time added and move to 22-1 for the season. Junior Dean Heil won his 32nd-straight match, and he handled Oklahoma's Mike Longo, 5-3. Heil and Longo were tied at two after the first two periods, but the Cowboy would escape and drop Longo for a takedown in the final frame to lock up the win. Collica led throughout his match, dropping No. 13 Davion Jeffries for his first takedown of the match with about a minute to go in the first before proceeding to record four more throughout the bout. With his Senior Day victory, Collica moved to 17-1 on the year. In his first match back in the lineup since the Cowboys wrestled Missouri on Jan. 27, sophomore Joe Smith piled on the points for a 17-1 technical fall over Oklahoma's Jared Schieber. Smith led 4-1 after one period and 9-1 after two before finishing off the match in 5:58 with a takedown and nearfall to highlight an eight-point final period. "It was good," John Smith said. "I thought he was a little slow in getting back into it, letting (Schieber) know that he can wrestle hard. When you have the injury he's had, you're a little bit timid because he's healed it up and it gets hurt again, he heals it up and it gets hurt again. It was good to see him break out of it and let it fly. His knee is in pretty good shape and we'll continue to protect it, but I'm pleased with him and it was a good tech fall for him." Rogers awakened the orange-clad Gallagher-Iba Arena crowd at 165 pounds with a fall of 10th-ranked Yoanse Mejias. Rogers controlled the match even before the pin, notching a pair of takedowns in the first two periods to lead 5-2 heading to the third. Rogers made his move in the third frame, attacking and converting on a third takedown before decking Mejias just seconds later. Senior Kyle Crutchmer grinded out a 4-2 decision over Matt Reed at 174 pounds to move to 15-4 on the season. Crutchmer used a third-period escape and the riding time point to separate himself from Reed and earn the win. Nolan Boyd continued his winning ways with a 16-0 tech over DaWaylon Barnes. Boyd scored four takedowns and a nearfall in the win. The senior has racked up eight-straight wins over the last month, with five of those victories coming by way of technical fall. Redshirt sophomore Preston Weigel used a third-period escape to clinch a 4-3 victory over Brad Johnson at 197 pounds. The win was Weigel's second of the weekend, and moved him to 15-4 this season. Cowboy Derek White got the start at heavyweight, moving up from 197 pounds. The Cowboy came up short, however, dropping an 8-0 major decision to No. 19 Ross Larson. Oklahoma State will play host to the NWCA National Duals final on Sunday, Feb. 19. The event serves as the dual national championship, and while the NWCA selection committee will make its official selection later Sunday night, Oklahoma State and Penn State are the top two teams ranked in the NWCA poll. YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Michigan State wrestling clinched its fifth victory of the season, knocking off in-state foe Eastern Michigan on Senior Day at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti on Sunday, Feb. 12. In a thrilling, back-and-forth tilt, freshman Drew Hughes earned the Spartans' victory, 17-16, with a 5-0 decision. "We preach all year about competing, and we did today at all of the weight classes," said head coach Roger Chandler. "I have been saying all week that this match would come down to bonus points, and give it to our guys, they wrestled for all seven minutes." MSU has defeated the Eagles in four of the previous five meetings, and is 18-3 all-time against EMU. Four of the past seven contests have been decided by less than four points. The 165-lb. bout concluded the match after the day started at 174 pounds. Entering the final matchup of the day, the Eagles (6-7, 2-5 MAC) had won the previous two bouts to take a 16-14 edge over Michigan State (5-10, 1-7 B1G). No. 25 Hughes, coming in winner of three of the past four, faced off against EMU's Devan Marry. After two scoreless periods, Hughes turned Marry to the mat for a four-point nearfall. With riding time in his favor, Hughes clinched the decision, 5-0. "We told all of the guys in the locker room that we needed everyone to wrestle hard, but for Drew as a true freshman to have that kind of pressure on him, we rely a lot on him. He didn't freak out, kept competing and got the turn late," said Chandler. No. 20 Javier Gasca gave the Spartans' their largest lead of the day at 14-10 with a 20-2 technical fall victory over No. 31 Kyle Springer at 141 pounds. Springer jumped ahead early with a takedown before Gasca wheeled off 20 unanswered points. Leading just 3-2 at the end of the first, the redshirt junior from Kingsburg, California, had three takedowns in the second that he converted into back point on each shot. "Javier always just keeps wrestling," Chandler said. "He got down early but then just took over and kept competing. He stepped up and really won the dual for us." At 133-pounds, redshirt junior Austin Eicher pulled Michigan State to within one after trailing 10-6, claiming a 6-3 decision over Armando Torres. In the first, Torres connected on a shot to take Eicher to the mat and jump out to a 2-0 lead. Eicher regained his composure though, tallying an escape and takedown in the second. The final period was all Eicher, recording a second takedown and earning the riding time bonus. Sophomore Jacob Cooper pulled off the biggest upset of the day for the Spartans, defeating No. 19 Gage Hutchison in sudden victory, 5-3. Cooper wasted no time taking a lead, connecting on a takedown for two points. Hutchison knotted the bout after a stalling call and an escape in the first. A second stalling call gave Hutchison a slight lead at the end of the second period. Cooper tied the bout to force overtime, then notched a takedown late in the first sudden victory. After an EMU challenge, the call was confirmed. "I am proud of Jacob. We knew and have been telling him that he can compete with the best in the country," said Chandler. "For Jacob, it has been a mental hold back, but today he believed and got the win. I really hope that this will catapult him moving forward for the rest of the season and into the Big Ten Tournament." Redshirt sophomore Shwan Shadaia notched Michigan State's first victory of the day, claiming a 3-1 decision at 184 pounds against Kayne MacCallum. Following a scoreless opening period, MacCallum scored first with an escape after starting on bottom. In the final frame, Shadaia started on bottom and escaped to tie the tilt before connecting on a late shot for a 3-1 victory. "These guys have competed all year and to come out on the positive side of one of these big duals is huge," Chandler said. "It will be the same message next week - keep wrestling for seven minutes and the results will take care of themselves." Michigan State concludes regular-season action with the Big Ten and regular-season finale at Wisconsin on Friday, Feb. 17, at 8 p.m. ET. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The 24th-ranked Pitt wrestling team picked up its second win of the weekend after outlasting conference opponent Virginia, 19-14, Sunday afternoon in Memorial Gym. Six Panthers earned wins including one with bonus points and two in overtime. The win marks the first over an ACC opponent this season, improving Pitt's overall record to 10-5. “Today was a total team effort,†co-head coach Drew Headlee said. “When everyone pulls together, this team can do some great things. A couple guys had to really dig deep to pull out a win and that is the grit and toughness that we need to finish the season strong.†“Overall it was a good weekend,†co-head coach Matt Kocher added. “The team came together for a good effort and we had fun doing it. We came out on top of some tough close matches today. [Mikey] Racciato, [Taleb] Rahmani and [Zach] Bruce all had moments where they could have given in but showed some guts to pull out the win. Our energy on the bench has been good and I think those guys were fighting for more than just themselves - it helped them to push through.†Redshirt junior Ryan Solomon got the dual started at 285 pounds by picking up an 11-1 major decision over Tyler Love. Solomon built up a 6-1 lead in the first period off two takedowns and a two point nearfall. Love escaped in the opening frame but wouldn't be able to score any other points. Solomon continued to dominate, picking up four more points and adding one with riding time en route to the Panthers' first win of the day. The Cavaliers took a 5-4 lead in the dual after Jack Mueller won by technical fall at 125 pounds over sophomore LJ Bentley. Junior Dom Forys brought the lead back in favor of Pitt at 133 pounds after he won in a 10-8 decision over Will Mason. Forys and Mason were tied 3-3 entering the second period but a reversal, escape and two takedowns would give him a 10-7 lead entering the final frame. Mason escaped off bottom in the third as Forys held him off the rest of the way. Virginia regained the lead, 8-7, after a victory at 141 pounds. Redshirt junior Nick Zanetta dropped a 9-3 decision to reigning 133-pound ACC Champion George DiCamillo. The Panthers claimed the next three matches, extending their lead to 16-11. Senior Mikey Racciato earned an overtime win against Sam Krivus, 6-4, in the first sudden victory. Racciato and Krivus were scoreless after the opening period before Racciato reversed him for a 2-0 lead entering the third. Krivus escaped to start the third, but Racciato quickly took him down. Krivus then escaped and took down Racciato to tie the bout 4-4 at the end of regulation. In sudden victory, Racciato took down Krivus to secure the win. Redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani followed that with another exciting overtime victory versus Andrew Atkinson. Rahamni led 6-4 at the end of the first period off a reversal, takedown and nearfall, but wouldn't be able to score in the second as Atkinson escaped to open the period. Starting the third on bottom, Rahmani reversed Atkinson but his Cavalier opponent escaped and took him down to tie it 8-8 at the end of regulation. Rahmani took down Atkinson in sudden victory to lock up the win. Sophomore TeShan Campbell fed off the previous two overtime wins as he picked up a 9-2 decision over Ray Bethea. Campbell struck first in the opening frame, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. The Pittsburgh native held Bethea scoreless in the second, adding three more points off an escape and takedown. In the final period, Bethea gave up a point after being hit with his second stall warning and Campbell added one more point with riding time. Virginia claimed the following weight class at 174 pounds as sophomore Donovan McAfee dropped a 6-3 decision to Garrett Peppelman. Redshirt sophomore Zach Bruce turned in the final win for the Panthers at 184 pounds as he outlasted Will Schany, 2-1, earning the winning point with riding time. With the dual locked up in favor of the Panthers, Virginia's Chance McClure posted a 3-2 decision over senior John Rizzo. IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The third-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won seven-of-10 matches to defeat No. 6 Nebraska, 27-9, on Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. After splitting the first two matches, Iowa won six in a row to clinch the dual and top the Huskers for the ninth straight time. "That was a good Nebraska team that came into Carver today," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "They came for blood. They didn't put their best team out there on the mat (today) but they came for blood and you saw it. It thought we responded well." The dual featured three bouts pitting top five opponents, and the Hawkeyes came out on top of two of the three. Top-ranked Thomas Gilman recorded the only three takedowns of the 125-pound match and defeated No. 5 Tim Lambert, 6-3; and second-ranked Michael Kemerer made a first-period takedown standup in his 3-2 win over third-ranked Tyler Berger at 157. Gilman's win was his 23rd straight, a new career-high, and Kemerer's win was his fifth over a top 10 opponent this season, and his second win over Berger. "We had a lot of fun scrambles and you want to avoid those," Kemerer said. "When you have a shot you want to finish it and start working on your top stuff. I got him on that first shot and finished clean right away, but I want to score more than one takedown so I still have to focus on finishing those shots clean. Overall I thought it was a good win. Now it's time to move on." The Huskers' top-five win came at 133, where No. 5 Eric Montoya defeated fourth-ranked Cory Clark, 9-6, at 133. Montoya reversed Clark in the final minute to take a 5-4 lead and added four nearfall to win for the first time in three meetings between the two. The Nebraska decision temporarily tied the dual, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Montoya gave Iowa a 3-2 advantage and the Hawkeyes extended the gap from there. Joey Gunther won 4-1 at 165; Brandon Sorensen (149), Alex Meyer (174), and Sammy Brooks (184) won by major decision, technical fall, and pin -- in that order -- and Topher Carton won for the first time over a top 10 opponent at 141. Carton, ranked 18th, used a third-period escape and takedown to defeat No. 10 Colton McCrystal, 6-4. "It's always good to win, especially in front of the Carver crowd, but I I need to do more," said Carton, who was one of four Hawkeyes to win on Senior Day. "I need to widen the gap. You know, one more takedown and you never know what it can do to somebody's psychological edge. It was good to get out there and compete and win, but I need to do it more." Brooks' pin at 184 gave Iowa a 27-2 lead, and a major decision by Nebraska at 197 and a decision at 285 made the final score 27-9. The Hawkeyes close the regular season with a 12-2 record overall, 8-1 in the Big Ten. The postseason begins next weekend against an opponent yet to be determined. The NWCA will announce the National Duals Championships Series schedule Sunday at 9:30 p.m. (CT). The Big Ten Championships follow March 4-5 in Bloomington, Indiana, and the NCAA Championships are March 16-18 in St. Louis. NOTES: Attendance was 9,830… Iowa recognized seniors Thomas Gilman, Cory Clark, Topher Carton, Alex Meyer, and Sammy Brooks following the dual… Gilman has won a career-high 23 straight matches… Clark lost for just the second time in 34 matches at Carver-Hawkeye Arena… Carton earned his first win over a top 10 opponent… Sorensen has a team-high 10 major decisions… Kemerer has a team-high 24 wins... MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Freshman heavyweight Brandon Ngati pinned Joe Scanlan in the final bout of the day as the West Virginia University wrestling team claimed a thrilling comeback win over Iowa State, 22-20, for the first Big 12 win in program history on Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum. Trailing 20-9 after seven bouts, the Mountaineers won three straight, including a pair of bonus-point victories, to secure the win. West Virginia (3-11, 1-3) won five of 10 bouts overall with a pair of pins and a major decision in taking the victory over the Cyclones (1-10, 1-6). “I just want to see them win,†WVU coach Sammie Henson said. “I just want to see them be successful. I want to see them do the things I know they're capable of doing. With Big Jake (Smith) and Dylan Cottrell – his leadership today … to come out here and wrestle the way that he did and step up for our team. (Christian) Monserrat finally got a quality win. He's been on the opposite sides of those matches where it was close and we've lost several really close matches. To see that change, I just think it was a team effort. A total team effort today. I'm elated. It's been a long year. We were just trying to get a win for (Brandon) Ngati. My man got it down for us.†The Cyclones won the first three matches of the day for a 9-0 lead heading into the 149-pound bout, where Christian Monserrat squared off with Gabe Moreno. Moreno scored first with a first-period takedown, but Monserrat added a pair of takedowns and an escape in the second for a 5-3 lead heading into the third. Called twice for stalling in the final stanza to give Moreno a point, Monserrat added a pair of takedowns in securing the 9-6 decision to put WVU on the board, down 9-3. Iowa State won by fall at 157 for a 15-3 lead, but No. 13/20 Dylan Cottrell countered with a win by fall at 165 pounds. Cottrell used an early takedown and a pair of nearfall points for a 4-0 lead over Logan Breitenbach in the first period. Starting in the defensive position in the second, Cottrell escaped to pad his lead at 5-0. He then used a takedown and got the turn for the pin with 17 seconds remaining in the second period as WVU cut the ISU lead to six at 15-9. ISU won by tech. fall at 174 for a 20-9 advantage with three matches to go. At 184, Parker VonEgidy used a reversal of Carson Powell late in the third period to tie the score, 3-3, at the end of regulation. He then struck with the takedown in sudden victory to win the 5-3 decision and bring the Mountaineers within eight, down 20-12. No. 5-ranked Jacob A. Smith added four more to the board with a major decision over Marcus Harrington at 197 pounds. Smith used three takedowns and four nearfall points on his way to the 12-0 win, his tenth straight of the season. With the Mountaineers trailing 20-16, Ngati entered the heavyweight bout needed a tech. fall or pin of Scanlan to win. After a scoreless first period, Scanlan started on bottom and escape for a 1-0 lead. With 35 seconds remaining in the second period, Ngati threw Scanlan to the mat and go the pin soon after to complete the comeback and give West Virginia the 22-20 victory. The Bison upped their winning streak to nine matches while improving to 11-4 overall and 8-1 in the league. Smith, who is currently ranked as high as 12th in the national rankings, came through with a 14-10 win in sudden victory over Army's Logan Everett, who is currently ranked as high as 15th. Smith improved to 24-6 with his ninth straight win. He has earned bonus points in six matches during that stretch. He has lost just once in 16 matches dating back to Dec. 17. Smith's win cut Army's lead to 6-3 after three matches, and started a Bucknell run of three straight victories to give it a 12-6 lead. Freshman Seth Hogue was a 15-11 winner at 149, while No. 14/15/18 Victor Lopez followed with a second-period fall at 157. Lopez improved to 22-5 with his fourth pin of the season. Army earned bonus points in the next two bouts, winning by fall at 165 and by major decision at 174 to take a 16-12 lead, but Bucknell closed strong to get the victory. Freshman Garrett Hoffman started the run with a huge 5-4 decision over Jack Wedholm at 184, improving to 16-12 with his second win over the Black Knights wrestler this season. No. 15/10/12 Tom Sleigh helped take some of the pressure off of the heavyweight bout, picking up an extra point with a 14-4 major decision at 197 to put the Bison up 19-16. Senior Tyler Greene prevented the Bison from having to worry about any tiebreaking procedures with a 5-2 decision over Trevor Smith in the final bout to clinch the match for the Bison, dropping the Black Knights to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the EIWA. MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan wrestling team recorded two pins, a technical fall, and two major decisions Sunday in dominating Kent State, 40-3, in a Mid-American Conference dual at McGuirk Arena. It was the home finale for the Chippewas and their Senior Day as they won their sixth consecutive dual, improving to 9-2. They finished 6-2 in MAC duals. "Pretty good way to end the MAC regular season," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "Pretty happy with the way our guys wrestled today. "Normally at this time of the year we're training really hard. I knew we were going to have a real tough month of January and early February. We had four weekends in a row of Friday-Sunday dual meets. So I've kind of given the guys a break a little bit. I think it's paid off for them. I think they're pretty fresh and pretty confident. " It was the third consecutive dual in which the Chippewas dropped just one match. They have won 27 in that stretch. A 19-18 victory over Michigan, which was ranked 10th at the time, came during the six-meet win streak, which began after a 24-8 dual loss at Missouri. "Ever since that Michigan match," CMU's Austin Severn said. "If there was any doubt, they would have been removed. They were 10th in the country and they'd beaten people that were (ranked) ahead of them. There's no reason why our team can't wrestle with any team in the country right now." That loss to Missouri, and a 17-16 MAC loss to Northern Iowa, proved to be a turning point in the season. "Both the matches against Missouri and Northern Iowa our guys were pretty disappointed in themselves," Borrelli said. "I just think they felt like they were better than that, better than the outcome in both of those matches. There's been a little bit of a change in focus." The Chippewas got pins from Justin Oliver (149 pounds) and Severn (197) on Sunday. It was Oliver's team-leading 10th fall of the season. Severn has won five of his last six matches, two by fall. "That was really important to me, really special to me," said Severn, one of four CMU seniors who was honored prior to the meet. "Just happy a lot of friends and family, my parents, were out here tonight for that." The Chippewas got a technical fall from Brent Fleetwood (125) and major decision victories from Mason Smith (141) and CJ Brucki (174). CMU's Colin Heffernan (157), Logan Parks (165) and Jordan Ellingwood (184) each won by decision, and senior Corey Keener (133) won by void. The lone Kent State victory came in the meet's final match, heavyweight, where Devin Nye topped Tyrus Kemp, 5-2. The Chippewas collected 17 takedowns in the meet to Kent State's three. Two of the Golden Flashes' takedowns came in the heavyweight match. The Chippewas turn their attention to a dual next Sunday at Wisconsin, and then the MAC Championships March 4-5 at Northern Iowa. "We'll have to get back to some hard training now," Borrelli said. "Wisconsin will help us a lot. They'll be a pretty good opponent and we'll have an opportunity to see exactly what we need to sharpen up on before the MAC Tournament." CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Clarion wrestling team closed out its conference duals season with a resounding win on the road, thumping Cleveland State 34-6 in their final Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match of the season. The Golden Eagles (6-9, 3-3 EWL) will close out their dual match season on Sunday, February 19 when they host West Virginia on Senior Day at Tippin Gymnasium. The bouts went 8-2 Clarion's way, with the Golden Eagles all but assuring the result against the Vikings fairly early in the afternoon. Perhaps the biggest win of the day came from Jake Keller – now on a three-match win streak – who defeated one of the nation's top wrestlers at 149 pounds. Keller beat Nick Montgomery, who entered the match ranked 15th in RPI by the NCAA, by a 10-7 score to put the Golden Eagles ahead 12-3 in the team bout. Scott Marmoll nearly knocked off an RPI-ranked wrestler of his own, but just narrowly fell 2-1 to Nick Corba at 184 pounds. The match clincher came courtesy of Dom Rigous, who notched his sixth pinfall victory of the year – and third in the first period – in a win over Devon Pingel at 174 pounds. In fact, the final three Clarion wins of the day all came via pinfall. Terrell Fields pinned Collin Kelly to the mat with just 12 seconds remaining in the first period of the 197-pound bout, and Evan Daley flattened Michael Furbee just 33 seconds into the second period of the heavyweight bout to put a heavy exclamation point on the day. Jake Gromacki opened the day with an 8-1 victory by decision over John Martin at 125 pounds, and Roshaun Cooley notched a dominant win of his own, beating Andrew Coghill 7-1 at 133 pounds. Freshman Mac Tanner posted the first dual match win of his Golden Eagle career in the 157-pound bout, beating RJ LaBeef 8-5, and Evan DeLong cruised past John Vaughn for a 10-0 major decision. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- No. 13 Rutgers wrestling ended the regular season with a convincing 28-6 win over visiting Northwestern Sunday afternoon at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The Scarlet Knights won at eight weight classes in the match, finishing the year with a 12-4 overall record and a program best 6-3 mark in Big Ten Conference competition. The dual ended with a 3-2 tiebreaker win at heavyweight from Razohnn Gross, his fifth win in the last six matches. With the RU win and Nebraska loss, the Scarlet Knights will end the regular season tied for fourth in the conference, the best position in program history. "It's been great. They were really into it today too," said head coach Scott Goodale of the fan support at home, where the Scarlet Knights went undefeated this season (6-0). "We were scoring a lot of points early. When you wrestle with an exciting style, they get into it. That last match they got into it and I think that's what puts Razohnn [Gross] over the top. It's become a real home mat advantage." RU (12-4, 6-3) is expected to learn late Sunday its matchup in the 2017 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Dual Championship Series, scheduled for next weekend. The Scarlet Knights topped No. 7 Lehigh at the RAC last season, 18-15. The Scarlet Knights blanked the Wildcats on the front side of intermission and led the dual by a 17 to -1 margin due to a flagrant misconduct penalty point charged against NU after the 157-pound match. Brandon Paetzell and Anthony Rubinetti scrambled their way through seven minutes at 125 pounds, but Paetzell won the last one at the horn for a takedown and 4-2 win. The win for Paetzell avenges a loss to Rubinetti earlier this season and improves his record 14-7. Scott DelVecchio followed up by coasting to an 11-4 decision at 133 pounds, moving to 17-10 on the season. At 141 pounds, No. 5 Anthony Ashnault captured his 11th straight win with a 21-6 tech fall against Alec McKenna. Seventeen of Ashnault's 23 wins this season have come by bonus points, the most of any Scarlet Knight. No. 14 Kent Theobold bounced back from a loss last time out to win, 10-3, against Shayne Oster. Also winning before the break was No. 18 John Van Brill, who won is 20th match of the season by an 8-3 final against Ben Sullivan. The Wildcats earned two wins in the second half of the dual, beginning with a 14-2 major decision from Johnny Sebastian against Anthony Pafumi at 165 pounds. The other Wildcat win came at 197 pounds, where Jacob Berkowitz took down Matthew Correnti with 20 seconds left for a 5-3 decision. 174-pounder Phillip Bakuckas relished in his senior day moment, making quick work of Braxton Cody in a 16-0 tech fall in the opening period. The win was Bakuckas' 66th as a Scarlet Knight. No. 13 Nicholas Gravina shut out Mitch Sliga, 4-0, to get back in the win column and improve to 17-7. Gravina's previous two matches came against top-10 opponents. Gross ended the dual with his third overtime win at the RAC this season. Gross scored a reversal in the opening tiebreaker period and held Conan Jennings down over the next 30 seconds for a 3-2 win. Overall, Gross is 11-8. Prior to the match, the program honored its senior class of Bakuckas, Sean McCabe, Pafumi, Dylan Painton, Josh Patrick and Theobold. "I'm just proud of those seniors," Goodale said. "They've stuck through it. It's a hard thing to do, five years of this sport, especially if you're not always the guy. To all of them, we have a great appreciation. That's the best way to put it, we have a tremendous appreciation for them and what they've done for this program." Following next weekend's postseason dual, the Scarlet Knights will look ahead to championship season, beginning with the Big Ten Championships from March 4-5 in Bloomington, Indiana. MADISON, Wis. -- In a dual that came down to the wire, the Wisconsin wrestling team gave fans plenty to cheer for as the Badgers came away with the 19-18 win over No. 14 Michigan on an exciting Sunday afternoon in the Field House. Five Badgers recorded wins and the two bonus-point victories proved to be the difference maker in propelling No. 18 Wisconsin (5-5 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) ahead of the Wolverines (8-6, 4-5 Big Ten). "We looked a lot better today than we did on Friday," UW head coach Barry Davis said. "We had a lot more intensity, more urgency which is good to see." 184-pounder Hunter Ritter gave the Badgers their first win of the day. Ritter got things going right away against Ernest Battaglia by recording 10 points in the first period alone. As the eventful bout came to a close, Ritter tallied one last takedown with 21 seconds on the clock to walk away with the 17-8 major decision. In true Connor Medbery fashion, the second-ranked heavyweight made quick work of his opponent by pinning Dan Perry in just 1:45. In a tight 197-pound matchup, 11th-ranked Ricky Roberston and Jackson Striggow were scoreless headed into the third period, but Robertson relied on his endurance to grab a 3-0 lead with 1:25 remaining. A Striggow escape with 35 seconds left cut Robertson's lead to two, but Robertson recorded one final takedown and riding time gave him the 6-1 decision. Living up to his "Comeback Crone" nickname, 149-pounder Andrew Crone was quickly taken down by Malik Amine in the first period but eventually retaliated with a reversal of his own to tie it at 2-2. At the end of a tough second period, Crone received one penalty point to take the lead and was able to maintain control throughout the third to come away with the 3-2 decision. After a scoreless first period, 141-pounder Cole Martin took a 3-1 lead over Sal Profaci entering the third. With just a narrow lead as the match neared the end, Martin came up big with 58 seconds to go by recording four nearfall points. Thanks to riding time, Martin earned the 8-2 decision. In the much-anticipated 165-pound Cliff Keen Invite title rematch between No. 3 Isaac Jordan and No. 2 Logan Massa, Jordan went on the offensive right away to record a takedown just ten seconds in. Massa then retaliated, however, by tallying two takedowns and two escapes to enter the final period up 6-2. An escape and takedown put Jordan within reach of Massa with just 53 seconds left, but Massa managed to escape to make it 7-5. With the crowd on its feet and just seven seconds on the clock, Jordan tied it up with one final takedown but a Massa escape and riding time gave Michigan the 9-7 decision. Up against No. 17 Conor Youtsey, 125-pounder Johnny Jimenez battled through four overtime periods but came up just short as Youtsey recorded a takedown when time expired to claim the 3-1 SV-2 decision. 174-pounder Ryan Christensen dropped a 10-2 major decision to No. 8 Myles Amine to start the dual while 133-pounder Eli Stickley suffered a 20-5 tech fall against No. 7 Stevan Micic. After entering the third period down 8-2 against No. 9 Brian Murphy, 157-pounder TJ Ruschell nearly completed the comeback by recording a takedown along with four nearfall points to even it up with 50 seconds left. Following a Murphy reversal, Ruschell ran out of time as Murphy pulled out the 11-8 decision. Next up, the Badgers return to the Field House for a final Big Ten dual against Michigan State on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. Wisconsin will then wrap up its dual season with a senior day matchup against Central Michigan on Feb. 19 at noon. "We're going to spend some one-on-one with the guys," Davis said. "We'll make a few corrections but stay positive and get ready for Michigan State. We have two more home duals left, some big matches for the rankings. We just have to win and get ready for next week." Results: 174 -- #8 Myles Amine (U-M) major dec. Law could not break free of a strong Rappo ride, picking up a first stall warning as Rappo rode him out. Leading 3-2 w/ 1:27 in time, Rappo chose down to start the second period. Law controlled the action in the top position, working the riding time edge down below 1:00 and then continuing to work for back points. Rappo was able to keep his stomach parallel to the mat and force two resets before escaping to a 4-2 score with :55 on the clock. Rappo worked a high double into a scramble that ended with a pin at the 4:45 mark. 141: Senior Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 11 at 141, took on Ryan Diehl. Gulibon worked in the middle of the mat early, forcing Diehl backwards with a number of slight shots. Diehl countered a low Gulibon shot for the bout's first takedown at the 1:17 mark to open up an early 2-0 lead. Gulibon escaped to a 2-1 score with :50 left and quickly turned into the Terrapin. The Lion senior turned a high inside single into a takedown and a 3-2 lead with :18 left in the period. Leading 3-2, Gulibon chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 4-2 lead. He fought off Diehl head control with 1:30 on the clock and turned a low single into a scramble and a takedown at the 1:02 mark to open up a 6-2 lead. Gulibon rode Diehl out and led 6-2 with :52 in riding time after two periods. Diehl chose down to start the third period and Gulibon maintained control until the 1:31 mark before cutting the Terrapin loose to a 6-3 score. The Lion senior chased Diehl down for third takedown and an 8-4 lead, cutting him loose with :13 left. Gulibon posted the 9-4 decision with 1:30 in riding time. 149: Junior Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 149, met Adam Whitesell. Retherford took Whitesell down just ten seconds in and then turned him for four quick back points to lead 6-0 less than :40 into the bout. Retherford maintained control for over 1:00, trying to tilt the Terrapin before Whitesell escaped to a 6-1 score. Retherford countered a quick Whitesell shot, took him down and cut him, then added another quick takedown to lead 10-2. The Lion junior rode Whitesell out to lead 10-2 with 2:25 in time after one period. Retherford chose down to start the second period, escaped, and then blew through a shot for another takedown just :10 into the period. He quickly locked Whitesell up on his shoulders and got the fall at the 3:17 mark. 157: Sophomore Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 157, battled Justin Alexander. Nolf instigated an early scramble, fought off an Alexander counter attempt, and picked up the bout's first takedown at the 2:20 mark to lead 2-0. Alexander escaped to a 2-1 score and Nolf quickly took him down, turned him to his back and picked up the pin at the 1:27 mark. 165: Red-shirt freshman Vincenzo Joseph (Pittsburgh, Pa.), ranked No. 4 at 165, faced off against Patrick Gerish. Joseph forced an early scramble, nearly taking the Terrapin down. Gerish countered for a near takedown of his own and then Joseph scrambled his way to a stalemate at the 2:10 mark. Joseph roared through a shot at the reset to take a 2-0 lead shortly thereafter. The Lion freshman cut Gerish loose and quickly took him down again to lead 4-1 midway through the opening period. Gerish got hit for a first stall and Joseph cut him loose to a 4-2 score. Joseph picked up a point on a second stall and then turned a high single into a takedown and a 7-2 lead with :20 left. He finished the period on top to lead by five with 1:37 in riding time. Joseph chose down to start the second, quickly escaped and then took Gerish down again. He cut the Terrapin loose, picked up another takedown and then locked up a cradle for a pin at the 3:58 mark. 174: True freshman Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked No. 7 at 174, met Josh Ugalde. The Lion freshman picked up a quick takedown to open up a -20 lead. He then used leg control to turn the Terrapin to his back for four near fall points and a 6-0 lead. After a quick reset, Hall locked up a cradle and grabbed Penn State's fourth straight pin, this one at the 1:14 mark. 184: Sophomore Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 2 at 184, battled Idris White. Nickal turned a high double into a scramble early but White was able to stabilize and keep the action neutral early on. Nickal continued to press, nearly turning an ankle pick into a lead. White stayed neutral but Nickal then countered a low White shot to lead 2-1 after cutting the Terrapin loose midway through the period. Nickal used a high single to open up a 4-2 lead and then tacked on one more takedown. This time, Nickal let up just enough for White to get to his feet and then turned him to his back with a lightning quick move, picking up Penn State's fifth pin in a row at the 2:08 mark. 197: Junior Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 9 at 197, faced off against freshman David-Brian Whisler. McCutcheon forced Whisler to play defense over the first minute-plus, forcing the Terrapin into a stall warning in the process. Whisler took a 2-1 lead with a quick shot and takedown with :20 on the clock and carried that one point lead into the second period. McCutcheon chose down to start the second period quickly escaped to a 2-2 tie. The McCutcheon turned a high single into a scramble in front of the scorer's table. He worked his way into control of Whisler but the duo rolled out of bounds, forcing a reset with 1:00 on the clock. Tied 2-2, Whisler chose down to start the third period. McCutcheon was strong on top, breaking the Terrapin down flat and working for a turn on top. McCutcheon built his riding time up to :48 when a dangerous hold forced a reset. The Loin junior managed to push his time edge to 1:00 before Whisler escaped to a 3-2 lead. McCutcheon rallied on a low single for a takedown to lead 4-3 with :30 left and finished the bout on top for a 5-3 win with 1:31 in time. 285: Sophomore Nick Nevills (Clovis, Calif.), ranked No. 3 at 285, took on sophomore Youssif Hemida. Nickal scored quickly, turning a low single into a scramble and a takedown at the 2:26 mark. The Lion sophomore then dominated action on top, building up over 1:00 in riding time while trying to turn Hemida for back points. The Terrapin fought off Nevills' turn attempts but the Lion sophomore maintained offensive control, forcing Hemida into a first stall warning. Nevills broke Hemida down for the rest of the period and led 2-0 with 2: 26 in time after 3:00 of wrestling. Nevills chose down to start the second period, quickly escaped and then took Hemida down for a 5-0 lead with 1:40 on the clock. A second stall put Nevills up 6-0 and action resumed with Nevills in offensive control. Nevills maintained control for the rest of the period and led 6-0 with a clinched riding time point (4:04 in time). Hemida chose down to start the third period and Nevills continued to punish the Terrapin on top. Nevills picked up another point on a third stall to lead 7-1. Nevills cut Hemida loose then connected on a low single. Nevills picked up the takedown with :20 and rode Hemida out to post a 10-1 major with 5:26 in time. -
BLACKSBURG -- Less than 16 hours after winning the ACC's dual meet championship with a victory over NC State, the Virginia Tech wrestling team took to the mat again and showed no sign of a letdown, as the No. 5 Hokies rolled to a 29-15 win over No. 16 South Dakota State at Virginia Tech Carilion Court on Sunday. Getting wins from three of the five seniors who were recognized on Senior Day -- Ty Walz, Joey Dance and Sal Mastriani -- the Hokies pulled away to move to 17-1 overall on the season and 7-1 against ranked opponents. South Dakota State fell to 13-4. “I intentionally put a back-to-back [matches] together where we got done late and had to get up and make weight again just because I wanted to simulate the NCAA tournament a little bit,†Tech coach Kevin Dresser said. “That was my thought process. When I set it up, I didn't realize South Dakota State would be as good as they are. I knew NC State would be formidable, and there would be a lot of pressure on us, so I wanted to have a pressure situation and I wanted to have a back-to-back situation. “They [South Dakota State] were fresh, and we weren't. We didn't wrestle great in situations, but we grinded. That's what we'll have to do in St. Louis [site of the NCAA Championships], and we haven't been great on a lot of Friday mornings [the second day] in St. Louis. So we needed to do this.†For the second straight match, the Hokies fell behind, as Tech's David Bergida lost 9-4 at 165 pounds. But the Hokies quickly recovered when Zach Epperly downed South Dakota State's David Kocer 3-1 at 174 pounds with a takedown in sudden victory. Epperly, ranked No. 5 at 174, moved to 17-1 on the season. Tech's Zack Zavatsky then rebounded from his loss Saturday night with an 8-3 win over Martin Mueller at 184 pounds. Zavatsky, who is ranked fourth in his weight class, registered two of his three takedowns in the third period and received a point for riding time to get the victory. Tech pushed its lead to 12-3 when Jared Haught won by forfeit at 197 pounds. Then Walz and Dance sealed this one with technical falls in the next two matches. Walz, who is ranked fifth nationally at heavyweight, jumped on Alex Macki right from the start, scoring twice on takedowns and adding four points on a near fall in the first period. He finished the match with seven takedowns and won 20-5 (5:49), moving to 19-2 on the season. Then Dance, ranked third at 125, easily handled the Jackrabbits' Ben Gillette. He, too, started fast, taking down Gillette three times in the first period. He finished with six takedowns and two near falls to record a 19-4 (6:07) win and move to 22-1 on the season. “We still need to improve at some weights, but those are some guys who can get on the podium,†Dance said. “We've got to get that right in the [wrestling] room. We'll go back and fix that, and they'll be ready. We'll all be ready for ACCs coming up and National Duals next weekend.†Dance's victory pushed the Hokies' lead to 22-3. The Jackrabbits recorded pins at 133 and 141 pounds to cut the lead to 22-15, but the Hokies' Solomon Chishko survived a tough match at 149 pounds to end things. Chishko, who is ranked sixth in this weight class, led 6-2 in the third period and wound up needing a takedown in sudden victory to get an 8-6 win. Mastriani closed things with an impressive 14-4 major decision victory over Logan Peterson at 157 pounds. Like classmates Walz and Dance, the No. 15 wrestler at 157 got out quickly, leading 6-2 after the first period thanks to three takedowns. A takedown and an escape in the second period pushed his lead to 9-2, and he moved to 15-4 on the season. “Sal's on an upswing,†Dresser said. “He's really wrestling well right now. I think he's healthy, and he's paid his dues. He's doing the right things right now.†The Hokies now gear up for the National Duals, which will take place next weekend. Tech will face a Big Ten opponent to be determined next Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Virginia Tech Carilion Court. The matchups will be announced Monday. LANCASTER, Pa. -- The George Mason wrestling team won seven bouts, including a season-high three falls, in a dominant 31-11 win over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at Mayser Gym in Lancaster, Pa. Mason (6-11, 2-4 EWL) improved to 5-3 in road duals this season. Junior Ibrahim Bunduka (18-3), 31st in the NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings, began the match at 125 pounds with a 10-2 major decision over Diplomats junior Edgar Garcia. Bunduka scored seven points over the final two periods to notch his fifth major decision of the season. After Franklin & Marshall (3-8, 1-6 EIWA) tied the match score 4-4 with a major decision at 133 pounds, Mason went on to win six of the final eight bouts of the night. "There were a couple of tight matches there early," Mason assistant coach Mark Weader said. "It was great to see some of the guys who struggled last time out have big matches for us tonight. It was huge to get three pins in a dual meet and we talked about how big bonus points would be in this match." At 141 pounds, Mason sophomore Tejon Anthony (17-9) and Franklin & Marshall junior Patrick Quinlan were scoreless after the first period. Anthony recorded a pair of takedowns in the second period and led 4-2 heading into the third. Quinlan scored with a takedown in the final minute of the third period to even the score 6-6 to force overtime. Anthony, who ranked 30th in RPI heading into the weekend, won the match 8-6 with a takedown in the first sudden victory to give Mason a 7-3 match score advantage. Mason senior Sahid Kargbo (24-2), who is 24th in the NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings, recorded a fall in the second period at 149 pounds against Franklin & Marshall junior Sam Butler. Kargbo's first pin of the season increased the match score lead to 13-3. Freshman Matthew Raines (10-15) followed with a 5-3 decision at 157 pounds to pad the Patriots lead to 16-3. After the Diplomats picked up a win at 165 pounds, Mason senior Ryan Forrest (2-4) registered a 13-7 decision at 174 pounds. Mason sophomore Austin Harrison (3-11) trailed 2-1 after the first period to Diplomats senior Gordon Bolig at 184 pounds. Harrison strengthened as the match progressed and he earned a pin in the third period. "I told myself that if I could make it through the first period that I had a pretty good shot at pulling it out in the third," Harrison said. "Coach Russell stressed that bonus points were going to be big tonight so that's what my goal was." Harrison recorded the first pin of his collegiate career. "It was a long time coming," said Harrison. "My parents surprised me and were in the crowd. I could not ask for anything more from tonight. The great thing about wrestling is any match can go either way." Harrison is one of 14 Mason wrestlers with at least one pin this season. "It was good to see, he really hung in there," Weader said of Harrison's win. "He wrestles his best late in the second and third period and winning the match was great for him and the team. It's good to see someone that works as hard as he does doing the right things have success." Mason heavyweight Matthew Voss (16-10) made quick work of Franklin & Marshall senior John Argast, recording a pin with 15 seconds remaining in the first period. Voss leads the team with four of Mason's 25 pins this season. The Patriots have won four of the last five meetings against the Diplomats. Each team now has 10 wins in the all-time series. Mason concludes the road portion of the regular season at American on Friday, Feb. 17 in Washington, D.C. Rider edges Drexel, Taylor ties J Rob for third on all-time wins list
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- On an historic night in Alumni Gymnasium, the Rider wrestling team (11-1, 5-1 EWL) won a tight 18-16 match against Drexel on the backs of three major decisions. The victory pushed Rider Head Coach Gary Taylor's all-time win total to 440, tying him with former Minnesota Head Coach J Robinson for third all-time in Division I wrestling history. The Broncs won five of the matches on the day, taking three by bonus points with a trio of major decisions from B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), and Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) accounting for the difference in the match. The Broncs also received victories from J.R. Wert (Christianburg, VA/Christianburg) and Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy). “That was a great match,†said Taylor. “We knew that this was going to be tough, and they did as well. I thought that both sides fought hard, but we were able to get more majors.†The match started off with a close battle at 125, with Wert winning a tight 2-1 decision over Zachary Fuentes to kick the match off 3-0. The Dragons would then take the next three matches, with nationally ranked wrestlers at both 133 and 149. #12 Kevin Devoy would hold off Rider sophomore Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional) 3-2 to tie the match, before David Pearce would defeat freshman Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area), 4-0. 13th ranked senior Matt Cimato would then defeat Jesse Rodgers (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) by major decision to push the Drexel lead to 10-3. The Broncs would then find their groove, winning three-straight major decisions to take back the lead 15-10. Clagon and Walsh won at 157 and 165 respectively, Clagon by a 14-5 score, and Walsh 12-3. Sherry would then take advantage of the turning momentum, scoring a last-second six-point move to blow open the 174-pound match and steal the major decision, 11-3. “I've only ever done that once in a match, and it worked out well today†said Sherry about the move that clinched the bonus points. Junior 184 Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) would then suffer a tight 3-1 loss to Alex DeCiantis, bringing the dual score to 15-13, where senior 197 Wolfe would score the 10-4 decision to reopen the lead. Junior Mauro Correnti (Delran, NJ/Holy Cross [Lock Haven]) would take the mat knowing that all he had to do was prevent a technical fall or pin to win the match for the Broncs, and he would do just that, losing 4-1 to the 16th ranked heavyweight in the nation, Joseph Goodhart to end the match 18-16. “At the beginning of the year, this was a challenge, but they took it on and have done a great job up to this point,†said Taylor in regards to the historic victory. "This is two years in a row that we've finished the dual meet season with a championship on the line. Obviously, the crowd came out, and it was a great night for us." The championship also marked the 23rd ACC team title won by Virginia Tech since the Hokies joined the league for the 2004-05 academic year.
