  4. MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan wrestling team won seven matches, two of them by pin in rolling to a 27-12 Mid-American Conference dual-meet victory over Kent State on Sunday at McGuirk Arena. The win was CMU's fifth straight and it lifted the Chippewas to 7-4 in duals. They finished 7-2 in league duals and are scheduled to close the regular season on Friday, Feb. 21 (7 p.m.) at home with a nonconference dual with Michigan State. CMU's pins came from Dresden Simon (141 pounds) and Matt Stencel (285). It was the second pin of the weekend and the 14th of the season for Stencel, who is ranked fourth nationally and has won eight consecutive matches and is 25-4. Stencel entered the weekend tied for third nationally with 12 pins. He posted a first-period pin to clinch CMU's win over Buffalo on Friday. Stencel's pin on Sunday came in 39 seconds over sophomore Spencer Berthold, who entered the dual with 10 of his 13 victories having come on pins. Simon, who is ranked 15th, improved to 24-8 with his third pin of the season. It marked the 14th time this season that Simon has won with bonus points. It was his first pin since Nov. 17, a 19-match stretch. The Chippewas also got decision victories from Ben Cushman (184), Landon Pelham (197), Drew Hildebrandt (125), Corbyn Munson (149) and Logan Parks (157). The meet began at 174 pounds and CMU won four of the first five matches in building a 15-3 lead after Hildebrandt's win. "I think that challenged our upper weights," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said of the start at 174. "Our big guys came out with a little bit of a spark and I think it took the dual meet away from them right away." Hildebrandt, who is ranked ninth nationally, ran his win streak to eight matches and improved to 27-3. In addition to Hildebrandt and Stencel, Simon, Parks and Pelham went 2-0 on the weekend, and the Chippewas got solid performances from a pair of redshirt freshman, Munson and Cushman, on Sunday. "They've been up and down a lot this year, but I think they're improving," Borrelli said. "Ben did a real good job of sprawling in his match and that's something we've been working on, and Corbyn did a real good job of just continuing to wrestle. Those are things you're looking for." After Friday's dual with Michigan State, the Chippewas will turn their attention to the most important part of the season, the MAC Championships and then the NCAA Championships. The MAC Championship are scheduled for March 7-8 at Northern Illinois. The NCAA Championships are set for March 19-21 in Minneapolis. "The dual-meet season is tough on us right now because we're developing in five weights … so there's a lot of pressure on us in a dual meet because we don't have a whole lot of margin for error if one of those four or five guys gets beat, someone's got to step up or we'll lose the dual meet," Borrelli said. "Once we get into a tournament format I think our guys are going to be a little more relaxed. We've got some big point-scoring potential, but we've also got some guys who probably can wrestle better without that (dual-meet) pressure on them." Results: 174: Andrew McNally (K) dec. 6. Princeton won the Ivy League title, its first since 1986 (Photo/Beverly Schafer) For the first time since 1986, the Princeton wrestling team is the Ivy League champion. For the first time since 1986, the Tigers beat Cornell. And for the first time since 2002, ending in incredible 92-match Ivy League win streak, an Ivy team has won a dual match against the Big Red, which had won every Ivy League title outright since 2003. Though there was plenty of anticipation entering the day, through the halftime intermission, Princeton's victory was far from assured. Cornell took three of the first four matches contested after beginning at heavyweight, building a 10-4 lead with third-ranked Patrick Glory holding Dominic LaJoie scoreless and getting a major decision at 125 for Princeton's lone win in that span. Matthew Kolodzik, a three-time All-America who returned to competition for Princeton only Saturday, battled Cornell's Hunter Richard to a decision at 149, and Cornell held the lead halfway through at 10-7. That match began a string of five victories that not only turned the match for Princeton, but ended in a crescendo with Travis Stefanik's 10-4 victory at 184 that unleashed a roar unseen in the program in 34 years. First, fourth-ranked Quincy Monday tied it up at 10-10 with a decision at 157. Grant Cuomo turned the tide Princeton's way with an 8-1 decision at 165. Kevin Parker's 10-3 win at 174 sustained the momentum, and put the match in Stefanik's hands with the possibility to clinch or let Cornell back in as Princeton led 16-10 with two matches left. Stefanik delivered, beating Jonathan Loew 10-4 to put Princeton ahead 19-10 with a battle between national top-four wrestlers at 197 still to go. Cornell's fourth-ranked Ben Darmstadt won it over third-ranked Patrick Brucki, but Princeton's historic moment was already complete. The Tigers will look to complete a perfect Ivy season for the first time since that 1986 Ivy title when Penn visits Dillon Gym next Saturday at noon. Davidson was deducted a team point following an unsportsmanlike conduct call at 133 pounds. With the win, the Panthers improve to 8-3 overall, while Davidson falls to 3-10. "Just stay after it and have faith that you will break through, today that's what we did. No matter who we are wrestling, if we just stay on the hunt like that I think good things will happen." The win was Pitt's third shutout of the season and second time scoring 50 or more points in a dual. The Panthers' other two shutouts came against Duke and West Virginia this season. Pitt took an early lead over the Wildcats when redshirt freshman Louis Newell won in a technical fall in 5:41, defeating Cian Fischer 17-0 at 125 pounds. Penn State won seven of ten bouts for the second time in three days and posted a convincing 31-10 victory in Minneapolis. 10. The Navy wrestling team (8-4, 3-1 EIWA) secured a 39-6 victory over a short-handed Duke (0-15, 0-3 ACC) squad Sunday afternoon at Northwood High School in Pittsboro, N.C. The Blue Devils forfeited two (125 & 141) of the first three matches, giving way to 12 points. Navy, meanwhile, claimed victory in the first nine matches before an injury at heavyweight gave Duke its lone win. "Today was a great opportunity to see some guys get competition opportunities that have not had many starts for us and they stepped up to the opportunity," said sixth-year Navy head coach Joel Sharratt. "Winning nine out of 10 bouts was a very strong performance by these guys and a good stepping stone towards our future goals. The focus is set on our two remaining duals and putting guys forward to the EIWAs that are hungry and ready to compete the Navy Way for their ticket to the NCAA Championship." The Highlights • The Midshipmen moved to 8-4 in dual competition this season, having earned wins in each of their last four duals. • Navy has wrestled five consecutive duals on the road - Lehigh (L, 23-9), American (W, 24-21), Drexel (W, 23-15), George Mason (W, 23-14) and Duke (W, 39-6). • Navy is now 15-2 all-time against the Blue Devils. • Navy never trailed in the match and won nine straight bouts before bowing out of the heavyweight match due to injury. • Three Navy wrestlers earned their first collegiate dual victories in the win. • While the Mids earned bonus points for the two Duke forfeits, they went on to win three bonus-point bouts - major decision by Jack Stanton-Taddeo (157), fall by Dean Caravela (184), tech fall by Jacob Koser (197). • Jacob Allen (133) improved to 4-0 in dual action this season with his 6-2 victory over Harrison Campbell. Allen has dual wins over California Baptist, Lehigh, Drexel and Duke. Allen has won six of his last seven matches overall. • Making his fifth career dual appearance, Wyatt Long (149) earned his first collegiate dual victory by way of an 8-5 decision over Wade Unger. Long came into the match 0-3 in duals this season. • Also earning his first collegiate dual victory was Jack Stanton-Taddeo (157), who came into the match having wrestled in just a pair of duals. He dominated Duke's Eric Carter, 11-2, to earn the major decision. • Bothered by an injury over the last handful of weeks, ninth-ranked Tanner Skidgel (165) returned to the mat where he dealt Ben Anderson a 5-3 loss.Skidgel is now 15-4 overall and 6-2 in dual action and has won nine of his last 10 matches. • Team captain Spencer Carey cruised to his 16th win of the season with a 9-4 win against Mason Eaglin. • Dean Caravela (184) reaped the rewards of bumping up a weight class, scoring his first dual victory by pinning Kai Blake (6:01). Caravela had wrestled 11 matches at 174 pounds this season where he posted a 5-6 record. • Rookie Jacob Koser (197) won his ninth consecutive match with 17-2 tech fall against Vincent Baker. Six of Koser's last seven wins have been either by tech fall (4) or fall (2). The rookie is now 18-5 overall and 10-2 in dual competition. More From Coach Sharratt • Building a great team requires resiliency and Dean Caravela bumping up to 184 was a great igniter for the bench today. He scored points in all positions and never let up the pressure while pursuing a pin. • Jacob Koser was another crowd-pleaser, scoring multiple takedowns and earning near fall points in numerous positions. He is really in a great place, having fun, competing hard and steps it up when the whistle blows. • Spencer Carey was relentless on his attacks and dominated the shot count. He works unbelievably hard and his style is very entertaining. Three Lady Tigers won individual titles -- Abby Nette (130), Mariah Harris (170) and Alexandra Castillo (191). The win for Nette is her second in a row as she finished along with Harris as a four-time WCWA All-American. Castillo earns her second All-American honor. The three joined 10 others to earn All-American status -- which is the Top 8 in each respective weight class. McKenzie Bacich (101), McKayla Campbell (109), Charlotte Fowler (116), Katlyn Pizzo (116), Adriana Lopez (123), Randi Robison (136), Gabrielle Garcia (143), Mhina Oseitutu (143), Alexia Foca (155) and Kenya Sloan (170). Head coach Lee Miracle also earned his second WCWA Coach of the Year honor. Jamestown University finished in third with 111.5 points, Presbyterian University was fourth with 94 points and Oklahoma City was fifth with 92.5 points. The win for Campbellsville is the second team title in the last three seasons as the Lady Tigers won their first WCWA championship in 2018. Late in the opening period, Nette answered with another take down to lead 6-1 before holding on late to win 6-2. The title for Nette is her second-straight and the third in Campbellsville women's wrestling history at the 130-pound weight class. Mariah Harris --170 pounds Going into the finals, Campbellsville knew it would come away with at least one national champion as Mariah Harris battled teammate Kenya Sloan. Harris, the two-seed, lost her last matchup with top-seeded Sloan, but today overcame that. With 45 seconds to go in the first period, Harris earned a passivity point and then a four-point throw to lead 5-0. But just a few minutes gone in the second, Sloan rallied with a four-point take down herself and pushed Harris off the mat to tie the match at 5-5. 17. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 22 Michigan, 27-9, on Saturday night at the Crisler Center. Iowa won eight-of-10 bouts and owned a 26-5 advantage in takedowns to improve to 8-0 in the Big Ten and clinch a share of the conference regular season title. Iowa won four-of-five before the break and led 12-3 behind top 10 wins from Pat Lugo and Kaleb Young. Lugo wrestled a scoreless first period, escaped to start the second, and used a third-period rideout to top No. 9 Kanen Storr, 2-0, at 149. Young used a takedown in each period to defeat No. 9 Will Lewan, 7-3, at 157 and extend his win streak to a career-best 12 matches. "Pat Lugo is a rider. That guy held points and Pat Lugo made him pay when he chose down," said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. "Kaleb Young was ready to go and hit some shots that were crisp. One more score there and he can widen that gap." Iowa extended it's team lead after the break with four straight wins. Alex Marinelli and Michael Kemerer combined for 16 takedowns in a pair of bonus-point wins at 165 and 174. Marinelli used eight takedowns and 3:51 of riding time to win 18-6 at 165, and Kemerer used eight takedowns and four nearfall points to terminate his match 21-6 at 174. Paul Glynn's third-period rally ran out of time at 133, and Tony Cassioppi suffered his first career loss at 285, surrendering a fall in the second period. "(Michigan" is a team that is coached strategically to be strong at the end of the period, score at the end of the period, keep an eye on the clock. We handled most of that well," said Brands. "Heavyweight got away from us. We were trading blows with him and got into a position where we just don't want to me. We have to get better at our finishes. That match ended up lopsided but it wasn't lopsided." UP NEXT Iowa hosts No. 13 Minnesota on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 8:30 p.m. (CT). The dual is streamed at BTN Plus and FloWrestling.com. 21. The showdown for the Ivy League title is set. Doing its part to make that battle happen between top-20 Ivy teams, No. 16 Princeton defeated Columbia Saturday 28-9 at Dillon Gym on ESPNU, setting up a battle of Ivy-unbeaten teams Sunday at 1 p.m. in Jadwin against No. 17 Cornell. Tickets are available here. Princeton will be looking for its first win over Cornell since 1986 and its first Ivy League title since that year, as a win over Cornell would ensure no worse than a share of the Ivy title with the Tigers wrapping up the league slate in Dillon against Penn next Saturday. With its win over Penn Saturday, Cornell extended its Ivy League winning streak to 92 matches, dating back to 2002. Saturday's match opened at 141, and though Columbia's Matt Kazimir opened with a 6-4 decision over Marshall Keller, Princeton strung together six consecutive wins to put the match away. Four of those came with bonus points, thanks to major decisions from Quincy Monday, Kevin Parker and Patrick Brucki and a technical fall from Matthew Kolodzik, a three-time All-America who returned to competition Saturday after taking the fall semester off from competing for Princeton. That string of wins put Princeton ahead 23-3 with just three matches to go. The Lions took the matches at heavyweight and 133 around a technical fall from Patrick Glory at 125, moving Glory to 16-0 on the season with 12 of those by fall or tech fall. 23. EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Edinboro wrestling team picked up technical falls by Peter Pappas and Jacob Oliver to snap a three-match losing streak with a 28-18 win over Davidson on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro improved to 10-8 overall while the Wildcats are now 3-9. The Fighting Scots would win seven of the ten bouts in the first-ever dual with Davidson, but with the Wildcats' three wins coming by fall, the Fighting Scots were forced to use a less-than-100 percent Oliver at 174 lbs. The redshirt sophomore sat out Thursday's match at Lock Haven due to an injury, but he came through with a 17-1 technical fall over Steve Newell to give Edinboro aa 19-12 lead. While improving to 20-4 on the season, Oliver would jump out to a 9-0 lead after one period behind a takedown and two tilts that resulted in six points. He would add four more back points, and after an escape and his second takedown, tilted Newell again for two points to bring an end to the bout. Pappas (15-12) picked up a 21-6 technical fall at 6:14 at 157 lbs. over Hunter Costa. He held a 4-1 lead after one period on the strength of a pair of takedowns, then blew the match open over the next two periods. He registered three takedowns in the second period and led 11-4. He would finish with eight takedowns in all, with three more in the third period along with two nearfall points. The match got underway with Davidson recording falls in two of the first three matches to grab a 12-3 lead. Edinboro led in both bouts when the pins occurred. Lucas Rodriguez (14-11) held a 4-0 lead over Cian Fisscher in the second period when Fischer was able to record the defensive pin. Freshman Tye Varndell came up with another strong showing at 133 lbs., winning a 3-2 decision over Kyle Gorant (10-8). Varndell had the lone takedown in the first period for a 2-1 lead, and a Gorant escape was the lone scoring in the second period. Varndell would register the winning escape 25 seconds into the third period to improve to 14-11. Richie Gomez looked to be on his way to a win at 141 lbs., holding a 4-1 lead after one period and up 7-4 late in the second against David Loniewski. Loniewski would reverse Gomez in the final seconds and came up with the fall at 4:57. Trailing 12-3, Edinboro would recover to win the next three bouts. Tyler Vath won an 8-5 decision over Dalton Blankenship at 149 lbs. to improve to 12-11. He used two takedowns and two escapes to build a 6-2 lead after two periods. A Blankenship reversal and a stalling point narrowed the match to 6-5, but Vath added an escape in the final second and had 2:55 in riding time. The technical falls by Pappas and Oliver sandwiched a 16-10 decision by Derek Ciavarro over Noah Satterfield at 165 lbs. Ciavarro rode a huge first period to the win. The transfer from Virginia Tech had six takedowns in the first period to grab a 12-6 lead. He added a seventh in the third period. Ciavarro is now 11-12. Oliver's win gave Edinboro a 19-12 lead and actually clinched the match with the Fighting Scots set to receive a forfeit at 197 lbs. But the most anticipated match of the day still took place at 184 lbs., with Edinboro's Cody Mulligan (15-11) from Saegertown High School squaring off against Gavin Henry from Union City High School. The two both came up through the Great Lakes Elementary Wrestling program run by former Edinboro assistant coach Gary Astorino. Henry, a true freshman, would catch Mulligan near the edge of the mat for a takedown, add four back points, and recorded Davidson's third pin of the day at 1:06. Even with the fall, Edinboro had an insurmountable 25-18 lead after Dylan Reynolds' forfeit win at 197 lbs. Jon Spaulding capped the win with a 7-1 decision over Mitchell Trigg at heavyweight. Following a scoreless first period, Spaulding used a reversal, a penalty point, and a stalling point for a 4-0 lead after two periods. He recorded the lone takedown in the final 20 seconds. Spaulding is now 23-7. Edinboro has two more duals remaining, both at home. The Fighting scots host Michigan on Friday, February 21, then host Clarion for Senior Day on Sunday, February 23. 24. LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell wrestling team moved to 7-1 in EIWA action, and 6-0 at home, by defeating Binghamton, 25-13, on Saturday at Davis Gym. After the Bison (8-4, 7-1 EIWA) tied the dual at 13-13 entering the final two bouts, the Bearcats (3-10, 2-8 EIWA) forfeited to the Hartman brothers to cede the dual. Despite the anticlimactic conclusion, Bucknell and Binghamton's dual was highly entertaining. Six bouts were decided by decision, with four coming by three or fewer points. For the Bison, Jaden Fisher (157) cruised to a 12-4 major decision over Christopher Barker; that was the victory that made it a 13-13 dual. Matthew Kolonia (149) rallied to defeat Matt Swanson by a 7-4 decision. After Swanson rode out Kolonia for the majority of the second period, Kolonia proceeded to outscore Swanson by a 6-1 margin in the third frame; Kolonia, who started on top, picked up a quick four-point near fall and then a late takedown to electrify Davis Gym. Drew Phipps (197) energized the crowd early, picking up a commanding 8-1 decision over Sam DePrez to move to 23-5 and 11-1 in dual action; he now needs just two victories to match his career-high total of overall victories set a season ago. Brandon Seidman (125) was Bucknell's other individual victor, dispatching Carson Sauriol by a 5-3 decision. While Darren Miller (133) suffered his first EIWA dual defeat, dropping to 7-1 on his freshman season, he impressed. Facing off against Zack Trampe, Intermat's 10th-ranked grappler, he took a 5-4 lead with 42 seconds left in the third period on a takedown. Trampe responded with a reversal and two back points to slip away with an 8-6 decision; Miller, notably, earned the riding time point, building up 1:30 of riding time over the course of the bout. David Campbell (141) fell in a heartbreaker to Anthony Sparacio, giving up a takedown with 17 seconds left in the first sudden-victory frame to drop a 6-4 decision. Brandon Stokes (285) was clipped by Joe Doyle, 5-2. The Bison are right back to work, squaring off against American at 12 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
