When working at the state level in the state Senate, I had the Senator I work for teach (25 years ago) the difference between the parties, which till this day, i think still holds true for the most part. Not that it matters, the Sen. was in the D party, and yes I worked for the party.

He told me there are not two parties, there are four. He said the lines between the four are pretty clear.

1. Far right: Strong religious background, censorship (yet claim to be about less Govt.), pro-business, Less Govt. Strong Family, Isolationism, etc...
2. Republican: Financial Conservative, cares more about the economy than social issues. Smaller Govt. More localized control, Pro-Life, Support Constitution
3. Democrats: Labor Supporters, Social balance, more govt. Agencies and protections, Support of the Constitution, Pro Farmer,
4. Far Left: Socialist approach, More Govt., Less rights or rather choices (they say are rights), Govt. knows better than you, Distribution of wealth, etc,,

1. Taxes: Strongly protect loopholes and don't you dare touch the capital Gains Tax, generally anti-flat tax, don't care about income taxes, also do not support inheritance or death taxes. See "1 % and everyone else".

2. Similar to above, but many believe income tax or a flat tax with zero loopholes, and or a national sales tax with no loopholes. Also, do not want Capital Gains changed and tend to be anti-death tax. See (generally 4 classes: Low, Middle low, Middle high, high).

3. Very Similar to 2, except more of a 3-class position.

4. This one was interesting. He said the more left Dems see only 2 classes, also, like the far right, different is what each considers rich. For this group, anyone who makes above the poverty line is basically rich, and below is poor. He said to me, This group and the far right do not actually see a middle class.

He shared this with me to help me understand how politics worked. Of course, I shortened it; this was a very long conversation. Note this post IS NOT designed to say who is right or wrong, who is better or worse. To give perspective.
