Hopefully whoever told Sammy Alvarez he could get another year isn’t giving Gabe any advice about this3 points

I think it is a distant 8th. Behind Cheese rolling and Extreme ironing to name a few. Also toe wrestling and wife carrying. Those are actually real sports. No joke!!!!2 points

Crazy ending in Ruiz match against Ukraine. He was up 5-4 with less than 10 seconds to go, Ukraine was in on a shot then they have a weird exchange that’s first scored as 2 Ukraine putting Ukraine up 6-5. US challenges and they score it 2-2 so Ruiz wins 7-6.2 points

So you're saying we should convert folkstyle to be more like Greco so we can make the Greco team better? Interesting thought.2 points

I think Ryan Holmes said he was pretty set on going home to Chattanooga but someone reached out to him late and he wanted to at least check it out; no idea who that institution is though2 points

Or... you could try to imagine how dominant we would be were we to focus on only teo styles, MFS & MGR rather than three (those two + Folkstyle).2 points

The federation hasn’t officially announced it yet - and they usually post updates really fast (honestly, gotta give Dabir credit for that, most other federations update their websites like once a month). I do think Nokhodi will go to Worlds eventually, but they said he has to wrestle in a tournament first.2 points

Villasenor 125/133 Zinkin 125/133 Ramirez 133/141 Rainey 133/141 Rainey 141/149 Forrest 141/149 Wolbert 141/149 Vega 141/149/157 Robideau 157 Routledge 157/165 Hickman 157/165 Guerrero 157/165 Lockett 165/174 That's 13 guys in potentially 5 weight classes, the lowest ranked is Guerrero at #11. Everyone else is top 5 in their weight class. Other than Vllasenor they are all in the classes of '25 or '26. Even with selective redshirting some very good wrestlers will never start and could be third string.2 points

I don't know about Reuters but you only have to read the first two paragraphs of Beltway to see they are obviously biased. people have desperately attempted to normalize his absurd abuses of power and blatant corruption Who are these "people?"1 point

Damn you got him. Maybe he will resign ? why can no one answer this. did the Biden admin just not give af? Or did they know what was in there (Trump man bad) and didn’t release it? it defies logic that they could put the orange man in prison forever but just didn’t feel compelled to do it.1 point

The portal was simple to understand than when Buchanan/Parco/Teemer moved w/o entering the portal that just opened up chaos and now nothing makes sense1 point

Well, wrestling is mostly a parent-participant sport in the US. If interest goes any further than that, it ends at rooting for the college alma mater. Funny you mention Iranians, they're one of the few (or the only???) countries in the world with mass appeal fandom for wrestling. Like if there's a lively crowd at Worlds, 90%+ of the time it's Iranians in the stands. Everywhere else the wrestling world is a small and insular community. You might be the local town hero, but the regular denizens of St Petersburg or Tokyo have never wrestled and don't follow the sport at all. If you win an Olympic medal, you might participate in a ceremony and get a picture with a politician. That's about the extent of your national appeal.1 point

Given the amount of participants, money, quality youth clubs training kids from very young ages, and wrestling infrastructure that the US has compared the rest of the world, you'd expect Americans to dominate wrestling the way China does in ping pong. But they don't. Somehow a plucky little tag team of Dagestan+Ossetia and Mazandaran are able to match them. I think it's thanks to Folk style that we have the current rough parity at the top. There is this misconception that wrestling outside of America works the same way as in America, just on mini scale. In a lot of what would be considered the Tier 2 nations, the entire wrestling scene is a club or two in the capital plus one other big city and maybe one military run program. That's it.1 point

Takedown, 5-2 Hamiti. Another TD, 7-2. I think an exposure, 9-2. Takedown Switzerland, 9-4. And that’s how it ends. Switzerland guy did have a Russian-sounding name.1 point

To be honest with you - I don't even understand what it means in a technical sense to be in the portal. He isn't listed there on WrestleStat, but that may not be the be-all and end-all1 point

No I am saying leave folkstyle alone. Keep the freestyle season…. turning folkstyle into freestyle will ruin our sport. Meh Greco. Do what you want with it. keep it. Drop it. Whatever.1 point
-
Or…. We could prioritize the sport that is far more popular….. before we ruin the sport we have. It’s also hard to be more dominant than literal #1. Why can’t we just have both? also. GR is barely worth mentioning.1 point

U17 world champs. I guess folkstyle isn’t ruining our talent on the world stage and we really don’t need to turn folkstyle into freestyle.1 point

Watched Irans 60 kg guy in the semis as well as third place. Very good wrestler but absolutely zero mental fortitude. Could be very dangerous if he gets with a sports psychologist.1 point

Ronnie Ramirez was always a guy I was super high on but I just thought he was too big to hold 125 so I did not really see how he got in the lineup for Oklahoma state. Now after he beat Zhou its pretty apparent he is improving rapidly (lost to Knox 14-4 and Mauger 5-3 at the open) and now you have yet another piece in what is a log jam. I do think however the raneys will be able to redshirt and the olympic redshirt. That one gives them a lot of time to grow but also could allow you to let sergio go right away at 141 and then 149 once Jax gets there and have used 3 years of eligiblity before the Raneys even go. That would also allow Ronnie 2 years at 133, I think the main goal has to be to keep all those guys there as long as possible just so they can train with each other.1 point

Blaze was losing 6-6 to Georgia with 30 seconds to go, got a takedown, leg lace then Georgia guy goes for a desperation move and then kinda gives up, Blaze gets the fall1 point

Thanks for the YT link and mat assignments @okokzach! Turner won 3-2 against someone from Ukraine Vito against Dzhelep of Ukraine. Vito opened it up with a nice takedown about a minute in. Then gave up 4 after being in deep on a shot and kinda got pancaked. In the second he got another takedown and they gave him 4 for feet to back which I thought the exposure was questionable, Ukraine challenged but they kept it, so 7-4. Then Ukraine got a takedown, 7-6. Another TD for Vito, 9-6 and that was the final. This match started at about 1:34 in the mat 2 video I think1 point

from what it sounds like he was working out there and was likely to end up there, but as of now, he is not officially enrolled1 point

I don't think guys leaving will ultimately effect OSU much. They will each likely give it 2 or 3 years of attempting to make the starting line-up and transfer for their last year or two of eligibility if that's what they want to do. The guys on the roster will still have plenty of training partners on the college roster and with the cowboy RTC to where training shouldn't take a hit. OKST will massively benefit from all of these guys knowing that their spot isn't guaranteed and knowing they can't take a day, or a match off.1 point

Stewart is BY FAR the best wrestler left in the portal. He's the only one that is an all American. Other than Stewart, the only guy in the portal right now that has ever even qualified for nationals is the roadrunner Richard Castro-Sandoval1 point

Updated stats as of 8/1: 309 wrestlers entered the transfer portal (which represents about 10-11% of all D1 wrestlers) this off-season. 179 wrestlers that entered the transfer portal and changed teams 68 wrestlers that had entered the transfer portal, haven't yet found a new home, and are still on their old roster 47 wrestlers that had entered the transfer portal, and are no longer on an active roster of any team. 13 wrestlers that entered the transfer portal but decided to remain with their previous team 2 wrestlers that entered the transfer portal, but decided to move on from wrestling1 point

I suspect that what takes @Wrestleknownothing a couple of minutes may take most of us hours. That's probably due to either talent, experience, or both. I own a machine shop in PA and like nothing better than seeing some of my best employees watching YouTube videos while the 5 axis mills they've programmed are making all of us lots of money. Wrestleknownothing is the Joe Dimaggio of this forum perhaps. Makes the difficult look easy.1 point

I have managed my career such that I have a lot of freedom of motion, and I take advantage of it. I am not retired, nor self-employed. My job entails doing similar stuff with financial data, so I have a lot of practice with much, much, much larger data sets (billions of data points), making this fairly easy (but not always). The hardest part is always getting the data, not manipulating it. As someone else pointed out, I really like numbers. And in wrestling there has been a complete lack of numerical analysis, so I can't not try to fill that void.1 point
-
Can I ask you a serious question, and I already know this is going to come across wrong. I see people spend countless hours on stuff like this, and I am thankful. BUT, are you retired? IF not retired, are you self-employed? Kids? Again, I know I sound like a d*ck, I do not want it to come across like that, but I find myself at times not being able to eat lunch because of my job, or running around. I am fascinated when people can do all of this stuff, or spend countless hours on social media. I get Willie, he does this for a living, but some of you guys can post all over social media and spend hours on posts like this. That Nh dude, hell I see him all over too. I guess what I am saying, I am jealous as hell that I do not get to enjoy life to spend this much time in forums and social media. I will get back to the group, I may quit my job as I talk through this. signed- truly jealous PS. I just looked. you have over 10K posts on this forum. That simply amazes me. I am going to say again, without you type of guys, we do not get to go brag about stats and data to our buddies like we came up with it ourselves.1 point

For the most recent Oly Trials, despite being in State College all week Suriano was the last wrestler by far to pick up his credential/athlete packet etc. He didn't show up until 5 minutes before weigh ins and as best as I could tell he took an Uber to the venue in just his singlet and slides, had the Uber wait while he came in, got his credential, weighed in and then went right back out the door to his Uber. Doesn't help answer the question but that's my Suriano story and seemed as good a time as any to share it.1 point

i am surprised anyone is surprised at this consequence. It was blindingly obvious that raising the cost of giving up a counter take down would lower the risky activity of taking shots and also over-rewarding the first take down would lead to 3rd period stallfests. Don't people who know wrestling, wrestlers, and the mind-set of those at the top of the sport make the rules and also comment on these pages?1 point

I think this is probably the best data point to indicate the 3 pt takedown may have resulted in less action. Thanks1 point
