It was never an option or plan for him to return to 141 this season.  Bartlett was there.  He has since outgrown even 149lbs, so why would he go down.  Barr has not outgrown 184lbs.

Barr was noticeably smaller than every AA contender he stepped on the mat with this year, save for Salazar and Munoz.  Neither of which were true 197lbers (Salazar weighing in at 194lbs Day 1 at B1Gs shows that).

Sample size of one is all we have to go off of though, gents.

We can ignore it if we want, but it is a fact that there has only been one guy to go up in weight for them for a season then go down - in the Cael Sanderson era at Penn State.

There is also no reason to assume he would do worse.  Not sure you gents are recalling last offseason.  Aside for his loss to Sinclair at the Open, he beat everyone, including McEnelly via 6-2 and 4-1 decisions at two different tournaments (US Open, WTT), before avenging his loss to Sinclair in the Best of Three at the WTT.

I think the sample size of guys who go up then down is generally small, never mind at a single university. More often than not the up, down (or down, up) is to avoid a guy in your own room. Not a lot of schools have that high class problem. Barr went up to avoid Starocci. And now Starocci is gone.

Shakur Rasheed did it as well. He wrestled 165, 174, 197, 184, 197. Similar to Bartlett (and to Barr this year) he went up to 197 both times because he could not beat the 184 (Nickal, then Brooks), even though 184 was his preferred weight.

Alex Facundo, too. After qualifying at 165 he went down to 157 last year. Of course, that was to avoid Mesenbrink, and Wrestlestat has him at 174 next year, presumably to avoid Mesenbrink again.

And with the transfer portal as wide open as it is I think we will see it even less in the future. That is already playing out at PSU (Facundo and Ryder), we saw it at Iowa last year where guys transferred out rather than change weight or sit on the bench, and there are other examples this year that I am forgetting.

Just thought of another who would have gone down, after going up, if he could. Max Dean. If Brooks wasn't in the way he definitely would have gone back to 184. I saw him at dinner once and was marveling at how much he ate and he said he had to because he had a hard time getting heavy enough to wrestle 197. Poor guy.

And if you squint you can see it with Bernie Truax too. He went down to 184 at PSU after wrestling 197 at Cal Poly. Again with Aaron Brooks?

So I guess it is really all about Aaron Brooks after all. Never mind.

I’m sure Barr weighs more than 184 walking around. So even if it may be his “ideal” weight, I don’t think it’s his “natural” weight. He proved he can be affective at 197 and now has another year to lift and grow into it even more. He made the national finals and the guy who beat him is graduating. I think it would be crazy for him to move down. Especially if AJ ends up going heavy weight. Then Barr would be a solid favorite to win 197.

I am certainly not advocating he move down. I mean, I have not the first clue what is best for him. I guess I am just saying I would not be surprised either way.

If I am the PSU staff I am keeping barr at 184 at least as a possibility even if it is not so that the Mirasolas may feel less compelled to leave. Its a *I poop my pants, don't laugh at me*ty thought process but the portal window is very small so you kind of handcuff them a bit.
